A brief look at kits that have recently arrived at TMMI HQ!
REVELL, EUROPE 1:72 POLIKARPOV I-153 CHAIKA ITEM NO.03963 • www.revell/de/en ICM’s divine little Chaika (seagull) appears in a Revell box here and it’s a lovely production with very fine, modern detailing. The cockpit is adequate (little of it will be seen) but it’s the airframe that’s the real triumph here, sporting subtle rib/stringer patterns through the ‘skin’
ICM, UKRAINE 1:48 POLIKARPOV I-153 CHAIKA ITEM NO.03963 • www.revell/de/e ICM offer a Chaika in 1:48 and as with their 1:72 mouldings it’s a wonderfully detailed model with some very convincing airframe detail. The panel-work around the forward end of the fuselage exhibits restrained, recessed lines and the engine is well executed too
REVELL, EUROPE 1:72 HEINKEL HE70 F-2 ITEM NO.03962 • www.revell/de/en Another sensible re-boxing choice by Revell here. The plastic is from ICM again, with an earlier style of detailing on the airframe that is so incredibly subtle (and in-scale) that it’s hardly there. Light coats of paint will allow this to show through
REVELL, EUROPE 1:72 MIL MI-28N HAVOC ITEM NO.04944 • www.revell/de/en The plastic parts of this kit date back to the early ‘90s but don’t let that put you off, it’s a very nice production featuring delicate, recessed panel and rivet lines and finely moulded weapons. Decals are provided for one Russian demo aircraft, 2001
REVELL, EUROPE 1:48 ROLAND C.II ITEM NO.03965 • www.revell/de/en Eduard make the polystyrene contribution here in the form of their lovely Roland C.II ‘Walfisch’ (whale) from a few years back. It’s a great choice because Eduard did a lovely job and now the model is widely available from mainstream outlets
WINGNUT WINGS, NEW ZEALAND 1:32 BRISTOL F.2B FIGHTER (POST WAR) ITEM NO.32060 • www.wingnutwings.com Wingnut Wings have re-issued their gorgeous Bristol Fighter kit in an overall doped-silver, post-war finish here and it looks fantastic, transforming the aircraft’s appearance. Five markings-options are offered; Egypt x2, India, Ireland and NZ
WINGNUT WINGS, NEW ZEALAND 1:32 DH.9A NINAK (POST WAR) ITEM NO.32061 • www.wingnutwings.com In a similar vein to the Bristol Fighter, the beefy DeHavilland DH.2 Ninak gets a post-war treatment too, with five overall silver schemes and one in camouflage green. If you’ve never seen one of these kits before, do yourself a favour and buy one, they are exquisite
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:72 AVIA B.534 QUATTRO COMBO ITEM NO.R0010 • www.eduard.com Some fantastic decal schemes are on offer in this release, which reuses sprues from Roden’s still very good 2002 kit. No less than eight schemes are offered including RAAF in Libya 1941, Swedish volunteers in Finland 1940, RAF in UK, and Royal Navy on HMS Eagle 1940

L’ARSENAL, FRANCE 1:24 NASA-JPL RANGER 6 LUNAR PROBE 1965 ITEM NO.2401 • www.larsenal.com This is an amazing resin kit of NASA’s 1965 Ranger 6 lunar probe and it sports some breathtakingly fine detail in its castings, some of which are truly tiny. Plenty of photo-etch is included, along with copper mesh, brass rod and decals. Fabulous stuff, a beautiful model
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:144 AVIA B.534 QUATTRO COMBO ITEM NO.4451 • www.eduard.com Even in 1:144, Eduard’s Avia is highly detailed with delicate moulded parts for the wing struts, undercarriage and cockpit (yep, they even have cockpits!). The best thing though is that no less than four whole kits are in the box, which is extraordinarily good value
BRENGUN, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:72 ZLIN Z-50 LS GOLDEN AGE ITEM NO.BRP72018 • www.brengun.cz This is a gorgeous little injection-moulded kit (with resin and PE) of Zlin’s pretty Z-50 aerobatic aircraft which has sophisticated detail on its airframe and a decent cockpit too. It’ll be a very quick build but the bulk of its workbench time will be spent on the paint scheme which involves a lot of tricky masking!
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 SPITFIRE MK.VIII WEEKEND EDITION ITEM NO.84139 • www.eduard.com The famous ‘Grey Nurse’ is one of the two markings-options offered in this ‘Weekend Edition’ version of Eduard’s sublime Spitfire Mk.VIII. The kit comprises just the plastic sprues and decals; it might take more than a weekend but without PE or resin, it’ll be much quicker to build
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 MIRAGE IIIC WEEKEND EDITION ITEM NO.84139 • www.eduard.com As with the Spitfire Mk.VIII reviewed here, the Mirage IIIC comprises just injection-moulded parts and decals but Eduard do offer the PE and other goodies separately if you change your mind. A wonderful kit with very fine airframe detail and a couple of appealing colour schemes
BRONCO, HONG KONG 1:35 PANZERKAMPFWAGEN II (F1) SD.KFZ.122 W/UE TRAILER ITEM NO.CB35090 • www.hannants.co.uk Bronco have included their excellent Renault UE trailer with this release of the Pz.II (F1) flamethrower tank, making it quite a complex (in a good way) production. A wonderfully involving, detailed tank kit (glue-together link tracks) with an equally well done trailer (with link-length tracks)
BRONCO, HONG KONG 1:35 HORSA GLIDER WINGS AND REAR FUSELAGE (TAIL UNIT) SET ITEM NO.AB3574 • www.hannants.co.uk Bronco’s 1:35 Horsa glider was an incredible achievement and it makes a large model when complete. For armour modellers wishing to build a D-Day or Market Garden diorama, this set of just the tail/rear fuselage and outer wings will be ideal for placing in the background
REVELL, EUROPE 1:48 TORNADO GR.4 ITEM NO.04924 • www.revell/de/en Revell’s 1:48 Tornado is quite a complicated build and the airframe needs patience, but it does look great once together and has some excellent detailing inside and out. Revell have issued the kit in GR.4 guise and it comes with special fin markings TMMI 245 March 2016

