Putting this information in context, I compared the amount of candidates for both mayor and council members and have seen that there are more candidates for these positions now than there was back in 2018. Candidates for council have increased to seven more candidates from the previous elections’ 11 and mayoral candidates have added one more candidate as well.

Justin Jepsen: There are a number of chal lenges facing our School District as we move forward into the next 4 years. Some of the challenges I can see are:

“There’s a lot of garlic growers out here, and a man by the name of Pete Ratzlaff used to have the festival in his backyard, but it got too big,” said Karen Knapp, one of the organizers of the fes tival.“He came to us and asked if we could start having it in the park, which we did of course. Any proceeds from the festival and the Lower Nicola concession go towards ensuring that Lower Nicola’s community hall stays open.”

This year’s festival, similar to previous years, will have live music, food and prod uct vendors, a concession, a tractor pull competition, and classic cars on display.

The Garlic Festival has been a Lower Nicola and Merritt community staple for years, outgrowing its original home in the backyard of its organizers home and now setting up annually at Smith Pioneer Park. Garlic has long united the small unin corporated community, and grows in the gardens of many Lower Nicola residents, according to festival organizers.

the past two years saw organizers put the Garlic Festival on hold as a precaution for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lower Nicola Community Association took over the event upon Ratzlaff’s passing, hoping to continue the community gathering and keep the tradi tion alive. The event takes place annually at Smith Pioneer Park, a small TNRD community park on Aberdeen Road. It has happened annually for decades, but

“It’s good because it’s really the only thing Lower Nicola has as a commu nity event. It’s nice to bring the commu nity back to Smith Pioneer Park,” added Knapp.“There’s a huge variety of vendors, and some of them are from out of town so you get some unique ones in there. Every dollar spent at a local business and every hour spent volunteering with a non-profit helps our community thrive. As the paper of record in the Nicola Valley since 1905, the Merritt Herald is proud to play a role in our local economy, by promoting the businesses, organizations and people who call this place home.

to grow, with Merrittonians eager to cast a ballot for their favourite mechanic, salesperson or volunteer organization.

We’ve been honoured for the last few years to be able to hand out People’s Choice awards to local businesses and organizations. We continue to listen to our readers and have gone from sixtytwo certificates in the first year to seventy-eight this year, many of them now proudly on display in offices and stores around town. Since the first year public interest in the program has only continued

To receive a vote is an indication that a business is making a connection in the community — and it is the sum of those connections that make our city a fantastic place to live.

And we must commend Herald readers — not only for their excellent selections — but for taking the time to vote, online or through our print edition. Without their participation, this program would not be possible.

We look forward to toasting the best of the best in Merritt for years to come.

Congratulations to all the recipients of a Merritt Herald People’s Choice award. This marks the fifth year the Herald has asked our readers to pick the best of the best in Merritt — so this year’s recipients are the newest members of an exclusive club.To be recognized with a People’s Choice award is an indication of excellence in our community. The awards are voted on by the locals who shop, work and play in the Nicola Valley — the people who know this place as well as anyone.

The ballots are in, the people have Cheersspoken.to

A humble beginning started for TLC over 29 years and has grown experientially since then TLC prides themselves in the work they do They look at every project as a project they would do for themselves, its like leaving their personal fingerprint. Every project is a legacy they are leaving behind whether that be a work project for your back yard or a community project like the Lower Nicola Canford School Tranquility Pond, Merritt Secondary School Zen Garden on YouTube or the Smith Pioneer Park entry way They take pride in their work and know that it needs to stand the test of time, therefore, they make sure their work is done with love and high quality work

defending murder cases. He practiced for years, eventually being appointed District Judge for the Cariboo, a position he held until his retirement in 1960.

“It’s a pretty big honour, especially for a community that’s so deeply rooted in western culture,” said Cameron Bridge, manager of the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives.

Castilou is one of the few people to hold a golden key to the City of Merritt, an honour that was bestowed upon him in 1938 by then Mayor Allan Collett. Hundreds watched as Collett handed Castilou the key, a tradition used to show trust and honour, on the deck lining downtown Merritt’s Coldwater Hotel. Said to be remembered for his booming voice, he utilized it as Merritt’s first rodeo announcer in 1934 without the aid of a loudspeaker or microphone. The cowboy judge was also a family man, with him and wife Mintie having three children and nine grandchildren. Castilou died in 1967, at the age of Castilou’s71.work defending under represented First Nations clients, his pro bono work, and his avid love of com munity and culture led the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame to select him as one of their 2022 inductees. When they tried a kayaking skills camp last year, twins Gwen and Charlie Storry were only looking for a summer activity. What they did not realize was how the sport would resonate with them. Fast for ward a year later and the twins are now heavily involved in kayaking, participating in different competitions and looking to see how far they can go with the sport.

“There are many things that these ath letes need to learn at a young level: how to balance new boats, proper technique, how to work as a team in the boats and work to get results,” said KCKC head coach, Stanislav Marek. The twins now look to participate in KCKC’s winter training, and will be back on their boats in the spring season.

“Kayaking is different than a lot of other more common sports,” said Charlie Storry. “You compete against yourself and other clubs. Some of the races you have other people in your boat, so you need to have very good concentration to stay in sync with your team. I like challenging myself and seeing myself progress every week.”The 13-year old siblings are multi-sport athletes playing sports such as volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, and hockey.

This is the first time we’ve done it full-time without hav ing our own training competing on the side.”The figure skating seminar at the NVMA was open to Jr. Academy, Jr. STAR, and STARskaters, as well as coaches looking to add to their teaching repertoire.“Sucha surreal experience,” exclaimed NVSC Head Coach Diana Lorenz. “To learn technique and speak directly to an Olympian who has skated and competed with the best in the world, there is noth ing like Lorenzit.”added that the coaching and praises coming from these Olympians are a huge “confidence booster” to the kids in the“Weseminar.were all nervous getting out on the ice together, but that quickly subsided and it was a fun & amazing experience for all who Afterparticipated.”concludingtheir seminar in Merritt, Moore-Towers and Marinaro are headed to Mission for the next stop of their B.C. trip.

Olympic level talent was on the ice at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena this past weekend as Team Canada’s figure skating pair ran their skate seminar in col laboration with the Nicola Valley Skate Club. This clinic is part of a B.C. tour that Moore-Towers and Marinaro are on, teaching kids from the province tech niques and tips that they have developed throughout their skating career.

It is not too often that the Nicola Valley is visited by notable figures in the world of figure skating. However, olympic skaters, Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro ran their skating seminar for kids and coaches on Sunday, September 18. The seminar allowed skat ers to receive instruction from competitors with experience as recent as the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The pair represented Canada in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games held in Beijing, China last February. The pair also represented the country in the 2018 games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
