Faculty Reflections David MacLaren, Associate Professor of Biology

B.A., University of Maine at Farmington; Ph.D., Indiana University What’s your favorite class to teach? Animal Behavior—we spend time studying whale behavior and ecology on whale watch boats in the Gulf of Maine. Are you conducting research? I mentor approximately 5–7 students per year and investigate whale behavior, ecology and conservation in partnership with the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation. What is a typical class of yours like? I love the subject matter I teach and try hard to pass that enthusiasm on to my students. I strive to establish a very relaxed, unintimidating classroom environment so students feel comfortable asking questions and making comments. What is your one piece of advice for new students? Ask for help when you struggle. It’s not a sign of weakness, but an indication that you take your education seriously and are committed to academic success. What’s your passion? Studying and teaching ecology, evolution, and animal behavior.

Mark Allman, Professor & Chair of Religious and Theological Studies B.A., SUNY Albany; Ph.D., Loyola University of Chicago What’s your favorite class to teach? War & Peace—the class is always new and relevant to the world in which we live. Are you conducting any research? I am currently researching pirates and piracy for a new course on the history of piracy in the Caribbean up to modern times including internet and corporate piracy, human trafficking, and ocean piracy.

Laura Hsu, Assistant Professor

What is a typical class of yours like? My classes are usually fast-paced, filled with debates, laughing, and arguing. I like to explore issues that don’t have easy answers because students then take ownership of their own learning.

B.A., University of California, Berkeley; Ed.M. and Ed.D., Harvard Graduate School of Education

What is your one piece of advice for new students? Join something—anything— during your first two weeks of college. Studies show that students who join clubs, play sports, and volunteer tend to be happier and get better grades. What’s your passion? Justice. I yearn for a world where justice becomes the standard by which we judge what is valuable, worthwhile, and deserving of our attention.

Jane Parent, Associate Professor of Management B.S., State University of New York-Albany; M.B.A., University of Southern Maine; Ph.D., University of Massachusetts Amherst What’s your favorite class to teach? Organizational Behavior—students gain an understanding of their personal leadership qualities and how they apply to everyday business situations. Are you conducting any research? I am working with students and a psychology professor on how new material may be processed more deeply and more coherently when students find a meaningful connection to their learning. What is a typical class of yours like? My classes are very interactive with lots of “learn by doing” experiential exercises and projects. I aim to create a community of learning through discussion and dialogue during classes—this way, students learn from each other. What is your one piece of advice for new students? Your syllabus is your road map for each of your classes. Refer to this important document often! What’s your passion? Teaching my students that hard work will bring them success in everything they do.

of Human Development

What’s your favorite class to teach? Child & Adolescent Development—I love introducing students to theories, research, and practices that I hope will inspire and influence them to become better teachers, as they did for me. Are you conducting any research? Human development students are assisting me with a research project examining whether using one’s hands differently leads to changes in cognitive functioning among older adults. What is a typical class of yours like? I encourage curiosity, emphasize effort over ability, and ask students to make connections between what they are learning and their personal lives so that the information is more memorable and meaningful. What is your one piece of advice for new students? This is the time to truly figure out who you are and who you would like to become. Explore, experiment, get involved in the community, take advantage of experiential learning opportunities, and most of all, have fun! What’s your passion? Empowering others through education. 10

Did you know? Frisbee competitions, intramural soccer games, and barbecues in the quad—our beautiful 220-acre campus buzzes with fun activities, all year long.

From helping you find co-ops and internships to landing your dream job, our counselors provide you with the preparation you need to effectively pursue the career you want. As evidence of these efforts, 98% of Merrimack College graduates are working full-time jobs or are pursuing their master’s degree within nine months of graduation—and many leave campus with a job in hand. THE NECESSARY EXPERIENCE.

The majority of students in last year’s graduating class participated in at least one internship or undergraduate research opportunity while at Merrimack. In fact, our cooperative education and internship programs are among the finest in the country.
