SHOW REPORT
NUREMBERG TOY FAIR 2015
BACK TO BAVARIA! TMMI returns once again to Nuremberg for the huge, annual toy fair
A
t this year's 'Spielwarenmesse', Tamiya announced an all-new kit of the French 'Somua S35' tank in 1:35, and much desired kit, previewed last issue. The other main eye-catcher for us was the 1:24 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL which is another all-new kit, not a re-boxing of Italeri's older model. Tamiya also showed the new 1:48 Pz38(t), 1:48 PzIV ausf.H late-production and 1:35 WW1 British Infantry figure set. So, enjoy this extended photo-report over the next few pages and our apologies for any omissions – we ran out of space to fit it all in!

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:24 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SL ● KIT NO.24338
MERCEDES ‘SPORT-LEICHT’ TMMI takes a look into the box of Tamiya's newest car kit, the gorgeous mid '50s Mercedes-Benz 300SL

T
amiya held on to their secret release for this year's Nuremberg Toy Fair with impressive tenacity; news of the latest car to join the 1:24 Sports Car Series only just reached the public domain before the show opened in late January/early February. This allowed even more impact to be created, as it's not every day that a new-tool kit of a motoring icon is created! The Mercedes-Benz 300SL started life as a prototype for the famous German marque's works racing team and the car took part in many international races. In 1954, a production version was unveiled at the New York International Motor
Show and despite being designated a road car, the 300SL was still very much a race-bred vehicle and proved popular, particularly in the USA. It was equipped with a three-litre petrol engine (hence the '300' in its name) and a lightweight body (the 'SL' stands for 'Sport Leicht'; 'light sports') with striking gull wing doors. 1,400 cars were produced by the end of the production run, in May 1957. Tamiya's new kit captures the lines of the real SL perfectly, right down to the operable gull-wing doors and complex tubular space frame chassis. Other working parts include an openable bonnet and boot and steerable front
wheels. The kit comes with photo-etched, self-adhesive badges, mesh for the grille areas, a whole sprue of plated parts for the hub caps, grille, bumpers, wipers, dashboard, rear-view mirrors, headlight surrounds, side-strips and more. As mentioned, the spaceframe chassis is replicated in full, in multi-part form and the suspension system with all-round drum-brakes is well detailed. The tyres are provided in synthetic rubber and sport finely rendered tread detail, although sadly the sidewalls are devoid of manufacturer's markings. The rear side-windows have their frames moulded integrally, so a small sheet of
The Mercedes’ bodyshell is a beautiful moulding with snip-off stiffeners to protect it during transit and handling. The gullwing doors are fully operable.
The model’s Interior and engine parts, all sport satisfying levels of detail.
The cabin features sumptuous detail from the chromed dashboard to the deep ‘leather’ (moulded) seats.

masks is provided, although they are not pre-cut. Tamiya have done a remarkable job with this kit, detailing it inside and out, with some appealing features. Care will need to be taken, especially when working on the gullwing doors whose hinges look a little fragile. An immaculate paint finish will be required and we'd recommend a layer of Tamiya's Fine Surface Primer, followed by a TS spray in your choice of colour. We can't wait to get this beauty on the workbench and the full-build article will be in TMMI. ●

TMMI’S OPINION? A genuine automotive icon and a very welcome addition to the 1:24 Sports Car Series. The kit has enough working features to give it some ‘zing’ but remains a serious, detailed and accurate replica of one of Mercedes-Benz’ most beautiful creations.

AIRCRAFT MODELLING KINETIC FOUGA MAGISTER 1:48 â—? KIT NO.48051
MAJESTIC MAGISTER Jean-Luc Formery momentarily abandons his love for propeller aircraft to build Kinetic's 1:48 Fouga Magister
L
ong shunned by model kit manufacturers, the Fouga Magister CM170 is currently found in the forefront of the modelling scene with the simultaneous release of several entirely new kits. In 1:48, the first is from Kinetic with a box that allows you to build two whole models, like the now famous 'Dual Combo' by Eduard. Soon, in the same scale, should follow the AMK kit (AvantGarde) The Czech manufacturer
MPM will, for its part, also release a Magister CM170 and CM175 Zephyr navalised version, this time in 1:72. All lovers of this elegant French trainer will soon be spoilt for choice, something which is becoming increasingly common in modelling today, not that I'm complaining.
BUILDING AGAINST INSTINCT
I must admit I'm not a big fan of jets. My rule is that anything that doesn't
have at least one propeller won't find its way on my modelling bench! But the Editor knows how to be persuasive and since the Magister is a somewhat unusual airplane, I allowed myself to be persuaded to build the new Kinetic model. It 'presents' well in the box, but do not be fooled by appearances, because the kit contains several challenges that we will discuss in this article. It must be said that it's not really the plastic parts that cause problems, but rather

the instruction booklet. This is unworthy of a modern production and you have to constantly check the correct numbering of parts and worse. Not being in any way an expert on the Fouga Magister, it took some internet research to compensate for gaps in the instructions. Even having done my best, I'm still not sure if I made some mistakes. I hope the 'experten' of this aircraft will be forgiving. Assembly begins with the cockpit, which consists of detail moulded into the inner faces of the fuselage sides and a 'bathtub'. Do not be surprised if the rear position is less well equipped, this is also the case in the real aircraft. The seats are too simplified, but hopefully a resin aftermarket
manufacturer will consider creating replacements. Meanwhile, we must make our own seat harnesses using parts from the spares-box. Mine came from an aircraft of the Second World War which I 'modernized' and painted medium blue. The entire cockpit was painted black except for the brown seats (Bakelite and leather) and aluminium oxygen cylinders. The instrument panels are moulded raised but there are no decals for the dial faces and we must therefore paint them individually or source decals from the spares box. The periscope for the rear pilot, typical of the Magister, is provided in the kit. It'll be found on the transparent sprue but not part D9
The blue straps add a touch of colour to an otherwise monotone interior; the harnesses remain visible through the canopy on the finished model.
as stated, but D11. You are guided to cement it to the rear instrument panel (C59) but do not do it! The part should actually be fixed inside the canopy (part D1 or D2 depending on whether you want to represent the closed or open canopy). I warned you that there would be some pitfalls, and it's not over yet...
TRICKY SUB-ASSEMBLIES
Instruction sequence No.2 is entirely dedicated to the nose of the plane which includes the front of the complex structure, beautifully reproduced by Kinetic. But again the instructions are not very clear. Firstly, parts C60 and C66 are poorly numbered; they must be inverted. Then, there is no indication

