Welcome to the first season of 2013! This year we will cover a four month period with each season brochure, giving you plenty of time to plan your Mermaid outings in advance. As you might remember we asked you for your feedback on our new design and got some great comments and suggestions and have made adjustments accordingly, we hope this makes the brochure easier to use. We have also introduced some great promotional offerings designed to help you get the most out of the season. These include the First Fortnight Frenzy offer for early birds and the Mermaid Seasonal Menu. In the spirit of new offerings we also have the new Mermaid Membership which offers lots of perks as well as a chance to support your arts centre. This year we will be working with a really exciting creative team, designer Tom Hughes, illustrator Kate Brangan and Mermaid poet-in-residence Caitriona O’Reilly. Each season they will work together to create a unique brochure with original illustrations, poetry and design specially created just for Mermaid audiences. At the centre of the brochure you will find the season poem by Caitriona with illustrations by Kate. We hope you enjoy the new season! Nora and the Mermaid Team

Spanish Fly Caitríona O’Reilly Not glass-green at all but iridescent; a mineral-winged insect ground to powder with toads’ bones, moles’ teeth and iron filings; a glittering suspension I gave him to drink, unknowing, for what he made me see: not the globe but the map’s foxed edges, not the sentence but the syllable, not the embroidery but the unpicked stitch.

Overhead, the voice of the aeroplane drops an octave, and I know fear. From him I learned my life is chemical, sub rosa; that that is how it is lived. I twist silently in my cell. Break a Leg ‘We’re going to make a play out of our own lives and we’re putting it on in three weeks. Now let’s get started...’ Break a Leg is Peter Sheridan’s new one man show based on his recently published memoir by the same name. Exploring the story of his life in the theatre it meanwhile touches on so much more. A wonderfully insightful work which touches the wider culture and politics of Ireland in the 1960s and 1970s. The theatre, seen through Sheridan’s eyes, can do much more than entertain; it can itself be a vehicle of social change.

Critically acclaimed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with 5 star reviews Are There More of You?, is the tale of four women living seemingly different lives all on the verge of a nervous breakthrough, linked only by the same postcode. All the parts are played by Alison Skilbeck, an actor perhaps best known for her role in the long running radio favourite: The Archers. A pitch-perfect performance from Skilbeck makes this a hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking one woman show.

He has provided identities for Bray's Arcadia Festival and Belfast's Household Festival. Having spent many summers with his grandmother in Dalkey, the Dart journey to Bray never fails to inspire. He also plays cello with the band The Lowly Knights hughestom.com

Kate Brangan - Illustrator Kate Brangan is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. She grew up in Dublin and attended IADT, Dún Laoghaire until 2005. She has worked in Dublinbased design agencies for the past seven years and is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Communication Design at Central Saint Martins, London. Kate’s illustration work for Mermaid has been greatly inspired by the beauty of the Bray and Wicklow landscape. Finely detailed, it treads the line between organic and architectural forms. katebrangan.com.

Catriona O'Reilly - Poet-in-Residence Caitríona O’ Reilly lives in Wicklow. She attended Trinity College Dublin and St. John’s College Cambridge. She has published two collections of her work: The Nowhere Birds, which won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature in 2002 and The Sea Cabinet in 2006. Caitriona will be publishing a new poem in the Mermaid brochure for each season of 2013. This season’s poem Spanish Fly is written in a monologue form, spoken by a female speaker who has administered Spanish Fly to an absent man. Traditionally, Spanish Fly was used as both poison and aphrodisiac, so there is ambiguity about her intention. It is a blackly humorous poem about disillusion.
