GREATER FORT DODGE GROWTH ALLIANCE BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
For nearly 60 years, Iowa Central Community College has served the greater Fort Dodge region. Officially organized in 1966, the college offers a wide array of educational opportunities to the residents of its nine-county area. Before that time, Iowa Central was known as Fort Dodge Junior College and had been operating since the 1920s by the local public-school systems in Fort Dodge, Webster City and Eagle Grove.
Iowa Central has continued to grow and is now the 5th largest community college in Iowa with annual enrollment of more than 6,000 students. Students can choose to learn in the classroom, on-line or a combination of the two. In addition to the one hundred plus academic programs offered for traditional and non-traditional students, Iowa Central is home to more than thirty sports programs and numerous performing arts programs.
Today, Iowa Central provides students with a mini university setting with the affordability of a community college. In addition to the main campus in Fort Dodge, Iowa Central has centers in Storm Lake and Webster City. Additionally, Iowa Central offers career academics for students in Laurens, Jefferson, and Eagle Grove. Career academies address regional workforce training needs, expand and diversify the pipe-
line of qualified individuals who can fill quality jobs across many occupational fields, and help close opportunity gaps that exist in our region. They provide students with the education and skills needed to find employment in high-demand businesses and industries and advance along the career ladder. On average, Iowa Central serves over 15,000 people annually through our workforce training and economic development programs.
With just under 1,200 employees, the economic impact of Iowa Central is tremendous. Roughly 77% of employees live in the Iowa Central service region, which creates a $152.9 million-dollar economic impact. Additionally, Iowa Central has embarked on nearly $40 million in infrastructure improvements in the last 2 ½ years under the direction and leadership of Dr. Jesse Ulrich, President.
One of those improvements is the new Decker Auditorium and Center for Performing Arts. In April, Iowa Central provided the region with the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast which attracted more than 4000 people to enjoy the student performance in the new space. In addition to adding to the local economy by providing a modern venue for performances that attract large audiences, the college has expanded the quality of life in the region through the arts.
ACADEMICS & SERVICES
Iowa Central offers a one-of-a-kind educational opportunity. Students can select from more than sixty-five degrees, diplomas, and certificates, and more than one-hundred options to transfer. We are proud of our high placement and pass rates, over 8,300 eBooks available, and a 16:1 student teacher ratio! Not only are class sizes small to ensure a personalized experience, but we provide one-on-one academic and financial aid advising to make students’ educational goals our top priority.
LIFE ON CAMPUS
Offering apartment-style living with over 1,200 students living on campus and the state-of-the-a Triton Café, Iowa Central truly is a home away from home. With over 40 campus activities, more than 15 clubs, and intramural activities for our students, Iowa Central takes pride in giving the big college experience at half the cost with smaller class sizes. Take a virtual tour of campus at www.iowacentral.edu/virtualtour
TRITON ATHLETICS
Iowa Central offers 30+ intercollegiate athletic programs, the most of any two-year college in the country. Our college has a rich tradition and history of success in athletics. We have won the Daktronics Trophy (formally NATYCAA Cup), which is the annual award reserved for the top two-year athletic departments in the nation, twelve out of the last fifteen years, and the other three years we placed second. Also, we have won the Learfield Director’s Cup five times out of the eight years it has been awarded.
MUSIC & THEATRE
Featuring six different band ensembles, more than five yearly theatrical and musical productions, and four separate vocal ensembles, our Music and Theatre Department students share their talents with the college as well as the community through numerous productions each year. Productions and concerts are held in our new Decker Auditorium and Center for Performing Arts which opened April 2024.
BUSINESS & COMMUNITY
Business and Community relationships are an important component to Iowa Central as an economic driver to workforce creation. Services include connecting businesses with potential workers, English Language Learning, High School Equivalency Diploma, short term training programs, incumbent worker training, and business and community outreach that includes services through Americas Small Business Development Center.