part D9 and C66. However, I decoded the puzzle and using part C72 as support, one manages to get away without too much trouble, eventually. The undercarriage legs were painted aluminium while the interior of the compartment was painted in buff. The installation of the cockpit within the fuselage was trouble-free and it came together quite easily. At this stage it's necessary to fit the radio equipment to the quarterdeck, but it is too small and impossible to cement as shown in the
instructions without adding plastic card to form a support. It was only much later that I realised that this piece should actually be installed directly on the transparent part of the canopy!
FINISH; ALUMINIUM
The painting of an aircraft in overall aluminium may sound easy, but I must admit that for me, every time, it's a source of difficulty. In general, it's a very unforgiving process but Revell's Aqua Color acrylic paints are actually quite flexible to use, provided you use
Mini Review... AK INTERACTIVE AIRCRAFT COLOURS ITEM no.AK2060 www.creativemodels.co.uk
Revell's own thinner. After masking off the areas to be protected (cockpit and undercarriage bays) I spayed a layer of Revell aluminium paint (No.99 Aluminium), then applied 'Future' gloss varnish to create a smooth surface for decals application. Following this, Tamiya's dark brown 'Panel Line Accent Color' was used to deepen the surface detail, then a layer of matt varnish Gunze H20 unified the finish. Not fully satisfied, Rub 'N Buff metallic paste was applied with a cotton swab to give a little more sparkle to the model.
This new addition to AK Interactive’s ‘Air Series’ range combines eight shades of acrylic paint for the finishing of WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft, each in a 17ml plastic bottle with a ‘squirty’ nozzle. Each paint needs a thorough shake prior to use and can be sprayed without further dilution, but the modeller can thin further if they want.

TEN GRAMS THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING The installation of the landing gear posed no particular problem, except for the leg-retract cylinders (C55). A simple solution to fit them is to remove their location pins. This done, everything was in order; we can finally place the model on its wheels ...and find that it falls on the small safety wheel at the back. So must find a place to house ten grams of lead; fortunately there is space under the bathtub of the cockpit. The large canopy moulding must be adjusted and the upper edges of the fuselage sanded a good half a millimetre on each side to form a flush joint between each other.
THE GOOD AND THE LESS SO...
The Kinetic model is basically a very decent model and just requires a bit of adjustment work here and there, plus a little filler to help create a beautiful reproduction of this stylish, French jet-trainer. The weak point is undoubtedly its instructions. I hope that the brand rectifies this for the next release, since it caused me several frustrating moments. However, a great looking model is the end result! ●
The orange panels are typical of the Magister and are very distinctive parts of the paint scheme.
A great looking “model is the end result..! ” The orange markings on the butterfly tail, so typical of the Fouga Magister, are provided in decal form.
Dark washes were employed to highlight the panel lines and other surface details.

n this well known and remarkably well composed wartime photograph, we see a 105mm HMC M7 ‘Priest’ of the US 14th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Armored Division, crossing the main Paris-Cherbourg railway line at Carentan shortly after D-Day. The vehicle is passing over the level crossing into the town centre and about to drive past the ‘Desire Ingouf’ cafe (right) which featured in ‘Band of Brothers’ TV mini-series. This
photograph could have been a direct inspiration for one of Franҫois Verlinden’s wonderful dioramas from the 1980s and ‘90s, with Jeeps, GIs and a shattered building in the background. ● In model form Dragon offer an excellent new kit of the M7 Priest in 1:35. KIT PREVIEW REVELL 1:32 FOCKE-WULF FW190F-8 SCHLACHTER ● KIT NO.04869
WIZARD WURGER! TMMI inspects a test-shot of Revell’s all-new 1:32 Fw190F-8. Text and sprue photos by Brett Green
T
he ‘F’ series of the Focke-Wulf Fw190 was the specialised ground-attack version of the versatile ‘Wurger’ family. The F-8 was based on the A-8 airframe, but had armour augmentation built into the structure, plus a provision for a wide range of additional ordnance under the wings and fuselage centre-line. The extra armour was not externally visible, so the best visual cue to distinguish an F-8 from an A-8 is the absence of wing guns. Note, however, that the bulge above the wing gun position was sometimes still installed on the F-8.
REVELL’S NEW 1:32 KIT
After more than a decade since the last 1:32 Wurger release, Revell has created an new-tool Fw190F-8 and recently we were very lucky to receive a full set of test shot sprues, plus decals. It must be stressed that what you see here are mouldings at the pre-production stage, so the parts may be subject to change in the ‘off the shelf’ kit. The kit comprises over 200 parts in mid-grey
polystyrene and twelve parts in transparent plastic. The airframe parts display fine, engraved panel-lines with some restrained, recessed rivet detail. The texture on control surfaces consists of very fine raised lines and the cooling vents on the fuselage sides are moulded open, a very attractive feature. Cockpit detail is more than adequate for this scale, with raised bezels and blank dials on the instrument panel; the dial faces will be found on the decal sheet, as will the seat harnesses and side consoles. Markings are supplied for two aircraft; ‘Black 2’ and ‘Black 6’, both from St.SG.10 based in Czechoslovakia, 1945. Although labelled as an F-8, the kit can also be built as a G-8 long-distance ground attack aircraft pretty much straight from the box. A decent selection of underwing stores are included; one SC500 bomb, two SC250 bombs, four SC100 bombs and three 300 litre drop-tanks. The real highlight of this kit is the full BMW radial engine that comes as standard, featuring exhaust-
manifolds, push rods and cooling fan. Despite this high level of detail, the engine is broken down into a modest sixteen parts, so it won’t become an overwhelming sub-assembly. The kit also comes with a rather nice circular display base which brings the finished model up to eye level for close examination; an attractive feature.
Fuselage half mouldings carry fine surface detail.
Engine cowlings are removable so the engine can be seen.
Control surfaces are individually moulded and are posable.
Righthand wing, upper surface. Note the bulges at the root.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Revell has come up with yet another large-scale classic with their 1:32 Fw 190F-8. At around £36, the kit represents extraordinary value for money. The ‘proof of the pudding is in the eating’ as they say, but from our in-box review, this kit looks like a real winner. ● MODEL SPEC SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:32 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . This new kit of the Fw190F-8 will surely be a winner for Revell; it’s a universally popular subject, it has great detail inside and out and comes with an extremely attractive price ticket. What’s not to love?
Bombs are supplied; the rudder (in two halves) is posable.
The cockpit tub carries decent levels of detail on all surfaces.
A complete BMW radial engine is included, but is easy to build.
A choice of two canopies is offered.

