The de Havilland Tiger Moth first flew in late October 1931 and after bring accepted into the RAF service as a trainer the following year, has enjoyed widespread use universal popularity ever since. Surviving the jet age, the diminutive biplane was finally retired from RAF service in 1959. Over 7,000 were produced, with an estimated number of over 250 remaining flying today.

FULL BUILD: MILITARY HELICOPTER TRUMPETER 1:72 BOEING VERTOL CH-47A CHINOOK â—? KIT NO.01621

THUNDERING RO I

n 1960, Boeing bought Vertol Aircraft Co., a helicopter manufacturer in Philadelphia, Pa. The company had three tandem-rotor helicopters in production: the Chinook for the Army, the Sea Knight for the Navy and the Marines and the commercial 107-11 for the airlines. Chinooks first were used in combat in 1965 during

the Vietnam conflict. By 1968, the Chinook had put in 161,000 hours of flying time, carrying 22.4 million passengers and more than 1.3 million tons of cargo. During the last days of the war, one Chinook is reported to have carried 147 refugees in a single lift. CH-47A, B and C models served with distinction for a decade until the war's end in 1975.

During 2002, Boeing was developing the CH-47F, scheduled for first production in 2004 and was under contract to modernize at least 300 Chinooks to the new F-model standard, which featured reduced vibration, an integrated cockpit control system and more powerful engines with digital fuel controls. These improvements would

make the Chinook fully compatible with 21st century operational and war-fighting requirements and improve the aircraft's efficiency and effectiveness. (From Boeing's website). The CH-47 as represented in the Trumpeter box is a machine assigned to the US Army Aviation Test Board at Fort Rucker, Alabama. This helicopter was used for logistics evaluations.

Vitor Costa builds Trumpeter's 1:72 CH-47A Chinook and proves that an Eduard Zoom set can make all the difference to a kit's cockpit

ROTORS IN 1:72 CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

As usual I started with the cockpit and because it's relatively simple in construction and so much will be seen on the completed model, I decided to use the Eduard set (SS314) which would greatly improve this area of the kit. Seats are represented in a somewhat simple way, so using some Evergreen

strip I improved them a bit by building their steel support structures. Eduard's PE belts do the rest. Other than this, there is no need for further work to improve the cockpit since almost everything that is required is in the PE set. The interior was painted entirely with Gunze's H-57 (Aircraft Grey) and over this I used black and burnt

umber oil paints to give it a colour-wash. This enhanced the engraved lines and then I re-applied a much-diluted base colour to soften the effect. Because this area looks more like an aquarium than a cockpit – we see almost everything inside – I decided to add the cables that are visible on the back of the instrument panel. Using superglue, copper

wire of several thicknesses, nylon thread, stretched sprue, Evergreen rod and tweezers I got started on one of the most boring parts in the assembling of this kit. With the interior done, I could move to the fuselage parts and these are marred by a series of sink-marks that needed putty to fix. The fuselage should be sanded (600 grit) to smooth

The seats received enhanced frames using styrene strip.

The tiny etched parts from the Eduard set were handled with a cocktail stick for precise positioning. Superglue is needed to fix them,

V the surface because certain

areas of these parts have a somewhat rough texture. Before closing, the side apertures where the windows will later be fixed should be sanded so the transparent pieces can be properly positioned. There is no need to paint the interior because once closed, you cannot see anything inside. To strengthen the junction of the two fuselage halves I glued some strips of evergreen inside. After the mating of the two fuselage halves, join lines were sealed with liquefied Tamiya putty, applied in thin, successive layers in order to let each one dry completely. After drying, this was sanded to verify if there was any

need for retouching. You should allow the putty to dry completely so it does not shrink later.

Upgraded grilles

While the putty dried, I decided to enhance the appearance of the protection grilles over the engine cooling intakes, as these parts of the kit did not look very convincing. The simplest and quickest way I found to do this was to use self-adhesive aluminium tape that is sold in supermarkets. I rolled the checkered handgrip of my X-Acto knife handle over a piece of the tape while resting it on a soft surface such as cardboard or a piece of wood, to allow the texture

The Chinook’s cockpit looks excellent under a layer of paint and with PE parts fitted.

The improvement offered by this simple yet effective technique is clear to see.

to imprint into the malleable metal tape. The desired amounts were then cut out and carefully placed on the model, over each moulded grille. Do not push the tape too hard in order to avoid losing the grid effect.

Clear parts

The transparent parts come individually wrapped and are clear enough to afford a good view into the cockpit. However, there is a mistake in the framework of the side windows (in the main moulding) and I was forced to correct this by sanding, something always risky with these parts. Being a fragile component, it was better to make corrections after it was in its place as was better

supported, thereby limiting the chance of cracking in the clear moulding.

Window masking

Now for the tedious task of masking all those windows panes... Before I started masking I gave all the clear areas a polish with Tamiya Compound in order to remove fine scratches. Various types of masking tape are available, in differing widths. With an X-Acto knife and a metal ruler (plastic ones are of no use as I generally cut more plastic from the ruler than tape!) I could cut what I needed without having to waste anything. With strips of different sizes, I outlined the windows, using

A thick paste of oil paints was made up and then applied in a heavy layer over the whole model. As we can see, the paint covered the whole model to the point where the original colour can barely be seen. Soft cloth and Q-Tips were then used to remove much of the slurry, leaving a shaded finish.

a toothpick to correct the position of the tape to the desired point. Using tape is always better than masking with liquid mask alone, because when the mask is removed we can be left with jagged edges, so I use it only to fill the areas between the strips of tape.

Now comes the fun part, the painting! I had recently bought a new airbrush and was anxious to test it and there's nothing better than starting with the pre-shading. Being a single colour paint scheme, pre-shading is the easiest and quickest way to impart an attractively shaded look

With much of the oil paint wiped off, we can see how the model’s paint takes on a stained and shaded appearance. With further, gentle rubbing, the effect becomes more subtle and when done, is sealed with Future polish.

to the model. I found no photographic references for this helicopter, just a profile and some information in the book 'Boeing Helicopters, CH-47 Chinook' by David Anderton and Jay Miller, so I didn’t want to depict a very old machine, just enough

shading so it didn’t look brand new. Time to apply the DayGlo panels. I decided to try the Gunze product, but it’s very transparent and to obtain a good result it's essential to apply a white undercoat first. I applied several layers to

build up the correct colour. Next, I used a broad brush to apply liberal layer of Future acrylic floor polish (Johnson's Klear in the UK) which seals and protects the paint for the next step, dirtying up the kit.

U

The kit decals, as with all waterslide transfers, must be applied onto a glossy surface so all traces of air pockets can be excluded. If even a trace of air remains under the markings, it will be seen in the form of unattractive and unrealistic ‘silvering’ on the decal surface. Setting solutions by Microscale were used here, softening the markings so they conform fully to the model’s surfaces. When dry, the decal shrinks slightly, tightening up and hopefully creating a ‘painted-on’ look.

