RAF CHINOOK HC.2 CH-47F SUPER DECALS SHEET FOR 3 VERSIONS - COLOUR INSTRUCTIONS SHEET The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is one of the most famous heavy-lift helicopters in military aviation history. Characterised by its two-engine tandem rotor configuration (one over the cabin and one in the tail section), it was specifically developed to meet the U.S. Army’s transportation needs and to replace the obsolete H-21. The CH-47 Chinook has been manufactured in several versions and it has been in service in many countries all over the world. The CH-47C was widely used by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War to perform tactical deployment of troops and equipment. A newer variant CH-47D was developed on a more robust and reliable airframe and equipped with more powerful engines. The most significant improvements were on the electronics, flight control systems and avionics. In more recent years, new electronic countermeasure systems have been installed to further enhance operational flexibility. This version of the CH-47F replicates the version now in service with the RAF

or most of us, scale modelling is our passion and we dedicate as much time as possible to it. We become absorbed by the hobby and the model on the workbench occupies our minds throughout the day. But rarely does it lead to anything more than an engrossing pastime. Unless, of course, your name is Adrian Newey. Followers of motorsport (the full-size kind) will know him as Chief Technical Officer of the Red Bull Racing F1 team and his preternatural engineering skills have led to his cars winning no less than ten Formula 1 Championships; Williams FW14B (1992) FW15C (1993), FW16 (1994), FW18 (1996), FW19 (1997), McLaren MP4/13 (1998), Red Bull RB6 (2010), RB7 (2011), RB8 (2012) and RB9 (2013). Quite a set of achievements. But with Adrian, it was a Tamiya 1:12 Lotus 49 model that sparked his interest in race car design, when he was a young lad. He nagged his father to buy the kit for him but once he'd finished it, instead of wanting to add to his collection, he chose to modify that 1:12 Lotus into his own creation, one that improved on the Chapman chassis and suspension. That this creative process evolved from a Tamiya model is remarkable and that an entire career was built from it is a wonderful conformation that building models is a very positive thing, for young and old. During his visit Tamiya UK last December, Adrian was presented with that same kit again, and I'm sure it triggered memories of the first time he saw it, way back, as a boy. Who knew it what it would lead to? My thanks to Anthony Shaw at The Hobby Company Limited. â—?

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:35 GERMAN SLEF-PROPELLED HOWITZER WESPE ITALIAN FRONT ● KIT NO.35358
WASP UP? TMMI’s Editor describes the new parts added to Tamiya’s classic 1996 Wespe SPH kit
I
t’s amazing to think that Tamiya released the 1:35 Wespe SPH twenty-two years ago, and it’s even more amazing that I remember building it! 1996 was a great year for Tamiya kits. Now, Tamiya have injected new life into this still excellent kit, giving it a set of new, link-and-length tracks in kit plastic, replacing the original one-piece flexible items. This in itself is a significant upgrade because the Wespe’s entire upper run is on show, revealing the sagging effect. Whilst
one-piece tracks are perfect for modern tanks where the upper run is usually hidden behind armour and track guards, they are less suitable for older machines like this. Adding to the enhancements, the new edition of the kit includes four new crew figures, created with the latest technology, which gives them extremely naturalistic poses. There’s also some new internal detailing plus a sheet of decals with markings for two machines, one in plain dark yellow and one with a dark green
overspray; both are from the Italian campaign in 1944. It’s fantastic to see this superb little SPH back on sale again and with some improvements that bring it right up to 21st century standards. ● AVAILABILITY; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. HE BUG!
Wayne Hui builds Kinetic's 1:48 Hornet as a Canadian CF-188 machine and adds resin ejector seats in the process
S
ubsequent to Kinetic's F-18C kit released in 2016, they have re-boxed the sprues and added new parts to offer the F/A-18 A/B/CF-188 A/B, kit number K48030. This kit is of particular interests to modellers interested in building foreign users of the F/A-18 A/B aircraft. Although the box says it is for the A/B version, there are parts for the C/D as well. Having built three Hasegawa F-18s in the past, this was my first time building a Kinetic F-18, as such; I have a rather high expectation for this kit. Upon review of parts in the kit, I was impressed with the plethora of extra parts for the different versions of an F-18 and notable features that the Hasegawa kits do not have such as: - Separate tree for distinctive parts for a Canadian CF-188, such as correct main landing gears and vertical fins - Photo-etched canopy frame with mirrors - Full-length intake ducts down to the F404 compressor faces - Positionable air-refuelling probe - Choice of grille patterns on the two port-side LERX vents - Choice of four ventral nose-panels for early/ late-block F/A-18C with different antennae positions and vent grille patterns - Optional port-side spotlight for Canadian/Swiss interceptor - Folding wing panels - Photo-etched chaff/flare launcher faces - Full set of weapons and choices of smart bomb targeting pods

