LONG-LEGGED

WAR BIRD TMMI welcomes Spanish master modeller JM Villalba, with his exquisite rendition of Tamiya's 1:48 Fieseler Fi 156C Storch WW2 spotter-plane

T

o celebrate their 100th aircraft kit release, Tamiya created a superb new kit, a model that I wanted to build for a long time; the Fieseler 'Storch', the famous Stork spotter/liaison aircraft, a design that is very different to the typical, well known fighters of the Luftwaffe. The model is superbly moulded and exquisitely detailed and the fit of parts is very impressive. Probably the most critical point of this model is the assembly of the wings along with the

complicated canopy glazing, but Tamiya has engineered the assembly (using some very effective metal parts) to make this easier; these parts also provide rigidity to the structure of the wings and landing gear. The model is complemented by a magnificent reproduction of the Argus engine that can be shown uncovered to add more detail to the model. For the markings, I selected an Fi156 C3 'DN+SL' (W.Nr 5874) painted in the desert scheme of RLM 78-79. â—?

In addition to the photo-etched parts that come with the model, I used Eduard's photo-etched set (49-408) to add more detail to the cockpit of the Storch. For the seat belts, I made my own, using lead foil of 0.2mm thickness and buckles made with 0.2mm copper wire. I prefer to make lead foil belts because although you have to put in a little more work, I think that they can be positioned and painted in a more natural way than photo-etched parts.

Both sides of the cockpit were complemented with photo-etched parts, plus some electrical cabling made with 0.2mm copper wire. A dry-fit of the cockpit prior to the painting steps proved all the parts fitted very well; the photo-etched items plus some scratchbuilt ones make the cockpit detail look great.

The canopy masking sheet is not pre-cut, so I used a new X-Acto knife and a metal ruler. With the help of tweezers I positioned the masks on the glazing panels. The process is easy since they are numbered on the sheet. Internal masks were also used so the inner framework could be neatly painted.

To begin the process of painting the cockpit, I airbrushed a layer of RLM 02 Grau. To make this colour with Tamiya acrylic paints I used the following formula; XF-22 (60%), XF-52 (25%), XF-3 (5%), XF-2 (10%), thinned with Tamiya X-20A at a ratio of 60% paint to 40% thinner.

To begin the process of fading and shading in the cockpit, I first airbrushed a ‘shadow’ layer over the base colour, around the parts of the cockpit. To make this shading I used XF-1 Flat Black, diluted with isopropyl alcohol at a ratio of 85% alcohol to 15% paint.

To add some contrast to the shadows, I applied a highlight effect to certain raised parts in the cabin. The colour that I used was a mixture of Vallejo acrylics in the following proportion: Yellow Brown 912 (75%), Military Green 975 (5%), Flat Black (20%).

The finished cockpit before closing up the fuselage halves; the addition of photo-etched and scratchbuilt parts creates a very scale-like effect.

Preparing part K-6 to add the hydraulic line for the brakes. I added some small Evergreen plastic parts that would work as the hydraulic line holders. Finally I added the hydraulic line that I made with stretched sprue, fixed with cyano glue.

To complete this magnificently detailed model, I decided to make the fuel tanks that are located within the wings. I built these parts using Evergreen plastic in various thicknesses.

I began by removing the panels that cover the wing By using an X-Acto blade, I pared away the fuel tanks; to do this I used the traditional technique remaining plastic of the panel. of drilling the inside of the edge of the panel.

Next, I added the partitions to form the fuel tank cavity. With the help of a pencil, I marked out the areas where I would cut the parts. To glue the new parts, I used Tamiya Extra Thin Liquid Cement..

Finally I added the internal structural detail of the wing. To do this I used acetate sheet of 0.12mm thickness. Due to the parts being small and delicate I glued them with cyano gel, which allowed me some extra time to place the parts in the right position before the glue dried.

To paint the cylinder heads, flat black was first applied then a metallic effect was created on the cylinders by applying graphite dust (from a pencil) with a brush.

To make the fuel tanks, I used again some plastic sheet from Evergreen. I added final details, like the fuel tank belts, using tin sheet.

Then, using a file, I refined the panel edges, taking great care not to damage the edges.

Final view of the wing fuel tank prior the painting process; the other side is a mirror-image of this. Note the fine cabling leading to the filler.

The final details added to the engine were ignition wires that were made with stretched sprue. Once this was in place, they were carefully painted with acrylics by brush.

The underside of the model was painted RLM 78 Using the Tamiya Weathering Master Set, I applied some ‘dust’ using the ‘Sand’ pigment on the Hellblau (light blue) using a mixture that I made from concave parts of the fuselage, just visible here. Tamiya Acrylics; XF-2 (70%) and XF-8 (30%). Around the fabric fuselage's stitching, I applied a colour-wash of very dark grey acrylic paint.

The top and the sides of the fuselage were painted RLM 79 Sandgelb II (sand yellow). I made this colour with Tamiya acrylics; XF-59 (75%) and XF-10 (25%), thinned with X-20A. The mixture was matched by using the Luftwaffe colour chart from Eagle Editions.

Weathering the fuselage. To enhance the relief of the internal structure I airbrushed a highlight on the top of the raised detail and in the same manner, some shading below the structure. Then I reproduced some scoring in the fabric using Vallejo 941 brown.

I placed the masking tape strips over the wing ribs, then lightly airbrushed a version of the base colour, lightened with a touch of XF-2 Flat White which enhanced the relief of the wing ribs. On the crosses, I used dark grey over the black sections and light grey over the white areas.

Painting process of the crosses on the wings. I decided to paint these because they would be weathered by using some masking tape stripes that could damage the decals.

Final appearance of the wing, with all the fading processes. Brown shading was created with very diluted Vallejo acrylics (applied by brush) and scratches were made with 975 Green to simulate some wear that exposed the original green upper camouflage of the plane, before it was re-painted in desert colours.

Final fitting of the engine. To make a strong bond, small drops of Tamiya Extra Thin Cement were applied, taking care not to damage the surrounding paintwork..

irst class in the IMSA GTX and fourth overall in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1982 behind the factory Porsche armada, the 'Moby Dick' of the Fitzpatrick Racing Team was lead by two British drivers, John Fitzpatrick and David Hobbs. The car completed a fantastic year for Porsche since the first three places in the premier class were taken by three Porsche 956s. This class performance deserved recognition in model kit form and French artisan producer 'Renaissance' duly obliged with two transkits; a sheet of decals that included resin parts (TK24/300) and a sheet of photo-etched parts (TK24/299). I used both of these sets on Tamiya's kit of the Martini Porsche 935-78 Turbo (24318). There are many changes to be made and the modeller should have good references to hand before embarking on the adventure.

The Renaissance decals and photo-etched set used by the author to transform the Tamiya kit.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, WITH THE RIGHT REFS

Fortunately, with the internet, anything is possible and if you look closely you can find many interesting photos for model references. Specialised forums can also be a source of valuable information. After some extensive research, I had to consider making changes to the instructions because in

this kind of project, you can forget the original assembly sequence! I initially dealt with the transformation of the chassis, constantly checking its fit to the body. The painting of the latter will, for once, be the last step. To see all the work done in the interior of the car, both doors would be presented in the open position.

Not much will be left of the original chassis; just the bits that correspond to the 1982 machine.

The resin parts (doors, rear wheels and inserts part of the body) are provided with Renaissance decal set.

CHASSIS

The first step was to remove unwanted ejector-pin marks using sanding pads. The chassis of the Tamiya kit does not match the 1982 version since it depicts the 1978 car, so the missing elements were created using plastic card. It's important to frequently measure the progress of the chassis, checking its fit within the

Plastic card is required to alter the chassis. The rear part of the rollcage from the Tamiya kit was used without modification.

The inner faces of the doors were made using a cutter cut plastic card. Gaps were filled with putty.

body, which is essential to avoid unpleasant surprises later on. The moulded 'tubular' central structure was created from 1mm diameter brass rod, soldered together, although cyanoacrylate glue could also be used for those who are not equipped for, or experienced in soldering. I pushed myself a little further by making up the

U

An undesirable opening was blocked with a plastic card blanking plate.

