Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Stars T

Arts — Jaron Scoggins

he winner of the 2016 Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award in the arts categor y is Jaron Scoggins, an Owensboro High School graduate. A first-generation musician, Scoggins’ journey into the arts began in the fifth grade when he joined his elementar y school’s band. The band has offered him the chance to develop his primar y focus in percusssion and to play with different styles of music in honor and jazz bands, the Marching Red Devils, orchestra, musician clinics

and other festivals and ensembles. His passion for the arts grew into a love for other artistic areas including the show choir and theatre. Becoming a Rose Curtain player, an International Thespian and a member of a community theatre troupe showed him how to develop characters and assist in set design. Vocal music gave him a fresh perspective. Here he was able to improve his understanding of harmonies and tonalities, as well as interact with different kinds of artists. All of the arts in which he has been

involved have demanded his dedication. From the show choir’s choreography and voice work to the physical exertion of the marching band, Scoggins has committed himself to his art. His passion will become his life’s work as a musical educator. According to Scoggins, “As a musical educator, I want to open a door to the future generation of artists, to get a head start on them learning the responsibility of being dedicated to their art form.” Scoggins is the son of Reiko Suzuki of Owensboro.

aviess County High School graduate, Lauren Laumas, is the 2016 Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award winner in English. Maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout high school, Laumas has a dedication to her education. She is thirsty for knowledge and on that quest for understanding, she been a voracious reader of such classics as “Tess of the d’Urber villes,” “Of Mice and Men” and “Wuthering Heights.” Aside from her

academic writing, literature has taught her about new cultures and ideas and given her insight into her own creative writing. From short stories to novels, Laumas has played with words to create using such elements as imager y, verse and dialogue. In contrast, her AP Literature and Language class taught her that not all writing is subjective. She has learned that writing an essay is a skill and the importance of “showing” over “telling” a stor y. The combination of all of this has

determined her dream of “mastering the ebb and flow of phrases and teaching works of art to young people.” Teaching high school English class, after earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in secondar y English education from the University of Kentucky, is the five-year plan for Laumas. In addition, getting published as an author of realistic and science fiction is on her to-do list. Laumas is the daughter of Kevin and Trudi Laumas of Owensboro.

Foreign Language — Sydney Young

S

ydney Young, a 2016 graduate of Hancock County High School, is the winner of the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award in a foreign language. Young is drawn to helping others abroad and feels that communication is vital in improving relations with other countries. Helping others is a way of life for Young. Amidst maintaining all As throughout high school, she has been an active volunteer in programs such as BuildaBed, Difference in a Day and Week of Missions. She also has completed mission trips to

S

Charleston, West Virginia and St. Louis, Missouri serving the local communities with clean-up and visits to nursing homes. Learning Spanish every year in high school, she also volunteered to teach Spanish to elementary school students. Knowing a foreign language is something she finds essential to a career abroad. For her, learning other languages helps to make discoveries about other cultures and other ways of thinking. According to her, we, as a body of American people, are shut off from the trials and tribulations other

countries face. She aspires “to help those struggling to know help exists in the world, and most of all, that there is hope.” In the fall, she will attend Morehead State University majoring in international studies and minoring in a foreign language. Hoping to learn Arabic, she wants to build upon the skills she has learned while studying Spanish to become multilingual. Her future plans also include joining the Peace Corps and serving somewhere in the Middle East. Young is the daughter of Eric and Emillie Young of Hawesville.

Math — Jonathan Barnes

onathan Barnes, a 2016 graduate of Daviess County High School, is the winner of the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award in math. Since he was a child, he has been fascinated with building and designing projects. He also has always found mathematics easily understood and interesting. Son of a CPA mother and an engineering background father, Barnes has often considered his comprehension of mathematical concepts genetic. Whatever the reasoning, he loves all things mathematical including

accounting, finance, architecture and his intended career path, engineering. While math is something in which he easily excels, it also is a favorite subject. Courses like calculus are easily grasped by him, but at times more difficult for other students. He also spends time tutoring students in math. A kinesthetic learner, Barnes learns best by performing tasks such as building projects. According to Barnes, “Engineers take mere thoughts and imagination and turn them into tangible, useful objects we use every day.” Math is the foundation

of engineering and it explains the physical sciences and the laws of nature. For Barnes, having such an in-depth understanding of math helps him in breaking down and comprehending different aspects of engineering. His main focus will be in mechanical engineering. Here he will use the laws of nature to decipher things like electromagnetics and electricity through circuits. He can then apply these laws to real-world scenarios to determine if a design will work or not. Barnes is the son of Michael and Edna Barnes of Owensboro.