Mini Review... DIOPARK 1:35 ‘70S GERMAN-MADE CIVILIAN CAR W/IED ACCESSORIES KIT NO.DP35013 luckymodel.com

We’ll have a more detailed examination of this new kit in the next issue, but for now here’s a quick look at DioPark’s latest creation. It’s a 1970s car (clearly an ‘MB?’) and is in the military modelling scale of 1:35, making it perfect for modern-era dioramas (middle east etc) and for civilian and science-fiction street scenes. The detail in the injection moulded parts is excellent and the kit comes with a complete interior and individual doors.

weathering V Heavy I mixed up a dark concoction

of oil paints using ivory black (65%), burnt umber (30%) and white (5%) diluted with a little white spirit, creating a sludge with the consistency of yogurt. With a brush, I applied a generous layer of this mixture to the whole model and allowed it to set until it developed a semi-matt appearance (in Portugal, in dry weather, three to four hours was enough) and when had dried, I removed most of it with a cloth, working in a smooth and circular motion. With another cloth and an even smoother action, I further removed the sludge until the residue remained only in the recesses and surface detail. In areas that were difficult to access, Q-Tips were a great help. After creating the amount of dirt I desired, I let it dry thoroughly for two days, then applied another coat of Future, thus sealing the oil paints so I could start applying the decals without spoiling the effect. I applied the decals with the help of Micro Sol and Micro Set and used a piece of suede to press the decal into the lines; the suede is good because it does not crease the decals or shed fibres. To obtain the final finish, I applied Humbrol No.49 Matt Varnish, mixing in 15% of Humbrol gloss varnish of the same brand, airbrushed at a high pressure in order

The addition of the very fine antennae on the nose of the aircraft provide the perfect finishing touch.

The subtly shaded look, created with the heavy oil-paint ‘slurry’, brings life to the otherwise monotone olive drab.

get the kit quite 'wet' with varnish and thus preventing the whitening (icing) of the kit. I had to stir the Humbrol varnish very well before using it, on average two to three minutes with a high speed mixer. If one doesn't do this, there’s the risk of the varnish staying sticky for a long time. Finally, I fitted the engine exhausts that had been painted earlier with Alclad II Aluminium and Jet Exhaust and... That was it!

Final thoughts

In conclusion, whilst not being easy kit, with some work it results in a wonderful model to look at. There is enough detail to get a decent result right out of the box, however there is room for improvement, as there is with any kit. In terms of accuracy it doesn’t look bad and now that I look at it I see a Chinook... And a very appealing one indeed. An inexpensive kit and

possibly the best in this scale. Is it worth the effort? Without a doubt. l

ALL BLACK, IN BLUE Jeff Mangeat builds the new 1:24 Italeri IVECO Stralis ‘Active Space’, straight out of the box

I

n 2007, IVECO revamped their Stralis truck by creating the so-called 'All Blacks' series, as the manufacturer is a partner of Team New Zealand rugby. Produced mainly in black, the Stralis featured Maori tribal designs, but they can however be supplied in red, white or blue. This vehicle is equipped with a Cursor 10 diesel engine which comes in two sizes; the ten-litre Cursor 10-400 with a power output of 400bhp and the thirteen-litre Cursor 10-430, creating, as you might expect, 430bhp.

Power delivery is handled by a ZF gearbox and braking is provided by powerful disc brakes. Italeri has reproduced a very attractive kit of this flagship of the IVECO fleet. Having seen the pictures of the test shot build-up at www.italeri.com, I already suspected it was a model of very high quality and upon unpacking the contents of the box when the review sample arrived, my expectations were confirmed. The time between its announcement and the kit going on sale seemed long, but this is easily explained

by scrutinising each sprue; the detail is fantastic on all elements of the chassis, engine and cabin; completely new moulds were created specifically for this kit of the Stralis and that takes time!

POWER BY CURSOR

The chassis builds up from rails, each riddled with holes for optional equipment and crossmembers; no trace of a one-piece frame here, which I hate! The locations of the crossmembers are well marked and assembly goes well, but the cementing must be done on a flat

surface to avoid distortion. The front and rear axles can be connected to the chassis before painting everything in medium grey. The Cursor 13 engine is a little marvel; it comprises twenty-five parts alone with all ancillary equipment necessary for its operation. All parts were cut from the sprue, cleaned up and sorted by colour (steel, aluminium, matt black and white) in readiness for painting. Details were then touched in with white, orange, aluminium, yellow, red, purple and black. The engine parts were then

cemented as shown in the instructions. Final assembly includes the engine, transmission and radiator and as the saying goes, 'we have a model in the model'.

HOME SWEET HOME

The interior of the cabin is a perfect replica of the real truck, with many details reproduced. The dashboard deserves special attention during the assembly of its two main parts in order to conceal the very noticeable join-line that runs along the top of the completed structure. This very visible seam was generously glued (avoiding cement runs) and after drying, the surplus was removed by sanding, paying attention not to damage the detail. With the help of photos, I used Maskol to

protect the ashtray, the heating controls and switches (these areas retain the grey plastic look) while I painted the dashboard in light grey primer. I then covered the areas to remain clear using Maskol and then applied the medium grey. Finally, the dark grey details and other colours were touched in with a very fine brush. The cabin's interior walls were painted following the same principle and assembly continued unhindered. This kit is a real pleasure to build; even the, even the driver's bunk-bed panel is present! The top of the bed is absent, but this is not visible when the cab is finished. I also noticed the lack of

The engine module has been fitted into the chassis, along with the fuel tanks and other structures.

U

Pretty much every major part of the Stralis has been depicted in this kit and it looks very detailed indeed. The detail in Italeri’s Stralis kit is exemplary throughout. Here we see the exhaust box and underside of the forward chassis, showing the engine sump and steering.

of the real Stralis, is it an automatic? I can't say if it is an oversight from Italeri but it would surprise if it were, given the many other details present, especially all the storage lockers for the passenger and other structures that become invisible once the cabin elements are closed up. One little nitpick; the empty door pocket could have been be open and the cabin lacks the power-window switches and mirror-adjustors on the door panels. Oh well, we can't have everything!

possible. Its backing panel and the area around the windshield were painted matt black and then came the long process of detail painting; each component on the plate received its colour using pictures found on the internet as a guide. The body panels are separate mouldings and they were primed and painted with Tamiya TS-51 Racing Blue. This colour is quite translucent so it is advisable to apply a layer of plain blue between the primer and the TS-51. The matt black area around the door windows was then painted. The tribal logos were applied and the black area was masked before varnishing the body, the large logo on the shiny blue and black matt forcing this particular operation. Unlike other kits

The cab components prior to, and during final assembly. Note how the cab ‘inner’ builds into a box to which the outer panels are fixed.

