WELCOME I love Autumn but as it approaches I have a little feeling of unease. It’s been multiple decades since I went to school, I don’t even have any school goers in my house anymore but as Autumn looms I still get little pangs of panic – get the uniforms and books – quick the school year is starting! I’ve many happy memories of school and college but almost all of them are tinged with a small sense of dread. They were happy years where I gobbled up but also resisted information and where I made friends. When I consider that time what strikes me is my main motivation was the fear of failure. Nothing more. I had no plan, no real desires I just didn’t want to fail. I learned a lot. I even learned from being a decidedly average student. When I was utterly delighted at scraping a C in a test some of my friends were devastated and felt they utterly failed at getting a B. This reality taught me two things; failure is different for all of us and the way the world looks depends almost entirely on your vantage point. Now, older and a little wiser, I know passing exams is really not a great measure of a life. At times it’s important of course but CV’s and qualifications don’t represent us well or fully as individuals or citizens. “Information will never replace illumination,” Susan Sontag, Writer Philosopher wrote in The Conscience of Words. A sentiment I fully agree with. As we grow and mature we learn more about how little we know. We start to understand the importance of making a real effort to keep learning. Learning, by definition, means exploring opinions and areas of existence with which we are not already familiar, that are different to what we know. We need to express our opinions allowing criticism. We need to gather and interact with information in order to see things in a new light. We need at times to fail. None of us can truly know ourselves or who our friends are until we fail. We learn and emerge wiser and stronger from setbacks. JK Rowling regularly speaks about having built her dreams of being a writer on the solid foundations of rock bottom. She recounts there are benefits to failing and the need for it “If you are not making mistakes, you’re not taking enough risks.” I’ve decided her outlook and the advice writer Neil Gaiman gave in his speech Making Good Art, are to be Mermaid’s mantra for our Autumn season, he says ‘Make Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life. Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it’. In our Autumn season there is huge diversity with old and new voices. Some of our work may not be as successful as we might like but there is nothing to be scared of – please do join us! Niamh O’Donnell & The Mermaid Team 3
MERMAID SPACE Mermaid Space and Made in Mermaid make up our residency programme and Artists Commissions. Both of these initiatives help us ensure we’re not just a centre of presentation but a place of creation. It confirms our commitment to supporting the work of artists to research, make and produce new works. This season we are very pleased to announce the realisation of large scale initiatives as well as new artists to our portfolio; Janet Moran is a wonderful (and well known) artist / actor. In 2017 Janet was given a Gap Day Bursary and since then Mermaid have continued to support her and we’re delighted to announce this Autumn Janet will be a first-time Writer / Director of her new piece, A Holy Show. This new work will be produced by Mermaid and presented with us on 5th Sept and will then move into Dublin Fringe Festival for 8 shows in the Abbey Theatre (on the Peacock Stage) running from 8th to 15th Sept. (See page 14 for more info). We have gathered a truly miraculous team of creatives with Actors: Caitriona Ennis and Patrick Moy, Lighting Designer: Sinead Wallace, Set and Costume Designer: Molly O’Cathain, Sound Designer: Ivan Birthistle, AV Designer: Neil O’Driscoll, Choreographer: Bryan Burroughs, Dramaturg: Gavin Kostick, Production Manager: Conor Mullan, Stage Manager: Martina Kavanagh and Photography & Graphic Design: Ste Murray. Theatre truly is a collaborative art form because not only are those artists imperative to the success of the piece we also could make the work without the support of; an Arts Council of Ireland Theatre Project Award. Script and Play Development co-commissioned by Mermaid Arts Centre and importantly The Pavilion Theatre and Janet was also given support by the Centre Culturel Irlandais (Paris) and Fishamble: New Play Clinic - no less!

MERMAID SPACE In our Visual Arts Programme this Autumn, Mermaid is beside itself with excitement as we have managed to support the commissioning of a new body of work by Cléa van der Grijn, an exemplary artist based in Sligo whose work represents a standard of contemporary practice and thinking not seen often enough in arts centres and rural galleries. Mermaid is working in partnership with with Linenhall Arts Centre (Mayo) and Courthouse Gallery and Studios (Clare) as well as The Hamilton Gallery (Sligo) and Soloman Gallery (Dublin) to present a new body of work by Cléa over eight months starting in October 2018 and running to May 2019. Cléa will make a new body of work titled JUMP around understanding the rational, social and emotional circumstances constructed around death, time and memory. The exhibition consists of a series of approximately 25 paintings and an ambitious film work written and directed by Cléa and created with collaborators; Joseph P. Hunt, Michael Cummins and Ciaran Carty. (See page 10 for more information) Cléa’s paintings will comprise of structured pictorial statements that hover between abstraction and representation. The paintings will inform the film and the film will inform the paintings. Collectively the work will build on the major turning point of development in Clea’s practice in her most recent work and allow her to further question, push, investigate and play on the interconnectedness of time and the creation of place to present a fictional now. A construct rather than a reconstruct. The work will range from visually dense to austerely minimal and Clea will work in a variety of scale. The range of scale and the innovative immersive screening room with film will offer each gallery involved an opportunity to curate their own show – selected and suitable for their own space and audience presented across the country to as wide a range of audiences as possible over an eight month period.

