WELCOME I have a confession. Even though I work in an arts centre, quite often after I’ve been to a different kind of gig or alternate theatre piece I find myself saying ‘I wish I did that more often’. We all say it - right? This year - I’ve held myself to one of my ‘I wish I more oftennesses’ (yes I know it’s not a word). I’ve reduced my brain drain TV viewing and I’ve read more. I have just finished a remarkable book called Charlotte by David Foenkinos. At one point David outlines his fascination with a man called Aby Warburg. I too have become fascinated and have spent the past three weeks avidly, almost obsessively reading anything and everything I can about the man. Aby was a German art historian and cultural theorist. Heir to a fortune he bequeathed his entire fortune to his brothers on the sole condition they buy him any book he asked for. In this way Aby created an unprecedented collection / library on Cultural Studies. What made his collection even more exceptional was he had multiple innovative theories on how books should be arranged and read. The most famous theory or at least the one I have become a little obsessed with is ‘the good neighbour theory.’ That being, the book we are looking for may not necessarily be the book we should read. We really should look at the one next to it. While I struggled at first, I have applied this theory and have discovered so many new authors and books that I would otherwise not have read. I have been thrilled by new things. I want to encourage you to do the same. Have you heard of Creative Ireland? It is our Government’s five year programme to encourage everyone to realise their full creative potential. While I’m sometimes cynical of certain political initiatives I totally agree with Creative Ireland’s underlying proposition that creativity supports wellbeing and arts and culture are critical and crucial avenues to the creativity of all Irelands citizens.Therefore, I encourage you to look up the vast array of activities they have planned across the country (and specifically in Wicklow) and apply Aby’s the good neighbour theory. Go to something you may not otherwise attend. Do something different and do it more often. Change your habits and yourself for the better. You won’t regret it. Niamh O’Donnell & The Mermaid Team.

MERMAID SPACE Mermaid Space is our residency programme which helps us to ensure we’re not just a centre of presentation but a place for creation. It confirms our commitment to supporting the work of artists to research, make and produce work in Wicklow. This is how we keep artists at our heart, and that helps keep us as a space relevant. As we plan the final season in 2017, we’re very pleased to continue to support two powerful and talented women. They’ve started to make new work in Mermaid one of which will be presented in Dublin Fringe Festival and the other in Dublin Theatre Festival. Two success stories! First is the wonderful Bray theatre maker Camille Lucy Ross. Camille said to me “I’d like my new work to be dark, uncomfortable, hysterical, rousing and gut-wrenchingly frustrating and satisfying all at once!” so how could we say no – we offered her space to develop her new show - How To Be Angry - an absurd physical comedy about our struggles with rage.The show will be presented in Dublin Fringe Festival – it will be wonderful - go see it, full info on fringefest.com! (We hope to present Camille here in Spring 2018.) Also Doireann Coady (of THEATREclub) worked in August on her piece I’m Not Here. For the last two years Doireann has been trying to figure out how to perform a duet with someone who is not here. In 2014 she found tapes of her brother singing. He was being recorded by her father who was testing out a second hand dictaphone.This piece will be a kind of duet between Doireann and her brother. Her brother is dead. Doireann will premiere I’m Not Here in Dublin Theatre Festival and also present in Mermaid on 12th October (See Page 27).