Fort Dodge Community Foundation and UNITED WAY
LEAVE A LEGACY AND HONOR THE FAMILY
What is a legacy? Generally speaking, a legacy is what someone is remembered for; to leave a lasting legacy is a journey from success to significance. A legacy could involve an idea, a significant achievement, or a fund that is making a difference in one’s community. A legacy can be something you leave behind that will benefit others, perhaps future generations.
Establishing an endowed donor advised fund is a perfect example. Creating an endowed donor advised fund gives caring citizens the opportunity to give back to their community for the long-term and recommend what charitable organizations, projects, or programs they wish to support every year. When a grant is made from a legacy fund, the family’s name is affiliated with the grant, so the grantees and the public know who the donor is that provided them with the support. What a great why to honor a family or the life of a loved one.
The Fort Dodge Community Foundation promotes legacy giving and encourages people to consider establishing endowment funds because they make the most powerful and lasting impact on our community. The Fort Dodge Community Foundation is able to offer donors attractive tax saving advantages that accompany a legacy gift.
TRIPLE YOUR TAX BENEFITS
In certain cases, an endowed fund with the Fort Dodge Community Foundation can offer donors a triple tax benefit. For example, long-term capital assets may be ideal for charitable gifts because assets such as stock, real estate, and farmland may receive a double federal tax benefit. On a stock or cash donation, donors can receive an immediate federal income tax charitable deduction on their gift for the fair market value of the gift. For gifts of real estate, the deduction is 30% of the fair market value of the property. Secondly, assuming the asset is owned for more than one year, the donor can avoid long-term capital gain taxes when the asset is donated.
The third tax benefit is the Endow Iowa Tax Credit. Donors can receive a 25% Endow Iowa state tax credit for gifts made during their lifetime, lowering the after-tax cost of charitable gifts even further. This tax credit is only on donations to qualified community foundations, (the Fort Dodge Community Foundation is qualified). The example here demonstrates how this works.
The donor owns stock with a fair market value of $100,000. The stock was originally purchased for $20,000 (basis). The donor’s income tax rate is 32%, with a capital gains tax rate of 15%. With a 25% tax credit, the donor’s tax savings would be approximately $69,000. So, the donor’s out of pocket cost on the $100,000 gift would be $31,000.
(Note: The Fort Dodge Community Foundation recommends that all donors consult with their tax advisor for specific tax advice or consultation regarding their donations.)
In the true spirit of giving, a legacy gift is a great way to establish an honorable and meaningful legacy for an individual or family by giving back to their community in an impactful way to help improve lives and enhance the quality of life for future generations.
For more information on how a legacy fund might meet your long-term charitable goals, contact the Fort Dodge Community Foundation at 515-573-3171, or visit our web site at: www. fd-foundation.org.

Decker Auditorium and Center for Performing Arts
Anticipation was building on the Iowa Central Campus in April as a crowd gathered outside the newly renovated Decker Auditorium and Center for Performing Arts on a sunny Friday afternoon. Folks celebrated the official opening with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Growth Alliance.
April19th marked the first day the center opened its doors to the community in nearly two years while the building was completed renovated and expanded. “We wish to extend a huge congratulations to Iowa Central, The Iowa Central Board, Dr. Ulrich, the Decker Family, the students and most importantly, our community,” said Matt Johnson, speaking on behalf of the Growth Alliance. “This space will not only enhance the lives of students here, but also the families of this community for years to come.”
With a countdown, Teresa Jackson, director of theatre at Iowa Central, cut the ribbon with golden scissors to the cheers and applause of Iowa Central faculty, staff and students, community members, donors, and board members.
most beautiful facelift and it is now a stunning gift of a space we want to share with all of you: the community, the businesses, the amateurs and professional performers. We are going to unravel this beautiful space that we will treasure and safeguard for years to come. Thank you beyond measure.”
Iowa Central President Dr. Jesse Ulrich said the $14.5 million project was the first major renovation to the auditorium since it was constructed nearly 50 years ago. It was funded by both public and private funds. Approximately $3 million in private donations were raised in the first phase of the “Dream Big, Act Now” Campaign. An additional $3 million was set aside from a 2018 $25.5 million bond issue to assist with the project.