This kit must have one of the smallest scales we’ve dealt with in TMMI; 1:4105. The kit is still a good size though and all parts are covered with some superb detail, both raised and recessed. Model ship painting skills will be handy when finishing this model as it will need a light touch with the weathering. More details on the kit next issue.

of trucks, cab assembly is accomplished by gluing the panels around the 'cockpit' sub-assembly. To avoid accidental adhesive marks, the areas near windows were fixed using PVA 'white' glue. It just remained to fix the small parts, spoilers and other accessories, to complete the model. To bring a shine to the lights and mirrors, aluminium foil was placed behind the transparent parts. The assembly was really fun, this new generation of well-researched kit features precision assemblies and a much more authentic representation of detail. Alternative livery possibilities abound, starting with the German company 'Monjean Transporte', also included in the box. An excellent new kit from Italeri! ●

BOBIK

Pat Johnston describes how he assembled, painted and weathered Tamiya’s new and tiny 1:48 BA-64B armoured car

RUSSIA’S EYES AND EARS ON THE BATTLEFIELD

P

rior to the Second Word War, the Soviet Union dedicated a lot of their war effort towards the construction of fully armoured cars to provide reconnaissance for the tank divisions. Although most of this energy switched to the production of fully tracked vehicles after the German invasion in June 1941, the GAZ Company

designed a fully armoured body to fit over the GAZ 64, and later the GAZ 67. These vehicles were influenced by the design of the German Sdkfz.222 armoured car, incorporating sloped armour all around, and a small, one man turret equipped with a 7.62mm light machine gun. The BA-64B went on to serve the Soviet military throughout the rest of the

war and well into the 1950s. The release of the BA-64B in 1:48 by Tamiya came as a bit of a surprise to me, as I had no idea it was coming. I had given some thought to purchasing the all resin and photo-etched kit by Hauler, but Tamiya’s release made me change my plan. Although the kit is very small, and the box contained only one sprue of parts,

don’t be fooled; sometimes good things do come in small packages. The kit was a delight to work on, from start to finish. A simple, fast build and on to the finishing, just my type of model. If you'll follow me along, I’ll endeavour to show how easy it is to get some pure model-building joy from such a simple kit with loads of personality. ●

kit was a delight “toThe work on, from start to finish... ” The turret interior was left basically alone. I wasn’t sure at this point whether I’d try to add a figure or not. In the end, I ran out of time anyway…

I used a shovel from the Tamiya M4A1 Sherman kit, as it had better detail. I also used some spare etched pieces from Hauler to attach it to the bonnet.

The pry-bar was scratchbuilt using a section of Evergreen rod. Lead foil was used for the strapping to attach it to the bonnet. Fine copper wire was used to plumb the headlamp and the horn on the fender.

A few bits and bobs were sourced from the spares box to give the Bobik a ‘lived-in’ look.

Painting begins. For a primer, I used Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey, with a little bit of X-22 Clear added which gives the Grey a bit more smoothness. Several thin, misted coats were applied to ensure good, uniform coverage.

All the sub-assemblies get this coverage, including the turret, above. They were also given twenty-four hours to cure fully.

The next step was to add the white edges to the fenders and the front end. I assume the Soviets did this to aid in night convoy driving where headlamps were prohibited. I used Tamiya XF-2 Flat White for this. There was no need to over paint the entire hull, only ensure the areas that were affected are fully covered.

The next step was to mask off the areas that will remain white, using Tamiya’s excellent masking tape.

The masking is shown here complete. Patience here rewards the modeller later...

Now I applied my base Russian 4B0 Green. I like to use Tamiya XF-73 Dark Green (JGSDF) for this; several passes are made to ensure complete coverage. This was left to cure fully overnight.

Now, our previously-applied masking tape can be removed. While this looks a bit stark now, the weathering to come will change this quite a bit.

Mini Review... PLUS MODEL 1:35 waste container KIT NO.433 UK import/distribution; creativemodels.co.uk

For a faded top coat, I like to use Gunze Sangyo’s acrylic #320 Dark Green. Although this colour is marked as dark, it is in fact a very pale green, perfect for my purposes. This was applied randomly, in a cloud-type pattern. The aim is to give the paint a sun-bleached, or faded, look.

After a few coats of my favourite gloss clear (Future Floor Wax in my case, Johnson’s Klear in the UK), I now applied the kit’s decals. My BA-64 will get only a set of generic numerals.

Here we have another fabulous diorama accessory release from Plus Model; a pair of modern industrial-sized bins with rotating lids and casters. The resin castings are very fine and the bins come complete with decals – brilliant!

Again, several thin, misted coats are preferred to one thick application. You will see the flat taking hold with each of the misted coats. The model is now ready for its weathering.

The model now needs to be restored to a matt finish. I have found that I get the best results using these products: Vallejo’s #70.540 Matt Medium, #70.520 Matt Varnish, thinned with their own #71.361 Airbrush Thinner. Buy them at; www.creativemodels.co.uk

I use Winsor & Newton oils almost exclusively. These two colours; #25 Lamp Black, and #35 Raw Umber will be evenly mixed to form the basis of my washes and outlining.

A small dot of each of these colours is deposited in my palette.

Here is the model fully colour-washed, with all surface details outlined. This process can be a bit tedious, but the results are well worth the effort.

A liberal splash of your favourite thinner can now be added. I find that Humbrol enamel thinners are of a uniformly excellent quality.

To add some sun-fading effects, I will add some contrasting light and dark vertical streaks to the hull sides and top. This is where the model starts to come to life. Humbrol enamel #117 was used, with a small bit of Winsor & Newton #40 Titanium White. The same mix was used to add some restrained ‘negative chipping’.

Pigment powders were used to add some light dirt/dust deposits on the model’s surfaces. Obviously the wheels and lower areas get a heavier treatment.

A 3mm ‘MV’ brand lens was glued into the pre-drilled headlamp. These lenses give great realism for low cost, a real good deal.

The pry-bar was given a rub with powdered graphite which simulates bare metal better than any paint can.

The axe was picked out in Humbrol enamels, with pigments used to add some subtle shading.

Again, Humbrol enamels and powders were used to add colour to the stowage ‘bundle’, as well as the spare wheel.