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AVIATION KINETIC 1:48 CF-188 HORNET â—? KIT NO.K48030
BUILD V THE To speed things up I decided
to build this out of the box as much as possible, starting on the cockpit. Having said this, the kit's seat is not too appealing as it has a seam running down the middle of the headrest. It is much easier to replace the kit seats with a nice set of SUJ-17 seats from Black Box. So almost out-of-the-box then... The cockpit in this kit is very nice and well detailed and really does not need to replacement with a resin set. The bulkhead and side panels in this kit are well detailed. A nice feature in this kit is the instrument panel decals. It's cheating a bit, I know, but who cares‌ The decals settled over the kit panel very nicely with Mr. Mark Softer and it sure helps in finishing the cockpit that much faster. I really like to show the CRTs live with images on it even though I know an aircraft resting on the ground would not have the CRTs live. I painted the cockpit
with Gunze H317. All black colour surfaces such as the ejection seat frame and side consoles were painted with Tamiya XF-24 Dark Grey. Seat belts were painted in Vallejo 857 Golden Olive and cushions in Tamiya XF-52 Flat Earth. Another nice feature in this kit is the full-length air intake trunks. I painted the inside surfaces of the intakes with gloss white before I glued the halves together. Then I applied putty to the foremost seams where they can be seen. I rolled up a small sheet of wet sandpaper and used this roll to sand the putty smooth and blend it into rest of the intake surfaces. After the surfaces are sanded smooth I carefully resprayed the intake at lower air pressure where I did the sanding. I think this worked out very well. I found the best way to install the intake lip and trunk assembly to the fuselage is to glue the lip and trunk together first, then slip the assembly into
The Black Box seat (out of production) is quite an improvement on the kit parts, which in themselves are very presentable
The ejector seat really comes to life once painted
A view into the cockpit tub reveals excellent detail as standard
The finished Hornet cockpit looks very neat indeed
12
May 2018 TMMI 271
Another nice feature in this kit is the full-length air intake trunks. The author painted the inside surfaces of the intakes with gloss white before gluing the halves together. Then he applied putty to the foremost seams where they can be seen
the lower fuselage after the main landing gear wells are secured. By doing it this way, one can ensure perfect alignment of the intake lip and trunk. Be sure to paint the intake lip with the final fuselage colour first before gluing it to the intake trunk so as to avoid having to tape and paint this later when it is very inconvenient to do. When done properly, intake/ trunk looks just like the real thing and they look seamless. The same kind of joint issues encountered in the Hasegawa F-18 were also apparent here in the Kinetic kit, namely the joints at the nose and at the rear fuselage. These are easy enough to fix using a sanding stick to smooth them and backfill with Tamiya putty, then follow up with re-scribing the panel lines back in. Kinetic did a good job on their research for a CF-188 and provided the correct version of landing gear, nose and fins. All this is on a separate parts-tree to distinguish it from the US version. The CF-188 nose houses a high-intensity searchlight and the kit provides this as a pre-drilled hole and a clear lens. To improve on that, I made a little housing from white styrene card stock and glued an MV lens into it and attach the housing behind the hole in the fuselage. The mould-seam running down the middle of the windshield and canopy clear parts were scraped off with a sharp blade. A gentle wet-sanding of the seam with extra fine sanding stick followed. The resulting scratches were easily removed by polishing and buffing with Tamiya polishing compound. The resulting clear parts are so
clear I did not bother to dip them into Future to enhance the clarity. The most difficult assembly is to come. The folded photo-etched HUD is intended to fit into the recessed well on top of the coaming. However, even with the proper setting of the photo-etched inside the well, the HUD is too tall and it interfered with the fit of the windshield. After several frustrating attempts to fix the problem, I simply resorted to cutting off the top bar on the HUD and that finally provided enough clearance for the windshield to sit flush. This left me with only four tiny points to attach the top HUD glass panel to. I affixed the HUD glass to the photo-etched with Future floor wax; Much patience is required here. I thought I was home free, but then I found that the front edges of the windshield would not sit flush with the mating surfaces on the nose. It is a nice attempt by Kinetic to mould the windscreen complete with a portion of the fuselage. However, the front edge of the windshield is too thick and the resulting misfit is rather prominent and unacceptable. I used an X-Acto blade and shaved the front edges thinner and then rough sanded the front and sides to conform to the fuselage nose at these joint locations. Despite this, the gaps at these joints are very noticeable. Several hours were spent repeatedly filling the gaps with putty. Here’s a tip: Do not leave the installation of the windshield to the last after painting the model; you must install the windshield and prep the joint before painting.

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AVIATION KINETIC 1:48 CF-188 HORNET ● KIT NO.K48030
V PAINTING The model was prepared
with a light coat of Mig primer, sprayed directly from the bottle without thinning. It went on smoothly with excellent coverage. A primer coat is the best way to prepare the surfaces for painting and it will show up any scratches and joint fault that should be rectified before final painting. The kit’s decal sheet provides markings for several Canadian Air Force (CAF) CF-188Bs. I chose to replicate aircraft No.188932, as I was able to find a couple of good reference photos of this aircraft on the internet. I painted the model with Model Master enamel: Model Master Medium Gray FS-35237 for the upper surfaces and Light Ghost Gray FS36375 for the undersides. This is the closest colour match for a CF-188. On this model, I wanted to simulate the mottling and dirty look of the more recent CF-18s in service. To achieve that look, I used the 'post-shading' technique to create the illusion of a worn and weathered finish. For this shading process, I used dark grey and thinned it out and sprayed fine line along each panel line and applied random splotches all over the plane to simulate wear and paint repairs. I used my Iwata HP-C for all the fine line airbrushing and the paint was highly thinned. Then, lighter shades of the base colour were applied strategically on the wings in small patches as per reference photo of this aircraft. To help blend the various shades together, I misted on a grey layer consisting of a thinned-out mix of the base colour to tie it all together. To prepare for the sealer coat of Future floor wax, I wet sanded the model with 2000 grit wet sanding paper to remove any dust and smooth out the finish. To protect the paint from the weathering and preparing a gloss finish for decalling, I sprayed the entire model with a coat of Future liquid floor wax straight out of the bottle. After letting the sealing coat dried, I applied the decals. The Cartograf transfers are excellent and
14
May 2018 TMMI 271
they set flush with Mr. Mark Softer decal solution. The large aircraft serial numbers on the top and underside of the wings for the Canadian aircraft are incorrect: The numbers are too small and the colours of the text are provided in dark grey when they should be in light grey for the top and medium grey for the bottom wing. A small supplemental decal sheet for these numbers was found in the kit but they also still suffer from having the wrong sizes and thus I cannot use them. Good thing I still have some leftover decals from Leading Edge and I was able to find some numbers to use on the wings.
AMMO ‘One Shot’ primer was used as a base coat
COLOR-WASH COAT AND WEATHERING
When I first opened the box, the finely engraved panel lines on the parts impressed me. This fine feature, however, became a challenge when I applied the Tamiya enamel wash and the wash inside the panel line would get wiped off completely during the cleaning process. My solution was to use a dabbing technique. I made applicator from a tightly rolled up paper towel and dipped the tip into the enamel thinner. Excess colour-wash was cleaned up by carefully dabbing and wiping along each side of the panel line. The dirty tip of the ‘pencil’ was dabbed onto various panels to create stains to simulate the grime accumulated by aircraft technicians working around the plane. Oil streaks on the wings and fuselage were drawn on with a fine tip brush and blending was done using a fresh wet paper towel pencil wiped along the direction of the air flow. The accumulation of grime and oil streaks were done in several phases, with each phase sealed with a light coat of Future before more enamel 'wash fluid was applied. The seal coat prevented previous work to be removed during subsequent wiping with enamel thinner. The walkways on the wing were masked off and painted with a medium dark grey. Leading Edge Decals used to sell a masking set for the Hasegawa F-18 and it provides a latex mask
Model Master greys formed the top coats