FULL-BUILD: AFV MODELLING TAMIYA 1:35 SOMUA S35 FRENCH MEDIUM TANK ● KIT NO.35344
Pt.1 PLEASE SIR, CAN I HAVE SOMUA? In this special 'photo-feature', TMMI's Editor shows how to make a few simple improvements to Tamiya's new 1:35 Somua S35 French medium tank, including how to open up the engine deck grilles and assemble the tracks...
“The 1:35 Military Miniature series welcomes a new subject, with the SOMUA S35. This French medium tank remains a highly-regarded design that, while not given a chance to show its full effectiveness during the Battle of France in 1940, showed up strongly in a number of battles with German forces and indeed was used by German forces after the French defeat, and even by the Allies after the liberation of France in 1944. It was among the first French tanks developed for use as a cavalry tank, as opposed to the previous infantry roles the tank was largely restricted to under French military doctrine. A cast metal body with armour up to 56mm thick gave excellent protection from German guns, and offensively it could rely on a powerful 47mm gun that repeatedly tore through German tanks. All in all, some 430 SOMUA S35s were produced.” Tamiya HQ

Various items of equipment are fitted to the rear panel, so holes need opening up, using drills and fine broaches.
Here we can see the opened-up holes from within the hull; they vary in diameter.
And here are those holes from the exterior. It’s essential to do this before cementing the hull halves together!
One of the two identifiable 'issues' with the kit is this small vision port; its detail definition has been obscured in the texturing process.
It’s a very simple job to drill three shallow holes and fabricate a small ‘biscuit’ shaped port cover from plastic strip, rounded at its ends. You might need several goes at this until you create one of the right length and shape. The cover was cemented in place, Grandt Line bolts place in the three holes and three more, small holes made along the top edge and ends of the vision port cover. Tiny brass discs were CA glued into the new holes, but this isn’t really necessary.
For a little extra variety and individuality, the one-piece cast bow plate was simulated (with its horizontal lip), instead of the two-part item as provided in the kit. First, a strip of Tamiya masking tape was place horizontally at the level of the lip.
The materials for the job; Mig Productions' fretless photo-etched brass discs, plus styrene strip and Grandt Line moulded polystyrene bolt-heads.
Following this, Holts Cataloy putty –thinned with liquid cement – was painted in the area above the tape strip, creating a build up that could be seen once the tape was removed.
Once the putty had hardened (over night) and the tape peeled off, we can see the ridge formed by the procedure. This can be adjusted with sandpaper to reduce the height, if needed.

Tamiya, very thoughtfully, have moulded the engine grilles as individual parts so their vertical-facing bars can be properly formed. The gaps between them are moulded solid though, for strength. The author chose to open them up so that there would be a realistic open area below, to impart a feeling of depth.
To start with, the height of the grille parts' reverse faces needed to be reduce, beginning with the raised ribs.
A Trumpeter straight-edged chisel was used for this, which is the perfect tool for the job. It was simply dug into each rib and pushed forward, curling off the plastic neatly, without danger of it puncturing the part.
Following this, a Swann-Morton No.10 blade in a No.3 handle was used to scrape off any remnants of the ribs.
The same blade size was then used to further reduce the thickness until the backs of the grille bars started to show.
The backs of the grille mouldings were scraped until just a thin, and now translucent film of plastic remained.
Then, another Swann-Morton blade – this time a No.10A – was used to pierce the film of plastic, opening up the grilles.
But we’re not done yet, as you can see here! Plenty of plastic ‘swarf’ remains, which will need methodical removal by sanding and scouring with a stiff brush.
The grilles become thin and quite delicate once this process has been completed, so a sturdy piece of polystyrene strip was cemented onto their reverse faces.
It’s a fairly quick job to accomplish and the results are worth it, in the author’s opinion.

p 28-36 Somua Pt1 234MN.indd 30
03/03/2015 17:56
The recesses where the grilles fit into in the upper hull are also solid, and these will need opening up too. The tried and tested method of drilling holes along the cut-line was employed.
Once the line of holes had been drilled, the remaining plastic can be easily snipped through with side cutters.
The waste plastic can then be cut and sanded until you’re left with a clean aperture.
To conceal the fact that no engine is present in the now exposed engine bay, everything was hand-painted matt black using Vallejo acrylic paint.
Painting the void matt black might seem to negate the effort of opening up the grilles, but the sense of depth achieved by doing it this way is far better than trying to paint between the grille bars. Here we see how the newly opened grilles look from below; the undersides were painted black too, so no bare plastic could be seen.
From above, we see how much better the grilles look with a little air between their elements. Some black paint spillage has been cleaned up with thinners, hence the dirty appearance.

The other area you might wish to improve are the stowage bins, which are suspended from rails along the hull's right flank.
In reality, the bins' lids are secured with leather straps with buckles, but on the kit parts these elements look a little too 'tidy' and could do with replacing, plus there's a gap in the straps where the lids meet the bins. All detail was thus sanded off.
It’s easier to remove all detail from the bins, and replace it afterwards with plastic strip. Here we see the brackets which were rebuilt with narrow styrene, an easy enough task.
The strips, with their ends sanded into a rounded profiles, were then fixed with liquid cement. Once dry, the excess strip was trimmed and sanded.
The positions of the brackets where marked with a knick of the scalpel, made permanent with a dab of black marker pen.
A slight gap will be found where the upper hull meets the lower, but this disappears once the halves are cemented together. The instructions offer polycaps to achieve this union, suggesting a motorised version of the kit in the future. The lower hull sides are moulded as individual panels to which the suspension parts, drive sprockets and idlers attach. Bogies under construction; these are finely detailed, although most of this is hidden once the side panels have been fitted.

