MODEL SHOW REPORT

WE FEEL THE NEED, ! D E E P S R O F D E E N E H T SHIZUOKA HOBBY SHOW 2016

This year, Brett Green attended the Shizuoka Hobby Show and he brings us his photo report from the event, the highlight of which must surely be Tamiya's all-new 1:48 F-14A Tomcat!

A

t this year's SHS, Tamiya had a new item to announce that, for once, had been a remarkably well-kept secret before the event, quite a challenge in these days of social media and tiny digital cameras! It was, of course, the all-new 1:48 Grumman F-14A Tomcat and it made a mighty splash on the model scene. The kit features positionable wings with alternative parts for the flexible wing-root surrounds for each mode. To make the kit easy to construct and to accurately depict a 'parked' machine, the flight controls are moulded integrally with the wings. Also shown by Tamiya were the 99.9% new M10 tank destroyer (it uses just the .50cal MG and clear parts from previous releases), 1:48 Type 10 JGSDF MBT and 1:16 RC Jagdpanzer IV Lang. Other manufacturers were plentiful of course and they had some mouthwatering new stuff to show. AFV Club announced a new-tool 1:35 M113 ACAV, Kinetic proudly showed off their stunning new 1:48 F/A-18C Hornet (see page 18 this issue), MiniArt revealed their 1:35 SU-122 with full interior and announced a new T-54 MBT and

8

Hobbyboss showed their new 1:35 ADGZ armoured car. Airfix exhibited test-shot sprues of their new 1:72 B-17 Flying Fortress and Beaufighter Mk.X, Rye Field unveiled plans to release a Bergetiger I in 1:35 and Dragon announced an Egyptian Sherman with the AMX-13 turret. Bandai will be releasing a new 1:72 Star Wars A-Wing which comes with a Death Star turbolaser turret and they also showed a Star Wars 'STAP' (Single Trooper Aerial Platform) as seen in the Phantom Menace. Meng were present and they displayed their new kit of the M1A2 SEP TUSK I/Tusk II Abrams; more details of this kit soon in TMMI. Of course, there was a whole load of other cool now kits on show, way too many to fit into the space we have in this issue. So we hope you enjoy the report, more news in coming issues as we sort through the photos! Please note, many kits on show – including Tamiya – were built from test-shots and are thus subject to change in the final production releases.

KIT PREVIEW KINETIC F/A-18C HORNET ● KIT NO.K48031

TMMI’s Editor inspects the sprues of Kinetic’s newest aircraft kit, the F/A-18C Hornet in 1:48

CARRIER BASED, WITH A STING

T

he F/A-18 Hornet dominates US Naval and Marines airpower and is therefore an extremely significant part of NATO’s inventory. Many kits of its various versions have been issued over the years and now, Kinetic have joined the fray with their all-new 1:48 model of the ‘C’ model. Our box arrived a little dented after its journey from Hong Kong to the UK, but thankfully, the model inside was completely unharmed. The kit is a completely new production, not a re-boxing from another manufacturer and Kinetic have taken a logical approach to its design. The upper part of the fuselage also has the upper wing halves moulded integrally, which means they will be perfectly aligned; a big help for the modeller and it improves the strength of the airframe too. The lower fuselage is a one-piece moulding with the air-intake housings fully formed, eliminating the need for a multi-part structure here and therefore no need for filling and seam concealment. I trimmed out the two fuselage mouldings for this review and I can safely say that they fit together with great precision. The forward joint-line is hidden under the ‘chines’ that flank the cockpit and will just need a minor application of filler to hide completely. The rear joint-lines that run on the outer faces of the engines almost disappeared when I pressed the halves together, so this will be easy to conceal when the liquid cement comes into play.

The cockpit comes in the form of a one-piece tub with side consoles moulded in; the rear seat part of the moulding is present of course, but sealed over with a flat panel, rather like the real aircraft. Rudder pedals, instrument panel and the forward console panels are all moulded individually and the seat, whilst only consisting of six parts plus photo-etched brass harness (which is a little over-simplified) is well detailed and once painted and a few cables added, will look good when in place. Without doubt, many modellers will go for a resin replacement however. A wing-fold option is included and it’s a well thought-out design. As they come as standard, the wings are moulded with their tips extended, the modeller having to cut the outer-most sections off and fit new tips with detailed edges plus new hinge blocks if they prefer the ‘wings-folded’ mode. This is far better than having the tips moulded individually then having to accurately them fix them to the wings’ inner sections if the extended position is required. Aside from the rudders, all control surfaces are moulded individually and the kit also comes with a decent selection of underwing stores that includes the AIM-120B, AIM-120C, AIM-9M, AIM-9X, AGM-88, GBU-12, CBY-87 and GBU-38, plus AAQ-28, AAS-38 and Sniper XR pods. The stores come with a painting guide and data decals. The model comes with no less than

seven markings options, including grey US Navy and US Marines (of course), plus a Swiss and two Navy aircraft in ‘Aggressor’ schemes consisting of Russian-style upper camouflage. The decals are designed by Fightertown Decals and printed by Cartograf, so they are as close to perfect as they can be. From an in-box view, this looks like an absolutely superb kit and a huge advance from Kinetic’s earliest releases. ● MN

TMMI's Editor starts work on Tamiya's excellent new 1:35 kit of the WW2 Soviet SU-76M self-propelled anti-tank gun

T

he SU-76 (Samokhodnaya Ustanovka 76) was a Soviet self-propelled gun used during and after World War II. It was based on a lengthened and widened version of the T-70 light tank chassis and its simple construction made it the second most produced Soviet armoured vehicle of World War II, after the T-34 tank. Crews liked the vehicle for its simplicity, reliability, and ease of use. However, the steering was also sometimes regarded as cumbersome, leading crews to refer to the vehicle in less than flattering terms...

TAMIYA'S ALL-NEW KIT

Tamiya's 1:35 SU-76M is a new-tool production for 2016, released earlier this year to much acclaim from modellers of WW2 Soviet armour. It's an open-topped vehicle so its 76mm gun is fully exposed and Tamiya have given us plenty of detail here. The gun can elevate and traverse thanks to the use or polycaps and this will be an attractive feature, if the three-man crew isn't installed. Talking of which, one of the figures bears a striking resemblance to a certain Mr Putin; is this is a great piece of tongue-in-cheek fun or a happy accident we wonder? Compared to the AMX-13 I built

Part 1

over the last two previous issues, the new SU-76M is significantly more complex and also comes with moulded, link-and-length tracks. Whilst a lot more fiddly to fit, they offer a far more convincing appearance than one-piece flexible tracks, particularly on a vehicle with an exposed upper track run. On a machine like the SU-76M that exhibited a pronounced degree of 'track-sag', the moulded tracks are essential. So, let's let the pictures do the talking and take a look at the opening stages of construction of Tamiya's new 1:35 SU-76M self-propelled anti-tank gun. Assembly will continue next month. â—?

