TRICK OF THE TRADE Gavin Harris, 13, jumps over a garbage can lid at the Merritt skate park on Tuesday. In honour of the United Nations International Youth Day on Aug. 12, Breathe Bikes hosted a group of youth at the skate park to ride their bikes and scooters. The City of Merritt offered kids a free swim and a movie as well. Lindsay Fehr of Breathe Bikes said that because this year’s youth day has a theme of mental health, they decided to give their youth “a mental health day.” “We really wanted to start giving youth something to do,” Fehr said. The Smart Step Youth Association is also running its annual “Paint Our City Clean” campaign next week, during which community youth clean graffiti from buildings and pick up litter. The highway was closed for

approximately an hour and a half as emergency workers attended to the accident scene west of Sunset Main. The driver and one of the male

passengers — who had a broken femur — were transported by air ambulance to Kelowna. The two other occupants of the car, another male and another female, also of Chilliwack, were transported on the ground to Kelowna. According to witnesses, at approximately 10:15 a.m., the man’s 2004 silver Mazda 3 passed them at a high rate of speed and lost control, entering the centre median. The vehicle struck the median hard and tumbled end-over-end with enough force to eject the engine block from the car, an RCMP press release stated. The man was the lone occupant of the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating.

Meet Merritt’s newest doctor By Michael Potestio the herald

A scar under Drew Soderberg’s left eye marks where he was struck in the face by an ice skate during a hockey game about 10 years ago. While standing in front of the opponent’s net, Soderberg dove to try and poke in a loose puck before a defenceman’s skate hit him in the face under his eye. The skate fractured Soderberg’s orbital bone and his eye was protruding from its socket, he told the Herald. “My nose was pretty much gone. I had no cheekbone left, no upper jaw, Soderberg said. “It was ugly. He said his vision in his eye returned in about a month’s time. He had three reconstructive surgeries over the course of a year to repair the damage. But the scar is also a symbol of when his life changed for the better. Soderberg said his plastic surgeon encouraged him to go to medi-

cal school, which was something he had considered but did not pursue as he wasn’t serious enough about school, he said. At the time, Soderberg, who’s originally from Sooke, was working for his parents at a resort on Vancouver Island. “I guess it was a life changer. It was probably one of the best things that happened to me. It

smartened me up, got me going down the right path, Soderberg said. He got the final push he needed toward medical school after a friend bet him he wouldn’t — so he did. In 2012, Soderberg received his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan’s Regina campus. He completed his residency in Regina, splitting time between the Pasqua

Hospital and Regina General Hospital, he said. Soderberg said he spent the next two years working in Regina as well as shifts in small Saskatchewan towns such as Meadow Lake. Last month, he moved to Merritt because he wanted to come back to B.C. He has filled one of three Interior Health Authority job openings for doctors in Merritt. Soderberg said his specialty is general family medicine, and his primary interest is emergency medicine. Originally thought to be coming to Merritt for a trial period, Soderberg said he’s made a commitment to stay for at least three years. Since his arrival in the Nicola Valley, Soderberg has been working with Doctors Van Der Merwe and Bester and at the Nicola Valley Hospital emergency room. He said the staff at the hospital and the doctors’ offices have been great since he’s been in Merritt.

No gas leak FortisBC found no evidence of a natural gas line leak Tuesday morning despite a gas-like odour reported around the Nicola Valley. FortisBC spokesperson David Wiley said the company had employees in the Merritt area investigating several calls. He said they found no readings of natural gas. Fire Chief Dave Tomkinson said members of the fire department were on scene with FortisBC and confirmed the company found no evidence of natural gas. Wiley said the company odourizes its natural gas and that anyone who smells a sulfur or rotten eggs smell should call the utility company at 1-800-663-9911 to report it.

Ministry of Social Development changing to afternoon hours By Emily Wessel the herald

newsroom@merrittherald.com

The Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation office in Merritt is reducing the hours it’s open to process inperson income assistance applications next month. As of Sept. 8, the office will be open to walk-ins from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. instead of its current 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On the Wednesday and Thursday of income assistance cheque issue weeks, the office will be open from 9 a.m. until noon in addition to the afternoon hours. The Merritt office is one of 11 smaller offices in the province that will see its face-to-face hours changed to 1 to 4 p.m. Other offices getting a reduction in hours include those in 100 Mile House, West Kelowna, Trail, and Fort St. John. The ministry administers income assistance and delivers employment

programs to those who are unemployed or underemployed. There are 625 income assistance cases in Merritt, ministry communications director Lisa Leslie stated in an email. “Smaller, regional offices that are moving towards modified office hours are typically those where demand can be met within a shorter period of time in the day,” Leslie wrote. Leslie wrote client volume at the Merritt office is greater in the afternoons as people travel from neighbouring communities including Lytton, Logan Lake and First Nations. The change in hours coincides with the expansion of services available through the ministry’s online portal, My Self Serve (https://myselfserve.gov.bc.ca). Clients can access that website any time to view their file information, cheque status, and message with ministry staff, Leslie wrote. As well, the ministry’s contact centres are avail-

able from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday by telephone at 1-866-866-0800. The Ministry of Social Development shares a Coutlee Avenue office space with Service BC, which will retain its regular hours. Clients can access phones and computers in that office if needed, Leslie wrote. However, ministry staff members will still be in the building in the mornings to work on client applications. No one with an urgent request will be turned away, she stated. The change in hours came as a surprise to some members of Merritt’s social service community. Merritt Integration Project chair Chelsea Morrey said she received the email alerting her to the hour change on July 21. She said she was surprised to learn of the change without having consultation with the province prior to the announcement.