To finish off the turret interior, the machine gun was picked out in enamel Matt Black Humbrol, with some light dry-brushing in enamel Chrome Silver, darkened with Umber oil. The seat’s pad was also painted with Humbrol enamel.

moveable exterior shroud to the paddle, whereas the GE YF120 had a fixed shroud. As with the F-22 that subsequently entered service, the F-23 would have carried its weapons internally in a large, under-fuselage weapons bay. Initially, the plan was to carry AIM-120 AMRAAMs and AIM-9 Sidewinders, pallets that dropped from the bays – angled to ensure clearance – being used to facilitate launch of these weapons. No doubt development would have cleared further weapons, much as it did during the F-22 programme, and so its fun to speculate just how this aircraft would have appeared and been armed, had it entered service with the USAF. There is no doubt that this was a fantastic design that offered astonishing performance; certainly the chief test pilot Paul Metz was impressed by it, concluding that it flew

every bit as good as it looked – and let’s face it, it looks very good indeed! Even today, much of the data associated with the YF-23’s two prototype aircraft – PAV-1 and PAV-2 – remains classified, especially performance data. The Lockheed team quoted that the PAV-2 aircraft had flown well in excess of Mach 1 under dry thrust – ie;. without afterburner later quoting that in actual fact, the aircraft had flown considerably faster than that, but when pushed, declined to reveal just how much faster. As with its final configuration, weapons and other interesting details, one can only speculate as to the performance of this ‘rocket ship’. One things for sure though, it’s enduring legacy is that even now, twenty years on, we are still talking about two aircraft that lost a competition, but still remain arguably the ultimate example of aviation design and technology.

The HB kit is well packaged – par for the course from this manufacturer.

IN MINIATURE

Fans of this aircraft, myself included, have wanted a 1:48 kit of this aircraft for a long time and though available in resin, the inherent construction problems associated with that medium along with the cost, has precluded many from adding this aircraft to their quarter-inch scale collections. Thanks must go out to Hobbyboss for filling that gap – but was it worth the wait? Let’s take a look shall we? This is a typical Hobbyboss kit; well packaged, nicely moulded with finely rendered details. The simplicity of the aircraft’s shape, at least superficially and an obvious need to keep costs down, seems to have forced HB to simplify the kit and so anyone hoping that they are going to receive a match for Hasegawa’s F-22 Raptor, will be disappointed. What you do get are the basics to build an impressive replica of this aircraft that will allow further details to be added with little additional expense. For instance, there are enough images available to allow the opening of the weapons bays and the creation of the weapons rails and missiles. The control surfaces around the wings could be cut-way and deflected, the cockpit detailed further (especially the insides of the canopy which are very bare!) and the jet-pipes made somewhat more accurate and complete than offered in the box. Add the option to either build a true prototype or have fun with a ‘What-If’ and you have the basis for a fun project over the coming months.

offer. I appreciate that the real aircraft was smooth, but a little extra detail here and there would not have gone amiss, even perhaps having panel lines that were a little deeper so that they stood up to some of the sanding and filling that needed to be carried out during the build. This is particularly noteworthy around the upper fuselage and outer wing panels where the need to create a virtually flawless shape, necessitated repeated runs with filler, Mr Surfacer, wet ‘n dry and sanding sticks, the results being the almost complete removal of those delicate panel lines. The instructions and decals are well produced and though as we’ll see later, the decals are pure fiction, at least allow the enthusiast to build what may have been a representative aircraft. Care needs to be taken during assembly and especially when following the instructions; I do wish that kit designers and the draftsmen that create the instruction sheets, would actually build the kit before drawing them up, because

The fuselage halves are huge!

GOOD IN PARTS

Inspection of the kit parts reveals what seems to be a curate’s egg. The smaller items such as the cockpit and undercarriage bays are really nicely detailed (despite being a little imagineered in places) and look good once painted, whereas the airframe is rather plain with only very basic panel line detail, on

Main wheels look good; subtle flat-spots will complete the look.

Canopy is well moulded with frosted framework; clear portions are flawless.

V if they did a little more

often, they would produce a more sensible approach to the building and painting of their kits! This one is spoiled by the direction to add all of the undercarriage parts to the fuselage before fixing the upper fuselage and the outer wings in place! Now I’m all for having faith in your product, but that’s bordering on the absurd. The design of the kit is such that you may need to fix the nose leg in place (I didn’t, a little trimming of the location pegs allowing it to slip into place after final painting and weathering), but that is certainly not the case with the main U/C bays and their legs. Read the instructions and plan a more sensible route; trust me, it will be time well spent.

Upon opening the box, the first thing that draws your attention, are the two huge fuselage halves. This is one enormous aircraft and that’s reflected in the size of those pieces, dwarfing even the equally impressive Raptor in this scale. As mentioned earlier, the panel detail may need to be protected and so care needs to be taken when joining the outer wing panels to the fuselage. I decided early on that I would not join the upper and lower halves of the wings first, but would rather join the upper panels to the upper fuselage and then the lower sections. This way I could line up the joints almost perfectly and

The cockpit builds easily and looks neat once complete. There’s a lot of space behind that seat maybe enough for some extra detailing and cables?

Painting a cockpit is always fun and this one, was no different. Gunze Sangyo and Vallejo acrylics were used to great effect here.

The seat is missing some of its lap straps so these were taken from an old set of Eduard etched details.

From the same set that supplied the seat straps, I managed to find some pre-printed cockpit placards so these were used around the interior to add a further layer of detail and colour.

An oxygen hose was fashioned from lead and copper wire and then painted dark green. A little drybrushing brought out the detail on this part and also around the rest of the cockpit.

The cockpit looks sharp once fixed in place.

then apply the cement, thus reducing the need for too much filling and sanding. Good in theory, I still had some to do, but I’m confident that this was a still a better route to take than gluing the wings together and then the fuselage, before joining them.

OUTLINE ACCURACY?

Shape-wise, there are problems. The YF-23 was an extraordinarily delicate shape that flowed like water, with very little evidence of sharp edges. In this kit, though that’s apparent to a degree, the fuselage looks a little heavy, the rear of the nose where it blends in with the rear fuselage and those humped engine nacelles, looking two large and not curved enough in both profile and plan view. Also, the front edge of the nacelles have two odd depressions that look almost like thumb-prints. In my initial assessment of this kit I speculated that these were not on the real aircraft, but now I’m not so sure. Checking through my reference images it would appear that the fuselage does change shape in this area, and so these depression may well be okay, if not a little exaggerated. Certainly, I was happy to leave them be and felt that the damage done to the model far outweighed the resulting finesse, the work would achieve.

INTO THE OFFICE

Shape problems aside, the overall impression is still very much that we have a 1:48 YF-23 and so I was still

happy to look at the smaller details. Let’s begin with the cockpit. This features complete instrument panel and side console details and a well-moulded ACES II seat, that oddly features shoulder straps, but none for the pilot’s lap! You could add some extra detail, but I found that careful painting was more than enough to create a more than acceptable appearance. The instructions are fairly explicit with their painting instructions and so I followed those in the main, spraying the main components – tub, panels, seat and electronics boxes – with Gunze Sangyo acrylics, Dark Gull Gray, Black, Khaki Green, etc., before detailing the results with Vallejo acrylics. Some additional lap-straps and an oxygen hose made from a length of lead wire bound with fine copper wire and painted green, completed the cockpit. The nose undercarriage bay sits under the cockpit and as can be seen in the accompanying pictures, is well-detailed and fun to build. As with the main bays, this one was assembled and then sprayed with several layers of Humbrol’s excellent Gloss White enamel. I love this paint! Though thick in the tin, it thins beautifully with Humbrol’s Enamel Thinners and sprays extremely well to produce a lovely smooth finish.