The front portion of the rollcage was remade in 1.5mm aluminium tubing and secured with superglue.

control system for the anti-roll bar. Using thin brass rod, the photo-etched parts provided by Renaissance and a little inspiration, I arrived at an interesting result. If you take your time, nothing is impossible! Many aftermarket brands are now providing accessories to push the detail of our models. I found extinguishers, miniature switches, fine wire and more, all very useful to achieve a detailed conversion project. The seat is the standard kit part, painted with 'Tenco Proto' black (aerosol) that can create an interesting texture on the surfaces it's applied to. You have to play with the spraying distance to accentuate the textured effect, in this case, a not inconsiderable one metre from the model's surface. The harness comes from 'Tuner Model Manufactory' and the loops are present on the photo-etched sheet by Renaissance. The dashboard is significantly different to the 1978 version; we must keep the central instrument binnacle from the Tamiya kit moulding and attach it to a simple aluminium rod. The dials were faced with small photo-etched parts from Axel'R. The electronic housings were made from plastic card and Top Studio connectors were added and cabled-up using 0.2mm wire. It only remained to fix all the parts in their places on the chassis and also make sure everything fitted properly once the body was on.

During the modification of the chassis, the author regularly checked the fit of the bodywork.

Doors will be installed open. They were attached with small brass rods.

The front bumper was re-shaped with putty. The grille was adjusted to fit.

The joints around the resin elements at the back of the body were filled with Tamiya putty and sanded flush.

Renaissance made a small error with the size of the rear wing’s end-plates, an error since corrected. The author re-made these parts with the help of a home-made pattern.

BODY MODIFICATIONS

Many changes are necessary before even considering the painting. The front part was re-contoured using a two-part body putty, then the photo-etched grille was adjusted to fit. The original doors were cut out using a Tamiya engraving tool, quite easy so long as you cut very careful and accurately. The rear plate of the original body was cut away using a Swann-Morton scalpel. To restore the thickness of the door jams in the B-pillars, I used sections of plastic card, fixed in place with cyanoacrylate for strength and immediate bonding. I also used plastic card to create the inner panels for

16 November 2014 TMMI 229

p 14-19 Porsche935 229MN.indd 16

The end-plates were cut from an aluminium sheet of 0.3mm. The result was satisfactory and there was no need to paint them.

The kit’s rear wing struts are too thick and so were re-made from 0.2mm brass and soldered.

To create the tubular inner structure, brass rod of The frame takes shape... 1mm diameter was used. The sections were soldered but cyanoacrylate glue would also do the trick.

24/09/2014 16:44

At each step, check that everything fits properly to avoid unpleasant surprises...

For the painting of the body’s light blue portions, the author made a set of mask stickers from a scan of the Renaissance decal set.

A layer of two-part primer was sprayed with an airbrush, creating a resistant layer. Tamiya white primer is also ideal for this step. Then, the body was painted basic matt white.

Masks were applied and the Gulf Blue was sprayed After masking again, the Zero Paints Signal Blue in thin layers with an airbrush. (RAL5005, custom-mixed) was applied. The paints dry with matt finishes.

With the three colours on, the bodyshell could be varnished.

We won't use much of the original Tamiya dashboard.

We only keep this part, fixed to an aluminium rod.

Parts in their drying phase on the handy Tamiya stand (74522) which holds small alligator clips that support the parts to be painted.

Electronic packages were created and wired-up with fine 0.2mm wire.

the resin doors that come with the Renaissance set (TK24/300). The joints were improved by using body putty and a considerable amount of sanding. The rear wing end-plates supplied in the Renaissance photo-etched set were too small, so I had to make new ones myself. After creating a pattern on the computer, I cut them out of aluminium foil with a good pair of scissors. There was no need to paint them because they were bare aluminium on the real car. I made Renaissance aware of this error and new photo-etched sets produced will now have these parts at the right size, a good response from the company! The rear wing struts were a little too thick, so they were remade in brass sheet and glued to the body before painting.

BODY PAINTING

To find surface defects, the body received a layer of 'Glasurit' two-component primer. Luckily, I only found a few flaws and they were filled with Tamiya Putty. The body was then given a wet sanding with 1000 grit sandpaper before receiving a second coat of primer. The large, light blue decals on the Renaissance sheet left me a little perplexed, given the complex curves of the bodywork, so I took the initiative to apply this colour at the painting stage. The body initially received two coats of matt white (Glasurit, but you can use your favourite brand of paint). To delineate the light blue, the decal sheet was scanned and printed out onto a sheet of Tamiya Masking Sticker Sheet (87129) using a traditional inkjet printer.

U

The seat was painted with aerosol paint called 'Tenco Proto' which creates a very realistic vinyl fabric texture. To obtain this result, it was sprayed at a substantial distance of around one meter.

Small connectors from Top Studio were used to connect the wire to the electronic enclosures.

'Autoflug' harnesses from T2M, threaded through the Renaissance photo-etched hardware; the result is impressive.

All that was needed was to cut out the masks with scissors and position them on the body. Two layers of Zero Paints' Gulf Blue (ZP-1103) were sprayed with an airbrush and the body was then re-masked to paint the dark Signal Blue (RAL5005, custom-mixed) again from Zero Paints (www.hiroboy.com). After unmasking, it was necessary to apply a layer of polyurethane varnish before applying the decals, which was done without any major problems. The use of decal softener is however

recommended. A final layer of varnish was sprayed to seal in the markings. Following this, the body was subjected to light sanding using 8,000 and 12,000 3M sandpaper and then a rub-down with 3M polish gave the final shine to the paint finish.

FINAL STAGES

The wheels were painted gloss black then given a light coat of Alclad II Chrome. The conical inserts were then cemented in place and the decals applied and varnished. The tyre treads were buffed

with medium grit sandpaper and then mounted on the rims. The headlining was painted satin black via airbrush after masking off the outer body areas. The windows were fixed with white adhesive (PVA) and the body was placed on the chassis, fixed to the frame using two-part epoxy glue. The photo-etched window frames were attached to acetate sheet with 3M spray-adhesive, then carefully cut out with scissors. The rear wing was glued with epoxy, along with the many small photo-etched

accessories; windscreen wipers, body clips etc. So, the model was complete, a success after many hours of work. Both Renaissance transkits were of high quality, comprehensive and well documented and are highly recommended. Of course, a less experienced modeller could build this model without redoing the entire chassis, not worrying too much about the appearance of the final model, but I hope I have given you some inspiration to embark on a project of this complexity! â—?

Here is the result; a satisfyingly complex looking sub-structure.

Overall view of the completed chassis as it awaits the body. Inside, the author added a fire extinguisher set, which look very realistic.

The moulded-in window rubbers were masked off, then airbrushed satin black. The windows were masked up in order to paint the frame edges in satin black. This step is essential for a tidy outcome without scruffy edges.

The window panes were fixed with white (PVA) glue, then the body was permanently mounted to the frame using two-component epoxy glue. The photo-etched window frames of the doors were glued onto the acetate film using 3M spray glue. The film was then cut out with scissors, following the contour of photo-etched parts.

The rear wing was fitted without problems. Small rivets from Top Studio were added to the end-plates for further realism.

T

he Autocar U-7144T Tractor, 4-ton, 4x4 (G-510), to give it its full name, was a WW2 American truck, produced in prolific numbers for the US Army. The design was also produced by White as the Model 444T (G-691) and was identical as to the Autocar vehicle. This four-wheel

drive, five-ton tractor was used in combination with various trailers for transporting supplies over long distances and were deployed to all theatres of operation in World War Two, from Burma in the east to Europe in the west, as part of the famous ‘Red Ball Express’. Approximately

2,750 of the White and 11,000 of the Autocar were made, both powered by the Hercules RXC 529 cu. in six-cylinder petrol engine. These photos were taken in 2013 at the War and Peace Revival show in Kent, UK and depict an immaculately restored example of a US Army U-7144T.

DES Kit (kit 35083; deskit. online.fr) offer an excellent 1:35 resin kit of the U-7144T and with the ever-expanding range from Hobbyboss and others, there’s a good chance this truck will be available as an injection-moulded plastic kit at some point in the future too. Let’s hope! ●

Close-up view of the ‘fifth-wheel’ and its cast base-plate. The rear-facing tips of the device rest on pressed sheet-steel ‘ramps’ when not in use, to allow the coupling device of the trailer to slide into place. The thick grease will be fun challenge for modellers to reproduce.

