FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE TAMIYA 1:35 FRENCH LIGHT TANK AMX-13 ● KIT NO.35349

new-tool AMX-13 in 1:35 came as quite a surprise from Tamiya, but the more one looks into the background of the subject (as we can read in the reference article commencing page twelve this issue) it was a significant design and one that took part in various conflicts worldwide. Tamiya's kit is a tidy little production that features an elevating turret (if the moulded dust covers are left off) plus a circular photo-etched screen for the engine-cooling air intake. The suspension comes with individually moulded swing-arms with the wheels mounting in the conventional manner with polycaps. The turret can rotate in the normal way. The injection-moulded parts are finely detailed as you'd expect, with perhaps some compromises with the headlight brushguards, which, while having been designed to be resilient for assembly, do look over-scale and will need thinning down by the modeller. The other compromise is the use of one-piece tracks which cannot convey the track-sag often (but not always) seen on the AMX-13. This seems a little odd, because Tamiya's new 1:35 SU-76M kit – on release now – uses superior, moulded link-and-length tracks formed from kit plastic. Construction starts with the suspension and this presents no problems, just work methodically, follow the instructions closely and clean up all traces of the 'scars' where the parts were attached to their sprues. Don't forget to drill out the location holes in the transmission cover (B3) from the inside as this will be impossible once that parts has been cemented to the main hull moulding. Unless you plan to remove the upper hull at a later stage, you can ignore parts C47, C46 and the polycap, shown in Step 2.

The mounting strips were drilled out and few of the fasteners added to suggest where the fabric had been removed The apertures for the commander's periscopes were thinned out. No vision blocks are included but this suits the neglected appearance of the AMX that the author was aiming for, so none were added

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE TAMIYA 1:35 FRENCH LIGHT TANK AMX-13 â&#x2014;? KIT NO.35349

I chose to depict the gun barrel's travel lock in the deployed position; this is not shown in the instructions but it is easy to accomplish and adds an interesting visual element to the front of the vehicle. I have to say I have little interest in finishing this model as a vehicle in service with the French Army; I much preferred the idea of a tank that had several owners and had fought in various guerrilla wars and was now residing in the 'boneyard' of a museum of a private collection somewhere, occasionally driven, but neglected. With this in mind, I had no qualms about leaving off the worst of the headlight brushguards (parts C56 and C57) as they proved impossible to thin down. I did attack the main guards with a fresh scalpel blade to give them a more scale-like appearance and the results can be seen in the accompanying photos. Not perfect, but better, I think. I also added some splits and tears to the rubber road-wheel tyres and some dents and dings to the mudguards and rear-mounted stowage bin. I cut off one rear mudguard entirely and replaced the stowage lockers on the righthand side track guard with pieces of plastic card to suggest what had been in that location. A vehicle in this condition would have lost its tools long ago, so I made some empty stowage brackets from photo-etched brass strip; even these were depicted in a damaged condition. To represent the tracks in a realistic manner, I will use Friulmodel metal links and I will talk about this, and the model's painting and weathering next issue. â&#x2014;?

AMX-13 IN DETAIL Zak Sex takes a close-up look at the AMX-13 French Light Tank

he Gallic sports car with a punch, France's chic light tank turned heads from its inception. The AMX-13 was France's first post war tank, an innovative design which utilized an oscillating turret, magazine-fed main gun and rear-based turret with an engine to the fore. It was designed as an air-portable vehicle and as such was lightly armoured, but powered by a SOFAM Model 8Gxb eight-cylinder engine giving it a top speed of sixty kilometres per hour. The AMX-13 was to be armed with a range of main guns over its life time, from the introductory 75mm, the 90mm right up to the 105mm. It is interesting to note that not everything about the AMX was

entirely new; its first main armament was in fact a copy of the Kwk42 or L70 main gun mounted in the German WWII Panther. With its sleek modern design the light weight AMX-13 was a real departure from tank design to date and perhaps this explains its remarkable sales success, with over seven and a half thousand of all types produced (including APCs ,SPGs and AA gun variants) produced between 1953 and 1985 and slightly more than half of these being exports. Over the decades since its introduction the AMX-13 has seen much action, firstly with the French army itself during the invasion of Suez with British forces in 1956 and in the longer and bloodier campaign in Algeria, where

it was of little real use. It was with the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and Indian army that the AMX-13 saw real tank combat. The Israeli forces first used the AMX during their involvement in the Sinai in collusion with France and Britain in 1956. It was during the ferocious tank battles of 1967 that the Israelis discovered the weakness of the French tank's light armour, with heavy loses at Rafah junction and Jiradi leading to the AMX being phased out of service and sold off to Singapore and Indonesia. It must be noted however that in the hands of a tank ace such as Lt Giora Weiss of the IDF the AMX could prove very lethal as he was to knock out a number of 40 ton Patton tanks at close

quarters. Meanwhile the Indian army used the AMX-13 in their ongoing battles with neighbouring Pakistan, these low slung vehicles ambushing Pakistani M47, M48 and Type 59s in the sugarcane fields of west Pakistan. The AMX also saw action in Lebanon with various factions and in Cambodia with Lon Nol's forces against North Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge forces in a series of disastrous engagements. Finally, in one of the most protracted conflicts to date, it saw service with Moroccan forces against the Polisario in their decades long occupation of the western Sahara. It has been a long and interesting road for this little tank, one must agree. â&#x2014;?