Journalism — Sally Martin

ally Martin, a 2016 graduate of Apollo High School, is the winner of the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award in journalism. Martin found a love of the news her junior year of high school while taking a journalism course. She joined the AHS morning show, “Eagles Nest Live” and soon discovered several challenges – learning how to make good shots, how to create videos that are both informative and entertaining, and how to work the computer software programs. At the same time, she was learning a great deal. Beginning with the end in mind

became her mantra. Aside from her regular class time, she found herself working on stories and videos whenever she had the chance. The excitement of brainstorming new ideas for shows and videos has given Martin a sense of purpose. Yet it was not until she earned her first 100 percent on “Year in Review of 2014 at Apollo” that she determined photojournalism would be her career choice. A perfect score in this class was rare and only given for exceptional work. This grade for her was the culmination of “hard work, hours of extra work put in after school, and a

vision for a video that students and staff would not only enjoy, but be touched by.” Martin’s interest in journalism also extends into other activities in her life, including working as the student director of Apollo’s social media accounts, being a contributor for Owensboro Parent Magazine, directing and writing for Apollo’s Buckle Up commercial for the Owensboro Police Department and being the videographer for Apollo’s DanceBlue mini-marathon. The hands-on experience she has gained has given her an insight into her future self. Martin is the daughter of Elaine and Greg Martin of Owensboro.

Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Stars Science — Lucy Kurtz

O

wensboro Catholic High School graduate, Lucy Michael Kurtz, is the winner of the 2016 Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award in science. Kurtz joined the Life Science Academy her freshman year. Here she gained hands-on experience that allowed her to learn on her own time, to develop her own experimental design and to work on cancer research projects. She also participated in “Project Lead the Way,” a program that aligns high school students interested in the biotech field with the Owensboro Community & Technical College’s Discover College programs. Her

LUCY KURTZ

coursework here included Principles of Biomedical Sciences, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions and Biomedical Innovations. Along with her science interest, she also has been involved in helping in the community. Volunteer experience included working with other students taking donated healthcare supplies and food to needy clinics in Appalachia, preparing and serving food at the Daniel Pitino Homeless Shelter, teaching a Junior Achievement finance class to students at Faust Elementary School’s after-school program, and collaborating with a class on the Wendell Foster Center’s

“No R-Word Campaign.” She also participated in Academy for Young Leaders and the Owensboro Youth Council. Kurtz wants to make people’s lives better. To do this, she plans to study bioengineering at the University of Louisville’s Speed School. She envisions studying about artificial tissue growth, biological nanotechnology, orthopedics and other areas that utilize engineering with life science. She attests, “Working toward saving lives and improving the health of my neighbors will be the most gratifying experience I can imagine.” Kurtz is the daughter of John and Christine Kurtz of Owensboro.

Social Studies — Anna Caroline “A.C.”Brake

A

nna Caroline Brake, a graduate of Owensboro High School, has been awarded the 2016 Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award for social studies. She hopes to “strive to build a society based on equality and education, where intellectualism and love will always trump ignorance and hate.” Developing a love for service early in life, Brake has had a passion for helping others. Her most proud involvement has been working with the Burmese population of her school through the Co-Ed Y Club. Here, she helped students assimilate to a new way of life. A fighter for

others’ rights, she sees social studies as a means to advocate for others. She has utilized leadership positions and extracurricular activities such as the Wendell Ford Statesman Academy and the Student Co-Ed Y where she presented two bills, one about the relief funds for third-world countries, and another about refugee education in the Kentucky Education System. Interning as a GO Vote Campaign manager gave her experience working on increasing voter turnout, while an internship at the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corp. allowed her to conduct

research projects and special assignments. An Advanced Placement Scholar, Brake is currently enrolled in online courses through HarvardX and Rice University. She also is the recipient of the Ronald Reagan Student Leader Award, the Mary Lou Mobberly Social Studies Award and the Kentucky Youth Assembly Outstanding Delegate. A promoter of change, Brake hopes to start a career in politics upon graduation from college. Brake also was nominated in the English category and is the daughter of Nicholas and Candance Brake of Owensboro.