The fifth-wheel ramps can be seen more clearly here. Note the ‘U’ channel cross-section of the chassis members and the bolted construction of the vehicle’s frame.

p 24 Firefly Pre 229MN.indd 24

s we know, Tamiya do release selected kits from other manufacturers from time to time and this one is particularly inspired. It’s the 2006 Asuka Model (formerly Tasca) kit of the British Sherman VC Firefly, widely acknowledged to be the best 1:35 model of this improvised tank-killer currently available. The mouldings have a distinct ‘Tamiya feel’ about them and if you’re a fan of Tamiya armour kits you’ll feel quite at home here, albeit with an added level of highly competent complexity. The surface detail is sublime, with extremely subtle and in-scale welding seams, foundry marks and cast steel texture in all the right places and if you love your Shermans, you’ll relish the articulated, part-by-part suspension bogies, near perfect replicas of the real thing. Of course, if you just want a quick build, these sub-assemblies will slow you down, but in compensation, the result is potentially magnificent. Another difference you’ll notice is the lower hull. Asuka Model prefer their hulls to build up from individual panels, which eliminates the need for mould release angles that would be present in a one-piece ‘tub’, but again, will require an extra investment in time to assemble, but modelling

isn’t all about getting it done quickly is it? Unless you’re building magazine review models of course... The hull panels exhibit some tidy detail on their visible surfaces, the main reason the panels are formed from discrete facets. The suspension bogie locations are crisply detailed as are the hull belly access panels. Yet another improvement is the inclusion of hull-overhang filler plates. Usually missing from Sherman kits. These plates form ‘floors’ for the overhangs and prevent any potential ‘show-through’ from the turret hatch to the tracks’ upper runs. As a bonus, Tamiya have thrown in the excellent 1998 set of British Infantry (five figures) plus their personal kit and weapons, which add a special touch to the release. Finally, as the real treat, this kit is significantly cheaper than the original release, depending on where you buy it. What’s not to love? ● MN MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . A highly detailed kit with some lovely touches of sophisticated complexity; Tamiya’s figures are a real bonus, plus an encouraging price point.

Detail view of the 17pdr’s mantlet and rotor shield.

All seems present and correct; the upper hull is extremely accurate.

The commander figure came with the original kit and is of top quality.

Two styles of muzzle brake are provided, both moulded in two halves.

Gun barrel is split lengthways; with careful cementing it will look perfect.

The smallest details are perfectly moulded and need handling with care.

MODELLING PROJECTS AIR CRASH SCENE

dIORAMA IDEAS... This new series of pages for TMMI takes a look at some well known wartime photos, providing inspiration for dioramas and modelling projects. To get started, let's examine this dramatic scene from post D-Day Normandy...

H

ere we see a USAAF A P-47 Thunderbolt, blazing on an Allied ALG (Advanced Ground Landing) runway, somewhere in Normandy after D-Day. The runway is made from 'SMT' or Square Mesh Track, a system of welded steel wire laid as expedient landing strips in combat zones. It would seem that the aircraft crashed on take-off as it still has its underwing load of 20lb M41 fragmentation bombs which would

most likely have been jettisoned by the pilot if this were a landing incident. We can see several elements that would be needed to realistically recreate this scene in scale model form, notably the bent-back propeller blades, deformed airframe panels and the flat tyre, as well as the fire-retardant foam and soot from the fire of course. A dramatic scene for sure, and it seems that the pilot escaped safely. â—?

In model form In 1:48, you could use Tamiya's P-47D Thunderbolt bubbletop (61090) or Razorback (61086) plus some figures, perhaps converted from Tamiya 1:48 figures sets. www.hobbyco.net

T

he Toyota Model AB Phaeton is certainly not one of the company’s better known vehicles new or old, but it has its place in Japanese automotive history. The car was first exhibited in 1936 in Tokyo; the AB model was the open-topped (phaeton) version of the Toyota Model AA, and featured a 3.4 litre straight-six engine, leaf-spring suspension and hydraulic drum-brakes. 353 examples of the car were built by Toyota and most of them ended up in the hands of the Imperial Japanese military as staff cars, which is why Tamiya have created this new kit in 1:35. The model is an all-new tooling and it strikes a nice balance between complexity and ease of construction; there isn’t a full engine or openable doors/bonnet, which makes assembly much easier, but there is a full chassis with individual leaf springs, axles, drive-shafts and lower engine (sump, gearbox) detail. The option to display the canvas roof in the up or down position and all the relevant parts are rendered with an extremely convincing, crumpled and folded fabric texture. The seats are beautifully moulded with all the plump, well upholstered style of a 1930s car and the cabin floor

sports a very fine texture that could suggest the presence of carpet. One criticism sometimes aimed at 1:35 car kits is the lack of foot-pedals, but not so here; we have individually moulded accelerator, brake and clutch pedals, plus gear lever and hand-brake, all to scale. The front wheels are moulded in the straight-ahead position which is unfortunate, but the axles can easily be bent for a more dynamic appearance. Finally, we are provided with a seated driver figure and he is very well sculpted, much better than usual. Overall then, this is very finely produced kit of a rare classic that has some military usage to keep things interesting. A 1:48 version would also be very welcome, to place alongside a collection of Zero fighters and others. Please note, this is a pre-production kit. The production models will be moulded in sand-coloured polystyrene. ● MN MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .IM, PC, WS Availability: Good model shops everywhere www.hobbyco.net TMMI’S OPINION? KIT PREVIEW EDUARD 1:48 BF109G ROYAL CLASS ● KIT NO.R0009

BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT

Eduard have produced another of their legendary 'Royal Class' special editions, this time, for their recent 1:48 Bf109G. Let's pop the lid and see what collectable goodies are in the box....

M

uch has been written and discussed about Eduard's recent 1:48 kit of the Messerschmitt Bf109G-6 (full-build review in TMMI 225). It’s now widely agreed that it is a little oversized for true 1:48, but as a stand-alone model of this most famous of German fighter aircraft, it makes a finely detailed and accurately-profiled replica and looks superb once painted, decalled and weathered. Maybe just display it near your other '109 models but not directly alongside them...

BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT

Eduard's Royal Class releases have become known for the interesting and highly original extras included in the box and this latest one is no exception. Along with the kit sprues, box of resin parts, photo-etched upgrades and decals to create two complete Bf109G models, we find a rather nicely made beer glass emblazoned with an outline of a Bf109G and the JG52 shield surrounded by a garland of hops; very original. Eduard have even gone to the extent of providing a beer mat too!

A REAL PIECE OF THE ACTION Along with these Light-hearted extras, there's a more poignant reminder of the history behind one of the models depicted inside the kit box. It's a original fragment from the shattered airframe of Bf109G-14 'Black 4' flown by Lt. Hans-Helmut Linck and shot down over the Czech Republic on September 11th 1944, which, at the time this review was written, was exactly seventy years ago. The corroded aluminium fragment is mounted on a sturdy wooden base with a brass nameplate and makes an elegant modelling room display item to go with your other memorabilia.●MN MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:48 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . IM, PE, R, PCM, WS Availability: www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk www.hannants.co.uk www.lsamodels.co.uk TMMI’S OPINION? A slightly flawed kit, but even so, still a remarkable replica of this infamous fighter. The Royal Class collectables just make it even more interesting...

Multiple airframe sprues are provided, from which the correct combination of parts are plucked to build two Bf109Gs.

The massive decal sheet with its multiple options.

Airframe surface detail is exquisite.

The wing has a little too much span but looks the part and fits together extremely well.

heet ons.

Resin castings, photo-etched brass and pre-cut canopy masks all come as standard in the Royal Class box; very impressive indeed.

Just an idea of the many markings on offer in this release!

The star of this Royal Class production is a fragment of a real Bf109G-14 that was shot down over the then Czechoslovakia in September, 1944.

Another appealing bonus is this high quality ‘Gustav’ beer glass and accompanying beer mat!

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE TAMIYA 1:35 B1 BIS GERMAN ARMY PANZERKAMPFWAGEN B2 740(F) ● KIT NO.35287

BEUTEPANZER CHAR B1

Manuel Reinher builds a classic Tamiya kit – the Char B1 bis 'German Army' – and finishes it with a heavily worn winter whitewash finish

W

ow, what a misplaced beast! This was my first thought when I stumbled across a picture of a whitewashed Beutepanzer in the Trackstory B1 bis

book. With its bulky riveted hull and the old-fashioned running gear it almost looked like it was straight from WW1. The combination of the whitewash and 'lost somewhere on the eastern

front' appearance, it became the perfect inspiration for my next project. The Char B1 was a nasty surprise for the German Panzertruppen in the Battle of France. Its 75mm main

gun could easily penetrate every German tank on the battlefield and the 60mm frontal armour was at least three times as thick as that of a Panzer IV. During the Invasion of France a

high amount of Char B1s fell into German hands. These beutepanzers (beute; swag or booty) received few modifications and took part in action from the Channel Islands to the Eastern front. As a couple of weeks of research didn't provide me with further information about my specific vehicle, I

decided to use photos as a loose reference and started the construction.