ver the years, the British aviation industry has produced a huge range of aircraft, quite a few of which could be considered ‘beautiful’; Supermarine Spitfire, Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde – with France – and the DeHavilland Mosquito perhaps? The Avro Shackleton is, alas, not amongst them. Maybe ‘workmanlike’ is the kindest word we could use to describe this four-engined, Avro Lancaster/Lincoln-based machine. But form follows function and the Shackleton was designed with a very serious purpose; to patrol Britain’s waters on anti-submarine warfare duties

during the terrifying years of the Cold War. The aircraft also took part in search and rescue and AEW (airborne early warning) roles, so it was a highly important machine and I shouldn’t really make fun of its ungainly looks. Revell’s kit is an all-new tooling depicting the AEW.2 and as such comes with the huge, chin-mounted radar bulge, which adds to the fun. The kit’s airframe exterior is covered with representations of the aircraft’s famous rivets (how could we have a Shackleton without them?), and though they are moulded as tiny recesses, the look is still captured. Unlike Airfix’s new-tool 1:72 kit of the Shackleton MR2, Revell’s release does not feature a full interior, but the provision of front and rear cabins is more than adequate; the rear crew door can be fitted in the open position so at least some of the internals can be viewed after completion. nice and can be further enhanced with Eduard photo-etch. Surface detail across the rest of the model parts is excellent and care will be needed when cementing up the major structures to avoid damage being inflicted to fine recessed and raised mouldings. The bomb-bay doors can be fitted in the open or closed positions and if left open, the excellent detail in the bay roof can be seen. The decals provide two options, both from 8 Squadron RAF Lossiemouth – one from 1973, the other 1981 – both in overall grey. A very attractive production by Revell and a highly significant subject to choose. The main wing is supported by an internal, box-section spar offering great strength, necessary for a large-scale model with a significant wingspan. None of the control surfaces are hinged, but they are posable in neutral or drooped positions. When you look at the sheer size of the model's wheels, it becomes apparent that they are key focal points, so Tamiya have moulded the tyre treads in small sections allowing maximum detail to be preserved on the parts with no hard-to-remove moulding seams that would be unavoidable in a flexible material. Also, the tyres come with the exact degree of weighted 'sag' on their ground contact points, something that would be close to impossible to recreate in a perfectly round vinyl tyre; just brilliant.

e have covered the build-up of this kit before, so in this article I will talk mostly about the techniques I used to prepare and paint the exterior airframe. Even though this kit is more than ten years old, it is simply perfect; you can't find a better one on the market even today and its price is acceptable too. If you don't want a highly detailed model, aftermarket products are not necessary. You can find many choices in the box: blades, bombs, drop tanks, rocket launchers, open or closed cowling flaps and a pilot is included, as well. The moulding is accurate with many fine details.

QUICK AND EASY CONSTRUCTION

I decided early on I wanted a natural metal Razorback so I started work with the riveting. I used riveting plan in the proper scale and I copied the lines with a pencil and flexible ruler onto the kit parts. After drawing this on I could make the rivets very quickly with my riveting tool. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sand back the rivets at this stage, I decided to do this later, after the first metal layer, because this way I could create some texture in the finish. Before painting I added some extra wiring to the engine but the cockpit was detailed enough for closed canopy. Every part was glued with Tamiya Extra Thin Cement; there weren't any gaps, so filling and sanding wasn't necessary.

The author painted the cockpit parts with mixed Tamiya acrylics. Pre-shading techniques was used for shadows and light drybrushing to enhance the raised details. Vallejo's water-soluble acrylics were applied with a small round brush and enhanced the raised details with drybrushing technique

The paintwork began with an Alclad 2 Gloss Black base layer

Before painting, everything was checked for fit and the cockpit, wheel-bays and engine were sealed off with Tamiya masking, then the surface was cleaned with alcohol. In this view we can also see the lines of rivets created by the author

Once dry, the home-made rivets were sanded back with a piece of wet, worn Micro-Mesh abrasive. This step resulted in the first texturing effect around the rivets

After the gloss black base the author airbrushed on a simple background metallic layer with Alclad 2 White Aluminium, totally covering the surface

The author faded the first texture layer with Alclad Polished Aluminium

After the first texture layer, dark metallic paints were sprayed (Dark Aluminium and Steel) onto the areas of typical high wear; the wingroot and around the engine. This layer was an important basis for the next textures

The second metallic texturing was sprayed over the 'salted' areas with Alclad 2 White Aluminium. This process requires some experience with the metallic paints and is not recommended for beginners. After removing the salt with a wet toothbrush, the second metal texture layer became visible

After the painted areas had dried, the author applied a salt mask on the entire surface by spraying water and dropping different sized salt crystals over the wet areas

V After the second texture layer, some panels were masked off with Tamiya tape and a mixture of Dark Aluminium and Steel metal paints were used to subtly to make these panels darker. The author didn’t cover the surface totally but let the textures remain visible

After the metallics were on, the other colours were applied using mixed Tamiya acrylics and Tamiya masking tape. The author used a sponge for texturing and fluid mask for chipping on the nose and on the leading edges. Finally, the entire surface was covered with Alclad 2 Aqua Gloss again

The author fell in love with the design of 'Kansas Tornado' so he chose Barracuda decals. It is perfect from every aspect, but he wasn’t all that impressed with the printing quality of the nose art. Mr Mark Softener (albionalloys. co.uk) was used and after drying, the decals were riveted again, textured with acrylic paints and finally protected with Aqua Gloss. Before applying the colour-washes, the entire surface was gently polished

METAL V TEXTURISED PAINTING STEP BY STEP

I think a natural-metal surface is one of the biggest challenges for modellers. Metallic paints have specific characteristics and these require some experience. Some months ago I experimented with Alclad 2 metal paints and I got to understand the characteristics of this amazing paint. I also got some practice by using them too. I studied many archive photos of real natural-metal aircraft during the war and I noticed the metal surface is never homogenous. It was attacked by the weather and got covered with dirt, so we can see many oxidation effects on it. Many modellers simulate these effect with filters, but I wanted to create a real texturised metal surface. That is why I used my special painting process that I discovered during previous projects. I used multiple metallic layers and created three different metal textures â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with sanding, with salt mask and with drybrushing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and finally unified the effects with a last transparent layer. Only the first metallic paint layer was totally opaque; in all the other steps I sprayed very thin transparent layers and faded/blended the results with Alclad 2 Polished Aluminium which is a little bit transparent. The weathering process is a very important step for me, because I think it gives life to the models. Usually I divide the weathering process

