CLUB Whose is this song? (Chia e tazi pesen?)

MON 4 OCT @ 8pm

Have you ever got a song stuck in your head? Searching for the origins of a folk song she’d heard as a child, director Adela Peeva embarks on an odyssey through the Balkans. Her search is rewarded again and again, but reveals that reality is much darker than memory - she discovers the song in a range of different languages and styles; as love ditty, religious hymn, even military march. The song is a testament to the cultural ties binding the region’s warring ethnicities. Alternately humorous and alarming, Whose Is This Song? illustrates the stubborn madness of nationalism. The Diary of Anne Frank by Grigory Frid TUES 5 OCT @ 8pm Vivid and insightful, this heartrending opera recreates the world of 13 yearold Anne Frank in hiding, living in hope and fear, longing for normality for herself and her family. Russian composer Grigory Frid was so inspired by Anne Frank’s diary that he created the opera in 1969. Sung in English, this powerful story focuses on Anne Frank’s original words – her joy over a glimpse of blue sky, her determination to remain courageous, her humour and resilient hopes for freedom – all find moving and eloquent expression in the poignant score. This compelling production directed by Ingrid Craigie and Annilese Miskimmonis is very special as it is Opera Theatre Company’s last ever touring production after 24 years. e25 one act, 55mins, no interval

Thu 11 Nov @ 8pm

The famous tenor Caruso was trapped in the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. In order to return home to the family he loved, he had to escape his collapsing hotel room, cross a city swept by fire and fight his way past the military onto the only ferry out of town. Beautiful storytelling and live opera singing combine to reveal the heart behind a legend featuring live music from Puccini, Rossini, Leoncavallo, Tosti and the immortal song that Caruso introduced to the world, O Sole Mio. ‘Opera Singing with a pure fresh quality’ - The Scotsman e16 / e14 Conc

Tue 16 & Wed 17 Nov @ 8pm

Adapted by Arthur Riordan from the unfinished novel by Flann O’Brien. Flann O’Brien’s comic masterpiece is brought roaring to life by Arthur Riordan. The sell-out comic hit of the summer returns in the shape of Slattery’s Sago Saga! Tim Hartigan’s quiet life at Poguemahone Hall is shattered by the arrival of a Scotch woman with an evil plan. Hilarity and utter confusion abound in the shape of a politically-correct Leprechaun, a beautiful typist and a tycoon T.D. bent on bankrupting the country. The Illusionist

[12]

Mon 22 Nov @ 8pm

Our weary hero is an over-the-hill magician, complete with less-thanfriendly white rabbit; their adventures are based upon an unrealised script by Jacques Tati, the action of which director Chomet transposed to Scotland after he moved there in 2004. Always in search of a paying gig, the illusionist treks from Paris to the Western Isles to Edinburgh – acquiring, along the way, a young travelling companion who sincerely believes in his magical abilities. Rich with visual jokes, seductive 1950s period detail and breathtaking views of city and wilderness alike, this is the work of a master in his field – and one of the most gorgeous evocations of Scotland in cinema history. But their families are bitter enemies, and to be together the two lovers must be prepared to risk everything... Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky [15A]

Paris 1913. Coco Chanel attends the opening night of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. After this controversy Stravinsky’s fortunes took a tumble until seven years later, when Chanel put him and his family up at her majestic villa. With sublime music, sumptuous sets and moody intensity, Jan Kounen’s dual biopic captures the beauty and unease of 1920s Paris, evoking a pivotal era of upheaval in Western culture in two of its most famous protagonists. When an unhappy housewife tries leaving her husband for another man, she runs into even unhappier times in this brooding tale of explosive love. When she finally decides – despite two children and various creature comforts - to leave Samuel for good, revenge and blackmail ensue. UNBUILDING

UNBUILDING is an experimental visual arts project composed of 11 new commissions, an architectural intervention, screenings, international guests, local discussion and off–site events. There are twelve artists and three curators in the group, all who have some relationship with or connection to County Wicklow. The project developed through meetings, conversations, a reading group, studio visits, critical engagement, a website and also included a significant architectural collaboration. This process has led to the development and making of eleven new art works. The close working relationship with architects Gráinne Shaffrey and Tomás Ó Connor became a central element in which to focus the exhibition of the artists’ work. For this they have designed a timber structure to be inserted into Mermaid’s Gallery space and which will provide a platform to host a rotating exhibition (of one artist after the other) over eight weeks. The artists have used these resources to explore metaphor and allusion in the word and place shoreline. One Newfoundland artist, Angela Anthle, worked with a francophone school, L’Ecole Notre Dame du Cap at Port au Port, Newfoundland and with Ghaeilcholaiste Chiarrai in Tralee. Irish-based artists Anthony Kelly, David Stalling and Slavek Kwi work with installations using sound, moving images and objects. The Swimming Naked Prophecy

Thu 2 Dec – Sat 12 Feb

As the legendry investor Warren Buffett said: ‘Only when the tide goes out do you discover who has been swimming naked.’ Buffett’s celebrated metaphorical citation offers a humorous mental image of the serious repercussions of careless speculation, one befitting Ireland’s current economic situation with bank bailouts, disappearing billions and severe fiscal crisis. The Swimming Naked Prophecy is a group drawing exhibition initiated by Mermaid Arts Centre and featuring new work specifically made for the exhibition by twenty five contemporary Irish-based artists. The exhibition offers a range of responses by the invited artists to Ireland’s current social, economic and political circumstances, the recent economic crash and the current mood in Ireland. Artists include: Aideen Barry, Stephen Brandes, Mark Clare, Culturstruction, Clodagh Emoe, Fiona Hallinan, Sean Hillen, Jesse Jones, John Jones, Vera Klute, Sam Keogh, Sean Lynch, Brian Maguire, Bea McMahon, Tom Molloy, Teresa Nanigian, Isabel Nolan, Sorcha O’Brien The exhibition will run for 8 weeks in Mermaid Arts Centre before touring to a number of other venues. Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth a2.4 billion directly a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport, for 2010 is a69.15 million, that’s less than a1 a week for every household. So, when you next encounter inspirational architecture, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at
