For the past twelve years, Mermaid Arts Centre has played a key role in shaping and contributing to the cultural offering and creative lives of Wicklow County. I have recently been appointed Artistic Director and am delighted to start to plan, with the Mermaid Board and team, to build on that success. I believe art touches the profound values that form and bind society together. Yes art entertains, but for me what is most important is that it also provokes thought and promotes understanding. In programming a centre where all art forms sit side by side, I am struck by how certain disciplines are embraced more than others. How popularity creates a hierarchy and how that hierarchy presents real responsibilities to arts centres like Mermaid. It is generally accepted the arts lift our spirits and broaden our minds. As a centre for all art, it is our responsibility to ensure less popular work is not undervalued. It is our duty to represent a broad range of work which might be less popular and at times less commercial but is no less important. This in turn leads us as a centre of art and also a centre of community, to the fundamental responsibility of ensuring we live in a society which truly values creativity for all. In the coming months we are presenting and supporting the work of musicians, theatre makers, visual artists, dancers and talented local artists and makers. Our programme is broad and eclectic; it is a programme of which we are proud. We know there are shows for each and every one of you, our audience and we hope you’ll be able to find the time to come visit. Join us to watch great film, theatre and dance and come along to our gallery openings - visit as often as you can. When you visit please talk to us and tell us what you think because as a cultural centre, without our audience, we are incomplete. Niamh O’Donnell

Mermaid
S P A C E a rt i st r e s i d e nc i e s Artists and audiences are at the heart of Mermaid Arts Centre. We believe in the importance of self expression and also the importance of supporting the creation of work which relates to contemporary events. We are interested in work that reflects our lives and helps us find meaning. In 2014 we are introducing Mermaid SPACE, a residency programme running from June to September. These residencies are divided into three types; Research and Development, Creation and Production. We have invited four artists from Wicklow and further afield to work in residence in 2014. Aine Stapleton is a choreographer and dancer. She is in the process of creating an original dance piece called Dear Baby, based on the life and writings of Lucia Joyce. Lucia was a talented dancer, musician and writer whose work was mostly destroyed after her death. Aine has permission to use much of what remains of Lucia’s papers, including diary extracts and family letters creatively. The piece will be presented as part of Wicklow Council Arts Office Programme 2014 and also supported by Dance Ireland’s Residency Support Award 2014. Aine will work with artists including Jose Miguel Jimenez to blend film, music and dance to express Lucia’s story. Aine is of interest to us not just as a Wicklow artist or because there is a direct connect with Bray (Lucia holidayed here) but because she engages in contemporary themes of gender and politics. Aine will be looking at what it can mean to be ill, to be misunderstood and also what it means to be free.
Gary Keegan and Feidlim Cannon (Brokentalkers) are developing their new work Future Forecasts, with artists Jessica Kennedy and Sean Millar. The piece will feature a group of senior citizens (from Wicklow and South County Dublin) and will explore their hopes, dreams and fears for the future; from robots taking over the world to aging, health, faith and the right to die. This piece will bear witness to the real experiences of the men and women in the cast and therefore, like all of Gary and Feidlim’s work, will deal with difficult issues in a real and personal way. They, and their collaborators will weave alternate experiences into a story in a way that helps us as an audience to look at things we normally don’t hear or see, to give us a new perspective. Future Forecasts will be developed and presented in Mermaid before it plays in Dublin Theatre Festival 2014.
Shaun Dunne (with Aisling Byrne and Lisa Walsh) are working as part of Talking Shop Ensemble on a new work called Advocacy. The piece explores the subject of choice and our ability to selfadvocate. In his research Shaun has been largely inspired by the inner workings of a disability service, the people who work there and the conflicts of choice that is part of their daily lives. Shaun is collaborating with a special needs facilitator, Aisling Byrne of John of Gods Kildare, service for Adults with intellectual Disabilities. Her work focuses on decision making and guidance for people with varying intellectual ability - giving them the understanding of consequence and importance of speaking up and having their opinions’ heard. Talking Shop are interested in these issues as they believe it holds an interesting parallel for Ireland and young people today. Talking Shop are supported by Dublin Fringe Festival and Advocacy will be presented in Mermaid on 23rd August before moving to Dublin Fringe Festival in September 2014.

Noelle Brown
by Junior
A poignant and wonderfully humorous account of a woman turned detective on a mission to reveal the truth. From an early age Noelle Brown was told she was adopted. While this made her feel exotic as a child, she soon learned the word was used by adults in a hushed voice. ‘A moving story stoically enacted by Brown and Bríd Ní Neachtain, who beautifully brings to life the letters that form the linchpin of Browne’s journey…..powerful piece of work.’ ★★★★ The Irish Times

How To Be A Child? Carmel Benson
From the outset, Carmel Benson’s work has engaged with themes of childhood. In this forthcoming exhibition she further extends the exploration by using personal and familial photographic records and recollections as a source. Through the media of drawing, painting and printmaking she engages with and transforms this material, often overlaying and embedding images with sections of key doctrinal texts which informed and pervaded the belief systems of the society of her childhood. Added to this new imagery, the exhibition draws in congruent elements of existing work, e.g. the birth/Sheelagh-na-gig/ matriarch stream and images of emersion in nature and identification with animals. This combines to bring us a highly personal exhibition of intense perception and originality.