Colour washes were used to enhance the ordnance’s detail
Liquid cement was used to simulate the flame-retardant finish of the GBUs

The open canopy shows off the excellent cockpit and new resin seats
Kinetic provide a good “ selection of armament... ” for a couple of patterns of walkways on an F-18. Finally, the painting is finished with a flat coat of Model Master Acryl flat. To relieve the dead flat finish, I lightly misted a coat of Future floor wax over the model. This produced an eggshell finish that I was
aiming to achieve a realistic scale finish.
EXTERNAL ARMAMENT
I opted to load out my Canadian CF-188B for a ground air support mission. Kinetic provide a good selection of armament and I selected the nicely detailed
GBU-12 laser-guided bomb (LGB). The bomb's body was roughened up with liquid cement to simulate the fire-retardant coating. I applied a copious amount of liquid cement all over the surface to ‘melt’ the plastic. Immediately I roughen up the surfaces with a
stiff brush in a dabbing and twisting motion. To accompany the LGB, I choose the Sniper XR laser-targeting pod. This pod is typically seen on the more recent loads on NATO aircraft. I enhanced the pod by adding a lens from model trains to simulate the sensor head.

Aircraft are usually very dirty underneath, so don’t forget this step when weathering!
V CONCLUSION I congratulate Kinetic
for their engineering and manufacturing of an impressive 1:48 F-18 model kit. I cannot say this kit is a major improvement over the Hasegawa F-18 kit as it too has similar construction issues, plus a bit more. However, this Kinetic kit will likely win over many buyers as it costs much less than its competitors and all the while offering a lot more features and bonuses. As Kinetic intends to issue more re-boxing and variants, I hope they would rectify the windshield and HUD misfit issue. I would recommend this kit to intermediate and advanced builders. ●

ACHTUNG JABO! UP-DETAILING HAWKER'S MIGHTY MAULER Rene van der Hart adds some resin goodies to the Italeri 1:48 Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib
T
he striking box art of Italeri's 1:48 Typhoon – which is actually a Hasegawa rebox – was one of the reasons I wanted to build this kit, plus it is just a great-looking plane. As with most Hasegawa models, the surface detail is very nice; fine, engraved panel lines and some nice rivet detail. The canopy parts are very clear and the beautifully printed decal sheet gives you a choice of four different aircraft. For this build I used a resin engine and control surfaces made by CMK, turned aluminium gun barrels from Master, a cockpit set from Aires and a decal sheet from Aviaeology of a Typhoon with a shark-mouth painted on the nose. During the build I found out this version needed a four-bladed propeller, as the kit has a three-blader only. Ultracast came to the rescue with a resin spinner and four new prop blades. Since I needed to do some major surgery on the fuselage to install the engine, I decided to add a lot of rivets as well. This was the first job to do. With a rivet-wheel and a ruler it is quite easy to make straight lines of evenly placed rivets. Following the curves on the fuselage is a bit more challenging. If found that using thick plastic tape as a guide works quite well. After adding all rivets you need to sand the whole surface flat and once again go over all rivets with the rivet wheel to clear all the tiny holes. Because Hasegawa makes different versions of the Typhoon, you need to put an insert behind the cockpit on both halves of the fuselage. Here I noticed that, when I glued the inserts in place, a gap remains where the two inserts meet on the spine. A piece of plastic strip and some filler takes care of this. Later during the build the same fix is needed when gluing the wings to the fuselage. A strip of plastic of 0.5mm was glued on the wing roots before installing them.

For this build the author used a resin Napier engine made by CMK

RESIN CONTROL V ADDING SURFACES
Cutting out the CMK flaps and replacing them with the resin parts is a fairly easy job; the parts-fit is very good and they just drop in place. When the wing halves were glued together and had fully dried, I cut off the moulded-on guns and drilled new holes for the aluminium barrels. The Aires cockpit is beautifully detailed but unfortunately, you won't see much of it after the fuselage is closed up. Painting was done with Alclad RAF Interior Green over black primer and a colour-wash/ light drybrushing is all that's needed to make the

details pop out. Small areas were brush-painted. The beautifully cast and highly detailed resin engine was painted with a base coat of Alclad black primer which I also used as the base paint coat as the real engine was black as well. All details were brush-painted with Vallejo paints. Some careful cutting, filing, sanding and filling is needed to make the resin parts like the firewall and base plate for the engine fit into the fuselage. After all preparation for the resin parts was done, the rest of the build was pretty straightforward and preparation for paint could begin. All seams were

checked and the whole surface lightly sanded before primer went on. I used Alclad Black Primer with microfiller as a base for all my paint jobs. The black surface allows you to slowly build up the paints in various shades depending on the thickness of the paint airbrushed on the surface. This way you can vary in shades with just one colour. For this job I used Alclad's ready for the airbrush enamel range. I found them easy to use, offering fine pigments and a smooth finish. After all colours were on, a coat of Aquagloss sealed it all off for the next job; painting the roundels, applying the decals and a colour-wash. I decided to paint the roundels instead of using the decals, as I think this looks more realistic and you don't lose any surface detail. I used a dark 'wash from Mig Productions to enhance all rivets and panel lines.

