Hello readers! Thank you for purchasing your very own 2017-2018 yearbook. Many long days, late nights, and SD cards were filled with everything yearbook related, and the entire yearbook committee is definitely happy to see that our hard work was not in vain. This school year has definitely been one for the (year)books! Whether it was Carmel winning Sports Day, or a student’s first performance on stage, I’m sure a lot of us can say that this year has been filled with surprises and growth; both personal and communal. For those who will not be joining us next September, we bid you adieu and hope this yearbook will serve as a reminder of your most cherished moments here. For our wonderful graduating classes, we send you our love and best wishes this exam period. For everyone else, we thank you for your cooperation and enthusiasm and look forward to seeing you, or someone you know again next year!

Message from the
Board Dear Hillel Family,
Reflecting on the end of another busy academic year, filled with many challenges and achievements the words that come readily to mind are community, involvement and spirit. This past year we have seen school spirit, led in large part by our students and student leaders, grow, mature and flourish. Our school teams and school events have been supported, cheered on and celebrated in school and through various forms of student communication and social media.
Joseph Matalon Chair of the Board of Governors
Community involvement has been extremely important in reviewing our School’s vision and mission, a task mandated by the Board at the beginning of the year and one which our parents, students and teachers readily and enthusiastically embraced. This level of stakeholder interest has also been witnessed in our Technology Advisory Committee which includes parents, students and teachers who are contributing to the development of our 5-year plan with a focus on ICT integration in the classroom and improving student learning outcomes. Next year marks our 50th anniversary and we are well on the road to celebrating this milestone in various ways. We have done much work in contacting our Alumni toward forming a Hillel Academy Alumni Association, which we hope will develop and become involved in the life of our school. We have a lot to be proud of as a community. As an international school boasting over 40 nationalities, our students, teachers and parents possess a range of talents which have been reflected in significant achievements in sports, academics and community involvement during the year. In the words of the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley, “clap yourselves” students, teachers and parents, for your own valuable contributions to a full and exciting year, and join us in expressing our great appreciation to the Yearbook Committee for delivering a picturesque aide-memoire which we will all cherish.
“Hillel, Hillel, our love and thanks to you. Hillel, Hillel, to you we will be true.” Nick Hazell Director of Hillel Academy HILLEL ACADEMY 2018 YEARBOOK
Principals’ Messages
Mr. Lloyd Holmes High School Principal
I believe the quote “with great power, comes great responsibility” best expresses my first year garnering the honour of High School Principal. This school year has taught me the importance of balance, and sometimes sacrifice, for what is best at the end of the day; this is a lesson I in turn hope to be able to pass onto the future generations growing, learning, and maturing here at Hillel Academy. In order to achieve this, “The Year of the Shift” mindset has been implemented; the idea behind this being that, although there are a lot of things Hillel does right, there is always room for improvement. “The Year of the Shift” is meant to fight against any complacence, settling, or compromising that one might encounter on the road to excellence. Our goal is to create students who do not settle when they know they are capable of more.
HILLEL ACADEMY 2018 YEARBOOK
In the following year I look forward to seeing continued growth towards our school motto of “learning for living”; having our students well equipped for the wide world ahead of them, and the lessons, morals, and values we have instilled within them. For both our current, and prospective students, I have to say this: enjoy your school experience whilst it is within your grasp. These years are fleeting, and full of memories and lessons to be learnt; utilise this prime time in your life to grow and equip yourself as best as you can for the path ahead of you. Thank you, both to those involved in the fruition of this yearbook, and those who have decided to purchase a copy for themselves. This book would not be possible without your hard work and support.
Lloyd Holmes
Mrs. Carolyn Lee Prep School Principal
With the continued use of the Mission Statement of our school to guide our vision, mission and values, we at Hillel Academy continue to work with our parents and our community to realise the full potential of our most prized products: our students, our future, the next generation. Hillel seeks to wholistically develop our children by providing pupils with meaningful and connected learning experiences. Our great progress made over the past decade, in various areas, is one we often take for granted, and could not be done without partnership with key stakeholders within our community. With the upcoming academic year in our sight, it is our duty to not sit back and survey the land we have conquered, but instead look forward and assess how much more we can achieve. At the start of the year we welcomed our new
students in Kingdergarten and anywhere in between to join us in being a part of Hillel History, and we thank all involved for your trusting the future generation within our safe hands. Today, more so than ever, our children face a plethora of obstacles. However, they have just as many, if not more opportunities to fulfill their individual potentials and purposes. As a family, we strive to work as a unit to confront our children’s challenges, and celebrate their successes. Thank you for all who worked assiduously to make this yearbook all that it is, your hardwork and dedication is appreciated and recognised.
Carolyn Lee

