Ceiling style: Leave popcorn to the movies
C
By BPT
alling all DIY enthusiasts: Those popcorn ceilings have to go. They don’t get much love from homeowners or homebuyers, and they can really bring down the overall look and feel of an otherwise attractive room. Popcorn ceilings haven’t really represented stylish home design since disco was on the radio, though they’ve certainly lingered a little longer. Whether you’re interested in a fresh look for your own family or updating your home before putting it on the market, upgrading from a popcorn ceiling is a great investment. As the largest uninterrupted space in any room, the ceiling gives you a golden opportunity to add interest or infuse your personality. Mark Clement, a general contractor and blogger on MyFixItUplife, regularly advises homeowners on the best ways to create the most value and appeal in their
home. “Ceilings really do make a greater impact than people realize,” he says. “The right choice can help a room soar - but you probably won’t get that effect with a popcorn ceiling.” “New ceilings are a great update, and with today’s options, they’re incredibly easy to install yourself,” Clement says. “Stylish ceiling details really turn heads, and a new ceiling can make a dark or uninviting room feel bigger and brighter.” But, before you grab your scraper, Clement has a few words of caution about tackling popcorn ceiling removal as a DIY project. “To remove a popcorn ceiling, you have to really be committed to the task. You can certainly do it yourself, but be forewarned that it can create a gigantic mess. You’ll want to consider all of your options carefully, from removing to simply covering it up, based on your time and budget. Patience is also a factor!” If you know you want to make a
change, but you’re not sure of the best way to move forward, here are a few key factors you need to consider when addressing your popcorn ceiling(s): Stains: You can’t put lipstick on a pig. Water problems, cracks and other issues that leave blemishes on your ceiling can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you have a popcorn ceiling that makes it difficult to simply paint over. Covering or removing that ceiling allows you to fix the noticeable, distracting blemishes overhead and clear the path for a stylish upgrade. Scraping: Get ready to get messy. Popcorn ceilings don’t get enough credit for tenacity, really. Once applied, they’re not easy to remove! At best, you’ll be soaking your ceiling with water (and possibly your walls along the way) before scraping the resulting slop off with a drywall knife. At worst, the water won’t get through all of your layers of paint, and
you’ll be breaking out the heavy machinery to sand or scrape through it all, kicking up dust. It’s doable, but it’s a lengthy process and not for the faint of heart. Cover it up: The easy way to fix ugly. Don’t worry though - you can always cover up your popcorn ceiling by installing a new ceiling over the existing one. Manufacturers like Armstrong Ceilings have many options: wood planks, metal tiles or patterned panels. How-to videos show how easy it is to install a new ceiling in as little as a day. To our modern eyes, popcorn ceilings definitely look a bit stale, but the good news is you’re not stuck with them. There are a number of options to freshen up your look and turn your ceilings into the fun, festive spaces that match your true style.

Easy, inexpensive ways to block light A
By Family Features
lthough ample natural light is a feature many homeowners desire, there are plenty of reasons to manage the light streaming into your home. Whether you simply crave a different aesthetic or you’re working to correct a matter such as limited privacy or filtering damaging rays, there are various approaches you can take to block light around your home. These four tips for blocking the light coming through your windows and doors are easy DIY projects you can tackle in just a few hours to achieve more privacy and light control: Trap light with textiles. If you’ve always considered curtains an attractive but non-functional addition to your rooms, think again. Choosing the proper weight and texture for your window treatments can significantly alter the lighting when curtains are drawn. For example, combining heavier drapes and

sheer panels is a stylish approach that lets you filter without fully eliminating light. When placed on a double rod, the drapes can pull closed for more complete blockage. Seek solutions for unique situations. For glass inserts on doors, traditional coverings such as curtains or blinds are impractical; the sway of fabric or banging of blinds grows tiresome quickly. An alternative, such as Add-On Blinds for Doors, is an energy-efficient solution, helping reduce heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer, that lets you easily adjust and change the height and tilt of the slats as needed to control the amount of light and privacy you want. The blinds, an easy do-it-yourself project, snap on to the door glass frame in about 15 minutes and come in several sizes to fit various door glass sizes. They are also cordfree, making them an attractive option for households with pets and children. And because the blinds are enclosed, cleaning is as simple as washing the

exterior panel, just like you would a regular window. Filter harsh rays with window film. Although it lacks the day-to-day flexibility of other options, tinting windows or applying a window film is an effective way to significantly reduce bright light through a window. There are a wide range of options to fit your specific needs, from glare reduction and heat control to privacy and decoration. You can choose versions that allow var ying degrees of opacity in gray or dark colors, or even frosted or stained glass looks. In most cases, the film is applied from inside; the street appearance varies depending on your selection. Plant with purpose. If your preference is to leave your view unobstructed, enhance the view with strategically positioned shrubs or trees that lend a more subtle sense of privacy while blocking direct sunlight. This approach is ideal for windows and glass doors overlooking a scenic backyard with limited privacy concerns.