A.C. BRAKE

Academic All-Stars nominees Math Lexie LaMar

Hancock County High School graduate Lexie LaMar was nominated in the math category of the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Awards. Math is fun for LaMar. A favorite subject, she always persists at solving challenging math problems. Lexie She attests that LaMar while many of her peers might ask the teacher for help on a problem, she would work on it until she found an answer. Her persistence paid off in the form of awards for highest grade in her school for advanced geometry, advanced algebra II and AP calculus. While she plans a career in the medical field, according to LaMar, math will be useful in her future. Attending Transylvania University in the fall, she will major in biology and also will be pre-med. After this, her goal is to attend graduate school and complete a residency program. While uncertain of a definite career plan, she knows math will be an integral part of the

curriculum. According to LaMar, “Math provides the foundation for understanding rigorous courses that I’ll be taking such as chemistry, physics and biology.” LaMar is the daughter of Scott and Susan LaMar of Lewisport.

Makalya Level Makalya Level, a 2016 graduate of McLean County High School, is a math nominee for the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Awards. Success is very important to Level. Planning her future career, she has developed a strong Makalya willpower to apply Level to everything in her life in order to reach her goals. Her tenacity stands strong in her academic life. A stellar student, she has prepped herself for college by taking the most comprehensive courses, her favorites being anything math-related. With her ability to quickly understand any type of mathematical concept, according to Level, she has sailed through the “logarithms of college algebra to the arduous

the derivatives and integrals of calculus.” Her achievements include winning first place in math on the Academic Team and advancing to the Governor’s Cup regional competition for math. Her intuitive math skills have also helped her a great deal in science courses. She knows that pharmacy school will have many chemistry courses and contends that her math background will help with her college coursework. Her intent is to become a pharmacist by completing a Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas and to some day open her own pharmacy. Level is the daughter of Misty Level of Sacramento.

Cameron O’Nan Owensboro Catholic High School graduate Cameron O’Nan was nominated in the math category for the Wendell H. Ford Academic Cameron All-Star Awards. O’Nan O’Nan likes to make things much like his favorite child TV character, Bob the Builder. Focusing on one item rather than

trying to balance multiple ones, he spends time deconstructing and reassembling items, creating something new. He began doing this as a child, and now it has evolved into something much bigger and much more ambitious; for example, he has written code to automate his bedroom lights to turn off and on when he enters or exits his room. Math is an integral part of this. This subject has always come easy to him --something about the numbers just makes sense to him. This is where his interest in engineering was first developed. According to O’Nan, “the idea of being self-sufficient and handling problems on your own is what’s most appealing to me.” His dream is to graduate with a degree in engineering and work for NASA or SpaceX. Knowing both companies’ backgrounds, he is aware his journey will not be an easy one but he is prepared to succeed. O’Nan is the son of David and Dava O’Nan of Owensboro.

Yuan Bin “Ben” Jiang Yuan Bin “Ben” Jiang, a 2016 Owensboro High School graduate, was nominated in the math category of the Wendell H. Ford

Academic All-Star Awards. Jiang’s passion for math encourages him to find undiscovered patterns, create life-changing products and solve world problems. Yuan Bin “BEN” Jiang Although math has always been his hardest subject, he finds the numbers and logic behind it fascinating. Learning about patterns and relations between equations is something Jiang believes can impact the world. In algebra and geometry, he loves the accurate results and consistency, and he enjoys the analytical part of math used to better understand the world using models, data and formulas. His other passion is helping people and believes there is something mathematical that can assist people in need. Those in the U.S. living below poverty, according to Jiang, need “security, health care, education and most importantly, a path to prosperity and happiness.” He aspires to build a team and create a personal finance model using technology to help those living in poverty to flourish. Jiang is the son of Shufei Jiang and Yunhua Huang of Owensboro.