THE BUILD

As starting point I used the B1 bis German Army kit from Tamiya (35287). Much has been said about this kit, so to keep it short: it's fantastic! Although a nice

kit out of the box, I also used PE parts from Lion Roar (LE35075) and Armorscale (B35-K01) to enhance the level of detail. Archer Surface Details were used to add casting numbers to several parts of the kit. Last but not least I added tracks from Friulmodel (ATL-88). While studying reference

pictures I also decided to add some field modifications like additional storage boxes and fuel canisters, both seen in many wartime photos. Beside the PE parts, I added missing bolts, reworked the exhaust covers with thin metal foil and detailed the lifting jacks to store them at the back of the vehicle.

The author chose to store the huge jacks on the vehicle's back plate. Although the Tamiya tracks are superb, they were swapped them for Friulmodel tracks.

The completed build ready to receive some colour. You can see the added bolts (in black) along the upper/inner edge of the side panel; Tamiya missed this detail.

A back shot of the completed build. The author added all the stowage to get a feel for the final layout. The ladder got damaged and the author says he was too lazy to build a new one!

The additional fuel canister storage was constructed according to reference pictures. As you can see this would really limit the traverse of the turret. In this shot you can also see some of the added cast markings using Archer dry transfers.

A dark brown base colour was mixed using Tamiya paints. The author applied the colour using some drops of Clear X-22 and thinned with them Tamiya lacquer thinner. This mixture provides a smooth paint job.

BASE PAINTING V THE After finishing the

construction phase I washed the model carefully in soapy water to get rid of dust and any nasty fingerprints. Once dry, I mixed Tamiya X-1 Black and XF-64 Red Brown to a dark brown colour. This together with Tamiya X-22 Clear was then thinned with Tamiya lacquer thinner and sprayed a base coat on the model. I didn't prime the model as Tamiya paints thinned with lacquer thinner created similar results. Once dry, the model received two thin coats of hairspray straight from the can. A few minutes later I mixed a dark grey base colour using Tamiya XF-17 Sea Blue, XF-23 Light Blue and XF-24 Dark Grey. As always, I added a few drops of X-22 Clear to create a smooth paint-job. This time I thinned the paint with tap water and applied an even coat on the model. I didn't highlight the dark grey as the whitewash will cover most of the vehicle's hull. After ten minutes I started to work the surface with an old brush and tap water to create a scored and chipped effect. For the fine lines I used a sharpened toothpick to remove the dark grey and reveal the black-brown colour below. I didn't put that much attention to this work as most of the chips won’t be seen but this would be a good starting point for further weathering. To protect this first step, the model received a layer of satin varnish mixed with Tamiya Clear and Tamiya X-21 Flat Base. Once dry the decals (Balkenkreuz Mix #1, AR49011) were applied. These decals are dry transfers from Archer and a real joy to work with.

Two thin coats of hairspray straight from the can formed the base for the first hairspray ‘chipping layer’.

Old brushes and sharp toothpicks were used to create the different chipping effects. This step creates a good starting point for the further weathering.

The colours used to create a blue-grey base shade; XF-24 Dark Grey, XF-17 Sea Blue, XF-23 Light Blue, X-22 Clear. This was applied a few minutes after the hairspray treatment. For the ease of removing the paint the author thinned the mixture with tap water.

WHITEWASH; BRINGING V THE THE SURFACE TO LIFE The decals were applied and sealed with a layer of Tamiya X-22 Clear. After that, another layer of hairspray created the foundation for the whitewash.

Tamiya XF-2 thinned with water was airbrushed over the model. After a few minutes the author started to 'chip' the colour, keep the chips as small as possible and taking time to consider where the scoring would appear.

The exhaust system was painted with the beautiful rust set from Lifecolor before the whitewash was applied.

The model received another two coats of hairspray and a few minutes later Tamiya XF-2 Flat White – thinned with tap water – was applied in thin layers. Once dry I worked my way through the surface using old brushes and sharp tools to create a worn whitewash effect. Tamiya X-22 Clear was used to seal the previous steps and I was then ready to start working with Humbrol colours. Using Humbrol 170 Brown Bess I started to apply a pin wash around details. Humbrol 34 Matt White was used to enhance the look of the whitewash. The goal was to give the whole surface more depth and bring out all the nice details. After the first passes with Humbrol colours, I switched brushes and started to paint some paint chips using Vallejo acrylics that matched the base colour. I tried to keep the chips as small as possible, always keeping in mind where scratches and wear would appear. I worked my way from surface to surface, switching between Humbrols and acrylic paint until I was satisfied. My reference image showed a rather clean vehicle but I wanted to depict some nice wet mud effects. I wanted to maximize the contrast between the white surfaces

Sanding and smoothing kit parts is a regular task for scale modellers and it’s wise to have a consistent, high quality system to get good results. UMP offer a range of finishing products and these two-sided foam backed sanders are superb. The green side is a fine grade grit and the white is a polisher to really shine up your pre-paint plastic.

Humbrol colours were used to enhance the details and to bring more depth into the faded whitewash. This process was combined with the use of Acrylics to build up the chipping effects.

The weathering was carried over to the top surface. The next was to apply pigments from Mig Productions to build up the mud.

and the wet almost black dirt. Using pigments from Mig Productions I built up the mud, fixing it in place with Tamiya thinner and light passes with Humbrol 35 Gloss Varnish. I used the gloss varnish also as a localised colour-wash to enhance the wet look. Other details like the huge exhaust system were treated with the same manner. Instead of Vallejo acrylics I used the excellent rust set from Lifecolor.

THE FIGURES

With this project I wanted to tackle another big challenge for me: Figures. I modified the figures from Russian producer 'Tank' by replacing their heads with the fantastic items from the Hornet range. They were painted with Vallejo acrylics and as these are my first figures I was really satisfied how they turned out.

Casting quality is sublime and the sculpting is natural and full of character. With First World War modelling subjects very much in people's minds, these figures are the ideal way to express an interest in the subject, in miniature form. Also new from Tommy's War are two busts in 1:10 representing a Corporal of the East African Mounted Rifles 1915 and a Captain of the 2nd Bn South Wales Borderers, 1914. O

ver the last few years the modelling world has seen the emergence of a number of new companies from the Far East, who have in turn released some very fine kits that have more than rivalled those more established brands in terms of quality, accuracy and originality. Amongst those new companies, one is standing above the others with releases that are both original and very high quality. That company is MENG. Having dipped their toe in the water with some tentative WWII releases, MENG seem to be concentrating much of their effort in the creation of modern vehicles. Amongst these new kits we have seen such delights as the

massive D9 Dobi bulldozer, T-90, the T-90 ‘Terminator’, Leopard 1A3/4 and perhaps most impressive of all, the Panzerhaubitze 2000. Latest to find its way onto our workbench is the M3A3 Bradley CFV, the second of this family of vehicles to see the light of day from MENG. Initially released as the infantry-carrying ‘3A2 with a complete interior, this new kit sees a different approach, offering a ‘curbside’ model that both simplifies the construction and keeps the cost of purchase down to a more manageable level. It’s a philosophy that we wholeheartedly approve of. But enough of the platitudes, let’s take a closer look at what the kit offers the modeller.

The upper and lower hulls are moulded in two large sections, accuracy, fit and detail being exemplary.

U

As with other MENG releases, this kit features individual torsion bars that allow a degree of movement for the diorama builders amongst you. The downside to this inclusion is a fairly fragile suspension, care being needed to reduce the chance of damage. The suspension dampers are supplied in both plastic and metal, tiny tubes allowing prototypical movement. These are very fiddly to assemble, needing an extra pair of hands and a dose of patience unnecessary for the rest of the kit.

The rear ramp features a separate access door, which is a neat improvement over Tamiya’s venerable offering and its solid door. Note the very impressive tow cable and integral clamps.

The road wheels are stunning, separate tyres allowing the depiction of the overlapping rims found on the real items. Poly caps, trapped between the two wheel halves allow he wheels to not only rotate(!), but also be removed for painting.

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE MENG 1:35 M3A3 BRADLEY CFV WITH BUSK III ● KIT NO.SS-006

The individual torsion bars are held at the correct angle thanks to these nifty peg and socket joints, a drop of Tamiya Extra Thin Cement being all that is required to hold them in place.

