OPIOID ABUSE

FLYING HIGH AT PROVINCIALS Fentanyl found in Merritt bust Tim Petruk KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

A Kamloops judge declined to consider the presence of fentanyl an aggravating factor in handing down B.C.’s first sentence for trafficking the highly potent and potentially deadly synthetic opioid on Monday, saying it’s up to Canadian lawmakers to dictate how the drug should be handled by courts. Matthew Hickson was handed a 28-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking — one for cocaine, the other for fentanyl. The Crown had been seeking a four-year prison sentence, citing lengthy terms of incarceration doled out for fentanyl dealers in Ontario and entering into evidence reports about the serious and sometimes deadly implications of fentanyl use. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Hope Hyslop said cocaine and fentanyl, both considered Schedule 1 controlled substances under Canadian law, should be treated the same in court. “Until Parliament legislates otherwise, I will make no distinction in sentencing Mr. Hickson,” she said. Hyslop did, however, acknowledge the seriousness of fentanyl. “The danger with fentanyl lies with the potency and possible overdose risk,” she said. “Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Drug overdose deaths in British Columbia have been increasing.” In April, B.C.’s chief medical health officer declared a medical state of emergency due to the skyrocketing number of overdose deaths in the province, the majority as a result of fentanyl use. But, Hyslop said, there was no evidence Hickson knew he was carrying fentanyl when he

Court heard the 32-year-old was under police surveillance on Nov. 5, 2014, when he was pulled over en route to Kamloops from the Lower Mainland. With over 3,000 people in attendance at the festival, Merritt RCMP said the Bass Coast event was well managed in terms of keeping everybody safe. Michael Potestio/Herald Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

A few visits to the grounds was the extent of the interaction Merritt RCMP had with the Bass Coast music festival over the weekend. While there were no drug overdoses, police had to deal with a couple of incidents on Saturday where people were acting hysterically after having used drugs at the festival. RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore said that police were called to assist event security who were dealing with a man who said he was going to kill himself. The man was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when apprehended by police, but said he had taken acid the night before. She said the man was admitted to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops under the mental health act. Later that night, police responded to the site where medical and security staff said a woman had been acting erratically due to drug consumption. Dunsmore said she was taken to the Nicola Valley Hospital to calm down and was later released. Dunsmore told the Herald that t the only concern police had h prior to this year’s festival was the possibility of t drug overdoses given the fact d they responded to about two t or o three at the site last year. Police also had three noise complaints from resin dents who heard the music d overnight, and responded to o a fight at the site in which neither of the two people n involved wished to press i charges. c She said one of the festival’s v security guards was hit by b a trailer as vehicles were exiting the grounds, but e was w taken to hospital and is i expected to make a full recovery. r “We don’t have a lot of problems with it,” Dunsmore p said s of the festival.

VIEWPOINT EDITORIAL

South Sudan not Africa This is not an article on South Sudan, which is just as well because the conflicts GWYNNE DYER there are almost frac- The international STAGE tal in their complexity. The miniwar last weekend between the forces of President Salva Kiir and VicePresident Riek Machar, which killed more than 270 people and saw tanks, artillery and helicopter gunships used in the capital, Juba, is part of a pattern that embraces the whole country. The four days of heavy fighting began on July 8, with a disagreement between the two men’s large forces of bodyguards outside State House where they were meeting, and rapidly escalated to an all-out clash between all of Kiir’s and Machar’s troops in the capital. Nobody was surprised, because the peace deal last August, which ended a two-year civil war that killed tens of thousands across the country, was never very secure. After a shaky ceasefire was agreed, President Kiir said: “Making South Sudan glorious will only happen if we see ourselves as South Sudanese first rather than tribal or political groupings,” which is the sort of thing that leaders are obliged to say after a pointless clash like this. It’s true, too, but in South Sudan it is very hard to do. Last weekend was the fifth anniversary of South Sudan’s independence from Sudan, but celebrations had already been cancelled before the shooting started because the government couldn’t afford them. The country has some oil but virtually no other exports, and was hard-hit by last year’s collapse in the oil price.