Social Studies Lindsey Hagman The Hancock County High School nominee in the social studies category for the 2016 Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Awards is graduate Lindsey Hagman. Hagman sees social studies as a way to understand how others feel. She Lindsey has been using Hagman content that she learned in social studies her whole life. According to Hagman, not only does social studies teach

about history, but also how to become a better citizen. While she loves social studies, her plan is to become a pediatric physical therapist. For her, social studies taught her that “understanding how others feel and knowing how to help are very important when becoming a physical therapist.” Always excelling in such areas as an AP Scholar or Governor’s Scholar, she plans to study biology and participate in the Honors Program at the University of Louisville in the fall. Upon completion of her graduate degree in physical therapy, she plans on working in a children’s

hospital and to some day open her own practice. Hagman is the daughter of Harold and Sherry Hagman of Hawesville.

Dimond Shelton Dimond Shelton, a 2016 graduate of Ohio County High School, was nominated in the social studies category of the Academic All-Star Awards. Shelton believes history Dimond is integral to Shelton science. In her

AP U.S. History class, she had to complete a project related to the colonial time period. Having an interest in the medical field, she chose the most common types of diseases that affected our ancestors. She also has looked at the work of Jonas Salk and saw how he created the first polio vaccine and proved that the body’s immune system builds up antibodies to disease. During this time, she realized “if there is one thing to understand about making improvements in the medical field, it is knowing the history of what has helped medicine come this far.” Research like this

gets Shelton excited about her future. Optimistic about the next phase in her life, Shelton has been accepted into the Honors College at Western Kentucky University. She wants to study biotechnology and gene manipulation so she can research the way viruses behave and mutate. Her plans are to become a family physician and to help those who are less fortunate. With her medical degree, she also wants to research HIV and to lobby for reform to make health care more affordable and available to everyone. Shelton is the daughter of William and Kathy Shelton of Cromwell.

The two formed a friendship and she found a career goal, to teach the

English language to non-English speakers. She hopes to form a bridge of understanding between people from other cultures and the English language. This love of language also prompted her to tutor a Honduran student in English, to teach Spanish to after-school elementary students and to mentor a Thai student. By teaching ELL, her plan is to show mutual respect and to help assimilate people from other cultures into our society. Postiglione is the daughter of Michael and Rhonda Postiglione of Owensboro.

Kami Simpson

Kami Simpson

Kami Simpson, a 2016 graduate of Ohio County High School, was nominated for the Wendell H.

Ford Academic All-Star Award in foreign language. When she began high school, Simpson only wanted to study Spanish for the duration of high school so she would not need to take it in college. As with learning any new language, there were several challenges in the first two years of the coursework. However, by her junior year, Simpson had developed a passion for the language and culture. She immersed herself in the language, joining the Spanish National Honor Society, teaching the language to elementar y students and co-hosting the Spanish Club after school. Her senior year she tutored peers and assisted her Spanish teacher with grading papers and designing ads for tutoring. She now sees value in being able to communicate with those whose first language is not English and believes that knowing a second language will be beneficial for any type of job she seeks. “Being bilingual gives a person that extra edge they need to stand out in hundreds of applications.” With this love of the language, her goal is to become a Spanish teacher. Simpson is the daughter of Larr y and Mar y Lou Simpson of Beaver Dam.

Miller Townsend

Fox Bratcher

Miller Townsend, an Owensboro Catholic High School graduate, was nominated for the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award in the arts category. Growing up, Townsend’s interior Miller designer/studio Townsend artist mother was a source of inspiration. According to Townsend, “From a young age, art has always kept me going, even in the hardest of times.” Her mother often kept her mind busy creating something and looking for the beautiful in all things. One of the most embedded memories she gave Townsend was that nothing is ever finished or ruined, but there always is room for improvement. Throughout the years, art has been an active motivator and something that has grounded her. Townsend will merge her love of art and business by majoring in marketing and advertising with an emphasis in branding while attending Western Kentucky University. Ohio County High School graduate Fox Bratcher was nominated for the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award in the arts category. Fox His experiences Bratcher in the arts have shaped who he is and have shown him that anything is possible. While he plans to become a chemist, art it is at the heart of his journey into science. According to Bratcher, “Art allows for many things in the world, from the documentation of events and findings to the impossibilities of the mind through drawings and paintings.” For him, art expands the mind and extends to the impossible. As a chemist, he anticipates dabbling in a bit of everything, yet it is making new compounds that fascinate him. The creation of new compounds astounds Bratcher as the reactions can be used to prevent disease and create cures. He is the son of David and Shannon Bratcher of Hartford.

