And more great news, we are delighted to announce that, with thanks to the Arts Council, Ciaran Taylor of Carpet Theatre Company will be our Resident Theatre Artist for 2012. The Runway (PG)

The Runway is a new Irish film, inspired by the true story of a South American pilot who crash-landed his plane near Mallow in 1983. Paco Thomas and his mother live in Dromoleen, a remote country village, where the local factory has closed, inflicting misery on the town’s inhabitants. Young Paco spends his evenings learning Spanish from an ancient Linguaphone tape in anticipation of his long-departed father’s arrival home. However, when a Colombian pilot crash-lands his plane outside the town, Paco is soon called upon as the sole Spanish speaker and he manages to convince the reticent locals to treat the stranger as one of their own. The Runway is a breathtaking account of an unlikely force uniting a fractured community. Dir: Ian Power, 2010 e8/e6.50 Conc.

Fidil

Fidil created a bang in November 2009 with the release of their album ‘3’ which was described as ‘...a masterclass in the marriage of tradition and musical exploration, and a milestone in traditional music.’ (Siobhan Long, The Irish Times) Belief in their ability and their instrument sets them apart as they perform with fiddles alone. It is their diverse and ground-breaking use of this instrument coupled with the depth of tunes of their native Donegal tradition which make them one of the most unique and entertaining ensembles. Join Aidan O’Donnell, Ciarán Ó Maonaigh, and Damien McGeehan, as they boldly go where no traditional music band has gone before. The Great Gatsby

TUE 11 – SAT 15 OCT @ 8PM

“I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. There was music from my neighbour’s through the summer nights. In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.” Jay Gatsby has built his life around the dream of regaining a former love. He has even located his lavish mansion on West Egg, Long Island across the bay from Daisy’s house for the sole purpose of seeing the green light on the end of her dock. A faithfully romantic dramatisation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel and a stunning description of Jazz Age America - fast living, silent movies, jazz music and obscene wealth. Senna (12A)

MON 17 OCT @ 8PM

The story of Ayrton Senna, perhaps the greatest race car driver who ever lived, is an epic tale that literally twists at every turn. In the mid 1980s, Senna, a young, gifted driver, exploded onto the world of Formula One racing. As a Brazilian in a predominantly European sport and a man of faith in an arena filled with cynicism, Senna had to fight hard—both on and off the track. Facing titanic struggles, he conquered Formula One and became a global icon. Told solely through the use of archival footage, Asif Kapadia’s documentary is a thrill ride worthy of its daring subject. Adrenaline will be pumping as cameras from inside Senna’s car put you smack-dab in the driver’s seat. Buckle your seat belt and get ready. Dir: Asif Kapadia, 2010 €8/€6.50 Conc.

Beginners (15A)

MON 31 OCT @ 8PM

Drawing upon autobiographical events, Beginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the two intertwined storylines of Oliver and his father, Hal. As Oliver starts a new relationship he finds himself constantly dwelling upon his recently deceased father’s last years. At the age of 75, shortly after the death of his wife, Oliver’s father Hal came out of the closet. Disregarding his advanced years and a diagnosis of terminal cancer, Hal gleefully embraced his senior bon vivant lifestyle: hitting the clubs, buying a new wardrobe, and, eventually, dating a new boyfriend half his age. Throughout the film, these two narrative strands subtly illuminate each other, as Oliver strives to reconcile his father’s exemplary lessons on hope, courage, and romance to his own life. The Tree of Life (12A)

MON 7 NOV @ 8PM

A quiet suburb in 1950s America, a family of five and a telegram announcing the death of one of the young couple’s three sons. The Tree of Life is an epic poem capturing the cycle of life and the minutiae which influence the kind of people we become. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Terrence Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life. When Jolie Met Christie

FRI 18 NOV @ 8PM

Before his death in 2007, Christie Hennessy had hoped to tell his own story on stage. As a tribute to him, and using Christie’s musical hero Al Jolson as a catalyst, director Ray Yeates, playwright Seán McCarthy and performer Aonghus McAnally created this special show featuring Christie’s greatest hits and a live band. Christie Hennessy was inspired by Al Jolson from his childhood in Tralee to his tours of folk clubs in England in the 1970s. Now Jolson returns the compliment, comparing the love and affection that Hennessy inspired to the blockbusting recognition and fame he himself achieved. Was it worth it? What is the price of success and fame? Here, from their new perspective, both men give their different views on music, family and their two very different legacies. Axis: Ballymun €16/€14

