5 Reasons Why Online Reviews Directly Impact Your Bottom Line Presented by: Tyler Brunatti Room: B303 Description: Online reviews are the new word of mouth, and shops that want to separate themselves from the competition are placing more emphasis on collecting and managing online reviews on sites like Google, Facebook. In this presentation, we will cover how online reviews improve discovery by boosting your local SEO ranking, drive traffic to your shop, and finally influence purchase decisions. We’ll also identify ways that online reviews can impact the lifetime value of your customer and how you can use feedback from reviews to improve operations and drive efficiencies.

Using Current Probes to Diagnose Driveability Dilemmas Presented by: Eric Ziegler Room: B202 Description: Inductive current probes have been around for years, even the venerable VAT40 charging/ starting systems tester had one! Current probes use induction and “clamp” around a wire which gives us a non-intrusive method of viewing current flow in a circuit. These tools are not just for checking starting and charging system anymore. Coupling these tools with the modern DSO, or lab scope, they are incredibly powerful diagnostic instruments! Current probes can be used for checking engine mechanical integrity, ignition and injection system operation, active wheel speed sensors, shorted engine sensors, parasitic draws and even for network diagnostics. Current probe tooling options and techniques will be discussed in this class. Case studies will support some interesting approaches to some unique diagnostic dilemmas. One is only limited by ones’ imagination and creativity when it comes to this affordable and often underappreciated tool.

Transmission Diagnostics for the Non-TransTech Presented by: Scott Shotton Room: B204 Description: Transmissions have been controlled by computers for a long time. As a result, transmission issues can be electrical or hydraulic/mechanical in nature. When a vehicle with a transmission issue rolls into a shop it is often “shipped” to a transmission shop. Why? A perfectly capable technician who can accurately diagnose an engine issue could tackle the transmission issue. Why lose the customer? This course outlines a logical process for attacking transmission failures. Using tools and techniques that driveability technicians already possess, we will discuss how to draw the line between an electrical problem or an internal transmission issue. Basic knowledge of automatic transmissions is a plus, but this course is geared towards non-transmission technicians.

Description: This is a 3-part class - Attendees must choose Part 1, in order to take Part 2 and so on.

Description: Over the past decade, failure data has been collected from the Illinois EPA’s emissions testing program. Although these statistics have only been gathered from Illinois, they provide a pretty good representation of the most common failures that appear around the country. Annual results show that the top three DTC’s that continually set are: catalyst codes, lean codes and EGR codes. This course will cover a wide variety of techniques that can be used do effectively diagnose these failures. Scan tools, exhaust gas analyzers, information resources and more will be used to attack these issues. Case studies for each failure are also included.

Effective Electrical Troubleshooting: Stop-Start Technologies Presented by: Peter Orlando Room: B213 Description: Many vehicles are now being engineered with Stop-Start technology. Implementing automated stop-start technology in today’s vehicles is a costeffective way to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions without affecting consumer acceptance. A Stop-Start system operates by cutting off the engine when the vehicle comes to a complete standstill, and automatically re-starts the engine when the driver releases the brake pedal. This operating strategy is often utilized in full hybrid-electric vehicles that have powerful electric systems, but is becoming more popular in non-hybrid vehicles that use traditional starter/battery configurations. We will cover manufactures using stop-start technology, dual battery and robust starter motor technologies, common components found on each system, diagnostic evaluation and repair methods and review important best service practices to handle working on vehicle’s equipped with Stop-Start systems.

Air Fuel Sensor Operation and Testing Presented by: John Thornton Room: B204

Description: Communications have been essential from the beginning of history. In the modern vehicle communications are vital in order to control the on board systems within the vehicle. The first electrical data communications was Morse Code, where on-off signals were timed to provide information that would be sent on a wire. This basic idea of on (high) - off (low) signals is still the main way on board vehicle communications send and receive communications. This class will cover how the Control Area Network (CAN) works, how to diagnose the CAN system, and how to properly repair bus problems. With many real world case studies you will learn how to quickly diagnose this advanced communication system where it counts, in your service bays.

Communication Issues, U Codes and Network Diagnostics Presented by: Eric Ziegler Room: B215 Description: Since the advent of the computer controlled car the number of modules on said car keeps growing. Networks are the central nervous system of the modern vehicle. Network communications are essential to the proper operation and performance of safety and infotainment systems. Networks also gave us the ability to program modules and enhance our diagnostic abilities exponentially. However, when there is a communication breakdown, or a module becomes non-responsive, the diagnostics can be not so straight forward. Unplugging every module one at a time can be a time consuming, and sometimes fruitless, task. To make things worse, “U” Codes often leave “you” with little direction. Decription: The profit structure of repair shops is changing. Have you every struggled with a drivability diagnosis and wondered how in the world you are going to get paid for the 8 hours your technician invested in properly identifying the root cause of the clients concern? This course is designed to help you master the skills needed when selling the invisible service solution. The most critical part of profitability for a repair shop is ensuring every segment of time is billed out and collected for every vehicle at the proper rate. You’ll learn how to price Invisible Services in a way that customers will say yes to, as well as creating value for the service provided. We’ll identify emerging profit centers that will help your shop stay profitable in the next 5 - 10 years.

Description: Most shop owners and technicians (and everybody else by the way) spend most of their worklives completing a series of tasks – very little thinking ( critical or other) ever occurs – as a result, thinkingatrophy starts to weaves its way into our daily lives. We become robotic in our actions with very little to no thinking taking place. The results of this behavior keeps us stuck in the same “rut.” The monotony of doing the same thing over and over without thought begins to takes its toll on the shop owner and his employees, and soon a sense of burn-out, fatigue and lack of passion sets in. We wonder what happened? Where did the fire go? How come I can’t seem to get a head? This session will take these questions head-on and reveal the results from people who have found their flow of smarter, more creative thinking which has lead them to the top of their fields. Based on the science and research from Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi (pronounced “cheeks sent me high”), PhD., and my own research (currently ongoing) with shop owners from all over the country.