Journalism Meredith Payne

Meredith Payne, a 2016 Daviess County High School graduate, was nominated for the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award in journalism. Payne says journalism is the art of telling stories. Four years of storytelling is how long she practiced that art Meredith while attending Payne DCHS. A favorite teacher, “Amber J.,” inspired her to get involved in the yearbook. So, during her freshman year, she took a pre-requisite journalism class and learned the introduction of styles and forms of photography and writing. As a sophomore, she enrolled in the yearbook staff with high hopes. Leaving a permanent mark in her school’s history and telling the stories of students who do not usually get told was a fervent motivation for

her in capturing words and images. The yearbook also allowed her to be a photographer, which meant attending many school events she normally would not have experienced. Learning about others and sharing those people’s talents through photography inspired her. During her senior year, she served as co-editor in chief of the school’s yearbook where she oversaw the design elements and color patterns of the publication. Payne hopes that her contribution to the yearbook will create memories that will “bring back nostalgic smiles to the faces of my classmates.” She is the daughter of Robert and Therese Payne of Owensboro.

Noah Thomas Hancock County High School graduate Noah Thomas was nominated for the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award journalism category. According to Thomas, “Journalism in my life has not only developed the way

I communicate but also changed the way I think.” Gathering and sharing information has become a gift for him. He no longer just passes things along but has learned to dig deeper for the whole story. Distinguishing Noah between credible Thomas and untrustworthy sources has also become a valuable skill for him. Journalism has taught him to not only research subject matter, but then compare it with multiple sources. Thomas works to prevent personal bias. Determining bias from the truthful content helps him in his own writing. He believes it is important to report on events and ideas without conveying his own opinion about the topic. In essence, journalism has taught him to be a better communicator. He also utilizes the ethics he has learned in journalism in his job

as a dietary assistant and in two online theology discussion groups. He attests that sharing accurate information in whatever realm you are in is imperative. Thomas is the son of Robert and Sandra Thomas of Hawesville.

William Litsey William Litsey, an Owensboro High School graduate, was nominated in the journalism category for the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Award. Litsey is a storyteller and plans to be one for the rest of his William life. He refuses to Litsey sit back and let forces he cannot control dictate his circumstances. He said that the most valuable truth he learned from his OHS experience is that “the more complacent we become, the more transparent

we become.” His coursework at OHS, particularly his journalism classes, has shown him how to tell stories. Litsey bases his future plans on the idea that, according to him, “The world is ours, and we have to push forward through the marsh of regularity and make a name for ourselves before we sink into uniformity.” In addition to storytelling, he has been the head web designer for www.digitaldevil. org and he has directed and edited more than 80 episodes of the OHS student news show, “DTV.” He also has worked alongside OPS central office staff to create videos including “PLTW School Visits,” “Fourth Grade Challenge,” “OMS South Book Nook,” and “OHS Adds PE Cycling.” He said he is not out to change all the world, but hopes to touch one person, to change one person’s world. Film is the medium he plans to do this. Litsey is the son of James and Lisa Litsey of Owensboro.

English Faith Henry

Faith Henry

Faith Henry, a graduate of Ohio County High School, placed second in the English category of the Wendell H. Ford Academic All-Star Awards. With a desire to help others, her family’s experiences with Down syndrome and diabetes have encouraged her

to choose biomedical engineering as a career. Math and science are an integral part of this career path, but Henry is aware that “English is a key component to my goals.” In the research world, knowing how to write proposals is essential. Her work would have to be well-written so her ideas could be approved for development

and the results could accurately be recorded. Throughout high school, she has taken an active role in English coursework, participating in advanced English courses, reading a variety of genre books and tutoring a student in English. A member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club and Eagle Excellence, Henry also has

held leadership positions and has been active in community service. After obtaining her master’s degree, she wishes to work in research and development or genetic engineering and to lead her own research team in genetics. Henry is the daughter of Robert Henry and Wendy King of Beaver Dam.