“When we got this recent email about the services, the first thought in my mind was where was the consultation process? There was none. That’s just a bit alarming,” Morrey said. The Merritt Integration Project is a group of senior managers of community agencies that meets monthly to discuss social services, gaps in service, and changes in the community’s needs. The ministry’s change in hours was one of those topics. “It’s a bit disheartening that the consultation process wasn’t in place so that we could assist folks in our community to deal with this change,” Morrey said. Some clients have pay-as-you-go cellphones instead of landlines and so cannot risk long hold times with the ministry’s contact centres, Morrey said. As well, some homes in the area are not served by Internet access, so some

clients rely on in-person service, she said. “Merritt, being a rural community, we can’t just adapt and get on with it. Our provincial government still has not lived up to every rural person will have the option of having Internet,” she said, referencing a promise made by the provincial government under the Gordon Campbell administration. Morrey said the fact the office will extend its hours on cheque issue days is not satisfactory. “People are budgeting so tight and so hard that leading up to the day the cheque is there, if they made one mistake on their stub and they don’t know it, they aren’t getting a cheque. Then what do you do?” she said. Morrey said the members of the Merritt Integration Project hope to see consultations in the future if changes to service are coming down the pipeline so they can better prepare at their agencies.

Chief, council salaries made public By Emily Wessel the herald

newsroom@merrittherald.com

Salaries for First Nations chiefs in the Merritt area ranged from $13,000 to just over $50,000 in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. Remuneration for chiefs and councillors is a small part of the financial information now publicly available for the first time online under the First Nations Financial Transparency Act. The act applies to approximately 600 First Nations across Canada, which must submit their remuneration schedules and financial audits to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada yearly. Shackan Band Chief Percy Joe made $13,000 with $3,725 in expenses, while councillors Joan Seymour and Sharon Joe each made $9,100. Seymour’s expenses were $256 and Sharon Joe’s were $8,061. As Lower Nicola Band had an election in October 2013, which fell within the reporting year, the schedule of remuneration includes salaries to outgoing chief Victor York and other outgoing councillors. Lower Nicola paid

outgoing chief Victor York $24,261 for the year ending March 31, 2014, and new chief Aaron Sam $25,500. The two had expenses of $5,620 and $6,456, respectively. Councillors’ pay ranged from $10,265 (Clyde Sam) to $29,130 (Robert Sterling) over 12 months. Nooaitch Chief Joyce Sam made $22,000 for her chief duties, with $9,052 in expenses. Three of the four councillors made $8,400 while Coun. Olivia Buck made $8,900. Upper Nicola Chief Dan Manuel made $50,880 with $34,973 in travel expenses. The five Upper Nicola Band councillors received between $10,000 and $11,400 in their salaries with travel expenses ranging from $1,579 to $2,455. Coldwater Band former chief Harold Aljam made $45,071 with $11,091 in expenses. Coun. Terrence Spahan was at the low end of the salary with $3,427, while Coun. Carol Charters topped the councillor pay with $24,094. No salary was entered for the four remaining councillors. The First Nations

Financial Transparency Act received royal assent on March 27, 2013, and came into law for this year. It marks the first time financial information from First Nations has been legislated to be shared publicly. Each of the five bands in the Merritt area submitted its reports prior to the federal government’s July 29 deadline. The records are to remain online and accessible by the public for 10 years. Bands are also required to make the information available to their members. The full reports are available at www.aandcaadnc.gc.ca. The act has brought to light some questionable salaries and bonuses for chiefs in other parts of the country, including in the Lower Mainland, where Kwikwetlem Chief Ron Giesbrecht accepted an $800,000 bonus for work performed as the band’s economic development officer. In Manitoba’s Buffalo Point First Nation — which has less than 100 voting members — hereditary Chief John Thunder took home a reported $129,398 in a year.

Thank You

Merritt mayor, council salaries available to public At the City of Merritt, the salaries paid to mayor and council are made publicly available each year in the city’s Statement of Financial Information. Municipalities in B.C. must submit their statements annually to the province under the Financial Information Act. Merritt Mayor Susan Roline was paid $20,708 for the year ending Dec. 31, 2013. Councillors Dave Baker, Kurt Christopherson, Mike Goetz, Harry Kroeker and Clara Norgaard were paid $12,425. Former councillor Alastair Mur-

doch, who left his elected position in October 2013, received $10,753. Nogaard had the lowest expenses, with $290.03, while Roline topped expenses with $6,228.10. Mayor and council members’ pay were set at flat rates of $20,000 and $12,000, respectively, in the council indemnity bylaw of 2012. The city’s Statement of Financial Information also includes a schedule of remuneration for employees who pull in more than $75,000. Last year, the city’s chief administrative officer was paid the most of city staff with a salary of $124,403.