Here we see the lower hull side-panels. The outer faces carry superb detail but unfortunately, due to the moulding process, there are a fair few ejector-pin marks in evidence. Thankfully they are slightly raised and therefore easy to scrape off with a rounded, No. 10 scalpel blade (Swann-Morton, of course!)

The hull/fighting compartment rear wall sports excellent detail in the form of padded panels for the crew. This part will be fitted once the upper side walls are in place

The fighting compartment walls also exhibit ejector-pin marks and here, they are recessed so needed filling. Some will be hidden by items of equipment but the marks were filled just to be sure

The right-side upper hull wall has had some of its internal fittings cemented in place;the radio set and the racks for the PPSh-41 drum-magazines. The radio will be masked off and painted in-situ once the wall has been cemented to the main hull

The drive-sprockets' stub-axles push into polycaps in familiar Tamiya style. These useful polythene bushes are trapped in place behind the final-drive housings and await their sprockets, to be mounted later on in the construction process.

The hull begins to take shape. Although the main structure of the SU-76M builds up from individual panels, they align perfectly thanks to the precision of the moulded parts that Tamiya has built its reputation on

These close-ups of the hull during construction show the central bulkhead where the gun will mount, as well as the interior of the fighting compartment. The boxy structure in the photo above left shrouds the engine air intake and other mechanical systems of the real machine

The upper deck plate must be positioned in exactly the right way or it won't fit, nor will the glacis plate that follows. In the centre of this photo we can see an alignment tab in the deck moulding and the corresponding rebate in the lower hull side-plate. These must meet up to locate the plate correctly

The deck plate sits level with the top edge of the left-side hull panel, not on top of it. The other side with its overhanging engine intake box sits in a cut-out in the right-side hull panel

As we had them in for review, Xuron's sprue-cutters were used on the model to trim out parts ready for use; here, the suspension swing-arms. Their cutters' action was very smooth and they made a very clean cut, leaving only a small scar to clean up. Most impressive

The suspension swing-arms simply fit into sockets in the lower hull. To ensure they remain at the correct angle, a small location-pin is moulded on the hull side, with a corresponding hole in the back face of each swing-arm. A simple but practical solution

The outer front edges of the glacis plate must slide under the raised bolt detail on the protruding final-drive housings to fit correctly. This is explained in the instructions. To ensure the sides of the glacis plate sit firmly on the forward edges of the hull panels, some tape was used to hold it in place while the cement set. The stubs of sprue are there to lift the tape off the glued joint so the liquid cement wouldn’t spread under the tape by capillary action and ruin the outer hull detail

A dab of Mr Cement Deluxe – the slightly thicker version of Mr Hobby’s superb Mr Cement S – was applied to the swing-arm and its location hole, then it was popped into the socket; quick and easy

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:35 US TANK DESTROYER M10 MID PRODUCTION ● KIT NO.35350

Brett Green gets his hands on a test shot of Tamiya’s all-new 1:35 scale US M10 Tank Destroyer

ALLIED ANNIHILATOR T

he M4 Sherman was the backbone of American and British armoured forces, by the time of the Allied campaigns in Italy and North Western Europe. The Sherman was a hard-working tank available in vast numbers thanks to American mass-production and it could hold its own against its German contemporaries, the Panzer III and Panzer IV. However, the 75mm main gun was ineffective against the German heavy tanks, the Panther and the Tiger. American armoured doctrine called for the use of specialised tank destroyers; heavily armed and highly mobile vehicles dedicated to blunting German armoured breakthrough. The M10 Tank Destroyer was the first of these dedicated vehicles. It was based on the chassis of the M4A2 Sherman with new sloped hull armour and an open-topped turret fitted with the M7 76mm anti-tank gun. After seeing service in North Africa and Italy, the M10 was used extensively in France following the D-Day landings of 6th June 1944. The M10’s 76mm gun did not fare well against Tigers and Panthers, but in the drive through France, Belgium and Germany, the vehicle was increasingly used in the infantry support role. More than 4,900 M10s were manufactured.

IN THE BOX

Tamiya has expanded its WWII Allied catalogue with a new 1:35 M10 Tank Destroyer and it has nothing at all in common with the old motorised

M10 released in the 1960s. I was fortunate to receive a ‘white-box’ test shot of this kit during my recent visit to the Shizuoka Hobby Show; not the final product, but it is probably pretty close. The most noticeable difference between this kit and the final version that you will see in the shops is that my sprues are light grey and yours will almost certainly be olive green. The kit is almost all new, including the VVSS running gear and tracks. The only recycled sprues are the .50 cal machine gun, which dates from 1998 and the clear sprue, which includes generic light lenses and crew goggles. Crisp surface detail is present throughout, including a convincing cast-steel texture on the transmission cover subtle welding beads and tie-downs moulded directly to the turret. Like the rest of the kit, the running gear is brand new. The mid-style Vertical Volute Spring Suspension (VVSS) bogie units feature straight return roller arms, packed roller mounts and full-length flexible T51 rubber block tracks. The pressed metal road wheels are made up from a main section and an insert for the rear. Each tyre is moulded to the main plastic section. The drive sprocket and idler wheel are attached to the suspension via poly caps. The lower hull is made up from a ‘flat pack’ arrangement of separate floor, sides and engine firewall and the fighting compartment floor is built into this sub-assembly. The two identical sponson blanks are cleverly moulded symmetrically

from front to rear and the ammunition stowage is mounted on the top side of these sponsons. Detail on the full-length flexible tracks is very crisp and clean on the outside and edges. Even on the inside of the blocks there is no sign of ejector pin marks or flash, only a small circle on every twelfth link. It is also interesting to note that the way the track-ends join differently on this model. Instead of locating pins and holes, each track features two slightly raised squares and two corresponding recessed squares on the other side. This should ensure a nice flat joint. Forty individual armour bosses are supplied for the outside of the hull and the turret. Each has to be cut away from two sprue attachments, so some care will be required to maintain their circular shape. Tamiya’s 1:35 scale M10 Tank Destroyer is a well detailed model with a nicely fitted out turret and a set of crew figures that lifts it into the category of ‘instant vignette’. The decision to include full-length flexible tracks is entirely appropriate considering the tracks are ‘live’ on VVSS suspension and were therefore stretched taut while fitted to the vehicle. We can only hope that the new VVSS suspension finds its way onto other M4 variants from Tamiya in the future! Highly recommended. ● BG MODEL SPEC TAMIYA US TANK DESTROYER M10 MID PRODUCTION KIT NO.35350 SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .IM, SVT, WS AVAILABILITY; Tamiya kits are widely available from good model shops. ADVANCED AERONAUTICS Sampson WS Yu takes a slightly different approach with the finish of Zoukei-Mura's 1:32 Horten Ho229 'Flying Wing' 26 July 2016 TMMI 249