PREP SCHOOL Kindergarten-Grade 6
Student Leaders: Prep School
Head Boy & Girl Message It has been a wonderful year at Hillel Academy as Head Boy and Head Girl. Everyday life at Hillel teaches us about our motto: learning for living. In addition to learning Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies, we learn life skills to prepare us for the future. We are taught to do our best all the time and never give up. We are encouraged to use our creativity, our strengths and intelligences. Our teachers, and the overall school staff have been incredible people, working together to make each and every child reach their full potential, all whilst making the learning experience fun. We are motivated and inspired to make good choices, we have been taught to stay strong and push through any obstacle that may come our way. Our amazing director, Mr. Hazell, and passionate principal, Mrs. Lee, have contributed to making Hillel Academy a safe environment which encourages students to not only become well rounded but also encourages their own happiness. As our years of prep school are coming to a close, we are grateful for our experiences at Hillel, the friendships we have made, the relationships with our teachers and coaches are incomparable. While we sadly end this chapter, we excitedly start a new one. We will use the knowledge we have gained from Hillel Academy Prep to guide us on our journey into high school. To the Grade 6 class of 2018 we say ….To whom much has been given, much is expected…Go forth and Shine!!! Matthew James & Kayla McNally HILLEL ACADEMY 2018 YEARBOOK

Community
There is a direct correlation between children’s happiness and their intellectual growth. Building on experiences such as gratitude and kindness fosters students’ self-awareness about their ability to seek out good in their lives. Hillel students take Giving Back very seriously. Charitable events and Fun-Fundraisers are planned throughout the year - from the Water Balloon Toss, Meme Day, Goofy Pyjama Day and more, all go towards various charitable projects. Donuts and Pyjamas what combination could be better than that? One of the many Grade 6 graduating class FunFundraisers for Jamaica Association for the Deaf. They also held a backpack drive and a painting night. Some high schoolers came upon a very cool Give Back project! They built a Half pipe RAMP at Skateboard Palace. Water Balloon Toss - In line with raising money for the Mustard Seed Foundation for the elderly, Hillel students alongside staff members were able to creatively collaborate to make the day successful. With taunting remarks from the staff and retaliation by the students, it is easy to say that this event quenched the students thirst for excitement. On labour day students worked alongside the Rotary Club of Manor Park as they painted the sidewalk verge in front of the Constant Spring police station. Gr 4 student Adam, IB student Jonathan, Michelle Upstone who is the club treasurer, Allison Peart founder, Mark Thompson, chess club coach Mr Byfield and plant supervisor Mr Hyatt all took part. Hillel students and youth leaders on the KSAMC Youth Council, Matthew Fulton, Youth CEO and Rebecca Lampert, Youth Councillor of the Admiral Town Division and Project Manager, participated in a Child Month Service in honour of children who have died under tragic or violent circumstances. Blood Drive - Giving blood is scary but giving someone a chance at life is not. The big hearts of the Hillel students and parents were exposed as we saw them take the time and courage to donate. With all the strength and compassion from our Hillel family, the goal of collecting 51 bags of blood was achieved!!