Gun control a crock, let police do their job It has become a common scenario to target firearm owners after a mass shooting and it is no different with the recent shooting at a gay bar in Orlando. Mainstream media OTHMAR VOHRINGER and politicians fall The over themselves pro- OUTDOORSMAN moting the urgency of more gun control laws, using buzz words like “gun violence,” “assault rifles,” “AR-15” and “semi-automatic weapons.” The latter three phrases are often used interchangeably to create the illusion that are all the same. This strategy works well to scare a largely ignorant population into thinking that drastic measures are needed to prevent people from getting murdered with firearms. Of course there is no such thing as “gun violence.” Firearms are not violent, people can — and often are — violent and they use whatever means they have to commit murder or harm. If you look up the FBI statistics about murder rates by weapon type it turns out that a large number of homicides are not carried out with firearms but with an array of other weapons too. The knife, for example, ranks the high-

est after firearms. Next are blunt instruments (baseball bat, crowbar and such). Yet, nobody in their right mind would use the phrase “knife violence” or “baseball violence.” The simple truth is that stricter firearm laws do not lower violence. Here in Canada we had a very strict gun control law for over ten years: the $2 billion firearms registry. When the conservative government finally abolished it there was a big outcry with fears fueled by the media that now “gun crime” would rise. Statistics show that this has not happened. The crime rate involving guns did not rise in fact it went down. Even the RCMP, in charge of gun control and enforcing the law, had to admit that not a single registered firearm, of the millions of guns on the registry or their owners, was involved in any firearm related criminal activity. England, next to Germany, has the most restrictive firearms control laws in Europe, they even banned carrying a knife, and yet the man who murdered British MP Jo Cox last month did so with a firearm and a knife. In China civilians can’t own any firearms whatsoever, even the police officers must store their firearms at the police station at the end of their shift, yet China experiences a relatively high number of violent crimes involving firearms. If stricter laws don’t work to reduce violent crimes then what is the problem? The system is

the problem! In several interviews Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, points out that the system is broken, more specifically the information exchange between law-enforcement agencies. For example, in the case of the Orlando shooting the FBI knew for the two years that Mateen was a radicalized individual and put him on a “no-fly” list. However, according to Sherriff Clake and others, the FBI did not pass that information on to other lawenforcement agencies in the country. Neglecting to pass information on made it possible that Mateen could legally purchase a firearm. The firearm store owner checked Mateen’s name — and it came up clean. We don’t need more laws; we need to fix the broken information system, enforce the laws we have and enforce them to the fullest extent instead of making up the usual excuses for criminals. Above all, let law enforcement do their work uninterrupted by politically correct agendas. With issues like gun control I am always reminded of a line I read a few years ago “For every problem there are hundreds of people chopping away at the leaves and branches, but nobody tackles the root of the problem.” Othmar Vohringer lives in the Nicola Valley. He is an animal behaviourist and outdoor writer.

Editor; The column in the June 30 edition of the Merritt Herald entitled God in Government by Narayan Mitra is timely for me and I would say it contains information of great value for all Canadians. It speaks of our national anthem. Recently I had been thinking about our anthem, for instance, “With glowing hearts we see thee rise.” Wow. We have indeed seen Canada rise in science, medicine, sports, peacekeeping, acceptance and kindness for immigrants, and in many other areas. It is dismaying, however, to see Canada turning away from the values and principles that this nation was founded on. Principles of justice and truth, the everlasting principles that work. As Mitra said in his column, Psalm 72:8 is inscribed in the entryway to our national Parliament: “He shall have dominion from sea to sea” — and the entire Psalm shows what God would desire for His people. The Holy Bible is a story of a people, in whom God had seen promise, to reveal His true ways in the earth, (e.g., Abraham and his descendants). In its pages it shows over and over how, when the people gave Him His true place in their lives and country, peace and prosperity reigned. When they deviated from that, they fell into dreadful troubles. But as Mitra also said, “The good news is that He still hears the humble prayers of His people.” When nations turned back to Him with their whole hearts He healed their lands. This is a simple overview of course, but history bears it out again and again. Christ exemplified the law of love supreme. As God’s ways do not change, real love has to be beaded on real truth. The boundaries in our true foundation are there to protect us from lawlessness and chaos, and to promote a peaceful, thriving society.