“This was truly a private/public partnership,” Ulrich said. “And why did we do it? It would have been easy to do a lot of different things with $14.5 million, but our community believes in the fine arts, our community believes that our students deserve to come to college and have a college experience with a mini university feel where they can take their
“We didn’t just build it for our students,” he said. “Over 50,000 people go through this building every year. It is the cornerstone of our campus, the most public building we have. It is part of the community.”
Don and Dianne Decker of Fort Dodge made the lead gift to the campaign with a $1 Million donation. The auditorium has donned the Decker Family name since 2006. Decker credited his parents, the late Dale and Donna Decker, for having the vision to invest in Iowa Central and what it offers to Fort Dodge and the surrounding communities.
“It is truly gratifying to see what was started by my parents 40 years ago carry on today,” said Don Decker. “Adding to their vision and seeing it become bigger and better than their original wishes is a dream come true.”
Inside the Center for Performing Arts, freshman Elle Clark, who portrayed Belle in Iowa Central’s production of “Beauty and the Beast, delivered the
first performance on the stage in the newly revamped auditorium. “It is one of the highest honors I have ever had to be able to be the first to set the stage and welcome everyone who will come through these doors,” said Clark.
The new space includes a state-of-the-art sound system, acoustic paneling, upgraded lighting controls, new seating, expanded dressing rooms, 16 new restroom fixtures, an updated orchestra pit, a new catwalk, a band room, set building shop, classroom and meeting spaces, an elevator and ADA compliant seating and stage access.
“It is an absolute dream come true,” said Paul Bloomquist, director of bands at Iowa Central.
“We are so happy to be back home,” said Will Lopes, Iowa Central director of choral activities. “We can not wait to express our gratitude to the community through our talents for many years to come.”

How did you first become interested in making music?
I grew up in a musical family, my Mother playing church organ and my Father playing accordion. There was always music in our house day and night. Growing up on a farm, we learned early on that “hard work always beats out talent”.
What was your educational path?
I graduated in a class of 27 students from a small school in White, South Dakota called Deubrook. My college years were spent playing percussion at SDSU – Brookings, graduating with a Bachelors in Music
Saiya Noborikawa
Age: 15 • Grade/School: 9th grade freshman at Fort Dodge Senior High Hometown: I was born in Waterloo and then I moved to Humboldt for my freshman year in high school.
Education in 1982. I taught Grades 5-8 band at Pocahontas from 1983 – 2006.
What was your most memorable part about being an educator?
We had band every day, so seeing enthusiastic youngsters and their progress was memorable. Music was my hobby, so I basically never had to go to work a day in my life as a band director. Most enjoyable part of teaching is when that “lightbulb” moment happens with the students.
“I See, Forget, I Hear, I Remember, I Do, I Understand.”
How long have you been performing?
Around 50 years, as I started playing drums with “Harlof Jensen & the Bluebirds”, my Dad’s polka band in South Dakota. I was 14 years old earning $40 for a 4 hour gig and paid my way through college performing in many polka, country & rock n roll groups in eastern South Dakota.
Tell us about some of the bands you have been in.
I have been playing drums and singing with “The Expressions” Rock n Roll Band out of Storm Lake from 1986 – present.
A longtime member of the percussion section with the Karl King Municipal Band from 1985 – present. I also have led the Humboldt Big Band for over 38 years during the annual Humboldt Community Chorus Show in February.
I played drums for the Miss South Dakota Pageant in the Black Hills for 16 years.
Playing polka music is my passion, having played with Little Joe Polka Band, Wayne Ripke, Karl Hartwich, Peter & Paul Wendinger, Barefoot Becky and others throughout the Midwest.
Who has had the greatest influence for you when it comes to music?
I was fortunate to have many teachers, musicians and friends who gave me the opportunity to explore and discover my potential through my years in music. Find your passion and surround yourself with folks who love music, and everything else will fall into place.
If I were to pick one person, it would be Cameron McCurdy, my co-worker, mentor and high school band director at Pocahontas Area for over 20 years. Cam taught me to be organized and learn something from every musical experience and carry it to the next performance. He was the most talented all-around musician I have ever met, and a wonderful, kind, passionate person who kept me on level ground.