The jet ‘pipes’ were primed with Tamiya Fine Surface Primer and then oversprayed with Alclad II Steel.

Multiple shades of Alclad II were sprayed around the jet pipes to bring out the detail and create a more complex impression. This is how the pipes look for the P&W powered aircraft with the additional shrouds…

…and here’s how they look with the shrouds in place. Should you not use them, their mounting holes need to be filled and sanded smooth.

Tamiya masking tape was used to carefully mask off the delicate Alclad finish, both from the subsequent painting and also, careless handling.

The nose-wheel bay has been assembled ready to be painted gloss white. Note the level of detail.

The main wheel bays are really nicely detailed, benefitting from careful painting and weathering to bring out the delicate detail.

As with the bays, the undercarriage doors are well detailed and look good under paint. Given the levels of detail here, it’s interesting to speculate of how nice a weapons bay would have been!

One of the painted undercarriage bays shows off for the camera. Note the line of red filler along the joint between the wing and fuselage.

looks very impressive and sturdy enough to hold the weight of this large aircraft model. I actually assembled these at the same time as the bays and then painted them with the same Gloss White, leaving them to dry before ‘weathering’ each one with a carefully applied layer of Humbrol German Grey, heavily thinned with Mig’s ‘Thinner For Washes’. A cotton bud moistened with some Odourless Turpentine removed the excess to create a neatly shaded finish. The wheels were treated in the same way, the tyres being hand-painted with Vallejo Dark Rubber before being oversprayed with Tamiya Tyre Black to impart a little weathering. Other than the need to carefully plan assembly, the construction of the kit is in the main, fairly painless. The fit of the parts is very good and only a modicum of filler is needed to smooth out the larger pieces. Though it seems as though I’m labouring this point, it is worth mentioning just how smooth the shape of the YF-23 was and so the joints need to be almost invisible. Here, I assembled the model with Gunze Sangyo’s excellent Mr Cement S and then very carefully filled any gaps with 3M surface filler. This is an automotive finishing material that is ultra-smooth and dries very quickly and is thus perfect

A lot of time was spent carefully masking off the cockpit opening and canopy. This is such an important step and well worth taking time over for the best results.

for this type of delicate work. Once happy that the model was assembled and cleaned up as well as possible, the cockpit and undercarriage openings were masked with Tamiya masking tape and then the whole airframe sprayed with several layers of Tamiya’s Super Fine Primer. A final check, a little sanding here and there and the model was ready to paint.

It was decided to paint the model in the colours of PAV-1, Caracal’s decals being used to help achieve this aim. www.caracalmodels.com

The model was painted using Gunze Sangyo’s range of acrylics, multiple shades of grey being used to replicate the used appearance of the real aircraft. Clean, it was not!

PAINTING AND WEATHERING

Finally, we come to the colour schemes and the decals. The kit supplies decals for only one aircraft, a generic Langley-based F-23, completely ignoring the fact that the production aircraft would most likely have been different to the prototypes and that two perfectly acceptable schemes for PAV-1 and PAV-2 would have made better choices! Given that I just can’t bring myself to build a ‘What If’ – especially when it’s based on one of my favourite aircraft – I decided to wait and see if other decals would become available, especially for the prototypes. Thankfully, my prayers were answered when Caracal announced that they would be producing a limited-edition sheet (300 copies) that would allow the modeller to build both the overall Gunship Gray PAV-1 aircraft and ‘Grey Ghost’ the Compass Gray finished, PAV-2.

Tamiya’s X-22 Clear, thinned with Mr Color lacquer thinner, is my favourite gloss varnish and was used to great effect on this model.

The decals went on flawlessly, absolutely no evidence of silvering being apparent once they had dried out.

30/01/2014 14:36

Order placed, I waited with baited breath for the decals to arrive, being delighted once they did to see the high quality design and printing that Caracal had managed to achieve. It was now time to paint the beast! From the off, I knew that I wanted to build PAV-1 and so grabbed a few bottles of Gunze Sangyo Gunship Gray and some of their Mr Color lacquer thinners, mixed up enough to cover the model and sprayed it over the entire airframe using my trusty Iwata airbrush. Once happy that I had an even coverage, the model was left to dry and then gently buffed with some Micro Mesh to smooth things out. The real aircraft, though a prototype, certainly looked used in the reference shots and so I mixed some lighter and darker shades of grey and randomly sprayed them over the surface of the model, taking care to ensure that the effect was as random as possible. Panels were then masked off and sprayed with alternate, lighter or darker shades once again avoiding a symmetrical finish. There was no real plan involved here; I simply carried on until I was happy with the final finish, scruffy rather than arty being the goal!

DECALLING TIME

Having left the paintwork to dry for a couple of days, it was over-coated with a couple of layers of Tamiya X-22 clear ready for the decals. These were a pleasure to apply, Daco’s setting solutions being used to help them settle into the panel line detail where appropriate. Another layer of X-22 followed by several coats of Vallejo Flat Varnish - thinned with de-ionised water – levelled everything out and created a nice even finish. Though the bulk of the weathering had already been applied during the airbrushing phase a little more was added here and there using some carefully applied washes of Raw Umber oils and Humbrol enamels, both heavily thinned with Mig’s Thinner For Washes. I also masked off the control surfaces and oversprayed their edges with a thin mix of Tamiya Smoke and Mr Color Thinner to add a little definition. This colour was also used around the airframe to create the illusion of dirt streaking, structural elements and general wear and tear.

U

The paintwork and decals were unified with several layers of Vallejo Flat Varnish, the results being seen here.

The YF-23 was given the unofficial name of ‘Black Widow’ following the application of an ‘hourglass’ marking to the underside of the aircraft that looked like that found on a Black Widow spider. Images of this marking certainly captured the imagination of the public, but not those at Northrop/MDD who quickly ordered its removal from the aircraft. The marking disappeared, the name seems to have stuck…

ASSEMBLY V FINAL All the remained was to

fix the undercarriage in place and deal with the large clamshell canopy. The canopy is beautifully moulded and though it could benefit from some additional detail, is certainly a fine way to complete the model. The instructions only suggest that you fix the canopy in the closed position, but I elected to have it open, a small ram from the spares’ box and a dab of 5-minute epoxy, being the weapons of choice to enable this to be so.