It’s not enough. Our government needs to do much more to ensure that rural communities have the services they need. While I empathize with the situation in Princeton, Merritt is facing a far graver situation. With a city population of about 8,000 and an area population of 16,000 our doctor to patient ratio is 1:2,000 at best, and 1: 4,000 at worst (and more realistically). In the meantime all community members are feeling the effects of the physician shortage; even those patients who have a family doctor. Patients are over-loading the ER with non-emergent or chronic illnesses. Some patients are waiting too long to seek medical help so that when they do arrive at the hospital, their health is in need of emergency care. We live in one of the most beautiful provinces in Canada with many recreational opportunities. The southern interior is near large urban areas. The location should be very desirable. Clearly, it isn’t location that is preventing doctors for setting up their practices here. Perhaps the drawbacks exceed the benefits and the incentives offered are not enough. I am of the opinion that more needs to be done. The situation is critical. — posted by “Rose Balan” on July 12

Sudan has suffered endless war From Page 6 The real reason for its poverty, however, is war: the country that is now South Sudan has been at war for 42 of the past 60 years. British colonialists included it in what we now call Sudan for administrative convenience, but the dominant population in the much bigger northern part was Muslim and Arabic-speaking, while the south was mostly Christian and culturally, ethnically and linguistically African. The fighting began a year before Sudan’s independence in 1956, with the southerners resisting the Sudanese government’s attempts to Islamise and Arabise their part of the new country. That civil war lasted until 1971, and the second (19832005) was even longer. By the time South Sudan finally won its independence in 2011, it had long been a fully militarised society. It didn’t take long after independence before the two biggest ethnic groups, the Dinka (led by President Salva Kiir) and the Nuer (led by Vice-

President Riek Machar) were at each other’s throats. Those are just two of South Sudan’s sixty ethnic groups, each with its own language, culture and territory — and even within the two big ethnic groups, different sub-groups sometimes find themselves on opposite sides of the fighting. One-fifth of South Sudan’s 12 million people are currently refugees within their country — the lucky ones in United Nations camps, but many are hiding in swamps and badlands from local ethnic militias. Kiir and Machar are both brutal, untrustworthy men, and neither is fully in control of his own generals. And the outside organisations that have poured foreign aid and peacekeeping troops into the country are losing patience. The current ceasefire may not last: seven others were broken during the course of the recent civil war. South Sudan is unlikely to achieve a lasting peace settlement any time soon. But South Sudan is not representative of sub-Saharan Africa. Out of 48 countries south of the Sahara, only Somalia, Burundi, and South Sudan are currently suffering from large-scale internal violence.

?

HERALD QUESTION OF THE WEEK

A dozen others have experienced similar upheavals at some point in the past fifteen years: sub-Saharan Africa is unique in the extravagant diversity of its population, with two hundred ethnic groups of more than half a million people and only three with over 15 million people. But mostly they manage to co-exist fairly peacefully, and over time broader national identities are being built over the post-colonial wreckage. The image of a continent ravaged by war is an optical illusion perpetuated by the international media’s fixation with violence. For example, during most of 2014-15 the headline news coming out of Europe, as far as the rest of the world was concerned, was the war in Ukraine — although all of the continent’s other fifty countries were at peace. South Sudan is desperately unfortunate in its history and its leaders, but it is no more typical of Africa than Ukraine is of Europe. FAITH

Seeking spiritual sanity and quiet worship Quite a few hymns of the Christian faith have originated from real life situations or because of special occasions. The hymn, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, is no exception. The writer, John Greenleaf Whittier, a Quaker, was reared NARAYAN MITRA in an environment where his You Gotta Have family was given to meditative FAITH silence. An obnoxious and noisy ‘revival’ service is said to have moved Whittier to write said poem wherein he paints the finest picture of true worship in five stanzas. It begins with “Dear Lord and Father of mankind/ forgive our foolish ways/reclothe us in our rightful mind/in purer lives Thy service find/in deeper reverence praise.” No doubt the poet had in mind the story of the Gadarene demoniac who was a raving lunatic, crying and cutting himself with stones (Mark 5:1-15). When he saw Jesus, he cried with a loud voice: “Jesus, the Son of the Most High God.” But Christ did not accept his noisy, demonic worship, but quietened him and then healed him.

