Record-Breakers
Fastest: The Ornithomimids
Extraordinary Dinosaurs
We’re living in a golden age of dinosaur discovery. Paleontologists find a new species an average of once a week! More than 700 dinosaur species have been discovered so far, and experts know that this is just a small fraction of all dinosaurs that ever existed. But of them all, which species stand out?
Fossils can’t show speed. But scientists can use
Struthiomimus
Biggest: Argentinosaurus
The title for biggest dinosaur is always changing as new, ever more enormous fossils are unearthed. But surely one of the largest land animals ever to shake the Mesozoic was Argentinosaurus. Though they have found only a few bones, scientists estimate this titanosaur could have measured as long as a 737 airplane and been heavier than 20 hippos! Despite its massive size, this giant didn’t move quickly. It only had a gait, or pace, of about five miles an hour (7kph).
cursorial kur-SOR-ee-uhl (adjective) adapted to run fast and/ or for long distances
DENTAL BATTERY
DEN-tuhl-BAT-uh-ree (noun) rows of teeth tightly packed together to form a surface for grinding food 32
5
Smallest: Microraptor
A few species compete for the title of tiniest dinosaur. One of the smallest of them all was Microraptor, weighing about two pounds (0.9kg) and measuring only a foot (31cm) tall. Microraptor had feathers on both its front and hind legs, and a cluster on the end of its tail. But it didn’t fly. Instead, it would leap from the tops of trees and spread out its limbs wide to glide, like a flying squirrel. Scientists think the feathers of Microraptor were iridescent (ih-ruh-DEH-suhnt), like those of a peacock.
what they know about the anatomy of fast-
moving animals alive today to estimate how speedy ancient species might have been. Some of the fastest dinosaurs ever were the Ornithomimids. With their long legs, long necks, and small heads, they looked similar to ostriches. Ornithomimids were cursorial animals, meaning they had bodies adapted for running. They might have been able to reach speeds of up to 50 miles an hour (80kph)—as fast as a sprinting lion.
Smartest: Troodon
There’s no way to give an extinct animal an intelligence test. But when judging smarts, scientists often look to how big a creature’s brain is compared to its body size, also called its brain-to-body ratio. (Humans, chimpanzees, and dolphins have some of the largest brain-to-body ratios of all living animals.) By that measure, Troodon may have been one of the smartest dinosaurs of all. Its big brain powered keen hearing, eyesight, and smell, which this hunter used to sneak up on prey. Troodon were also protective parents, with the males in charge of brooding the eggs.
Toothiest: Nigersaurus
A large dinosaur with hundreds of teeth might sound terrifying. But Nigersaurus was an herbivore nicknamed the “Mesozoic cow.” This dinosaur had an odd-shaped face with a wide, flat mouth that some scientists have compared to a vacuum cleaner. Nigersaurus had what’s called a dental battery: multiple rows of teeth tightly packed together to form a surface for grinding food. The top and bottom of this dinosaur’s mouth each held a row of about 50 flat-edged teeth. But underneath were about 500 more teeth waiting in the wings. As the front teeth wore out, new ones would move in to take their place. Scientists think Nigersaurus may have needed to replace each tooth after just two weeks. That’s a lot of chewing!
