WELCOME I’m still aglow after the referendum. I confess I’m pleased with the result but what really impressed me was how many people got involved and voted. Participation of citizens in political decision making is a core concept of a functioning democracy. A true democratic society emphasizes the values of liberty, equality and justice. I’m also very respectful of those who did not vote yes. It’s an important part of democratic theory that while we promote the rule of majority, we must also protect minority rights and maintain readiness to compromise. A true democracy recognises everyone’s worth and dignity. Mermaid Arts Centre is not a place for one type of person or one type of voice. We are not just a centre of art, we are a centre of community and we value every citizen. In our coming season we’ve specifically selected work to represent the complexity of our society and citizens as well as choosing to present classical work and long term favourites. We aim to ensure that our programme has something for everyone. We have a jam packed Autumn with some real gems across disciplines. In the light of recent results, I highly recommend three of our forthcoming shows. For total belly laughs and charming honesty see How to Keep an Alien by Sonya Kelly and Rough Magic Theatre Company. HotForTheatre and Galway International Arts Festival’s Luck Just Kissed You Hello by Amy Conroy is equally funny with truly moving observations and dialogue. We have also chosen to present more classical work and I urge you to see Conor McPherson’s The Night Alive by The Lyric Theatre before it premieres in the Dublin Theatre Festival. Never seen in Ireland before, this show received the highest accolade at New York Drama Circle Critic’s Awards and I promise it is a thumping good story, it really is a romp! Please come visit us.Take a risk, come to something you may not usually see.Trust us, we are selecting and supporting work we value, work we think is important, work we believe might challenge some, but also, it will inspire more than the majority. MERMAID SPACE ///ARTISTS’ RESIdEnCIES Our artist residencies and supports are a way for us to ensure we keep artists at our heart. Keeping artists at our core, helps keep us relevant. We have great news, our Dance Artists Nick Bryson, Karen Gleeson and Aisling O’Coineen have again received support from the Arts Council and Wicklow County Council Arts Office to work as Dance Artists in Residence for another year – we’re delighted. THEATREclub’s Grace Dyas, Gemma Collins and Lauren Larkin who worked for two weeks in July to make a new work The Game have been selected to present in Dublin Theatre Festival 2015. Gemma Gallagher, Shadowbox Theatre Company, has also worked over the summer with the incredible Veronica Coburn on the development of a new work and in September will host another ten week programme of Visual Theatre Workshop (see page 14) for artists with disabilities. We are also supporting the development and presentation of an exciting new production Temptress by Wicklow writer Philip St John (see page 25).
Mermaid has also been working behind the scenes with a group of eight visual artists from Wicklow; Joanne Boyle, Raine Hozier Byrne, Rachel Fallon, Emma Finucane, Laura Kelly, Joanna Kidney, Eleanor Phillips and Ann Marie Webb. The artists approached Mermaid with the ongoing issue of struggling to find affordable space within their own locality. We’ve helped to find and negotiate a space and they have established their own new independent artist led studio in Bray called OUTPOST STUDIOS.The studios will officially launch on 5 September and their ethos is one of community, sustainability and inclusivity. We wish them every success in their new home. And finally, in November, Mermaid Arts Centre and Creative Producer Lian Bell will run a pilot programme called Gap Day.With the help of a Theatre Development Award from the Arts Council, the programme will support freelance theatre artists to germinate new ideas, and will be available to professional directors, devisers, writers, designers and creative producers. We’ll have an open call in November, so sign up to our mailing list (via our website) if you are not already on it and keep an eye on your inbox. The exciting thing about Gap Day is that it is a chance for freelance artists to buy time for creative thinking. Even though the pilot programme will initially be a small try-out, it is a meaningful offer of care for an artist’s creative wellbeing. It is what an arts centre like Mermaid is all about.