After a few minutes a darker colour-wash was used (with a smaller round brush) concentrating on the panel lines and the extra worn areas

After about fifteen minutes the excess paint was removed with a dry cloth

The remaining colour-washes were texturised with a sponge and odourless enamel thinner

Finally, some areas were totally cleaned of colour-wash with a Q-Tip

'global' effects over the entire model surface and to follow this are localised effects applied to limited areas. The kit was fast and easy to build without any problems. The riveting was boring, but after drawing the lines I worked quickly and the home-made rivets were perfect for metal finish. The painting process was a little bit complicated, but I think it was worthwhile because I like this texturised metal surface. I was delighted with the final result and this is one of my favourite kits. I immediately bought a bubbletop D and M version too! I think I'll build a highly detailed Tamiya P-47 soon. ●

The prop blades were first painted silver and liquid mask then dabbed on with a sponge.

To create localised effects the author used fine airbrush work. The exhaust stains were painted and more dirt added to the wingroot and around the engines

STILL SEXY AT SIXTY! The Citroën DS celebrated its sixtieth birthday last year and Ebbro marked the occasion with a superb new 1:24 kit of the DS19 version. Fabrice Maréchal builds it for TMMI

reated by Italian designer Flaminio Bertoni, the DS was the result of a project initiated by the CEO of Citroën, Pierre-Jules Boulanger. Presented to the public at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, the DS19 was its major attraction. The car had a bold, even revolutionary design for the time, featuring many innovations that marked it out from other automobiles; power steering, hydraulically operated gearbox, disc brakes

at the front and more. Another important innovation was the monoline steering wheel, designed to avoid depressing the rib cage of the driver in the event of severe frontal impact. The comfort was outstanding with hydropneumatic suspension, a specific characteristic of the brand. The DS was quickly adopted by high society and elected representatives of the Republic, to General de Gaulle, who made it the official car of the presidency.

1. Ebbro moulded the ribs on the rear pillars and the author accentuated their depth so they would not disappear under the paint. In the process, other engraved areas of the body were treated the same way, with the back of an X-Acto blade 2&3. In some photos, the front wings seemed to have an unsightly rib. Not finding this rib to my taste, the author removed it by sanding, making sure to keep the rounded shape of the wings. Finally, the body and its parts were sanded with 1,200-grit abrasive 4. Contrary to the instructions, the engine bulkhead (part C5) is directly affixed to the inside of the body as specified in step 4, but without the dash. This will be installed later. The body and its parts were then thoroughly washed 5. The Gravity Colors grey primer was first applied with a brush in all the engraved areas, then all airbrushed in several thin layers followed by a thicker coat. This fine primer goes on very easily but can not hide the flaws of an unprepared body

6. The main colour chosen by the author was none other than the famous Gulf Blue which, while not an 'official' colour, does a good job of representing the pastel shades of the time. The primer was dry-sanded with 1,500-grit abrasive paper, with water. The body was washed again and then the blue was applied by brush into the engraved detail. 7. To paint the roof and its pillars, the author's choice fell on Gravity Colors 'Ivory'. The body was then masked off and the rear pillars painted with a brush and the rest, including the roof (B10), in several thin successive sprays. 8. Gravity Colors' two-part varnish was prepared according to the instructions and then applied to all body parts. This collection of parts was then stored away for one week to allow the varnish to harden. Once the paint was dry, the body was exposed. The surfaces were then sanded with a 4,000-grit Micro-Mesh abrasive with water, to ensure a good surface for the varnish and to remove any embedded dust

9. To airbrush the engine compartment and rear body panel with TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black, all surrounding areas were carefully masked off. Part C5 – previously fixed – was left exposed in order to also be painted black 10. Once unmasked, the engine compartment was drybrushed with a mixture of Humbrol Matt Black and Flesh. The engine compartment sidewall was drybrushed with a mixture of Humbrol Matt Black and Leather. The rear panel was not drybrushed. All engraved detail of the body was deepened with Humbrol 85 Coal Black 11

11&12. The windscreen pillars are relatively thick. In the two views above, the pillar on the left has been thinned. It's when the windscreen is installed that the difference can be observed 13. The windscreen was fitted into its frame and initially fixed with a drop of cyanoacrylate, deposited on the lower and upper central portions of the 'screen. Less 'risky' than the cyano, white glue was then applied – and distributed by capillary action – along the periphery of the windscreen to ensure optimal bonding. Five-minute epoxy was then deposited at the four fixing points of the windscreen frame 14. In the author's view, the dashboard lacks finesse in comparison with the engine. Attempts were made to enhance its surface detail without much success. Remember to fix the mirror (D6), onto the dashboard, Ebbro forgot to mention this in Step 3 of the instructions

PREVIEW! V IN Fresh out of the moulds, the test-shots made available to me for this article did not contain any indication as to the actual year the car represented. So I started by checking out the internet and indeed, looking in more detail at the body and comparing it with the first pictures that I had chosen, it was obvious that I had to make sure of a few things. I think it is a model year 1956, but I'm not 100% sure because the photos gleaned on the net do not guarantee that the vehicle is restored as per the original and the pictures of the time are not always of great clarity. Another problem for me, the instructions supplied with the kit were obviously not finalized. In addition, the draft manual that comes with the test-shots gave no information on paint colours to use. Not ideal for your author who suffers from colour blindness! The full production kit features colour indications within the instructions. Moreover,