Close-up views of the canopy show the saw-tooth edge at the hinge, all part of the stealth technology.

CONCLUSION

Though this is a somewhat flawed kit from Hobbyboss, it is the only game in town and thanks to the size of the model, the quality of the detail and the ease of assembly, still offers a very pleasing, fun project to enjoy. It was disappointing to see the lack of prototype markings in the kit, but hopefully, the appearance of the Caracal sheet will allow those that wish to do so, the chance to build one or other prototypes – or both! – so all is not lost. I really enjoyed building this kit and have every intention of building the ‘Grey Ghost’ PAV-2 at some point in the future - well, it’s too gorgeous not to... ●

Engine covers feature fine louvres and raised hinge detail.

JUST ENOUGH TO GET THE JOB DONE!

P

re-WWII, Russian truck manufacturers had been producing a cargo truck under license from US manufacturers. Their truck design was evolving into a very capable machine, although fairly complicated to build. When WWII began, the Russians needed to find a way to make these trucks

easier and cheaper to build thus getting them into service quickly. The answer was to either eliminate or simplify elements, resulting in the subject of this new kit by Tamiya. This model is another kit that has a world of possibilities for dioramas. It comes with two sprues in dark green and one clear plastic that make up the truck and three sprues of grey plastic for the figures and the arms, packs and such. That sprue is from one of Tamiya’s figure sets but the figures are new to this kit; more on that later. The truck build seems to be a simple process. The chassis and front fenders are a one-piece element making alignment trouble free. There are a total of seven steps to the truck but that makes it sound more complicated than it really is. If you don’t want to put the driver figure in the cab, you may want to add foot pedals, as none are included. The

canvas side cab panels and canvas roof are well shaped but you might want to add some wrinkles, which can be added fairly easily done with a curved blade and some patience. As for the wood grain in the truck bed, it is well rendered and delicate. You get two sprues of figures for the truck bed. It seems that the torsos and legs are identical for two of the figures that sit on the floor and the two that sit on boxes. It’s the arms and heads that make them appear as if there are four completely different figures. Combine that with a different gun and pack set up for each and it really works! ● MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:48 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:6 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLSTFB FAT BOY LO ● KIT NO.16041

Number plates for various nations are included on the decal sheet.

HARLEY'S TREAT It has been quite a few years since Tamiya released an all-new motorcycle kit in 1:6, but with the new Harley-Davidson FLSTFB Fat Boy Lo, we have an extraordinarily detailed production of this imposing machine. TMMI's Editor describes what's in the box...

H

arley-Davidson is an iconic American brand with a world-wide following and their bikes have a distinctive look and sound. Tamiya have used all the model kit technology at their disposal to create this wonderful new model, capturing the slightly menacing look of this nearly all-black machine, which, of course can be painted in other colours should you wish. The biggest departure in this kit from earlier bike models in the 'Big Scale' line is its engine. A conventional, injection-moulded model of an air-cooled engine will often involve a join-line running up through the cooling fins in the cylinder, slightly spoiling the effect. In this kit, Tamiya have addressed the issue by having the cylinder heads build up from a stack of individual layers on a central column, each one being slightly different from the next to achieve the correct profile. It's a painstaking approach and one that needs a patient, methodical build-up, but the final result is stunning and well worth the extra time involved in assembly. With the cylinder head fins moulded individually, it's also easier to neatly paint the exposed aluminium edges to each matt black layer. The tyres in this kit are huge! They are 'semi-pneumatic'

which means they are hollow and keep their shape via the natural elasticity of the synthetic rubber, although with the not-inconsiderable weight of the finished model, they will deform a little too much, so lengths of foam-rubber are supplied to squeeze inside the tyres to give them a little more rigidity, a thoughtful inclusion. Two types of metallic plating are used in this kit; satin-effect for the wheels, gearbox case, front-fork bodies, exhaust parts and more plus a super-shiny, slightly darkened 'chrome' for the headlight, exhaust downpipes, engine pushrods, brake lever and more. No true Harley would be without its drive belt and a real-looking one is included – so real, it looks like it could actually work. In fact, it might just be a real drive-belt of the type used in small power tools; perfect. The seat of this bike is very large and prominent and it's represented in the kit with an exquisite moulding in flexible black polyethylene which gives it a degree of 'give'. The real bike's seat would be leather of course, featuring different grains on its various stitched panels. The kit's designers have taken this fact into account and have incorporated subtly varied textures

Tamiya Harley-Davidson are back! To keep the Fat Boy Lo company, Tamiya have re-issued four classic kits of different styles of Harley. There are many more fabulous things to explore in this kit and for anyone who fancies a journey into the world of Harley-Davidson in miniature, this must be the ultimate model kit – and while it is complex, the construction sequence has been designed by Tamiya to be as trouble free and enjoyable as possible. ● Tamiya 1:6 Harley-Davidson FLSTFB Fat Boy Lo features; • Workable front fork suspension • Workable rear suspension • Layered engine cylinder heads • Red and orange clear parts for brake and indicator lenses • Number plates for UK, Japan, USA, Germany, France, Spain, Italy • Flexible brake and clutch lines MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1:6 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .IM, CP, SVT, WS TMMI’S OPINION? A stunning model from top to bottom with some serious attention to detail and classic touches of Tamiya sophistication. Before you begin your kit, do an internet search for ‘Harley-Davidson FLSTFB Fat Boy Lo colours’ to see what other shades it can be painted, if you don’t fancy the standard satin black.

‘Body’ parts for the Harley are moulded in luscious, gloss black plastic that, at a push, could be polished and left unpainted. For a truly convincing finish though, you’ll need to prime and paint all the parts in your chosen colour; black is recommended but you could go with burnt orange...

The tyres are hollow and foam strips are supplied to give them a little internal rigidity. The Harley-Davidson name appears on the sidewalls.

The soft vinyl sprue also carries the fuel-tank apron, foot-rest matts handlebar grips and other ‘leather’ and ‘rubber’ items.

The bike’s characteristic drivebelt is provided of course, and it appears to be an actual drivebelt, complete with manufacturer’s code-number!

The flexible vinyl seat is fantastic; note the change of ‘leather’ grain texture between the different panels and the realistic stitching.

There are plenty of metal parts in this kit, including a set of miniature box-spanners and a solid metal handlebars complete with knurled areas.

Rear lights and indicator lenses are moulded in red and orange plastic, a great help to the modeller and much more realistic than having to paint the parts.

Two types of metal plating will be found in the kit; satin for the mechanical parts and wheels, plus bright chrome for exhaust pipes and headlight.

The engine’s cylinder heads build up layer by layer to create a highly realistic result; the instructions show the precise assembly sequence.

Internal packaging, showing metal parts, screws and more. To display the model with the stand retracted, a sturdy cast-metal base it provided.

