Takom have answered many people's prayers with the news of a newly-tooled M3 Lee and M3 Grant in 1:35. From the boxtop artwork, we can see that the M3 Lee will include markings for a Soviet machine from the Lend-Lease programme of WW2 and it will surely include US markings too among the four options. There's no interior, but the hatches can be fitted open or closed and the tracks come in the form of 'link-and-length' runs. The British Grant will have the cast turret plus the appropriate markings, although the crew figures shown in both box illustrations will not be included. More news soon. www.pocketbond.co.uk

56TH SHIZUOKA HOBBY SHOW, JAPAN 2017
SHIZUOKA HOBBY SHOW 2017 Last issue we took a look at the new Tamiya items shown at this year's Shizuoka Hobby Show. Here are some of the other new kits exhibited at the event
A
FV Club showed off their new-tool 1:35 M113 APC which looks very promising indeed. It will come with a full interior and the full complement of ACAV hardware atop the hull. AFV Club's specialist division 'Hobby Fan' have produced a 1:35 Vietnam War-period 'Hurricane Aircat' airboat in resin and this will make a fantastic centrepiece for a 'Brown Water Navy' diorama, once you get past the hefty price-tag. Aoshima/Beemax seem to be the most energetic model car producers these days and they have some appealingly off-beat subjects on the way, including the quirky '85 Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 short wheelbase and the Volvo 240 Turbo from the '86 Macau GP, both in 1:24. The new 1:20 Brabham BT52 1983 Monaco GP is sure to go down well with F1 modellers. Ebbro have taken a brief break from their usual four-wheel subjects and have created a 1:48 kit of the HondaJet HA-420, a pretty executive-jet with unconventional over-wing engine mounts. The kit will have cabin detail and fold-out boarding steps. Studio 27 showed a few new 1:20 car kits, including the 1976 (Ligier) JS5, (Brabham) BT44B and Tyrrell Ford 007, plus their superdetail set for Tamiya's re-released Tyrrell P34 six-wheeler. Please note that we have obscured the sponsors' markings on the JS5 to conform to laws in some countries where TMMI is sold; the kit does come with the full decals. Zoukei Mura exhibited their new 1:48 F-4S Phantom II kit which, now we have received the review sample, looks extremely highly detailed. It comes with decals for a VF-161 machine off USS Midway, 1981 and looks very smart indeed. More was unveiled too, some of which we managed to squeeze onto the following pages! â—?

Vintage Tamiya boxtop artwork is simply the best. The kit is forty-two years old and still an excellent production
O
riginally this model was meant to be for a group build competition on Facebook. The competition rules were that it had to be an 'out of the box' build with no after-market accessories. However, I ended up breaking the grenade mesh cover and had to buy an Eduard photo etch replacement. As this was not part of the rules I decided to pull out of the competition. I really love the look of this vehicle as the 'buggy' shape of it reminds me of something out of Mad Max or Star Wars. Once I’d decided to make this kit, I had to make a decision on a camouflage scheme. I decided to go for Tamiya Dark Yellow as a base coat with dark green wiggly lines (I can’t find a better word to
An overall basecoat of XF-53 German Grey started things off; it was applied to all parts
describe them!). Once that was decided, it was time to get started on the build.
EASY BUILD-UP
As this was a Tamiya kit, I knew I wasn’t going to run into too many difficulties when putting it together, even though it is a very old model. Construction went really well with no problems. So, airbrush at the ready, I decided to use the hairspray chipping technique as I like the effect created by it. To start, I laid down a base coat of Tamiya German grey which acts as the colour that will reveal itself once the upper layer has been chipped off. This was left to dry for twenty-four hours before I returned to the kit and applied two coats of clear varnish to protect the base coat. Once again,
this was left for twenty-four hours to fully cure. Using a can of shop-bought hairspray (not my girlfriend’s!) I coated the whole kit twice, letting each coat dry in between. Once this had dried completely, I could start applying my pre-chosen camouflage. Tamiya Dark yellow was first applied all over. I wanted to create an effect to simulate faded panels caused by the sun and for this, I took Tamiya Dark Yellow, added a couple of drops of Tamiya Flat White to lighten the shade and then airbrushed it to the centre of each panel to show wear. The Tamiya dark green was then applied in thin wiggly lines over the top of this coat. Due to the use of the hairspray technique, I had to be quick with the application of the
camouflage, as the longer the paint is left on top of the hairspray layer, the harder it is to chip. Once the camouflage was touch-dry I moistened the area that I wanted to chip with warm water using a medium-stiff brush. This was left for a couple of minutes to allow it to soak into the paint and then with my brush (the same one as earlier), I gently started to scrub the ‘chipping’ area. As you can see on the model, the effects are realistic because it is actual paint chipping, as you would see on the real thing. This is why I concentrated on areas of the kit that would get the most wear and tear, such as edges of hatches and equipment. After I was happy with the chipping effect, I left this to dry overnight.

Mini Review... WILDER WEATHERING OILS ITEM NO. LS41, LS42, LS43, LS44, LS45 www.airbrushes.com
Adam Wilder’s brand ‘Wilder’ has added five new flesh-toned oil paints to the range of weathering oils formulated to help the modeller paint the faces and hands of model figures. They are branded as ‘fast drying’ and as ‘matt’ which is just what we want when painting. It’s best to apply an undercoat of matt white or flesh-coloured acrylic paint then use the oils on top. The only slight puzzle with these paints is a noticeable grittiness in their texture, which could be useful if the colours were mud or rust-shades, but for painting areas of skin this seems a little strange.

Over the dark grey, the author applied a layer of XF-60 Dark Yellow, lightened slightly with a drop or two of XF-2 Flat White
The green camouflage was next and for this, XF-61 Dark Green was employed
STEP: DECALS V NEXT Another clear coat was
applied to the model to protect my previous work and to give the kit a smooth surface for the decals to conform to. Using a small paint brush, I applied a small amount of MicroSet decal solution to the area where the decal would go. I placed the decal on the model, smoothed out any air bubbles with a cotton bud and then I softened it using Mr. Mark Softer so that it would conform to the surface of the kit. After all of the decals were applied, another clear coat was sprayed on to seal in and protect the decals.
NOW FOR THE WASHES
Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color (black) was used on the raised details across the kit, as well as panel lines, tools, storage, the fighting compartment and wheels. This makes the little details 'pop'! I wanted this vehicle to look and feel used, as if it had a story to tell. So, I decided to simulate grime streaking down from areas that I thought would get really dirty and full of muck. For this, I used AK Interactive streaking grime. This is a really easy to use enamel product, but you need to make sure that a clear coat has been applied
The Sd.Kfz.222’s main armament was painted individually to allow access to all areas of the gun
16

prior to use to protect prior work, as white spirit (or enamel thinner) is needed in order to produce the streaks. I gave the bottle a thorough shake and then with a small paintbrush took some of the grime, placed it on the focus area and pulled the grime down the kit in a sweeping motion with the brush. This was left to dry for a couple of minutes and then, using white spirit, I tidied up the streaks to make them appear how I wanted.
NOW TO GET DIRTY WITH MUD SPLATTERS AND PIGMENTS!
The whole model was given a coat of flat varnish via airbrush, as it's easier to apply pigments to a matt surface.. For this, I used Humbrol's weathering powders and AK interactive Fresh Mud enamel colour and weathering plaster base. Using Humbrol Dark Earth I started to apply the dry pigments, using a brush, to the lower areas of the vehicle. With Humbrol Black, I applied the pigments around the hatches and anywhere I thought that there might be shadows, in order to provide a 3D effect. 'Fresh mud' was then mixed with weathering plaster base to simulate textured mud splatters from the wheels and other vehicles. This was the first time that I had used the weathering plaster base and I was very impressed by its ease of use and the results. To create the mud splatters I simply dipped a flat-headed brush into the mix and then brushed this against a piece of cardboard, causing the mixture to splatter. Back to the reason why this wasn’t entered into the group build competition; the grenade cover. Once I had assembled the replacement Eduard grenade cover, I glued it to the model with superglue and airbrushed the inside Tamiya German grey, whilst the outside was airbrushed using Tamiya Dark green. I found this to be a good replacement that worked well with the Tamiya kit.