MARQUEZ'S MAGIC MACHINE Great news for motorcycle model fans from the Nuremberg Toy Fair! Tamiya announces the release of an all-new kit depicting the Repsol Honda RC213V run by the works Repsol Honda team in 2014
2
014 was a momentous MotoGP season for the Repsol Honda team and young sensation Marc Marquez. The year saw thirteen wins from him as he absolutely dominated, attaining the Riders', Constructors' and Team Championships. The RC213V debuted in 2012, with new engine size regulations stipulating a maximum of 1,000cc. It features an aluminium, double-tube frame and powerful 1,000cc Honda four-stroke V4 with pneumatic valve system. Its seamless transmission saves valuable power during shifts, while other high-tech features include traction control, an anti-wheelie system and engine braking control. Tamiya's new release follows the much loved (and often imitated) format for 1:12 bike kits that has been established over several decades by the company. In this release, the bodywork,
8
engine, exhaust system, radiator, wheels and front forks are moulded in white polystyrene with the frame, rear suspension, brakes, chain, headset, handlebars and bike stand being formed from metallic grey polystyrene. A clear sprue provides the windshield, some small body parts and the rollerblade-style wheels for the stand. The tyres are moulded in black synthetic rubber, as is normal. Also in the box is a length of black vinyl tubing, a metal spring for the rear suspension, mini-screws, screwdriver, self-adhesive masks (not pre-cut) and of course, decal sheets (X3) for the bike's livery with some dark carbon-fibre effect markings, instrument panel and tyre logos. The kit is a comprehensive package that allows an off-the-shelf purchase to be built into a fantastic-looking model using Tamiya TS sprays and standard model paints. Of
course, if you want to elevate your model to a higher level, keep an eye on the websites of aftermarket providers as there is certain to be a raft of photo-etched detail sets for the kit after it has been released. If you can't wait for those detail sets to arrive, Tamiya's front fork set (12667, see New Releases Accessories this issue) goes on sale at the same time as the bike kit to crank up the detail even further! Also, a new Tamiya Spray Color called 'TS-96 Fluorescent Orange' (85096) has been created for use with this model. Another stunning 1:12 Repsol Honda MotoGP kit joins Tamiya’s motorcycle line up, in style. ● MN MODEL SPEC TAMIYA REPSOL HONDA RC213V ‘14 KIT NO.14130 SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:12 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . .IM, SVT, MS, PCM, WS AVAILABILITY; From all good model shops. MOTTLING
IN MINIATURE!
Jason Brewer demonstrates the results that can be achieved using Iwata’s HP-B Plus airbrush on a classic Tamiya model
A
fter serving as Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG 52 in the Battle of Britain, Hans-Günter von Kornatzki transferred to a post as chief instructor of Jagdfliegerschule 1 fighter pilot school. In 1943 he developed special techniques for combat against the increasing number of four-engined Allied bombers raiding Europe, using specially modified Fw190's in units known as Sturmstaffel. While only credited with six victories in his career, he
is best remembered as the father of the well-known armoured and heavily armed Sturmbock Fw190's. Unfortunately, Obstlt. von Kornatzki's life was cut short while leading Sturmgruppe JG 4 during a massive Allied attack at Magdenburg. After claiming a victory over a B-17G, he attempted an emergency landing of his heavily damaged Fw190A-8/R2 but crashed into power lines and did not survive. This model is of the Sturmstaffel developers's last mount, "Green 3".
THE BUILD
Originally, the goal of this build was a simple one: build a typical Tamiya ‘shake and bake’ kit just so I could make my first real attempt at Luftwaffe mottling. I had a Tamiya Fw190A-8 kit in the stash, and I also had a good bit of random aftermarket bits in the spares bin that could be put to good use. However, after picking a scheme and doing my research I became far too invested in the model and things started to snowball a little, which isn't uncommon for me when it
10 March 2016 TMMI 245
p 10-14 Fw190 245MN.indd 10
29/01/2016 09:58
comes to Luftwaffe subjects. I like to start off my builds by riveting the airframe and lightly scribing the panel lines. After making the initial pattern with the rivet tool, I go back and deepen each rivet with a needle point which creates a small ridge around each hole that is later sanded flush. For the cockpit, I raided the spares box once again where I found lots of useful parts from abandoned previous builds and other leftovers. A cockpit tub from MDC was a great place to start for dressing things up and I also had a resin seat from Vector, rudder pedals and control column from CMK sets, a partial Eduard Zoom set with the upper instrument panel intact, and a Quickboost gunsight. It's quite the hodgepodge of an 'office', but everything went together nicely and it was a great way to use up some spares. Sub-assemblies complete, it was time to assemble the airframe. The fuselage halves were joined with Tamiya Extra Thin cement, squeezed to create a bead of plastic along the seam, and the bead sanded away leaving a flawless join - gotta love Tamiya fit! I was sure to scribe and rivet the dorsal and ventral spine panel lines on the aft fuselage.
AN EXERCISE IN MOTTLING
Finally! The whole reason for the build from the beginning; time to get some colour on her! For this model, I used an Iwata HP-B Plus airbrush. I don't necessarily use a 'primer', per se, but I do give my models a light coat of Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey to check for errors and provide a uniform base. Before getting to the camo colours I painted the RVD (Reichsluftverteidigung; Air Defence of the Reich) band with Tamiya XF-2 Flat White and XF-69 NATO Black and the exhaust panels were also sprayed with XF-69. If you haven't noticed, this is my go-to 'scale black'. The NATO Black was lightened with XF-53 Neutral Grey and some light fading was applied. These areas were masked off with Tamiya masking tape and the plane received it's first coat of colour, RLM 76 using Gunze's Mr Color line of lacquers. I much prefer acrylic paints to lacquers, but I like Gunze's line of RLMs and they lay down quite nicely using Mr Color Leveling Thinner. The RLM 76 was then lightened with a drop of Mr Color Flat White and some random patchy fading was applied.
The build starts off with riveting and light rescribing of panel lines
The cockpit tub is painted with Tamiya XF-63 German Grey and faded with lightened base colour
Vector's resin seat is painted and faded just like the tub. Details and chips were painted with Vallejo acrylics, then it was glossed with Future and washed with AK's Dark Wash, and a coat of AK's Ultra Matte Varnish brings it to life
U
The cockpit parts finished and ready for assembly
Test fitting the Vector seat in the MDC cockpit tub
The pieced-together cockpit assembly came together nicely

V I try to avoid being too
predictable with my fading when it comes to the overall surfaces of the wings and fuselage, but I do like to pick out some random panels, hatches, and select rows of rivets to highlight. The fabric control surfaces were sprayed entirely with the lightened colour. After the RLM 76 was finished, it was time for the standard pattern of RLMs 74 and 75. These were sprayed freehand – except for masking where the wing root meets the fuselage – and they received the same lightening treatment as the RLM 76. At last I was ready to give the mottle a go, and I started out with the lighter camo colour RLM 75. This was heavily thinned with Mr Color Leveling Thinner and airbrushed at low pressure, slowly building up the mottle effect. I did a little more 75 than I had intended, but I knew that some of it would be covered up by the 74. The same process was repeated with the RLM 74, attempting to keep things as random as possible while following the profile I used as a guide. This plane had fairly dense mottling and eventually I reached a result that made me happy. I went back with some heavily thinned RLM 76 to touch up any overspray and tighten up some of the mottles. In the end, I was quite pleased with my first attempt! The tail band and exhaust panels could now me unmasked to get a feel for the overall scheme
The undercarriage parts were painted and faded with a custom mix of Tamiya acrylics and highlights painted by brush
The spinner spiral was painted on, first painting the spinner white, applying a vinyl spiral mask, followed by Tamiya NATO Black, and the mask removed
A pre-paint mockup of the major components shows the riveting, Hasegawa armour plates, Eagle Editions gun cowl. The engine cowl has some minor gaps that need to be addressed
A mockup of the engine with the Ultracast spinner and wide paddle propeller. The Ultracast parts are an excellent upgrade from the kit parts
A little bit of Mr Dissolved putty made quick work of the gaps. This can be cleaned up with Mr Color thinner so no sanding is required
The RLM 76 was applied first, then the base colour was lightened to apply fading and highlights
WEATHERING AND FINAL TOUCHES
'Green 3' had a very short service life, literally only two days in September 1944, so weathering was kept to a minimum. Some minor wear and chipping was added to the wing roots with Vallejo Neutral Grey and Citadel Mithril Silver applied by sponge, along with chipping on the leading edges of the wings and cowling using Vallejo Neutral Grey applied in the same fashion. The panel lines and rivets were washed with AK-Interactive's Dark Wash for Green Vehicles, to great effect. These washes are very forgiving and give you plenty of time to work, capillary action takes care
The Ultracast main wheels were airbrushed with Tamiya German Grey and NATO Black and details picked out with Vallejo and Citadel acrylics
The standard pattern of RLM 74/75 was applied next, with the same fading and highlight technique as used with the RLM 76
A heavily thinned mix of RLM 75 was used to apply the first mottle colour, slowly building up the effect

When the wash was dry I gave the model a coat of AK-Interactive's Ultra Matte Varnish - perhaps too "dead flat" for a plane this fresh, but I love the look. Having tried many flat coats over the years since the old-formula Polly Scale flat clear disappeared, I'm very happy with AK's offering. It's acrylic, sprays well, doesn't frost and is durable to handling. It can even be touched up by brush and leave the same finish as the airbrushed areas. With the model flat coated, unmasked the cockpit, windscreen, and canopy (my favourite step of the entire build) and got started of the exhaust stain. For this I used Tamiya acrylics thinned with 91% isopropyl alcohol. It would be more appropriate to refer to it as tinted alcohol, as the ratio is at least 10:1 alcohol to paint. I start out with Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown to make the initial outline of the stain, slowly building up the effect. I incrementally add small amounts of XF-63 German Grey as I move toward the heavier part of the stain. The same brown/grey mix was used for the ammo chute stains as well as dirtying up the bottom edge of the gear doors. The heavily thinned mix provides lots of control over the effect. As a final touch, I sprayed a similarly thin streak of XF-53 Neutral Grey behind each individual exhaust stack. The fiddly bits are all that remain now, most of which had already been painted along the way. The wheels
The paint work is now complete, and the tail bands and exhaust panels have been unmasked
Next the RLM 74 mottle was applied the same way. Some touch up was done with RLM 76 to clean up any overspray and tighten some of the mottles
Miracle Paint Masks were used for the major markings: the insignia and the 'Green 3'. These can be tedious but the result is worth the effort
The decals were sealed in another coat of Future and the model was given a treatment of AK-Interactive Dark Wash for Green Vehicles to bring out the details, panel lines, and rivets
After a gloss coat of Future, the stencil decals and smaller markings were applied and settled down nicely after an application of Solvaset decal solution
AK-Interactive's Ultra Matte Varnish was used to give the model a 'dead flat' finish