Tamiya 1:6 Harley-Davidson FLSTFB Fat Boy Lo Detail Up Parts Set (12655) Tamiya have released a detail upgrade set to go with the Fat Boy Lo, consisting of a pair of very stout exhaust boxes in metal, a pair of replacement front brake rotors in machined metal and photo-etched data plates, straps for the exhausts and Harley-Davidson emblems for the die-cast metal display base (shown left). All of these parts are very welcome but the stand-outs are the new brake discs which outclass the plated plastic items and will really give an extra sparkle to the model. TMMI 221 March 2014

WÜRTH

n late July 1978, a car appeared which will remain in the history of endurance motorsport as one of the most spectacular racing cars of all time; the Zakspeed Ford Capri. It resulted from the pairing-up of Ford and the Zakspeed team of Erich Zakowoski to replace the ageing Escort Group 5s and to counter the BMW offensive in the under two-litre class. This car was designed under the

direction of engineer Thomas Ammerschläger – already responsible for the touring car programme – for the initial plans and drawings. The development and construction was entrusted to Zakspeed, led by Helmut Barth (chief engineer) and Bruno Bunk (expert welder). Developed on the basis of the Group 5, Series-3 Capri, the car had a space-frame chassis made up from eighty metres of tubing weighing

sixty-four kilograms, with sheet-metal and Kevlar body panels. Wind tunnel studies were conducted to optimise aerodynamics, crucial in the search for performance. For the engine, Zakspeed opted for a cast iron block BDA 1.4 litre engine with a sixteen-valve, alloy cylinder head with double overhead camshafts manufactured by Cosworth. Equipped with a turbocharger (1.5 bar) the four-cylinder engine

developed 380hp. Engaged in the German DRM (Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft) Ford Championship, the Zakspeed Capri showed itself to be very promising by winning the final race of the 1978 season at the Nürburgring and it lived up to this promise by dominating its class in 1979. In 1981, three Capris ran in Division 2, one wearing the livery of the German auto-parts manufacturer

'WĂźrth', its main sponsor. The Zakspeed Ford Capri Turbo driven by K. Ludwig won ten of the thirteen races of that season.

THE CAPRI RETURNS

The Capri Group 5 is one of the first cars in 1:24 by Tamiya. Originally released with the kit number '24014' in 1979, it was powered by a small electric motor and the front wheels could be steered

through a rack system. The engine of the car (the real one) was not included, the interior was limited and ultimately the number of parts was reduced. The chassis included mouldings for the electric motor and battery locations and openings for the drive system of the rear axle. You would therefore think that this was a toy, but it is not. Externally, the shapes

and sizes are faithfully observed and details are presented with the usual Tamiya precision mouldings. Chrome rims, tyres in soft vinyl and transparent tail-lights all contribute to the overall realism. A driver figure sitting at the wheel is provided; it was needed for a motorised model! This re-issue features new decals to depict the WĂźrth car of K. Ludwig in the 1981 DRM

Championship. I decided to use the Studio27 set of photo-etched parts designed for the original Tamiya Capri, which do improve some parts of the model.

BODY PAINTING

abrasive paper, I glued in the supports for the rear wing spoiler so they were pre-assembled and ready to be painted. For perfect alignment of this assembly, I secured the parts with Tamiya masking tape while applying glue. The gaps were then filled with Tamiya Light Curing Putty. This material is very easy to use and hardens in one minute under use an ultraviolet light, which enables a very fast construction work. For those in a hurry who have not tried it yet, I urge you to do so! I also cut out the moulded front grille with my X-Acto knife in readiness for the Studio27 photo-etched part. This set also includes various fine parts such

as windscreen wiper, body-clips, pedals, air vents and the 'spoked' wheel rims. The operation to remove the grille is very simple, so long as you work carefully to avoid injury. Once done, the body was washed and degreased in a bath of detergent and then rinsed with clean water. After complete drying, I applied two coats of Tamiya White Primer. Twelve hours later, having found no dust or blemishes, I applied two coats of Tamiya TS-26 Matt White and then let it dry at room temperature for forty-eight hours. I then sanded the entire body with fine-grit sandpaper before applying a first layer of Mr Hobby gloss in anticipation of decal application.

BODY MARKINGS

I decided to first apply the stripes on the front wing, followed by the side-stripes in order to accurately centre the sponsors' logos. After a short dip in water, the stripes tended to tear when applied to the model, which foreshadowed a session of hand-to-hand combat with the rest of the markings...

Rear wing uprights were cemented before the body was painted.

Front grille removed to make way for the PE item from Studio 27.

The Zakspeed’s bodyshell was moulded in black plastic in the original 1970s release but is now white, a more user-friendly shade.

The bodyshell has been decalled and the details painted; now it’s time to mount it on the chassis.

The interior floor, showing the location of the battery box for the motorised original release.

All decals were affixed with plenty of water to allow them to easily slip around until in the right position, taking great care to remove excess water very gently with Q-Tips. This takes a while, but it's the best way. After four hours of decalling, I came to the end of these recalcitrant transfers without only a few tears shed. Any gaps where the decals tore were filled by retouching with Tamiya X-7 Red and X-18 Semi-Gloss Black. I let it all dry for twenty-four hours before washing the body again prior to applying the varnish. Two layers were necessary to achieve The addition of Studio27’s harness adds realism to the rather spartan cabin.

the desired gloss. After forty-eight hours of drying, a smooth finish was obtained by a slight 'compounding' (a rub with cutting compound). Subtle colour-washes were applied in the hollows and surrounds of the windows to deepen the detail. The cockpit is quite simple, consisting of the bucket seat, dashboard and not a lot else. It's so minimalist in fact that the pedals are missing, as well as electrical boxes and other typical instrumentation you'd find in the cockpit of a racing car. According to some pictures gleaned from the net, they were originally painted black inside (X-18). The seat was painted matt

Although basic, the front-end doesn’t look bad at all with some selective paint work.

The grille and wiper will be found on Studio27’s useful photo-etched nickel-steel set and add a lot to the model. Studio27’s PE set also provides footpedals, missing in the kit.

harness was first formed directly on the seat and then painted XF-7 Flat Red. The pedals were represented by parts from the Studio27 photo-etched set, as well as the and the footrest. The chassis is also minimal since the wishbones and rear suspension are absent, the result of the electric motor installation from the original kit. The rear wheels are mounted on a metal shaft, also a remnant of the original powerplant. When I said simple... Only at the front is the suspension represented – but there are no brake callipers or rotors – but these would be invisible once the rims were in place anyway. I followed the instructions to paint the chassis, namely the frame in X-18, the lower engine parts and exhaust in XF-16 Flat Aluminium and the turbo plumbing in XF-56 Metallic Grey. The assembly of the body to the chassis is through a simple click on the front and rear. The peg was slightly shortened in order to fix the new photo-etched grille. This was followed by headlights, tail-lights, mirrors, wiper and photo-etched hood fasteners. In conclusion, this is a very simple kit to build but a well detailed one nonetheless. I would have preferred more robust decals that would have saved me much sweat during application, but this is a very minor worry compared to the finished model and rekindled memories... ●

The underside is simple but still effective considering the model’s motorised origins.