It seems Whittier wrote not “foolish ways,” but “feverish ways” in the original. This stanza is a prayer for spiritual sanity instead of religious madness. Perhaps it’s a call to go deeper with the Lord rather than being ostentatious with our personal and church activities. “In simple trust like theirs who heard/beside the Syrian sea/the gracious calling of the Lord/let us like them without a word/rise up and follow thee.” This scene comes to us from Luke 5:1-11 from the desperate cries of the fishermen: “Master, we toiled the whole night and have taken nothing.” Is this not our real life picture? We work for present comforts and future security. If we cannot make it by fair means, we are tempted to go into devious ways. In a frantic race with life, we miss the very essentials — peace and rest. For the fishermen to leave behind two boats full of fish to follow Jesus was something unusual. Something extraordinary must have happened. They saw something far beyond their livelihood. Now a new revelation had come to them. “O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with Thee, the silence of eternity, interpreted by love!

Silence often connotes to us aloofness or indifference. Here it means God the Son communicating with his Father in love and adoration. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Yet the communication was full of meaning, love and worship. “Drop Thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess, the beauty of Thy peace.” What the poet perhaps was trying to tell is that life is not a rat race of running, of activities, seeking fame and popularity. In running the race of life many get stressed and have mental breakdowns. God wants to relieve us from these and give us His peace. Jesus said, “Come to me all that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” The troubled world wants to see peace. The Christian’s witness for God is an ordered life. “Breathe through hearts of our desire, Thy coolness and Thy balm, let sense be dumb, let flesh retire, speak through the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm.”

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS FIRST RESPONDERS

No to naloxone Michael Potestio THE MERRITT HERALD

The Merritt Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) won’t seek to equip itself with the ability to administer naloxone, a drug which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, despite a dramatic increase in first responder calls. Fire Chief Dave Tomkinson said this service is best left to paramedics as they are able to transport patients to hospital and are more skilled administering the drug. “That level of service isn’t something that we’re interested in providing at this point in time,” Tomkinson said. The fire department’s response to first responder medical emergencies has increased since it added new software last year that simplified dispatching to these types of calls. In the past, MFRD would respond to about 35 first responder medical emergencies per year and now that number is in the hundreds, Tomkinson said.

“We’re a fire department,” Tomkinson said. “We do fire and rescue and although first responder response is something fairly new, we’re happy with the level of service we’re able to offer the community.” Opioid overdose can slow or stop breathing. Naloxone reverses this, restoring normal breathing and consciousness. Administering naloxone can prevent death or brain damage from lack of oxygen during an opioid overdose. Kamloops Fire Rescue firefighters added naloxone to their equipment at the beginning of the month and are trained to recognize and respond to opiate overdoses. This response includes performing rescue breathing with bag valve mask ventilations and oral airway placement, placing the patient in the recovery position and administering naloxone. Tomkinson said the fire department is equipped with bag valve masks and can address the respira-

Clean & Air-Conditioned Ample R/V Parking BELTING OUT BROADWAY It was a family affair at the Culture Club on July 6, as the Snee siblings took to the stage to sing a number of Broadway show tunes to an audience of about 60 people. The event was a fundraiser for the Nicola Valley Theatre Society, and the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council, with more than $400 collected for the two organizations. (Above) Juliana (13), Cameron (17) had the audience in stitches with their rendition of Anything you can do, while Evan (19) and Brooklynn (10) rounded out the musical Snee family, performing a number of songs of their own. A powerful connection to what matters most

Here is an illustration from the Old Testament story of Elijah (1 Kings 19:916). At Mount Carmel, Elijah showed his zeal for God by calling down fire from heaven and slew 450 prophets of Baal. After all the high pressure activities, he suffered a breakdown and just wanted to die. He ran a marathon and hid himself in a cave fearing for his life. There God revealed to him that He was not the tempestuous wind or the shattering earthquake or the devouring fire, but a still small voice. In that calm voice, God commanded Elijah how to build up the ministry of anointing kings. He asked him to find a successor to continue God’s ministry. God wants to speak to His followers as He did to Elijah. But we will not be able to hear His voice if we are ‘busy’ for God. Whittier wrote: “Let flesh retire…” Activities without waiting upon God can be carnal. God wants us first to learn of Him, to seek His mind, and do His will. We should let the Spirit of God work through us, then surely we will be engaged in building His kingdom. “Cease striving and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10).

