Welcome to another late summer season in Mermaid where we invite you to slow down, take it easy and treat yourself to the finer things in life on offer here at Mermaid right through to September. This is a season of intriguing theatre, brilliant film, engaging workshops, insightful lectures, classic comedy and music which can transport you to another world. One such world is that of Monteverdi’s Orfeo, produced by Opera Theatre Company. Sung in English, this baroque masterpiece will captivate first time opera audiences and seasoned buffs alike. From Portugal comes Fado-singer Viviane, bringing this beautiful tradition to life on the Mermaid stage in early July. September sees legendary songstress Mary Coughlan take the stage with her distinctive and evocative sound. For our younger audiences we have some wonderful workshops including The Circus is Coming to Town workshop, Wonderland summer camp and the Ballet Ireland summer workshops. But here at Mermaid learning new skills is not just for the young! We have felting, bookmaking, basketry, street photography and pottery workshops for adults dotted throughout the programme too. If you prefer to learn by simply looking and listening why not take part in our film course? Or enjoy the many public lectures which will accompany our From Bray with Love exhibition. Our tenth anniversary celebrations continue this season with the launch of our Live at Mermaid album in September. A beautiful compilation of some of the most memorable nights of music in Mermaid seemed the ideal way to honour these special artists and this wonderful venue. Audiences also are welcome to show their support for the album by donating via fundit.ie. No donation too small (or too big!). So a bountiful third quarter awaits those who wish to wander by and enjoy the abundant fruits in this season’s programme whether you seek the tried and tested or those of a stranger nature, they are all ripe and ready for the taking. Nora and the Mermaid team

Truth and Realities – Real and Imagined

A thread of enquiry spans Mermaid’s 2012 artistic programme, as we explore representations of reality from different perspectives and through a variety of media. As a follow on to the documentary film course early this year, Mermaid offers a 6-week Cinema and Realism Film Course which looks at the important role film has in reproducing the world around us, with an opportunity to see five films which take varying approaches to the representation of reality. The exhibition From Bray with Love takes a nostalgic look at representations of the history of town, with amateur as well as professional footage, and postcards sent by holidaymakers visiting the area. Sunniva O’Flynn will present additional footage from the IFI archives in September. With this historical documentation of Bray in mind, co-founder of Dublin Street Photography Collective, Dermot Marrey will encourage people to experience and record the town of Bray in a different way, looking for new ways to define and capture the spirit of the town through a still image.

Arcadia Festival Update And finally! A massive ‘thank you!’ goes out to all those who made the Arcadia Festival so special. We were bowled over by the response from audiences and the support and participation of the local Bray community. We especially salute our Arcadia partners whose creativity and enthusiasm helped to make the festival such a success. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did!

Viviane

Mermaid presents Viviane, one of the most stunning voices in contemporary Portuguese music. Her distinctive style has at its core the beautiful Portuguese tradition of Fado, a genre defined by its plaintive, soulful lyrics and melancholic tone. Born in Nice, Viviane also draws on the French chanson she heard in her youth counting Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel amongst her influences. Listening to her music however, it is easy to tell that Viviane’s heart belongs to Fado as she surrounds her lavish voice with a fittingly traditional line-up of flute, Portuguese guitar, viola and double bass. Undoubtedly an evening for lovers of song.

The Third Policeman - Narrated by Stephen Rea with music composed by Colin Reid

Fri 27 jul @ 8PM

Flann O’Brien’s darkly comic masterpiece The Third Policeman forms the basis of this very special event selected by Abbey Theatre’s Literary Director and former Artistic Director of Mermaid, Aideen Howard. Comprising of a reading performance by Stephen Rea and music by composer Colin Reid (piano), Neil Martin (Cello), Becky Joslin (Cello) and Niamh Crowley (Violin), The Third Policeman is the inspiration for this literary and musical treat. Experience a murder thriller, a hilarious comic satire about an archetypal village police force, a surrealistic vision of eternity, the story of a tender brief unrequited love affair between a man and his bicycle, and a chilling fable of unending guilt. In this celebration of Irish literature, the live music is seamlessly blended to the wry and flexible voice of distinguished actor Stephen Rea. Selected Show ‘For an Artistic Director, there is a unique experiment in programming a new arts centre. Nothing is tried and tested! Everything is equally possible and impossible! In its first years Mermaid became a commissioner of new music, theatre, dance and visual art. Audiences in County Wicklow came in a spirit of curiosity and, later, loyalty. A brilliant new composition in response to a classic The Third Policeman is the perfect show for Mermaid.’ Aideen Howard was the Artistic Director of Mermaid from 2002-Dec 2005 €22/ 20

