Technically astounding, dazzling yet lush, powerful yet lyrical, Castañeda has single-handedly transformed the arpa llanera, or Colombian harp, into one serious jazz instrument. Lifeboat Lifeboat is the extraordinary true story of 15 year olds Bess Walder and Beth Cummings. Set in World War II, it is a story of courage, survival and enduring friendship. In 1940, a ship, The City of Benares, set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the relentless bombing and dangers of war torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed and sank. Only eleven of the evacuees survived. Bess and Beth spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat, willing each other to survive. Lifeboat tells their story. Suitable for children over 8 years.

Counterpoints – Joyce in Dublin and Paris Ronan Guilfoyle’s acclaimed innovative musical piece is inspired by the music quoted in the works of James Joyce specifically the works written in Dublin and Paris. Partly written and partly improvised and using street sounds from Dublin and Paris, the piece also uses text from various works both as a generator for the music, and in spoken word format as an integral part of the piece. The suite reveals new aspects to the musicality of Joyce’s prose, and creates a unique environment for improvising musicians to explore the work of Joyce through musical means.

Baltic Amber Rational Pliny considered it an emetic property of the sea beached with the whale’s disgorged ambergris after an ice-choked winter. But for the Greeks it meant the sun. A falling star, a shattered axle-tree; Phaëthon, that original boy-racer, crashed and burned. His sisters, in the immense geologic time of their grief, turned into ginkgos, living fossils exuding buttery tears, swallowing blossoms, small frogs, feathers, insects with pollen grains on their wings. Rubbing it imparts a charge that anchors all light-bodied things to its particled heart, as if it secreted the light’s properties in its bubbled interior: elektron, bony amber, Eocene sun between finger and thumb. Before he taught music, cellist Keith Reynolds was just another struggling musician trying to make it in the city. Now a settled family man, Keith begins to grow increasingly nostalgic about his bohemian youth. When his wife decides to host British exchange student Sophie, the wistful musician finds the impulsive nature that he has so successfully repressed once again bubbling to the surface. Dublin Sound Lab – Mirrors of Earth The Irish premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s seminal chamber-ensemble Maa. Originally conceived as a ballet, in this re-imagining as Mirrors of Earth the complete work is performed with a newly commissioned video by Cork-based artist Ailbhe Ní Bhriain. The seven movements, varying in force from surround-sound ‘tape’ to an ensemble of nine musicians, display Saariaho’s characteristically luxuriant textures and the themes with which she infuses her work – distance, longing, journey and sense of place. Ní Bhriain’s video references the sense of dislocation within a landscape using constructed imagery to create scenes in which the dimensions of time and place are out–of–joint.

torytelling is the oldest and most democratic of art forms. Humans are hard-wired for stories and we have been creating them and telling and retelling them since we emerged from our caves, and maybe even before that. It’s often said that the Irish are a nation of storytellers. But if that is the case, then so are the Scots and the Arabs and the Jews and the Indians and the native peoples of all the great continents. But the old storytellers were gone and the stories lay on dusty shelves on old tapes and in archives, and new technologies and media made the world a global village. Unexpectedly and without notice, the stories and storytellers re-emerged in the 1980’s in a slow quiet worldwide reawakening - firstly, in small groups, in libraries, in communities and then in performance at larger gatherings and festivals in many different places throughout Ireland. It came as a surprise that people, despite all the paraphernalia of new technology, still love to listen to and tell stories.
Yarn – Bray’s Festival of Story & Song, has also emerged in unexpected places – community centres, schools, along the cliff walk and of course in Mermaid Arts Centre. People of all ages and backgrounds in Bray have responded and Samhain/ November has become the time that the people now associate with story and song. It is the perfect time, the dark nights are closing in, the year comes to an end. We huddle close and listen. Let a story weave its magic on you at Yarn - Bray’s Festival of Story and Song, Friday 15 to Sunday 24 November in Mermaid and lots of other locations around the town of Bray. The Great Beauty (15A) Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty might well qualify as a masterpiece. Jap Gambardella is a celebrated journalist contemplating a life lived among preening socialites, and pretentious artists of Rome’s decadent social scene. As he reminisces on his life, which has also been the life of the city, he realises he has spent most of it searching on the rooftops and in the gutters for what he calls la grande bellezza – “the great beauty”. What he actually finds is gangsterism, triviality, hypocrisy and decadence. A stunning piece of film making which paints the eternal city of Rome in a glorious shimmering light.

A story is alive! It must never die.
Long after the teller has passed on, his tale will still be
shining bright. We tell them now and
live them again
until we emerge on the other side of the story with our
eyes opened wide. A good story well told
leaves warm memories.
From birth to burial
we live a tale.
What is history if not a moment on the tongue.
Thanks to Jess Smith & Brendan Nolan for these words of wisdom

Wadjda
(15A)
Wadjda is a movie of firsts. This first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia is the story of a young girl living in a suburb of Riyadh determined to raise enough money to buy a bike in a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue. Even more impressive, Wadjda is the first feature film made by a female Saudi filmmaker. In a country where cinemas are banned and women cannot drive or vote, writer- director Haifaa Al Mansour has broken many barriers with her simple and charming film. The Act
Killing (CLUB)
A true cinematic experiment, this provocative documentary explores the genocide of more than one million people in Indonesia. Director Oppenheimer invites a group of former killers, including paramilitary leader Anwar Congo, to re-enact their crimes from their own perspective. These men perform detailed re-enactments of their crimes with pride, despite the ghastly nature of the scenes. But as movie and real-life violence begin to overlap, Anwar’s pride gradually gives way to regret and we see a man overwhelmed by the horrific acts he has chosen to share with the world.

What Maisie Knew
(15A)
Little Maisie is the casualty of the acrimonious divorce of two rich Manhattanites: rock star Julianne Moore and art dealer Steve Coogan. Abandoned by her self-absorbed parents, Maisie is left to the informal custody of their new partners, waiter Alexander Skarsgård and nanny Joanna Vanderham. Brilliant performances and inspired direction make this updating of Henry James’s novel an outstanding comedy-drama of contemporary adult relationships, as seen from the point of view of an innocent child.

Peaks of Present, Sheets of Past Tom Flanagan & Megs Morley’s collaborative work over the last number of years has been an ongoing investigation of the language of cinema and its relationship to history and memory. Their series of moving image work exploring real and imagined politically complex sites and forgotten histories attempts to intervene into collective understandings of the present, exploring the space between images, memory, knowledge and action. Peaks of Present, Sheets of Past is the first time in Ireland that a selection of their past film works are being screened in the context of their new moving image installations.