STOWAGE V EXTRA I decided to add a couple
of extra tools and pieces equipment from my spares box to add additional interest to the overall look. This included an axe, as well as a couple of German helmets. Additional storage was also created as a way of providing further visual interest to the build. This consisted of jerrycans, ammo boxes and a storage box filled with random items from my spares box. I needed to find a way to attach the stowage to the back of the build in a realistic way and so scratchbuilt a small platform for the storage to rest on top of. This was then tied down using model boat rigging (a really good substitute for rope on any kit that can be bought in various sizes). Inside the storage box I also
decided to add red cloth to provide colour contrast and draw the eye in. This was done by using plain tissue paper, airbrushed Tamiya red and then left to dry. Once dry, the cloth was cut to size and was dampened with water, making the tissue malleable. This was then placed into the storage box and moulded to shape. It was then coated with watered-down PVA glue and left to dry. I gave the cloth a coat of Citadel Agrax Earthshade, which is an acrylic colour-wash, creating the appearance of shadows in between the creases of the cloth and giving it more visual ‘bulk’. The draped tarpaulin at the front of the vehicle was created in the same way as the red cloth, but using Tamiya XF-63 German Grey.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The model was given a matt coat and it was finally complete! Overall, I really enjoyed this build and would recommend it to any modeller, regardless of your skill level. It was a lot of fun adding to the kit in order to tell a story and my advice to anyone is to not be scared to use your imagination when bringing the kit to life; try out new techniques, add additional items and make it how you want. Remember, if it looks good to you, then that’s all that matters! ● AVAILABILITY; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. fter the F4U-1 'Birdcage' and F4U-1A, it seemed likely but not inevitable that Tamiya would complete the trio of famous Corsairs. We did have to wait a while, but now it has arrived we can examine the box contents to see how this third version differs from the previous two. Perhaps the key visual difference that distinguishes the 'D from its earlier brothers is frameless design of the main 'blown' canopy; the sliding section. Of course it's not completely without a frame, but the two upper reinforcing strips were deleted, giving the pilot an uninterrupted view

sideways and above, a significant safety factor when in aerial combat. Less obvious changes include the twin hard-points on the aircraft's underside, used for carrying a pair of drop-tanks or bombs. Hard-points were also built into the outer wings to allow the fitting of eight, five-inch High Velocity Aircraft Rockets (HVAR), four on each side. A fairing was added to the tailwheel doors to improve aerodynamics, the bomb-aiming window in the fuselage belly (the Corsair had no cockpit floor) was filled in with sheet aluminium and the propeller was redesigned with thicker blade roots.
LOOKING DIFFERENT
All of these structural changes are reflected in Tamiya's kit of course, and whilst they are quite subtle, the addition of a Glossy Sea Blue (FS15042) paint job and late-war markings will really change the appearance of the model, allowing it to stand out when placed alongside the other two Corsairs in one's model collection. Just two decal options are provided in the kit, an FG-1D (a Goodyear-built machine) from VF-84 US Navy off the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill, Iwo Jima, February 1945 and an F4U-1D from VMF-351 US Marine Corps, USS Cape Gloucester,

KIT PREVIEW
TAMIYA 1:35 SD.KFZ.166 STURMPANZER IV BRUMMBÄR SPÄTE PRODUKTION ● KIT NO.35353
GRUMPY OLD GROUCH! Once you’ve seen Tamiya’s new 1:35 Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär, you certainly won’t be grumpy!
T
amiya have had a Brummbär – the vehicle’s Allied reporting name, which roughly translates from German as ‘grouch’ – in their catalogue for over forty years, as Item No.35077. This kit depicted the ‘early’ version with flat frontal armour and was an excellent production for its time. Now, for 2017, the company has created a new kit of this WW2 German assault vehicle, a perennially popular subject with modellers perhaps for its pugnacious looks and powerful fighting capability. The new kit employs the (excellent) lower hull moulding from Tamiya’s 1994 Pz.IV, but otherwise all mouldings are new. As this depicts the ‘Späte’ (late) production variant, the kit’s casemate features the armoured machine-gun extension on the upper-left of the front panel, the key differentiating factor between early and later builds. Also provided are all-steel roadwheels that were fitted to these machines. The model’s 15cm main gun is fitted
in an articulated mount (with polycap bearings) that replicates the limited traverse/elevation of the original, but other than this, there is nothing else inside the hull. Tamiya’s modular approach to the Panzer IV’s complex suspension bogies is entirely sensible and rational; the detail is barely compromised (just the layered leaf-spring pattern needs adding to the ‘blunt’ end of the spring-stack) and they are a plug-and-play moulding that won’t drive you crazy during assembly. If there was a slight disappointment in this kit is the one-piece tracks. In themselves they are as good as they get, sporting great detail, but for a dry-tracked vehicle with exposed upper runs (if the schürzen is left off or only partially fitted), I think Tamiya’s excellent link-and-length parts would have been more suitable. At least there are options out there, such as Friulmodel’s metal links, that can be used on this model. Two figures are included with the model; one full crewmember and a partial driver figure. Tamiya’s 1:35
figurines have improved beyond recognition in the last few years and these really are of a very high standard. Late Sturmpanzer IVs were usually zimmerited and Tamiya have released a set of self-adhesive decals with a 3D zimmerit pattern to help in its replication. It looks pretty convincing (the main photo here shows it in place) but you can always apply your own without too much fuss, using putty. To sum up, Tamiya’s 1976 Brummbär has been well and truly replaced, and kit No.35077 can retire, with many years of modelling satisfaction under its belt. The new kit is better in every aspect and thanks to Tamiya’s engineering prowess it can be built quickly and enjoyably. Highly recommended. ● AVAILABILITY; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. UK import and distribution by The Hobby Company Limited; www.hobbyco.net

uilt to replace the Royal Navy’s ageing Type 42 destroyers in the air defence role, the Daring class of six ships were designed for defence against multiple air attacks, being able to track and engage more than one threat at a time. Significantly larger than the older Type 42 vessels, the Darings do have a smaller radar signature, due to the fact that most small fixtures such as railings, sea boats etc. are hidden behind screens on the vessel’s superstructure, giving a very angular and clean silhouette and thus smaller radar signature. With its emphasis on the anti-aircraft role, it is equipped with various ship to air missile systems, Phalanx 20mm close weapons system and 4.5 in Mark 8 naval gun. When required can be fitted with Tomahawk cruise missile launchers. The ships are also equipped with either the Lynx or Merlin helicopter. The Airfix kit offers several options to the modeller; the hull can be built either waterline or full and while the former option has no base plate provided, the modeller can make their own. The sea boat and aircraft hangars can be either opened or closed, the accommodation ladders can be retracted or deployed over the hull sides and the Tomahawk missile launchers are supplied, should you wish to fit them.