Damsels in Distress (15A)

MON 13 AUG @ 8pm

In this whimsical comedy, a trio of girls set out to change the maledominated environment of the Seven Oaks college campus, and to rescue their fellow students from depression, mainly by stuffing them with doughnuts or forcing them to tap dance. The beautiful cinematography by Doug Emmett captures girls—the damsels—in all their pastel glory, unafraid of heightening the nostalgia concerning campus life. Stillman captures the small details in the girls’ behaviour; their irrationalities, oddities and quirks. All the small cracks in the characters’ otherwise spotless appearances reveal not only their own but perhaps the whole world’s insanity. Director: Whit Stillman, 2011

Beloved

MON 3 SEP @ 8pm

Enchantingly led by Catherine Deneuve and her real-life daughter Chiara Mastroianni, this sly and exquisitely romantic musical-drama follows a mother and daughter’s twin misadventures in love. In Paris, 1964, carefree young Madeleine steals a gorgeous pair of high heels, and whilst wearing them is mistaken for an escort— an error that signals the next direction her life will take. Thirty years later Madeleine’s daughter, Vera, a lovely but reckless young woman’s romantic life is no simpler than that of her mother. Honoré has made a film of many delights, not least of which is the sight of Deneuve’s character strolling through Paris, singing through tears and revisiting her reckless youth. The passionate lover Aeneas’ alter ego is the Sailor who doesn’t want to be tied down. Shades of Bray

FRI 7 SEP @ 8pm

Sunniva O’Flynn, Curator of the Irish Film Institute, presents a programme of films from the collections of the IFI Irish Film Archive. The collection includes fiction and non-fiction films - both amateur and professional - which were made in and about Bray from the 1920s to modern times. Since the turn of the last century Bray has appeared as a backdrop to sunny summer holidays in a host of amateur films. With the establishment of the film studios at Ardmore, Bray began to appear in professional films, most often as an anonymous backdrop to big budget features, but also, occasionally, as itself. This programme includes a range of such material. €8/6.50

Mary Coughlan The Whole Affair

SAT 8 SEP @ 8pm

When ‘The Whole Affair: The Very Best of Mary Coughlan’ comes to Mermaid, audiences will see that the stage is where Mary survives. From a small square foot in front of a handful or a thousand people, she emotes, atones, reminisces and laments, because this is the very best of Mary Coughlan and you can’t hear the best until you’ve heard her story recited in every note. Throughout the 25 years of her quite extraordinary career Mary Coughlan has drawn heavily from her legendary heroes; Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Van Morrison, and Edith Piaff; yet she has also maintained an honesty about her music which is clearly and uniquely her own. Mermaid was officially opened with a performance by Mary Coughlan on 31 August 2002, so it is very fitting that she return to help Mermaid celebrate our 10th birthday. €20/18 The Very Best of Mary Coughlan

Joyced!

Joyced! takes us on a tour de force of Joycean Dublin, bringing the audience through the year, 1904, which Joyce would later make famous in Ulysses. It is a one-woman show but through multi-character performance (22 at least!) and magical word play, Joyced! depicts the people who were of huge importance to Joyce, such as his father and his cronies, Oliver St. John Gogarty, the tenor John McCormack, Alfred Hunter (the man who would later become Bloom in Ulysses) and of course Nora herself. Joyced! looks back at 1904 through the eyes of JoJo, a stallholder in Dublin’s Rathmines Market, with a dangerous obsession for all things Joycean. It is a chaotic and exciting whirlwind odyssey through the people, events and a year that would later be famously recreated in Ulysses. Performed by Breda Cashe. €16/14 (3 for €33)

Even The Rain

A gripping film about the making of a film in South America. Film director Sebastian, along with his hard-nosed producer Costa, sets out to make a revisionist drama about the Spanish conquest of the Americas. They decide to shoot in Bolivia, because it is the cheapest place in South America, and Sebastian casts a local man, Daniel, as the Taíno chieftain who led a rebellion against the Spaniards. Unbeknownst to them, Daniel is leading his community’s demonstrations against the government’s decision to privatise water. The two stories - the 1512 rebellion and the twenty-first-century riots - cleverly serve to underline the impact of colonialism on the New World and the continuing exploitation of its resources by outsiders. Approaching the Real: Cinema and Realism Film Course