T

he Horten Ho229 jet fighter/bomber was designed and developed by Reimar and Walter Horten in late WW2. According to Hermann Göring’s plan, the aircraft had to meet three '1000' criteria; to carry 1000kg of bombs, have a maximum speed 1000 Km/h and a range 1000 Km. The unique shape of the flying wing is remarkable; even nowadays, after seventy years it is still an impressive design. You can glimpse a similar design in Northrop's B2 Spirit bomber serving the US Air Force, but back seventy years ago there was no fly-by-wire system and no computer trimming of the control surfaces to maintain the flight balance for the pilots. Unimaginable technology for the Luftwaffe.

ABOUT THE KIT

The kit is manufactured by Zoukei-Mura and while it's not the only Horten you can find on the market, it is the only one in 1:32 with so many impressive details including the complete airframe and wing structure. The airframe and components under the skin were carefully designed and moulded on the sprue. Large amounts of clear parts provide a choice for modellers, should they wish to exhibit the interior structure but don't want to cut the 'skin' off. The decal sheet provides a complete numerical alphabet for modellers who might wish to apply a 'what-if' scheme, since this is a plane that never had the chance to serve in combat.

BEFORE BUILDING

The only existing Horten is now under restoration at the Smithsonian National Air

and Space Museum's Paul E. Garber facility in Suitland, Maryland, USA. With the large amount of precious photos released by the museum, I decided to build my model to look just like the one in the facility, with heavy rust on the airframe's metallic parts, the skin peeling off and heavily faded colour on the airframe's surfaces.

BUILDING THE JUMO 004 ENGINES

Unlike typical aircraft models, this one started with engine assembly, instead of the cockpit. I can tell you, the engines are complete kits already, with fifty-three parts for each one, including all the pipework and auxiliary equipment. The most impressive highlight is that all the fan blades and stator blades are present inside the housing! I replaced the original, thicker injection-moulded plumbing parts with brass and aluminium tubing in more realistic dimensions ranging 0.3mm to 1.5 mm. I added about seventy percent of the plumbing details compared to the actual engine in accordance with reference photos, which I think is good enough for the overall aesthetics of the model. After the pipework had been fitted, it was time to paint the powerplants. Observing real aluminium parts, you’ll find the oxidised aluminium appears more like a powdery white grey, therefore I tried to use light grey as the base coat for the engine instead of shiny metallic colours. The base-coat was then covered with some chipping effects in lighter grey, to create the oxide aluminium patina. After all paint and plumbing details were complete, some

U

Much of the real Ho229's fuselage was formed from plywood, so a heavy de-lamination effect for the layered panels was simulated on the model, as described in the main text

The author installed only the first and last stages of the engine fan blades since the housings would hide the interior. The precious fan blades were saved for future model projects!

The author represented the aluminium engine housings with an oxidised aluminium texture; the surface was painted light grey and white instead of silver. The engine housings were then treated to light colour-washes

Pipework and auxiliary equipment were then installed on the housing. Some rust and dark rust pigments were then applied

The interior framework was painted firstly in light brown, then various other shades of brown were dabbed on with a sponge to create the texture

Over the layers of brown the author applied a thin layer of light grey randomly on the structure, then used a nylon brush to scrub the surfaces, creating the weathered effect. The light grey plays the role of dust and oxidised surfaces After a very light layer of hairspray had been applied to the surface, it was set aside to dry for around eight hours. A dark blue grey colour was then airbrushed over the airframe exterior and also set aside to dry. The peeled paint effect was created by moistening the blue paint with water and rubbing with a paintbrush, exposing the 'plywood' beneath

paints and rusting pigments were applied on the surfaces. After the weathering, they were ready to be mounted to the fuselage frame.

BODY ASSEMBLY AND PAINTING

Zoukei-Mura did great on this kit with whole interior airframe structure. No problems were encountered during the dry-fitting process and all mounting points lined up perfectly. All I had to do was clean up the mould part-lines and drill holes for my future plumbing and wiring needs. After base-coating with Mr.Surfacer 1200, brown-yellow was applied over the framework. After this had fully dried, various shades of brown colour were dabbed on with a fine sponge, creating a rusting effect on the 'metal' structures. With the base rusting colours and textures were complete, a very thin layer of hairspray was applied, followed by thin layers of light grey to simulate the dust and oxidisation effects. Some colour-washes were also applied randomly. Once the airframe was done painting and weathering, it was time for the engines to be mounted.

WING ASSEMBLY

The wing structure features structural elements on the inner surfaces of the airframe and modellers can choose to exhibit this work by cutting away the skin to show the interior spars and ribs. After some additional plumbing had been fitted to the fuel tanks (using aluminium tubing) it was time for the painting progress. Since the wing skins were originally made of plywood, I brushed on various layers of brown colours, creating the wood-grain texture. The fuel tanks were treated in the same way as the engine shields, creating an aluminium oxide effect on their surfaces. Most of the Horten's fuselage was made of plywood and since the scheme I had chosen to represent had suffered from long-term storage with no maintenance, heavy de-lamination of the layered wood panels seemed appropriate for the model. Representing this peeling-apart effect on plastic parts takes patience and some very careful handiwork. I first sanded back the skin where the peeling off was to be depicted using a motor tool fitted with a cutting bit. After sanding

Compartment doors were treated the same manner as the fuselage surface

The author scratched-up the surface of the under-fuselage spoiler with coarse, 80-grit sandpaper to create a wood texture, then painted a sand-brown colour

The actual Horten wing was made of plywood, so the inner faces were hand painted to create a wood texture on the surface. Since the wings can be removed and the inner structure can be seen, these little details couldn’t be ignored

Wing fuel-tanks were painted grey with some lighter grey and white chipping on them. Some diluted brown paint was painted on the surface in random patterns creating the staining seen on the surface

28 July 2016 TMMI 249

With the wings off, you can see all the interior structures inside the wing including fuel tanks and ribs

the surface was thin enough, I used a finer grinding bit to further sculpt the edges and form the shapes of the peeling wood. You can also use knife or sandpaper to 'adjust' the peeling skin. After the sanding process was done, I pasted on layers of paper-based masking tape to represent the laminations of the plywood. The reason I chose masking tape is that it is easy to use and the paper's surface texture is perfectly suited to the simulation of plywood. I applied about three layers on each surface and I was pretty satisfied with the result, particularly as it was my first attempt at this technique. Painting started with a base-coat of Mr Surfacer 1200 as usual and the next step was to apply various browns to represent the wood colours. After the brown colour base coat had fully dried, a thin hairspray layer was then applied to act as a water-soluble mask. The upper fuselage and wing were painted with a mixture of dark grey, RLM 65 Hellblau, blue grey and some white. I couldn’t find one individual colour number in according with the reference photographic. The underside of the fuselage was painted in RLM 65.