Green ways to clean up snow By Metro Creative Connection
A
lthough residents of chilly climates come to expect the flakes and gathering snow mounds, some people never quite get used to the cleanup involved in keeping neighborhoods safe and accessible. In March 2014, North America was covered by the third-highest amount of snow that late in the season since record keeping began in 1966, according to NOAA’s U.S. National Ice Center. Snow can begin in September and October in some northern areas and stretch on until early spring. It pays to learn the best ways to deal with snow and to incorporate some environmentally friendly strategies as well. The most eco-friendly way to remove snow is to wait until the spring thaw when it’ll melt. Unfortunately that is not practical for most people. Therefore homeowners and business owners need to look to other methods to clear drive-

ways, parking lots and sidewalks of the white stuff. • Human-powered effort. The greenest method to clearing snow is to get out the shovel or a broom and put in some hard work. Though seldom an easy task, manual power doesn’t rely on fossil fuels nor does it create emissions or loud noises that other methods of snow removal will. Plus, snow-shoveling also is the most cost-effective method of snow removal. Invest in a quality shovel and get used to angling the blade so that you’re doing more pushing than scooping and lifting. You also can use Mother Nature to your advantage. Try to clear snow early in the day, and then let the sun and any warming of the afternoon take care of melting some of the leftover thin coatings of snow. • Use an eco-friendly ice melt. The best way to break-up ice is to chop it up and clear it away. But when that isn’t plausible, use eco-friendly ice melting products instead of traditional salt or
other melts. Run-off from certain products can increase salinity in bodies of water. Salt can prevent plants from absorbing moisture and nutrients, killing grass and gardens. Plus, ice-melt products may leach heavy metals into the environment. • Electric power is better. If you need to rely on a snow blower, opt for an electric-powered model. It will be quieter than others and also the cleanest. If you can combine an electric blower with solar panels, you’ll be reducing your energy usage even further, all the while keeping a clean and safe landscape. • Contract with an environmentally friendly service. Commercial snowremoval services and landscapers can make fast work of snow removal. These companies rely on equipment that reduces emissions, use eco-friendly ice melt and outfit their plows with blades that will minimize damage to roadways and driveways. Research the options in ecofriendly snow removal companies.

Living By Libby Johnson
inda Atkins and her husband Frank looked at quite a few houses when they were transferred to Owensboro for Frank’s work almost 15 years ago, but Linda said she knew right away the house the couple have shared for the past 13 years was the one for their family. “I’d like to pick it up and take it with me,” Linda said of the modern split-level ranch, located at 4419 Wilderness Trace, that the couple is now selling due to job-related relocation. Located in the Hillcrest Oaks subdivision off Fair view Road, the
roomy home sits in a cul-de-sac on a peaceful lot with mature landscaping. The home has a new roof, new dishwasher and new hot water heater. Before the Atkins even moved in their home, the couple chose to have a wall removed to convert two choppy rooms into a spacious great room, which includes an attractive fireplace. A window seat and surrounding built-ins occupy one side of the fireplace and the other opens onto the tiled kitchen. The unified space results in an open area for a family to cook, dine, relax and simply spend time together. An elevated deck, accessible from the kitchen, extends the living space
outdoors when the Kentucky climate allows. For colder months, and more formal entertaining, a true dining room is conveniently located on the other side of the kitchen, but also within the flow of the elongated great room. Also on the street level of the home are a master bedroom with all the requisite amenities; large attached bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and stall shower, his and hers sinks and walk in closets. Two other bedrooms share a full hall bath. The lower level of this home is more than a mere basement. “It’s really set up as an in law suite,” Linda said. With a cozy family room including a fireplace (in which
the Atkins set up a pool table), a small but complete kitchen, a full bath, and two bedrooms, this area has endless possibilities. It could be a safe venue for hosting noisy teens, an apartment set up for boomerang kids, or a home office. Last but not least, the Atkins will be sad to part with the enormous amount of storage space in the home. Walk-in storage is easily accessed from the basement and a floored attic above the garage extends almost the length of the home for easy repairs and maintenance access.