The propeller blades got some light chipping with sponge-applied Vallejo Neutral Grey. The drop tank was handled in much the same way as everything else: sponge chipping with Vallejo Neutral Grey and AK's Dark Wash. Focke Wulf landing gear is always tricky. After a bit of work and a few swear words, I managed to get the bird on her feet with the legs and wheels at the correct angles. From here, completion was a matter of attaching all of the fiddly bits. I build a lot of Focke Wulfs, so I had several of Quickboost's sets of multiple
pitot tubes for the '190 - one was grabbed, trimmed to the proper length, painted and installed. The Eagle Editions cowl gun barrels were painted black and drybrushed with grey, and the kit wing root gun barrels were replaced with hypodermic tubing treated the same way.
FINAL VERDICT
Tamiya's Rammjager kit has been out for a while but is still a joy to build. While I only intended to practice my Luftwaffe mottling, I'm glad that the Sturmbock build became more involved and I'm quite pleased with the finished model - a great addition to the display case. I like to think that the late von Kornatzki would approve of my tribute to his last mount. ●

IL DUCE’S DASHING
DREADNOUGHT It finally happened; we have an injection-moulded plastic kit in 1:350 of an Italian battleship. Thank you Trumpeter! Ulf Lundberg builds the kit and adds a little extra detail
T
he Roma was the fourth and last of the Littorio class battleships. The hull of the third ship of the class, the Impero, was built and launched, but never finished. Roma differed from her sisters Littorio and Vittorio Veneto, mainly in that she was slightly longer and in that her sheer line was altered to give her more freeboard at the bow. This
improved her sea keeping abilities and it gave her a small speed advantage over her sisters in rough seas. Her keel was laid on 18th September 1938 and she was launched on 9 June 1940, one day before Italy's entry into the war. By the time she was commissioned on 14th June 1942, Italy's fuel supply was running short and its strategic situation was deteriorating.
Accordingly Roma spent most of her time in harbour and only took part in some exercises and some occasional moves from one naval base to another. In June 1943 she was damaged during two Allied bomb raids and sent to Genoa for repairs. Tragically, Roma is best known for the dramatic way she was sunk. When underway to Malta to
surrender after the Italian armistice, she was sunk on 9th September 1943 by two German ‘Fritz X’ radio-guided bombs. The first went through the ship and exploded underneath it, damaged the keel, caused major flooding and slowed her down to ten-knots. The second bomb hit in the forward magazine which exploded and blew the No.2 main turret overboard. This

hit sealed her fate. She sank rapidly, breaking in two in the process and taking 1,352 of her crew of 1,948 with her, including admiral Carlo Bergamini. Uniquely, the sinking is documented by both German and Italian photographers. Dramatic, terrifying and deeply tragic pictures showing the death of scores of young seamen. The broken wreck was found in 2012. The battleships of the Littorio class had many interesting features compared to their contemporaries, but it is questionable whether they were successful designs. They had a unique torpedo protection system that featured a long, empty cylinder made of thin plates, surrounded by oil and water tanks. The idea was that the cylinder would implode when a torpedo hit the ship, thus absorbing the power of the explosion and leaving the rest of the ship
undamaged. It didn't work. The Littorio was nearly sunk during the British attack on Taranto, after being hit by only three relatively light torpedoes, surviving only because she could be beached. The Bismarck also took three hits from the same type of torpedoes, but they never threatened her ability to stay afloat. Italy didn't have the capacity to produce 40cm guns, but the Italians tried to compensate for that by designing a 38cm gun with a very heavy shell and very high muzzle velocity. The shell did have very good penetrating power, but the design also made for quick barrel wear, and it was reported that the spread of their salvoes increased visibly with each salvo. In one aspect however, they were superior to almost all their contemporaries, their looks! Only the Scharnhorst can compete with them in this respect.

KIT V THE Trumpeter’s kit is good, but
not exceptional. The fit is with some exceptions very good and there is almost no flash. The length of the hull and the beam is correct, (some reviews on the net have incorrectly stated otherwise) but the auxiliary rudders are incorrectly placed. The hull is divided along the waterline into an upper and lower half, which creates more problems than it solves. Inconsistently, the upper part of the hull has surface detail but the lower half does not. Trumpeter provides a small fret of PE, which includes the catapult, the aircraft crane, ladders, radar and some other equipment, but no railings. The PE sets from the aftermarket manufacturers that I could find, were more expensive than the kit itself, which put me off so much, that I decided not to buy them but to make use of my spares parts box and my own detailing skills instead.

REFERENCES
For this build I used two excellent sources of reference: Warship Pictorials ‘RN Roma’ is filled with beautiful sharp photos that have obviously been selected by someone who knows what modellers need. Oddly the paint scheme on the back cover is incorrect in some areas. It does not correspond to the beautiful side view photos on page 48-49. Apart from that flaw, I found the book very useful and I recommend it strongly. Ermina Bagnascos and Augusto de Toros ‘Le
1. The hull was strengthened internally using plastic from the base plate for the waterline option 2,3. Liberal amounts of liquid cement and vigorous rubbing and pressing was insufficient to fill the joint. Plenty of putty and lots of sanding was required to conceal the waterline joint. 4. The oversized plating on the hull is painfully evident at the stem. I sanded it down to make it less prominent. Note also the absence of hull plating below the waterline. 5. Simple but important detailing: Sharpening the propeller blades. 6,7. The auxiliary rudders were moved to their correct positions. The struts for the propeller bearings were streamlined and then sacrificial anodes made from styrene strip were added. 8. The ugly joint across the foredeck was filled with a piece of plastic strip. The cradles for the dinghies are still visible, but were soon cut away. 9. Every ventilator on the foredeck was cut away and its position marked with a hole. 10. Each ventilator was given a “foot” made from plastic rod. 11. Nice and orderly. 104 ventilators kept in boxes according to their size. 12. The midships ventilators were given a “hats” and all cradles for the boats were replaced with PE. Quite a few of them got bent later during the build, but it was no problem bending them back again. 13. Scratchbuilding four identical winches for the booms was beyond me, but some cutting and adding of plastic strip and rod improved their looks greatly. 14. More old school detailing: Stanchions were added to all bulwarks. 15. Cutting out the windows of the bridge was made easier by first drilling holes in their corners. I’ve found that it looks better to leave them open, than to fill them with Glue ‘n Glaze, Kristal Kleer or some similar compound.

16. Using my drill press as a lathe. The loose end of the rod is kept stable by sticking it into a hole drilled into a piece of particle board, clamped to the base of the drill press. 17. The trestletree was thinned down and drilled out and then strengthened with piano wire to stop its arms from bending under the strain or the rigging. 18. Gluing the yardarms at a right angle to the mast is easy if you do it in a jig. 19. The scratchbuilt upper masts and the signalling platform. Note the belaying benches made from PC glued to the railings. It would have been better to just drill holes through the platform inside the railings. 20,21. The supports for the blast bags were made from 0,25 mm PC and the bags themselves were sculpted from Greenstuff using a simple tool made from sprue and piano wire. 22,23. The foredeck was first covered with brown before I sprayed a thin layer of red over it. 24. The edges of the stripes were carefully measured and marked with strips of Tamiya Tape, before they were filled out with ordinary masking tape. If I hadn't cut the ventilators away from the deck, It would have been impossible to get the edges of the stripes straight. 25,26. Spraying white over red is a bad idea, so I laid a foundation of light grey-brown before spraying the white. 27,28. Upon removing the masking, I found the red and white a bit too bright looking. I solved it by "working" the white with grey-brown mists and the red with light brown.
Navi Da Battaglia Classe Littorio 1937-1948’ is also very useful, with a wealth of photos, beautiful line drawings and colour side-views.
THE BUILD; HULL
I commenced as usual by strengthening the hull internally. I cut the bottom plate for the waterline version of the kit and used the parts as lengthwise bulkheads (pic 1). Next came the unrewarding task of joining the upper and lower hull parts together. I had hoped that by applying liberal amounts of liquid cement and by rubbing and pressing the two halves together, I would be able to press so much molten plastic out of the joint, that I wouldn't need to use putty.
I was able to press quite a bit of molten plastic out of the joint, and I evened it out with even more liquid cement, but when I started sanding it became obvious that this wasn't enough. I had to resort to putty anyway (pics 2, 3). Lots of sanding was required to get the joint smooth but it can be argued that I should have sanded even more. Fore and aft of the side armour Trumpeter has tried to replicate the plating on the hull. It's rather clumsily done and it would probably be a good idea to sand all of that down too. That would however mean, that the eyebrows of the portholes and some other surface details would have to be rebuilt. I considered that to be a bit too much work,
so I contented myself with sanding down the plating a little to make it less prominent (pic 4). Now it was time to turn my attention to the propeller and rudder arrangement. The clumsy struts of the propeller bearings were streamlined and the edges of the propeller blades were sharpened (pic 5). The placement of the auxiliary rudders is incorrect, so I filled the holes with styrene and putty, cut away the upper part of the rudder fin and moved the rudders inboard (pic 6). In order to try to do something about the lack of detail on the underwater hull, I then added sacrificial anodes made from 0.25mm styrene to the propeller bearings and rudders (pic 7). For the
same purpose I also drilled two holes in the small ledge on the stem, where the wire ropes to the paravanes were made fast.
MAIN DECK
Next came the main deck. An ugly joint by the first barbette mars the foredeck. I filled the joint with a styrene strip and sanded it smooth (pic 08). The quarterdeck fitted perfectly on the other hand. The kit has several cradles for dinghies on the foredeck, but in none of my pictures of the Roma can I see that she carried them, nor are their cradles to be seen. I was happy to cut the cradles away for reasons to be explained. The foredecks of Italian ships were painted in red and white stripes. Knowing