The comprehensive decal sheet provides markings to depict any of the ships in the class and HMS Dragon's large red Welsh dragon is also provided for both sides of the bow. This is the option I chose for the review model. The kit parts are rendered with plentiful surface detail but in my

sharper. Some parts are a little over scale but this is due to the limitations of the injection moulding process. The various hangars have some good basic detail inside that can be enhanced by the modeller if they wish to do so. I chose to build the model as HMS Dragon in waterline. To augment the kit, I used several replacement/detail sets from White Ensign Models and Veteran Models. From WEM I used the main photo-etched brass detail set, replacement cast resin Mark 8 4.5 inch gun and cast resin Lynx helicopter. From Veteran Models I used the company's SLQ-32 ECM and SRBOC chaff (VTM35010) to replace the kit's rather amorphous mouldings. Besides replacing parts using the updates, I also scratchbuilt some antennae arrays using stretched sprue. I started by assembling the main hull components and also made a base plate from plastic card to fill the void under the hull. Moving on, I assembled the sea boat and aircraft hangars, choosing to display the aircraft and one sea boat hangar open. WEM supply a series of parts for these areas that really add that missing detail; these areas were painted before being enclosed. I quickly realised that this was not going to be a straightforward build, as the hull and superstructure parts didn’t fit seamlessly together. Instead, significant join line was formed between the parts that would have to be filled and carefully sanded to blend together, in fact virtually every exterior panel had this problem. I resorted to fitting as much as possible to hull before fitting the hull sides together. With the superstructure built, it was then enclosed between the hull sides, smoothing out the seams before adding any photo-etched parts.

With the various hangars painted and weathered, I moved onto fitting and smoothing-out the exterior hull panels and removing parts to be replaced by photo-etch from WEM's detail set. Airfix do actually supply the modeller with a bridge interior, but

no clear parts for windows, just bare frames. It's a nice touch but this is virtually unseen on the finished model so I didn’t bother painting this area, leaving the frames open until after painting when I filled them with PVA glue which dries to form a transparent film of skin. Finally, they were painted Tamiya X-5 Clear Green. Once all the panels were seamlessly in place on the hull and remaining details were assembled and fitted, it was time to get stuck into the WEM set. This replaces a multitude of kit parts, mainly panels, aerials and antennae and also the bases and frames for the Tomahawk cruise missile launchers. I decided to add these as they fit just in front of the bridge and without them it’s a bare-looking area. The Lynx helicopter and 4 inch gun parts were assembled; I didn’t use the kit examples as by this time I’d run out of patience and replaced everything possible.
TIME FOR SOME PAINT
White Ensign Models’ Lynx helicopter was used for this project, to good effect. It’s a resin casting with photo-etched rotors and looks spot-on
With everything fixed to the hull or in separate sub-assemblies, the whole model was primed with Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey and any remaining blemishes that became apparent were dealt with before spraying the black waterline-mark onto the hull. This was done freehand, because once dry, the area was masked off and the hull re-sprayed in XF-19 Sky Grey. It was also shaded using a lighter mix of the base XF-19 colour. After removing the masking, detail painting commenced touching in the deck colour, black areas on masts etc. Once complete, the model was sprayed with gloss varnish and the decals then applied. With all this dry, the model was re-sprayed with matt varnish to restore the correct lustre. Various colour-washes were applied used thinned-down black and raw umber artists oil paints to accentuate the surface details. Finally, the glazing was hand-painted using Tamiya clear paints. The rigging was fitted next using fine fishing line and thankfully there isn’t much. Once in place it was painted carefully by hand.

Lifecolor offer an extensive range of weathering paints and in recent years they have have packaged them up into themed six-packs. One of the latest to arrive is a set of six paints for the simulation of stone walls and other masonry, and the tones are well chosen to create the effect. In the flat box you’ll find Blue Stone (UA780), Brown Stone (UA781), Dark Sand Stone (UA782), Green Stone (UA783), Reddish Stone (UA784) and Light Stone (UA785). They can be airbrushed or hand-painted and are ideal for dioramas

SEASCAPE V DISPLAY To finish the model off, I mounted it
onto a base and sculpted a seascape around it. This was made with interior Polyfilla, a DIY dry-powder filler mixed with water to thick porridge consistency. It was applied used an old butter knife to create the basic wave forms and any accidental splashes up the hull were removed carefully before the filler dried. With the basic seascape cured, the edges were carefully sanded to remove any overspill. This done, I primed the seascape with an application of Payne’s Grey acrylic paint which was applied by hand, being careful not to cause splashes around the ship’s hull. When dry, a 'sea' colour was sprayed onto the surface, starting with Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue, then tiny patches and squiggles of XF-18 Medium Blue followed by crests of waves and disturbed water using XF-2 Flat White. When this was all dry I applied some artist's Liquitex Gloss Medium (varnish) and enhanced the wave effect using tiny pieces of cotton wool; when dry, the wool looks quite realistic. A final coat of gloss varnish was applied to the seascape, being wary to not overdo it, as disturbed water isn’t fully glossy.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This kit isn’t brilliant, in fact I’m a little disappointed with the quality of some parts, particularly as Airfix's new aircraft kits are really impressive these days. However, with some old fashioned modelling skills, a tube of filler and White Ensign Models' detail set, the model can be made into good-looking replica of the Royal Navy's Type 45 destroyer. ●

VALENTINE, DIALLED The Editor builds Tamiya's superb new 1:35 Valentine Mk.II/ IV and gives it a heavy weathering treatment using Mission Models’ fantastic new acrylic paints
B
ack in TMMI Issue 258 we asked the question “do we really need another 1:35 Valentine tank?”, and my answer was a emphatic “yes!”. Why? Because, aside from it being a new Tamiya kit and therefore by default, a desirable thing to purchase, it will on offer to many more modellers (including youngsters) who may not be too familiar with the design. As was proved back in 2003 with the 1:35 French WW2 Char B1 bis kit, Tamiya can create interest in a subject pretty much out of a vacuum; many have never heard of the Char B1 before Tamiya's release but nevertheless enjoyed the kit hugely and went on to building more French subjects. This has got to be a good thing, and while the British Valentine is not an obscure tank, it may not have been on the radar of many modellers until now.