The leaf springs have mould seams running over them, but there’s really no need to remove them as they are invisible on the completed model.
The idler wheels are moulded in two parts and a little Mr Surfacer 500 was applied to conceal the join lines between the spokes.
An inner/lower suspension panel is fitted over the bogies; we can see some fine bolt and rivet detail on their outer faces.
The lower suspension panels are in place, trapping the idlers in position and strengthening the running gear.

The Somua's hull is really taking shape now.
The side armour fits over the lower suspension panels, completely covering the suspension detail – now you can see why there's little point in filing those leaf springs!
The horizontal rails seen in this image are the hangers for the stowage bins. Their attachment points have been treated with a dab of Mr Surfacer 500 to fill any fine gaps and to make the joints look more natural.
There’s an ejection-pin mark on the left front fender but it will be concealed by the horn and its armoured cover.

Tamiya's individual-link track technology has really reached a very refined stage; the Somua's tracks simply snap together but remain articulated. A link is offered up to the assembled section, which is laying the 'right way' up. The link is sitting on the snap-pins of the preceding link. With a fingertip, the new link is simply pushed down onto its neighbour, on a solid, flat surface. The link makes a quiet 'click' when it’s in the correct position, which you'll feel in your fingertip more than hear. Here we can see the perfect result; no need for messy cementing operations with these links. Each link is moulded through its tread surface, hence the tiny moulding mark in the middle of each part. The easiest way to deal with the moulding marks is to first assemble the tracks, then use one of UMP's excellent sanding sticks (www.umpretail.com) to remove them (see pic G), working lengthways to avoid twisting and uncoupling the links. F
or those of us that love wheeled armoured vehicles, Dragon’s new Saladin Mk.2 was a welcome surprise. Lets face it, if it isn’t WWII or Modern AFVs, it’s a rarity for one of the major kit manufacturers to offer something that different. Under their Black Label series, Dragon has brought us the only 1:35 injection plastic model since Tamiya’s vintage kit, of this Cold War armoured car. The model comes in their standard light grey plastic. Other than the upper and lower hulls and the upper turret, the kit has six sprues of cleanly moulded parts with crisp detail. You also get a small clear sprue with light lenses, tyres made of Dragon’s DS yellow vinyl and a small photo-etched screen that mounts on the rear deck. The hull and turret parts clearly benefit from slide-mould technology with beautifully rendered weld lines and other details; it’s clear that this kit will
build up nicely. The rest of the plastic parts have crisp detail and from my limited test fitting and it all went together with a great fit. One thing to note is that the attachment points are on the large side and some of them are in less than optimum locations. Cutting them off and cleaning the parts up will be a bit tedious. There are some seam-lines that will need to be cleaned up but nothing horrific. The only part of the kit that has ‘soft’ detail are the sidewalls of the tyres but if they are carefully painted, I think they will look just fine in the end. The instructions are typical Dragon; clean computer line drawings broken down into twenty easy steps. The decals are clean and crisp with six markings options. Although there is a good amount of detail provided, there are a few things that are missing. If you look at the nice box art and almost all of the images of the
Saladin on the web, they all appear to have a .30cal machine gun mounted on the turret, travel lock, tow cables and other details that are nowhere to be found in the kit. When it’s all said and done, this is a nice kit of a wonderful subject. I’ll grant that it is a bit on the expensive side for what you get in the box, and there are some key things that should be in the kit, especially for that price, but if you love wheeled armour like I do, it’s nothing insurmountable. Keep watching for my build soon, as I just had to start the kit as soon as I photographed the parts for this review! ● MODEL SPEC SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . .IM, DS, PE, WS AVAILABILITY; Good model shops everywhere www.hobbyco.net TMMI’S OPINION? MODEL MOTORSPORT BELKITS 1:24 SKODA FABIA S2000 â—? KIT NO.0004
Ĺ KODA;
SIMPLY FABIALOUS!
Eric Evain builds Belkits 1:24 Skoda Fabia S2000. So what does he think of it?
S
ince its integration into the VAG group, the venerable Czech brand 'Skoda' demonstrated great dynamism in the automotive market and made a grand entrance into the world of competition, especially in rallying. The Skoda Fabia S2000 made its debut in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge Championship (IRC) at the Monte Carlo Rally in 2009. This small bomb with is two-litre, naturally aspirated 265bhp engine quickly demonstrated its competitiveness and won three IRC Championships with Juho Hanninen (2010) and Andreas Mikkelsen (2011 and 2012). In 2013, the Czech Jan Kopecky won the European Rally Championship (ERC), which
succeeded the IRC. The Fabia S2000 should run its last ERC season in 2014 before a Skoda R5 makes its entrance in 2015.
THE RALLY SPECIALISTS
Belkits of Belgium has a very lively passion for rally. After the Peugeot 207 S2000 and S2000 Ford Fiesta WRC and it offers another new 1:24 rally car kit. I was keen to get going on the review model and as usual, I start by painting the body; preparation began with a light sanding, to remove the moulding lines. The body was primed with Tamiya White Primer (aerosol) and once cured, the bright white was painted with Tamiya TS-26. The base of the front bumper and the contour of the air intake was painted
with TS-14 Black (gloss) before receiving the decals. All metallic green surfaces are provided on the decal sheet so no masking was necessary. The large green and black side decals (No.18
and 19) were cut in half at the base of the 'V' in order to ease their application. The use of Micro-Sol decal solution is indispensable for the application of waterslide markings.
The body was painted bright white TS-26 and the door seals highlighted in gloss black. It is best to do this before applying the decals to avoid damaging them.