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS

Search focused on ranch From Page 3 “I think there’s some places where he could have gone and [committed suicide] but he didn’t and that’s a big clue right there, Hobler said. After conducting some preliminary phone interviews, Gagnon said he believes the chances of finding Morrison alive are 50/50. In a press release he said it’s unknown if Morrison vanished on the property or walked away from the troubles in his life. Morrison was living in a trailer on the Stump Lake Ranch property while on the job and the then 44-year-old father of three had recently separated from his wife. He was also suffering from depression. His vehicle was left at the ranch and his personal effects were left in the trailer. He was in the process of moving the truck and trailer to his sister’s house. Hobler said that he’s seen people under a lot of stress fall into a state of psychosis and then wander off without direction. “I suspect that’s what happened here, he said. “I’ve seen it happen a couple times and it’s always baffling until you put the pieces together. Morrison was reported missing by his sister on Oct. 28, 2013 and RCMP conducted a ground search of the property three days later. That search involved Nicola Valley

Search and Rescue but not the team from Kamloops. Locals organized a search of the Stump Lake Ranch shortly after that in November, but also failed to find any sign of Morrison. “It’s like looking for that lost needle in a hay stack, said Broekhuizen. “You can search the same area six times and finally find it. Fremlin said the cowboys at the ranch have also kept an eye out for Morrison over the years. “We ride and walk all over the property, Fremlin said. “We always wonder what happened, she said. Broekhuizen said there’s nothing worse than a family having a loved one missing, and every bit helps to give them comfort she said of the new search. BCSI Investigations is supplying its services up to $30,000 free of charge to Morrison’s mother, Elizabeth Faber who says she has never given up the search for her son. “I saw a mother who is hurting badly, Gagnon said. “I’ve been looking all along. I’ve never stopped looking, Faber said. “I want to know what happened to my son. Morrison is described as five-footfive, 150 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. Anyone with any information on the disappearance of Morrison is asked to call BCSI at 1-604-922-6572.

CORONER REPORT

Body found The body of a man found deceased in a park in Kamloops has been identified as Kelly Ernest Brewer, a 26-year-old from Merritt. Brewer was found on July 6, his body discovered by a jogger on the bank of the creek in Peterson Park. The BC Coroners Service and the RCMP will continue to investigate to determine the cause and manner of Brewer’s death. A press release from the coroners service confirmed foul play has been ruled out.

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS POLICE FILES

Trio arrested

Knives found

Bikes swiped

Three Merritt residents were arrested in Kamloops on July 8 for being in possession of a truck stolen from behind the Prince Motel. Last Wednesday (July 6) police received a call that an uninsured, white, 1999 Dodge 2500 pickup truck had been stolen from a parking lot on Douglas Street. Two of the individuals found driving in it Friday — 42-year-old Janice Cote and 43-year-old Chris Pumphrey — remain in custody in Kamloops for possession of stolen property while the other male, who was not named by police, was released on a promise to appear in court.

A Merritt man in breach of his probation is now facing additional charges because police found him in possession of multiple knives. “He had prohibited weapons on his person when he was arrested,” said RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore. Shane Drown, 46, who is known to police, remains in custody for breaching his probation and possessing prohibited weapons, Dunsmore told the Herald. Drown was found in breach of no contact and curfew conditions last Thursday (July 7) which led to the arrest.

Two motorbikes were swiped from the backyard of a residence on Telamon Place sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning (July 10). RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore said the resident told police he discovered his fence had been dismantled when he reported the bikes stolen Sunday afternoon. The two vehicles are described as a Honda 175 and a Suzuki 370, both worth about $500 each. Police have no suspects in the theft and anyone with any information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or the Merritt RCMP detachment at 250-378-4262.