MERMAID SPACE Gap Day, an initiative led by Lian Bell (funded through the Arts Council Theatre Development Programme) is to return to Mermaid in 2018 / 2019 and we are delighted! This really important initiative offers freelance theatre artists one or two paid creative days where dreaming, thinking and planning time is valued. In 2016 we supported 15 artists in 8 counties with 24 paid days. In 2017 we were even more ambitious and increased our support to include 33 artists in 13 counties with a total of 54 paid working days. The exciting thing about a Gap Day is that even though it seems like a small offer, it is a real chance for breathing space and creative thinking – what it represents is a true and genuine offer of care for an artist’s creative working environment, working conditions and creative wellbeing. Artists will be selected from an open call (launched in early December) and over February to March 2019 work will start around the country. Check in on our website and we’ll let you know how to apply, who is selected and what exciting plans each artist has hatched.

THE MAI is an epic tale of three generations of a family inspired by love but shattered by inescapable reality. It is both wildly funny and humorously tragic. The play centres on a formidable forty-year-old woman, a teacher known as The Mai, whose husband Robert, a musician, has always felt stifled by her ideals of perfection. After seventeen years he leaves her, whereupon she sets about decorating a dream house in the hope that he will one day return to her. From her fairytale castle set in the midlands of Ireland, on the banks of the legendary Owl Lake, The Mai waits by the window for him to return. The play opens in this world on the day of Robert’s return after an absence of four years. Throughout Mai’s and Robert’s troubled reunion appear the memorable characters that comprise the three generations of her family. These are her two sisters meddling in the affairs of her three daughters with comical tenacity while towering above them all is the irreverent matriarch, Grandma Fraochlan, who presides over all with her “ancient and fantastical memory”, reminding them that the past is looming over the present. Starring Derbhla Crotty. 24

The Bystander
The Bystander is an intriguing and adventurous dancetheatre production by multi-award winning dance innovators Junk Ensemble. Taking its name from the ‘bystander effect’ phenomenon of the murder of Kitty Genovese outside her apartment in Queens, NYC in 1964, whereby thirty-eight witnesses saw or heard the attack, yet none of them called the police, The Bystander brings to the surface some of the murkier and complex behaviours of contemporary society. ‘I didn’t want to get involved’ - Anonymous Neighbor, 1964 Performed by internationally acclaimed performers and drawing on the expertise of a psychologist, The Bystander gets under the skin of how we behave as individuals and groups. What makes us help someone and what makes us simply stand by? The work is choreographed and directed by Jessica Kennedy & Megan Kennedy and designed by a highly skilled creative team to create a rich and shadowy world. ‘The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it’ - Albert Einstein

Best-selling writer William Fotheringham has written a “biography” of Leth’s meisterwerk – how it was conceived and made and what became of the men and the places in it – and will be on hand to answer questions about the film and its maker. Our First Monday’s short film A Hand of Three will be screened prior to the film.

Blindboy Podcast Tour
SATURDAY 1 December | 8pm €25
Blindboy’s increased notability away from his band Rubberbandits, has allowed for him to explore wider avenues and create perhaps outrageously mind-altering brainchildren which can only be described as courageous, yet bonkers. With a number one selling book under his belt and a podcast that has reached interest not only in Ireland but internationally, the satirist could possibly single-handedly change people’s mind set on mental health and the deafening stigma it surrounds. Outspoken, informed and empathetic, Blindboy engages his audience with an unusual touch of realism. There is a very authentic feeling of “freedom” Mr Boatclub exhumes which allows his listeners and participants to openly speak their mind without judgement and no topic off limits - certainly an air of belonging encircling the space you find yourself in when listening or in the company of Blindboy. His latest innovative creation, The Blindboy podcast does not only indoctrinate mental health issues but reaches further into a wide spectrum of current topics, may it be gun laws, feminism, racism or a bit of history. Blindboy has it covered.