CHASSIS
First, a few words about the instructions. They are not very clear, which creates a slight feeling of 'unfinished business'. Given its quality, the kit deserves better than that! If something needs to be improved by Belkits in its upcoming productions, it's the instruction sheet. The chassis is generally well detailed, although in the end it will be almost entirely hidden by the lower skid plates. The engine, gearbox and rear differential were painted with a mixture of X-10 Gun Metal and XF-16 Aluminium. The exhaust was painted with Model Master Burnt Metal. The instructions suggests fitting the exhaust after the engine is in place, I advise you to cement them before the engine goes in, which is more convenient to do.
CABIN INTERIOR
The interior is well reproduced with many electronic boxes etc., just needing some cables to 'wire up'. If you want to see details of the cabin, I suggest you check out this excellent site; www. speedhunters.com/2012/04/ car-featuresuper-skoda/ This has great views of the Skoda Fabia. For decals No.12 – the Sparco markings on the sides of the seats at shoulder level – the instructions are unclear. There should actually be one on each side of the seat, not just on the left. Belkits provide fabric harness straps and buckles in photo-etched metal and their rendering is very realistic, but sticking them in place with cyanoacrylate is not easy because the fabric immediately absorbs the glue and becomes rigid. The solution is to glue in two steps: first, the fabric was saturated with a small amount of glue to create a hard point. Then, this hard point will be used for the second application of glue. The most difficult part is to apply the decals to the fabric straps. To fit the roll cage it's necessary to re-drill the holes in the floor so that the tubes will fit properly. Do not forget to install the dashboard before fixing the upper cage in place. At the rear, part D4 serves to
U
To aid polishing the body, the author used a variable speed mini-drill with polishing mop.
The cabin has been fitted onto the chassis and the side walls mounted to the sides of the cabin. Note the two spare wheels in the rear compartment.
The entire livery of the car is supplied in decal form and they conform very well to the body. Decal softener is highly recommended for the rear wings.
The underbelly of the Fabia is well detailed, so it’s a shame that most will be hidden by the protective plate.
Window masks are provided which are curiously open at the ventilation points; they were masked off too.

and therefore it must be cemented first, which is not obvious at first. The construction of the interior ends with the fitting of the side walls.
FINAL ASSEMBLY
Some parts were painted with Alclad II Chrome; the tail lights, the front grille and additional optics for night driving. Transparent parts were fitted with white glue which should leave no trace once dry. Belkits provide ventilation grilles in photo-etched metal and these were painted in satin black and fitted from inside the body. I had to shorten the grille before fixing so that it would sit correctly. On the rear window, Belkits did something new by moulding the de-misting circuit directly on the transparent part, which I had never seen before. Masks are provided for the windows' edges, but be careful, they lift off pretty easily, so press them on well just before you start painting. Nice details adorn this model, such as ventilation flaps on the side windows, separate door handles and body fixings in photo-etched metal. The row of additional lights for night events can be permanently fixed by drilling the body or fitted temporarily with small pieces of double-sided adhesive to make them removable. And another Belkits car is complete! Aside from a few criticisms, it is an excellent model with plenty of appealing touches. ●
There is a difference in size between the seats of Hanninen and his co-pilot Markkula. The cloth harness straps are provided in the kit. Belkits provide carbon-fibre effect decals for the seat backs. Note the photo-etched bases of the seats and ‘big foot’ footprints for the co-pilot!
Separately moulded door handles enhance the realism of the model.
Rollbars fit together despite their complex entanglements.

The M29 is a subject that makes a fantastic 1:48 kit, but it’s not until you actually see one that you realise how small it is! CMK’s cast resin release is a wonderful little gem, comprising just eighteen cast resin parts plus three photo-etched brass items and a sheet of decals. Detail is fantastic and the one-piece track/ wheel assemblies are a marvel of 3D mastering.

MODEL MOTORSPORT TAMIYA 1:12 HONDA CR250R â—? KIT NO.14011
RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL Guy Golsteyn takes on Tamiya's re-released classic, the 1:12 Honda CR250R Motocross bike. In this article, he focuses on a key way of enhancing the model's appearance, by replacing the wheel spokes one-by-one with metal parts!
I
n 1972, Honda released their first Motocross production bike and until the end of the seventies all were four-stroke machines. The release of a two-stroker (and water-cooled at that) became quite a topic among the manufacturers. Water-cooled two-stroke engines were light, compact and very well suited for
Motocross machines, as the even heating maintained engine stability and eliminated power loss due to overheating. Honda won their first Motocross competition in 1979 in the 500cc class and in 1980 took the 250cc class at the Japan National Championships. The release of the CR250R production water-cooled bike made it the first in the world
in its class to be put on the market. This bike also carried the Honda-developed 'Pro-Link' rear suspension system which was soft over small bumps and resilient over large bumps, providing a high degree of control and manoeuvrability over the rough terrain of Motocross competition. The Honda CR250R type 1981 was equipped with a water-cooled
246cc 41hp two-stroke, single-cylinder engine which is almost an exact copy of their competition engine utilised in the RC250M machine. Since its debut in November 1980 with the CR125R and CR80R, this 250cc machine has gathered a large following both on and off the Motocross circuits around the world.

CONVERSION OF THE WHEEL RIMS
Because of its notable history and because Tamiya decided to re-release this fabulous kit, I chose to build this Honda Motocross Racer. And as always, when I try to build a model as close to reality as I possibly can, I initially started looking for good reference photos, which I found on a website where a private owner proudly exhibits his nicely restored machine. The reference pictures showed me all the details I needed to enhance the kit. Firstly, I wanted to tackle the wheels. The kit provides moulded polystyrene wheels and spokes which, unfortunately, are somewhat over-scale; they are 1mm thick which would, given the scale of the kit, correspond to an actual thickness of 12mm! Now I understand that dirt bikes are equipped with stronger and firmer spokes than a normal bike, but 12mm spokes seems to be greatly exaggerated, even for a Motocrosser. So I decided to replace the plastic spokes with metal copies with a more realistic diameter; 0.6mm seemed a lot more plausible to me. In reality, this would match spokes of 7mm diameter which is a lot closer to the real dimensions. Once I had decided to replace the spokes, I started to think about how I was going to deal with this problem and after some puzzling I came up with the nine-step conversion which I will explain in this article. Of course it is not the only possible method but it worked and it turned out to be not too complicated. Most if not all spoke rims consist of two halves which have to be fixed to each other to form the actual spoke rim. That is actually a good thing, because it makes the conversion a lot easier. I will explain the whole conversion step by step, so that it is easy to understand for everyone. You will notice that it is not difficult at all, although it is time-consuming and you will need a lot of patience to finish the job. So let’s say it is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration!
U
Above and below, most of the body parts (if you can call them that when talking about a dirt bike) should be painted Tamiya TS-08 Gloss Red. This includes the central shock-absorber spring, a stabilization rod and even the engine block, although this should be sprayed semi-gloss red instead of gloss red.
Above right, the welding seams were only partly formed and the existing ones were too straight and regular, unlike from the real thing. So, weld new seams were added to the exhaust system, plus other detail additions; worth doing as so much remains on show when the model is complete.
With the engine in place, it was time to start adding the remaining auxiliary parts. With the reference photos as a guide, the author was able to enhance the realism of the engine by adding a few extra details.
Here we see the right side of the carburettor and the watercooling hose on the top of the cylinder head.

