P E R S O N A L S PA C E STORY BY JODI KEEN MESSENGER-INQUIRER
PHOTOS COURTESY OF SHON AND MOLLY SHOURDS
Tiny houses have caused giant waves in the real estate market since their popularity soared after the Great Recession. Offering an alternative to a 1,000-plussquare-foot home rooted in one place, tiny homes are often mobile and customized, leave a smaller environmental footprint, and significantly decrease the overall costs associated with homeownership. All of this appeals to Shon and Molly Shourds. The Rockport, Indiana, couple love to travel but also crave the comforts of home, and a few years ago, they began plotting how to combine the two. “I love to travel, but I also love to have our animals with me,” Molly says. “It’s comforting to know that you get to see the world and then have your home there. You have your own bed and your own space that you’ve created.” “Our goal is to travel and end up finding places that we want to settle down,” Shon says. “We plan to build a tiny home eventually, but we wanted an easier way to maneuver around than hauling a trailer.” The couple began researching RVs and vans, and even acquired the latter and built it out about 80 percent before realizing its small size wouldn’t meet their space needs (they have four dogs and a cat) or their design preferences (vans and RVs are primarily filled out with fabricated wood and fiberglass). They also limit overall layout design. So the Shourds switched their sights to school buses, which offer a metal structure that’s already made to carry significant weight and has much more room for a customized floor plan. In March 2019, they found a bus for sale nearby via Facebook Marketplace. After assessing its many good qualities — among them its low mileage and new tires and starter batteries — the Shourds bought the bus that day. Naming it Beatrice, they set to work transforming it into the tiny home of their dreams. “With a bus, you can start from literally nothing,” Molly says. “We really wanted to take on the challenge of doing it ourselves and make it our own. We get the satisfaction of doing it 100 percent ourselves.” And do it themselves, they have. All of the renovation work — the framing,
A New Take on A Tiny House
painting, staining, measuring, installing, researching, wiring, plumbing, tiling, insulating, hammering, sawing and even the sewing of dinette seat cushions — has been performed by the Shourds. They started by ripping out the bus’ seats, flooring, walls and ceiling — the latter alone was held in place by nearly 700 rivets — and replacing some of the windows with sheet metal. Then came sealing the roof with a wet patch product whose pliability allows it to flex with the roof. Off came some of the extra exterior lights and decals, as well as unnecessarily switches. In went a backup camera, toggle switches with USB chargers, and solar panels. Shon and Molly have combed through YouTube tutorials and blogs to help them during their “skoolie” project and have learned to heavily plan and prepare in order to avoid redoing work. Designing a skoolie forced the Shourds to think smart during renovations. For example, a $1,000 composting toilet may seem like an extravagance, but it allows the couple to compost and safely dispose of waste anywhere they are. Pennies were used to plug holes in the floor

because they’re inexpensive — 100 pennies equal $1, whereas tiny metal plates can cost $2 a piece — and solid. When researching heating and supplemental fuel, the Shourds opted to plumb the bus’ existing diesel tank and install an external power outlet for emergencies. They kept the bus’ hatches for ventilation, roof access and emergency exits. The water heater and water pump will both use propane on demand. A three-panel wall closet contains the refrigerator, electrical system and space for clothes. Storage is tucked into every available nook under the refrigerator, bed and couch. The Shourds wanted a traditional front door for their nontraditional home, but they crafted it out of
solid wood and windshield glass so it can withstand the rigors of being on the road. And since headroom is lost as you move closer to the walls, the Shourds placed their showerhead away from the wall so users could benefit from the ceiling’s full 6-foot, 3-inch clearance. Perhaps the biggest surprise is just how roomy Beatrice is. A skoolie one-ups a traditional tiny house by immediately offering more elbow room. “Once you clear it out, it is massive; it’s 35 feet long, seven-and-a-half feet wide, of all this space,” Shon says, while Molly adds, “You don’t feel cramped or claustrophobic at all.” A completely renovated skoolie can be had for between $80,000-$100,000, but the Shourds estimate that their own handiwork will have saved them between $40,000-$70,000 by the time Beatrice is finished. The couple are on track to meet their three-year renovation timeline by next spring. “It’s hard to get excited when you don’t see the progress,” Shon says. “Now that we see it starting to look like a home, we’re more excited to keep pushing on.”

