Mayor’s Message On behalf of Council and staff at the City of Merritt, I am pleased to provide our latest Activities Guide for Spring/Summer of 2020. Our Department of Recreation & Facilities publishes a new Activity Guide three times every year. The Guide is also available online at Merritt.ca. This way, our citizens have up-to-date information available at their fingertips to plan for social, physical, educational, and other events. Our staff are committed to providing activities and programs that you, our citizens, want and enjoy. We provide those activities in a safe and friendly environment, while keeping the prices affordable to our citizens. Please feel free to contact our Recreation & Facilities Department at the Merritt Civic Centre at 250-315-1050 to: • Inquire about current programs and timing • Teach or instruct an activity or program • Rental of our facilities • Talk constructively about adding programs or events that may better our delivery of service to the public. Parent ‘n’ Tot Exercise . 2-5 yrs Mondays, March 30 – June 29 . 12 wks 10:00 – 10:45 am . FREE Focus on play! Strap them on or chase them down...join us for this upbeat, parent participating, gross motor class. In this ever-changing class we’ll dance, jump, climb, balance, spin, toss, stretch and laugh our way to flexed muscles and happy hearts. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and to bring water.Sponsored program. Minimum 6! (no class April 13 + May 18) Instructed by Andrea Shintah Healthy Beginnings . 0-6 yrs Mondays, March 30 – June 29 . 12 wks 9:00 am – 12:00 pm . FREE Each week children and parents participate in games, songs, crafts snacks and stories. Any craft or snacks contributions are greatly appreciated. Parents supervise their own children while visiting with other parents. Sponsored by the Public Health Agency of Canada (no class April 13 + May 18) Babysitter’s Course . 11+ yrs Saturday, May 30 Friday, August 14 9:00 am – 4:00 pm . $60 Basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth 11–15 years old. Participants learn how to provide care to younger children in a variety of age groups, and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. Course also offers youth the training to promote themselves as a babysitter to prospective parents. Minimum 6!

Spring Break Camp . 7-12 yrs Monday, March 16 – Friday, March 20 . 5 days 8:30 am – 4:00 pm . $125/wk or $30/day During this week long camp, your child will be participating in various dry land sports, aquatic sports, free play and field trips! After attending our camp, your kids won’t be complaining about being bored! This flexible camp allows you to register for 1 day, or up to all 5. Girls Field Hockey . 11-14 yrs Tuesdays & Thursdays, April 7 – 30 . 4 wks/8 classes Tuesdays & Thursdays, May 5 – 28 . 4 wks/8 classes 4:15 – 5:15 pm . $40/ea session @ Smith Pioneer Park, Lower Nicola Introducing to Merritt a new sport for girls. Come and learn some new stick skills and drills for the light sport enthusiast. It’s learning a new game and playing a small scrimmage to see what the sport is all about. Bring your friends as it’s definitely something to try. Recommended: shin guards, cleats or running shoes. Minimum 6! Instructed by Erin Peters Hug-a-Tree and Survive Thursday, April 2 . FREE 4:00 – 5:00 pm This is an RCMP search and rescue initiative that helps lost children survive in the woods. This proactive preventative program originated in San Diego, CA after a nine-year-old boy became lost and tragically died in the wilderness. A core program under the AdventureSmart banner, Hug-a-Tree and Survive teaches children invaluable outdoor survival lessons. This is a FREE program but registration is required as space is limited. Instructed by Constable Dunsmore

Please Shower Before Swimming!

All swimmers are asked to shower thoroughly with soap before entering the pool to help keep the water clean for your swimming enjoyment. Expectations of Adults Swimming with Children (Role of Parent/Guardian 16 yrs +) Caregivers of children 6 and under must always stay within arm’s reach and in full sight of your child while in the pool/facility. • Actively engage with children in the water. Encourage safe entries and exits into or out of the water. Maintain sight and attention of children in your care. • Encourage the safe use of all equipment - slides, diving board, noodles, mats and boats. • Help Lifeguards enforce facility safety rules. Use walking feet on the deck, sliding feet first off, the red rock, jumping off the diving board, sliding down the slide or coming off the rope swing appropriately. Please do not allow your child to climb on the horseshoe or lap lanes. • Encourage safety skills. Teach children to wait for an adult when they come to water. i.e. Stop, Look, Listen, and ask to go in the water! The caregiver should be the first one in the water and last to get out. Pool Diapers should be worn by all children who have not been toilet trained. Persons with diarrhea shall be directed to stay out of the pool until they are well. Please help us to avoid a pool fouling as it is a serious concern, which will lead to pool closures and health concerns. Formed stool pool closure will be a minimum 1-hour closure. Diarrhea or loose stool will result in a minimum 24-hour closure of the pool. Please advise staff immediately if you have had or see a problem. Lap Lanes are usually available however depending on bather load the sharing of a lane may be required. If there are designated slow or fast lanes, please choose a lane most compatible with your skill level. Respect for your fellow swimmer will ensure everyone an enjoyable experience. Please note: • Glass is not allowed at Nicola Valley Aquatic Centre. Due to the danger of glass and bare feet, please use alternative options for drinks or food containers. • Water bottles are not permitted in the sauna. Due to the damage water can have on the elements and electrical components, please drink water on pool deck. • Cell phones are not permitted in the change rooms, or sauna. If you are listening to your personal music, please use earphones/buds, etc. Lion’s Den Fitness Room Policy - 16+ yrs. • Patrons 13 - 15 years must attend a scheduled fitness orientation. Once completed they can use the fitness room while accompanied by an adult 19+ yrs. Please ask the cashier about orientation options. • Clean Indoor running shoes that cover the entire foot must always be worn. • For health & safety reasons all other footwear (sandals, crocs, flip flops, work boots, dress shoes) are not permitted. • Shirts or upper body athletic wear must always be worn. • Jeans are not permitted. • Bags, back packs, outside shoes, and all other personal items are not permitted in the fitness room. • Lockers located in the change rooms for this purpose, cost 50 cents (2 quarters).

This is a program that continues to build on child’s abilities.

Regular Admission Want to increase your muscular strength, balance, stretch and flexibility? This class will build on maintaining proper form by keeping a well-aligned spine and stable core. Regular Admission This class combines running, interval training and a variety of exercises designed to decrease body fat, increase cardiovascular efficiency, improve strength, and help people get into a routine of regular exercise.

Regular Admission This ‘Aqua Boot Camp’ style pushes people to work at a higher intensity than they would if exercising alone.