HER UP V BUILDING As you can see from the grey plastic in
the pre-paint photos here, our kit was built from one of Tamiya's test-shots. The full production kits are moulded in the more familiar sand-coloured polystyrene but the detail and assembly sequence are exactly the same. The Valentine featured a bathtub hull with a shallow v-shape to its lower portions, reminiscent of modern MRAP designs. One can't help wondering if this offered any kind of mine deflection for the crew in combat. Let's hope so. The kit's hull builds up from the belly section and two side panels, with an internal stiffener halfway along its length. End panels are added to this, creating a very rigid sub-structure; once cemented in place, the upper deck adds to this robustness. The engine cooling vents on the upper deck are moulded individually, by far the best approach to this area of the model, allowing for a full undercut beneath each one for maximum realism. They fit almost perfectly with just a tiny amount of Mr Surfacer 500 was painted in at their ends to fill hairline gaps where they meet the rest of the engine deck. The driving compartment hatches are individual parts and can be posed open, although there is nothing inside to see. A driver figure would fill the void perfectly and it's not difficult to source one from aftermarket suppliers. I used the kit-supplied hatch and grab handles on the review model as I was determined to keep it standard as possible, which, apart from the addition of lead wire for the crews figures' headphone cables, stretched sprue aerials and the lead foil on the gun barrel cover, I think I achieved. The suspension of the Valentine (and other WW2 British tanks) is quite distinctive and requires methodical assembly so that the wheels will eventually all line up. Even in this modern Tamiya kit, I chose to temporarily mount the wheels while the suspension parts dried overnight, just to make sure. The result is actually quite a sturdy structure, even if they look spindly and fragile. The roadwheels come in to different sizes and to complicate things further, the idlers are almost identical to the larger wheels, differentiated by a small fitting (greasing point?) on the tip of their hubs. Handy that. Only the drive sprockets make use of internal polycaps to hold them in place, so you'll be cementing the wheels in place when it's time. This is fine, but make sure they are perfectly aligned when you do so, and check them halfway through the drying time to make sure they are still at the correct angle. It's best to place the model on a perfectly flat surface (a piece of glass or a spare bathroom tile) and leave it to set overnight.
32
The kit's turret comes with an extremely realistic cast-steel texture in the appropriate areas, with raised bolt-heads. There isn't any internal detail here, just a pair of tabs to support the two crew figures
The 2pdr gun can elevate thanks to the use of a polycap on the righthand side trunnion, seen here in black
In this view the frontal face of the turret (in reality, a cast steel component) has been cemented to the main structure. We can just make out the casting texture on the sides and front portion, as well as the mantlet. There's a mass of detail here, which responds extremely well to colour washes
The Valentine tank has very distinctive drive sprockets, featuring a prominent central drum that contained parts for the final drive. In Tamiya's kit, the ribbed drum is moulded in two halves and thus requires careful assembly so the ribs line up. With the use of liquid cement, the joint becomes almost invisible, just requiring some gentle sanding once dry to conceal the seams
The sprockets mount to their hubs via polycaps which holds them in place with exactly the right level of friction. The detail in this area is fantastic, with rings of bolts in all the right places
Tamiya have depicted the engine-deck hot-air vents as individual mouldings, allowing a completely realistic overhang. A little Mr Surfacer 500 was applied here to close up a hairline gaps where each 'rib' met the superstructure
Tamiya have replicated the Valentine’s suspension bogies with great detail but not an overwhelming number of parts. Once the bogies have been built up and fixed to the hull, it’s worth temporarily mounting the wheels so the axles all line up, while the cement is still soft
Head-one view of the turret, showing the fantastic detail on its roof
The row of ventilation holes seen here will be covered with a rain shroud, but they can still just be seen. The cast-steel texture is visible here too

The only weak point of the kit is the gun barrel, whose muzzle is a separate part and thus tricky to perfectly line up with the rest of the gun tube. A canvas cover made from metal foil was added here, to conceal my slight misalignment.
Through some test-fitting and jiggery-pokery, it was discovered that the track-guards could be assembled but not cemented to the hull, allowing their removal for track fitment later. This greatly helped the painting processes but it's not in the instructions!
The tracks come in the form of 'links and lengths', an approach used with great success by Tamiya and with their engineering prowess they fit perfectly. I always prefer to paint my tanks' tracks off the model (I just don't understand how some modellers get such great results by painting them in place!), and this is perfectly easy to do with this set. I assembled each side into upper and lower runs using tiny amounts of liquid cement so they wouldn't stick to the idlers and sprockets and when dry, carefully peeled them off the model's suspension for painting. As well as they work, I still prefer metal individual links, but that's just because I like they way they look. So the tank could be painted and weathered as a whole and the tracks fitted later, I chose to build up the track guards so they could be removed then repositioned from the model. This is possible with this kit but it's not a recommended part of the assembly sequence and they do need some gentle manipulation to take on and off. I also left the exhaust box and its shroud loose so it could be painted separately; I prefer to airbrush the 'box on its own and it would have been a fiddle to mask it off if glued in at the stage suggested. It's an easy drop-in fit, as is the cowling over it. I did fix all the on-vehicle tools (not as many as you'd
In this rear view of the nearly assembled model, we can see that the pioneer tools are already cemented in place. When one can gain full access to paint them, painting in situ is usually the best way, but if the tools are awkward to reach, paint them off the model and attach later
A thinned application of Mr Surfacer was applied to completely seal the joints where the outer portions of the track guards meet the upper sections. Otherwise, the review model was built completely unmodified
The turret is complete here, now fitted with its periscopes, spent cartridge hatch and gun barrels
The exhaust shroud is fitted, but where's the exhaust box? The shroud was left loose so the rusty exhaust could be airbrushed and weathered on its own. It was fitted during the final assembly stages

V find on a German tank of the same era) before painting commenced as I had easy access to paint them. If the tools are tricky to reach with a paint brush, do not be afraid to paint them off the model and fix in place during final assembly using matt varnish instead of paint. It will dry overnight and will hold the parts on firmly enough, so long as they are not poked or prodded. The turret is a highlight of this kit, carrying some extremely punchy detail and texturing. In 1:35, even on a fairly rough steel casting, the texture won't be all that apparent and Tamiya have got it just right here. The 2pdr main gun can elevate thanks to the use of a single polycap within its trunnion, although given the opportunity I would have replaced the barrel with a one-piece metal item. The kit is moulded with a separate muzzle and even with the best eyesight and tweezers, it's tricky to align perfectly. I wasn't happy with my alignment (yep, failing eyesight and sausage fingers) so I placed a little canvas dust cover over the muzzle using lead foil.
As we can see here, it is possible to build up the track guard in their entirety before they are finally fixed to the hull, giving the modeller full access to the lower hull sides, running gear and tracks for painting
CREW MEMBERS
By my own admission, I am a terrible figure painter, but I was determined to use the two crew figures supplied with the model as they are excellent. Figures always transform a tank from an inanimate object to something alive and it's worth having a crack at them, even if they are so-so. Lead wire was used for the cables to the headphones and commander's mic and I think they add a lot to the model, even with my limited skills.

TIME TO PAINT
For Tamiya's Valentine tank I chose to give Mission Models' new range of acrylic paints a spin, as they had arrived for review quite recently and I was intrigued to see how they would perform. After applying the green and then sand colour (see photos and captions) I was mightily impressed by them; they are not just another generic acrylic in a fancy bottle, but are very refined indeed with virtually zero texture. The mix was diluted with just a few drops of the company's own Thinner/ Reducer (MMA-002), plus a drop of their Polyurethane Mix Additive (MMA-001). The thinner is powerful so you only need to use a little; much less than you might thin Tamiya Acrylics with X20A. I also added a drop of Mission's Polyurethane Mix Additive (MMA-001) which further helps the flow. The paint's coverage was astonishing, but unlike heavily pigmented paints there was no chalkiness upon drying, just a very smooth, even colour delivery that I could build up layer by later without flooding the surface detail. I am deeply impressed by these paints and I shall definitely be using them again on forthcoming projects. A green undercoat was applied first and Mission Model's Olivegrun (MMP-009) was used here. This colour would be largely covered up by the sand paint so the exact shade was not really important. A layer of AK Interactive 'Heavy Chipping' fluid was then airbrushed on (cheap hairspray will work too) and once dry, the Light Stone was then layered on. Actually, I didn't have this specific colour to hand (Mission Models now offer it; MMP-044) so I used German Gelbbraun (MMP-010) which is close. As you can see from the photos, the top colour was applied in varying densities in preparation for the 'worn and scrubbed' effect that would be created by partially washing off the paint. The intention here was to create an extremely abraded effect where the desert paint had worn and peeled off from the weather, maintenance and general crew transit. In hindsight I think I might have overdone this, but at least the tank looks like it has seen a bit of action. Three markings schemes are provided in the box; one British vehicle No.3 (T.47242) from an unknown unit in the North African desert 1941/2 and two Soviet Lend-Lease machines. The review model was given no markings, to tie in with the very worn sand-coloured paint; they would have been painted over. That's my theory anyway.
U
For this project, Mission Models’ new range of acrylic paints was chosen for finishing. The intention was to create a very battered effect where the desert paint had worn and peeled off from the weather, maintenance and general crew transit.
A green undercoat would be needed and Olivegrun (MMP-009) was chosen; it would be mostly covered anyway so the exact shade was not too important. Using the Mission Models paint came as a pleasant surprise. It was almost grainless and flowed freely through the airbrush (Iwata HP-CH), thinned with some of the company's own Thinner/Reducer (MMA-002), plus a drop of their Polyurethane Mix Additive (MMA-001)
Once the green had fully dried, the whole model was given a layer of AK Interactive's 'Heavy Chipping Acrylic Fluid', although regular hairspray can be used too, either applied direct form the can or decanted and airbrushed. This creates a water-soluble mask over which the colour coats are applied
The chipping fluid dry/ hairspray creates a rather unsightly semi-gloss effect, but don't panic, this will be covered by subsequent paint and weathering layers later on in the process