U

The author painted the outer wing sections in the same manner as the upper fuselage, along with rendering with white over the base-coat to create a faded and worn effect

On the underside of the wing, the author applied RLM 65 Hellblau, diluted with about 20% white

The Balkenkreuze on the lower wing were much easier to paint than those on the upper wing; the masking was done in thirty minutes

Compartment doors were treated with the hairspray effect to create a chipped paint finish, exposing the brown base-coat

Some enamel colour was applied to enhance the contrast on the surfaces, creating more dramatic visual effect

After the base-coat was done, acrylic thinner and water were sprayed on the surface and a little diluted white paint was gently dabbed on the surface. The white paint spreads out over the surface creating very natural patterning. If I wasn't happy with the result, I adjusted the surface with a sponge. One this process was complete, I sprayed a colour slightly lighter than the base shade, adjusting the contrast between the white and the original base coat. After this had dried for more than eight hours, the chipped and flaked edges of the skin were created by brushing with a nylon brush dampened with water. In order to represent the marking scheme of the existing aircraft at the Smithsonian, I had to mask up and paint the swastikas and balkenkreuze on the wing and 'fuselage'. Note that I applied crackle medium before I painted the white, creating the fractured effect on the marking. After the wing and fuselage were done, the landing gear, compartment doors and wheels were assembled and the wing was attached with four pins on each side, which means you can easily remove/reinstall the pins depending on which configuration you want.

The author created a weighted appearance on the tyre by heating up the part and forming the flat spot by pressing it onto a flat surface

IN CONCLUSION

This is my second build of a Zoukei-Mura kit, the first one being the J7W1 Shinden in 1:32, released in 2010. After five years I can testify to great improvements by ZM; the fit is accurate with no problems throughout, part thickness is reasonable, cockpit instrumentation is very authentic. One thing you have to pay attention is to is the mould release oil. It must be fully removed before painting, especially on the clear parts, and I used Mr Muscle detergent to dissolve the oil, which was pretty effective. For those of you who are Luftwaffe aircraft fans like me, this is the kit must build, so enjoy! â—?

or this article I used a pre-production kit, which explains the light grey colour of its parts. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to build this model as quickly as expected and it is only recently that I finished it. This slight delay did allow me to consider a different scenario for the model's presentation. The Italian company Italeri released its own M4A3E8 to depict the tank seen in the film 'Fury' in which actor Brad Pitt plays a fearless tank commander leader. Italeri had the good idea to accompany their Sherman with a multitude of accessories to replicate those seen in the film. At the suggestion of the Editor, I decided to make use of these accessories on the Tamiya kit, rather than leave them in their box on a shelf. The use of the various items from the Italeri kit was problem-free as you will see throughout this article and the depiction of 'Fury' also allowed me to take the effects of mud and dirt to the extreme.

DIRTY FURY

For painting, I admit I did perhaps get a little carried away with the mud and dirt, but it must be said that the vehicle in the film is a true 'pile of mud'! I applied the paint as I usual, by airbrushing on diluted Tamiya diluted acrylics. I also applied the camouflage of broad black stripes that can be discerned on the tank used during the shooting and on many Shermans on operations in Europe, following D-Day. For the mud, I started by applying some 'dust' via airbrush and I did the rest of the work with texturing paint, which I had also used on my previous dioramas. This paint is difficult to clean off afterwards, so I sacrificed an old brush to apply the material to the underbody and tracks. I took time to reproduce the traces of mud on the upper hull sides and on the turret as seen in the film. Finally, the model looked similar to that seen on the big screen, which was the goal!

Tamiya model is seen here fully built, with the Italeri accessory items in olive green and Italeri tracks to recreate the tank seen in the film 'Fury'

FURY'S PAINTING STAGES FROM START TO FINISH

After a coat of a Tamiya primer in order to unify the colours and detect possible surface defects, XF-62 Olive Drab colour was generously airbrushed over the entire model. Several coats with twenty-minute intervals will give a perfect finish

By adding a bit of XF-5 Yellow Green to the base colour, the author lightened the upper parts of the hull and turret

The camouflage of black bands was airbrushed freehand using XF-1 Flat Black and a little XF-52 Flat Earth

Still using the airbrush, the author sprayed the turret stowage with XF-49 Khaki, then gave the undercarriage a dusty appearance using XF-72 JGSDF Brown

The various non-airbrushable accessories; tree trunks, machine gun barrel, rubber road-wheel tyres, were painted with a brush

A layer of X-22 Clear (varnish) was applied to protect the base paint. The author then applied Italeri decals before starting the weathering work with Tamiya Panel Line Accent Colors spread over the entire model

The author created some paint-scratches with an ultra-fine Sakura felt-tipped pen before applying a coat of matt varnish. He then ‘soiled’ with the model with Tamiya Texture Paint (Dark Earth) and various colour-washes using XF-52 and XF-57, diluted with water

Painting was completed by adding some metallic highlights on the corners of the hull and on the turret. The tracks were installed at this point, plus the ‘glass’ areas of the tank commander’s cupola

PAINTING AND WEATHERING FURY’S TRACKS

Tamiya primer and XF-72 were applied to the Italeri tracks. The newer vinyl used by the Italian manufacturer seems to be much better than before and the paint did not flake off

The author drybrushed the tracks’ rubber treads with XF-1 Flat Black and the connectors with X-11 Chrome Silver

The mud application was carried out with Tamiya texturing paint, applied with an old brush. Care must be taken to leave visible the structure of each pad and not cover all the detail

FURY’S WEATHERING STAGES IN DETAIL

After applying several dust layers (XF-72) on the running gear, the author touched-in the rubber parts with matt black to which had been added a little earth colour, so the black wasn't too dark

The logs were reworked with a brush to give them a little more depth and detail

The author used his Sakura felt-pen again to create scratches on the surface of the hull

The turret received the same weathering steps as the rest of the model

With a finer brush, the author continued to apply small mud splashes here and there over the tank, inspired by the film where the Sherman appears very dirty indeed

36 July 2016 TMMI 249

p 32-38 ShermanDio 249MN.indd 36

To create further mud splashes, the author used Tamiya Weathering Sticks, picking up the material paint with a flat brush moistened with water

Using Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color black and brown, the author reproduced various streaks and highlighted the details. The whole hull was given this treatment

Tamiya texturing paint was used to give the suspension a muddy appearance, as seen in the film; an old brush will do as it will be unusable afterwards!

