Damian Wyard STOTT PILATES® Certified Instructor, MSc PT Founder, Pilates4Physio, Toronto

Why Damian Wyard chose STOTT PILATES for Rehab While working at a national physiotherapy chain, Damian saw patients repeatedly being given the same standard exercises on the same machines by support personnel with very limited knowledge of the exercise. He noticed that patients were struggling with basic home programs and were not getting better. Unhappy with the quality of rehab treatment being offered, Damian decided it was time to do something different. He became a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor, adding to his more than 20 years of experience as a physiotherapist, massage therapist and clinical director. In 2016, Damian opened Pilates4Physio in Toronto, where he provides customized one-on-one rehabilitation instruction using the science of physiotherapy with the gradual progression approach of Pilates. Adding Pilates to his practice has allowed him to become more creative with his patients, Damian

says, and he is less constrained in treatment options. “The integration of Pilates and rehab is really an art as much as a science,” he says. “You have to be able to adapt to what the patient needs that day, or during that period in time.”

Damian’s STOTT PILATES Rehab Education: • Spinal, Pelvic & Scapular Stabilization: Matwork (RM1) • Peripheral Joint Stabilization: Matwork (RM2) • Spinal, Pelvic & Scapular Stabilization: Reformer (RR1) • Peripheral Joint Stabilization: Reformer (RR2) • Spinal, Pelvic & Scapular Stabilization: Cadillac, Chair & Barrels (RCCB1) • Peripheral Joint Stabilization: Cadillac, Chair & Barrels (RCCB2)

PiTZ – Pilates Training Zone How two physical therapists built a successful clinic for rehab and wellness Since 2011, Estela and Maria have provided clients with a differentiated service in the evaluation and treatment of movement disorders— one that combines physical therapy and Pilates. They cater to a wide range of clients, from those recovering from injuries and surgeries to elite athletes, and those looking to stay active and healthy. “Pilates has changed a great deal in the last five years and it’s becoming increasingly popular in Portugal,” Estela says, adding that clients have quickly come to embrace the idea that Pilates and physical therapy work well together. “All sorts of clients are now looking for more preventative exercises that correct their posture and support a healthy lifestyle as they age,” she says. The STOTT PILATES® method has helped them choose and modify exercises for clients based on

their medical conditions. “And it’s helped us explain it in a way that’s relatable to them,” she says. The studio has grown so much that in 2016 it had to relocate to a larger facility. It now offers more than 80 lessons a week in a range of programs, such as Pilates, Pilates for Kids, Total Barre®, Rehab and Pre- and Post-Natal. “One of the main reasons clients come to us and want to work with us is because of our health and medical backgrounds,” Estela says. “People are beginning to see physical therapy as being more than manual therapy— it’s rehabilitation through movement. Now, we have a number of doctors from various specialties who recommend their clients to us after a surgery for rehabilitation.”

Sara Baker Merrithew™ Instructor Trainer, Rehab STOTT PILATES® Certified Instructor PT, MS, OCS Founder, Inspire Health, Atlanta Merrithew Licensed Training Center

Launch your Pilates business How Sara Baker grew her cash-based physical therapy practice Sara’s ultimate goal was to use Pilates along with traditional physical therapy to serve her clients across the full spectrum from rehab to wellness, fitness and prevention. In 2005, after becoming a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor, she realized her goal and opened Inspire Health, a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where health care professionals and fitness professionals work under one roof to serve their clients’ needs. She later became a STOTT PILATES Rehab Instructor Trainer and partnered with Merrithew to make Inspire Health a Licensed Training Center, allowing her to teach and host programming for health care professionals on integrating STOTT PILATES into their rehab practices.

Her clinic has since grown to a staff of 20, including four physical therapists and 11 Pilates professionals trained in the STOTT PILATES method. The clinic hosts between five and eight Pilates classes a day. The clinic’s medical staff are also encouraged to take STOTT PILATES training. Sara built up her brand through word-of-mouth referrals and by forming relationships in the medical community, approaching doctors to present her cash-based clinic as an option for patients. Inspire Health has more than 1,000 client visits a month. “Merrithew helped me further my goals and dreams,” she says. “It’s a one-stop shop for education and equipment.”