15. The engine halves were assembled and details in the borders between the sump, engine block and gearbox were deepened to facilitate painting. The block was airbrushed in X-5 Green 16. After masking off the block, the gearbox and cylinder head were airbrushed XF-16 Aluminium and the sump in XF-56 Metallic Grey. Tamiya dark brown colour-wash was then applied to all previously painted surfaces. Drybrushing was then applied with the same shades to highlight the detail 17&18. The valve cover was painted with XF-56, the intake manifold XF-16, the brake discs with Metalizer Steel, the exhaust manifold with Metalizer Metal Burnt, the fan shroud in Metalizer Aluminum and the fan itself in XF-55 Deck tan. Each was then finished in the usual way; colour-washes and drybrushing

19. With the spare wheel installed, it was no longer possible to completely close the bonnet. To remedy the problem, the author thinned the tyre and the rim and removed the securing pin in the centre of the wheel. This trick is completely invisible when the wheel is in place 20. Assembly continues with the installation of the dashboard and steering column, followed by the engine and its peripherals. Some details were then touched in by brush to break the monotony of the black. The spare wheel was slightly dirtied-down with a brown colour-wash and the central nut touched in with black. This is actually an error because this 'nut' is an integral part of the wheel and must therefore be of the same colour, both on the spare wheel on the other four 21. The headlamp housings were fitted by removing their centring pins so they could be fixed with their sprue attachment points in a downwardfacing position, thus avoiding retouching. The bulb was painted in translucent yellow. Then the lenses were glued, also ensuring to remove their centring pins to position them also in the correct direction. The indicators were painted translucent orange and glued in place. Another error here; on a 1956 vintage DS, they should be white (clear glass and optical silver) with chrome surrounds 22. The cabin floor (part C16) was fully treated with Tenco Proto spray which creates a grainy texture, simulating carpet. The location points for the seats were masked off so they could be properly cemented in later 23. The front and rear seats were painted XF-60 Desert Yellow, then shaded with an oil paint colour wash in a natural earth shade. Drybrushing was then performed with the base colour, gradually thinning out 24. The parts to remain beige were masked off and the rest of the door panels were painted with the same blue as the body. Once dry, they were varnished with TS-13 Clear, via airbrush. The masks were removed, then the recessed detail accentuated with dark brown colour-wash

25. The floor was painted with XF-69 NATO Black, given a dark brown colour-wash, then drybrushed with XF-63 German Grey. The seats were the fitted. The interiors of the rear doors were fitted with their winders and handles, then glued directly to the doors 26 26. he Repsol Honda RC213V from the 2014 season has just landed, straight from Japan! The machine chosen by Tamiya is that of Marc Marquez, the 2014 MotoGP World Champion. To my regret, there is no possibility to build the No.26 machine of Pedrosa in the kit. The Honda RC213V was created by the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) in 2012. During that year, Dorna (the body that manages motorcycles championships, rather like the FIA) amended the regulations and authorised engines with a displacement of 1,000cc. Four machines were produced by the manufacturer; two for the official team (Repsol), one for Gresini Racing and one for LCR. The name RC213V breaks down as follows: RC; four-stroke engine, 213; 3rd generation of the 21st century, V; V engine.

THE TAMIYA KIT

As usual, Tamiya offers us a busy box of parts providing everything we need to make a very attractive model. The box contains injection-moulded polystyrene sprues plus tubing, screws, a small screwdriver, two sheets of decals (some will not be needed) and masking sheets for the painting stages. Within this build-up I will use Tamiya's 1:12 Honda RC213V '14 Front Fork Set (12667) which also includes a metal spring for the rear swing arm as well as modified plastic parts for the brake and hub. No doubt the artisans are already working to create Pedrosa's No.26 markings. After receiving the kit, the Editor said to me that I could change some elements without altering the final result too much. So I only added a few photo-etched screw-heads, springs on the exhausts, tyre valves and a set of axles for wheels, all from Top Studio. The original vinyl tubing was replaced with electrical wiring which looks more realistic. Finally, research on the internet allowed me to decide which elements should be covered with carbon fibre-effect decal, using two sheets from Ka Models.

bike's sub-structures, such as the engine, frame, fairing swing-arm. I noticed at this stage that the tank fairing would need to be built very solidly to avoid distortion during handling. The framework was assembled following the instructions. The rear suspension is slightly more complicated to assemble; the part is covered with numerous carbon fibre sections. Two options are available, either paint them satin black, or cover them with carbon-fibre decal. I chose the second option and for this, I initially created a series of templates made from masking tape before assembly and painting (it's less risky this way), putting the templates aside for later. The inside cavity of the swing-arm was filled with two-part putty (Greenstuff) and set aside until completely cured. During the drying time, other parts were cleaned-up and assembled. The set of parts was primed with Vallejo acrylic black and once dry, several layers of Zero Paints Super Fine Silver Metallic were applied, creating a very convincing metallic effect. Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color 'Black' was applied neat by brush to bring out the surface details. Once dry well (this takes about an hour or less if you use a hairdryer), I used a new brush moistened with thinner to clean off the excess. Acrylic gloss varnish was brushed on to the carbon flat areas to protect them.

ENGINE

Little improvement was needed to create a compelling-looking power unit; just some photo-etched bolt-heads to detail the engine block and clutch housing, plus some carbon-fibre decal in places. The base colour of the engine block is the same as the frame (Super Fine Metallic Silver), but other housings and the cylinder block were finished with the Zero Paints equivalent of XF-56 Metallic Grey. Contrary to the instructions, the clutch housing is not a gold colour (XF-31 Titanium Gold) but rather a silver shade (XF-32 Titanium Silver). The intake tracts were covered with Alclad 2 Chrome, although all will be completely invisible after installation. Photo-etched cable ties were used in key areas, also to increase the overall realism. Finally, thin electrical wire of different diameters was added to complete the installation.