Petition to Remove all Forms of Sex Discrimination from the federal Indian Act Against Indian women who married non-Indian men and provide them equal reinstatement to their Indian Bands and enact changes ordered by Madam Justice Ross of the B.C. Supreme Court in the McIvor Case To be sent to: Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Parliament Hill, Canada. 1650 Yonge Street, Suite 103, Toronto, Ontario M4T 2A2 PETITION SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND To The Prime Minister, the Right Hon. Justin Trudeau, to the Minister of Justice for Canada, the Hon. Jody Wilson-Raybould, and to the Minster of Indian and Northern Affairs, the Hon. Carolyn Bennett in consideration of the Human Rights Complaint filed by Dr. Sharon Donna McIvor to the United Nations to which Canada must respond to remove sexual discrimination against Indian women. ACTION PETITIONED FOR We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now to remove all sex discrimination from the federal INDIAN ACT, R.S. C. 1985, as amended. R.S.C. 1985, c. 27 and so on, particularly as it discriminates against Indian women who married other Indian men of other Indian Bands other than their own, and to provide them with the same sexual equality provided to Indian women who married non-Indian men, retroactive to their date of marriage, and particularly to restore them to their original Indian Bands into which they were born with no restriction on their Band membership as was provided to s. 12(1)(b) Indian women restored in 1985 under Bill C-31, An Act to Amend the Indian Act, and to extend the same right to children and grandchildren with no restriction on their Band Membership rights. By delegating Band membership control to Chiefs and Councils, Canada delegated sex discrimination to one of its creatures, contrary to human rights legislation in Canada and contrary to International instrument of law to which Canada acceded including the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights [16 December 1966]’ , Convention on the Rights of the Child [20 November 1989]; , The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women [18 December 1979]; United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples [refer to Article 44 on women’s sexual equality rights in Indigenous women]. ACTION REQUIRED TO BE TAKEN BY THE STATE OF CANADA: Change the Indian Act and remove all barriers to sex equality for Indian women and allow unfettered Band membership rights to Indian women who married into other Bands, along with the first and second generation children of these women. This legal barrier prevents 10,000 Indian women, their 40,000 children, and their 60,000 grandchildren from returning to their community, family, culture, tradition and languages. Canada is also asked to implement fully the decision of Madam Justice Ross who rules in the McIvor v Canada case that all Indians whose names were removed the Indian Act, 1971 and earlier versions be restored to their s. 6(1) (a) Indian status and Membership in their birth Bands without restriction on time and the same be accorded to their children and grandchildren. The application of Bill C-31 and Bill-3 must be amended to remove the year 1951 and make the sex equality law effective back to all versions of the Indian Act that were used to remove Indian women and their children/grandchildren from their communities, cultures, traditions and languages and put them on an equal footing with Indian men. Cycling uses these same muscles and joints but does not involve the high impact associated with running. Muscles that are exercised regularly remain stronger, more flexible, and are less prone to injury. As well, the pressure exerted on the “hip bones while exercising helps prevent osteoporosis. The more

your bones are challenged, the more calcium they retain and the stronger they remain. Participating in any activity that elevates your heart and breathing rate helps to increase your physical endurance. When you are using the large muscles in your body, they demand an increased amount of oxygen, which is carried by the blood. The heart and lungs have to work harder to supply this. The more you exercise the stronger and more efficient the heart and lungs become. As a person betters their physical condition, their coordination and balance has been shown to improve as well. Improving a person’s dexterity is particularly important for seniors who tend to fall more often and are at a greater risk of wrist and hip fractures due to a decreased bone density. Cycling is not just for people who have arthritis, weak muscles, or decreased bone density. It is for anyone who enjoys getting out and taking in the great scenery we have in the Nicola Valley. Cycling is just one of many types of exercise that not only makes you feel good while doing it,

but it plays an active role in the prevention of other serious illnesses such as heart disease and osteoporosis. Dr. Colin Gage was born and raised in Merritt. He’s been helping patients from his clinic at Nicola Valley Chiropractic since 1996.