AXEL URBANKE, HANS BECKER, LUFTFAHRVERLAG START ISBN 978-3-941437-19-7 • www.luftfahrtverlag-start.de • www.aviationbookcentre.com This German publisher is best known its excellent books on Luftwaffe subjects and, more recently, WW2 U-boats. Pretty much every photo that appears in their books is previously unpublished, making them a real treasure-trove of reference material and at TMMI, we look forward to every one of their new productions. This new hardback is their second only title on the German army (Endkampf was the first) and I seem to remember eulogising over it when it came out. Well, brace yourself for more eulogising over this new release, as it is one of the most interesting books I've seen in a long time. It's the first in a series by the publisher that is based on the photos shot by individual soldiers, rather than from official 'PK' (Propagandakompanie) sources and as such, provides a very personal insight into the events of the time. This first, 250+ page edition focuses on the photos of Hans Becker. He was attached to the headquarters of the 8th Panzer-Regiment in Africa from 1942 to 1943 and created extensive photographic journals of the military operations in the region. After being wounded, he returned to Germany and once recovered, joined the 508th Heavy Panzer Battalion when it was forming up. He ended up photographing the Battalion's Tigers in Italy during 1944 and 1945 and his work was of an outstanding quality, as can be clearly seen in this book. A variety of subjects are covered, including the Bv222 flying-boat in which he flew to Tobruk plus medevac Fieseler Storch, before he moves on to shooting the tanks and soldiers of the Afrikakorps and fantastic quality images they are too. Masses of modelling reference and inspiration can be had from these images alone (PzIIs, PzIIIs, captured British trucks, a Stuka and even a crashed SAAF Kittyhawk feature), but then we move onto Becker's 'second job' with the 508th. Here we witness Tiger I training-turrets on concrete plinths at Paderborn and complete Tigers in the mud of the training grounds prior to deployment, where the crews practised the delicate art of loading their vehicles onto railway low-loaders; the photographs here are stunningly sharp and extremely well framed. Panthers are depicted too. Then, he moves on to deployment in Italy and we are treated to equally well shot photos of the Battalion's preparations and movements in the country, where the machinery starts to take on a little more character. There are some colour photos that show the three-tone camouflage more clearly than I have ever seen before and they will make the hearts of WW2 German armour modellers flutter; completely invaluable colourreference like you've never seen before. Page upon page presents Tiger Is, Brummbärs and their support vehicles in the mud and dust of Italy, a smattering of further colour photos adding spice to the high-quality black and white images. Fantastic stuff. So, I did eulogise. But justifiably I think; this book is a marvellous production that should not be missed by those interested in the desert war, the Italian campaign and the Tiger I. Worth every single cent of the €56 asking price (plus P&P), about £46 at the time of writing. Buy with confidence from either the publisher or from the Aviation and Military Book Centre, links above. Very highly recommended. MN

CANFORA GRAFISK FORM & FÖRLAG ISBN 789197 677387 www.canfora.se www.aviationbookcentre.com New from this Swedish publisher is a book on a very welcome subject; modelling WW2 British Armour! Within its 100, soft-backed pages we are treated to seven models from a very august bunch of young modellers from across Europe, presenting a Daimler Dingo (MiniArt) diorama at Dieppe by Radek Pituch, a whitewashed Cromwell tank (Tamiya) by Andreas Grewin, a desert Valentine III Mk.II (AFV Club) by Johan Augustsson, a Scots Guards Churchill Mk.VI (AFV Club) by Javier de Luelmo, a desert Bishop 25pdr (Bronco/MiniArt) by Eelke Warrink, Humber Mk.IV armoured car (Bronco) by Jorge Lopéz and a Matilda Mk.III (Tamiya) by Murat Özgül. All kits are in 1:35 and all are built, painted and weathered to extremely high standards, making for unimpeachable modelling reference. As always from this publisher, the photographs and print reproduction are of professional standards, making the model shots extremely clear and full of detail. Highly recommended. MN

The detail on the resin castings is quite simply exquisite; the cooling gills on the cylinder heads (right) are so fine you need a close-up lens to see them and the other parts of the same high quality. Eduard seem to have got rid of most of the 'scan lines' (produced by the 3D printing process) that were present on some previous resin castings, making this a top quality production that will look breathtakingly realistic on the model. Eduard have also created a complete set of replacement M2 Browning .50cal guns (not shown) for the kit – thirteen in total – cast in resin with photoetched brass ring-sights and cocking levers; a very worthwhile purchase. The box includes a heap of resin castings that entirely replace the kit parts, each new component carrying a significantly improved level of detail to the standard parts. Particularly welcome is the multi-layer instrument panel with pre-coloured dials on PE etched parts; these look spectacularly good. A conventional instrument panel in opaque resin is included for those who prefer that approach. Sidewall detail is complete and an extensive suite of supplementary PE parts provide the trim wheel and its drive chain, seat harnesses, rudder pedals and their straps, small levers, canopy armour and more. Revell's standard cockpit is excellent but this set takes it several steps further and will give the kit a serious touch of refinement. The Editor’s Page... TEST-SHOT IMAGES OF TAMIYA’S NEW 1:35 NASHORN ‘RHINOCEROS’

Main gun tube is a solid, one-piece moulding in kit plastic.

BATTLEFIELD RHINOCEROS! Tamiya unveiled the all-new 1:35 Sd.Kfz.164 ‘Nashorn’ (narz-horn, not nash-horn!), tank destroyer at this year’s Nuremberg Toy Fair and I picked up a set of test-shot sprues of the kit from my colleagues at Tamiya. So what you see here is something of a work-in-progress with final tweaks and adjustments to be made, but it’s nearly there. In my opinion, the kit has a big advantage over other Nashorn models in its streamlined engineering and sheer buildability, without compromising on detail or accuracy. The real test will, of course, be in the building of the kit, but for now here is a selection of close-ups to whet your appetite.. More details soon!

The Nashorn’s running gear is all newly moulded for this kit, sporting some excellent detailing.

See you again on March 20th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com One side of the newly-tooled 88mm main gun.

A generous set of ammunition will be found on the kit’s sprues.

Lower hull is a highly detailed one-piece moulding.

Idler wheels sport weld seams where the spokes meet the rims.

Upper front hull features the travel-brace’s release-cable guide.

Main gun’s travel-brace is delicately moulded and moveable.

MP40 with folded stock is provided for the crew’s protection.