The decals from Aviaeology are a bit thick and stiff and I didn't dare to use the shark mouth decals over the complex curves; cutting out tape with a sharp knife and airbrushing the red mouth over a white base was a tedious job but worth all the work that went into it. The landing gear legs were detailed with brake lines, painted and glued into the wheel wells. The tyres were painted black and weathered with a light brown wash. The whole
landing gear assemblies were lightly weathered with brown pastel powder to simulate dust thrown up during take off and landing. Highly diluted black paint was lightly airbrushed near the engine exhaust and gun barrels to simulate smoke residue. I truly enjoyed this build despite the poor fitting of the wings and fuselage inserts in the kit and making the resin parts fit. This is certainly not a job for a novice modeller to take on but definitely worth all the effort for the advanced modeller. â—?
The propeller fits perfectly to the engine spindle and looks resplendent in deep blue
Weathering the airframe adds an air of realism, but the effect was kept subtle
The huge Napier Sabre engine looks fantastic in place and fitting it was well worth the effort

TAMIYA MODEL HEAVEN IN CENTRAL TOKYO! TMMI’s Editor visits the Tamiya Plamodel Factory-Shimbashi and leaves in a state of awe
I
f you find yourself in Tokyo and fancy spending some time in a scale modelling Aladdin's cave, hop on the subway and head to the Shimbashi area in the centre of the city. Here, you will be surrounded by all of Tamiya's current products plus a few classics too. The Tamiya Plamodel Factory Shimbashi is Tamiya's very own factory outlet and showcase store and is spread across two floors, housing and stock approximately 6,000 Tamiya items. The

basement and ground levels showcase approximately 1,000 scale models and products, 1,500 radio control products, 1,000 Mini 4WDs and Educational Construction Series products, 500 tools, paints and publications, as well as other special products and Original Goods sometimes only found at the Plamodel Factory store. It's also a great opportunity to pick up the occasional Plamodel exclusive rare item. If you happen to be visiting at the right time
of year you may even see Mr. Tamiya bring in a yet to be officially announced product! Back in 2016 I had the chance to visit the store again (my first visit was six years earlier with a certain Mr Brett Green) and I was equally amazed on my second trip. There is so much in the shop that you'll need at least an hour, just to soak it all in. A wonderful experience and an absolute must-see if you're in Tokyo. â—?

FULL-BUILD: FORMULA ONE TAMIYA 1:20 FERRARI SF70H ● KIT NO.20068
FORZA FERRARI
PT.1
TMMI's Editor starts work on Tamiya's new 1:20 Ferrari SF70H
B
ack in the March issue (TMMI 269) we featured a two-page 'Kit Preview' of Tamiya's new 1:20 Ferrari SF70H, the Vettel/ Räikkönen car from last year's Formula 1 season. You will have noticed that I had already begun construction on the model; new F1 cars from Tamiya are quite rare these days and they are more time-sensitive than perhaps a new military vehicle – for the obvious reasons – and I wanted to get it in the magazine quickly. I happily started fitting the model together and even though I hadn't built an F1 car kit for several years, I just knew I was up for the challenge. Of course I was, it's just overall red isn't it? How easy is that? In the time since my last F1 car project, one element of design has developed significantly; aero. And the SF70H
30
May 2018 TMMI 271
has loads of it. Tamiya have done a magnificent job of reproducing the complex curves of the aerodynamic components and considering their often awkward placement and small contact areas, it all fits together remarkably well. If they were all to be painted plain red, assembly and painting would be a relative breeze, but thanks to many of the parts having black and/or carbon-fibre reverse sides, much of the car's body must be built and finished part-by-part, then brought together towards the end of the project. If done methodically, this isn't a major problem, but it does slow one's work rate right down, hence this being 'part one' of another two part article in TMMI, something I wanted to avoid. But, time being a precious commodity, this is where I am with the build.
The model kicks off with the forward fuselage and here the instructions suggest painting the interior black and fitting the cockpit frame (C6) at this stage. I chose to ignore this and push ahead with getting as much of the bodywork together as I could to ease the painting processes. Therefore I ended up building the entire fuselage and even fixing the engine cover (there's no engine underneath it in this kit) to minimise the chances of the cowling not sitting down onto the floorpan. I am not sure if I recommend doing this – the instructions certainly do not – but I was committed by this stage. Working this way did mean I could deal with the inevitable cement lines around the nose, cockpit, air intake and underside of the car where the various structural elements come together. Join-lines are inevitable
The fit between the cowling halves is perfect, but a cement line will be formed where they meet
The engine cover is moulded in two halves, support at the top by just this small block in black polystyrene
The rear bodywork was temporarily screwed in place to avoid cracking the joint during handling
Tamiya provide glue-on bases within the mouldings to allow the engine cover to be screwed firmly to the floorpan
when complex curves have to be mated to each other and it's not an fault of Tamiya's designers, but I did use some filler here to perfect the finish. The engine cowling features the massive 'love it/hate' it fin seen on most current F1 cars and it must be a real pain for model kit designers to choose where to divide the parts. In the case of the SF70H, the whole engine cover is split longitudinally with the fin being a solid part of the left side. Only a small block supports the two cowling halves and I was worried about splitting the halves apart during handling, so I decided to temporarily mount the cover to the floorpan via the four micro-screws to keep things sturdy. Even with great care, I managed to create a slightly gluey cement line along the base of the fin on the right side which needed filling of course.
Using the brilliantly convenient Holts Cataloy Knifing Putty (from the Halfords chain of car parts stores, for our UK readers) I was able to form a smooth transition along the whole joint. After an overnight rest, the line was sanded to form a seamless appearance while still fixed firmly to the baseplate. The same putty was thinned with liquid cement and use to fill in the aforementioned fine joints in the bodywork.
ZERO PAINTS SYSTEM
The whole model was painted with Zero Paints materials because they are extremely reliable and easy to use. One happy with the minor filling operations on the body, I airbrushed a light layer of Zero's Pink Primer (ZP-3024). It's an ideal base for the red topcoat and the slight colouration makes it much
easier to find imperfections than if a white primer were used. After a couple of days to dry and gentle sanding, the bodywork was ready to receive the red. Zero's Ferrari SF70H Red (ZP-1007) as mentioned in my 'Editor's Choice' section last issue was my material of choice here, although Tamiya's own TS-49 Bright Red in aerosol form is ideal too. The red applied so smoothly there was no need to sand it back, so I jump straight to the gloss varnish stage. I will talk about this in detail next time, but suffice to say, Zero Paints' Diamond Finish two-part clear-coat is a marvel of modern chemistry and I was amazed how glossy it is, no sanding necessary. I shall hand over to the photos now, and hopefully by this time next month I will have finished the model for part two of this article! Happy modelling. â—? TMMI 271 May 2018