He then splattered the model by flicking the brush hair against a toothpick

After covering the model with a layer of matt varnish (Tamiya aerosol), the author started creating a metallic sheen with a pencil

27/05/2016 11:21

The Italeri 'Fury' decal was affixed between two layers of gloss varnish

The turret was covered in mud, but without concealing surface details. The glazed parts of the tank commander's cupola bring more authenticity to this part of the model

Various accessories are stowed on the frontal armour and various traces of dirt and mud enhance the realism of the model. The use of HB pencil has given more depth to the model by creating polished metal effects

A German helmet with a gas mask brings a touch of originality. Tamiya mud applied small touches give a very operational look at the model of Sherman

The tools were enhanced with steel-coloured Tamiya pastels

Splashes of Tamiya texturing paint enable you to create interesting material effects, but be careful not to cover the entire model

The Italeri tracks are suitable for this model, but the end-connector details are, however, rather poor

The author applied the mixture Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color (black) with a little Humbrol gloss on parts of the chassis to simulate the streaks of oil and grease

The diorama was built onto a wooden base improvised from a wooden tray. Tamiya decor sheets were used here to reproduce a portion of cobblestones and brick wall in the background. The path and the structure of the wall are made from foam-board from which the paper was removed

The base was painted in the same shades as the model and adhesive letters give it a little more depth. The cobbles and path were airbrushed

p 32-38 ShermanDio 249MN.indd 38

Tamiya's US Tank Crew (35347) energizes the diorama and adds some life around the tank. The author used many elements provided in this set, as well as those in the Italeri box, to create a refuelling scene, before the fighting. The poses of the Tamiya figurines is very natural and they can be easily placed in different ways around any American vehicle of the Second World War in Europe, 1944-45. ●

REVELL, EUROPE

www.revell.de/en Revell have launched a series of handy paint packs for various subjects, each consisting of six 5ml pots of acrylic paint in near unbreakable plastic, with snap-shut lids. The paints are hand-brushable and are perfect for an introduction into scale modelling. Each set is targeted at a specific subject area, so we have NATO shades in the Military Set, red, aluminium and black in the Sports Car set. However some colour combinations seem a little narrow; the Military Aircraft Set comprising white, black, light grey, silver, steel and aluminium for example. Maybe six of the basic RLM colours for Luftwaffe subjects, or perhaps wartime RAF camouflage shades might have been a little more useful? Anyway, these still handy sets for beginners, but a little more variety might make them more attractive. DEF MODEL, KOREA

http://defmodel.com DEF Model have become the go-to company for pretty much any wheeled vehicle kit these days, offering high quality resin replacements for the kit's standard vinyl tyres and injectionmoulded hubs with new items with the all-important bulged sidewalls and flattened contact points. As well as these features, DEF's tyres and wheels carry much improved sidewall detail (manufacturer's logos and data) and enhanced treads. Many sets also include pre-cut masks to ease the painting process. DEF are always up to date too, rapidly releasing wheel/tyre sets for newly released kits. Here's the list of new releases that have arrived at TMMI, the highlight of which (for us) is the amazingly bulbous, low-pressure tyres for Hobbyboss's SS-23 Spider kit. VALLEJO, SPAIN

www.creativemodels.co.uk Vallejo have some new ranges of weathering materials on release, and we have received quite a few of them for review! In the 'Splash Mud' line, we have various shades of browns and greys that have been formulated to simulate, as the name suggests, splashed-up mud on AFVs and similar. The materials are thick a gloopy with a hint of 'grit' to add texture. These can be 'flicked' onto the model with a stiff brush to create a splattered effect or maybe thin them slightly to reduce the heavy build-up. The 'Thick Mud' line is self-explanatory, with thick loams to depict the terrain of Russia, Europe and more included. The 'Engine' line includes colours such as 'Petrol Spills' and 'Diesel Stains' and will be useful for AFV engine decks and workshop scenes. The fuel-theme materials here are much thinner than the other ranges but 'Brown Engine Soot' is thicker. The 'Environment' line include products such as 'Moss and Lichen', 'Crushed Grass' (as gross and slimy as it sounds) and 'Mud and Grass'; you get the idea; nice ideas to finish off groundwork. Some imaginative thought has been put into the creation of these ranges and many will make very convenient sources of instant muck for all types of scale model vehicle and diorama. STEARMAN PT-17 KAYDET www.revell.de/en, @RevellGermany or facebook.com/revell SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 03957 Revell’s new 1:48 Stearman was initially released in Revell USA packaging in 2014 as a new-tooling. Now it has been issued in the more familiar Revell Europe packaging and moulded in bright yellow plastic, marginally better to work with than the original white, but medium grey would have been better still. This is a beautifully detailed model that features fulllength fuselage framework (some of this can be seen through the open cockpit apertures) plus a detailed firewall, engine mount and exposed radial engine with individually moulded exhaust collectors, pushrod disc and ancillary parts. A rigging diagram is included (it’s not too challenging) plus two markings-options for an all-yellow US Navy machine (restored, Germany 2015) and a blue/yellow US Army Air Corps Stearman 1941. A very important aircraft in the history of aviation and a well presented kit. MN

AIRBUS A320 ETIHAD AIRWAYS www.revell.de/en, @RevellGermany or facebook.com/revell SCALE; 1:144 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 03968 In the newly designed box we have Revell’s 2000-issued kit of the Airbus A320, which is a pretty nice production, but carrying a little flash in some places as the moulds begin to age. The model’s detail levels are excellent however and the parts cleanup won’t take long; just use a fresh modelling knife and some fine sandpaper and the flash will disappear. The model comes with a set of very attractive decals for the United Arab Emirates airline ‘Etihad’, which is based at Abu Dhabi. In fact it is the decal sheet of this release that really catches the eye; it’s beautifully printed with a glossy finish, in perfect register (the colours are all lined up over each other) and the shades of the distinctive geometric tail flash all look spot-on. The modeller is left to mix their own paint to recreate the pearlescent off-white colour used by the airline on the fuselage and a recipe is provided in the instructions, using Revell acrylics. MN