the human spirit. Rather than falling behind, they are forging new pathways. We all will be called upon in one way or another to shift from outer security to inner security. As we each gain inner strength, our strength as a species will grow. Our survival depends on each one of us tapping into and sharing our own particular awareness and wisdom. Although we all possess the ability to access the fullness of Universal wisdom, we often do not. This is largely because we do not know or believe that it is within us already. This is why every single being is crucial to the whole. No one is insignificant. Everyone is our teacher. Everyone. Especially the ones from whom we think we have nothing to learn! Security always a worry Times are not changing. They have already changed. And we are surviving. GWEN RANDALL-YOUNG We have Psychology learned FOR LIVING that security does not come from a job. Jobs can be lost, phased out, bought out or otherwise eliminated, and we still go on. Security does not come from relationships, because relationships can change or end, and people can leave us. Security does not come from money, because you can have lots of it, and still not be happy. There is no security out there. Many among us have lost jobs or careers due to change, or have chosen to leave difficult relationships and make it on their own. These are the ones who have had to jump in and learn to stay afloat amidst the tides of change. Too often they feel like failures, but in truth they are pioneers. They are deserving of our admiration and respect, for they are models of the strength of

Thunder lacrosse midgets secure provincial silver Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

When opportunity came knocking for the Nicola Valley Thunder midget lacrosse team, they made the most of it. The Thunder translated a last-minute wild card spot at the provincials in Coquitlam into a well-deserved silvermedal, the best finish by a local lacrosse side in the association’s 15-year history. And they could almost taste the gold. The Thunder lost the championship game 5-4 to the Shuswap Outlaws — their longtime, sometimes bitter Interior rivals— and the team that beat them out in the playdowns to the provincials two weeks ago. “It was wonderful how our team played down there,” said Nicola Valley head coach Rick Baker. “It was a real team effort. For a lot of these kids, this was their last year of minor lacrosse. It was a nice way to finish off.” Baker said that defence got his team to the provincial final. “We averaged less than three goals-against

in our five games at the tournament, which is pretty amazing. And we had really good goaltending. Colton Macaulay was outstanding. The way we played defence allowed him to really step out and challenge the shooter. Even when we did have breakdowns, Colton was there for us.” The gold-medal game was a dandy from start to finish. Shuswap jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. “Our guys were nervous, for sure,” said Thunder assistant coach John Stead. “They had lost to Shuswap 7-1 the last time the two teams had met.” The Thunder came out gangbusters in the second, however, and tied the game 2-2 on goals by Parker Finch and Anthony Tulliani. Nicola Valley went ahead 4-2 early in the third period, as Nick Anscomb and Holden King found the back of the net in the opening three minutes. Shuswap refused to roll over, responding with two quick goals of their own to tie the game at 4-4. That’s the

MEDAL MOMENT The Nicola Valley Thunder midget lacrosse team placed second at the provincial B championships in Coquitlam on the weekend — the best finish ever by a local lacrosse side. The Thunder lost 5-4 to the Shuswap Outlaws in the gold medal game on Sunday. The Thunder players are (left to right, fromt row) Gorden Ware, Colton Macaulay, Parker Finch, Micaela Smith, Jesse Landerkin, Nick Anscomb, Bill Brewer, Holden King, (back row) Xni Grismer-Voght, Tanveer Bansi, Phillip McRae, Mack Stead, Travis Simon, Max Bose, Anthony Tulliani, Tom Girard, Oliver Hardy. way it stayed until 6:26 left in the period when the Outlaws tallied the game winner. “The Nicola ValleyShuswap rivalry over the years has always been an intense one,” said Stead. “This game was no different. But, give them credit. The Outlaws found a way to win.” The Thunders’ road to the final was an impressive one. In preliminary roundrobin play, they defeated Port Coquitlam 8-3, Oceanside 9-5 and host Coquitlam 8-0.

Speed demon

“We lost twice to Oceanside and once to Poco at tournaments earlier in the season,” said Nicola Valley captain Mack Stead, the team’s leading scorer at the provincials with 13 goals, and the team’s tournament MVP. “Those losses just motivated us. We knew we could beat them.” In the crossover semi-finals, Nicola Valley easily defeated Comox Valley 6-1, while Shuswap were 5-4 victors over Port Coquitlam.

