How to replace
ENERGY-HUNGRY
HOME APPLIANCES Home improvement projects often involve remodeling. But homeowners can improve their homes without ever picking up a hammer. Upgrading a home’s appliances with products that are more eco-friendly can add value to a home and make the home more attractive to buyers who want their homes to look good and pay dividends for the environment. The United States Department of Energy says the average American family spends about $2,200 each year for energy costs, and large, inefficient appliances no doubt contribute heavily to those expenditures. Appliances that are several years old, including refrigerators, washing machines, dr yers, and even ovens, may no longer meet the stringent energy-saving specifications required of new items. That means such appliances are negatively affecting the environment and their owners’ bottom lines. According to the Energy Star program, a refrigerator that is at least 15 years old may be consuming twice as much energy as a newer Energy Star-rated refrigerator. Even though purchasing new appliances will require a financial commitment, such items may help save money while benefitting the environment at the same time. The most energy-hungr y appliances include HVAC systems, water heater, washer and dr yer, lights electric ovens, refrigerator and tvs and its components, such as cable boxes and DVD players. If possible, turn off and unplug these appliances when not in use or when you’re gone for long periods of time. Remember, small tasks can add up to big savings.
READ THE LABEL
Familiarize yourself with the “EnergyGuide” label that appears on most appliances. This label gives consumers an idea as to how much it will cost to run the appliance, as well as how much energy the unit uses on average. Use this label to compare the different models you are considering. Choose appliances that are part of the Energy Star program, which helps consumers find products that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
DOWNGRADE TO A SMALL MODEL
Large appliances tend to consume more energy than small appliances. Scaling down the size of the appliance can reduce energy consumption. Empty nesters may no longer need a refrigerator capable of holding food for a family of four, while those who routinely dine out may find they don’t get much use out of their larger refrigerator.

LOOK FOR REBATE PROGRAMS
Rebate and recycling programs can help reduce the initial cost of purchasing new appliances. The government may offer tax incentives to those people who purchase a new, energy-efficient models.
THINK ABOUT FUTURE SALABILITY
Homeowners who do not intend to stay in their homes much longer may find energy efficient appliances make their homes more attractive to prospective buyers. Energy efficient appliances can reduce homeowners’ carbon footprints while also saving them considerable amounts of money over the life of the products.

SAFE HOMES
WITHOUT COMPROMISING STYLE
BY FAMILY FEATURES
Home accidents cause nearly 13 million injuries a year. Some simple updates to your home can help you avoid these accidents, as well as give your rooms a facelift. “People often think that home improvement projects mean a complete overhaul of a room,” said Matt Muenster, a licensed contractor, designer and HGTV and DIY Network TV host, “but there are dozens of smaller updates that people can DIY that can have a big impact on the room. It’s the subtle details that make a difference in how you use and enjoy the space.” To get your home makeover underway, try these tips from Muenster, who has teamed up with 3M, to keep your home both safe and stylish:
THE LESS CLUTTER, THE BETTER
Sometimes the bulky knife block can be an eyesore or take up too much space on small countertops. If you are looking for new and interesting ways to store sharp knives, try installing magnet strips on the backsplash in the kitchen. This will not only keep your counter clutter free, but give your kitchen some flair.
SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN
Enjoy fresh, filtered water at home without having a bulky filter attached to the faucet or the hassle of constantly refilling a pitcher. The new 3M Maximum Under Sink Water Filtration System stays out of sight while allowing high water flow from your existing faucet. The system, which is available at Lowe’s stores or Lowes.com, is easy to install using just a screwdriver, wrench and drill, and the quick-change filter lasts up to six months. Best of all, it reduces contaminants that may be in your water, including 99.3 percent of lead, as well as microbial cysts, chlorine taste and odor, sand, sediment, rust and soil. Learn more at 3M.com.
STEP IT UP
Have kids at home? Put a stepstool that slides into the toe kick beneath the sink so that your kids are able to roll it out like a drawer and step up to wash their hands. This is also great for parents who have young chefs in the house who like to help out in the kitchen.
A SOFT LANDING
If you find yourself having “butterfingers” more often than not, try putting down flooring that is made
from a soft material like cork in the working areas of the kitchen. This way, you can help prevent breakage next time something slips through your fingers.
GET A GRIP
If you are planning a bathroom remodel or simply want to make a change, choose tile with textured surfaces. This will make them less slippery under wet, bare feet. Smaller tile with more grout also helps prevent slippery surfaces.
LET THERE BE LIGHT
Whether it’s a trip to the kitchen for a midnight snack or to the bathroom in the middle of the night, toe kick LED lighting that is connected to a motion sensor can be a great nightlight that doesn’t always have to be left on. A kitchen or bathroom remodel can be big or small, but with some planning and the right tools, the projects can be accomplished using your own hands. By tackling these projects yourself, not only will you have the assurance that your home is safer without sacrificing style, but your new space will also feel extra special.