FULL BUILD: ARMOURED FIGHTING VEHICLE TAMIYA 1:35 BRITISH INFANTRY TANK MK.III VALENTINE MK.II/IV ● KIT NO.A12203
The Gelbbraun was applied in thin layers, allowing it to build up in recesses that would be less affected by abrasion and the weather. Think 'pre-shading' in reverse and you'll be on the right track! The thinner the layer of top colour, the more easily it will come off in the next step, so bare this in mind when airbrushing
Mission Models' paint range is constantly expanding and includes a good range of colours, but the correct British Light Stone was not available at the time of building, so the colour seen here is actually one from the opposition! (German Gelbbraun RAL 8020, MMP-101)
The 'desert yellow' is now on and we can see an almost solid coat, but with distinct areas of light application. Not that the wheels were painted at the same time
The wash-off stage has begun; a wide, flat paintbrush has been dipped in tap water and is being used to scour off the sand-coloured paint, revealing the green beneath. Work on areas that would receive the most mechanical wear, such as the tops of the engine deck vents, edges and top of turret (crew would often stand on the turret rood to gain a better view) and on the edges of tool boxes that would be in constant use
One driver’s hatch was left slight ajar (a jammed hinge?), to show that these parts are separate mouldings in Tamiya’s new kit. Note the hatch edges were given extra wear and tear, as well as their handles
36
It looks a little extreme here, but the effect is clear to see. If you feel you have overdone the effect, it’s easy to go back in with the airbrush and re-apply the sand colour to even out the effect. With the basic colours and weathering achieved, the standard processes of colour-washes – both overall and localised – were employed to further the ‘dirtying down’ of the Valentine. Here the modeller can really go to town and make the model as mucky as they wish!

WE NEED ANOTHER? V DID Tamiya have, yet again, worked
wonders with this new kit of the British Valentine tank. They have balanced perfectly a satisfying level of complexity with ease and speed of assembly, with just enough parts to achieve a refined appearance straight from the box. The joy of these kits is that they can be built with such ease and they don't fight you along the way. If you then choose to add your own extra detailing, the process can be treated as a luxurious pleasure, rather than a tedious necessity, which is surely what we all want from a modern model kit? Yes, we really did need a Tamiya kit of the Valentine and I fully intend to build at least one more! Highly recommended. ●

www.aoadecals.com New from this American producer is a set of decals for Kittyhawk's 1:32 OV-10A Bronco. The sheet provides markings for seventeen aircraft, some variation of the same machine from different periods of its lifetime. The set appears extremely well researched and comes with clear information on the decals' placements as well as a comprehensive set of data stencils, with a guide too. The quality is fantastic and the set will be a great way to add authenticity to the model. BLACK PONIES & MORE BRONCOS, USN/USMC OV-10A BRONCOS IN THE VIETNAM WAR ERA (32-004)

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk www.hannants.co.uk So, what exactly do you get in an Eduard 'Big Ed' pack? As far as the flat items (photo-etched brass and masking sets) you are treated to all of the manufacturer’s detail sets available for the subject, be that an aircraft, AFV or ship. This is not only very convenient but also offers a costs saving for the modeller because if bought individually the overall price would be higher than the Big Ed set. Here we are taking a look at the set for Tamiya's recently launched 1:48 F-14A Tomcat and inside you will find exterior details (panels with grilles, wiring looms, ventilation panels and more), engines (afterburner flame-holders), interior (console and instrument panel faces, fuse-boards, inner canopy framework and canopy locks) seatbelts (including ejector-seat pulls) and of course Eduard's ever-useful masking set for the kit. All parts are tailormade for the model and each sub-set comes with detailed instructions. Big Eds are a great way to buy all the bits you need in one go and save money too. 1:48 BIG ED F-14A (BIG49169) FOR TAMIYA

www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk www.hannants.co.uk Eduard have created a vast suite of photo-etched and resin upgrades for Tamiya's sublime 1:32 DH Mosquito FB Mk.VI but surely the icing on the cake must be this exquisite leftside Merlin engine in the company's 'Brassin' line. It comes is a good-sized box and the masses of resin castings are protected by a sheet of rubber-foam. We counted eighty-nine resin parts plus about eight more in photo-etched brass! The detail on the components is quite frankly breath-taking and the engine will require a significant amount of benchtime to assemble and paint, but the potential result it offers is incredible. Tamiya's standard Mossie engines are superb but this takes it to whole new level. 1:32 MOSQUITO FB MK.VI LEFT ENGINE (632092) FOR TAMIYA

www.airbrushes.com Lifecolor have released two new sets of paints, each comprising six, 22ml plastic pots of acrylic paint. The first we opened up was 'White Wood' and on first inspection all six paints appeared to the same colour - the variations here are very subtle but the set does at least mean you don't have to make multiple mixes yourself in order to simulate a bleached-out wood effect. Slightly more variation will be found in the 'Leaking and Stains' set although here we have two yellowgreens (Lime Green and Vegetable Origin Damp Yellow) that are practically identical. Still, the paints are of high quality and can be airbrushed or hand-painted equally well WHITE WOOD (CS38) LEAKING AND STAINS (CS39)

SCALE MOTORSPORT, USA
www.scalemotorsport.com Scale Motorsport is a company known for their no-compromise approach to its products, offering levels of detail and precision that few others can match. They don't release new items all that often but when they do, they are spectacular, as is the case with this mega-detail set for Revell's 1:25 Corvette C7R model. In the very slick presentation case we find four stunning, CNC-milled billet racing wheels onto which the standard kit tyres fit. Behind these are four 3D printed brakes with cast resin callipers plus a sheet of photoetched nickel-steel carrying grilles, engine details, brake rotor faces and other small fittings. Lathe-turned metal parts feature and also in the box is a beautifully printed sheet of decals for the car. TAMIYA, JAPAN
IJN DESTROYER SHIMAKAZE www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:700 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.31460 Tamiya’s new-tool 1:700 IJN Destroyer Shimakaze comes on two sprues of mid-grey polystyrene and is, of course, waterline only. It looks like a quick build unless you wish to add your own aftermarket photo-etched railings, ladders, stairs, masts etc. The hull halves are nicely detailed and include the degaussing gear along their sides, in finely raised detail. The ship’s deck guns are extremely finely formed too. Construction starts with the main superstructure and it’s moulded in two halves to which the detail parts are added, all straightforward stuff. Tamiya provide a metal weight to fix to the hull plate and this gives the model a little more heft when it’s being handled; it’s a long established tradition. A very well detailed little kit of this high-speed destroyer. All-new mouldings, finely detailed deck guns, clear instructions The deck’s non-slip cross-hatching looks quite large
AMUSING HOBBY, JAPAN
30.5CM MÖRSER BÄR www.modellbau-koenig.de SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, CW, WS ITEM NO.35A014 The Sturmpanzer ‘Bär’ was a proposal that mounted the 30.5cm howitzer in a large, four-sided casemate at the rear of the hull. The hull and running gear were based on the design of the Tiger II, but with the engine moved forward to accommodate the weapon. Amusing Hobby are known for their kits of ‘paper panzers’ so this machine fits into their catalogue perfectly and it’s a mighty fine production. The box is packed with lightgrey styrene sprues, many of which are for the suspension system. This features lateral torsion bars at the front of the hull, which in theory allow the swing-arms to operate. At the rear, a vast leaf-spring arrangement is utilised to take the weight of the gun and its housing. There’s no internal detail, just a basic mount for the gun barrel and its inner mantlet. The detail on the external areas of the hull is superb, very much Dragon and Tamiya in quality. Photoetched engine screens are included and the tracks come in the form if individual links. Well detailed throughout with engine screens in the form of PE brass parts Link-by-link tracks can be a fiddle to assembly but they are of the click-together type