“We thought it was nice that two Interior teams made it to the final,” said Baker. The Nicola Valley squad at this year’s provincials was comprised of seven first-year and 10 second-year players, along with one bantam-

Travis Simon — have been together since tyke (ages six and seven). “It’s been really neat to watch all these players develop — from tiny little kids to the mature athletes they are now,” said assistant coach Stead. “The life skills they’ve learned along the way are huge.” Baker has been at the helm of the team for four seasons, helped by Stead, Shane Simon, Steve Jurriett and Gray Anscomb. In addition to the younger Stead being acknowledged as his team’s tournament MVP, Nick Anscomb was given the fair play award at the recognition ceremonies held Saturday night in Coquitlam. “I hope that all the players really cherish what they were able to do down there,” said Baker. “That’s what is most important to me.”

Make it five in a row for Mair-Valin at Coquihalla Open Kamloops golfer gets the job done, again Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

Kamloops golfer Karen Mair-Valin was embarrassed when I threw out the word ‘juggernaut’ following her win on the weekend at the Coquihalla Open ladies’ golf tournament, held at the Merritt Golf & Country Club. How better to describe her performance — not just this year, but for the past five years? The soft-spoken Mair-Valin, who plays out of the Eagle Point Golf Club, has won every Coquihalla Open held since 2012 — an incredible run regardless of what sport you’re talking about. Mair-Valin said this year’s two-round total of 79-81-160 and four-stroke victory over Merritt’s own Diana Lorenz was the toughest of the lot. “I came in this year more nervous than perhaps I’ve ever been. My game was truly not where I would like it to be. I’ve been having a hard time breaking 85 at home. “The first day, my arms and legs were shaking so hard for the first five holes. It was

really hard to calm myself down, and just trust myself.” The name of MairValin’s game is consistency, and for most of the weekend, she was true to the word. There was just one hiccup on Sunday. “I was cruising along, feeling pretty comfortable, then took three double-bogeys in a row. That was a bit of an OMG moment. I thought about what my sister always tells me at those moments, took a deep breath, calmed myself down, and came in well.” Winner of the low net competition at this year’s Coquihalla Open was Christina Lacasse from the Sun Rivers Golf Club with a score of 135. No one was more shocked at the victory than Lacasse herself, a 26-handicapper who shot rounds of 91 and 96. “Totally surprised. This is the first tournament I’ve ever been to,” she said. Lacasse is in just her second year of playing golf regularly. “Like a lot of people, I only golfed once or twice a year — usually

She and partner Balwant Bains (in the background) defeated the team of Diane Quinn and Pavitar Dosanjh 9-8 (7-5 tie breaker) in the mixed doubles final on Sunday. On Saturday, Sahota partnered with Deanna Sheloff to win the ladies’ doubles event. They beat the Ashcroft team of Maria Martin Russell and Anna Ho 8-2 in the final. Also on Saturday, the duo of Dosanjh and Amar Kanghura defeated the pairing of Andy Ghag and Jean Belleau 8-0 in the men’s doubles championship game. great — very helpful when it comes to the rules of the game. I really appreciated the kindness. I would encourage anybody to go the Merritt tournament. It was such a friendly, fun-

loving yet competitive group.” Lacasse and the rest of the field of 65 had to make a few adjustments due to the heavy rain on Saturday morning. “They had shotgun

starts both days and it worked out great,” said Mair-Valin. “I was amazed at how well things drained considering how much water it got. The course was in fabulous shape.”

We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at the Coquihalla/Gillis House, whose quality of care were such that Mom’s last four years were comfortable and peaceful. Mom’s peace of mind was attributed to her faith in a loving Creator that she so loved. Marie Isabel Connelly affectionately known as “wee Mic” by her mother Meg, was the youngest of seven children, born November 9, 1926 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Life on their quarter section homestead was a safe shelter from the hardships of the depression. After her father Frank’s death in 1945, Mom moved west to Vancouver where her 4 sisters had already ventured, there she met and married Battista Piccin in 1955. Marie was raising her two sons, Rocci and Patrick in Abbotsford when her mother Meg died in 1958. When her husband died in 1967, Marie continued to make her home in Abbotsford, working for the “Homemakers Service” cooking, cleaning and caring for young and old in their time of need. Her door was always open to family and friends, where they could always depend on her generosity and kindness. After her youngest son Patrick, died in 2008, Mom moved to Merritt to be closer to Rocci and family. The toll of loss on Mom soon required assisted care at the Gillis House, where she was well attended to until her peaceful death, June 30, 2016.