Farm changes a great leap forward By Tom Fletcher black press tfletcher@blackpress.ca

VICTORIA – The B.C. government’s intentions for the Agricultural Land Reserve have been clarified by a public consultation that proposes new commercial and industrial uses on farmland. Political watchers may recall that this was the hill the NDP was prepared to die on this spring. It was going to be a farmland looting spree for right-wing property developers and all hope of “food security” would be dashed. As I attempted to explain at the time, the changes have little or nothing to do with ALR exclusions. Now a discussion paper poses a series of questions, some of which illustrate the need to bring farmland regulations up to date. The first one deals with restrictions on retail sales, a case study in arbitrary state control. There is a strict maximum floor space. A minimum one half of retail sales must be produced on that farm. Food packing, preparation and processing are similarly restricted. This requires multiple duplicate operations of questionable viability. It brings to mind Mao Tse Tung’s Great Leap Forward, where farmers all had little iron smelting furnaces out back to make tools. But I digress. “Amongst other things,” the discussion paper says, “lessening the restrictions on on-farm processing could allow the establishment of abbatoirs (large, small or mobile) on farms, to serve surrounding cattle, game or poultry farms.” Then there’s cheese, fruit juice and even medical marijuana products. And did you know that wineries and cideries are allowed on farmland but breweries, distilleries and meaderies aren’t?

the hard work we do here at our small office in Merritt — poring over facts and figures, checking and re-checking spellings of names, editing for clarity, conforming to Canadian Press style, and the list goes on — we hate to see a mistake make it to print. However, as anyone alive can tell you, mistakes are inevitable. The darnedest thing about a mistake in a newspaper, though, is it can’t be changed once it’s printed. And as much as it sticks on our page, it sticks in our heads approximately 100 times longer. So, if you flip over to today’s Herald Sports section, you’ll find an extra pair of pages to accommodate all the sports news that’s ready to go.

The inevitability of mistakes is not a pleasant reality to face, but it just has to happen every once in a while. Sometimes the machine is well-oiled, and other times, well, the gears grind. It’s just the universe’s way of keeping us humble, I suppose. While I’m on the topic of glitches, a major one has cropped up in Saskatchewan in its quest to change SaskPower users to smart meters. The Saskatchewan government ordered its Crown corporation power utility to remove 105,000 smart meters from homes last week after eight unexplained fires. In each case, the fire destroyed the smart meter but thankfully did not

spread to the homes to which they were attached. The concern is such that the city of Medicine Hat, Alta. has actually halted its smart meter replacement program. The fires are all linked to one brand of meter, and of course the company that makes them said in a statement the cause of the fires isn’t known for sure and the fires may not have originated in the smart meters at all. While the local fight against smart meter installation has been quiet lately, that doesn’t mean it’s over — especially with the heat these unexplained fires bring to the topic. The situation in Saskatchewan has sparked concerns from people having smart meters installed

across Canada. BC Hydro must have heard the news, because it promptly issued a statement reading “there is no evidence that a smart meter has ever been the cause of a fire in British Columbia.” BC Hydro was also quick to point out it uses smart meters made by a different manufacturer than the ones installed — and now uninstalled — by SaskPower. While I am not one to fan the flames of fear that each and every one of the 1.9 million smart meters BC Hydro has installed so far is a ticking firebomb, I am also not a fan of unexplained fires. When there’s room for error — human or mechanical — once in a while, it’s going to happen.

YOUR OPINION

Fiscal accountability increased by act DAN ALBAS View from the HILL Recently, I have received a number of inquiries on the First Nations Financial Transparency Act. In large part, the comments have been raised over the financial disclosure (as required under the law) that a chief from the Kwikwetlem First Nation in B.C. received over $914,000 in the 20132014 fiscal year. Further commentary occurred this week when it was reported that if elected to government, the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada would scrap

the new First Nations Financial Transparency Act. The bill was opposed by the Liberals in the House of Commons. This leads to the question: what is the First Nations Financial Transparency Act? A brief summary of this act, which recently came into force, is that it requires First Nations to publicly disclose consolidated financial statements that include financial information on how much individual community leaders are paid, including expenses. In short, First Nations administrations must report the same type of information that is publicly available from other levels of government. Why the need to make this disclosure requirement a law?