MODEL MOTORSPORT TAMIYA 1:12 HONDA CR250R ● KIT NO.14011
Each wheel is split into two halves which, once mated, form the full spoked disc.
The spokes’ positions and directions were marked with a spirit-based marker which will work on the chrome-plated surface.
Here we see the finished rear wheel with kit spokes (above left) and with the much more scale-like metal replacements (above right). The difference is clear to see.
THE WHEEL SPOKES V REPLACING STEP 1
First we put one of the spoke wheel halves in front of us and we indicate the direction of the spokes with a spirit-based felt-tipped pen on the inside of the rim. This is necessary because we will soon start cutting away the spokes and we will no longer be able to see how they ran and where they came from.
STEP 2
Next, we will be replacing just a few spokes without touching the majority of them. The goal of this step is that we remove enough plastic spokes at regular intervals and systematically replace them with metal copies so that the wheel centre remains fixed to the rim, even when we remove the remaining plastic spokes and start
replacing them with metal spokes. So we have to pick out some carefully chosen spokes to be replaced. In this case the wheel counts eighteen spokes, so I chose to start by replacing six of them first. Note that the wheel spokes are running alternatively to the front of the centre and to the rear of the centre. Once they arrive at the centre they make a 90° turn and they disappear into a hole which is located in the central part. So it seems like a good idea to replace the spokes each time as a pair of two. We take a sharp modelling knife and carefully scrape off the spoke part which is connected to the centre Next we drill a hole of 0.6mm (for spokes of 0.6mm) exactly at the spot where the spoke runs into the centre Do the same on the other side with the 'twin spoke'.
Here we can see the first disc to be worked on; the highlighted spokes (right) are the first ones to be removed.
Spok repla centr
Same goes for the front wheel; the finer spokes make a big difference to the look of the finished model.
Altho once spok
STEP 3
Now we can carefully cut off the first plastic spoke. Because we marked the two spots from where to where it ran we can safely replace it with a metal copy and it will sit in exactly the same place. But first we will have to engrave a small 0.6mm slot on the black line we drew earlier, deep enough to fit the new metal spoke into.
STEP 4
We take the 0.6mm metal wire that we will be using to make the spoke copies with. With a pair of pliers, we bend a 90° corner of about 1 to 2mm length. Put the short end into recently drilled hole and place the metal wire in the slot. Now we can indicate the correct metal wire length and we cut it off with a wire cutter. Next, we put the metal wheel spoke back in place

Close-up views of the rear suspension (above left) and front (above right) show some of the refinements made; the rear main spring was paint gloss red and the central piston given a chromed finish. On the front, the chrome was removed so the seam lines could be sanded.

or four spoke pairs at regular intervals. This way the hub will be fixed to the rim with at least six or eight spokes. So we repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5 at least two or three times.
reshape the wheel centre into a perfect circular shape, because this was nearly impossible with the plastic spokes in place.
STEP 5
STEP 7
Finally, all that's left to do is to replace the remaining spokes with metal copies, following the same procedure as described above. It is however a good idea not to work as before in pairs of spokes, but to do all the spokes at one side of the wheel first, then flip the wheel and continue with the other side. Once we have completed this we have finished one half of one wheel, so because this is a motorcycle we have performed 25% of the work. I spent one night to complete this job, which means I needed four evenings for the complete conversion of the two rims. That's a lot of time, but you also
Next we follow exactly the same procedure for the twin spoke. The only difference is that we must flip the rim over to put the spoke in the centre. You will also notice that where the plastic spokes used to be moulded together at the crossing because of the thickness, the metal spokes will run freely and they won’t touch each other anymore.
STEP 6
To make sure that the wheel centre remains perfectly in place while removing the main part of the spokes, it is advised to start with at least three
Once we have replaced three pairs we check again to make sure the metal spokes are all firmly attached to the wheel hub. Next we cut off all the remaining plastic spokes.
STEP 8
Before we can fix the remaining metal spokes, we must remove all excess material and drill the remaining holes in the wheel hub. We also must remove all excess material and carve the slots from the wheel rim. We can also take advantage of the fact that the main part of spokes is absent to

wheels in return. Convince yourself by looking at the photos; on the left we can see a standard kit wheel and on the right side we see a customized wheel. Once all the spokes have been replaced, don’t forget to paint the wheel hubs in semi-gloss black before fixing the halves together permanently. I was a little too enthusiastic with the cool-looking result of the metal spokes and I forgot to paint the centres, resulting in a paint job for the wheel centres after gluing the wheel halves together, which made things a lot more difficult of course!
CONCLUSION
And finally the long awaited moment has arrived: the Honda CR250R was completed. A Motocross
machine is, by definition, a lot simpler than a circuit racer and consequently the model will be finished a lot quicker, even if you replace all the unrealistic looking parts with scratchbuilt parts. The great thing about these bikes is that you still can admire a whole lot of your work once it is finished, thanks to the fact that there is no cowling covering up the engine and most of the motorcycle. And one thing is for sure; not everyone has a 1:12 Motocrosser model in their showcase, after all, only four of these bikes have been re-released by Tamiya in 1:12 scale two Hondas, one Suzuki and one KTM... But that will be subject of another article! ●
The joy of Motocross bike models; the engine is fully on show when the model is complete!