THINKING VISUAL Thinking Visual is an initiative of Wicklow County Council Arts Office, managed by Mermaid, supported by The Arts Council, where secondary school students experience contemporary visual art by meeting and working directly with professional artists. Our aim is to spark a true curiosity and understanding of contemporary culture, encouraging a lifelong interest not only as consumers of culture but also as makers of art. In 2014 and 2015 Thinking Visual is curated by Jennie Guy and this year she is working with two Wicklow schools. We’re delighted to return to Blessington Community College where we will work with art teacher and artist Turlough O’Donnell and his transition year students. Jennie will also work in Scoil Chonglais, Baltinglass with art teacher Anne Deeney Walker, English teacher Thomas Ahern, and their students. In Blessington, artist Sarah Pierce will use Bertolt Brecht’s experimental plays without an audience as a starting point for developing a new work with the students, while Elaine Leader will use her own work as a framework within which the students will explore themes related to the built environment, manipulation and control. In Baltinglass, John Beattie, Sven Anderson, and Michael West will work with film, sound, and writing to explore the surrealist process of the exquisite corpse – the students will create fragments of imagery, texture, and narrative in which they’ll explore collective authorship, learning about the collaborative and at times unpredictable nature of many contemporary creative processes.

MERMAID GALLERY The sea,the sea Ruth E. Lyons There is a geological seam of salt deep in the earth that stretches from Ireland to Russia, it is the remains of the Zechstein Sea, a body of water that became landlocked around two hundred and thirty million years ago. Somewhere in outer space Astronomers have detected the largest body of water in the universe whose volume is enough to fill the earth’s oceans more than one hundred trillion times. With works in sculpture, film and photography The Sea,The Sea, is a meditation on the ordinary world of little things in a vast and unfathomable universe. Ruth E. Lyons is a visual artist based in Offaly where she cofounded and co-directs an artist studio called The Good Hatchery. Since graduating from NCAD in 2007, Ruth has been interested and concerned with landscape and how the landscape of Ireland has been altered by industry, in particular the industries of mining and energy production. In this exhibition she will present a selection of works old and new, Amphibious Sound Sound, Learning to Swim with the ESB, Afterings and Storm Glass which will engage the viewer in thoughts, proposals and propositions around water, its use, mis-use and its influence and contribution to life on an island.

MERMAID GALLERY Between the Woods and the Water Elisabeth S Clark and Adrian Williams Curated by David Upton “While still a student, I first came across the work of Adrian and Elisabeth at the Terminal Convention in Cork Airport in 2011. Both Adrian and Elisabeth’s practices create poetic narratives from every day experiences and objects giving them a quality that clings to the memory allowing their work to spill over the bounds of the gallery, to be activated and enjoyed again by the day to day act of living. Between the Woods and the Water explores these traces and fragments that remain in the memory and their capacity to affect a whole landscape or thought process.” –David Upton, Curator in Residence In Adrian Williams’ conceptually narrative work, explorations of spaces both literal and fictional are presented as performance, intervention, and film in a form of expanded writing. Originally from Portland, Oregon, she lives and works in Frankfurt. Elisabeth S Clark’s art practice explores the topography of language, of time, of sound and thought.Through a slightness of touch, Clark carefully interweaves what is already ‘there’, to accentuate, isolate and question the ephemeral, integral and changing qualities of ‘being’.
Opening FRI 18 September at 6pm | Exhibition runs SAT 19 September – SAT 31 October | 10am – 6pm Supported by an Arts Council of Ireland Curator in Residence Award and Wicklow County Council Arts Office 7