designer when you have little experience with design can help you avoid potentially costly mistakes. Interior designers are skilled at transforming homeowners’ visions into finished products, and that’s a valuable skill homeowners don’t necessarily have. Trial and error when designing a home’s interior can be costly, even if you’re not knocking down any walls or swinging any hammers. For example, after renovating on their own, homeowners may find they need to replace a new couch or dining table that they realize contradicts their design scheme. Interior designers can help homeowners avoid such costly mistakes and get it right the first time.
• Interior designers can help you coordinate your style. Each and every component of a home’s interior says something about its owner. Whether it’s their choice of lighting fixtures, furniture or even appliances, homeowners make a statement any time they choose a design component for their homes. Interior designers can help homeowners coordinate their styles so each room seamlessly transitions to the next one. An ultra-modern living room may stick out like a sore thumb in a home that’s predominantly rustic, and interior designers can help homeowners avoid such mistakes. • Interior designers recognize what’s trending. Interior designers tend to be up-to-date on the latest trends. That can be incredibly valuable, especially for homeowners who are anticipating putting their homes on the market in the near future. In such instances, designers can help homeowners invest in updates or renovations that will appeal to today’s buyers, increasing the likelihood that their homes will sell more quickly, and potentially for more money. • Interior designers are well-connected. Interior designers often collaborate with contractors. Those professional relationships can help homeowners avoid the headaches of finding the right professionals to work with when renovating their homes.

Looking for lawn alternatives? Try these low-maintenance options A traditional lawn may not be right for ever y proper ty nor desired by every homeowner. There is no denying that lawns take time and effort to establish and daily or weekly maintenance to thrive. Homeowners who find that a traditional lawn is not practical can explore some low-maintenance alternatives.
damp. Moss is velvety soft and green, so it can mimic the look of a traditional lawn but won’t require mowing and other upkeep. Because it spreads quickly, moss can take over quite rapidly. You will need to protect areas where you do not want moss by creating barriers to stop spread.
WILDFLOWER MEADOW
Stone and gravel areas can reduce maintenance in the landscape and require very little upkeep. When gravel is installed correctly, weeds may not grow readily. Gravel installation may include laying heavy-duty, semipermeable landscape fabric, which is available in home improvement centers. Gravel is cheaper than pavers and can be just as beautiful.
Homeowners with wide swaths of property may discover meadows are cost- and time-efficient. Stores sell special wildflower meadow mixes of seeds or homeowners can use wildflower plug plants throughout areas where grasses are left to grow longer. This natural area can be a home to wildlife and an idyllic backdrop to a home. Most meadows only require a spring or summer and autumn cut to thrive and look good.
ORNAMENTAL GRASSES
Partition areas of the property for ornamental grasses to grow. The gardening resource Elemental Green
GRAVEL
says ornamental grasses tend to be drought-resistant and low-maintenance. They won’t need much fertilizer and are often resistant to pests as well. Ornamental grasses grow in tufts or sprays and will not require mowing.
The Lazy Days Of Winter D
uring these lazy days of winter, you can be thankful for having reliable, efficient and safe natural gas in your home.
Here’s how natural gas appliances can provide you with the comfort and convenience you deserve and energy costs that you can afford. Gas Heating: A natural gas furnace is the affordable and efficient choice to keep your home warm and cozy. There are furnace models that are up to 95 percent efficient and produce very low carbon emissions. Gas Water Heating: You get more hot water for less money with natural gas. Whether it’s a traditional tank water heater or an energy-efficient tankless model, natural gas is the affordable and efficient energy to heat your water. Gas Clothes Dryers: A natural gas clothes dryer operates faster and cheaper than an electric dyer – which gives you more time and money to do what you want. Gas Logs and Fireplaces: Gas logs and fireplaces provide beauty and efficient heating, plus you can heat your home when the power is out. And
best of all, no wood storage or clean up required! Cooking Inside and Out: Natural gas is the first choice of professional chefs. It may be too cold for outdoor grilling now, but when the weather is right, you cannot beat a natural gas grill for outdoor entertaining and family fun. And don’t forget the gas lights, pool heaters, fit pits and patio heaters to complete your outdoor room. Standby Generators: Natural gas generators provide electricity during a power disruption to keep your home warm, your refrigerator cold and the lights on. A home that uses natural gas for heating, cooking and clothes drying saves an average of $874 per year compared to homes using electricity for those applications. Not only is natural gas affordable and reliable, it can also make your life easier. What are you waiting for? After your movie is over and your hot chocolate is gone, search online to learn about all the benefits of natural gas. The best part, you don’t even have to leave your home.
However, they are not ideal for areas that get foot traffic.
MOSS
Moss can thrive in shady areas and ones where the soil tends to stay a bit
ARTIFICIAL TURF
If the desired look is a lawn without all the upkeep, there are various artificial grass options on the market. Homeowners who opt for artificial turf can save money and space devoted to lawn mowers and other lawn tools.