The torsion bars and suspension dampers are assembled and in place. Though the dampers are a mix of metal and plastic, it was found that by fixing all of the parts firmly in place with liquid glue, the metal parts would stay in place without the need to use another adhesive such as Cyanoacrylate.

The inherent problem with any kit that features individual torsion bars is getting all of the wheels to touch the ground at the same time. In order to ensure that they would be aligned, a small wooden base was rested on top of the hull as the glue set, the completed hull being left overnight to dry out fully.

It’s never a surprise to see photo-etched details being supplied in a kit and so seeing these was as welcome as it was unsurprising. The detail is excellent and the finesse top drawer, everything fitting in place perfectly with absolutely no need for additional adjustment, the tiny triangular brackets that are used to point the reactive armour blocks around the turret, being particularly impressive in this regard.

With construction proceeding apace, the larger components could be test-fit to see how everything would line up. As mentioned earlier, the tolerance between the components was very tight, a brush full of liquid glue being more than enough to create perfect joints. It was now time to tackle the interior…

Lining the lower hull with its floor panels, additional armour and superficial engine bay details, helps the modeller warm up for the more complex work to come. The instructions suggest painting the components individually, but I found that it would be easier to build large assemblies, apply an overall coat of paint and then pick out the details in situ.

Though not visible in this shot, the floor of the fighting compartment is decorated with some wonderfully refined treadplate, the armour that lines the walls, with equally delicate rivets and retaining bolts. Note the stowage racks – empty now, but soon to be filled up with meal boxes and kit.

THE BOX V IN As already mentioned,

MENG have already released an M3A2 BUSK (Bradley Urban Survivability Kit) with a full interior, to a wave of positivity from the general modelling population and the press who have almost universally praised the kit’s levels of detail, accuracy and features. Many of those who have fond memories of the Tamiya Bradley in its many incarnations have been looking for a new kit to satisfy our cravings, little realising that not only would that kit come from a relative new-comer, when it did arrive, the results would be so spectacular. So, with the M3A2 in the market, MENG to the sensible decision to release

the newer Alpha-3 variant complete with reworked rear hull and fighting compartment and increased TOW stowage. They then released a separate box containing a full interior, should those keen to build the complete package – as

Some of that amazing etched detail in place on the two large engine vents. These are so fine that they need extreme care to remove from their fret, thin superglue applied with a curved no.10 blade, being used to fix them in place.

In order to build this version of the Bradley, the periscopes that are found on the upper surfaces of the rear hull need to be removed both from the outer and inner surfaces. Once done, the interior surfaces of the roof can be lined with additional armour. The turret has also been worked on here, plenty of scope for additional detail being apparent in this shot.

seen here – could do so, or if they wanted a simpler model, just build what was supplied and then button-up all of the hatches and rear ramp. This is a neat option and one that offers a high degree of flexibility; for instance, you could build two

The side skirts are fully detailed with all of the add-on armour brackets moulded in situ. This allows a further degree of flexibility, the modeller being able to either fix the distinctive blocks in place, or leave the racks empty.

Bradleys, using the interior from the additional set in one and then the engine bay in another – you don’t have to use everything in one go! In this case we chose to combine the complete interior with the basic M3A3 to create a highly detailed

The turret is festooned in reactive armour block, held in place with delicate etched-brass mounts. Care is needed when assembling these to ensure that the mounts are correctly positioned and held firm.

model, additional details and accessories being used to both add to the complex From the off it is very apparent that this is a highly detailed kit that has taken care to create. The quality of the plastic parts, the logical breakdown, detail and accuracy are all top drawer. Indeed, as I was building this kit – thanks in no small way to the colour of the plastic! – I was reminded of the way Tamiya’s kits fall together, everything fitting perfectly will little, if any need, for further adjustment. To all intents and purposes, this kit falls together. Working your way through the instructions and kit parts prior to assembly, the modeller is presented with a kit that is broken down into very easy to navigate steps, working their way through the construction of the running gear, chassis, upper hull and turret. Though daunting thanks to the number of parts, the designers have ensured that each individual piece is provided almost ready to use, with little in any need for additional clean up. There are no knock-out pins to remove and seams, where present and so fine, that a brush over with liquid cement is almost all that is needed to render them invisible. Detail is astonishing. From the ground up you will find as comprehensively detailed a model as you will find anywhere. The Bradley is certainly a complex vehicle and that complexity is captured well with all shapes and features rendered with aplomb. In order to capture the Bradley’s look at keep the construction as easy as possible, MENG supply large upper and lower hull sections that combine with a rear plate to create the basis of the hull. Onto this the model applies individual armour plates that cover the facetted surfaces of both the upper hull and turret, each one fitting perfect in place thanks to carefully designed holes, slots and pins that line everything up. These plates are then detailed with a myriad of finer details, tools, brackets, lifting eyes, periscopes (moulded in clear plastic), hatches, doors and those very impressive BUSK armoured shields that hang

The model is almost completely assembled and even in this state – sans stowage – looks very impressive indeed. The large TV camera fixed to the side of the turret, the TOW launcher, engine access door and drivers hatch are all fitted ‘dry’ at this stage, all being painted separately and fixed in place at the end of the project.

from the side skirts. You just can’t help but smile at the detail and the fit of these parts, only a little opening up of some of the smaller holes being needed to ensure every fit perfectly.

NON-SLIP TEXTURE?

Initially I was concerned that the vehicle's distinctive anti-slip coating would be missing. This needed to be added to the Takom MEXAS Leopard kit and I was concerned it would need to be applied here too; I needn’t have worried. All of the upper surfaces feature delicately rendered anti-slip texture that only become fully apparent under paint. You may decide that it is rather too fine and will choose to accentuate it a little more with a suitably textured additive, but in this case it was left alone, its appearance look perfectly fine to us! Those modellers who may have built the Tamiya Bradley, will be pleased to see certain improvements present in this kit, beginning as you may imagine with the suspension and running gear. As with the Leopard A3/4, this kit features a working suspension, individual torsion bars allowing a degree of movement that works alongside the poly-capped wheels and individual tracks links to create an articulated running gear. This is great if you want to display your model on uneven ground, not so good if you are keen on creating a solid base for your model. The torsion bars you see, are rather delicate and need little in the way of persuasion to distort. That said, the results are almost prototypically scaled and thanks to the carefully designed wheels with their inset hubs (possible thanks to separate tyres) and superb tracks, look stunning once assembled, painted and weathered. Along with the major components, the kit includes such pleasures as etched vent screens, a full suite of clear optical devices, light lenses, open or closed hatches and fully moveable gun, TOW launcher and TV sight housing. Detail on all of these items – as with the rest of the kit – is superb and the fit of parts, exemplary.

U

With the external construction complete, work can be carried out inside the vehicle. In order to simplify the identification of the pieces they are colour-coded: green for the interior, grey for the engine bay and ancillary details.

Though there are a large number of pieces, creating subassemblies that all have to line up, fit is such that they do so with ease, everything fitting together perfectly to create a wonderfully detailed interior.

Though happy with the supplied features, a little extra detail was deemed worthwhile so some cables and wires were added. A word of warning though: don’t go overboard as very little is visible on the completed model – only add what can be seen!

A neat detail that I wanted to add were the braided cables. These were made using lengths of lead wire slipped inside very fine springs found in the spares’ box. Painted and weathered, they look very effective!

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY VEHICLE MENG 1:35 M3A3 BRADLEY CFV WITH BUSK III ● KIT NO.SS-006

DECORATING V INTERIOR As MENG’s M3A3 is supplied

without an interior, they have as mentioned, created a separate kit of parts that will allow the modeller the opportunity to build a complete interior including fighting compartment, driver’s station, engine bay and turret interior. All of the parts are designed specifically for this kit and so feature the additional TOW ready rounds that typifies this variant, as well as additional internal plates that cover over the removed periscopes from the rear hull roof. There is no getting away from it, this is a very involved add-on that all-but doubles the amount of time needed to build and paint this kit. Though construction is far for difficult, a degree of planning will be needed to ensure that everything is built and accessible to paint and though you will find that certain areas are almost invisible on the completed model and thus not in need of a complete run of painting

The interior of the turret is busy, plenty of the equipment found inside the real turret being With the engine, gearbox and driver’s bulkhead found in the kit. Additional removed, the generic look of my detailing cables were added before becomes apparent! Though not going anywhere, painting it all in Sea Foam once painted and all other detailed reinstalled, Green with black boxes, grey the effect will be quite realistic, proving that cables, pale grey switches and ‘gizmology’ really does work! other smaller features.