Thanks to Ukrainian firm ICM, we now have a splendid, new-tool kit of Henry Ford’s most famous vehicle in the ‘standard’ car kit scale of 1:24. Whilst the box-top makes no mention of Ford, we do find nicely moulded logos in abundance in all the right places; running boards, radiator header and grille face. A decent engine is provided, featuring all the main parts such as the exhaust manifold, fan/fan-belt and sump; all it needs are ignition cables and throttle linkage etc. Detail is extremely finely rendered and there are some nice touches, such as flexible tyres in off-white, a pale brass coloured plated sprue and a beautiful padded effect on the seats. Special Hobby’s 1:32 kit was initially launched in 2013 in G.50bis form and now we have the G.50 II ‘Regia Aeronautica’ (Italian Royal Air Force) version which does a great job of capturing those lines in plastic. The model comes on four sprues of grey polystyrene plus a small sprue of clear parts and a bag of resin castings that constitute the engine and MG barrels. A modest fret of photo-etched brass parts carries the seat harnesses and other small parts. The cockpit is comprehensively detailed, as is the engine, which will build into a lovely replica. Markings are provided for two Regia Aeronautica machines, both in typically complex camouflage schemes that will test anyone’s airbrushing skills! MN

LOYD CARRIER NO.2 MK.II www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS • KIT NUMBER; CB35188 The Loyd Carrier (correctly spelt with one ‘L’ on the box-top) was one of the small, tracked utility vehicles used by the British Army in WW2. It used running-gear components from the Universal Carrier and the engine, gearbox and chassis from the Fordson 7V truck. Around 26,000 of these machines were made. Bronco’s kit is an engagingly complex production with a very high parts-count for such a small model, even when not taking into account the fifty-six or so link-and-length track mouldings. It comes with a full engine, which is completely hidden on the finished model, unless the cowling is fitted in the open position. Metal springs are provided for the suspension bogies and the chassis is a part-by-part subassembly. The hull interior is highly detailed and the model comes with the option to have the moulded canvas tilt with the sides rolled up or deployed in the lowered position. A generous seven markings-options are provided, making this little model a very highly detailed project! MN

TAKOM, HONG KONG
T3 TRANSPORTER BUS, TRUCK www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS • KIT NUMBER; 2013/2014 As well as being the basis for camper vans, the VW T3 Transporter was also employed in a military role by the modern German Army and other European nations. Takom, relative newcomers to the scale model scene, decided that this subject was worthy of a 1:35 kit in two variants and we agree! The result are well detailed models that both include partial engine detail, a complete interior and refined levels of detail throughout. The cabins feature individually moulded doors so they can be posed open and the front wheels are steerable which is quite a rare feature in a 1:35 ‘car’ model. The beauty with this subject is that it can be finished as a Bundeswehr machine or as a civilian truck in an appealing state of disrepair.
Brilliant choice of subject, fabulous detail, accurate-looking profile The way the kits are packed in their boxes can cause the bodyshell to become distorted, so some sprue-trimming is needed for safe storage/stash-stacking TMMI 234 April 2015

MINIART, UKRAINE
US TRACTOR D7 W/TOWING WINCH D7N www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS • KIT NUMBER; 35174 If you like lots and lots of tiny kit parts, MiniArt’s new 1:35 D7 dozer will fit the bill perfectly! This kit is exquisitely manufactured to depict this huge, military mover in all its glory and as most of the workings are on show, it necessarily involves a very comprehensive approach. The model, as is the vehicle, is centred around the massive four-cylinder diesel engine, most of which is visible when the model is complete, so your detailing and weathering-work won’t go to waste. The first twenty or so steps in the instructions show the engine’s construction; rather impressive. The subsequent stages describe how the chassis elements almost strap onto the engine with the running gear following it, and finally the tracks. Each link builds up from four parts which need perfect alignment. Friulmodels will be preferable we’d say.
EBBRO, JAPAN
TYRRELL 002 1971 BRITISH GP www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:20 • MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS • KIT NUMBER; EMSF-1 008 Last issue, we looked at Ebbro’s 1:20 1973 Tyrrell 003 and this time we have the earlier ‘002 from 1971, specifically the British Grand Prix of that year. As with the 003, this kit comes with Ebbro’s excellent Ford DFV V8 engine which is simultaneously easy to build and very finely detailed. It’ll come alive with the addition of ignition cables and transparent fuel lines. The Tyrrell 002’s distinctive side-mounted radiator pipes are included and they will need very careful installation to avoid glue marks where the pipes mount to the body. Alternative styles of upper body cowling are provided so the modeller can build either Jackie Stewart or Francois Cevert’s cars; tall and short mirror mounts are provided. This is another of Ebbro’s little masterpieces and a must-have kit for any fan of 1:20 Formula One.
An amazing achievement, with detail on every conceivable surface
Another of Ebbro’s miniature F1 triumphs and a real pleasure to build
Tracks a little daunting but still very usable
Cockpit can be improved with the use of a three-dimensional seat harness