High School Student Leaders Messages (Incoming & Outgoing)
Incoming Heads: Katherine Chen.....................Head Girl Bruce Ayoub..........................Head Boy Chloe Thwaites.....................Lower School Deputy Head Girl Arianna Dabdoub.................Upper School Deputy Head Girl Sahil Lalwani.........................Lower School Deputy Head Boy Maximillian Murphy............Upper School Deputy Head Boy The honor of leading our school is an irreplaceable feeling yet holds a great deal of responsibility. We have been fortunate enough to be given these positions but the value they hold depends on our actions. We intend to use our influence to facilitate the growth of our community and reform the bond in our Hillel Family. A majority of us found ourselves in the very corridors of this school and our development into leaders of Hillel is a direct result of our environment. Our experiences at this school has allowed us to blossom into individuals of character with ambitious goals and a drive that allows us to achieve them. We have been chosen due to our unique attributes that allow our team to be efficient and innovative in its actions. To quote Jay Z; “It’s the Dream Team Meets the Supreme Team” and we intend to live up to this self imposed nickname. Who we are today is not a result of the actions of one individual. We have been shaped by the multitude of teachers who continuously guide us on this journey so that we may reach our intended potential. At Hillel, we view excellence as a process not a destination and it is the individuals who hold our hands during this process who need to be commended HILLEL ACADEMY 2018 YEARBOOK
for the end result. Firstly, We would like to express our gratitude for our supervisor, Mrs. Banton Thomas, whose ability to strike a balance between responsible and open minded has allowed our ideas to flourish and will help them come into fruition in the coming year. In addition, we couldn’t forget to thank our principal, Mr. Holmes, and our form teachers; Mrs. Salmon, Mr. Martin, Mrs. Nicholson and Ms. Wright. These constants in our lives continue to influence our decisions today and will provide support throughout our tenure. The IBDP is a programme that demands a sense of balance and we know that our positions only add to the overall responsibilities. Yet still, we face this challenge head on because we know that by truly impacting our school, our home, in
a positive way will only make the diploma at the end of the journey even sweeter. Plus,is there really anything we can’t achieve with a cup of coffee and an unavoidable deadline? #LearningforLiving #DreamTeam
Outgoing Prefect Body 2018 Dear School, The past year has been one of many adventures as we have been among those selected to lead our peers through an academic year. As the saying goes, ‘with great power comes great responsibility.’ As Head Girl and Head Boy, we took on many responsibilities, in efforts to reform communications between fellow students primarily, and students and teachers. This was no small task to undertake, but we are proud to say that if our time at Hillel has taught us anything, it was to aim high. If it was not for a few special people we certainly would have gotten arrested, or worse, expelled. So we owe our gratitude to Mrs. Banton-Thomas, who served as a lighthouse in our often rocky sea of ideas. Of course we could not have done it all on our own, and we are so thankful for the constant support we had from our team of senior prefects, and of course the advising faculty. From Kengu’s constant presence in assembly, to Rhea and Sarah’s initiative with Panthers. Steven and Gisele’s charisma with sports, and Julia and Jordan’s counsel and support, many of our initiatives would not have hit the ground running as they had without their enthusiasm to fuel them. Our deputies: Abigail, Zachary, Jack and Lauren, never failed to come to every meeting and contribute positively to the discussions on how to improve the future of student life and the legacy we can leave behind. The positions of Head Boy and Head Girl are ones that demand great leadership, and we know that any of these people could have surpassed us in this regard. As such we are incredibly grateful that in spite of that
they brought their individual strengths and skills so that we could become a dynamic and cohesive prefect body. To whom much is given, much is expected. The responsibilities entrusted to us were not light and to the people who allowed us to hold them, we do not take for granted just how difficult that must have been. What we have realized is that our actions speak for themselves. We were given a year and we can honestly say we have given it our all; when we ran out of skills, we developed new ones, when we ran out of energy, we topped up our coffee mugs. We have come to realize that whether or not we achieved our goal is less important than the legacy we have left behind. With each assembly we lead, speech we made, surprises we had, meeting
we attended, or organized, we hope that you were made to feel as impacted by our presence as your Head Boy and Head Girl as we were by the opportunity which you gave us. So frankly, congratulations are in order to you as much as to ourselves, for making it through our active tenure. We will forever be grateful for this recognition and opportunity. We thank all the members of our team and student body for making us feel #blessed.