If you had a chance to meet any performer/musician, alive or dead, whom would you choose and why?
Doc Severinsen because he has been an idol of mine for years since watching him play trumpet and lead the band on “The Tonight Show”. Doc is a very colorful figure and continues to perform at age 96.

What is the most unusual thing to have happened to you during a show/performance?
1981 President Reagan Inaugural Parade, with over 450 horses in the parade and we were instructed to keep our heads high, lines straight and march through the horse droppings no matter what. At the end of the parade route, everyone took off their shoes, tied them together and hung them out the bus
These
days, where can we see you playing throughout the
year?
You will find me playing drums in NW Iowa with “The Expressions” throughout the summer months, Karl King Band Concerts in Fort Dodge, Pocahontas & Emmetsburg Community Bands, many area jam sessions, big bands at Lake Robbins Ballroom, and Midwest Polka Fests with “Barefoot Becky”. Music is my life and would mean nothing without the support of my lovely wife, Becky. You will see Becky and I attending and supporting many live music events in the area.
What
has been the hardest lesson to learn when it comes
to music and performing?
The hardest lesson is that perfection is something none of us will ever reach. However, it is the journey towards perfection that matters more than the end result. Not sure I have ever played a perfect song from start to finish, but keep going, smile and never show the audience you made a mistake. Strive to be the best you can be and have the confidence in yourself and your potential. Make a connection and interact with the audience before, during and after each performance. Pick music that the musicians will like playing, and the audience will enjoy listening to. “Happy Music for Happy People.”

FINANCIAL TIPS FOR WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS
Losing a spouse is one of the most painful experiences anyone can have. Unfortunately, widows and widowers have to deal with more than just the emotional trauma — they also must consider a range of financial issues. If you’ve recently been widowed, what financial moves should you consider?
For starters, don’t rush into any major decisions. If you’re still in the grieving process, you are unlikely to be in the best shape to make significant choices affecting your finances and your life.
But once you feel ready to look at your situation objectively and make appropriate choices, consider the following steps:
Review your finances. Look at your entire financial picture — your assets, investments, debts and income. If you and your spouse had communicated well about your finances, and you shared decisions, you hopefully won’t encounter any big surprises. But if your spouse was the partner who mostly handled financial matters, you may need to get up to speed quickly on what you have and what you owe. And if your spouse had provided a large amount of your household income, you will also need to determine what changes you may need to make to your lifestyle.
Address insurance issues. If you will receive a death benefit from your spouse’s insurance policy, what will you do with the money? It may prove helpful in funding your own retirement or meeting other financial goals. But you’ll also want to be clear about what other beneficiaries, such as your children, might receive. And while you’re looking at insurance, you also might want to look at your own policies — do you need to change beneficiaries?
Review your Social Security options. If you are at least 60 and you were married at least nine months, you may be entitled to Social Security survivor benefits. (If you remarry before age 60, you typically cannot receive survivor benefits, but you can reinstate them if this subsequent marriage ends.) The amount of your survivor’s benefits depends on your age and the age of your deceased spouse. You can’t claim your deceased spouse’s benefits along with your own retirement benefits, so if you qualify for survivor and retirement benefits, you’ll receive the larger amount. Depending on your situation, you might come out ahead by delaying your retirement benefits, giving them the chance to grow, while you
accept survivor benefits. For more details on receiving Social Security benefits, visit the Social Security Administration’s website at www.ssa.gov.
Review your estate plans. The death of a spouse can certainly affect your family’s estate plans. So, it’s a good idea to review these plans to see what changes, if any, need to be made. When conducting this review, you’ll benefit from working with an estate-planning professional.
Finally, keep in mind that you don’t have to go it alone during this difficult time. If you’re already working with a financial professional, they can help. If you aren’t currently working with one, now might be the time to start. By looking at your finances and your family situation holistically, a financial professional can provide guidance that can help ease the stress you are naturally feeling.
Few events are as sad as losing a spouse. But when you feel ready, start taking the steps necessary to continue forward on your life’s journey.