MODULATION & LIGHT TECHNIQUES
JAVIER SOLAR, MIG JIMENEZ, AMMO ISBN 8-432074-060055 www.migjimenez.com Over the last few years, the ‘modulation’ technique and other painting treatments associated with it have become well known to amour modellers and it appears frequently in modelling publications worldwide, TMMI included! If you are curious about these processes and fancy trying them for yourself, this book will guide you through the theory and practice, showing us exactly what it looks like in its purest, pre-weathered form – through the use of clear, computer generated diagrams (the ‘theory’) – onto the ‘practice’ where we see various models undergoing treatment. Intelligently, the authors have shown each model subject right through the process; modulation on its own looks very artificial but under subsequent layers of weathering, we see how subtle the effect can become. The photos are reproduced large (ideal for detail acquisition for those of us with ‘vintage’ eyeballs) and the paper and print quality is flawless. Even if you are not yet fully convinced by these ‘new’ processes, give this book a go, it will open your eyes to some very effective and easily reproducible ways of creating depth and visually interesting tones on your armour models. PUMA HEAVY APC, CENTURION BASED APC IN IDF SERVICE - PART 1
MICHAEL MASS, ADAM O’BRIEN, DESERT EAGLE PUBLISHING ISBN 978-965-91635-7-1 www.aviationbookcentre.com The latest book from Desert Eagle Publishing has arrived on TMMI’s book reviews desk (okay, we only have one desk for everything) and this time the subject is the IDF Puma armoured personnel carrier. This brutally business-like machine is based on the British post-war Centurion tank which was provided by Britain to Israel in the 1960s. Fast forward a few decades and we come to the Puma, an APC that used the redundant hulls and running gear of the Centurions. This production shows us the Puma in great detail; a set of walk-around photos document the exterior (plus a few interior shots), revealing the key mechanical parts, welding lines, foundry numbers, armourplate thicknesses plus textures, colours and markings, all of which are like gold dust for modellers. What is also clear to see is just how varied the IDF sand-grey colour can look depending on the lighting conditions and dirt build up, something which is a useful reference for any recent IDF machine. This is another of Desert Eagle’s excellent reference manuals and is an essential volume for anyone who takes their IDF modelling seriously. MN

KIT PREVIEW
TRUMPETER 1:35 SOVIET (9P117M1) LAUNCHER W/R17 ROCKET OF 9K72 MISSILE COMPLEX ‘ELBRUS’ (SCUD B) ● KIT NO.01019
SCUD!
NATO REPORTING NAME:
TMMI's Editor looks into the enormous kit box of Trumpeter's spectacular new 1:35 Scud B missile and launcher vehicle
T
he Soviet designed and built 'Scud B' and its vast launcher vehicle came to the general public's attention back in the early 1990s when the Iraqi Army deployed them in opposition to the Allied Coalition during operation 'Desert Storm', but the weapons-system has been around a lot longer; the missile and truck were actually designed in the early 1960s. Trumpeter's new kit of this leviathan arrived recently at TMMI and the first thing to strike us was the large kit box, necessitated by the nineteen sprues of polystyrene that carry the model's many, many parts. Open the instruction booklet to page four (there are thirty-six pages in total) and you'll immediately see that Trumpeter's creation is ahead of Dragon's Scud from the early 1990s in that it comes
with a full drivetrain, a feature lacking in the earlier model. Flick further through the booklet and we see that an engine and gearbox are provided, further plus-points for the new kit. In fact, it's not until stage fourteen in the instructions that construction moves from the chassis and switches to the cabin, demonstrating the complexity of the launcher's backbone. Each of the twin drivers' cabins is fully detailed inside and thanks to a clever system of bendable photo-etched brass 'hinges' the doors can be fitted in the open position so the interiors can be displayed. The missile-launch cabin is also comprehensively fitted out, with control panels, seat and other items of equipment all provided. As you can imagine, all the aforementioned sections build into sub-assemblies that
are fitted in turn to that massive rolling chassis; by stage twenty-seven the model really starts to look like a Scud launcher and then it's time to build the missile and launch-cradle. The missile is quite simple, being moulded in two halves to which the engine nozzle and fins are added; it's with the peripheral equipment where the parts-count accelerates once again. The kit has been designed to allow the missile to be displayed in the transport and launch-ready modes, with alternative piston parts for each position, plus working stabilisers at the rear. From our in-box review, this kit looks quite simply magnificent, with comprehensive detail inside and out, excellent instructions and very helpful colour illustrations. The chance to display the missile in either of its
The kit includes a complete drivetrain, something Dragon failed to do in their early 1990s release. Here we can see various items of hardware, all well detailed.

two modes is very welcome, as are the seven markings options, comprising decals for machines of the Afghanistan Army (2005), Armenian Army, Libyan Army (2011), Russian Army, two schemes for the Iraqi Army (Gulf War 1991, Iraqi-Iran War 1980-88) and an example belonging to the Iranian Army. The camouflage schemes range from the plain green of the Russian machine and the overall sand yellow of the Libyan and Iraqi armies to the complex, multi-tone camouflages of the Afghan, Iranian and Armenian Scud launchers. The only aspect of the kit I might change would be the wheels/tyres. Trumpeter's hub and tyre parts are very well detailed, but the flexible vinyl mouldings do not feature the characteristic weighted bulges where

the rubber contacts the ground. I'm pretty sure DEF Models will come up with a set of their flawless resin castings, which will be the finishing touch to this amazing 1:35 kit. ● MN MODEL SPEC TRUMPETER 1:35 SOVIET (9P117M1) LAUNCHER W/ R17 ROCKET OF 9K72 MISSILE COMPLEX ‘ELBRUS’ (SCUD B) KIT NO.01019 SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, PE, MW, WS, PC AVAILABILITY; Review sample kindly provided by Pocketbond Ltd. Extraordinary levels of detail, including a complete drivetrain and engine, as well as cabin interiors. The Editor’s Page... Tamiya’s re-release of the ‘Big Scale’ Lotus touches a nerve for the Editor
R O F E V O L
I
have to say I was amazed to see that Tamiya had re-issued (and improved) the 1:12 Lotus 49. Of all the Tamiya models that have passed through my hands over the last twenty-three years of working on TMMI (which is quite a few!) the big Lotus is the one that stirred up the most emotion in me; yes, I do get emotional about certain plastic kits. The reason for this is that in my childhood home, an original Tamiya 1:12 Lotus, built by my father, sat on the edge of a bookshelf, gradually gathering dust and shedding parts each time it was moved, or I should say, sneakily played with by me. The model held a certain fascination for me, its working suspension (with fabulously squeaky springs), steerable wheels and big, soft rubber tyres just crying out to

be squeezed and touched. The model reached quite a state of disrepair and during my mother's recent house-move it was almost certainly given a Viking funeral, albeit into the recycling bin. A lot of childhood memories were held in that tatty old model that I loved, and it was my first introduction to the Tamiya brand, because my dad kept the kit box. So, I will, when time permits, build this superb re-release, made even better with a sheet of photo-etched metal and machined aluminium intake trumpets. I think I must have Tamiya in my blood! See you again on April 16th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com