THUNDER MODEL, CHINA
US ARMY LOADER www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, SVT, WS ITEM NO.TM35002 We looked at Thunder Model’s beautiful little Case VAI tractor last issue and were impressed by its refinement and delicacy. It comes with very fine injection mouldings for the various control levers, link rods and more. The engine has a photoetched radiator fan and just needs ignition cabling to look perfect. As we said last time, “the US manufacturer Case built over 15,000 specialpurpose and modified tractors for the US military in forty different types and it was a common sight in many locations” and this version, fitted with a hydraulic front bucket is just one of them. The new parts are remarkably comprehensive, featuring hydraulic lift gear, valves and control-levers in PE and the whole rig can be posed in various positions. A very neat version and something slightly unusual for your diorama.
TAKOM, CHINA
T29E3 US HEAVY TANK www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, CW, WS ITEM NO.2064 To counter the menace of the Tiger II and Jagdtiger towards the end of WW2, US designers came up with the T29 heavy tank concept, based on an extended M26 Pershing hull and equipped with a 105mm main gun, in a vast new turret. Takom have created not just the T29E3 but also its brother the T30/34 and both kits are rather spectacular. The hull is a long moulding but perhaps not as bulky as you might expect, as it was based on the nonsponson Patton design. The turret however is huge and its fixed binocular rangefinder gives it even more width. Takom haven’t bothered with working suspension which, in our minds, is a good thing, as it keeps the underpinnings simple and robust. The tracks come as link and lengths and again this will speed assembly, although the parts will have to be carefully snipped from their sprues to avoid damaging the track pin ends.
An interesting version with a surprisingly high number of parts for the conversion
It’s a big, intimidating tank and will look impressive in the display cabinet. Nicely done cast steel texture in the appropriate areas
Vinyl tyres are not universally liked, resin castings would be preferable
Link-length tracks will need carefully clean-up and even re-detailing in some areas TMMI 262 August 2017

REVELL, EUROPE
FOCKE-WULF FW190A-8 A-8/R11 www.revell.de/en SCALE 1:32 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.03926 Revell’s 1:32 aircraft series has been reinvigorated in recent years and their output is consistently of a high standard. The Fw190F-8 was released just two years ago (how time flies) and now we have a revised edition of the kit converting it into the nightfighter A-8/A-8R11 variant. The kit is moulded in Revell’s distinctive light greenishgrey polystyrene which, although quite soft and pliable, holds detail well and bonds perfectly with your choice of model cement. The most noticeable difference to the ‘F-8 is the addition of FuG217 Neptun J-2/FuG218 Neptun J-3 radar arrays under the wings, and these are moulded with remarkable finesse by Revell. Frustratingly, the canopy sprues (x3) come in a single plastic bag with the canopy hoods facing inwards, so their top portions rub against the third sprue. Some faint scratching could be seen and this can easily be polished out, but if the hoods were facing outwards, they’d be less prone to damage.
BANDAI, JAPAN
STAR WARS AT-AT Online sources SCALE: 1:144 MATERIALS: IM ITEM NO.0214476 Bandai’s latest Star Wars creation in kit-form is surely one of the most recognisable pieces of hardware from the film series; the All-Terrain Armoured Transport, or AT-AT for short. This piece of Imperial weaponry is an icon of cinema and kits of it have been released over the years, but Bandai have added their special touch with the release of this relatively compact model. The multipart legs allow the vehicle to be take on different poses, including the face-plant ‘fallen’ state illustrated on the box side and as we have come to expect with Bandai’s SW kits, the detail is absolutely stunning, putting many kits of conventional subjects to shame. The manufacturer has completely mastered the dark art of injection-moulding and it shows in this and other models of theirs. The model comes with a pair of ‘drivers’ (pilots?), plus a display base moulded in white plastic to simulate a section of Hoth, the ice planet.
Great version, fine detail and at around £30, extraordinary value for money
Wonderful subject, beautifully executed engineering and supersharp detail
The radar mouldings are good, but superdetailers might wish to refine them with brass rod or aftermarket parts
The inclusion of Bandai’s lovely little 1:144 Snowspeeder would have been the perfect touch

GERMAN BERGEPANZER HETZER LATE www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, R, CC, WC, WS ITEM NO.TM35101 The Jagdpanzer 38(t) ‘Hetzer’ is an evergreen modelling subject in all its forms so this new kit of the recovery version is sure to prove popular. The upper deck was removed in this variant, and a massive winch added in the fighting compartment, dominating the interior. Thunder Model’s kit provides the winch hardware as well as the driver’s compartment structures; gearbox, steering brakes etc., but the modeller will need to add stuff such as cabling, stowed tools and other items that might be found inside otherwise it might look a little stark. An engine is provided and it is thoroughly fitted out with ancillaries; it can all be shown off too thanks to separately moulded engine access panels. The model comes with the moveable crane that sits on three reinforced hard-points on the upper hull plates and with it erected the model will look all the more eye-catching. The addition of the large earth-anchor at the rear completes the kit giving it a very different appearance to the standard machine.
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
CRUSADER LIMITED EDITION www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, R, PE, WS, PCM ITEM NO.11110 In this limited edition release, Eduard have used the injectionmoulded polystyrene parts from Hasegawa’s excellent 2003 release of the Vought F-8E Crusader and have added their own superdetail parts in the form of a resin ejection seat, pre-coloured photoetched cockpit side consoles, seat harnesses, ejector pulls, instrument panel plus other small PE details and resin wheels/brakes. The base kit is still a top-notch production, with finely moulded airframe parts carrying recessed panel lines and raised detailed where appropriate, all to a thoroughly modern standard. Add to this Eduard’s metal and resin upgrades plus a large and delicious Cartograf-printed decal sheet that offers four US Nay and one US Marines markings options and you can’t go far wrong.
An unusual version of the little tank-hunter and a kit with a mass of detail parts in the box. Link-and-length tracks
Hasegawa’s already excellent plastic parts get a boost from Eduard’s resin and PE
A little more ‘gizmology’ within the winch compartment would add to this area
Quite pricey, but all you need apart from glue and paint is in the box TMMI 262 August 2017

AIRFIX, UK
JUNKERS JU87B-1 STUKA www.airfix.com SCALE: 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.A07114 Airfix have been doing some wonderful aircraft kits lately, in 1:72, 1:24 and 1:48 too. One of the more recent to arrive is their new-tool Ju87B-1 Stuka, the early variant that would have taken part in the invasions of Poland, western Europe and the Battle of Britain as well as elsewhere. For a 1:48 single-engined aircraft, the box is remarkably large and with the lid off we can see why. A full engine is provided along with the associated individual cowling panels; it’s a complex part of the airframe and Airfix have gone to some lengths to depict all of it. The spatted main undercarriage is another area that has been looked at very carefully; options are provided for the aircraft ‘in flight’ (stand not included) with uncompressed struts and no tyre flat-spots, and ‘landed’ with compressed legs and weighted tyres. This shows a lot of planning has been invested in this model and along with some other extremely neat touches, creates a superb and very modern kit of this Luftwaffe icon.
Extraordinary detail and some impressive touches go to create a pleasingly complex model Not a quick build, in a good way!