Above; the interior was painted with several layers of Tamiya XF-21, which is a good match for the Sea Foam Green finish. A little highlighting with the addition of some white into the mix preceded washes with Raw Umber and black oil paints and then detail painting with Vallejo acrylics and Humbrol enamels. Left; though a dominant feature of the engine bay, the radiator was not fully painted, as it is invisible inside the completed model. The cables were painted to represent rubber hosing, Humbrol 85 Satin Black, lightened with 32 Dark Grey. Note the detail inside the driver’s compartment, the weathered olive seat cushion and the brass bolts that line the upper and lower edges of the additional armour.

Above; there is no getting away from the fact that an engine bay is a filthy environment. This was recreated by overspraying the surfaces with a very thin mix of Humbrol Matt Black and Raw Umber oils thinned with white spirit, excess being worked away with a flat brush and cotton buds dampened with more white spirit. The splashes and stains could then be added by flicking the wash over the model, care not being taken during this stage!

Left; the dark green TOW stowage helps break up the pale green fighting compartment, as does the blue and white cooling box, gloss red compressed gas bottles and the dark grey treadplate panels, here, further weathered with pigments. Well-printed stencil decals add the finishing touch.

Left; though empty at the moment, the fighting compartment was further embellished with additional items of Above; the driver’s bulkhead and turret basket look great once stowage. The crew seat was painted assembled and painted, the myriad warning stencils and placards Sky and then the seat cushions finished adding immeasurably to their appearance. Weathering was limited to in Vallejo 889 US Army Olive Drab, the delicate application of AK Interactive Dark Wash, some pigments highlighted with 881 Yellow Green. and detail painting. Reference to full-sized shots revealed little chipping, so that was kept to a minimum, only being added to edges with a sponge-applied layer of Vallejo 150 German Camouflage Black Brown.

The engine block and gear box are wonderfully detailed. Each was primed with Tamiya Satin Black and then oversprayed with Alclad II Dark Aluminium. The engine block was left as it was, the gear box being further weathered with oil paint washes, AK Dark Wash, Oil Stain and Engine Grime. Details were picked out with enamels and acrylics.

With the upper hull in place, the amount of detail that can be seen becomes readily apparent! Also noteworthy in this shot is how once painted, those generic details seen earlier blend in with the kit parts to create a realistically busy looking engine bay.

The warning decals on the wall of the driver’s compartment look amazing in this shot. In order to simplify the masking of the open compartments, their surroundings were airbrushed in the camouflage colour before everything was glued together, roughly applied tape, sponge and kitchen towel, being enough to protect the interior surfaces.

The kit supplies a soft plastic cover for the mantlet but this was missing from my kit, so was replaced with a sheet made from thinly-rolled Green Stuff. Green Stuff and Magic Sculp are available from Sylmasta; www.sylmasta.com

You can’t have a stowage bin without stowage, so the one fixed to the back of the turret was filled with ammo boxes, jerrycan, water box sourced from the spares box, plus Green Stuff rags and tarpaulin sheets.

Though I could have used off the shelf stowage, it never looks a part of the model to me, so the only option was to sculpt my own. Here you can see one of the large kit bags that has been made using Magic Sculp, shaped with rubber sculpting tools and talcum powder.

The stowage on the left hand rear hull is a little more involved, some spare track links from the kit, a tow-bar from Dragon’s M1A1 and another Magic Sculp bag being brought together to fill this part of the model. A jerrycan from Real Models’ MEXAS update completes the job.

and weathering, most is and so plenty of time will be needed to get the best from what’s on offer. Work begins in the lower hull, tabs having to be removed ready for the floor to be fixed in place, this is then followed by the lining of the internal surfaces with additional armour, shelving, driver’s station, equipment and seats. Most of this is then painted Sea Foam Green (Tamiya Sky being a good match), ready for weathering. The engine is fully detailed, featuring a

complete engine block, gearbox and radiator. Combined with the large additional radiator that sits under the right-hand side of the hull, this creates a wonderfully detailed section and though little more that the gearbox can be seen with the engine access panel open, benefits from careful painting and as seen here, additional detail such as cables, pipes and the like. The rear fighting compartment is dominated by the racks for the ten ready-rounds for the TOW missile launcher. Each of

these containers is moulded in two halves with an additional end cap and so need care to assemble and clean up, sponge sanding sticks being perfect to ensure that no flat spots appear around he circumference of each one. Take care as well when assembling them that you follow the numbered sequence and don’t mix them up; tiny tabs and slots are used to line them up on their racks and they need to accurately positioned so that they don’t interfere with each other and before they are fixed to the right

hand wall of the fighting compartment. Mix them up and you’ll have a devil of a job getting them in place. Ask me how I know…

COMPLETING THE INTERIOR

The fighting compartment is finished off with a large bench seat and some very cool looking seat belts. These hang from the roof of the compartment and are moulded in a very soft, flexible material that can be glued in place with either normal glue, or superglue. Once painted up they look amazing and we hope that

U

You don’t need to be a full-on scratchbuilder to require materials such as soft metal tubing; it’s always useful to have to hand for small detailing tasks such as cable conduits, struts, framework etc. Softer metals such as aluminium and copper are recommended for this as they can be cut and shaped with ease, using normal modelling tools. They can also be glued with cyanoacrylate.

that will continue, maybe even being used for aircraft harnesses and the like. As with the hull, the turret is fully detailed, or rather, fully detailed so far as you can see. Being hidden, the gun breech has been omitted, as are a number of features under the roof. Once again, there are clear periscopes to paint and fix in place, as well as decals to apply, plenty being used to finish many of the smaller items including the video screens, keyboard face and cover. The whole effect is nice and busy and though not perfect look great once assembled, especially once the very neat turret basket and surrounding tunnel has been added. With so many parts to assemble and then cram into a remarkably confined space, it was of initial concern that there would

There’s no getting away from the fact that the M3A3 is hardly the most interesting of vehicles when it comes to finish, but it can be improved a little. The model was first sprayed with a mixture of XF-1 Flat Black lightened with XF-64 Red Brown, this colour being used under the hull, around the suspension, under the turret and around the engine vents and other areas of dark shadow. Once dry, the model was oversprayed with several layers of Tamiya XF-59 Desert Yellow lightened with XF-57 Buff and XF-2 Flat White, individual panels then being masked and sprayed with lighter shades of this basic colour, as well as green and straight Buff to create a busy-looking finish.

With the camouflage colours in place, the model was sprayed with several layers of Games Workshop Purity Seal to produce a wonderfully smooth, satin finish. Happy everything was dry, the details, corners and panel lines were defined with repeated pin washes of AK Interactive’s Wash For German Vehicles In Dark Yellow. This is a nice neutral colour that looks fine on vehicles such as this, without looking too dark. Any excess was removed with a flat brush moistened with white spirit.

With the wash dry, the model was drybrushed with several layers of Xtracolor X812 Gulf Sand US Army/Marines. Each layer was lightened slightly with Humbrol Matt White to bring out the very delicate detail and define the edges.

A view inside the fighting compartment reveals some of the accessories used for this build, most of which came from Tamiya’s accessory sets. Note the dust build-up on the treadplate, added here with Mig Productions Beach Sand and European Dust.

The tracks were painted with Tamiya Silver Leaf aerosol paint, decanted into a jar and then darkened with XF-1 Flat black. As the tracks were moulded in a very dark, almost black colour, it was a simple case of removing the paint from the track pads with a cotton bud moistened with lacquer thinner to reveal their rubber construction. Weathering comprised layers of airbrushed Tamiya XF-57 Buff, AK Interactive Dust Effects and pigments.

The tarpaulins and stowage was sculpted with both Magic Sculp and Green Stuff, the The remaining paintwork followed some latter allowing thinner fairly standard ideas with the application of and more flexible pigments, washes and scuffs and chips – here sheets to be created being applied to the tools with a sharp pencil. with ease.

The stowage on the upper deck was copied from a photograph, spare track links from the kit, a tow bar from Dragon’s M1A1 and a sculpted kit bag (Magic Sculp), completing the picture. Each item was carefully painted and weathered to match the surrounding vehicle. The red top on the jerry can adds a much-needed splash of colour, the can coming from the Real Model MEXAS update set.