Here we see the forward 'fuselage' of the model coming together. The two small white parts are internal sockets for the front suspension elements
The engine cover was cemented to the forward body section as a gamble to simplify the painting stages. Note the line of filler where the two engine cover halves meet
Numerous parts meet around the air intake and they need filling for an accurate result. Sanding around the two struts was particularly challenging
Although mostly hidden, the seam along the bottom of the fuselage was puttied and sanded smooth
The four white parts seen here are anchor points to secure the engine cover to the floorpan plate, a very good idea indeed

ome time back, Tamiya released an exquisite kit of the Kawasaki Ki-61 ‘Hien’ in 1:48. We covered this twice because it’s such a beauty. To follow this, Tamiya have now released a 1:72 version of the aircraft and it is a real beauty, from the lovely cockpit to the amazing exterior detail. Let’s follow this photo-story to see how it goes together!

The whole of this Ki-61’s airframe is bright To form the metallic finish, Mission Models’ aluminium, and to achieve this, a layer of gloss ‘Chrome’ (MMC-001) was used, which creates black is required. Mission Models' Gloss Black a deeply impressive finish (MMGBB-001) is ideal.
The Chrome must be airbrushed in thin layers, gradually building up the finish. Once dry, the surface is remarkably durable
Here, the tail has been de-masked and the anti-dazzle panel sprayed
The MM Chrome is more than man-enough to be masked over, as we can see here
Mr Color RLM Red (114) was used to paint the tail and Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color (Brown) was then flowed into the engraved panel lines, as well as the rest of the airframe

TAKOM, CHINA
SD.KFZ.171 PANTHER A EARLY PRODUCTION FULL INTERIOR KIT www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.2097 With 2018 unfolding as the ‘year of the Panther tank’ Takom have made a significant contribution in the form of three all-new kits depicting the Ausf.A variant. All come with full interior detail from the belly of the hull up and as such, form major modelling projects. It seems that nothing has been left out, with detailed depictions of the torsion-bar suspension, engine, gearbox, driver’s station, fighting compartment and turret all present and correct. The detail in the moulded parts is extremely sharp, leaving just one photo-etched fret for the engine-deck screens. A truly impressive boxful of parts; it will be fascinating to see how it builds up, which is exactly what we will be doing.
ARTILLERIEGENERATORWAGEN M-16 www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE: 1:35 MATERIALS; R, PE, WS, SVT ITEM NO.454 This vehicle has a fascinating history and an equally interesting technology, its 150hp engine acting as an electrical generator to power motors that propelled it. The machine served as an artillery primer-mover in the First World War. Plus Model’s kit comprises around 280 parts in polyurethane resin plus a generous sheet of photo-etched brass parts for the thinner sheet-metal components of the model. Construction is complex and comprehensive, with full depictions of the chassis, fabulously steam-punk-looking engine and antiquarian body ‘styling’. It’s a wonderful subject for a kit and is certainly something ‘different’.

M3A3 BRADLEY CFV www.luckymodel.com SCALE: 1:35 MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.K61014 Around four years back, a new manufacturer Orochi Model tooled up for a Bradley kit in 1:35. It dropped off the radar after a while but since then, Kinetic acquired the moulds and have issued it under their own label. The model depicts the enhanced version with improved comms gear that can work closely with the M1A2 Abrams tank and Apache gunship. The kit is beautifully detailed and comes with non-slip texture moulded on its exterior surfaces in the appropriate areas. The large side-armour panels are moulded integrally with the upper hull with add-on ‘ERA’ armour blocks an option. The tracks are link-and-length style and are very well produced.
ISKANDER-M SS-26 STONE www.hobbyco.net SCALE: 1:72 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.5028 This Russian ballistic missile system is regarded by military experts as the most dangerous weapon of the Russian armed forces. Its ability to accurately plant conventional or nuclear warheads directly onto an enemy position is certainly terrifyingly effective. Zvezda’s kit is all new and demonstrates further the company’s skill across several different scales; there’s minimal detail compromise here, despite the smaller scale. The kit comes with a highly detailed chassis and drivetrain, with individual parts for the wishbone suspension and eight-wheel drive axles. The upper areas are no less comprehensive with fine detail on all surfaces. The twin missiles can be fitted ‘at rest’ or erected for firing.
A highly detailed, straightforward to build kit of the handsome Bradley, with two markings-options Detail on the backs of the integrally-moulded side armour panels might need extra detail
A scary ‘new cold war’ machine, modelled with superb detail in all areas Vinyl tyres will be hard to flat-spot. Hope aftermarket resin sets will be created soon TMMI 271 May 2018