Industrial Yarns The Story of Bray’s Factories by Phillip Byrne When people think of Bray’s history it’s usually as a Victorian seaside resort. For generations of people from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, Bray was associated with the sea and summer holidays. Indeed since the mid-19th century that’s what it was, the premier resort for people to ‘take the sea air’. It was a town of sand castles, fish ‘n chips and candy floss. However while all this merriment was taking place, Bray was an industrial town for many of its residents. Bray people lived, loved and worked as employees of the many factories in the area. Industrial Yarns – The Story of Bray’s Factories tells the story not only of these factories but more importantly the story of the people who worked in them – Solus, Industrial Yarns, Haughtons, Kennymore Sweets, Fiacla, Miller’s Coffin Makers, Braycott Biscuits, Koss and quite a few more. The exhibition concentrates on the oral history of these factories as told by the people themselves. Hear about the ghost of Corke Abbey, the savings clubs, the working conditions and above all the craic that people had while working often in very difficult conditions. They say that we see our past through rose tinted glasses. So what! This is an exhibition about the people who lived and worked in Bray during the 50s, 60s and 70s. All traces of many factories have long since disappeared but their memory lives on through the exhibition and the words, images and memorabilia of that generation who were ‘pure Bray’. Industrial Yarns is kindly supported by The Heritage Council. Opening THU 12 November at 6pm | Exhibition runs FRI 13 – SUN 22 November | 10am – 6pm FREE / Part of YARN Storytelling Festival Bray 8
MERMAID GALLERY Works by Nature and Man Dominic Stevens “There are almost no landscapes in Europe that are purely natural, all are the result of a relationship between the land and people, their daily labours, rituals and beliefs.Wicklow is no exception.Wicklow is a creation of the ideas and the industry of man. The people of Wicklow are not a homogeneous group, they are made up of many people with different and often contrasting views, needs and priorities and this creates a complex web of differing attitudes, ambitions and desires. I am interested in the places that these attitudes meet the land.” –Dominic Stevens In this exhibition, architect Dominic Stevens will explore aspects of rurality on the one hand and the picturesque on the other as it pertains to the landscape of Wicklow. He will use theories concerning the working land, cultural landscapes, the sublime and attitudes and ideas gleaned from a process of conversations with different communities of Wicklow. Dominic encourages us to think and to question and his ambition is to work to challenge paradigms and provoke agency and social change.

This is a unique opportunity for Wicklow audiences to get a chance to see Conor McPherson’s latest work in Mermaid Arts Centre before the production moves to the Gaiety Theatre. The Lyric Theatre (and Dublin Theatre Festival) are proud to premiere this new production of The Night Alive, directed by the author and starring Adrian Dunbar, Frank Grimes, Laurence Kinlan, Ian Lloyd-Anderson and Kate Stanley Brennan. Set in Dublin, The Night Alive tells the story of Tommy, a middle-aged man just about getting by, who one night comes to the aid of Aimee. Aimee has not had it easy herself, struggling through life the only way she knows how.Together, there’s a glimmer of hope that they could make something more of their lives. Something extraordinary. Perhaps. “The beauty of McPherson’s writing is that peripheral, shimmery weirdness, the tug at your sleeve of something so otherworldly and luminous, you can’t bear to turn around and look. What’s going on? A spellbinding and absolutely gorgeous new play by one of the true poets of the theatre, that’s what.” –David Cote Time Out, New York

14 – 22 November 2015 We’re often told we have the gift of the gab here in Ireland, but what does that actually mean? We are known throughout the world for the art of storytelling, for our ability to talk readily, glibly, and convincingly. Stories, seancaithe and scéalaí have been shared by the tradition bearers and storytellers from generation to generation. These stories won’t be found in books, but in the minds of the story tellers. There is no set script, a story will be recreated each time it is heard. A story is recreated not only by the storyteller, but also by the listener. Presented by Mermaid Arts Centre,YARN brings together our community from Bray and beyond to share and hear stories in school rooms, seaside hotels, beside many a fire, along the cliff walk, on farms and of course at Mermaid Arts Centre. Listen to stories from the grave, from the sea or from the woods. Be spooked by tales of holy wells, giants, ghosts and ogres. Hear a story through yoga, dance, song, or as gaeilge. Why not perfect your own gab and join us on our open mic night? Let a story weave its magic on you at YARN Storytelling Festival Bray.YARN Storytelling Festival Bray is now in its sixth year and takes place from Friday 15 to Sunday 24 November. The following pages detail some of the public events planned for this year, pick up a YARN festival programme in November for full event information or keep an eye on our website. www.mermaidartscentre.ie

MIA MADRE Margherita, a director in the middle of filming, has to deal with the inevitable and still unacceptable loss of her mother.Throughout most of the film, Margherita seems on the edge of losing it. Occasionally, she does, while her mother, hospitalised, remains calm and humorous.Yet, in a brilliant move, the structure of the film gives balance to the heavy subject. The scenes of grief are balanced with the fictional film set, where actor Barry with his wide infectious grin and playful antics steals the show. Director Nanni Moretti draws on personal experience to bring us this, at times, hilarious film.
