Daviess County Lions Club fair returns for annual event A

BY LEXINGTON SOUERS

ttendees of this year’s Daviess County Lions Club Fair may recognize some new additions. Tim Bowen, 2016 Fair Chairman, said there would be a free petting zoo and camel rides included in the price of admission. “We’re tr ying to make it where the whole family can have something to do,” Bowen said. The fair will feature a variety of daily attractions like laser tag, pony rides, 4-H/FFA projects and carnival rides. The fair begins with the Charity English Horse Show on July 11 at the Fairgrounds. The following weekend, Miss Daviess County will be crowned along with her pre-teen and teen counterpar t. The pageants take place July 21 - 24. Winners from the Daviess County Lions Club Fair’s beauty

pageants and farm exhibits qualify for the Kentucky State Fair that will be from Aug. 18-28. The Firefighter’s Challenge is on July 27 in the Small Arena. Bowen said the event was a crowd favorite. Another favorite is the 4WD Truck Mud Sling held the same night in the Miles Arena. Daviess County Farm Bureau members can receive $3 of f their fair ticket on July 28. The day’s signature events are the Dir t Drag Racing event in Miles Arena and the Bear Hollow Wood Car vers. Bowen said the Battle of the Bluegrass Tractor Pull, this year on July 29-30, are among the most popular events. The Battle of the Bluegrass Pulling Series is being featured in a reality television show called “Hooked on Dir t,” set to air this fall. SEE LIONS/PAGE 3

Despite the rides, drag races and tractor pulls, Bowen said the real reason for the fair was suppor ting the Lions Club’s mission, to provide eye care and eyeglasses to those who need them. Funds from the Daviess County Lions Club Fair are donated to The Help Of fice, an agency aimed at providing “basic human physiological and emergency assistance to the poor,” according to their website. He adds that another reason is based in community obligation. “We feel like it’s something we should do for the community, for the kids to show their 4-H projects, their livestock, their FFA groups,” Bowen said. “Without the fair they wouldn’t have a place to show that.”

And show they will. The fair features beef, lamb and goat, rabbit and swine shows spread out throughout the weekend. Earlier this year, Joan Hayden, who has been a fair board member for the last five years, told the Messenger-Inquirer lots of positive changes have come to the fair. With the Tom Cur tsinger Agriculture Building and par tnerships with the Daviess County Extension Council and Daviess Fiscal Cour t, and in conjunction with grants from the Daviess County Farm Bureau, Daviess County Ag Development Fund and the Kentucky State Ag Development Fund, along with many personal donations, Hayden said the fair is improving ever y year. Tickets for the fair can be purchased at the gate. All carnival and pony rides are included in the admission fee.

Local residents set sights on Miss Daviess County title

BY MEGHANN RICHARDSON

O

n July 22, 13 women from across Daviess County will be competing in the Miss Daviess County pageant with their sights set on the crown. The annual pageant, at 7 p.m. at the Hines Center, serves as a kick-off for the six other pageants and the beginning of the annual Daviess County Lions Club Fair. Reigning Miss Daviess County, Madelyn Clark, said the pageant is a great opportunity for young women. With her experience, she said she has had the opportunity to meet many interesting people and learned a lot about confidence and public speaking skills. “It has been such an amazing year and I cannot wait to see who will be the next to get this amazing opportunity,” Clark said. Miss pageant director and a former Miss Daviess County, Bayli Boling, said girls from every area high school are competing for the crown. During the summer practices, the contestant learn a dance routine, listen to speakers from the community, including former pageant winners and get tutorials on hair, makeup and public speaking. “Throughout the summer we practice every Sunday and the girls get the chance to form genuine friendships,” she said. The young women participate in an interview, perform a dance and walk on stage, all in front of the judges. The pageant also requires contestants to have a charitable platform they are actively involved in. The winner also participates in charity events throughout the year such as Relay for Life, the CASA Art Auction and events that pertain to their platform. Miss Daviess County also rides in the Owensboro Christmas Parade. The current Miss Daviess County participated in more than 50 community events during her reign. “Pageantry can teach young women interview skills, public speaking skills, and keeps young women involved in their communities,” Boling said. “For me, pageantry lead to leadership roles in my school and community. I competed for seven years and went on to become Miss Teen Kentucky United States in 2014. I could not have achieved many of the successes I have without the skills I gained from the Daviess County Lions Club Fair Pageants.”