V from experience how hard
it is to mask those stripes straight over a surface studded with ventilators (and hatches), I carefully cut the ventilators away. I drilled a hole to mark the location of each ventilator that was cut away (Pic 09). Cutting the ventilators away also allowed me to improve their looks. They should look like mushrooms and not like upturned buckets. I glued a "foot" of plastic rod to each ventilator (pics 10, 11). All in all I made 104 ventilators. The diameter of the ‘foot’ corresponded to the diameter of the hole that marked the location of the part. There are two sizes of ventilator and by using different size drills and corresponding size rods to the ‘feet’, I kept track of where the different sizes should go. The ventilators on the deck beside the superstructure are of a different shape. On the kit they are too low, but by adding a small ‘cap’ made from styrene rod it was easy to give them the correct height and a more true shape. The kit provides sixteen ship’s boats of different sizes. Again I couldn’t determine if Roma ever carried all those boats, which was lucky since it spared me the effort of detailing all of them. However, by omitting the boats, their clumsily moulded cradles became painfully visible. I cut away the cradles and dived into my PE spares box to find replacements. Hasagawa’s ‘Japanese Navy Ship’s Boats Set A’ provided most of them (pic 12).
SUPERSTRUCTURE
Roma's superstructure differs from those of her contemporaries' of other nations in that it's smaller and simpler. The kit’s fit of the parts is very good so the basic assembly of it posed no problems. The winches to the booms – aft of the second funnel – are moulded into the deck, which is not to their advantage. I judged it too hard to scratchbuild four identical ones, but some cutting, carving and adding some pieces of styrene greatly improved
their look (pics 13). I sanded down all the doors on the superstructure and replaced them with PE. Some of them would later be obscured by guns and other equipment, so it’s not always worth the effort. I also added stanchions made from 0.25mm styrene to all the bulwarks. It's remarkable how much this simple measure improves the impression of the platforms (pic 14). The windows of the bridges were cut out. Cutting out a number of parallel and equally sized windows is not easy, but drilling a small hole in the corners of each window and a larger one in the middle makes it a lot easier (pics 15). All ladders on the superstructure and in other places were cut away and replaced with PE.
29
THE MAINMAST
33
Plastic masts usually bend under the strain of the rigging, so I always build new ones from metal. The lower mainmast of Roma is a thick spar, that I made from 3mm brass rod and turned conical using my drill press as a lathe (pic 16). The lower mainmast is topped by a trestletree, and it needed some shaping up. Thinning it down, drilling it out and strengthening it with piano wire turned out to be harder work than I thought (pic 17). This was the only time that I regretted not buying Flyhawk's expensive PE set, that has beautiful replacement parts for the trestletree. The upper mast was made from piano wire and brass tubing and glued with CA-glue. When gluing yardarms to a mast I use a simple jig that I've made especially for this purpose (pic 18). The masts were then detailed with details cut away from the original parts, PE and footropes made from copper wire (pic 19). I replaced the barrels of the 38cm, 15cm and 9cm guns with turned parts from Master Models. The next step was to sculpt the blast bags. The ones of the main artillery were supported by struts that I built from 0.25mm styrene strip and the blast bags were made from Greenstuff. I sculpted the folds in with a simple

Getting myself into trouble. To thread the halyards through the belaying benches and then to stretch them was a major hassle. I persevered and got it right in the end. 37. The antennas were treaded over the main yardarm and then glued to the mizzen trestletree. They were then stretched and temporarily secured to barbette No.2 with small pieces of tape and glued to the yardarm.

THE PAINT JOB
When painting the Roma I used the same techniques that I've already described in my articles on the Scharnhorst (TMMI September 2013), the USS Buchanan (TMMI August 2014) and the Graf Spee (TMMI October 2014), so I won’t bore you by repeating them. Trumpeter’s painting guide for the Roma is unfortunately not correct. The splinter camouflage around turret three is incorrect as is the number and the angle of the red stripes on the foredeck. I used the photos in Warship Pictorials ‘RN Roma’ as painting guide. Note that changes were made to her camouflage as time went by. The false bow and stern wave were painted over and ever more things on board were painted dark grey. The unique thing about Roma's paint scheme was the red
and white stripes on her foredeck. Making them look worn and bleached was quite a challenge. I started by laying a foundation of medium brown, onto which I sprayed some light brown where the deck was most worn (pic 22). On top of that I sprayed a thin red layer that I then lightened up with some light red (pic 23). Don't use white to lighten up red colours, you'll get pink and the model will look like a Barbie doll; use yellow instead. Then I masked the red strips Measuring carefully to make
sure they were equally wide and parallel, I masked their edges with thin strips of Tamiya Tape, and then filled them out with ordinary masking tape. (pic 24). That was all covered with a coat of light brownish grey, (pic 25) onto which I sprayed some off white, where the deck would have been less worn, (pic 26) all of which was then oversprayed with a thin layer of off white. When I removed the masking tape, I found the whole thing a bit too bright, (pic 27) so I carefully toned it down with thin mists of grey-brown on the white
stripes and light brown on the red ones (pic 28).
THE RIGGING
Rigging ship models is for some reason surrounded by mystique, as if being able to do it was a gift given only to a select few. In reality it's just like everything else in modelling. It's a technique that you learn by practicing. The key is planning. To drill holes for the attachment points beforehand and then to work along the classical ship modelling principle: From below and up, from the centre and outwards. I use

line (pic 29); a thicker one for shrouds and stays and a thinner one for halyards and antennae. Transparent line can easily be dyed by pulling it along the tip of a marker pen (pic 30). I started the rigging with the mainmast shrouds. I threaded them through holes drilled into the trestletree and led them in a loop over the yardarms (pic 31). I stretched them, using electrical clamps as weights, (pic 32) and glued them with CA glue, using a piece of stretched sprue as applicator (pic 33). Next comes the critical step of cutting the lines. To prevent my hands from
shaking I rest them on some kind of support, plastic boxes or whatever. I cut the lines with a Tamiya cutter, that I use only for this purpose (pic 34). To stretch the topping lifts I glue them first to the mast and then tape the other end of the line to a weight. (In this case a glass jar) I move the weight so that the line touches the end of the yardarm, to which I then glue it (pic 35). For the signal halyards, I had built belaying benches that I glued to the railings of the signalling platform (pic 19). I threaded the halyards through the holes in the belaying benches and glued their ends to the
yardarm. Then I stretched them from the other end and secured them temporarily with small pieces of masking tape before gluing and cutting them (pic 36). This turned out to be an awfully complicated method. It would have been easier just to drill holes for the halyards through the platform just inside the railings. Then the halyards could easily have been threaded through the platform, stretched, glued and then cut along the underside of the platform. The antennas were threaded over the main yardarm and glued to the mizzen yardarm. Then I carefully stretched

them, then fastened them temporarily with masking tape to barbette No2 (pic 37) and glued them to the fore yardarm. Cutting them flush against the yardarm was a little scary, but again, the trick is to rest the hands on some steady object while cutting. The last step of the rigging was to add the isolators, small drops of white glue that I then painted dark grey. When done with the rigging, I glued the railings of the main deck with diluted
white glue. Then I fitted the guns, the ships boats, the catapult and the airplane. The last step, as always, was to conceal all glue stains with a layer of clear matt, and then to ‘work’ all surfaces with thin uneven layers of matt and half matt lacquer. The underwater hull got the glossier layers and the worn parts of the deck the mattest ones. I premiered my Roma at Scale Modelworld in Telford 2014, where she won the Gold medal in her class.
CONCLUSION
Building Trumpeter’s Roma was a pleasure. The shortcomings of the kit are greatly overshadowed by its general good quality and by the fact this is the first kit of an Italian battleship in this scale. In the late seventies Tamiya released their classic battleship models in 1:350. Two ships of each of the major naval powers were issued. For some reason Tamiya stopped just short of the Italian navy. However there is still time Tamiya;
there are still no kits of the Littorio and the Vittorio Veneto in this scale. Please do it! Furthermore I think that waterline joints should be prohibited! ●

his model was created by customising a re-release of Tamiya's 1:10 RC Fast Attack Vehicle, adding my own custom 3D printed parts plus some cool scale accessories from other companies. I am a huge fan of all the Tamiya classics and the FAV has been on my wish list since back in the '80s when it was first released. Many other builders have created some very cool variants of this kit and I wanted to have a go myself at building something
a little different than just replicating the box art.