4. SELECT BUILDING MATERIALS THAT PROVIDE PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION
Passive fire protection is part of the core of the building and helps control fire by limiting its spread. One very effective form of passive fire protection is the installation of insulation. When adding or upgrading insulation, look for products made from naturally fire-resistant, inorganic materials. A favorite among builders, contractors and homeowners is a stone wool insulation called Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound, which offers fire resistance up to 2,150°F. Its melting point is higher than the temperature of a typical house
fire, which means it will stay in place longer to provide passive fire protection when every second counts, allowing more time for safe evacuation and for first responders to arrive.

ARDS W
Did you know that, according to the National Fire Protection Association, most people have a false sense of security regarding house fires, believing that they would have approximately six minutes to evacuate their home in the event of a fire? In reality, smoke and fire spread rapidly and can overcome occupants in less than three minutes. When a fire occurs, there’s no question that time is critical. The good news is there are several important steps you can take to maximize your escape time. With the following measures in place, you’ll create critical protection for what matters most — your home and family.

CRIME PREVENTION TRAINING
For example, a watch group can invite law enforcement and security experts to speak about safety measures.
VICTIM ASSISTANCE
Watch groups can provide support by helping crime victims contact the police or sheriff and local victim-assistance programs.
IMPROVING CONDITIONS
Neighborhood neglect invites crime. Organize cleanups and work with local government to get abandoned buildings and vacant lots fixed up. Neighborhood Watches don’t replace law enforcement — working with the police is important.
HOW TO START A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
• Meet with your neighbors: Share concerns about crime. • Inform the Owensboro Police Department: Call 270-687-8828 and let them know you plan to form a watch group. They can provide crime prevention information, training and Neighborhood Watch signs for public display. • Make a plan: Define your territor y, set priorities and elect officers. Divide up tasks to avoid 1 or 2 people doing all the work.
YOU CAN HELP LAW ENFORCEMENT BY LOOKING OUT FOR SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
• A vehicle making slow, repeated trips through the neighborhood
• A stranger hanging around parking lots, going door-to-door or jogging in street clothes • Unusual noises • Property being removed from a home when residents aren’t there
KNOW HOW TO REPORT YOUR SUSPICIONS
• Give the police a physical description, including sex, race and approximate size and age • A direction of travel • License plate number and state • Make, model and color of vehicle
YOUR WATCH GROUP CAN TARGET SPECIFIC PROBLEMS
• Drug dealers: Report drug activity — never confront anyone on your own. Organize anti-drug rallies. • Vandalism: Painting over graffiti right away. • Break-ins: Consider installing more lighting around homes and areas of high vandalism. Promote home security inspections. Step up efforts to keep an eye on each other’s homes. • Violence against children: Choose “safe houses” on each block where children can go if they are afraid. Have “block parents” — trusted adults at home during the day who can watch out for children on their blocks. • Assault: Offer escorts for the elderly or others when they have to walk alone in the neighborhood. Cut back trees and shrubs where attackers could hide. Push for improved street lighting. • Family Violence: Neighbors should contact a family violence hotline or local crisis shelter about the best way to report family abuse.