It should be pointed out that in some cases there are First Nations communities that have, for some time, voluntarily provided this information to band members. However, in other cases, this information was unavailable and in some situations, band members were unsuccessful in having this information provided to them. Some have suggested that this may dissuade interested band members from inquiring further out of fear of repercussion. In these situations, the only recourse for a band member was to appeal directly to the minister of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Rather than have the minister deal with such requests on an ad hoc basis, a more fair

and balanced approach is to create a standard that applies equally across the board to ensure information can be easily found by band members. Accountability is a basic principle of democratic governance and it is important for all elected officials to be held to account by the citizens who elect them. Increased information through disclosure can also help provide clarity and put to rest allegations and rumours that may be unhelpful and not factual. My thoughts on this legislation? As most will know, I support increased accountability; however, it is also important to recognize that while one chief is paid $914,000, in our riding, for example, the chief of the Lower Nicola Band was paid

just over $25,000 during the same period. It is also worth recognizing that some chiefs also serve as the band’s economic development officer — an added responsibility that may understandably increase annual compensation. I have recently been asked whether or not elected officials should be allowed to serve as employees, particularly if they are the ones who are in charge of compensation as well as hiring. These are good governance questions for First Nations communities. We should note that bands themselves have also become far more complex operations than many citizens may realize. For example, the Penticton Indian Band in the 2012-2013 fiscal period received federal funding in excess of $9 mil-

lion to provide many critical services to band members. As these are significant amounts with many services involved, increased accountability through the First Nations Financial Transparency Act is, in my view, helpful to provide more information for all involved. Now that the First Nations Financial Transparency Act has come into force and some would prefer it was scrapped, I would also be interested in hearing your thoughts on this new legislation. As always, I welcome all comments and questions on this or on other federal matters and can be reached at dan.albas@ parl.gc.ca or toll-free at 1-800-665-8711. Dan Albas is the member of Parliament for Okanagan-Coquihalla.

Less restrictions on craft liquor industry From Page 6 (Mead is made from honey, and doesn’t have to be drunk from a bronze mug while wearing a horned helmet.) Now that we’ve discovered that breweries don’t have to be giant urban industrial plants producing mediocre lager that all tastes the same, possibilities abound. On-farm wine and cider sales have similarly quaint retail space and product origin restrictions. The government proposes to allow sales of products not made on site, as long as they’re made in B.C. This could make more

entail is not yet known, as the consultation and regional meetings continue until Aug. 22. There are proposals to bypass the Agricultural Land Commission for certain kinds of farmland subdivision in zone two. These are where the subdivided parcels are a quarter section (160 acres) or bigger, or where they are divided by a road or waterway. And finally there are proposed exemptions from ALC scrutiny of leases, to allow “intergenerational transfer,” so retiring farmers don’t have to plead for state permission to remain on their own property. Another exemption

would “encourage the use of otherwise unfarmed land by existing or new farmers.” NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham, who circulated a photo of herself with a samurai sword in a theatrical “Kill Bill 24” campaign, continues to insist that these changes open up 90 per cent of ALR land for “development.” It’s a hypocritical as well as a misleading statement, since a portion of her own Saanich farm property is rented to a successful craft gin distillery. Sitting on a fat wallet can K C I T S P A H C give you a pain in the back By Felize HOMEMADE

DR. COLIN GAGE Spinal COLUMN Would you believe that sitting on a big wallet is a really common problem? How many of you place your wallet in your back pocket and think nothing of leaving it there all day as you sit in your chair at work or in the car? Your hips and pelvis are the foundation for the low back. Think of them like the concrete foundation on your house. If the foundation is not constructed close to perfectly level, the rest of the house will be uneven as well.

The taller the house, the greater it will be tilted. Your back can be exposed to the same scenario. If your wallet is in the back right pocket and you are sitting on it, the right hip and pelvis will be sitting higher than the left. The thicker the wallet, the more uneven the pelvis will be. Have you ever noticed that no matter what position your body is in, your head will always attempt to remain upright? Your balance and vision work best when your head is in this position. For this reason, your brain will always attempt to keep your head in as close to an upright position as possible. When your pelvis is sitting unevenly, your lower back will lean to one side.

Sitting on a big wallet can lead to big problems with your back over time.

Then, to compensate, your upper back and neck will always attempt to bend the other way. This will allow your head to be level. If this position or crooked posture is maintained for long periods of time, your back will begin to suffer. The curves put pressure on the joints of the back. The muscles

become tired and achy. Even the nerves that exit the spine can become irritated, making matters even worse. This is when patients usually enter my office. They can’t understand why they are in such pain. They ask what is wrong with them considering they didn’t do any heavy lifting. In passing, I always

ask them if they are storing their wallet in the back pocket of their pants. If the answer is yes, this is the first thing we eliminate. Then, with chiropractic treatment, we get their stiff and sore joints moving again. We also teach them to stretch the tight muscles. However, if the patient continues to leave the wallet in the pocket, the back pain may not go away. If it does disappear, it will likely reoccur. If you do not eliminate the cause of the back problem, the symptoms will almost always come back. This is why we tell patients to treat the cause of their problem, not just their symptoms.