REAL WORLD INSPIRATION
The front bumper, side racks, rear gunner's cage and the roof-mounted weapons were all designed after the real world Desert Patrol Vehicles (DPV) that were created for the US Navy SEALs. The parts were designed in CAD software and then printed in tough nylon with a polished finish. The driver was created by modifying a McFarlane seven-inch action figure from their military series and the original FAV driver's legs were painted to match using Tamiya Acrylics. I used a sharp craft knife to cut and reposition his limbs to fit the existing steering wheel and held everything together with hot glue. Tamiya Acrylic paints were also used throughout to colour match everything to my references.

The grenade launcher, rucksack and personal weapon in the side racks again came from McFarlane’s military figures. Up top, the soon to be added gunner gets to ride in one of Axial's scale seats. Out the back the rear-mounted engine is of my own design and was created to fit over the existing gearbox. It is the same design I used for my sand rail, but this time with a different exhaust fitted more becoming of a military vehicle. The wheels are the stock FAV items with a new outer cover, which I designed to look like the beadlock rims used on the Navy SEAL vehicles. I found a couple of different types of wire mesh at my local craft store to add the small details that help make this car look as close to the original as possible. The model uses Tamiya’s stock electronics as the main chassis has plenty of room to hide everything. For those late night desert operations a Tamiya lighting kit was used to power four LEDs in the front bumper.
The driver figure began life as a McFarlane seven-inch action figure

THE EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
As you can see, James is very talented and has created a true one-off FAV with cool touches and realistic scale features. He is making quite a name for himself in personalising vehicles, becoming famous on sites such as Iconic RC with his creations. Joe Brown got in touch with James so that we could create this article on his marvellous reworking of Tamiya's classic FAV. ●
The modified Tamiya kit is a good match for the real deal!

TAMIYA 1:35 FRENCH AMX-13 LIGHT TANK
T
he French contingent of Tamiya's 1:35 Military Miniature Series is boosted by this new model of the French AMX-13 light tank. This interesting vehicle employed an oscillating turret, which was made of two halves, with the gun fitted to the upper half. When it fired, the whole upper half recoiled. This design helped facilitate the AMX-13's auto-loader. The tank was produced over the period of 1952-1987 and exported to a number of other countries' militaries in addition to its use by French forces. Different variants were produced, including 75mm, 90mm gun, 105mm gun and anti-tank missile AMX-13s. Tamiya's new kit comes with highly detailed one-piece flexible tracks of the rubber-pad type and comes with a commander torso figure for use in the cupola. Two marking options will be found on the decal sheet. In these photos we can see some key aspects such as the cast texture on the turret and hatch mouldings, the moulded fabric-effect 'bellows' between the upper and lower turret halves and the large engine fan grille with internal detail. Full build coming to TMMI soon. â—?

n many ways Soviet Russia was under-prepared for the Axis invasion of June 1941. One telling deficiency was in self-propelled guns that could take on German armour. This remained unaddressed right through to Autumn 1942, when the blueprints for the SU-76 self-propelled gun were finally laid down. The SU-76 eventually became the SU-76M, a vehicle that would become the second-most produced Russian armoured vehicle in WWII after the T-34. The SU-76M was armed with a ZiS-3 76.2mm gun variant, and could destroy most types of German tank. It featured a hair-raising open-topped fighting compartment that, while it allowed better communication and visibility on the battlefield, left its crew poorly protected from shrapnel and the harsh climate. Nonetheless, it proved excellent on poor surfaces, where – unlike tanks – it could keep up with infantry in a vital support role. Tamiya's kit is a newly-tooled 1:35 scale production that's 146mm in length and 78mm in width. The model's 76.2mm gun features a detailed recoil mechanism, recuperator, operation handles and more. The link-and-length track's top runs are constructed using a jig, included in the kit and parts are included to recreate two types of ammunition. Two markings-options and three figures are offered in the box. ●

KIT PREVIEW EBBRO 1:20 MCLAREN HONDA MP4-30 2015 MIDDLE SEASON ● KIT NO.EMSF-1 NO.14
The 2015 MP4-30 was perhaps not one of McLaren’s finest cars, but Ebbro’s new 1:20 kit of it is on the front row of the grid
PUSH THE BUTTON (AND FERNANDO’S TOO)
L
ast season’s McLaren MP4-30 F1 car was not exactly a resounding success (to say the least) but it was a good looking machine, thanks largely to its minimal sponsors’ logos and overall metallic black colour scheme. The bright orange ‘swooshes’ on the nose and airboxes add the perfect flourish to the dark paintwork. Ebbro have been quite quick off the mark with this release of the all-black, mid-season MP4-30, tooling up during the season in which the car was competing and releasing the kit only recently. The model follows standard Formula 1 car kit doctrine in its construction, so anyone who has built a Tamiya F1 kit will feel at home here. This is not coincidental; Ebbro’s founder, Mr Makoto Kiya, was Tamiya’s chief designer for many years and was responsible for some of the company’s most iconic kits and his unique style is echoed in the exquisite polystyrene mouldings found here. The model does not include an engine, just a gearbox (to which the rear suspension is mounted) and it has that has been subject to significant aerodynamic contouring with aero panels that fit over the top, so it’s not much to look at. This lack of internal detail makes the kit much quicker and easier to build and of course, eliminates the danger of ill-fitting body parts too. The suspension is broken down into sensibly sized parts that have very positive location tabs for maximum
30 March 2016 TMMI 245
p 30 McLarenF1 Pre 245MN.indd 30
strength and ease of assembly. The front wheels do not steer, but there’s a good reason for this; the steering rack is depicted in two parts that are far more realistic than an older style, workable (and thus over-scale) one-piece item that would pass through a hole in the nose of the car. The cockpit detail is limited to the seat and steering wheel which, apart from the foot-pedals (absent here) is pretty much all that’s inside a modern F1 car’s ‘office’ anyway. The seat harnesses will be found on the decal sheet and this is one area where the modeller might wish to use some aftermarket parts; I always peer into model car cockpits (yes, I know, I’m an F1 nerd) and being greeted by decal seatbelts usually leaves me feeling rather short-changed. The wings – front and rear – have taken over from an artfully exposed DFV engine to become the focal point on a modern Formula 1 car and Ebbro have done a decent job of them, considering their injection-moulded medium. Carbon-fibre effect decals are included for the inner faces of the rear wing’s end-plates and some smaller patches on the front wing too, but it will be up to the modeller to apply composite-effect decalling to other areas where it’s exposed, most noticeably on the
suspension elements. There are some fairly useful images online of the mid-season MP4-30. The decal sheet is printed with flair and the graduated shading between the black and orange parts of the aforementioned ‘swooshes’ is quite smooth. The sheet comes with driver logos for both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button but as you might expect, a driver figure is not included (this would surely entail another level of license fee costs). The Pirelli P Zero tyres are close to perfect and come with their red sidewall logos (to show they are super-softs) already tampo-printed on. A quick swipe with some sandpaper over the treads will give them lightly scrubbed appearance, as if the model has done a couple of test laps of the circuit. It really doesn’t matter to this author that the subject of Ebbro’s newest kit was an ‘also ran’, it’s great to have a new Formula 1 car in 1:20 and a recent one at that. Excellent detail and decals make this model an appealing prospect. ● MN