For deeper shades and ingrained layers of dirt I used Wilder’s Black Smoke Wash, very thin layers being applied around the finer details.

be problems getting it all to fit in place, but that was soon dispelled, everything lining up perfectly. Indeed, any fit problems that were encountered were of my own doing, additional details getting in the way of kit-supplied components. Along with the plastic components, you’ll also find a full suite of decals that help to decorate the smaller items. As mentioned, the TV screens feature displays that show them as powered up and though that is unlikely to be wanted for a vehicle at rest, they at least add a little colour to what is a fairly bland looking interior. The same can be said for the ready rounds for the TOW missiles. These are finished in a dark green colour and though this contrasts nicely with the pale green interior surfaces, they can hardly be called bright, so the addition of coloured warning bands, brown and yellow, add immeasurably to their look once in place.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As mentioned earlier, multiple shades of sand were sprayed around the model. In this shot you can see the effect of that step once further embellished with dark washes to define the detail and then splashed dust and pigments to add the dirt.

Much of the dust applied to the model was in the form of airbrushed layers of AK Interactive Africa Dust Effects, thinly sprayed over the model and then blended away using a flat brush moistened with white spirit. This left fine deposits of dust that could be further embellished by flicking this colour over the model and then adding darker washes to bring the shadows back – particularly evident on top of the sight housing (painted green in this case to help break up the huge expanse of sand!).

There is no doubt that the detail supplied in this kit is more than acceptable, but there is room for a considerable number of additional items, many of which will be visible inside the completed model. Check any photograph of the real Bradley – both the M3A3 and earlier versions – and you’ll find cables, conduits, small junction boxes, straps, stowage and all manner of other cables and pipes needed to both power the vehicle’s complex systems and engine. How much of this you choose to add is very much up to you; for this build concentration was placed on bulking out the engine bay details with cable and pipe runs and adding some addition stowage around the racks inside the fighting compartment. One detail that was not added was the strapping that connects the upper and lower clamps for the TOW rounds. These items are shown on the schematic that features on the box top and though they would have been easy to add, a lack of time and their relatively inconspicuous appearance within the fighting compartment, forced their absence from this build. ● TMMI 229 November 2014

oam Armour is a thick, water-based resin designed to strengthen foam ready for diorama landscaping. It dries overnight to a tough, smooth, durable, scratch resistant surface. In addition, its adhesive properties allow application of scatter and grass mats before it is dry. In this article, Andy Argent shows you how to use this product, along with Create and Shape, to make a golf course diorama. After being sent some supplies from John Bristow at Deluxe Materials, I couldn’t wait to get started on a new diorama project. I wanted to portray a section of a golf course and wanted an elevated look to the scene.

The basic shape of the diorama was made and sealed with the Foam Armour. The whole scene was covered in the Create and Shape and left to dry. It is a lot better than polyfiller. It adds so little weight that, to be honest, I thought I had been sent empty jars. It is applied and shaped really easily and sands beautifully.

Using Foam Armour, a section of short-haired grass matt was glued in place to create the golf course green. Different length grass mats were added for rough grass effects.

After priming with paint, lily pads, foliage were added; clear resin was poured in stages for the pond. The whole scene was painted in green. Sand was achieved with textured / sand colour paint.

The scene was added to until a realistic look was achieved. Andy says that Foam Armour and Create and Shape are great products that converted scrap foam into useful diorama material.

BLOHM & VOSS BV141 www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; 81728 The BV141 is one of the weirdest aircraft of the Second World War, its asymmetrical planform looking completely unnatural, although it was an effective flyer apparently, and the observer had a clear view straight down and to the right. Hobbyboss recently tooled up for this new kit and from an in-box inspection it appears that they have done a good job of it. The crux of the subject is the glazing, because if this isn’t done right then whatever’s been done with the rest of the model becomes a little academic. Thankfully, the canopy parts are beautifully executed with super-clear panes and frosted framework to aid paint adhesion. The cockpit(s) are well appointed and the sizeable airframe carries extremely restrained, recessed panel lines. Two markings-options are provided for prototype machines. MN

To their credit, Italeri must be commended on being bold enough to create this model, but as with their new Sunderland, it has been rendered with somewhat over-emphasised airframe panel lines that are significantly too prominent for the small scale. We really, really wanted to love this kit and once you’ve looked past the airframe, it’s clear to see that there are some excellent touches; the interior is thoroughly detailed, undercarriage looks excellent, engines are well moulded and the Cartograf decals are close to perfect. But to create a truly scale effect, those panel lines will need to be reduced with either filler or fine stretched sprue. MN

BRAZILIAN EMB-314 SUPER TUCANO www.creativemodels.co.uk Scale; 1:48 Materials; IM, PE, WS Kit number; 81727 Designed as a lightweight, cheap to operate attack and COIN aircraft, the EMB Super Tucano is a fine choice for a new kit in 1:48. Though its less warlike forebear has been available from Alley Cat for some time now, this is the first time that this aircraft has been available in miniature and so its release will be welcomed by those keen to build aircraft from some of the smaller air forces from around the world. As with all Hobbyboss kits, this one is well produced, well packaged and attractive. The parts are nicely moulded, with finely defined panel lines and delicately rendered detail in evidence, across its 150-odd parts. Highlights include a fully detailed cockpit with multipart ejector seats, photo-etched seat straps and HUD frame and a very comprehensive set of whizz-bangs to hang under the wings. Close inspection of the smaller parts reveals how far this company has come since its first tentative steps on the market, the detail and delicacy of each piece looking every bit the equal of those found from their more illustrious rivals. Indeed, if I had seen the weapons sprues in a Hasegawa box, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid… Along with the plastic parts, the kit contains a neatly drawn set of instructions and decals – spread over three sheets! – that offer a choice of three aircraft: Brazilian, Chilean and finally, a wonderful sharkmouth-decorated, Colombian example. The decals are well-printed and comprehensive, a full sheet being offered to decorate the Sidewinders, Snake-eyes, MK.82s and GBU-12s that can be found in the kit. SP

A-37A DRAGONFLY www.pocketbond.co.uk Scale; 1:48 • Materials; IM, PE, WS • Kit number; 02888 With only the venerable Monogram kit for company, the modelling world has hardly fallen over itself to replicate this aircraft in 1:48 and so the release of a new kit is certainly welcome. Given the simplicity of the real aircraft, this new kit is a far from complex offering that will please both beginners and seasoned modellers alike, the sensible breakdown of the airframe and the care with which the cockpit, undercarriage and weapons have been tackled, pointing to a relaxing and rewarding build. Detail is well created, the use of both incised panel lines and raised features on the airframe offering a pleasing degree of complexity, which in concert with the fully appointed cockpit and weapons fit, should result in a replica oozing character and interest. As with all kits from this manufacturer, we find that all of the parts are well-moulded in grey and clear plastic, a small photoetched fret offering some of the more delicate details such as intake guards, seat straps and what look to be strengthening strips for the drop-tanks. The package is rounded off with a small decal sheet offering one rather anonymous USAF aircraft and though a choice would have been nice, its enough to begin with, options of course being available from the aftermarket for the many and varied schemes that this aircraft has carried throughout its service life. PIPER PA-18 WITH BUSH-WHEELS www.revell.de/en Scale; 1:32 Materials; IM, WS Kit number; 04890 If like us you’ve enjoyed many of the television programmes found on satellite or cable TV that tell the story of the bush pilots from Northern Canada and Alaska, you will instantly recognise this aircraft and its oversized, balloon tyres. Indeed, there cannot be many that haven’t at some point seen one of these aircraft, such is their popularity and use around the world. This is the second release of this kit by Revell and as such, features only small modifications to replicate the two Alaskan based aircraft found on the decal sheet, one a State Trooper’s aircraft in a very smart blue and white scheme and the other, a more sombre, privatelyowned Super Cub finished in overall yellow with black codes and lightning flash. Though simple in design, the kit features plenty of delicate detail, a full cabin and engine being just two of the highlights. Moulded in white plastic, the parts are smooth and flashfree and though hardly festooned with panel lines, the airframe features pleasing structural features that replicate the type’s tube and fabric construction, to a tee. Clear parts, so important in an aircraft such as this are superbly moulded and distortion free. As may be expected the package is rounded off with a reasonable set of instructions and a fine decal sheet that provides everything that you will need to finish either of the featured aircraft. SP Another nice kit from Revell and one that we are itching to build; indeed, we can see this one forming part of a small vignette surrounded by pallets, cargo, a forklift… It would be plain mean to criticise this fat-tyred beauty!