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
FOKKER E.III EINDEKKER www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.7444 Sometimes, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s famous quote “less is more” is so true in scale modelling. We don’t all have time for long-haul, involved builds and a quick, refreshing project is often needed to cleanse the palate. Eduard’s delicious little single-sprue Fokker E.III ‘Eindekker’ hits the spot, and in Weekend Edition form there’s no PE to worry about. The kit is beautifully engineered and sports subtle rib detailed in the wings and an even subtler pattern along the fuselage flanks. Construction can be completed within hours or maybe a weekend (the clue is in the name) and you can add rigging if you wish, by following the guide in the instructions.
EBBRO, JAPAN
HONDAJET www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.11112 An aircraft kit is quite a departure for Ebbro, but it’s a very welcome one at that. The HondaJet business aircraft was designed and developed in Japan but is manufactured in North Carolina, using composite materials extensively in its airframe. It’s a pretty little jet, with very distinctive over-wing engine mounts that significantly lower the wings to allow for greater cabin capacity. Ebbro’s kit takes an equally unusual design principle, with the forward/ upper fuselage moulded as a single piece, following the colour boundary of the corporate livery. In theory this makes painting easier, but most will want to fill/sand the joint, then mask/paint conventionally. The cabin is nicely detailed with suitable plush executive seating. ‘Chrome’ parts are provided for the leading edges and engine intakes (missing from our pre-production kit) giving an extra spot of brightness to this stunning machine.
Gorgeous little model on just one sprue, with subtle detail
Superb subject, some neat detail touches and an decent interior

FERDINAND SD.KFZ. 184 GERMAN TANK DESTROYER www.hobbyco.net SCALE: 1:72 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.5028 With Tamiya’s recently tooled 1:35 kit of the Elefant now well established in the marketplace, Russian maker Zvezda have taken a stab at it’s ‘brother’ vehicle, the Ferdinand tank destroyer, also in the universally popular scale of 1:35. Around a bathtub hull, facia panels are fitted to provide better detail than is possible from a one-piece moulding, a sensible approach. The suspension bogies build up from four parts, making them quick and easy to assemble without losing detail. The linkand-length tracks come with enough individual links to allow for the pronounced sag so characteristic of this machine. The casemate assembles from separate panels, the rear sides of which have interlocking tabs for realism. Certainly an impressive model that cries out to be built, painted and weathered!

The slim and stylish kit box is rammed with light grey sprues, the bulk of which carry the parts for the engine, chassis, drivetrain and winch sub-assemblies, all of which sport amazingly fine detail. Within the instructions, we find two illustrations from the original technical manual that show the brake cables, levers and hydraulic lines, should you wish to add them yourself, a thoughtful touch. From an in-box viewpoint, this is a stunning kit of the WW2 British workhorse. Incredible detail, great subject, cool camo patterns Little to criticise from a first glance. KIT PREVIEW BRABHAM BT18 HONDA F-2 1966 F2 CHAMPION ● KIT NO.2022
BRABHAM’S BELTER With the Honda RA273E engine in its super-light chassis, the 1966 F2 Brabham BT18 Honda was a winning machine from the outset. TMMI's Editor examines Ebbro's new 1:20 kit
B
ack in the earlier days of Formula 1, many drivers also participated in the F2 category. Honda entered the scene with a new engine following the 1964 change in the rules that allowed a one-litre engine of up to four cylinders, teaming with Jack Brabham for the 1965 season. Poor results that year lead to a wholly new powerplant for the ‘66 season – the RA273E – which developed 150hp. Further chassis developments resulted in the Brabham Honda BT18 which was a highly successful car, taking the 1966 F2 Championship. Ebbro recently added this historic machine to their 1:20 line-up much to the delight of model motorsport

fans everywhere, as well as us here at TMMI! The kit includes a masterful rendition of the BT18’s spaceframe chassis from which are hung the side-mounted fuel tanks and double-wishbone suspension elements. These parts are all in scale and look exquisitely delicate, whilst actually being more than man enough to support the model. The Honda straight-four, DOHC engine is absolutely gorgeous, its block being presented as a single-part on its own sprue. To this, the cam covers and ancillary items are added to form a marvellous replica of the famous power unit. The car featured a nose-mounted radiator with water pipes running the
full length of the chassis to the engine; all this is represented in Ebbro’s kit, viewable on the finished model thanks to removable body parts. In the cockpit, a full set of foot-pedals and their master cylinders are provided, along with a gear shift linkage and full-length steering column. This is a delicious kit of the Jack Brabham/Denny Hulme BT18 and it takes its rightful place in the miniature motorsport hall of fame. ● AVAILABILITY; Ebbro models and are widely available from good model shops and online. FULL BUILD: SCIENCE-FICTION FILM MODEL DEAGOSTINI 1:43 STAR WARS MILLENNIUM FALCON PT.3
Pt.3
SHE MAY NOT LOOK LIKE MUCH, BUT SHE'S GOT IT WHERE IT COUNTS, KID PT.2: FILLING THE CARGO BAY TO BURSTING! Jim Hatch continues the construction of DeAgostini’s 1:43 Millennium Falcon, adding 3D-printed details and more
DeAgostini did a superb job of recreating the interior corridors of this, one of the most iconic of all spacecraft. One task they had to do was to introduce the step you see between the main corridor and the curved one. The film didn’t have this due to the film sets, but the model needed it for continuity
M
y 'Corellian Light Freighter Factory' only operates between other article commitments, so whilst the Millennium Falcon (original designation YT-1300 492727ZED) was awaiting her fitting-out process, a number of other generous souls sent me some