Pete Smith performs an out-of-the-box build of Tamiya/ Italeri's 1:35 M24 Chaffee
T
he latest armour release from Tamiya makes effective use of a well known and much loved Italeri kit, with some added new parts to enhance the original model. The venerable M24 Chaffee comes with a metal barrel, new link-length tracks plus a couple of sprues from Tamiya’s Allied Accessory Set as well as a new .50cal MG for the turret. There’s also a commander figure included. The original Italeri parts, which make up the bulk of the kit, are in the main well formed but it does look like Tamiya possibly tweaked the moulds. However there are quite a few ejector-pin marks and some flash to deal with during assembly.
CONSTRUCTION
We start up by building the drive sprockets and here Tamiya instruct you to use the single long run of track to align the sprockets correctly. A nice touch which makes fitting the tracks
easier later on. The lower hull and rear plate are built up next followed by the swing-arms and suspension parts. Here, some flash is evident but it’s nothing a quick swipe with a file and the edge of a scalpel won’t sort out. The road wheels and return rollers all have nice bolt detail and after gluing together benefit from a bit of sanding on the running faces. The whole suspension set up is very solid with a good positive fit of the arms. Once the wheels were glued in place the tracks can be tackled. Again, Tamiya provide specific instructions and if you build them in the sequence shown you should have no problems at all. The tracks are moulded in a grey colour and do have loads of pin marks on them. I concentrated on those that would be seen, mostly on the lower inside runs but didn’t bother with the rest. Weathering and pigments will hide any on the outer surfaces later on. The tracks

and once done look great. Finally the wheel hubcaps can be fitted after sanding down another raised ejector pin mark on the top of each cap. Once the upper deck was in place, the fenders can be mounted which actually almost hides the top run of tracks. A small lip on the inside of the fenders was removed as this is for the side skirts, which I decided not to fit. The fender braces – parts B29 & B30 – need a bit of sanding and scraping in order to remove another pin mark on each brace. The hull machine gun barrel was drilled out and the headlight brush-guards were thinned slightly, as they are quite thick. The tools also benefit from a good clean up, but look fine once on the model. There are loads of small handles to add to the hull that are difficult to clean once removed from the runners. I glued them in place, then used the edge of a scalpel blade the next day to smooth out any rough edges. The only issue I had with the hull was some excessive flash on the suspension parts but it all went together extremely well.
This edition of the M24 comes with link-length tracks which go together well
The roadwheels’ hub caps are individual mouldings
The bow machine gun can be seen in place here, as well as the headlights’ brushguards
Just enough track sag from the included is present to look realistic
TURRET
The turret starts off with the barrel and here there is a guide in the instructions showing where the plastic barrel needs to be cut before fitting the metal replacement barrel. The two halves of the turret are tricky to glue so care needs to be taken to line them up correctly. Once dry, the gun assembly and the front mantlet were cemented on. After drying, some sanding is needed on the joints to blend it all together. I also added the missing weld beads on the mantlet by using some of the sprue from the tracks, heated over a candle then stretched. This was glued onto the turret and then a blade was used to add the weld beads by pressing into the slightly melted plastic. More handles and fixtures went onto the turret and then finally the commander’s hatch was added. The .50cal is a Tamiya item and as such is easy to build up and looks great,
The ageing but still decent turret captures the complex shapes of the original
Additional weld seams were added to the turret by the author
The metal gun barrel will be found inside the kit box

The assembled model awaits the first layers of paint. Crew stowage adds to the realism
only issue I had with the hull was some excessive flash on “theThesuspension parts but it all went together extremely well... ” sitting in the stowed position. The commander figure is again a new item and once placed in the turret helps to depict the vehicle in its role as the eyes of the US Army. Finally the stowage can be added to the model using the new parts in the kit. There’s plenty of choice here, from fuel cans and different ammo boxes to a nice selection of tarps and packs. I glued some of the small packs onto the model then used narrow Tamiya tape for securing straps. The rest of the stowage was left loose for painting later. After a wash in soapy water to remove any oils and dust, the model was primed using Ammo grey primer then left for a couple of days to fully cure.
PAINTING
I began by first spraying the lower hull, wheels and tracks in a good solid coat of black. This was followed by Mr Hobby H52 Olive Drab No1. While spraying the lower hull I concentrated on the wheel centres only and a small bit of the hull that would be seen between the wheels. The rest of the model received a solid coat of paint. Tamiya XF-15 Flat Flesh was now added to the Olive Drab in small amounts then carefully sprayed into the centres of panels and on the high portions of some parts such as the hull hatches, ventilator covers and wheel hubs. My method here is similar to the modulation style of painting

but with less defined colour changes between areas painted in different tones. Further amounts of Flesh were added until I was happy with the effect. The tracks and wheels were then hand painted using Vallejo colours and a steady hand. The rest of the detail painting on the model was now tackled, starting with the packs on the turret and front hull. The rest of the packs and boxes were also painted up using a variety of Vallejo colours. The model was now given a gloss coat using Alclad 2 Aqua Gloss ready for decalling. In the kit there are just two decal options, one vehicle in Italy and one in Germany. I went for the Italian campaign option. The decals performed well and went on with no problems.
The olive drab of was created with layers of acrylic paints, gradually adding lighter colours as the application process took place
WEATHERING
Next, some fine paint chipping was applied to the model using a combination of Vallejo colours, a sponge and a fine brush. Only the bare minimum of wear was added in order to depict a relatively new vehicle. Most of the wear was confined to the hatches and other obvious places of paint damage. Once I was happy

with the effects, another coat of gloss was sprayed on to seal the decals ready for washes and filters. I first applied a thin colour-wash mixed from dark oil paints around all the recesses and details to accentuate the detail on the model. Once this was dry, some oil dot fading was applied to the turret, front glacis and rear hull. This step enables you to add subtle streaking and colour variations to the model. Again only the bare minimum was applied. This was followed up once dry with a filter using Wilder’s No.19 Grey Brown filter. After a couple of days drying time the model was given a coat of matt varnish. Once the matt coat had cured, all the gloss areas such as the commander’s vision blocks and lights were picked out using
suitable gloss colours. The remainder of the stowage was now glued to the model, not forgetting of course to include stowage straps cut from fine tape. A small amount of fuel spillage was also applied to the filler caps using Mig Productions Oil and Grime mix. A mixture of pigments went on next, concentrating on the lower hull and only applying small amounts to the upper hull and turret. Following this, some Vallejo oily steel was carefully painted onto the sprocket teeth and track guide horns, then more pigment mix was brushed over these areas. Graphite powder rubbed into the track faces with a finger finished off the tracks. Finally I could add the commander and a carbon fibre antenna and the model was complete.
The stowage items were paint before fixing to the vehicle

V CONCLUSION This build has been a
pleasant surprise for me. The base kit is as old as the hills but still has the potential to build up well. The inclusion of extras and tweaks from Tamiya only enhance what’s already there. Okay, there are better kits out there but for a stress-free, out of the box build this one is hard to beat. With a limited parts count and small size of the model you could quite happily build this in a weekend; perfect for a beginner or someone with limited time. I’m so happy with the final result that the only things I would change would be to add a couple of clear lenses to the front lights and include the option of raised vision 'scopes on the drivers and co-drivers hatches but that’s just me being picky! Thanks to the Editor for supplying the kit and for the opportunity to build something different from my usual fare. ●

www.tamiya.com www.hobbyco.net Tamiya's new 1:12 Repsol Honda RC213V '14 is soon to hit the shops and to go with it, you might wish to buy the new front fork set. This upgrade includes a pair of machined metal, gold anodised downtubes, front hubs plus moulded brake calliper mounts, rear suspension spring and polycaps. They offer a noticeable increase in realism over the standard kit parts as they are so visible on the finished model. MN 1:12 HONDA RC213V '14 FRONT FORK SET (12667)

www.luckymodel.com Kinetic's new 1:48 Su-33 is reviewed this month and to go with it, Dream Model have created a handy photo-etched set for its cockpit. On the modestly sized, pre-coloured fret are an instrument panel, side consoles, seat pads and harness plus ejector pulls and other small parts. Also new is a detail set for Kinetic's J-15 conversion for the Su-33 kit and includes resin rocket rails, colour and plain PE frets, decal sheet plus clear film for the instrument panel faces. www.hauler.cz Like any kit, Tamiya's recently issued Somua S35 has the potential for up-detailing and Hauler have provided much of what's needed in this extremely useful set. The most important of the upgrades are photo-etched straps for the distinctive hull-side stowage bins, replacing the moulded-in detail. The next significant new part is the etched mesh screen over the headlight, followed by lovely little position-keeping lights on the track-guards in resin. There's a lot more in the set and it's very much a worthwhile purchase if building Tamiya's S35. Highly recommended. MN 1:35 SOMUA S35 DETAILS (HLU35089) FOR TAMIYA