Fighting stresses relationships GWEN RANDALL-YOUNG Psychology FOR LIVING Stress can be hard on couples. Whether life is just too busy, the children are sick or difficult to manage,

or there are financial strains, couples often end up taking things out on each other. When adults become frustrated, they often revert to a more childlike level, perhaps without even realizing it. Attacking or blaming one another is what competing siblings might do. Name-calling, putting the other down or taunting also belong to the category of child-

hood coping strategies. Children resort to these strategies because they do not know any others. Adults should have the ability to realize when stress is building, and to take preventive action to stop things from deteriorating. When children fight, it is clear to us that both parties are contributing to the problem. When adults fight, the same is true.

While we cannot control the actions or behaviours of the other, we can stop ourselves from regressing or participating in an unhealthy process. Take a time out. Get focused on solutions. You will be much further ahead if you are both on the same team.

Merritt Speedway plays host to a racing legend Seventy-seven-year-old Al Tourond still going full throttle, pedal to the metal By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

A near-capacity crowd of over 200 stock car enthusiasts got an unexpected treat on the August long weekend as racing celebrity Al Tourond made his firstever appearance at the Merritt Speedway. The 77-yearold Tourond, an inductee into the B.C. Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2010, wasted little time leaving a favourable impression with the enthusiastic crowd, winning both the dash and heat races in the Street class on the Saturday night. Tourond, who now calls Aldergrove home, might well have won the night’s featured 30-lap main event as well had a late-race blown tire not taken him into the concrete barriers ringing the track — twisting some metal, and knocking him out of action for the remainder of the weekend. “Yeah, I hit the wall pretty good,” Tourond said. “It was game over. It bent quite a bit of stuff and broke the power steering.” Tourond didn’t go down easily. He and his pit chief, 74-yearold George Irwin, tried everything they could to get back on track for Sunday’s racing card. “We almost got ’er

fixed. Both George and I really appreciate all the help the local racers gave us — from Tom Parsons up Mammette Lake Road to the guys at Lordco in town. They all went above and beyond.” Tourond didn’t let the minor setback on the weekend faze him one bit. He’s seen and done it all in his over-50-years of racing from Ontario to the Pacific Northwest. “I started my career in the ’50s at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) in Toronto,” he said. We’d race there on Friday nights and then trailer up to Wasaga Beach (on Georgian Bay) and race there on Saturdays. I also raced in London, Ontario, in Barrie and at the Flamboro Speedway outside Toronto.” Tourond moved west in 1965, eventually settling in Surrey for the next 30 years. “I started racing again in Langley in 1967, and by the ’70s was travelling and racing all over the Northwest,” he said. “It was a whole lot of fun. In many cases, I didn’t even own the car. I just showed up in my racing suit and drove. They said all I needed to know was how to go fast and turn left. They used to call me a trained ape.” Tourond remembers

LONG MAY YOU RUN (Above) In front of a big crowd, Aldergrove’s Al Tourond, 77, and his 1980 Camaro (2) take the early lead in the Street stock dash on Saturday, August 2 at the Merritt Speedway. On Tourond’s outside is Abbotsford’s Tiffany MacDonald (27) while close behind is Murray Jones (28) from Langley. Tourond, a member of the B.C. Motorsports Hall of Fame, would go on to win Saturday’s dash and heat events before a broken steering box forced him to the sidelines for the remainder of the weekend. some great encounters with some of the sport’s future stars. “I raced against NASCAR legends like Red Farmer, Bobby Allison and Janet Guthrie. I also met Rusty Wallace, who was just 16 at the time and in the pit for Larry Phillips. All he could see was girls,” Tourond said.

Otters excel at Regionals Cents golf 14 swimmers qualify for Provincials By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

A total of 25 members of the Merritt Otters Swim Club attended the Okanagan regional championships at the H20 Pool in Kelowna on the August long weekend. No fewer than 14 of them have qualified for the BCSSA provincial meet in Kamloops from August 15 to 17. “It was a great weekend,” Otters head coach Chelsea Harris said on August 4. “Everyone did really well. ” Individual event qualifiers to Provincials are Otters Div. 1 swimmers Ashley Cavaliere (50-metre butterfly and 100-metre freestyle) and Miranda Cavaliere (50-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke and 50-metre breast-

stroke), along with Div. 3 swimmer Bianca Cavaliere (50-metre and 100-metre freestyle and 100-metre individual medley), Div. 7 swimmer and

Otters assistant coach Dierdre Holmwood (50-metre freestyle) and Div. 8 swimmer Koren Lefebvre (50-metre freestyle). The Merritt Otters

also had four of their relay teams qualify for Provincials, all in Div. 5. Bianca Cavaliere, Jensen Cavaliere, Jamie Neill and Laura Lefebvre will be swimming the girls 200-metre freestyle relay event. The two Cavalieres and Neill will be joined by Haley Zabek in the 200-metre medley relay. Evin and Gabe Baird, along with Rahul Chhabra and Mathias Redknap will team up to swim the boys 200metre freestyle and medley relays. Ashley and Miranda Cavaliere, as well as Neill all established personal bests (PBs) at the regional meet in Kelowna, as did Otters Evi Slanzi and Ayla Redknap in the six-andunder age group, and Cruz Slanzi and Isaac Asselstine in Div. 1.