SUNDAYS 16 SEP - 21 OCT @ 7PM

Within French film critic Andre Bazin’s essential study What is Cinema? he describes how the cinema’s most important function is its capacity to accurately reproduce the world around us. We have all experienced the power of the movies in this regard, all sat in a crowded cinema and been so immersed in this reality that we, even just for a moment, forget ourselves and connect completely with the struggles, joys and drama of lives lived on-screen. The cinema creates a powerful illusion of reality and Bazin was correct to highlight this as a defining characteristic. This six week course delivered by film scholar Daniel Fitzpatrick will look at various ways of approaching realism through cinema. It will consider important and essential films by some of the greatest filmmakers the cinema has produced, each with their own distinctively effective approach to reproducing reality. The course will begin with an illustrated lecture, including short extracts drawn from many areas of film history and outlining the major debates and contributions to any discussion of realism and the cinema and each of the films screened as part of this course will be preceded by an introduction and Q&A. Rosetta, Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne (1999) The Apple, Samira Makhmalbaf (1998) A Man Escaped, Robert Bresson (1956) A Woman Under the Influence, John Cassavetes (1974) The Mirror Andrei Tarkovsky (1975) €50 for course

Mermaid Live CD Launch Concert

SAT 22 SEP 8pm

Over the years, 10 years to precise, Mermaid has seen some of the finest music on offer on both the national and international stage, so when it came to choosing what should go on the Mermaid Live album we found ourselves in something of a tricky situation. As we are the County Wicklow Arts Centre we eventually decided to start with artists who, one way or another, have a local connection. And even at that we still had lots of great gigs to choose from! So we’ve whittled it down to what we believe to be some of the most stunning musical performances to take place in the venue. Join many of those performers who are included in the Mermaid compilation CD for this special CD launch in celebration of 10 Years of Live Music at Mermaid. Performers on the night will include: Francesco Turrisi’s Tarab, Mermaid’s Ensemble in Residence in 2010 Roger Doyle and Niwel Tsumbu, Musicians in Residence in 2011 Cellist Vyvienne Long Classical guitarist Redmond O’Toole Jazz guitarist Mike Nielsen Whistler player Cormac Breathnach Aoife and Joe Doyle of Harmonic Sound Sean Carpio and Dan Bodwell Mermaid Live is a CD of live recordings from Mermaid’s archives recorded by Eoin Murphy of Big Garden Recording. The Source

MON 24 SEP @ 8pm

Romanian-born filmmaker Radu Mihaileanu offers up another certifiably crowd-pleasing slice of world cinema in The Source, a modern-day fable exploring female empowerment in the Arab world. Set in the remote village of Maghreb, the long-suffering women toil away whilst the men folk claim their patriarchal right to lounge around drinking tea and playing cards. Young wife Leila, an outsider from the more easygoing south, is concerned by the number of accidents occurring on the steep mountain path the femmes tread each day to fetch water. Supported by her feisty widowed neighbour and free-thinking schoolteacher husband Sami, Leila proposes the women launch a love strike: no more cuddling and no more sex until the men bring running water to the village. From Bray with Love

FRI 8 JUNE – THU 13 SEPTEMBER 10am - 6pm (Later on performance nights)

A focal point of the Arcadia Festival which took place in June, From Bray with Love is a curated exhibition which takes a closer look at Bray’s international standing as one of the major holiday destinations in Ireland. With the extension of the railway to Bray in 1854, Bray took off as a popular holiday resort, particularly with day-trippers from Dublin, and became the largest Irish seaside resort at the time. From Bray with Love features photographs documenting Bray’s success and travel posters designed to entice tourists to Bray and county Wicklow and highlighting the merit that Bray was given as a holiday resort, with the town standing tall alongside Killarney and Connemara as a must-see place to visit when in Ireland. The exhibition also includes an important collection of postcards sent from Bray by holiday-makers, featuring for example sightseers walking the promenade, the cable car built in the 1950s which brought visitors halfway up Bray Head, and an array of prominent hotels and boarding houses. With the assistance and expertise of local historians and collectors, and partners such as An Post, the National Library and the IFI, From Bray with Love will give everyone an opportunity to recall the ‘good old days’ and to perhaps rekindle some of that passion for ‘Beautiful Bray’. This exhibition is accompanied by an extensive programme of events.