MIRROR MODELS, IRELAND
BRITISH MORRIS C8 QUAD MK.III www.mirror-models.com SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, R, WS KIT NUMBER; 35401 Mirror Models have been around for a while now and since their launch, they have upgraded the quality of their kits and packaging too. This is most evident with the newest models, which look as slick and professional as any upper-end product currently on the market. The Morris Quad is a favourite subject for many armour modellers and this new kit is a very modern take on the vehicle. Moulded over nine sprues (including one in clear), the model builds up from a significant quantity of parts, some of which are extremely small tweezers and optical magnifiers at the ready. The main ‘bodyshell’ is a one-piece moulding and sports some impressively fine detail; in the same ballpark as Bronco and AFV Club. Flat panels such as doors and floor sections etc., are free from ejector-pin marks and no flash at all was present. The chassis (Mk.II and Mk.III can both be built form the kit) builds up element by element and the steering appears to be steerable, or posable at the least. A basic engine block with exhaust manifold and radiator fan is provided and the chassismounted winch and its pulleywheels are all present. The cabin is fully outfitted for the crew and includes all driving controls. MN

BRITISH MORRIS C8 QUAD MK.III NO.5 BODY www.mirror-models.com SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, R, WS KIT NUMBER; 35400 Alongside the familiar ‘beetleback’ bodied Morris C8 Quad, Mirror Models have also launched the ‘No.5’ bodied variant, which uses a more conventional-looking, truck-type body over the same chassis and powertrain. The kit features all the same refinements and high parts-count (220 plus) as its brother and comes with an additional sprue that carries the internal bulkhead, rear deck floor and the large canvas roof. The latter component is extremely well moulded and shows subtle signs of the structural ribbing that supports it. There is no fabric texture in evidence here, and quite right too, it would not be visible at this scale. Although this version looks longer than the other machine, it is in fact every bit as compact as the beetle-back, bar a couple of millimetres. The overhang of the canvas top is moulded integrally along the sides and rear elevation and it looks a little too uniform in shape to properly replicate wrinkly cloth, so the modeller might wish to apply a layer of putty so some ridges and creases can be worked into it. The tie-down rope is also moulded in and it looks spot on, no need to replace this. MN
A sophisticated, finely-detailed and comprehensive production, inside and out. A favourite subject too.
An appealing second version of the Morris Quad, with boxy No.5 body
Tricky to add that subtle but necessary weighted look to the solid vinyl tyres; DEF Model might oblige?

WINGNUT WINGS, NEW ZEALAND EBBRO, JAPAN
CITROËN DS19 www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, CP, WS KIT NUMBER; 25005 Ebbro continue their French theme with one of their newest releases, the iconic Citroën DS19. This famous car was very futuristic when launched in 1955, making use of advanced technologies and design styles. Production finished in 1975. Ebbro’s kit is completely new and uses modern moulding technology to create the complex and unique bodyshell. The model is fully detailed, with a near complete engine (just add wiring), working steering and openable bonnet and front doors. A very interesting development with this kit is the way all of the exterior chrome trim strips are moulded as individual (plated) parts, offering a potentially huge improvement in final appearance. The modeller could even strip off the plating, remove moulding seams and re-paint with Alclad II or similar, should they so wish. The model’s detail is very Tamiya-like and the overall feel is one of sophistication and precision and will be a rewarding project for lovers of truly classic cars. MN

ALBATROS B.II EARLY www.wingnutwings.com SCALE; 1:32 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; 1213 Newly issued from Wingnut Wings is the beautiful Albatros B.II (early), a particularly graceful-looking machine and one that was in production before, throughout and after the war too. Wingnut’s new model is presented in the now familiar and much loved format, with almost everything you need to produce a stunning model right from the box. The kit parts are moulded with great finesse in grey polystyrene and include an astonishing replica of the Daimler-Mercedes D.I/D.II engine (100hp or 120hp versions can be built) and all the modeller needs to add are the ignition leads and some other pipework. As we always mention in reviews of Wingnut’s new kits, the instructions are a work of art, featuring colour-rendered 3D illustrations of the model during assembly with written instructions too, where appropriate. Reference images are distributed throughout and you’ll want to keep the booklet once the kit is done. The decal sheet includes photoreal panels of ‘wood’ for the aircraft’s fuselage plus cockpit interior. There’s so much more to discuss about this model but for now, let’s just say that it is exquisite; one example from one of the best lines of model kits there has ever been. MN

DORNIER DO215 B-5 www.revell.de/en, @RevellGermany or facebook.com/revell SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 04925 Revell, like some other manufacturers, makes use of kit sprues from other companies from time to time and that’s what we have here in the form of the 1:48 Do215 B-5 nightfighter, which was originally released by ICM. Revell’s kit box is much larger than those used by ICM for their twinengined bombers but there’s nothing extra inside except air, so it must just a standard box-size used by Revell. The kit parts are moulded in ICM’s warm-grey polystyrene across five sprues, plus one in clear. The decal sheet provides two markings options; a grey/ green machine of Stab II. NJG2, Leeuwarden 1942 and an overall black aircraft from Giltze-Rijen 1941. The kit is very comprehensive, featuring a finely detailed cockpit, a decent bomb bay with internal structure and fuel tank, a pair of engines with their bearers and main undercarriage bays sporting inner rib detail. MN
MIRAGE IIIC www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:32 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; 2505 A couple of years after the release of their 1:32 F-104 Starfighter kits, Italeri created this all new model of the Dassault Mirage IIIC deltawinged jet. It comes with six decal choices; three French aircraft and one option each for South Africa, Switzerland and Israel. These come on two sheets along with masses of data stencilling and look absolutely beautiful; Italeri’s decals are amongst the very best out there these days. The model comes with a decent cockpit and ejection seat, plus a replica of the engine and its intake ducts. Control surfaces are moulded individually and the undercarriage can be fitted in the raised or lowered position. The manufacturer includes a decent range of underwing stores, including 500 and 1,300 litre drop tanks, Matra and Sidewinder missiles, the correct combinations of which are clearly explained in the instructions. Overall detail on the kit is of a good standard and while the panel lines appear a little bit too prominent in the bare plastic, they will look much more natural under a layer of paint and weathering. HONG MODEL, CHINA
SOVIET ZSU-2304M/MZ SHILKA www.hongmodel.com SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; H-5001 Hong Model is an entirely new company to TMMI, but their first release looks likes it is the result of years of kit-manufacturing experience. The model depicts the Soviet ZSU-2304M/MZ Shilka selfpropelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG) and from an up-close inspection of the sprues, it looks mightily impressive. The kit is moulded in dark green plastic and comes with photo-etched brass mesh screens for the engine deck, clear vision blocks, braided copper wire and decals for Iraqi, USSR, East German and Russian examples. From looking at the sprues it would seem that the quad-gun can elevate and depress but the linkages and location pins that might allow this are tiny and delicate. Detail throughout is pleasingly in-scale with no thick-eared mouldings at all. The guns themselves are very well done, with hollowedout flash suppressors and integral water-cooling pipes that are separated from the barrels along their lengths. As far as talking points go, the tracks’ ears will be burning; each link comes with two, separately moulded guide horns that will need to be accurately cemented in place before the links themselves are joined; a fiddly task and one with the potential for misalignment. Overall, this is highly competent model that captures the look of the Shilka perfectly. MN
KITTYHAWK, CHINA
XF5U-1 FLYING FLAPJACK www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; KH80135 Vought’s XF5U-1 ‘Flying Flapjack’ is a bizarre-looking but well known test aircraft, developed as a fighter in the 1940s then abandoned as the jet age became inevitable. Kittyhawk have now put forward their offering in the popular scale of 1:48, the perfect size for this subject and it’s makes a very appealing project. The model is not overwhelmingly complex, coming on just four modestly sized sprues of grey polystyrene and one in clear. The photo-etched brass content is restricted to just one small fret carrying the pilot seat’s harnesses. Decals offer markings for an overall natural metal airframe, one in dark gloss blue plus a third ‘Uncle Sam’ scheme with a massive decal of said patriot for the aircraft’s ‘back’, along with red and white stars. The overall metal scheme stands out as the easiest on the eye. The detail is, as we have come to expect from this maker, very finely rendered, with recessed panel junctions and raised rivets; don’t worry, the latter effect is reasonably subtle. This looks like quite a fairly quick build and certainly one that will stand out in one’s model display case. MN
Superb surface detail, excellent guns barrels, delicate and in-scale photo-etched brass parts