TOPOL SS-25 SICKLE www.revell.de/en, @RevellGermany or facebook.com/revell SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 03303 Zvezda originally released this kit of the awe-inspiring, fourteen-wheel SS-25 Sickle ‘Topol’ in their own boxing and now Revell have issued it in their own box. It is an incredible kit, moulded over five large sprues of grey polystyrene plus one small sprue of clear. It features a full, multi-part suspension system which is mounted to the central chassis rail and this stage of assembly alone will soak up the bulk of the kit’s construction time. Onto the chassis, the ‘bodywork’ is built up, again from lots of smaller parts and then the vast missile launcher tube is fitted. Detail is fantastic throughout and as well as the standard overall green and camouflage paint schemes, the fabulous ‘START1’ scheme is also offered, which has a yellow launcher on a green vehicle, with large Cyrillic lettering along the side. This is my favourite paint scheme! MN Very impressive levels of detail throughout; it’s more like a scaleddown 1:35 kit Vinyl tyres are not a problem, but a set of DEF Model weighted resin tyres would add extra realism, were they to make them

MCLAREN HONDA EARLY SEASON MP4-30 2015 www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:20 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; EMSF-1 NO.013 Ebbro’s second 1:20 kit of the 2015 McLaren MP4-30 depicts the ‘early season’ version, which follows the ‘mid-season’ kit released earlier this year. As well as the obvious difference in paint schemes, there are some physical differences too; in the newer kit, the upper element of the rear wing (B9) has a ridged edge, there are two banks of new aero elements under the nose section, the louvred panels either side of the driver are now gone, there’s a new instrument decal for the steering wheel and the tyres are now ‘softs’, a change from the ‘super-softs’ of the Mid-Season kit. The Early Season model shares the same fantastic levels of detail throughout and the engineering of the injectionmoulded parts has distinctly Tamiya-feel to it, which is very comforting indeed! MN

Great to see a nearly up to date F1 car kit, a rare thing these days. Excellent detail and high quality mouldings throughout Decals for harnesses. A three-dimensional harness set will look a lot better TMMI 249 July 2016

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC

FOKKER D.VII OAW WEEKEND EDITION www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 84155 Although Eduard’s ‘Weekend Edition’ kits appear to suggest they are simpler than the ‘standard’ releases, they can often be every bit as engaging as the full-blown model releases and in the case of the Fokker D.VII OAW, more so. Here we get alternative fuselages (with differing engine cowlings) plus extensive lozengepattern camouflage decalling for the wings’ upper and lower surfaces. These alone will take a couple of days to apply, including drying/setting time! The moulded kit parts exhibit some exquisite surface detail that extends from the engine and cockpit to the ribs on the wings and the in-scale struts. A lovely kit of a good looking WW1 fighter that will appeal to many modellers of WW1 aviation and maybe even some who usually prefer WW2 as well. MN D.VII has minimal rigging, so a good one to build if this puts you off. Great detail and extensive decals. Little to gripe about here really. If you suddenly decide you need the PE, it can be ordered separately

MOEBIUS MODELS, USA FORD 1972 SPORT CUSTOM www.moebiusmodels.com SCALE; 1:25 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, CP, WS KIT NUMBER; 1220 Making use of some of the base-mouldings of their superb 1971 Ford Ranger pickup kit, Moebius have now released the 1972 ‘Sport Custom’ version which features a whole new – and much shorter – chassis and correspondingly shorter, sportier pickup deck, a new 302cu V8 engine and cab interior and some other detail tweaks too. So quite a lot of the kit has been altered to create the ‘72 truck and it will make the perfect companion to go alongside the ‘71 vehicle. The model features some lovely detail inside and out; the big V8 engine and its ancillaries are particularly well done. The cabin moulding of our ‘71 kit had a slightly grainy texture to it, but the shell in the ‘72 kit is smooth, a noticeable improvement and one that will be easier to paint. MN Great retro subject with some major new parts included and lots of colour options. Excellent instructions Moulded-in Ford logos on tailgate and bonnet will be a challenge to paint neatly, thankfully, decals are provided!

