The University of Aveiro has a long tradition (20 years) in urban and regional planning related education, being, actually, a pioneer in Portugal. It offers a MSc in Urban and Regional Planning built on this long tradition and the pioneering role. The MSc has been created having as basis, on the one hand, the changes in the degree in Urban and Regional Planning provoked by the Bologna process, and, on the other hand, the creation of a degree in Public Administration at the Department of Social, Law and Political Sciences, with a minor in Spatial Planning. The MSc aims to provide more specialised education to those students who have a degree in spatial planning related domains, as well as to those who want to increase their competences in the fiels of spatial planning.

In general terms, the MSc aims to provide students with a spatial planning culture comprising the following three dimensions: capacity to intervene in actual urban and regional development situations; knowledge about the theoretical and conceptual evolution in the domain of urban and regional planning, as well as about the evolution of planning policy and practice at the international level; capacity to develop a critical and proactive approach towards the society and the territory.