the fluorescent orange wheels, using Zero Paints' materials. Not yet having at my disposal the new TS-96 Fluorescent Orange paint produced by Tamiya, I settled for what I had on hand. Looking back, I was too confident; the standard Repsol orange was too dark for this 2014 machine, but it was too late to repaint the rims, so I left them unchanged. Since the writing of this article, Zero Paints (www.hiroboy.com) have created a new set of Repsol paints that includes the updated shades. The rear brake disc was perforated for added realism and the front discs were detailed with photo-etched parts and painted with the new Zero Paints colour 'Carbon Ceramic Grey'. Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color was applied throughout to accentuate the details and many pieces of electrical wire were also added to simulate the various hoses and connection cables. The new parts in anodized aluminium are a real plus for this model; the level of realism has been significantly improved. The instructions recommend to paint the fenders satin black, but in reality these parts were made of carbon-fibre. Again, decal from Ka Models was used to cover these parts and I made several templates so I wouldn't have to cover the parts in one go. Given the complex shapes of these mouldings, I used decal softener and a hairdryer to ensure that no wrinkles and bubbles would occur. Several coats of satin varnish were applied once the decals had set and had been cleaned of adhesive.

the paint applied over it. The first colour was applied shortly after: Zero Paints pure white. I allowed the paint to dry for a few days before continuing with the rest of the decor. The masks were accurately trimmed out then placed/peeled several times on a clean surface in order to reduce their tackiness, which will help to avoid the paint tearing during unmasking as the paint is quite fragile at this stage. Tamiya designed the masks well and by following the instructions to the letter, no unpleasant surprises were encountered. Once the paint layers had completely dried, it was time to begin applying the gloss coats. I used Zero Paints two-part varnish, which offers an extremely bright and deep finish. It begins with the application of several thin layers, spaced a few minutes apart, finishing with one, heavier wet layer. The glossed parts were left to cure and put aside for a full week before being re-polished and 'frosted' by sanding with a very fine grit abrasive. This levels the steps between the layers of paint, the thickness of decals and removes unwanted dust particles. The inside of the fairing was painted in satin black, and a carbon-fibre decal layer was applied to the inside of the upper cowling. There is no need in this case to cover all internal cowling surfaces with decal, unless you wish to display the motorcycle without fairings. It only remained to affix some PE screws and rivets to complete the cowling. Personally I would have preferred to have separately printed sponsor decals and I might have replaced the Tamiya carbon-fibre decal with another, more in-scale product.

FINAL DETAILS (EXHAUSTS ETC)

Tamiya provides very accurate replicas of the exhausts, however, they don't feature the mesh over the output apertures, so I decided to alter the parts; the tips were drilled out, their interiors were carefully hollowed out and sanded and three rectangular holes were also removed. Looking in my spares box I found a PE radiator grille (for the Yamaha M1) and the mesh pattern seemed to correspond exactly to the Honda's outlet. The new PE part was cut to shape using scissors, shaped and glued in place. I also added the securing springs, absent from the kit. The exhausts' painting process began by applying a thin layer of black, to highlight possible defects and provide the basis for the colour, a mix of Zero Paints Titanium Silver and Metallic Gold. The weld seams were covered using a liquid mask (Mr Hobby) and then pure Titanium Silver was airbrushed on, later patinated with Winsor and Newton Indian ink to simulate the heating staining of the metal. Finally, a thin layer of Titanium Silver was sprayed on again in order to blend the colours together. Having unmasked the welds, I applied a very diluted black colour-wash over to accentuate the details. I deliberately focused my efforts on the visible parts of the exhausts.

a superb 1:12 bike kit! My only regret is that it didn't come with racing numbers for Pedrosa's machine. Nevertheless, I am certain that artisanal manufacturers will release accessories to create new versions of this kit. I see myself already contemplating the 2015 'VDS' variant (private teams always have earlier versions). It took me only a month to complete the full assembly and prepare the article; I hope you will be inspired to acquire this gem for your collection. www.airbrushes.com Lifecolor have created a range of 'liquid pigments' of varying colours for the weathering of military vehicles, the latest of which is 'Detail Emphasizer for Tanks and Vehicles' and from a desktop test on an old built-up model they appear to have a lot of potential for realism. They're water-based materials that carry an extremely fine pigment in suspension that flows like heavily thinned acrylic paint. The liquid dries off quickly but, unlike acrylics, the material remains soft enough to be manipulated with a paintbrush dampened with plain water. Amazingly, the kit dates from 1989 but the parts look very modern and well rendered. The most appealing touch (for this reviewer) is the open missile-hatch option with two SS-20 ICBMs which, with a little work from the modeller, could be fitted above the hatches to replicate a launch, frozen in time. The display stand is the ideal finishing touch for this imposing and well moulded kit. MN

The kit comes moulded on two sprues of white polystyrene plus a small clear sprue carrying the cockpit windows and a sheet of decals for the ‘Air Dolomiti’ airline. Detail on the airframe is extremely subtle and appropriate for a modern commercial jet and the undercarriage is quite refined for a 1:144 model. The cockpit interior is a very effective modular design with seats, bulkhead and even a detailed centre console. Some flash was in evidence on our sample but this will be very simple to remove. Slightly more concerning are some sinkmarks on the underwing flap fairings but even these will be easy to conceal with filler. MN

All the main structural parts are cast in green/ grey resin and the detail is extremely fine, with some impressive undercuts too. The cabin is a fantastic one-piece casting with beautiful detail on the front face and inside too; the wonders of digital design/production. The kit comes with the space-frame type towing bar in photo-etched brass and this might need a folding tool to form a perfectly square structure – it looks great though. This is a superb little model with top detail and a very decent range of markings. MN

The kit is quite well detailed for an injection-moulded polystyrene production, although open structures such as radar arrays will look more in-scale if replaced with photoetched brass parts. The hull is split at the waterline so a seascape build would be straightforward; no sawing required. The finishing touch are the dragon decals for the forward hull sides – very dramatic! MN