What is also interesting is the inclusion of decals for a North Vietnamese Army machine (mentioned within the instructions rather than the separate painting guide), so it can be depicted as a tank from the Vietnam War too. The kit is an all new production and includes some state of the art mouldings and detail, plus photo-etched grilles for the engine deck and track-guard struts, glue-able individual track links, braided metal wire for the towing cable and even the fuel lines that interconnect the fendermounted fuel tanks, as mentioned in last issue’s review of Takom’s Type 69-II. The vessel was procured from the US Navy in 1958 and converted by the Germans to suit the needs of their Kriegsmarine, which included the fitting of a helicopter landing deck and a change in the forward gun-position layout. Revell’s release includes a bag of two new sprues to reflect these changes, and there are quite a few new parts on them. The heli-deck is a large part and it comes with all the necessary struts to attach and support it over the rear of the hull. JU88A-4 WWII GERMAN BOMBER www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 48233 This is the A-4 variant of the ubiquitous Junkers Ju88, which actually came after the A-5, and had extended wings and upgraded defensive weaponry. ICM’s kit reflects these upgrades with new sprues for the relevant areas, which includes a whole new set of engine nacelles, propellers, canopy parts, vertical stabiliser/ rudder and other smaller items. Four markings-options are provided, all for Russia 1941/42; three in the splinter camouflage of that period plus one in a whitewash which was applied to help conceal the bombers when on the ground. The model is highly detailed and thus not a quick build; it features a detailed cockpit and two Jumo engines, which must be built up even if you don’t intend to leave off the panels, as they hold the propeller spindles. Detail is of a high, modern standard and the plastic mouldings are flawless. It represents a piece of hightech medical equipment that would have been used for human stasis on long, deep space missions and as a life-preserver for injured personnel. The kit is cast in resin and comes with a clear front panel, clear tubing and decals for the exterior of the unit. Detail throughout is of a high standard and the resin castings are perfect, although some striations are present on the surface of some parts, a hangover from the master being made using rapid-prototyping technology. A fun project for science-fiction fans. The latest is this theoretical ‘Uhu’ (owl) variant which would have been fitted with a sixty-centimetre infrared searchlight and used to illuminate the battlefield so that troops and vehicles fitted with IR devices could fight in darkness. This is the theory, as an sWS with searchlight never existed in reality. The kit includes a separate sprue for the searchlight and it’s a well detailed unit, with individual photo-etched brass louvres and clear lens mouldings. The vehicle comes with individual but non-articulated tracks and a very detailed replica of the six-cylinder engine plus its ancillaries. As this machine never existed it’s a little academic to criticise the kit’s lack of generator to power the light, but it would have needed this item, either internally mounted or towed. The kit is designed much like one of the company’s 1:24 commercial truck kits, with a robust, one-piece chassis, full engine plus a comprehensive air-suspension system and drivetrain. Building the chassis will take up a lot of workbench time – which is a good thing of course – and you’ll end up with a fantastically detailed subassembly once it’s done. The bodywork is equally complex and of course there’s the rear section with its specialist firefighting equipment, stowed in lockers on either side of the structure. CRAIG ELLIS, PEKO PUBLISHING www.panzerwrecks.com www.adhbooks.com ISBN; 978-615-80072-1-4 The Panzer IV came in so many variants that it's difficult to cover them all in one book, and Peko Publishing's recent volume does not attempt to do this. Sensibly, it provides 112+, hard-bound pages of good quality wartime photographs of some of the more interesting variants, from the early-war A to the late-war J model and many more in between. Russia and the north African desert feature heavily and we see PzIVs with hull and turret schurzen, zimmerit, camouflaged and plain, wrecked and operational. Photo reproduction is generally punchy, with a couple of relevant but fuzzy images here and there, but overall, the reader is presented with enough inspiration to get him/her up to the loft and digging through their Dragon and Tristar Pz.IV models. MICHAEL MASS, ADAM O'BRIEN, DESERT EAGLE PUBLISHING www.aviationbookcentre.com ISBN; 978-965-7700-01-3 The newest book in Desert Eagle's IDF Armour Series (No.15) is the second volume, focusing on the Centurion-based Nagmachon APC. The soft-cover book runs to eighty-four pages including covers and is in full colour throughout. The vehicle is examined photographically in great detail, starting with the early machines with the lower 'doghouse' turret, then moving quite swiftly on to the later type – with tall turret and visually striking anti-RPG bar-armour – and the subject of Tiger Models' recently released 1:35 kit, a full build article on which is coming to TMMI in the coming months. The vehicles depicted in the book are shown in great detail and most areas are treated to close-ups; perfect for the modeller wishing to super-detail their model. Everything is crisply reproduced, from non-slip surfaces to castings, chipped paint, weld seams and torn tyres. Consider this an essential companion when building the Tiger Model kit. MN

he Orca Hover-bike is the latest release from British company, Wild House Models. Wild House describe themselves as; “an enthusiastic collective, formed from talented British designers, artists, 3D CAD professionals, sci-fi kit builders and electronic experts who are passionate about creating and building high quality model resin kits”. Looking at the parts, packaging and presentation of the Orca Wild House have most certainly achieved their goals. The Orca, or to give it its full name, Ordnance and Reconnaissance Covert Avenger, is described as being designed in 2089 by the FUKUI: Kavanagh Corporation (I cannot help but wonder if the manufacturers are having an 'in-joke' here) as a single rider transport with a scramjet engine capable of speeds in excess of 180mph, available in both military and civilian variants. Further back story on the Orca and the fictional universe it is based in is available on Wild House’s website. The 1:32 model

comes in a nicely presented, full colour, side opening box with the parts securely packed inside, along with a colour instruction sheet and decals. There are two clear resin parts with the remainder being very cleanly cast in grey resin. There are alternative parts for both the military and civilian versions, and a rider figure with alternative heads. The model is designed with recesses for wiring and a lighting kit can be purchased separately if one so wishes. The decal sheet is very thorough with a lot of generic warning notices and symbols, such that the modeller is spoiled for choice and will, no doubt, be left with a good number of decals for the spares box. On closer inspection the resin is found to be flaw free with only very minor flash and tiny casting blocks to be removed: there were no signs of air bubbles and as far away from ‘Aero bar’ resin as you can imagine. I must admit that the older I get the more I enjoy building models of original subjects that give you the freedom to let your

BACK STORY

The first decision to make is whether to build the military or civilian version. Whilst both are very tempting I ultimately chose to go for the military version as it fit in with the back story for the model that was slowly germinating in my mind. I did a test fit of the figure sat on the bike, and this is purely a subjective thing, decided that the figure looked a little rigid in this pose and decided to do a little reposing of the figure to stand leaning against the bike. When I am working on an original subject, whether it be a kit-bash of my own creation or a straight build-up of a manufacturer’s product, I like to come up with a back story for the subject as it may

influence the colour, design, 'technology', pose and setting of the completed model. My thoughts developed along the lines of a hover bike rider on a long journey taking a short, but much needed break. He has taken off his helmet and gloves and is leaning against the bike in its rest position. In order to complete the revised figure I needed a set of replacement hands and head, of which there are plenty available in 1:35 but a very limited choice in the slightly larger 1:32. I finally chose a set of WWII pilots by Masterbox, which also influenced the final scene I was to model. The box contained three figures, one of which had suitable hands and head, along with a model of a

V dog. I decided that when

leaning against the bike a stray dog approaches the rider and he offers his open hand to welcome this canine companion. As with all resin kits, I set about giving the parts a thorough clean to remove any residual mould release agent. I normally do this using hot soapy water and Cif Cream Cleaner applied with an old toothbrush as a miniature scrubbing brush in the kitchen sink. However the small size of many of the parts dictated a different approach so as to avoid losing them down the plug hole, never to be seen again. Fortunately, I have a small ultra-sonic cleaner, so I put the small parts on a three minute cycle whilst I cleaned the larger parts in a more traditional manner before leaving them to dry on a paper towel overnight.

ASSEMBLY BEGINS

I had decided to build the parts into sub-assemblies before applying paint and so set about, mostly, following the instructions. Now that I was having an even closer look at the parts I could see signs that the prototype for the model had been built using 3D printing: some of the faces had striations that are often found due to the parts being built up in layers of the printer. As mentioned before, parts clean-up was a breeze and I was very quickly ready to start assembly after removing the very small casting lugs with a Tamiya fine-toothed saw. I started off by building the driver’s seat and rear engine compartment before coming to my first deviation from the recommended construction sequence. The instructions show the rear section sitting into a “U” shaped frame that forms the centre of the bike’s main body. Test fitting showed that this had a very slight tendency to twist so I applied on of the side panels first to give it some rigidity: there are no locating lugs so care has to be taken to ensure that the side panel lines up with the centre frame. The rear section was then glued into place and it is clearly obvious that there is a void designed to take

the lighting electronics. The body was then closed up with the second side panel. Another thing to note is that the resin used in this kit reacts very quickly with super-glue. I tend to use gel type super-glue with larger resin parts, which normally has a slower curing time than the thinner types, but with this resin the grab was almost instantaneous and so care had to be taken that alignment was perfect before bringing two parts together.