fundraiser just a few days away By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

The Merritt Centennials 2nd Annual Golf Classic at the majestic Sagebrush Golf and Sporting Club at Quilchena is just a couple of days away, and entries for the fundraising event on August 16 are filling up fast. “We have room for just a handful of more teams of four,” said the Cents’ new marketing manager Dustin Scafe earlier this week. “We’d love to hear from a few more local golfers who would like to take part. They can get in touch with me via email (marketing@merrittcenten-

nials.com), at the Cents marketing office (located across from the post office) or by calling me at 250-378-3604.” The format for the 2014 Cents Golf Classic will be similar to last year’s sold-out event. There’ll be 18 holes of golf (four-ball scramble, shotgun start) commencing at 1 p.m. at the award-winning Sagebrush links, followed by a delicious barbecue dinner served by the Centennials Booster Club, a cash bar and silent auction. “We have a lot of Cents alumni coming for the event,” Scafe said, “including Chris Forsberg, Bobby Vermette, Dave Dunnigan and Paul

Kruse, along with current Centennials Malik Kaila, Rhett Willcox and Shane Paulsen. “We’ve received a tremendous amount of support from the local business community,” Scafe said. Participants can even arrange with him for accommodation at the Sagebrush, Scafe said, or take advantage of a free courtesy bus to and from town. Silent auction prizes include an aerial tour of the Nicola Valley courtesy of Valley Helicopters, a geocaching package from Sun Country Tourism, a weekend getaway at Corbett Lake Lodge and lots of signed sports memorabilia from John Stuart Sports.

Tourond living proof you don’t ever have to slow down From Page 16 One of Tourond’s regular stomping grounds in the ’70s was the Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington. He is the only Canadian to have ever won a series title at the iconic American track. Tourond has always been a believer that you have to step out of your comfort zone if you want to improve. “You never get better if you just race in your own backyard,” he said. “You have to go places to get places.” In the late ’80s, Tourond began racing regularly again at the Langley Speedway, and that’s where he first met Irwin. “George started racing about the same time, and we both continued there for about 10 or 11 years. Then he retired and I moved on to other things. Last year, when I was racing at Agassiz, George came down into the pits and we got reacquainted. I asked him if he wanted to come down and give

me a hand. Basically, he’s been with me ever since.” Tourond considers himself lucky to have a veteran presence like Irwin at his side. “It’s hard to find people that knowledgeable and enthusiastic about [the sport],” he said. One of Tourond’s many side trips in the world of stock car racing occurred in the early 2000s. “I built myself an old-time ’36 Ford and began competing in the OTRA (Old Time Racers Association). There were about 25 of us cars and we would race all over the place,” he said. “Unfortunately, because the OTRA was based out of Victoria, it just got too expensive. The last time I raced on the Island, it cost me $600 to get there and back.” Tourond’s most recent foray into stock car racing began just last year — at the age of 76. “I jumped into my son’s street stock and took it for a ride. It was

fun. So I built the car I have now, and I’ve been racing ever since at Agassiz.” Asked why he just keeps coming back to the sport, Tourond said with a laugh, “It’s my drug of choice.” The car Tourond currently races drew a lot of attention from other drivers in Merritt on the weekend. “It’s an ’80 Camaro with an LS 5.3-litre engine straight out of a Chevy express van,” Tourand said. “It had 170,000 kilometres on it. We took the fuel injection off and put a four-barrel manifold on it with a little ‘brain

box’ to fire the ignition. There’s no distributor. It develops 310 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. It doesn’t burn oil and can rev up to 6,000 rpm at 180 degrees all day long.” Tourond and Irwin call their latest production a project car. “We’re trying to get more people to run these engines because they’re way cheaper than running a 350 [horse-power]. My engine cost me $560 with taxes. A 350 can cost you anywhere from $3,000 to $9,000.” For Tourond, the proof is in the pudding. He currently sits fifth in

the standings down in Agassiz and more than holds his own against the bigger cars. “Two weeks ago, they had a 100-lap main, and I led it for 45 laps until I lost my brakes. I still finished fifth.” Tourond hopes to be back in Merritt for the Thanksgiving weekend doubleheader, and he plans to bring his two sons who race along, too. “It’s great fun up here. I’m looking forward to it already.” The August long weekend’s racing saw large, competitive fields in all four classes with

plenty of out-of-town cars and drivers. In the four-cylinder Bomber division, Lytton’s young Lloyd Morris continued to demonstrate skills beyond his years in posting the fastest time each day and winning a pair of races on Saturday. Sunday, it was Pinantan Lake’s Tom Fowler who owned the podium, taking all three events. In the Bomber six and eight-cylinder class, locals Brad Gillis and Bill Fader continued their season-long battle — Gillis winning four times and Fader taking the other two. The nine-car Street category was the most

competitive it’s been all season. In addition to Tourond’s two wins, victories went to John Ashley from Kamloops and Penticton’s Warren Hubick. Finally, in the alwaysintense Hobby class, Pemberton’s Kirk Frost was the big winner taking two checkered flags, followed by Damien Lindberg, Brad MacKay, Larry Ruttan, Jake Mills, Amy Parsons and Grant Powers – all with one win apiece. The next racing date at the Merritt Speedway is on Saturday, August 23. Time trials start at 5 p.m. and racing at 6 p.m.