MERMAID SPACE August was a busy month for us as we hosted a two day Fishamble New Play Clinic. Wicklow Writer Philip St John (High Seas Productions) and Director Matthew Ralli (Speckintime) were back in with us to work on the development of a new piece The Restoration of Hope with actors Jody O’Neill, Mark O’Regan, and Will Irvine and dramaturg Annabelle Comyn. Philip’s play is a darkly funny variation on the Faust story set at Christmas-time in Dublin and Wicklow. Please come to see its premier at Mermaid on 17th November (See Page 49). We also started a new working relationship with writer / actor Janet Moran. Janet is working on a piece of theatre called A Holy Show. We are supporting Janet for a week to work on the 2nd draft of her new script with actors Ger Kelly and Kate Gilmore. A Holy Show is about the 1981 hijacking of an Aer Lingus flight from London to Paris. It was hijacked by an ex Trappist Monk with a bottle of water as his weapon.The plane was diverted to Paris, where Lawrence Downey, the hijacker, demanded that the then Pope, John Paul II, release the third secret of Fatima.The hijack happened just three days before Bobby Sands died, ten days before the assassination attempt on John Paul II and a short two weeks after the Iran hostage crisis had been resolved. Within five years, Ireland would be overtaken by “moving statue fever” and the tragic death of Ann Lovett as well as the Kerry Babies case.This hijack, has triggered Janet’s imagination and she says “it seems to signify the end of a kind of age of innocence, or indeed, an age of ignorance.The Ireland of that hijack is almost unrecognisable to us now.This is the most provocative impulse for me to write the play”.

MERMAID SPACE Other news from Mermaid is we are delighted to announce two new sets of Artists in Residence. The first are Dance Artists Karen Gleeson and Aoife McAtamney. Both artists will work on two new works. Karens first is a complex and stunningly beautiful piece about how people survive and overcome difficulties.The piece is called Hear My Hands and Karen is working with service users in Bray Lakers and CRC as well as a collaboration with Dermot Marrey and Eoin Murphy. Karen will start researching her second new work in 2018. Aoife is going to premier two performances during her year long residency.The first, a performance of original music and movement in collaboration with Shane Holly titled ‘Pink Breath & The Sung Essay’. Both Karen and Aoife’s pieces will be presented in First Fortnight Festival 2017. As part of the dance artists in residence Mermaid will also have the wonderful Aisling O’Coineen working again with Bray Institute of Further Education dance students to make an off-site work for International Dance Day. Mermaid is also beside itself with delight as we welcome Theatre Lovett as theatre artists in residence. Louis Lovett and Muireann Ahern are two of Ireland’s most experienced, committed and impactful practitioners in the field of theatre for young audiences. In the last 5 years alone, they have had 4 Dublin Theatre Festival premieres, completed 5 extensive Irish tours, 2 USA tours and an Australian tour including the Sydney Opera House.They are recognised for highly detailed production values and extensive outreach and Actor training programmes and we, Mermaid, are going to have them and their expertise in Wicklow working with children, young people, local artists and as well as communities and groups working in Arts and Health and Arts and Disability contexts.Watch this space and our programme as we finalise our plans and start to announce plans for 2018.

MADE IN MERMAID Made in Mermaid is an initiative where we offer a range of supports to artists to help the creation and presentation of new work. This coming season we have two pieces which we are commissioning the first with visual artist Eleanor Phillips and the second with Storyteller Paul Timoney. Eleanor Phillips work is rooted in collaboration with others, mostly with communities of place and interest. Mermaid have commissioned Eleanor to develop a new work which involves conversations with a group of older women. Meeting the group weekly for three to four months Eleanor and her group have crafted small figurines and they have discussed the experience of aging with their feminist lenses perched firmly on their noses. These conversations have often yielded insights into how their own mannerisms are responses to power/powerlessness and visibility/invisibility. It is these insights which Eleanor will explore in her new work. Eleanor also plans to collaborate with our dance artist in residence Karen Gleeson. Like all new work, the piece is emerging from Eleanor’s conversations and research. It is as yet untitled but will be in the medium of film. For now it is a unique opportunity for a group of older women to share and translate some of their experiences and present those ideas to their and our peers. Mermaid is really pleased to announce that we have Paul Timoney working for eight weeks with students in New Court School & St Andrew’s National School. Paul is a storyteller, artist, teacher and general maker of things. Paul has performed previously at our YARN Festival where he facilitated a fun workshop titled Beautiful Beautiful Bugs, in which toddlers and parents got to make customised bugs using recycled materials, before starring in an impromptu story-making/ telling adventure.Throughout his residency, Paul will invite pupils to respond to each others’ drawings, writings, stories, poems and other endeavours, in order to build an unbelievably brilliant story-related-something, which will come about as a result of the creative-conversation between the schools.We believe that by enlisting Paul to work with the talented and energetic students in both schools, we are surely going to have an explosive and surprising 8 weeks of learning, fun and creativity. We will complete this Storyteller In Residence programme during YARN Storytelling Festival Bray in November.