This release comes with ‘G’ and ‘J’ sprues which carry the wing, fuselage and fuselage gun cowling parts and – by following the instructions and using the indicated components – you can build an A-5 with the correct bumps and lumps. There are multiple options on the sprues (propellers, wheels, UC doors, cockpit detail and more) so it’s essential to study the instructions so you use the right parts. Fantastically subtle detail on the airframe replicates the Fw190’s major exterior structural lines and access hatches etc., which can be later highlighted with colours washes if desired. This release includes an armoured gun turret fitted with the ‘Ma Deuce’ M2 Browning HMG, moulded in sand-coloured plastic on its own sprue. The M2 is definitely one of the better ones we’ve seen and features an open-tipped muzzle and well rendered cooling holes in the barrel jacket. Markings are provided for a sand/brown camouflaged machine of the French army, with the gun turret in green/brown/ black and one front fender in green which adds a visually appealing touch of colour variation. The model comes with a thorough cabin interior that includes radio set, .50cal ammunition can racks plus roof-mounted air-con system. Fabulous! MN

Tiger Model haven’t attempted to mould too much in place; the kit is extensively detailed on its exterior, with many small parts (including PE grilles) being added to the hull and turret throughout the whole assembly sequence, a very effective approach. The additional armour comes in the form of one-piece panels that affix to the hull, significantly altering the look of the vehicle. This is a really great-looking model and with the addition of DEF Model’s fantastic resin wheels with ‘weighted’ effect tyres, it will build into a very attractive miniature. MN

The car for this film is an amazinglooking thing and Moebius have been very quick off the mark in releasing their new 1:25 kit of it. The parts come on eight sprues of blue/grey polystyrene plus one sprue in clear, topped off by four huge tyres in black vinyl. The all-black box is very slick and with striking ‘Batmobile’ graphics in yellow it looks superb. The instructions come in booklet form and the illustrations are very clear, supplemented by assembly notes. It’s a reasonably complex model (this is a good thing!), coming with engine detail, front suspension, armour shielding, two-seat cabin, multi-layer front wing and a wonderfully spidery support frame for the rear wing. Detail is excellent throughout and the model really captures the intimidating look of the ‘real’ thing. The fun with this kit will be in its painting! Both set-ups are offered in Moebius Models’ new ‘65 Plymouth Belvedere, which is a wonderfully evocative kit that uses original, brochure-style illustrations on the box-top and instruction sheet. The kit comes with optional engine builds, plus steel wheels with ‘dog-dish’ hubcaps or fivespoke alloys and fat rear tyres for both styles. Sadly the tyres have no sidewall markings but this isn’t too noticeable on the finished model, which is shown in colour on the reverse of the instructions, along with the underside and both builds of the engine, extremely handy. Surface detail is excellent, particularly on the engine which is a very good replica of the Max Wedge and/or Commando V8 426 unit. MN

SCANIA 143M TOPLINE 4X2 www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; 3910 The Scania 143M was launched in 1987 and was a popular heavy-haulage choice throughout the late ‘80s and 1990s. In 1993 Italeri released their initial version of the R143 Streamline upon which this release is based and like almost all of the kits in this range, it was ahead of its time in terms of detail and design. In this latest iteration, we have the open-sided, heavy haulage version with standard front bumper and it is still a ruggedly handsome beast. The chassis is the full build-up type with rails and crossmembers all moulded individually. The big V8 diesel is remarkably well detailed, something at which Italeri really excel; it will be fun to paint and weather, if you’re a weathering addict like me! The cabin interior is also fully depicted, although it is lefthand drive only. This is somewhat at odds with the GB number plate options provided on the decal sheet; maybe it could be an import. LOST IN SPACE THE DERELICT www.moebiusmodels.com SCALE; 1:350 MATERIALS; IM, MR KIT NUMBER; 965 From the September 22nd 1965 episode of the ‘Lost In Space’ TV show entitled ‘The Derelict’ comes this rather appealing alien ship, one which turned out to be anything but derelict when its ‘bubble creature’ alien crew were encountered. The subject is a good choice for Moebius Models as the ship’s design lends itself rather well model kit production, even though it looks particularly non-human in form. The main hull is made up from two, sixteen centimetre moulded hemispheres and here we have an interior of ‘neuron strands’ on a backdrop, all printed in colour on heavy card stock. The six-panelled hanger door assembly can be posed open or closed and the ‘emitter’ arrays on the propulsion unit come as delicate clear mouldings which will contrast nicely against the bulky hull. The kit even includes a little model of ‘Jupiter 2’ in either ‘legs up’ or ‘legs down’ mode. Fantastic! MN Very original subject choice and a must have for fans of kitsch TV sci-fi. ANTEX TCS 50W SOLDERING IRON

IN COMPLETE CONTROL Antex has introduced the first soldering iron with a temperature control and LCD display, all built into the contoured handle; TMMI takes a look