Sport and physical activity can improve learning and memory. Learners with a good memory and the ability to learn quickly have a considerable advantage which will influence almost every aspect of their experiences of education and beyond. Volleyball Within this school year, came the formation of Hillels very first boy’s volleyball team! It was a pleasure to see both the boys and girls fighting their hearts out. Equestrian A sport that encourages both physical and mental strength. Equestrian is no easy sport (but it is a whole lot of fun!) Lacrosse Lacrosse is the newest sport at Hillel Academy but easily one of the fastest growing clubs. This year both the boys and girls team competed with schools from all over the island in the National Maroon/Taino Cup and they made us proud! Table Tennis Table tennis has been one of the oldest sports at Hillel Academy, but the love of the sport has never died. This year saw the rigorous training of the table tennis team as they went of to make us proud throughout the year’s competitions. We can’t wait to watch them showcase their skills next year! Inter House Shooting Hillel is notorious for our skeet shooting skills. Our Inter-House Shooting Competition allows our talented pupils an avenue in which to represent their houses, as well as their love for skeet shooting!
7th grader Isabella Sierra, a member of the gold medal 4x50 11-12 girls freestyle relay team, represented Jamaica at Carifta 2018
Inter-House Football Our Inter-House Football is where footballers and non-footballers alike are united in a battle of the houses. A healthy sense of competition is kept as our proud pupils battle for first place!
Julian Kennedy represented Jamaica at Carifta 2018 in Waterpolo and won a silver medal.

Events International Women’s Day March 8th marked this year’s International Women’s Day. It was our pleasure to have Nicole McLaren Campbell and Karen Lloyd answer pressing questions and concerns facing men and women in society today.
Math Week Our Math Week was focused on exposing students to how math is used outside the classroom. Each grade level was assigned a different area in which mathematics is used and was required to properly display it. These creative display boards were then displayed around the school for the whole week. ‘Wah Yuh Know Bout’ Wednesdays Basketball Games Blood Drive Christmas Bake Sale Christmas Play College Fair Colour me Happy Run Evening of the Arts Heritage Day Hi-Lyte All Island Tennis

Health & Wellness Fair
From dancing to organizing to pamphlets on how to manage anxiety, this fair was dedicated to teaching and improving our students understanding on the importance of self-care. This self-care 101 day was especially important as it took place in the pivotal term where students begin to feel the pressure of end of year exams. We hope that every student was able to appreciate these self-care practices and hopefully use them for the years to come!!

The Hillel Academy
Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Our first priority: a healthy and happy community Our PTA is an collection of amazing people serving the school in various ways with the intent of making it better and more fun for our kids, and helping the school provide education in the best way we can assist. The PTA isn’t just a bunch of people working for school, it consists of a committed Executive who work closely with the school management team, an energetic and supportive group of Class Representatives who support the Executive and many, many parent volunteers who give freely of their time with only one expectation: that their support and assistance will result in a positive experience for their children! Being part of the PTA, at times, requires hard work, long hours and a whole lot of enthusiasm – these are traits that our parents have in abundance! You will never lack in friendship, chatter, laughter and just good-old-fashioned community when you participate in an event with the PTA. Our second priority: contributions for capital project investments Of course, the PTA always needs more: with very limited resources, we always need more support (in time and in money) to give more. Our goal is to give financial support to capital investment projects approved by the school’s board of directors; currently we are raising funds towards contribution to the ICT upgrade project. The ICT upgrade project will move Hillel Academy closer to the forefront of modernity in technology, starting with upgrades to the High School’s internet connectivity. We hope our efforts will make a substantial impact to an upgrade that we know will make a huge difference in our students’ capabilities to learn, research and enjoy school! We also support various other activities and events, including: ģģ ģģ ģģ ģģ ģģ

Hillel Says
Farewell
Hillel extends a heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Beverly (Frannie) Francis and Ms. Myra Blair for their outstanding years of service and dedication to the school. Ms. Francis (High School Secretary) and Ms. Blair (Library Assistant) will retire after 27 and 43 years respectively. Their tremendous contributions and endearing support truly reflect the passion that they have for the students and their commitment to the mission of the school. As such over the years they have impacted many lives positively and formed bonds and relationships that will continue in the high school. Students, teachers and parents, present and past, have many glowing stories of how Ms. Frannie has often gone beyond the call of duty to support them in one way or another as High School Secretary. In her 43 years of service Ms. Blair has seen several generations of Hillel students transition to adulthood having supported them as a teaching assistant in the Prep School or as the library assistant in the high school since 2008.