extra items to use with this build, including new parts from Shapeways, courtesy of shop owner 308Bits. You will have seen the 3D-printed parts that I showed here in the December 2017 issue (No.266), from the same shop owner/designer. These have now been supplemented by further
details that will be included in the cargo hold area, and also externally. First of all is my planned work for the labyrinth of corridors within the Millennium Falcon, and some of the parts which will alter this area for the better. Whilst the kit parts are more than presentable, they miss the lighting along the
footplates that run around the edges of the corridor. These will eventually be fitted with a white LED strip that will be mounted in the recess underneath the floor. My Paragrafix PE set will replace the floor detail itself and provide the means to let the LEDs illuminate the way. Surgery is required,
SPONSORED BY
There is nothing really wrong with the kit floor parts if you wish to build a beautiful out-of-box model of the Falcon, but the Paragrafix set has corrected the parts and introduced new features
To introduce the floor lights around the edge of the corridors, the kit plastic edge needs to be removed. The author found it easiest and least messy to do this with a No.11 scalpel
Overlaying the Paragrafix parts shows the discrepancy between these and the kit parts with regards to the floor tile positions. You can also clearly see the footlights that run around the edges. Unfortunately, the plastic that is supposed to hold the corridor hoops in position was accidentally removed
To give you a rough idea of how things will look, the Paragrafix floor is temporarily placed, along with one of the corridor hoops that will be fitted with eighteen small cushioned pads. Other cushions will fit to the walls, in between the hoops
A feature that can’t be used with this build are the smuggling compartments. The author intends to run a flexible LED strip under the plastic floor and this would interfere with this feature
These are quite tedious. Each of the corridor hoops is fitted with these small cushioned pads. The DSPIAE cutters are great for trimming very close to the parts
There a few of these to make. The author’s intention is to airbrush and weather the pads whilst fitted to the hoops, then remove them and paint the hoop before reinstating the pads and gluing with Tamiya cement
A small corridor exists between the main corridors and the central turrets. This is that turret, temporarily lined with yet more cushions. You’ll see this assembled in the next part of this build
One area that is devoid of detail on this model (as per the filming model) are the upper and lower ledges outside the Hyperdrive engine. In accordance with the other filming details, courtesy of SciFiModels.de. There is a lot of resin here but clean-up should be minimal
but it isn’t too onerous. Time to start hacking. At the edge of each of the corridor floor sections, runs what is supposed to be the footlights area. DeAgostini moulded these solid with no way to have them illuminated as they were in the film. Work starts by carving those areas away with a No.11 scalpel. The plastic is quite thick, and I find this is far quicker to achieve by manually attacking it instead of sanding. It’s also less risky than if I’d used a Dremel. Now, mistake No.1. Whilst removing the plastic edges, I also removed the small tabs that are used for locating the corridor hoops. Whoops! Whilst the Paragrafix instructions warn against removing these, A test fit of various parts showed that everything still fitted just fine, and there was no need for concern. Later, an LED strip will run under the floor, and light will filter through the footlights of the PE corridor floor that I will fit. For now though, I’m happy with the work. Note also that the Paragrafix set allows for the smuggling compartments to be created due to some separate floor tiles. I opted not to use this feature as it would interfere with the LED strips I'd be installing under there. For this, the smugglers' panels will be glued into place with CA. It can also be seen that the PE floor tile positions don’t correspond with the kit parts. This was something that Paragrafix fixed with their PE set. The Falcon’s corridors were lined with cushioning, and that is what I’ll next look at. With a magazine part-work that has 100 issues, many tasks are spread – sometimes painfully – over numerous issues. When it came to the cushion pads and corridor hoops, this was over a total of twelve magazine issues. The cushions are moulded in a beige plastic and as with all parts, they are supplied on traditional sprues. Another thing that DeAgostini omitted were the corridor lighting sconces, but thankfully I had a Paragrafix set that included these, or at least the mounting plates. Using their instructions, the appropriate cushions were drilled out, and the external TMMI 271 May 2018

These are the new Hyperdrive nozzles, all individually packed to reduce risk of damage. DeAgostini doesn’t provide any nozzle details on their model as none existed on the filming model. These details are shown in other filming sequences
The nozzles set comes with a flexible plastic Hyperdrive screen. This will be fitted in place and then the nozzles glued into position from the rear using either CA or epoxy adhesive
corridor tubes, allowing me to later fit green LEDs. My next task is to source the 3D-printed sconce centres. More on that in the next instalment. All that remains for now is to explain what else I have been kindly sent to further improve DeAgostini’s Star Wars masterpiece. One area that was going to be
giving a much nicer representation. This is also supplemented by a full set of resin details which line the upper and lower external ledges adjacent to the Hyperdrive screen, also courtesy of these guys. These are simply excellent and if you’re serious about this model, they are an absolute must buy. Lastly,
improved by means of a new Hyperdrive screen was the rear engine area. I do have a Shapeways 3D-printed part to replace the kit parts, but I have now also been sent a much better solution in the shape of a set by Nico Möbius of SciFiModels.de, and Joe Rau. This includes a new plastic screen and 3D-printed engine nozzles,
for this particular issue is a mention of the Archive-X paint which was kindly sent to me courtesy of Guy Cowen. These are formulated to the old Floquil paint colours that were used by the original model makers who did the Falcon for the original 1977 film. You can’t get much better than that! More next time! ●