Tips for first-time home buyers
B
By Metro Creative Connection
uying a home for the first time is an exciting period in a person’s life. Deciding to buy a home often indicates buyers are ready to establish firm roots in a community where they can see themselves living for years to come. The process of buying a home is rarely easy, and first-time buyers may feel over whelmed at times. Such feelings are perfectly normal and felt by first-time buyers regardless of their budgets or home preferences. But there are a few ways to make buying a home more enjoyable than it is ner ve-wracking. • Examine your finances. The first step toward buying a home has nothing to do with deciding if you prefer a craftsman- or Tudor-style home. Before you even begin your search for a home, carefully examine your finances to determine how much is coming in and how much is going out of your household each month. Figure out how much debt you are currently carr ying, be it student loan, automotive, consumer or any other types of debt. Order a credit report so you
can see how prospective lenders are likely to see you, and address any errors you find on the repor t before meeting with any lenders. Peruse past bank statements to track your spending habits, looking for areas where you might be able to scale back if need be. • Be prepared when visiting lenders. Prospective borrowers can make the home-buying process go smoothly by having all of the necessar y documentation ready when visiting potential lenders. Many mor tgage lenders will want to see some recent pay stubs (from both borrowers if buying with a spouse or partner), a couple years’ worth of W-2s and tax returns, as well as your recent bank statements. You can always call ahead and ask lenders what they need to see when applying for a loan. Having these materials ready in advance means you will spend less time at the bank and more time finding the right home for you. • Secure financing before you begin house hunting. Many first-time home buyers might not realize the benefits of securing financing before they begin looking for a home. Mortgage preapproval lets buyers know how much a bank
“Leaders in Real Estate, Leaders in the Community”
will loan them, meaning they won’t spend time looking at homes they can’t af ford. In addition, preapproval means buyers won’t lose out on their dream homes as they scramble to secure financing after making an offer. • Work with a local real estate agent. Real estate agents are an invaluable resource to home buyers and are especially valuable to those buyers who have never before purchased a home. Agents can help first-time buyers navigate the often confusing and, at times, disappointing process of buying a home. Choose an agent who is established in the area where you want to buy a home. He or she can provide information about local property taxes and schools as well as a multitude of additional issues that first-time buyers may not think of. Agents also know the lay of the land regarding home prices, which can ease firsttime buyers’ fears about overpaying for their first homes. A home is the biggest purchase many people will ever make. First-time buyers may be intimidated as they begin searching for their homes, but there are several ways to make the process go smoothly.

Building a disaster preparedness kit
N
By Family Features
atural disasters - hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and ear thquakes - can be unpredictable. That’s why organizations like the American Red Cross urge people to prepare ahead of time. You may have an emergency plan in place, so ever yone in your family knows what to do and where to go if a disaster strikes. What you may not have is a disaster preparedness kit. In the event of an emergency, there often isn’t much time to search for or stock up on supplies. You can create your own disaster preparedness kit ahead of time with some basic household items.
Weather radio
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio broadcasts continuous weather information from the nearest national weather ser vice and keeps you updated on potential weather-related issues that could arise. These radios are vital because they can keep you updated on the weather when the local news may be inaccessible due to power outages.

When disaster strikes, access to fresh, perishable foods and refrigeration may be limited, so it’s important to have nonperishable food items readily available. Such items include ready-to-eat canned foods, granola or fruit bars high in protein, dried fr uit or vegetables, nuts and low sodium crackers. If you choose to include canned items in your kit, also remember to have a manual can opener handy.

that kit is easily accessible or make sure your disaster preparedness kit has common first aid supplies in it. Basic first aid supplies should be accounted for, including adhesive bandages, compression bandages, tape, gauze, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes and rubber gloves. Pain relievers, such as aspirin, are also good to have on hand.
Flashlight and batteries
Power outages are a common result of natural disasters, and stumbling through darkness can be dan-
gerous. Be prepared with a flashlight and usable batteries. Be prepared by checking your batter y supply frequently.
Bleach
After a natural disaster, water may not be safe to drink. If water supplies are compromised and you don’t have power to boil water, you can create potable water with a few drops of unscented disinfecting bleach, such as Clorox. It is also useful to have bleach on hand for cleanup, to disinfect hard surfaces and help prevent

mold and mildew.