GCT 155MM AU-F1 SPH BASED ON T-72 www.creativemodels.co.uk Scale; 1:35 • Materials; IM, PE, CW, SVT Kit number; 83835 Although the description on the boxside information panel says that this is the AU-F1 based on the AMX30 chassis (copy/pasted from Wikipedia) as in Meng’s kit, Hobbyboss’s release is actually the variant based on the Russian T-72 tank. The massive turret mounts a 155mm howitzer, fed by autoloader but unlike Meng, HB have chosen not to represent the entire turret interior, just two depictions of the ammunition racks for viewing through the open access panels. This is a far more practical solution in our opinion as most modellers won’t require full internal detail. The T-72 hull is effectively detailed and looks different enough to the AMX30 to make this a worthwhile scalemodel creation. The weakest part of the kit are the one-piece tracks which don’t look great and really need replacing with Friulmodel equivalents (ATL-11). MN

Interesting variant of the AU-F1 on the venerable T-72 hull and running gear. Good detail and sensible levels of internal detail Tracks are not the best one-piece items we’ve seen and could do with upgrading

KV-5 SOVIET SUPER HEAVY TANK www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 • vMATERIALS: IM, PE KIT NUMBER; 2006 The Russian KV-5 (Object 225) was a (cancelled) project for a ‘superheavy’ main battle tank. It was to be fitted with 107mm main gun in the large turret and machine-gun in small secondary turret, mounted on the forward deck. The development team began the KV-5 project in the summer of 1941, however, because the Kirov factory where the tank was being developed was in Leningrad, it was cancelled due to the Siege of that city which ran from September ‘41 to January ‘44. The KV-5 was a true ‘paper-panzer’ as no prototype was constructed, but it has had somewhat of a resurrection thanks to the video game ‘World Of Tanks’ in which it figures as one of the tanks you can ‘drive’, which might be one of the reasons this kit was created. Takom have moulded the kit conventionally, but in black plastic for some reason. It comes with individually moulded track links and suspension swingarms and it’s a fairly simple, quick to construction model. Great fun to experiment with; bare steel or perhaps red-oxide primer in a factory scene? MN

It’s a helicopter with serious presence and while I normally hate ‘tiger meet’ schemes, the subtle dark grey stripes do look rather handsome on this Royal Navy machine. The kit comes moulded across two large and one smaller sprue of light grey polystyrene, plus sprue of clear parts and a sheet of decals. Even though it comes with a detailed crew cabin interior (and cockpit of course) the model doesn’t look too intimidating to build and could be undertaken by a relative newcomer to helicopter modelling, albeit a person with patience and good eyesight, as there are some tiny parts here! Surface detail is excellent with very subtle, scale-like airframe detailing consisting of recessed panel joints and extremely fine, raised rivets which look beautiful; so restrained they are barely there. Add to this a lovely RN scheme and Revell have a winner on their hands. MN

KIT PREVIEW TAKOM 1:35 BRITISH WW1 MK.IV FEMALE HEAVY BATTLE TANK ● KIT NO.2009 Photo-etched brass parts and unditching beam chain are included.

How do Takom’s new Mk.IV tank kits compare with Tamiya’s model?

Decals for British and captured German tanks are supplied.

THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES...

I

t was inevitable that Tamiya’s new 1:35 WW1 Mk.IV ‘Male’ tank – issued to commemorate 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War – would be followed by other kits of the same/similar subject and Chinese newcomers Takom have stepped up to the challenge. Reviewed here is the machine-gun armed ‘Female’ variant; Takom have also issued the 6pdr-armed ‘Male’ version, as per Tamiya’s model, so most of the following descriptions apply to both the Female and Male kits by Takom. The Female is presented attractively in a sepia tinted box with crisply drawn illustrations, depicting a ‘beutepanzer’, a captured machine in German hands (the Male’s box is blue-tinted). The instruction booklet comes with a lovely brown card cover and striking graphics; very stylish. The captured tank’s camouflage is a far more colourful option than the original British khaki scheme, with visually striking German crosses on the hull sides and the name ‘Ännchen’ on front a rear plates. The detail on the kit parts is very crisp and well formed; the innumerable rivets across the model’s outer surfaces vary in size where appropriate, adding to the realism. The major difference between Tamiya’s and Takom’s kits is the lack of motorisation equipment

in the latter production, which allows the inclusion of enhanced detail in the area of the drive-gear inside the rear hull-side ‘tail booms’. It’s an attractive inclusion but it’s completely hidden when the hull-side panels are closed up, so all that detail is somewhat in vain. A slightly more useful inclusion is the detail on the outer face of the track-return channels (parts D14/D16) and the mud ejector chutes. Again, this detail is hidden when the model is built as per the instructions, but if you are modelling a knocked out or disabled tank that has shed one or both of its tracks (perhaps within a diorama), these details will be on view and are therefore welcome. Takom have also included the inner sections of the machine guns, missing in the Tamiya kit. The tank’s construction is quite different to Tamiya’s kit, with the inner hull area building into an open-sided, rectangular ‘box’ to which are fitted the driver’s compartment with its frontal machine gun, exhaust pipe, fuel tank and other smaller parts, in advance of the two hull-side ‘track lozenge’ units. These are built up into finished modules complete with tracks and even the unditching beam rails; they then simply cement to the pre-built inner hull box to form the Mk.IV’s main structure. Assuming the fit

Tracks are multi-part (five parts per link) and will take time to assemble.

60

External detailing is extremely well done and in-scale.

between the box and side ‘pods’ is close to perfect, this is quite an efficient way to build the model. Another notable difference between the Tamiya and Takom models are the tracks. Tamiya’s are possibly the quickest and easiest to build individual-links tracks ever found in a kit box; they are fantastic and after assembly, you wish that all tank kit tracks could be that painless. It’s quite a different story with Takom’s model; each link is made up from five parts (one outer treadplate and four inner link parts), each one requiring trimming from the sprue, cleaning up and cementing in place with precision. It’s enough to test any modeller’s patience and it’s a lot more work for a very slight (but again, hidden) increase in detail. One advantage of the Takom tracks over Tamiya’s set is the inclusion of grousers, which add an extra touch of ‘visual interest’, so it is ‘give and take’. It’s very interesting to see how Tamiya and Takom have approached the subject in their own ways and each offers the modeller advantages and disadvantages. There isn’t a clear winner, although Tamiya’s tracks are hugely quicker to assemble. At the end of the day, it’s down to the modeller which one they choose buy! ● MN MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . IM, PE, MC, WS Availability: Good model shops everywhere www.pocketbond.co.uk TMMI’S OPINION? A highly detailed kit with some appealing touches of detail inside and out, although the tracks are complex and fiddly to build. Superior internal detailing, full machine-gun detail and track grousers are plus points.

Close-up view of the driver’s compartment front plate.

Unlike Tamiya’s Mk.IV, Takom’s kit has detail on the upper track guides.

Drive sprockets carry bolthead detail, although it’ll end up hidden.

Scale drive chains are also included, but these will also be hidden.

Extreme close up of the roadwheel rollers; nicely done.

Above/below; a German infantry photographer figure is included.

The Editor’s Page... THE THORNYCROFT TYPE J LORRY IN 54MM

GREAT WAR TRANSPORTER Tommy’s War have been putting out some wonderful 54mm First World War figures over the last couple of years or so and now they have changed up a gear and created their first vehicle kit. It’s a Thornycroft Type J lorry, issued in two forms, a cargo variant (featured here) and an anti-aircraft version. More are to follow, notably an ambulance variant which should prove popular. The kit is cast in conventional yellow polyurethane resin (over fifty resin parts) and comes with strips of extruded styrene beam and some small photo-etched brass parts. Detail is subtle across the model and casting is free from air bubbles and other flaws. A decal sheet is included, offering markings for a several vehicles in the service of Britain and the Empire. The British Thornycroft Type J was an extraordinarily versatile vehicle and was built in large quantities – over 5000 vehicles had been supplied by the Basingstoke factory by the end of the First World War – and was used by all branches of the forces across Europe and the British Empire during the course of the conflict. www.tommyswar.co.uk See you again on November 20th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com

The resin castings of the Thornycroft are without flaws and only need a modest amount of ‘clean-up’. A razor saw is the best tool to cut off the moulding plugs; it’s tempting to use sidecutters, but this can risk splitting the resin part. The kit is in 54mm, which equates to 1:32, as scale that has been accepted as standard by the WW1 modelling community over the years.