sually, the temperature of a soldering iron is controlled from a hefty base-station which can take up valuable real estate on the worktop, but the Antex TCS 50W has all this contained within its body. The 240V, 50-watt device frees up the workspace and shows its current temperature on the in-built display, ranging from a start-up heat of 200°C (392°F) to its maximum of 450°C (842°F). When we ran a quick desktop test, the iron reached 200°C remarkably quickly and it was a doddle to increase it with the buttons. Obviously one must allow for a little cool-down time when reducing the temperature, but this too was quick. The TCS 50W is ideal for scale modellers who wish to solder their photo-etched brass sets together, which offers hugely increased strength over superglued assembly. This is great for complex structures that can be completed before they are mated to the plastic structures of the kit and also when some weight-bearing ability is needed in the metal sub-assemblies. DR DAVID BAKER, HAYNES PUBLISHING www.haynes.co.uk ISBN 978-0-85733-767-2 • £25 from all good bookshops In my list of top ten favourite aircraft (a collection that includes the sublime Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird as well as the B-24 Liberator and F4U Corsair) the North American X-15 is in the low numbers, so I was delighted when Haynes’ latest Owners’ Workshop Manual arrived at the TMMI office for review. The book comes in Haynes’ familiar and much loved format of hard covers, high quality paper and print (192 pages including covers) and an exhaustive approach to the subject. That is certainly the case here, with a detailed background history being given to the aircraft (should that be spaceship?), from the earliest days of 20th century rocket propulsion (the Bachem Natter and Me163 Komet are described) right up to the final flights of the mighty STS Space Shuttle. It’s important to note that this isn’t ‘just’ a coffee table compilation of NASA Kodachrome eye-candy – this has been done in print numerous times and if you love this stuff as much as me, you’ll have those books already – here we are treated to a very thorough, technical examination of the extraordinary X-15 that will prove very rewarding to those fascinated by this era of experimental high-speed flight. Inside you’ll find a combination of contemporary colour and black and white photographs, plus diagrams and illustrations from the period. The images are generally fairly small but well captioned and pertinent to the overall story. When considering the millions of calculations needed for a programme of this complexity, it’s worth bearing in mind that it would have been done using slide rules and mathematical formulae in the 1950 and ‘60s. The rocket engine is looked at in detail and the accompanying text makes for an enlightening read; did you know, for example, that the X-15’s rocket combustion chamber could reach 2,760ºC? Staggering. The airframe and all other systems are examined in detail of course and more astonishing snippets will be found throughout, such as a photo of a nose undercarriage leg with a tyre-less wheel; the leg accidentally deployed at Mach 4.2 (3,222mph) and the tyre burnt off in the heat caused by air resistance at that speed, demonstrating just how extreme the conditions were when flying that close to the ‘edge of the envelope’. So, this book takes quite a technical approach to its presentation but by no means that it is a dry read. The author Dr David Baker takes the reader on a journey through the X-15 programme (which ran from 1954 to 1968) and it is an engrossing trip. You’ll find yourself wanting to build a model of this beautiful, sinister-looking rocket aircraft and Haynes’ new Owners’ Workshop Manual will be the ideal reference volume. Highly recommended. MN

GIRL AND HER DOG I

f you’re anything like me you will have a stash of model kits waiting to be built; just waiting for you being able to find enough time to get round to them. Until a brand new kit is released and that suddenly jumps to the front of the queue. I’m sure you will also probably have a number of kits that you can label “Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time”. One of those for me was a 1:6 resin figure kit of the actress Mila Jovovich posed as the title character from the film 'Ultraviolet'. Whilst the kit has a fantastic likeness to Miss Jovovich (the main reason for the initial purchase) her all-white costume would have lent towards a dull paint scheme, and so she was relegated to 'I will get round to it sometime' status. However, a few months ago I was having a tidy up and when I came across the kit I had one of those eureka, flash of inspiration moments and immediately knew what I was going to do to with the kit. I am a big fan of the Steampunk genre and over the years have built several dioramas in 1:35 which mainly involved a scratchbuilt vehicle with appropriately dressed figures and scenery. As the

Ultraviolet figure was quite bland I decided it would make an ideal starting point for a Steampunk character of my own design but at a larger scale than my previous genre attempts. I had some general ideas of what I would like to do and as further inspiration went through a number of books on the subject and searched the internet. During this time I decided that my Steampunk heroine should have a canine companion and decided to base this on my own dog, Honey. A search on eBay found a suitably sized ornamental dog for a reasonable price and this was duly ordered. Time to start work.

SOAPY TIME

As with all resin kits, before doing any work on them you need to thoroughly clean your parts. I then washed the resin to remove any residual mould release agent and grease. Once thoroughly dry I set about cleaning up the kit by using a grinding bit in my power tool; files and sanding sticks to remove seam lines and resin pour spouts. The kit had been very well cast and there were only a very small number of air holes that needed filling. The trickiest part of the clean-up

FULL-BUILD: STEAMPUNK FIGURE 1:6 SCALE RESIN FIGURE CONVERSION

V process was the removal of

a chunk of resin between the underside of the chin and the torso; because of the way the figure was posed it was difficult to get into the restricted space with my modelling tools and so I ended up taking away more than necessary and then re-sculpting the area with Aves two-part epoxy putty. The first alteration I made was to add a corset to the mid-torso (now that’s something you will not normally read in a model article) and created the corset 'bones' by gluing half-round plastic strips at regular intervals around the body. The tops of these were chamfered to accept the upper torso and I used the Aves putty to smooth the join between strips and body and sculpt creases and folds into the torso. Putty was then used to add further detail to the belt and the boots. I wanted the boots to have a vertical line of buttons and sculpted a flap with putty and using a strip of masking tape as a guide for the straight line. To the upper body I only added some cloth buckles to the shirt and a panel – that would be further decorated – to the left arm, which, by this time I had glued to the torso. My other port of call when it comes to detailing Steampunk models are the scenery sets created by Airfix for their short lived Science Fiction Miniatures Game, 'Robogear'. There

were two different sets that had various parts that could be clipped together to create different structures and which I have raided various times over the years for spare parts. A couple of the connecting pieces were glued to her arms and, again, blended in with Aves putty.

GOGGLE SEARCH

When adding detail to a scratchbuilt model I, like most modellers, reach for the spares box and rummage through surplus kit parts, but in this instance I made a trip to the local arts and craft shop and raided the jewellery making aisle. I glued some parts to the jacket and trousers and blended them in with the epoxy putty. No self-respecting Steampunk adventurer would be without a pair of goggles, which I decided to make perched on her forehead so as to not obscure her face. Using a section of brass tubing I cut two rings that were super-glued to her head. Thick gauge aluminium foil in conjunction with metal jump-rings were used to create the strap that would hold the goggles on the head and then epoxy putty was used to create the section of cloth that the eyepieces would be fastened to. As the initial construction was complete I gave the model a coat of grey primer as I find this works very well for showing up any remaining defects. A little filling and sanding was required to get the model to a satisfactory standard

before applying a coat of white primer. Figure modellers have different opinions as to what colour primer to use but I prefer white as I believe it makes the skin tones more vibrant, particularly as I use artist’s acrylic paint for flesh areas which is slightly translucent. To paint the flesh areas I mix up a batch of my standard flesh tone comprising equal parts of Liquitex Acrylic Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna and Titanium White. I create a number of increasingly darker shade tones by adding more Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber to the base colour and highlight colours by adding Unbleached Titanium White. I airbrushed the darkest flesh tone first and then worked from the recessed to the raised areas using increasingly lighter tones of flesh. Once I was satisfied with the skin tones I gave the model a coat of Games Workshop ‘Ardcoat' varnish to protect the work to date.