Kamloops golfers just love playing in Merritt Beauchamp wins his fifth men’s open title at Merritt Golf & Country Club By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

What is it about playing in the Nicola Valley that suits Kamloopsian golfers to a tee? Just one month after Eagle Point’s Karen Mair-Valin pulled off a three-peat at the Merritt Golf and Country Club’s Coquihalla Ladies Open, defending champion Len Beauchamp from Sun Rivers made it two in a row at the Coyote Collision Men’s Open event on the weekend. A scratch handicapper, Beauchamp now tops the list of all-time Merritt men’s open winners with five titles dating back to 2002. That’s one more than Penticton’s Ovi Lepine who won on four occasions (including three in succession) beginning in 1989. In warm, humid conditions, the 50-yearold Beauchamp shot a solid second-round score of four-under-par 68 on Sunday to post a 36-hole low-gross total of 138 — good for a seven-stroke victory over David Coldwell from Lillooet, the net runnerup for the second time in as many years. Beauchamp’s winning score this year was just one shy of his record-setting total of 137 — set last year when he opened with a blistering round of 66 on day one of the tournament. “Things were a little different this time around,” Beauchamp said in comparing his most recent pair of victories. “Last year, I started strong and basically just played not to lose on the second day. This year was a struggle all the way. I didn’t feel comfortable all weekend. I haven’t been playing as much as I usually do, and my ball strike hasn’t been that good. My putter has really bailed me out.” Beauchamp’s approach game was none too shabby at times on the weekend, too. On the final hole

of the tournament, his drive clipped the trees on the right side of the fairway, leaving his ball in the rough. An exquisite iron shot that found the left side of the green was followed by an equally-impressive 15-foot putt for birdie and a lock on yet another men’s open title. All in a day’s work for Beauchamp, an avid sportsman who prefers to wheel his golf bag around a course rather than drive a cart — even on the hottest of days. In addition to finishing second low net for the second year in a row, Coldwell also had to settle for the runnerup position in the low gross competition, losing to Mission’s Kent Gibson on a complicated retrogression (count back). Gibson, for his part, played out of his mind. The 12-handicapper shot rounds of 77 and 78 on a weekend that saw the greens run hard and fast. “I was pretty happy with the result,” Gibson said. “It was the best two rounds I’ve played in probably four years.” Gibson went on to explain that major back surgery in October of 2011 knocked him out of the game he loves for over 18 months. “I couldn’t even walk for the first three months,” he said, “and couldn’t do anything for a year and a half.” Gibson is one of a strong contingent of golfers from Mission who make the MGCC men’s open a regular stop on their golfing schedule. “I love the course in Merritt,” Gibson said. “The first four holes, you can just blast away. The next five, you really have to get down to business.” Third low net on the weekend was Merritt’s Adrian Reynoldson with a 146 total, one better than club mate Curtis Sloan at 147. “It was hard work out there,” Reynoldson said immediately following the conclusion of his

The wily veteran ran his third shot on the par-five fourth hole across the golf course parking lot, past the gazebo and club house to a sliver of turf on the back side of the building. North American Indigenous Games: an experience of a lifetime By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

For seven aboriginal youth of the Nicola Valley, their participation in the 2014 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) will be something they will never forget. The seven – Jaime Blankinship, Thomas Manuel-Hanuse, Sunshine O’Donovan, Dakota Grismer-Voght, Payikeesik Beatty-Smith, Denny Thomas and Nathan Tom – were part of the 500-member Team BC that competed in this year’s NAIG championships from July 20 to 27 in Regina, Sask. All told, over 3,500 young athletes from all over North America took part in this year’s Games, which saw competition in 15 different sports. The North American Indigenous Games have been held intermittently since 1990. The multisport spectacle promotes and encourages the cultural, spiritual and traditional values of First Nations people. The theme of the 2014 NAIG was ‘Raising the Bar.’ After seven days of competition, British Columbia emerged as the overall champions with 160 medals, including 63 gold. Saskatchewan was a close second with 159 medals. B.C. also won the ‘team spirit’ award.

Archery For 19-year-old Jaime Blankinship, Regina was her second trip to the North American Indigenous Games for archery. She competed six years ago in Cowichan on Vancouver Island – at the tender age of 13. Blankinship was born and raised in the Nicola Valley, although she spent most of her high school years in Vancouver and Victoria while her mom pursued two post-secondary degrees. Today, Blankinship resides in Vancouver. She is about to begin her second year of English studies at Vancouver Community College with the aim of someday becoming a teacher.