Netnakisum

SAT 19 NOV @ 8PM

The hills of Wicklow will soon be very much alive with the sound of Netnakisum, a young Austrian string trio brimming with attitude. If saying their name is a challenge (before you reach for the dictionary it’s the German word for street musicians – spelt backwards), be warned that this genrebusting classical/folk/whatever ensemble takes no prisoners, careering helter-skelter from Straussian waltzes and foot-stomping drinking songs to Britney Spears covers and avant-garde jazz – with a hint of yodelling thrown in for good measure, of course. But lurking behind the group’s energy and quirkiness are three very serious and accomplished artists who work very hard to deliver something different. All in all, this is a feast for the senses and an exhilarating live show. €16/€14

Chekhov’s Shorts

SUN 20 NOV @ 8PM

Sharp and viciously cruel at times, this selection of five of Chekhov’s early short plays provides plenty of laughs and not a little insight into the workings of the Russian playwright’s later works. Played by three members of the European Arts Company with just the right level of over-enthusiastic comedy to make them accessible to modern ears. Not that the raw comedy needs much updating. The set-ups might be specific to the middle classes in late 19th century Russia but the humour depends on exactly the same elements of arrogance, pomposity, neighbourly rivalry and marital strife that provide the substance for many modern day comedians. The First Grader (12A)

MON 21 NOV @ 8PM

Shot on location in Kenya, Justin Chadwick’s stirring drama turns the obstinate desire for an education on the part of 84-year-old Kikuyu tribesman Maruge (unforgettably played by Oliver Litondo) into a deeply affecting and emotionally uplifting tale. Taking advantage of a 2002 Kenyan law that guaranteed free education for all, Maruge—a veteran Mau Mau freedom fighter who suffered at the hands of the British—shows up at his local one-room school, walking stick in hand, and is reluctantly turned away by the sympathetic principal. But Kimani returns the next day, and the day after that, until his eventual acceptance. The effect is very moving and ultimately hopeful; despite Kenya’s—and by extension, Africa’s—troubled past, humanity, here in the form of one aged tribesman, refuses to give up. General Arrangement THU 8 SEPT - THU 1 NOV Julie Merriman & Marcel Broodthaers This exhibition brings together drawings by the Irish artist Julie Merriman and an installation by Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-76). Julie Merriman’s work is centred in her exploration of drawing as a form of communication. Working from archival material she investigates the drawing of specialist fields including historic and contemporary architecture, engineering, science, cartography and mathematics to understand how drawing works as a technology to impart specific information. Marcel Broodthaers’ slide projection Bateau Tableau, (1973) is based on the anonymous 19th century painting bought by Broodthaers in a curiosity shop. Using a camera, the artist subjected the painting to a teasing analysis, shifting the focus from details to the overall image, mirroring the viewer’s own act of perception while looking at a work of art. Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) was a Belgian poet, photographer, filmmaker and influential conceptual artist. His work is included in many museum collections around the world including Tate, London and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Julie Merriman (b. 1963) graduated with an MA in Visual Art Practices from IADT in 2009. Merriman and has participated in numerous exhibitions, residencies and symposiums in Ireland and the UK. Headspace is a project that took place over the course of the summer 2011, with Maria McKinney and Transition Year Students from Loreto Secondary School, Bray and Presentation College Bray. Using the metaphor of the Unbuilding architectural intervention in Mermaid Arts Centre, artist Maria McKinney worked with local transition year students to make new work that explored themes of passing the time, idling and doing nothing. Together they have made a collaborative body of work including sculpture, video and installation. Maria McKinney received a BA from University of Ulster in 2005. Solo shows include The Lab, Dublin (2010) and Context Gallery, Derry and Ballina Arts Centre, Co. Mayo (both in 2008). Her work is concerned with ideas of boredom and escapism. Working with familiar objects and materials such as the products or tools of mass consumption; her work aims to draw out an underlying significance through a systematic process of intervention. McKinney considers the physicality of the chosen items as well as their habitual use or purpose.