PEANUT BUTTER?

I painted the corset using a mix of colours using Vallejo Stone Grey and Off-White, again working from dark to light. After applying a protective coat of varnish I masked off this area using Tamiya masking tape. For the trousers I decided to break open my recently purchased set of acrylic paints from Scale 75 appropriately called 'Steam and Punk'. I sprayed a base colour mixed from Bosh Chestnut and Peanut Butter and then airbrushed pure Peanut Butter (these names are getting as silly as Games Workshop) to the raised areas. A spray coat of varnish protected the work to date and once dry stripes were added to the trousers using Tamiya masking tape. The stripes were added using Arbuckles Brown highlighted with a mix of Bosh Chestnut. Once dry the masking tape was removed and any touching up was done using a fine brush. turned my attention to the upper body and set about masking the flesh areas. Masking complex curves on large scale figures can be a bit of a pain and for many years now I have used Blu Tack, which moulds well to the curves of the model, but has quite a high level of tack and can remove the paint below, particularly if the model hasn’t been thoroughly cleaned beforehand: it also has a tendency to want to stick in crevices and tight spots. Earlier last year a colleague

recommended MXpression’s Panzer Putty for masking and I have not looked back. It is a silicone putty that easily moulds to the curves of the model but releases very easily when pulled away, leaving no residue behind. With the face masked I painted the shirt dark green using the Andrea 'Green' paint set, working, and this is going to start sounding repetitive, from dark to light going from the recesses to the raised areas. Prior to removing the masking I applied a coat of Liquitex Walnut Acrylic Woodstain, which was carefully wiped away before being completely dry to give a more aged appearance to the leather and increased the depths of the shadows. FACE TIME

It was now time to set aside the airbrush and start on the detailed hand painting. I started off by painting the eyes with a pink flesh colour created using my base flesh and some Liquitex Red Oxide. The 'whites' of the eyes are never pure white and so I create a colour using a small amount of the pink flesh, mixed with Titanium White and a very small dash of Payne’s Grey: this was lightened towards the centre of the eye. Burnt Umber to pure Black and then painted, going from dark to light working towards the centre again. The pupil was painted the same off-black, as were the eye lining and eyebrows. The lips were painted using the pink flesh colour with the addition of some Crimson Red. The hair was base painted black and then dry-brushed with Burnt Umber before being giving a black acrylic wash. The goggle strap was painted as per the jacket and chaps. All the metal parts were given a based coat of what Games Workshop used to call Tin Bitz before being dry-brushed with Vallejo Brass. With the painting of the figure complete I returned to the jewellery bits and bobs from the craft shop for additional detailing, although I did paint these once in place to give the model a consistent appearance. For very fine detailing I applied some unpainted cogs and wheels that had at one point been watch workings and which can be bought by weight on the internet. addition from the craft shop were self-adhesive hemi-spherical 'gems' that were used as lenses for the goggles and for additional detailing on the jacket sleeves. To bring everything together I applied various acrylic pin washes and pigment powders to enhance the shading. Before gluing the components together I glued in place some lace trim that was intended for making dolls’ clothes at the cuffs and underside of the shirt. The girl was then put to one side while I turned my attention to her doggie companion.

STEAMPUP

The dog was given a coat cut from thin gauge copper foil with strap and collar using strips of rivet textured plastic card. When I first started the project I didn’t have a firm idea with the final direction I wanted to go with the dog, but as I was walking one day with my Cairn Terrier, Honey, and saw her chase after a squirrel, only to be frustrated as the squirrel climbed a tree, I came up with the idea of a set of mechanical wings: no squirrel would be safe. down section of the Revell Mir Space Station that I had previously raided as parts for my Space: 1999 inspired “Uranus Probe” (pun intended). The wings were built with sections of the Robogear sets and detailing also raided from them. Before attaching the wings I set about painting the dog which was given a base coat mixed from Raw Sienna and Yellow Oxide: this was brush applied to ensure that it got into all the nooks and crannies of the fur. I then painted the fur using an airbrush in various shades of black and grey, using Honey as my source of reference. Washes and dry-brushing completed the painting of the fur. The mechanical parts were painted in a similar manner to those on the girl figure. So I won’t repeat myself, except to say that the main colour for the wings was Vallejo Copper. The wings were glued in place and final detailing consisted of more watch parts and sections of steel guitar strings to act as wing “actuators”.

After a little trial and error I decided on a final arrangement for girl and dog and drilled a hole in the base to accept a section of brass rod that could be inserted into a similar hole in the underside of the girl’s foot to give the figure greater stability than gluing alone. All I had to do now was wonder where to put it and how to dust it. ●

GUNDAM IT!

hat do you think of Gundam models? Obviously they are hugely popular in their home country of Japan and appear on a monthly basis in the Japanese modelling magazines, but I suppose I have become a little blasé when I see them now. But if they are given a special treatment such as some heavy weathering, they can look really cool and that’s when I begin to look more closely at them. I have a couple of articles in had on this subject, one of which is the magnificent beast you see on this page. If you are mostly unconvinced, I hope I can change your mind with a smattering of the vast robot killers in TMMI, but don’t worry, we’re not becoming a Gundam only magazine!
