Prana is an observation terrace and yoga platform project that is designed for Sarıtepe Campus of Boğaziçi University. Prana is located between seashore and grass field, in the transition area between different elevations. This project expands two sides by following topography. We expanded to these two sides by concerning the topography. In design process, we decided to design masonry timber terrace, like a bird nest structures. Moreover, we created some axes for the continuity of the design, axes are the imaginary connections between two sides. In construction process, we used 5x10 and 5x15 timber profiles for the whole structure and 10x10 timber profiles for foundation. In foundation, we created the stability with sand, water and pressure to sand. We used string beams and nested timber profiles to create shadows. Furthermore, we created a deck, a smooth platform for yoga in one side of Prana. You can experience the sunrise and the sunset while doing yoga. This yoga platform was designed by concerning the axes of an observation terrace. Prana is a yoga term that means breathing. We tried to leave a breath to Boğaziçi University.

Layered layout system of the building takes attention ever since we enter the main door. The huge box above you makes you thinking about your own scale inside the whole building however through the columns there are bamboo like strips-reference to japanaese forest- that leads you to main circulation area which connected to the other blocks, the ďŹ rst one has library, a working area, a cafe and an art studio. When you pass a narrow corridor you are entering a huge space with different working areas at the end of the space there is a door which opens to the terrace like place with cafe and sitting units, and on the upper level there is an art workshop area for japanese calligraphy and paper marbling.

Japanese Culture has one of the most widest historical and artistic background through whole past and present. In my project, I mostly influenced by their traditional Japanese houses’ and zen gardens. Natural timber materials and furnitures are therefore to give war atmosphere with a mixture of marble stones. In some parts we can also see the existing brick walls and ornaments of the Salt Beyoğlu.

İŞARET/Tattoo Studio

Project Year: 2019 Project Member: Merve Sandıkcı Project Manager: Cansın Yılmaz Location: Atatürk Oto Sanayi, Maslak/İstanbul

Isaret;a mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or process, e.g.

Owners

AtatĂźrk Oto Sanayi is very old settlement in Maslak but today with the urbanization It stays at very strategic point in terms of transportation. Thus, my design idea about this selected area is to create a tattoo studio. As we know, most of the tattoo studios in Turkey or foreign countries have dark and gloomy atmosphere so that my aim was to change this sense. I chose mostly pastel tones and more minimalist furnitures to create more modest atmosphere.

Furniture Design/KRökt

alternative design for IKEA

Project Year: 2020 Project Member: Merve Sandıkcı Project Manager: Cemal Çobanoğlu

Installation steps

The chair has made out of waste massive timber material like in the same approach with IKEA.

Connection detail under the chair

Joints’ detail

The aim of the project was to create new alternative design for IKEA, according to IKEA’s design approach most regarded function of this chair is to be dismountable when it doesn’t needed. Krökt means crooked in English, so that the name comes from the form of the chair because, chair has same symmetry yet non-equilateral timber elements with same manner but their positions and measures changing due to their part in the whole chair.

The furniture is designed for the rough surfaces in FADA(design studio). Also sometimes students stay at school for a night and they need a place where they can sleep over. There are vacuums underneath the furniture so it can be places to any kind of rough surfaces. It can be also fold by bending the connection points.

Entrance

In my project, I designed the building according to axis of users. Arch-shaped settlement is dominant in each design elements. There are two entrances to take people inside and those ones are the most efficient used. Building’s old design was have a parking lot but I turned them into my exhibition area and create a chilling area at the terrace part.

Mimosa/Ceramic Design Project Year: 2020 Project Manager: Merve Sandıkcı

What is communication? Is it only between human? Mimosa pudica (from Latin: pudica "shy, bashful or shrinking"; also called sensitive plant, sleepy plant, action plant, shameplant is a creeping annual or perennial owering plant of the pea/legume family Fabaceae and Magnoliopsida taxon, often grown for its curiosity value: the compound leaves fold inward and droop when touched or shaken, defending themselves from harm, and re-open a few minutes later.
