Three ways to create visually striking doors BY BPT

Think of a door opening and closing. Chances are you pictured it swinging on hinges, since that’s how most doors operate. But, more homeowners are choosing other door hanging hardware for a unique look with their interior and exterior doors. If you’re looking for a way to make visitors to your home say “wow,” consider alternatives to hinged doors for an unexpected twist. “Once you’ve chosen the door that’s perfect for you, it can be hung in a number of distinctive ways,” says Brad Loveless, marketing and product development manager for Simpson Door Company. “A pocket door, sliding barn door or a pivot door can add some personality and pizzazz to your home.”

Pocket doors

Similar to closet doors hung on a track, pocket doors slide open and

closed, but disappear into the wall when closed. Popular in home offices, bathrooms and utility rooms, pocket doors save space and can make a room feel more open. Using a pocket door in place of a hinged door saves about 10 square feet of floor space, notes home improvement expert Tim Carter. Depending on the width of the opening, you can use either a single pocket door, or double pocket doors that slide into opposite walls and meet in the middle when closed. Because they don’t seal as tightly as hinged doors, pocket doors are largely limited to use inside the home, instead of as entr y doors.

Sliding barn doors

Barn doors are a bit like pocket doors in that they slide open and closed, but they’re hung on tracks that are visible. When opened, the doors are located on one side of the wall, instead of disappearing into the wall. For large openings, such

as between dining rooms and living rooms, you can even hang multiple barn doors on tracks in order to divide the spaces. A number of companies offer highend barn door track hardware, in a range of styles and colors. “People like the unexpected look of a barn door,” says John Golesh, president of door hardware manufacturer Goldberg Brothers. “They’re a great way to add a rustic, yet elegant look to your home. And with the wide variety of door hangers and handles, a barn door can complement any interior décor.” In addition to the chic look barn doors of fer, homes for sale with “barn door” in their listing sold for 13 percent more than expected and 57 days faster, according to research by Zillow Diggs.

Pivot doors

Common in ancient buildings, pivot mounted doors are virtually unseen in North American homes. For home-

owners who want an element of surprise, a pivot door is a good choice. In place of hinges or overhead sliders and tracks, pivot doors rotate open and closed around pins installed in the top and bottom of the door frame. The pins are set several inches in from the door frame, depending on the door’s size. “For high-end homes with extrawide doors, pivots are a great way to handle the additional weight, and will be unlike anything your visitors have seen before,” Loveless says. “We are making many dif ferent super-sized doors for this exact application.” Some of these doors are huge measuring up to four feet wide or mor e. As “large, simple r ectangles,” pivot doors can be designed to look like the sur rounding wall, so fit well in modern style homes, notes architect Bud Dietrich. Unlike pocket doors and barn doors, pivot doors can seal tightly to their frame when closed, so can be used as entr y doors.

Employ a chlorine bleach solution to kill any mildew and to scrub any dirt from the house. In addition, repair any cracks or imperfections. For example, if you’re painting stucco, you may have to fill in any pitting or holes. Use this opportunity to inspect caulking around windows and doors. Recaulk as needed to seal up drafty areas or those that may cause water infiltration prior to painting.

Prime and cover stains

It may be a little extra work, but apply a quality primer as the first coat to hide any imperfections, such as wood knots or discoloration from weathering. Primer provides a smooth, even surface upon which to put your paint color. Once you have applied the primer, test your paint color in a small, inconspicuous spot to see how the color looks in the daylight. You do not want to paint the entire home only to find out you dislike the color.

Try these painting techniques

Rent a paint sprayer for large surface areas. The sprayer will produce a more uniform application and is less time-consuming than painting everything with a brush or roller. Make sure you’ve chosen a high-quality paint, as the added expense is worth it if the paint lasts longer and coats more evenly. Also, if you have purchased multiple cans of paint, mix them all in one large bucket to ensure the same color; otherwise, the colors may not match perfectly. The experts at HGTV recommend working your way from top to bottom in a smooth, controlled manner, overlapping each stroke by eight inches. Trim and hard-to-reach areas should be left for brush work so you can maintain control over your tools. If you are painting areas like steps or staircases, consider adding a little fine-grain sand to the paint to improve traction, as paint can be slippery when wet. It’s a shade of beige and is called mosaic sand.” On the second floor is a bedroom with loft-like ceilings and a small alcove, perfect for a child’s reading area. The upstairs attic space is perfect for storing holiday decorations, suitcases, toys, and games. Perhaps the most unique room in the home is the sunroom, located on the first floor behind the dining area. “The sunroom is one of my favorite rooms in the house,” Josie said. “It has three sets of large windows and the patio doors have blinds that can be closed for privacy. The curtains are staying with the house; they are the perfect length and blend ver y well with the paint color. I love the look of the brick wall out here; it was originally a covered porch, but it was so hot in the summer and cold in the winter that we couldn’t enjoy it, so we had it enclosed. The sunroom has its own heating and cooling unit now, so it is temperature-controlled. There is also a ceiling fan and extra lighting. My granddaughters love to sleep out here on an inflatable mattress when they come to visit; it’s a ver y special place.” There is a lot of potential for outdoor living as well. Does the prospect of moving have you buzzing with excitement? Or are you left with worries about packing and clutter? Make a plan

Your calendar will be your best friend throughout the moving process. As soon as you know your moving date, schedule moving help and/or a truck rental.
