Genealogy Workshop – Basic Level Session one – Introduction to Genealogy The purpose of this session is to introduce participants to the study of family history. Participants will become familiar with basic concepts of research including identifying and locating sources, categories of sources for family history, collating information and using oral history in genealogy. The workshop is designed to give participants a systematic approach to researching their family history. Contents Introduction Approaching your family history – the first steps Practical skills for genealogy Locating sources – a guide to the key repositories for family history Sources for family history - Civil Records - Parish Records - The Census - Land Records - Probate Records - Miscellaneous Sources

Session two – How to navigate online sources for Genealogy Research The purpose of this session is to introduce participants to the Internet sources directed at family history. You will become familiar with basic concepts of online searching, source retrieval, and how to download material from Genealogy online sources. The next phase of the practical hands on workshop shows participants how to use document logs, how to keep records and Family Tree construction. The final part of the workshop examines available computer packages for genealogy research.
