WELCOME The Proclamation of the Republic is one of the most important documents in Irish modern history. Its first words – ‘Irish Men and Irish Women’ – shows an intent to establish a new inclusive republic. Its progressiveness is clearly apparent in its assertion for ‘equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens’. This mention of gender equality shows true leadership especially when we consider that we, Irish women, didn’t get the vote for another seven years. So, in the past 100 years, can we say there has been a social revolution for women in Ireland? Yes. Of course. We all know how many positive changes there have been. But sadly, I believe our society is still fraught with inequality and discrimination.Women in Ireland are paid 14% less than their male counterparts; only 10% of corporate boards are made up by women; childcare is seen a women’s issue (!) suggesting the role of men in the family is not valued; and recently, our national theatre launched its commemorative year with only one female playwright in the ten productions programmed. So why, in a society where the vast majority of us (women and men) believe it is wrong to discriminate on the basis of gender, is there not balance? In order to fully understand why this gender problem exists, we must first work out and understand its deep rooted nature, how it is woven into the fabric of those positions of power and authority where ethical codes of equality are formulated. Women are economically and politically disempowered.Yet we do not raise our children – girls or boys – with the belief that one is more deserving than the other. We need to work out how to prevent both conscious and unconscious societal disempowerment. In an unequal society both women and men suffer. It is time for true and real change. Like those who established our modern state, I believe we as a nation are ardent supporters of an egalitarian society. I therefore call on all Wicklow feminists (male and female) to take a stand and active role by taking part: join #WakingTheFeminists and help us continue the journey towards gender equality. Niamh O’Donnell (Artistic Director) and the Mermaid Team.

The Office for Common Sound Sven Anderson
The Office for Common Sound is a project by artist Sven Anderson, which looks at the role of sound in our everyday lives. In May and June Sven will set up an office in central Bray and will open his doors for anyone and everyone to come and explore the sounds of Bray. Sound plays a significant role in defining the spaces we inhabit – from the privacy of our homes to the public spaces that comprise our towns and cities – and yet we rarely communicate about what form it takes, how it affects us, and how it contributes to our sense of place. By bringing attention to everyday sounds and soundscapes, The Office for Common Sound seeks to develop a listening community in the greater Bray region, celebrating the seaside town’s unique acoustic identity while simultaneously exploring more universal themes involving acoustic territories, the built environment, and common (shared) experiences. Activities facilitated through the office will include: discussions, soundwalks, field recording sessions, group listening events, guest presentations, reading groups, sound mapping and sound installations / interventions. More information and scheduling information will be published in April at: http://office.minorarchitecture.org To get involved and to receive updates on schedules and events, please write to: theofficeforcommonsound@gmail.com The Office for Common Sound is an artwork by Sven Anderson and is supported as part of the Strategic Arts Projects initiative by The Wicklow County Arts Office, Wicklow County Council, Mermaid Arts Centre and The Arts Council.

MERMAID SPACE Mermaid Space, is our residency programme where we offer as many supports as possible to artists to help them make work in Wicklow. This is a way for us to keep artists at our core, because keeping them at our centre, at our heart, helps keep us as a space relevant. Our Dance Artists in residence, Nick Bryson, Karen Gleeson and Aisling O’Coineen will be working over the summer months on three new works which we will present in September. Theatre Lovett will work in June on their incredible musical fable A Feast of Bones (by Frances Kay and Theatre Lovett) which premiered at Dublin Theatre Festival in 2013. For four days they will work on remounting the piece getting ready for a UK and national tour – we’ll have Nico Brown, Martin Brunsden, Lisa Lambe, Louis Lovett, Amelie Metcalfe and Muireann Ahern (Director) all working in our space. Kate Heffernan (Writer), Gary Keegan (Director) and Denis Clohesy (Sound Artist) will be working on a new piece COUNTRY for two weeks in July (with a cast of four actors too we hope). The piece is a co-commission with Laois County Council and we’ll have an Artists Talk / Showing on July 15th at 6pm (see page 41), do join us! And finally we will also have artist Oonagh Murphy in residence the first week in August developing a new collaboration called Give Me Your Skin with theatre-maker Tom Ross Williams, we will have an Artists Talk / Showing on Friday 5th August (see page 46).

GAP DAY /// 15 aRTISTS, 13 VEnUES, UES, 8 COUn UES COUnTIES COU TIES At the beginning of 2016, the Gap Day pilot project was launched. An idea of Creative Producer Lian Bell in collaboration with Mermaid (funded by the Arts Council Theatre Development Award) Gap Day offered freelance theatre artists creative days where their dreaming, thinking and planning time was valued. Through an open submission, an exciting crop of 15 independent theatre-makers, directors, devisers, writers, designers, etc. across Ireland were given the opportunity to spend a day of creative development with access to a room in a local creative space and a small bursary for their time. The 2016 Gap Day artists are: Joe Brennan (storyteller, performer and playwright), Tom Creed (opera and theatre director), Vickey Curtis (theatremaker, writer and spoken word artist), Veronica Dyas (artist and theatre-maker), Mary Frances Doherty (theatre-maker), Emma Fisher (writer, puppeteer, set, costume and puppet designer), Gemma Gallagher (theatre-maker, performer and facilitator), Caroline Lynch (writer, actor and director), Oisin McKenna (writer, producer and performer), Oonagh Murphy (theatre director and creative facilitator), Emma O’Grady (actor, theatre-maker, writer, director, teacher, production manager and lighting technician), Eoin Ó hAnnracháin (director and theatre producer), Ciarán O’Melia (theatre-maker and designer), Maeve Stone (theatre-maker and director), and Dylan Tighe (actor, writer and musician).

