Vintage silver overlay women’s Kokopelli rings Welcome To
Mesaverdesouthwest.com
This Hopi Women’s Ring is handcrafted with Sterling Silver. This Native American Jewelry is very traditional in shape, design, and technique. This technique is known as Hopi “Overlay”. It utilizes two sheets of silver, laid one on top of the other. The artist etches the design, in this particular piece a Kokopelli, onto the bottom piece, and then cuts the top sheet to fit perfectly on top of it. Then the two are soldered together and sanded down into the end product. It is a process that takes years to perfect, such as seen in this piece! The Kokopelli embodies the true American Southwest, dating back to over 3,000 years ago when the first petroglyphs were carved. He is distinguished by his hunchback, dancing pose and flute and is also
the
only
anthropomorphic
petroglyph to have an identity.
The zuni inlay rings name Kokopelli is derived from the Zuni name for god (Koko) and the Indian name for Desert Robber
Fly
(Pelli).
The
Kokopelli is known as the fertility god, prankster, healer and story teller. He is a prehistoric
deity
with
an
appealing and timeless quality that fascinates everyone!