The parts are formed from a rather fetching pale lilac-grey styrene across nine sprues, plus one in clear. All airframe panel lines are subtly engraved and are appropriate for a 1:72 kit of the machine. The interior is complete from nose to tail, including a full bomb bay with internal structural elements, bomb racks and bombs. The ventral ball-turret isn’t just a pop-in item, it comes with a proper mount that hangs from the fuselage ceiling and the modular tail-gun position even includes ammunition feeds to the twin .50cal MGs. From our in-box inspection here this looks like a wonderful, exciting kit with an absolute ton of detail, so hats off to Airfix for really going to town on it. Now, who’s brave enough to add all that Eduard photo-etched brass inside..? Flawless subject, subtle exterior detail (apart from those four raised panels by the cockpit, which can be sanded down a bit) and a heap of detail inside Can we start building it now please?

S
pecial Hobby has produced a range of X-15s in different scales over the years and having built the 1:48 X-15 many years ago was excited when they released the 1:32 offering in 2007. This was upstaged with a ground dolly version with external tanks a year or so later. A lot more work would be required to build these additional items but would add colour to the finished model. The instructions are really the ‘Achilles heel’ within the kit. There are gaps in information here and there that leave you guessing and then running to the internet for pictorial views to help clarify certain areas. Lots of images on the 'net never quite show enough information to be certain and some museum pieces that should be taken with a pinch of salt. One case in point is the black band on the external tanks; is it just on one tank? Does this black
52
band go all the way around the tank? One of many questions left unanswered. And at this scale you can’t hide your guesswork.
WINGS
The wings are the first port of call. The trailing edges of the real X-15 wings have a blocky look that tapers to the wing tip. But when the kits parts were put together they looked a little too thick. These were sanded on the trailing edge to take out that some of that thickness. Wheel bay and nose undercarriage At this stage I decide not to attach the cockpit to part E13 to the wheel bay as per instructions. Treating these separately would give more control to adjust if required later. The nose undercarriage bay consists of four very basic parts; the two part side walls and the front and rear frames. These parts, even when cleaned up, didn’t fit with confidence. To help cover
The trailing edges of the real X-15 wings have a blocky appearance, but when the kits parts were mated they looked a little too thick so they were sanded on the trailing edge to reduce some thickness
The horizontal stabilisers are too short and need to be extended by just under 5mm in length. This was easily remedied by adding plastic card and sanding to shape

the gaps and imperfections, 0.5mm plastic card was laid against the side walls and floor. The bay would not be seen when the X-15 is sitting on the ground but in this scale it still needs to look busy, so some rudimentary detail was added with the aid of plastic card and various pieces of wire.
COCKPIT
The first thing to glue into place was the front plastic console, part E17, along
with its two side panels, parts E24 and E25. The next part (E3) was then fixed to the rear upper body, giving a starting point to work back from. Then the floor and bulkhead parts E8, E2 and E1 were cemented. This assembly could then be offered up to part E3. Thankfully part E8 locates into a slot at the top of the upper body. The assembled tub was then held in position with a piece of tape across part E8 and over the body.
This wasn’t cemented yet until I was happy with the fitting of the two side consoles. The control column was next. This part leaves a lot to be desired and looks like a piece of sprue with a deformed end. To address this, a new part was made using plastic rod, plastic card and Vallejo putty.
PILOT'S SEAT
The seat’s plastic parts are very basic and lack any surface detail. There are
To help cover the imperfections within the nose undercarriage bay, 0.5mm plastic card was cemented to the side walls and floor bay roof. Some detailing was added with wire and plastic strip
some resin parts to add to the seat which will help to some degree and there are also some PE harnesses, however these look too thin and weak compared to the bulky harness shown in photographs. However, the worst part is the main seat cushion. This would have been nice supplied in resin but we get a crude piece of plastic instead. Being quite a distinctive shape (and colour) this had to be replaced, so Sylmasta A+B
The cockpit tub received various enhancement to give it a busier feel

The pilot’s seat’s mouldings are very basic and lack surface detail, so plastic card and a new seat pad (from putty) were added
was used to create a V putty new seat.
Once dry the piece can be filed into a more detailed shape. The seat also required a head cushion; this was made from a thick piece of plastic card. Some hinges were also added to the stabilising fins as these are a prominent feature on the seat. The seat was painted with Tamiya XF-83 Medium Sea Grey with a few drops of XF-8 Flat Blue and the cushion parts were painted XF-7 Flat Red. The last parts of the cockpit requiring completion were the instrument console panels. Their faces are supplied in PE brass and they are very nicely done. A film with printed dials is also provided for the main console. The instrument
panels were painted an off-yellow as a museum X-15 showed. To help make the cockpit area look a bit busier, pieces of fuse wire and plastic card were added to the side walls and the rear shelf behind the seat. The seat and instrument panels were left off for now, to be added at the end of the build.
BUILDING THE BODY With the wheel bay and cockpit finished the fuselage can be assembled, which consists of four large parts. The instructions suggest assembling the

front and rear fuselage upper parts first, then doing the same with the lower fuselage parts. The central parts fitted very well and required no filler, but whilst test fitting the upper and lower fuselage, I realised that no matter how carefully the halves were put together, filler was going to be involved. At the rear of the fuselage there was a large trench to fill on the top of both sides; the challenge The instructions show the exhaust shroud fitted from the outside but the author chose to fix it from the inside instead
The airbrakes feature hydraulic piston detail, cast in resin. This requires careful assembly but once painted up looks excellent. Note the plastic card strip detail added by the author

here was how to limit the loss of surface detail. Strips of Tamiya tape were placed on each side of the trench to protect the detail before the filler was applied. Before the filler had dried, the tape was peeled off. It was then necessary to keep the sanding as localised as possible to limit damage to the surrounding detail. The rear exhaust housing (part B7) was next, along with the beautiful resin exhaust shroud. The instructions show the exhaust shroud being fitted from the outside onto the plastic housing, but this looked odd, so I decided to fix it from the inside instead. The small resin exhaust, part P1, has a large resin plug that needs to be removed, however it was

The kit comes with a roll of wire that needed to be unravelled and straightened. However, this barmy idea was dropped and brass rod was used for the tanks’ pipework instead
Before masking up the tanks, pre-shading was applied to tone down the white and red scheme
The first application was the white, which was then masked off for the red. Both tanks were then given several layers of gloss varnish in preparation for the decals. The markings applied perfectly and looked as if they had been painted on, so no decal solution was needed here
The pipework were then be fitted and once firmly fixed into position, some subtle colour-washes applied. The tanks were now ready to be fitted to the airframe