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:35 US LIGHT TANK M3 STUART LATE PRODUCTION â—? KIT NO.35360
STUART, LITTLE! TMMI's Editor examines the new-tool M3 Stuart Light Tank 'late production'
T
amiya's new-tool M3 Stuart in 1:35 came as somewhat of a surprise, as I described in last issue's Editor's Page. My initial thoughts were that it had been partially re-tooled to accurize the engine deck issues, plus a new set of tracks. But no, it's completely new from the ground up, much to the delight of many modellers. The hull builds up from a belly plate, with individual side panels. This is done to maximise the quality of the detail due to the way the parts come out of the mould. An internal bracket steadies the side panels while the rear and frontal plates are

attached. The suspension bogies are designed to be straightforward to assemble without compromising the detail and authenticity, sandwiching a pair of roadwheels between the front and back halves. The wheels now sport extremely realistic welding seams on their spokes, a subtle but significant improvement over the older kit parts; the idler wheels also have weld seams. The hull .30cal MGs are provided, as well as circular blanking plates to cover the holes when the guns are not fitted. The upper hull features extremely well executed footman loops on the rear deck and
track-guard tops; they are more than simple rectangles, instead featuring the weld spots at either end. It's hard to see how they could look any better. Another neat feature is the inclusion of hull overhang plates so that the sponsons have actual 'floors' and not just open voids. The tracks are all new (the originals were famously incorrect) and they are state of the art for one-piece items. Do not be put off by this approach, the Stuart used 'live' (internally sprung) tracks so 'sag' was not present. They are also supremely easy to paint and fit, a real bonus for the modeller.
Tamiya have included different heads for the commander figure, allowing a US or Soviet machine to be depicted from the box; appropriate decals are included for this option. The last touch is a newly-tooled commander's .30cal and mount and it is an absolute gem, the perfect 'cherry on the cake' for this superb new model. â—? Book Reviews GOT A NEW BOOK? IF YOU ARE A PUBLISHER WITH A NEW MODELLING RELATED TITLE TO PUBLICISE, WHY NOT SEND IN A COPY FOR REVIEW HERE?
MAXXPRO MRAP, A VISUAL HISTORY OF THE MINE RESISTANT AMBUSH PROTECTED VEHICLES
JOHN ADAMS-GRAF WITH DAVID DOYLE, AMPERSAND GROUP INC. www.casematepublishing.co.uk In recent wars, the MRAP mine-resistant concept has ruled US and coalition inventories and the mighty Navistar/IMG MaxxPro seems to have dominated within that category. In 1:35, Kinetic, Bronco/Riich, Panda and Legend Productions have produced kits of this machine and there are offerings in 1:16 and 1:72 too. This new title provides 120+ pages of photographic references for the modeller, showing the myriad versions, weapons-fits, armour upgrades and markings in close up; if you're about to start a MaxxPro kit, this book should be considered an essential companion volume.
155MM LONG TOM IN ACTION (12061)
DAVID DOYLE, SQUADRON SIGNAL PUBLICATIONS www.adhbooks.com and good book sellers The M1, M1A1 and M2 155mm Long Tom guns of the WW2 US arsenal are impressive beasts and a much-modelled subject, courtesy of AFV Club's towed artillery and SP model, and more recently, Tamiya's own M40 'Big Shot' kit. David Doyle's excellent new book covers just the towed variant but it will still be of interest if you're building the M40. Eighty+ pages are dedicated to this vast gun and we see it in many combat and deployment situations, all in crisp detail thanks to the large images and topgrade printing. Unmissable if you're on a Long Tom project.
SH-60 SEAHAWK IN ACTION (10251)
JOHN GOURLEY, SQUADRON SIGNAL PUBLICATIONS www.adhbooks.com and good book sellers Italeri offer a very neat kit of the 'B version of the SH-60 Seahawk helicopter with Hobbyboss listing the sub-variant in 1:72. This new In-Action title provides the reader with eighty+ full-colour pages showing the US Navy's versatile workhorse in a wide variety of applications and the photos are pure gold for modellers. The clear photos of physical structures and systems inside and out plus markings, weathering and more will be of enormous help in getting the details just right.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series NEW How to Build... TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A and F4U-1D CORSAIR When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic model kits. Each model since then has seen incremental improvements. Just when you think the series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves you wrong. Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every respect. Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included several new sprues and offered a wider range of camouflage and marking possibilities. Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit includes a significant number of brand new sprues to depict the unique attributes of this variant. We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown and accuracy. In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty of inspiration with two different configurations and colour schemes. We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s 1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk around of a Corsair under restoration.

The Editor’s Page... The Star Wars models shown below are by kind permission of John Simmons
‘R
eefer White, Caboose Red, Reefer Orange, Daylight Red, Depot Olive’. If you’re a hardcore Star Wars fan and have read about the creation of the numerous spaceships and vehicles for the original trilogy by Industrial Light and Magic in the mid ‘70s, these titles might sound familiar. They refer to paint names made by US manufacturer Floquil, which were used by ILM’s technicians to paint the wonderful X-Wings, Y-Wings, Slave One, Millennium Falcon and many more. In an extraordinary effort to re-create the exact colours produced by the now defunct Floquil, a new company ‘Archive-X’ has matched the original shades to form a new line of factory-fresh enamels ready for the modeller to use on their kits and from initial inspection, I am deeply impressed. The paints come in 30ml glass jars and with a little thinning, they are ready to spray or, being enamels, hand-paint. The range is extensive and if you’re on Facebook, check out their Page by searching for ‘Archive X’. We will be using these paints on future products, so keep reading TMMI! ●

Editor's Choice MISSION MODELS CHROME www.missionmodelsus.com www.tigerhobbies.co.uk As you can see in this issue, I used Mission Models’ ‘Chrome’ (MMC-001) to create the finish on the Tamiya 1:72 Ki-61 Hien. It’s under a few layers of weathering but my theory was to start out as bright as possible, then tone down the finish gradually. I am mightily impressed with this material, which creates a bright and very resilient finish straight from the bottle, via airbrush. For the best result, it needs to be sprayed over Mission Models’ Gloss Black (MMGBB-001), which I did. Highly recommended for its toughness and reflective finish.