MERMAID GALLERY YOUR PHOTOS, YOUR MEMORIES, OUR HISTORY In partnership with the Gallery of Photography As part of Mermaid Arts Centre 1916 commemorative programme we will exhibit selected works from The Photo Album of Ireland. Our photo albums give an insight into our private and public histories. Photographs from family albums or private collections often reveal details about how people lived and worked, the architecture, fashion, customs and daily life that official records don’t always capture. As generations pass our knowledge about this valuable social history is often lost. This exhibition will present two Wicklow families photo albums as well as other family albums from around the country. The images exhibited will cover the period from the invention of photography in 1839 up until the advent of digital photography in the late 1980s early 1990s. We will have an open call to the people of Wicklow to come along on two days to have their albums scanned and added to the national archive.
Opening THUR 31 March at 6pm | Exhibition runs FRI 1 April – SAT 14 May | 10am – 6pm FREE 11
MERMAID GALLERY OUTPOST STUDIOS Outpost Studios, established in 2015, is an independent artist studios set-up by eight Wicklow based artists: Joanne Boyle, Raine Hozier Byrne, Rachel Fallon, Emma Finucane, Laura Kelly, Joanna Kidney, Eleanor Philips, Ann Marie Webb. With a desire to explore ways that could sustain artists to work within their own locale, the members of Outpost Studios began their first year in Bray by opening the doors of their studios and inviting diverse audiences and communities to visit. The intention behind this was to introduce the many and varied ways in which contemporary art is made to new audiences, and in a broader sense, to raise awareness of what ‘culture’ might be and how it can be produced in our everyday world. Following this a series of talks was organised over the past year with a range of artists working in varied contexts. A mixture of award-winning artists and community activists from across Ireland came to present their work and engage in conversation.Topics discussed included: - innovative arts projects which engage specific communities; - international arts practice and bringing the global to the local; - ways in which artists might come together to create culturally inclusive events. These events were made possible with the invaluable support of Wicklow County Councils Project Arts funding. This exhibition includes an Opening Night and Outpost Studios welcome the opportunity to hear from a broader audience as to how they as a studio might further interact with various groups within the locality.
Opening THUR 26 May at 6pm | Exhibition runs FRI 27 May – SAT 9 July | 10am –6pm FREE 12
MERMAID GALLERY IN SUPPORT Andreas Kindler von Knobloch Andreas’ practice is focused on ideas of conviviality and participation through the creation of structures and installations referencing utopian ideals and collective environments. Andreas has both a collaborative and individual practice. His most recent work looks at cooperation and the negotiations inherent in support systems. This work is driven by the questions; what does it mean to offer support? How can we know that what we are offering is beneficial? And, is support something we give because we care or because we seek integration? In this exhibition Andreas will present new work which focuses on a series of support structures that highlight the negotiations inherent in the act of giving and receiving support. Using materials often overlooked in our architectural environment, he makes visible the infrastructure that supports our everyday lives. With this new work he is urging us to consider what is being supported. www.andreaskvk.com

BLOOMSDAY June
The dead What better way to celebrate Bloomsday than to immerse oneself in the household of the Misses Morkan in John Huston’s pitch-perfect adaptation of James Joyce’s The Dead. Set In Dublin in 1904 the mood of the evening is anguished as Gretta (Anjelica Huston) remembers a long-lost love, much to the incomprehension of her husband Gabriel (Donal McCann). John Huston’s subtle direction and Angelica Huston and Donal McCann’s delicately wrought performances perfectly capture the social atmosphere and emotional nuances of Joyce’s original text. For Huston, the film served as an elegant and melancholic farewell to Ireland and to life itself. THUR 16 June | 12noon €5 | Duration: 83 mins | Cert: CLUB Language: English

FILM FESTIVAL Brigid O’Brien and Mermaid Arts Centre have been talking. We’ve been talking about Wicklow having and needing a Film Festival. A Festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and would generally centre on some characteristic or aspect of that community. We’ve been talking about our film makers, about communal purpose, about entertainment and about group cohesiveness and human rights. We’ve decided, through the course of our discussions, that over two and a half days at the end of August we will actually do something. We will put together a small, niche, boutique festival. Over our festival we aim on presenting a range of films and shorts as well as having talks and discussions with Wicklow people (some of which will be experts) around issues of humanity, fairness and solidarity We want our festival to be a celebration which offers a little something for everyone and with a variety of screenings we hope to get as many of you involved as we can. Our aspiration is it will build a sense of unity and belonging or at the very least we will watch films together and talk and if we disagree we might actually learn something! Please keep your eyes peeled to our web-site and next season’s brochure for our festival line up and if you want to be involved and kept up to date please email wicklowfilmfestival@gmail.com FRI 26 + SAT 27 + SUN 28 August FREE – €8/6.50 49