cheated unless you tell them. This rear assembly was now ready to fix to the back of the fuselage; easier said than done. This was a really bad fit and no matter what I tried, plastic card had to be used to fill the gaps on one side. This is a shame as this is a focal point of the X-15 and it needs to be right.
EXTERNAL TANKS
Initially these were met with some trepidation, mainly because of the pipework that would need to be added to both tanks. Special Hobby supply some rolled up wire that can be cut and bent into shape. The other decision that needed to be made was whether to add the pipe work before or after painting. Firstly, the two main parts of the tanks were made up. No locating pins or tabs are present so I decided to start at the front with the cement and once set, work backwards along the tank. Because the layout of the piping is different on each tank, each was marked 'starboard' and 'port' to match the wording on the instructions to ensure the tanks were not mixed up when adding the detail. Thankfully the locations for the pipes' holes are marked on the tanks as small dimples.
56
The dreaded pipe runs must be made up before painting the tanks. The wire supplied with the kit needed to be unravelled and straightened. However, after a few minutes of trying, this barmy idea was dropped. Fortunately some lengths of K&S 0.51mm brass rod were to hand and I felt that this would be a better way ahead. The rod was positioned and each bend was marked off in pencil, then bent to shape in accordance with the clear layout included in the instructions. This dreaded process went swimmingly and one tank was finished in no time. Once happy with the fit of the pipe runs, the brass rods were lightly sanded ready for a coat of Humbrol Enamel silver, applied by brush. Before masking up the tanks, some pre-shading was applied to tone down the bright white and red paint scheme. The first application was the white, which was then masked off for the red. Both tanks were then given several coats of gloss varnish in readiness for the decals. The markings settled down onto the tanks perfectly and looked as if they had been painted on, so no decal solution was used on them. This just left the tanks to be sealed with a coat of Vallejo satin varnish.
The most detailed item from the kit is the dolly, consisting of seventy plus resin parts, forty-eight of which are small bolts. Clean-up requires care and patience with most of these small brittle resin parts
The dolly was given a coat of black, then when dried the yellow was applied

A coat of black-grey was sprayed all over, followed by more black but with some Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue added. Various panels were then masked off and lighter mixtures of the blue/black were applied. The model was then very lightly sanded all over using 6,000 grit sandpaper with plenty of plain tap water
The decals were applied but for some reason they folded back on themselves, creating some heart stopping moments
The panel lines were next, picked out using a grey colour made from diluted black and white watercolours

pipe runs could then be V The added and once fixed into
position, some colour-washes applied.
MAIN PAINT JOB
The challenge here was how to break up a large area of black paint, yet not make a major task of it. Firstly a coat of black grey was sprayed all over. With any imperfections dealt with, the next application was more black but with some Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue added. This is a ‘rule of thumb’ mix with the aim being to take the edge off the black, although at this stage it was hard to know if this mix had worked. Once I was happy with this, various panels were masked off and lighter mixtures of the blue/black were applied. This was a trial and error procedure as far as the colour mixes go. After the masking had been removed and the paint fully hardened, the model was very lightly sanded all over using 6000 grit sandpaper with plenty of water. Bear in mind that what looks okay when wet may scare you when dry, so easy does it! It’s better to go over it again once dry than to go too far. This process does two things; gives you a nice sheen for the decals and creates a worn, patchy look in certain areas. The decals were then applied, but for some reason they acted differently to the tank decals, folding back on themselves which did give some heart stopping moments especially on the larger markings. They also needed a lot of Micro Sol to make them settle down properly. Some even had to be left to soak overnight. It’s always the tasks that you think are going to be easy, like the decalling, that end up giving you trouble. On account of the issues with the decals, I decided to seal them locally with a coat of Micro Gloss varnish. The last stage was to apply a dusting of pastels over the model using a stiff brush and using masking tape to create hard edges. This is a very simple
58
method that really adds to the worn finish. No final coat of varnish was applied just in case this effect was lost. It was then just a matter of fitting the cockpit detail, seat plus all the ancillaries around the X-15's exterior that would have broken off if added earlier.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I am very grateful for subjects like this and in this scale. Personally I’d be surprised if anybody else would reproduce this aircraft in 1:32. It was never going to be a straightforward build, but I wouldn’t expect anything less. Models like these are about testing your skills, problem solving, adding detail and trying some different techniques; some work, some don’t. That’s model making, isn't it? Other than the highs and lows of the vaguely illustrated instructions, the finished model in the flesh looks great to me; and let’s hope my photographs do it some justice! ●

F-22 RAPTOR IN ACTION (10223)
LOU DRENDEL, SQUADRON SIGNAL PUBLICATIONS Available from good books sellers. For further information; www.adhbooks.com ISBN; 978-0-89747-827-4 This new production from Squadron Signal is in the publisher’s ‘In Action’ series and as such includes a satisfying variety of images showing the F-22 in flight – where it definitely looks at its most graceful – to on the ground, where it kinda doesn’t. This is an aircraft that, depending on the lens and camera angle used, can look like a grey camouflaged arrow or a double-chinned duck and that’s one of the factors that make it an interesting subject to model. In this eighty-four page softback production we get to see tantalising glimpses of details up-close; the undercarriage, parts of the cockpit, chaff and flare dispensers, weapons bays and airframe details and more. It’s not comprehensive coverage but the shots are useful for modellers. The aerial views are wonderful and we can see the varied patterns and tones of the Raptor’s skin in the bright sunshine; this is where the modeller can really get creative because F-22s get dirty! The high-altitude overhead view on page 69 (above right) demonstrates this amply. Overall, this is a handy reference on the F-22 Raptor and whilst not exhaustive, it will help modellers with colours and weathering patterns during their modelling project.
U-BOOT IM FOCUS, NO.14
AXEL URBANKE, LUFTFAHRTVERLAG START www.luftfahrtverlag-start.de ISBN; 978-3-941-4373-33 German publisher Luftfahrtverlag-Start’s series on the U-boats of WW2 has reached a staggering fourteen editions and thankfully, shows no sign of stopping. The books feature previously unpublished wartime photographs of the boats and the crews, presumably from the personal albums of old submariners who might have left them in their wills. The images are often fascinating, showing details of the submarines up close and revealing paint finishes (usually tatty), deck guns, rigging, markings and other technical aspects, but it’s the images of the men that are the most engaging. Their varied uniforms can be observed – including one scene where the crew are all wearing straw hats and bowlers (!) – as well as some fantastic portraits of bearded and weather-beaten sailors who have been on patrol for weeks. A three-page gatefold pullout provides a superb colour illustration (by Juanita Franzi) of U-481 and its splinter camouflage, the artwork based on three photos of the boat moored in Helsinki harbour in the summer of 1944. The conning tower emblem depicts Stalin being walloped on the head by a large hammer and makes a colourful addition to the greys of the paint scheme. If you’re into WW2 U-Boats, this series is unmissable.

h, how excited was I to learn that Bandai had produced an all-new, 1:144 kit of the AT-AT, that we first saw in The Empire Strikes back! I was almost excited as I was back in 1980 when I saw the 'real things' walking out of the freezing Hoth mist at the Leicester Square Odeon, London. That image etched itself into my fourteen year-old mind as I'm sure it did in the imaginations of millions other kids around the world. As Bandai's Star Wars model kit license does not extend to the UK, I have become accustomed to buying each new release from various internet sources, sometimes landing myself with a UK customs charge in the process.. This time though, it was not a concern, as I managed to acquire the model from Squadron's magnificent warehouse during my trip to Texas back in June for their Eagle Quest event (a full report next issue). I couldn't resist popping open the plastic bags and of course, I took some photos to share with you here! The detail is exquisite and as always, I could easily identify the kits from which the ILM model-makers pilfered to create the AT-ATs, one of which is clearly Tamiya's Sd.Kfz.222 that features in this issue! I still have my fingers crossed for a Sandcrawler though, that really is my favourite!

ULTIMATE MODELLING PRODUCTS MODELLERS SANDERS www.umpretail.com Thanks to my failing memory I can’t remember if I have shown these products here before, but I probably have! Not to worry, they are well worth some more exposure - they are invaluable tools for all modellers. UPM’s sanding sticks are high quality and are backed with a flexible plastic core that makes them durable and easy to handle. The items here are come in 400/800 grades and can be used dry or wet and on plastics and resin. See you again next time They stay ‘sharp’ for a decent amount of time and can be washed with tap water. Highly recommended, again!