DECIDING TIME FOR THE COLOUR

It was at this point I decided to start painting the sub-assemblies and before doing this I applied a coat of Tamiya Grey Primer to all the parts; the smaller ones secured to a sheet of cardboard with masking tape. Whilst this was curing I had time to contemplate the colour scheme for the bike. To some extent the colour scheme is dictated by the machine’s function and whilst I had decided a rural setting for the model – which would suggest a camouflage colour scheme – I decided against this, as I had recently seen an article on building a science fiction subject in such a manner and found that the camouflage worked too well, hiding most of the detail of the model. I ultimately decided to go for a basic grey and blue colour scheme, but have it heavily rusted and weathered to add more visual interest. I first applied a coat of Vallejo Dark Rust with my Aztec airbrush to all the main body parts before using a sponge to randomly apply a second coat of Vallejo Light Rust. Once dry, I sprayed on a coat of chipping fluid before applying a base colour of Sky Grey. Areas of this were masked off and a coat of Pastel Blue was applied to selected areas.

MARKINGS, THEN DIRTYING-DOWN

Before getting on with the weathering I applied the decals by first applying a coat of Vallejo Gloss Varnish. The decal sheet that comes with the kit is very impressive and you are literally spoiled for choice.

This side-on view provides a good look at the different colours, tones and markings applied to the model

The polystyrene can be cut with an old carving knife, but it does tend to break up and leave a lot of loose particles and rough edges

The polystyrene landscaping was then covered with a layer of plaster

You could really go to town applying markings but I decided to be reasonably restrained and kept the decals to a minimum and mainly utilitarian looking than decorative. Micro-Sol and Micro-Set worked well with the decals which were sealed with a further coat of gloss varnish before being toned down with a coat of Purity Seal varnish. I started the weathering process by applying Mig Productions' Green-Brown Streaking Grime which was carefully streaked with a flat brush dipped in enamel thinners to give a more subtle appearance. I have only just started using this manufacturer’s enamel panel line wash but am already in love with the way it flows into panel lines using capillary action: a mixture of Blue-Grey and Black washes were used. Once dry a coat of varnish was applied to protect the work to date before applying Mig Productions' Panzer Fading Grey and Black pigment powders with a chisel-edged brush, my favourite shape of brush for applying pigment and ground pastel powders.

When it came to the landing gear I did some test fitting and found that however I tried it, the rear landing pad was always significantly lower than the forward pad, and at an angle to the horizontal. Now, I am not saying that I wasn’t doing something wrong and this position would work well for a flight mode, but I decided to replace the lower piston with a section of brass rod to get it into a position I was happy with and to add a bit of strength to support the model (the front landing gear looking suspiciously fragile).

Some plaster cast rocks were added at this stage as they should have an organic appearance of being set into the ground rather than perching on top

The ground cover was created using Celluclay (a pre-manufactured papier mache) mixed up with diluted PVA glue

PILOT OR RIDER?

It was now time to work on the figure and the first thing to do was change the pose of the legs by cutting them away from the body using a Tamiya fine toothed saw, sanding them down appropriately and re-gluing them in place with gel type superglue, which is also used as a filler for large gaps. The hands were cut off the arms, which were then similarly cut up and reposed. Any remaining gaps were filled and blended into the surrounding area using

V Aves two-part epoxy putty (I don’t use Milliput as find it creates an adverse allergic reaction with the skin on my hands and I can’t abide working in rubber gloves). The head and hands from the aviator set of figures were then glued in place. I do not claim to be a sculptor like my good friend and colleague, Andy Pearson, but the figure looked sufficient for the purpose. I will just pause here to make a small comment about the figure: whilst very well sculpted I cannot but feel that it does appear slightly out of scale in comparison to the bike. My personal opinion is that a slightly larger figure would have looked better, or a smaller seat on the bike if the sense of size was desired to be maintained by the manufacturer.

FINAL ELEMENTS

With all the painting complete it was time to assemble the diorama. The bike was secured to the base using PVA glue and the “wings” fitted in place with a little non-fogging superglue run into the joint to keep them in position. The figure, dog and helmet were also glued in place with PVA once a suitable position and pose had been decided. I have had great fun in building and painting this model and it is nice to know that a British manufacturer is producing original design models to such a high level of quality. ●

The figure that comes with the kit was modified into a standing pose. Wild House Models can be purchased from www. wildhousemodels.com

The Editor’s Page... Neat and tidy wings for a Tomcat please!

GETTING IN A BIT OF A FLAP

A

s you'll see in this issue, Tamiya have created an all-new kit of the famous US Navy jet fighter, the Grumman F-14A Tomcat. The aircraft was elevated to near iconic status when the 1986 film ‘Top Gun’ was released, forever cementing it in peoples minds as a handsome, glamorous machine and about as American as one can get. Tamiya chose the 2016 Shizuoka Hobby Show to unveil their latest 1:48 creation (about time, I hear some say) but within minutes, there were critical voices commenting on the model's control surfaces and leading-edge slats, which, as can be seen in photos of the prototype model at the show, will be moulded integrally with the outer wing-sections instead of being offered as individual parts. From fairly mildmannered comments to full-blown opprobrium on internet modelling

forums, this supposedly missed opportunity by Tamiya's designers seems to have caused considerable concern. Everyone is, of course, entitled to their opinion but Tamiya have done this for a very specific reason. The vast majority of modellers will build their Tomcats in the 'landed' configuration, ie; with undercarriage extended, wings folded and by therefore the flaps and slats are retracted.

The model is set up to make this depiction as realistic and hassle-free as possible. Having the flaps and slats moulded individually would mean extra complication and although there are rarely fit-problems in Tamiya kits, it could introduce a possible margin of error that would make the 'parked' mode less easy to represent. I totally get that modellers (including myself) love to have separately moulded flaps, slats and elevators in kits of aircraft that would often exhibit 'drooped' control surfaces after powerdown, but in the case of the mighty F-14A, these items were almost always tidily tucked away when landed on a carrier deck. Tamiya are just helping us to make it look accurate, and very cool too! ● See you again next time editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com