The Lower Nicola Indian Band member first took up archery in 2007 at the age of 12. “My mom was always trying to get both my sister and I into new and different things. I tried archery once and loved it. I was hooked,” she said. When the family moved to Port Coquitlam, Blankinship joined the Burke Mountain Archery Club. She continues to be a member to this day. “Archery just grounds me, and makes me feel whole as a person,” she said. “It takes me away from the rest of my daily life – my work and my studies. It’s a peaceful place. Your body and mind need to be so relaxed.” “Archery has made such a difference in her life,” said Jennie Blankinship, Jaime’s mother. When she first started archery, Blankinship tried a traditional ‘bare’ bow and loved it. She’s never switched to the more intricate and technical

compound bows that are now available on the market. The simplicity of the traditional bow is what appeals to her. “There are so many levels in the sport, and you constantly set each new level as a goal. It’s always new and challenging. That’s what I love – the challenge.” Blankinship did not medal in Regina, but still enjoyed every minute of her experience. “Even though I didn’t win, I had a good meet and made lots of friends – from B.C. and from other provinces.” Asked about her future in archery, Blankinship said, “I want to compete until I can’t pick up a bow anymore.”

Lacrosse A pair of 16-year-olds from the Nicola Valley – Dakota Grismer-Voght and Payikeesik BeattySmith – were members of the B.C. U16 boy’s box lacrosse team that competed in Regina. Both boys had their challenges in getting to

Regina. Beatty-Smith had injured his hand in the final game of league playoffs in June and was only cleared to play for Team BC the week of the Games. Grismer-Voght had to endure a 17-hour car ride from Nanaimo (where he played in the B.C. Summer Games). He missed the opening ceremonies and Team BC’s first game against New York, but was good to go the rest of the way. Team BC won their second round robin game, 14-1 over Alberta, but lost in the semifinals to Ontario, 8-5, and to Manitoba, 13-10, in the battle for the bronze medal. “I think that if our team played to its potential, we could have won the bronze medal, and maybe even competed for the gold,” GrismerVoght said. “Because the Games were the first time we were all playing together, it took us a while to get dialed in.” Grismer-Voght and Beatty-Smith loved their time in Regina – especially the opening ceremonies at Mosaic Stadium, home of the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, and the cultural village located at the University of Regina. “My favorite part was the trading at the end,” said Beatty-Smith. “You got to meet so many people, and trade for different things. I managed to get a team jersey from the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) of New York and one from Team EDN (Eastern Door and North). It was pretty cool.”

Riflery Between them, the Nicola Valley’s two riflery

representatives – 14-yearold Sunshine O’Donovan and 18-year-old Thomas Manuel-Hanuse brought home no fewer than six medals from Regina. Competing in the U16 female division of .22 rifle, O’Donovan won silver in the prone position and bronze medals in three-position (prone, kneeling, standing) and in combined. “I was very happy with my scores,” she said. “Two of them were personal bests – the 189 out of 200 on one target in the prone position, and the 556 out of a possible 600 total score for prone.” Manuel-Hanuse also set some PBs en route to winning a silver and two bronze medals of his own in the U19 male division. “My day one score in three-position, 553 out of 600, was the best I’ve ever done,” he said. “I was actually in first place after the first day, but had to settle for second at the end of the competition.” O’Donovan felt inspired the moment she arrived at Vancouver airport for the Team BC charter flight to Regina. “I could feel the buzz in the air. It was so great to be there with all these aboriginal athletes who were excited about their sport.” One of the highlights of the Games for O’Donovan was the weather that hit Regina on the third day of competition. “There was a severe storm warning and the possibility of a tornado,” she said. “Some people even said they could see the tornado forming. There was heavy rain, high winds and even hail the size of golf balls. At the cultural village, a lot of the merchandise tents

STRAIGHT SHOOTERS Thomas Manuel-Hanuse (left) and Sunshine O’Donovan were multiple-medal winners in rifle shooting at the 2014 NAIG. Photos submitted

were blown down and away, but the beautiful traditional teepees that had been set up withstood the weather perfectly – probably because of their shape.” O’Donovan intends to continue her training with the Kamloops Target Sports Association. She has her eye set on the Richmond Hibernation Match in November, and the provincial championships next spring. Manuel-Hanuse is uncertain he will continue with competitive shooting. The high school graduate and avid hunter is planning to work for his uncle in Grande Prairie this coming year, then enroll in the resource management program at the University of Vancouver Island with the aim of becoming a conservation

officer.

Softball Denny Thomas and Nathan Tom, both 15, were members of Team BC’s U16 male softball team in Regina. Dallas Lindley was also scheduled to participate but broke his leg playing high school rugby in the spring. With just two tournaments under their belts prior to NAIG, the B.C. team was relatively inexperienced. It managed to win two games — 21-14 over Team EDN and 7-0 against Ontario — to finish fifth overall. “I thought that we did great considering we were playing for the first time as a complete team,” Thomas said. “I really enjoyed playing for Team BC.”
