The Liberal Arts building, the oldest building on campus, is under renovation for use as a location for the new Creative Technologies and Experiences course, PLAY. The course will promote collaboration, working with new technologies, and creative projects, and requires a space that makes this possible.

The Institute for Sustainable Human Centered Design From Collaboration to Concentration. This statement drives the layout and components of the space, and reflects on what it means to be an Institute for Sustainable Human Centered Design. Before entering any concentration space, such as an office or classroom, students and faculty move through one or both of the collaborative work spaces- one for faculty, and the other for students entering or leaving class. This encourages additional casual interactions and directs the movement of people, allowing for a welcoming and busy academic space. The students’ collaborative workspace, specifically the study booth, also serves as a datum for the space due to its size and specialized function. The creation of diverse collaborative touchdown spaces tailors to the diverse needs of students; everyone focuses and learns differently. The workspace was created with the inhabitants in mind, and takes into account ergonomics and human proportions through the spacing and various sizes and heights of the work stations. There is a variety of spaces to reflect the variety of learning styles. The main path of travel from the waiting area to the students’ collaborative workspace acts as a central axis through the space; all destinations extend off this path. It is the primary area for interaction between students and faculty as well, and creates a sense of unity among the users.

Brainstorm diagrams from the beginning of the process illustrate the development of the layout based on the concept statement, and how to best represent it in the built environment. The set of diagrams depict the final set up of the space, as well as the flow between designated areas within the whole.

The faculty break area leads into the open faculty work space. The original brick was maintained, along with the original floors, in an effort to make a sustainable material choice as well as respect the original structure of the building. Low VOC paints and floor stain were used to touch up the materials and maintain their condition.

The study booth was designed as a feature piece for the use of both individuals or small group collaboration. The booths replaced a load bearing wall, bringing usable space into an area that was previously a hallway. They are placed across from large windows, providing natural light to enhance wellbeing and focus. Pendant lighting that can be turned on and off was placed in each booth for evening use as well. Each booth is lined with grey acoustic paneling and blue cushioned bench seating to reduce noise transfer. The use of blue and grey promotes focus, meditation, and relaxation.

Everyone studies differently. Some need the hum of background noise, others want a comfy place to read, and some need complete silence. The touchdown spaces in the students’ collaborative space were picked in order to tailor to the diverse needs of those that use the space. The collaborative workspace that leads into the classroom provides students with multiple types of touchdown spaces to work independently, or with other students on their way to and from class. Traditional tables, two study booths, a standing table, and soft seating are available.

Three of four touchdown spaces are seen in section 1, as well as the transition from collaborative space to classroom. Section View 1 NTS

The five spaces within the whole all provide varying degrees of enclosure for the inhabitants. The main space extends the full height of the volume and serves as a starting point; from here, movement through the largest space reveals four smaller spaces. While the space is on the monumental scale, the more secluded areas also allow for a more intimate space within the whole. This transition from solely public to private spaces within a single structure creates a dynamic experience for inhabitants. No two areas are defined in the same way; the largest space finds boundaries in the start of the other four spaces. Another is raised above and accessible only by stairs, a third separated by two doorways and four walls. The remaining two have opposite slanted ceilings at 45 degrees. The reversed angle of the ceilings implies a vertical plane, which gives each space its own feel. Soft blue and grey hues are employed in the rendering to create a quiet, calm, soothing atmosphere. These tones are used in every space to show the continuation of the feel regardless of the location in the structure.