Opening THURSDAY 28 September 2017 | 6pm Free | Exhibition runs FRIDAY 29 September − SATURDAY 28 October | 10am − 6pm Helen O’Connell is a sculptor based in County Wicklow. This exhibition is a very personal body of work for me created while processing a deep sense of grief and loss. In the face of life’s erratic, and often cruel curveballs, I return again and again to the circle and its symbolism which has been a recurring trope in my work.The circle represents the divine, the unknowable, the immeasurable (a circle can only be measured by the arithmetical Pi or as an irrational number whose final decimal place can never be resolved..). Circles offer us meditative spaces to contemplate the cycles of life and the fluid nature of energy which is always in flux. In engaging with the work the hope is to create a contemplative space which evokes a tactile response to the materials. Although primarily a stone sculptor, for this exhibition at the Mermaid I have been exploring the Japanese meditative practice of ‘enso’, a ritualistic daily ink drawing of the circle alongside photographic work in collaboration with artist Michael Durand.

See www.createschool.ie for details of their competition) There have been storytellers in Wicklow since before the area was even called Wicklow.That’s a story in itself. Some came invited and some certainly weren’t but they have all left their mark and helped shaped this remarkable county. After the success of their wonderfully original and innovative film “Freedom - A 1916 Story” Createschool return to launch their latest work. Using stop motion animation, handmade sets and customised LEGO mini figures they have created a series of short films that will explore some of the great stories, myths, legends and characters of Wicklow in their usual engaging and entertaining style. This exhibition is part of YARN Storytelling Festival. Now in its eigth year,Yarn is a community-based non-profit making festival that strives to bring the wonderful art-form of storytelling to as many people in our community as possible. Her work has frequently combined education, research and artistic practice.This exhibition is a response to the findings of a research project she instigated in UCD School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2014. Emma lives in Greystones, and is a founder member of Outpost Studios in Bray Co.Wicklow. She completed a BFA at NCAD in 1997 and an MFA in 2006. She has been commissioned and supported by the Arts Council Ireland, CREATE, Wicklow, Carlow, Cavan and Kildare County Councils. Her work has been shown in Ireland the UK, Germany, Denmark and the US and can be found in many private and public collections including: OPW, AIB, DIT, and UCD. Two giants of the Irish trad scene, Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny are uniting for an evening of great music, a mixture of traditional songs, and originals composed by Andy. Between them, Irvine and Lunny have been at the helm of legendary bands like Sweeney’s Men, Planxty, The Bothy Band, Mozaik, LAPD and recently Usher’s Island. Their unique style of accompaniment is an ongoing influence in the wider world of Irish music. Lunny and Irvine will present a programme of Irish music and Andy’s songs with a bit of Eastern European music.

The Crucible was written in 1953 by the American playwright Arthur Miller. It is a dramatised and partially fictionalised story of the infamous Salem witch trials, which took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony between 1692 and 1693. It was inspired by the 1950’s McCarthy hearings that aimed to root out communists in the USA. This play continues to affect audiences by allowing them to see how dark desires and hidden agendas can be played out. Within the 90-minutes of Yarn spinning and music, Audiences will go from Enthralled silence to Dancing in the aisles. Famous for his live entertainment and love of a good night out on the town. Accompanied on Piano by Cian Boylan featuring never before told stories, half-truths, half-fictions and an introduction to Jerry’s brand new songs and fantastical adventures as well as some old favourites.

Parking
Mermaid has FREE underground parking for all evening and weekend shows.There is pay & display overground parking available.
Club Films Some of the films we screen here at Mermaid have not been certified by the Irish Censorship Office. In order to screen these films we need to operate as a film club.This nominal fee has been integrated into the ticket price for all CLUB films. Everyone over 18 years is welcome to attend club films.