KINETIC MODEL KITS, HONG KONG SUE SUPER ÉTENDARD/MODERNISÉ www.luckymodel.com SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; K48061 The Super Étendard is a French strike-fighter developed for deployment from aircraft carriers, entering service in 1978. It has a notorious history – in the UK at least – as it was flown by the Argentinian Navy against the British Royal Navy during the 1982 Falklands War, launching its Exocet missiles to sink British shipping. Kinetic’s kit is an all-new production and is remarkably complex, featuring a plethora of individually moulded aerials, sensors and other small parts for the airframe exterior as well as open or closed ventral airbrakes, individual control surfaces and leading edge slats, folded/extended wingtips and a full complement of underwing stores, including the infamous Exocet, plus drop tanks and air-to-air missiles. Surface detail is fantastic, striking the right balance between scale size and visibility. The cockpit instrument panels are very finely rendered indeed and the seats just need harnesses to make them look complete. Markings supplied include; French Navy, Argentinian Navy and Iraqi Air Force. MN
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
ULTIMATE SABRE LIMITED EDITION www.eduard.com SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, R, PE, PCM, WS KIT NUMBER; 1163 Eduard have put Hasegawa’s 1:48 F-86 Sabre kit to good use here, adding their own special touch in the form of two photo-etched frets (with prepainted instrument panels) plus a resin ejection seat, pre-cut canopy masks and new decals for five colourful machines, all but one of which are Korean War aircraft. The fifth is a Detroit AFB-based Sabre (1952) and is only marginally less colourful. The plastic parts are of a very high quality and little if anything needs doing to them, although the polystyrene used is quite hard. Eduard’s additions will really spruce up the cockpit but you might want to use different harnesses as photoetched belts can be tricky to lay flat against the seat. The real star of this release is the decal sheet, which has been printed by Cartograf in Italy for Eduard. It is a stunning production in perfect register and a gloss finish, ideal when using setting solutions. An excellent use of an older kit. MN

BRONCO, HONG KONG
PZ.KPFW.III AUSF.A (SD.KFZ.141) www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; GB7004 The Panzer III ausf. A was a 1937 prototype design, of which only ten were made and just eight were armed. It has an interesting, slightly low-slung appearance and with its five large road wheels, has a distinctive look of its own while still clearly being a member of the Pz.III family. Bronco Models’ kits are always refined productions and this is no exception; there is some exceptional detailing here as well as some nice little touches; the inclusion of the reverse pattern of the trackguards’ non-slip texture on their undersides being just one example. The model’s external coil spring/swing arm suspension is depicted in full. There is no interior detail within the hull but the turret is well fitted out with twin MG34s, the 3.7cm KwK36 L/46.5 main gun plus seats and rotation elevation/gear. The interior of the turret ‘shell’ has not be forgotten either, with the hinges for the vision ports and PE inner hatch frames all supplied. There are five large ejector pin marks on the turret ceiling but they are raised and thus much easier to remove/ conceal; not they’ll be easy to see anyway. A fantastic model! MN
KINETIC MODEL KITS, HONG KONG SU-33 FLANKER D www.luckymodel.com SCALE; 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; K48062 The Su-33 Flanker D is the carrier-adapted variant of the mighty Su-27 and features an enlarged wing surface area, reinforced airframe and undercarriage plus folding wingtips and many other alterations. If anything, the Flanker D (initially called Flanker K) is even more imposing than its land-based brother. Even from a brief look at its sprues, Kinetic’s new kit must rank as one of their finest productions to date. The cockpit sports some lovely raised and recessed detail with an ejector seat that, with the addition of some harnesses, could look as good as any aftermarket resin part. Options are provided for open or closed engine air-intake louvres and the undercarriage legs are highly detailed subassemblies. It would appear that virtually nothing from the visible areas of the model has been neglected, with particular attention paid to the canopy frame (so often ignored) and the various sensors adorning the cockpit coaming. A really impressive-looking kit, let’s hope it builds up as good as it looks! MN

KIT PREVIEW AFV CLUB 1:35 BILSTEIN-DREHKRAN 3T AUF BÜSSING-NAG 4500A ● KIT NO.AF35279
TMMI’s Editor examines AFV Club’s extraordinary 1:35 Büssing-NAG crane truck, a complex and satisfying model
BÜSSING’S BOX OF TRICKS
I
n this release, AFV Club have taken their superb Büssing-NAG truck mouldings and added new parts for a Bilstein three-ton cane, creating a workshop vehicle that will appeal equally to diorama builders, extreme weatherers and fans of WW2 German trucks. The truck itself is an amazingly elaborate production, with the chassis, suspension, drivetrain, engine and cabin bodywork building up piece by tiny piece. With patience, a sharp scalpel, good tweezers, bright lights and a optical magnifier (if you need one), the kit is a potentially fantastic miniature reproduction of this distinctive-looking truck. By adding the Bilstein crane, AFV Club have upped the detail levels even further, offering an experienced modeller a deliciously challenging model project. The crane alone takes up nearly four pages of the instruction
booklet which gives you clue to its complexity, plus the rear deck on which the Bilstein unit is mounted, plus the ‘tool box’ behind the cabin. You’d think a truck model would be quite a straightforward affair wouldn’t you? This release proves otherwise. The model’s parts themselves are highly refined, with lovely touches such as open-moulded louvres on the engine covers, very subtle wood-grain texture on the floor of the crane deck, a choice of radiator grilles and crane data placards provided on the decal sheet. The tyres are moulded in semi-soft black vinyl, a length of cord is included for the crane’s cables and photo-etched brass parts are provided for the radiator grille, fuel-can seams and other small sheet-metal fittings. Three markings options are suggested; two Eastern Front vehicles in overall panzergrau, plus
Data placards and number plates are provided, as well as photo-etched brass and cord for the crane’s cables
a much more interesting one in green-brown with a camouflage pattern in olive-green; the green being restricted to the cab and toolbox. In summing this kit up, it must be remembered that this is a model is aimed at more experienced modellers. It has a huge parts-count and there are some extremely delicate and small moulded components involved in its construction, but this is not a criticism as such, just something to note. AFV Club’s Büssing-NAG is one of those kits that sometimes slip under the radar, but it should not be ignored, it’s fantastic. ● MN

SINGLE MODEL NO.01 INDUSTRIA MECHANIKA FANTASTICAL FISH SHAPED SUBMERSIBLE
MICHAEL RINALDI, RINALDI STUDIO PRESS ISBN 978-0-9883363-0-8 www.rinaldistudiopress.com $25 plus shipping Mike Rinaldi has written articles for TMMI in the past and he is a well known modeller with some extraordinary painting and weathering skills. For the first book in his new series entitled 'Single Model' (the name says it all) he has focused on the fabulously retro ‘Fantastical Fished-Shaped Submersible’ from Michael Fichtenmayer's Industria Mechanika model kit line. The matt-paper cover and industrial-style graphics give the book the appealing feel of a small workshop guide, albeit the very slick production of, say, a 1970s Mercedes-Benz owner's manual. Inside, the author describes in plentiful pictures the construction and finishing of the model; although the painting and weathering stages merge to form a fluid, constantly evolving process that results in the delicious, visually engaging colouration and patination of the finished piece. If you like Mike's work (I love it) this compact but full volume will really float your (fishing) boat. MN
THE STORY OF REVELL KITS, VOLUME 1 1950-1986
JEAN-CHRISTOPHE CARBONEL, HISTOIRE & COLLECTIONS ISBN 978-2-35250-447-4 www.casematepublishing.co.uk If you are a scale modeller with more than one or two grey hairs on your head, there are few better ways to get a nostalgia fix than reading a book on a kit manufacturer that reaches back to the earlier days of model making. If the subject is one of the giants with a vast and widely varied range of model such as Revell, then all the better still. JC Carbonel's recent softback, ninety-two page production on Revell's first epoch – the 1950s to the mid-1980s – employs an easy-to-follow format; the text snakes around images of familiar and very nostalgic kit box-tops plus photos of completed models, snippets from instruction sheets, promotional leaflets and other ephemera, punctuated by sub-headings for each year from 1952 to 1986. The photos are fabulous and there are many models you'll have forgotten about in here, making the book rather 'un-put-downable'. If you have built Revell kits over the years, you'll drift off in a comforting bubble of nostalgia when reading it. MN
SPITFIRE IN MY WORKSHOP
DAVID GLEN, BROWN & BROWN BOOKS ISBN 978-0-952-6907-2-6 www.brownandbrown.co.uk Trying to write a review of a book whose subject is a sublime work of (modelling) art is rather difficult. It's so easy to be distracted by the subject that the review ends up as a description of the model, not the book, and that's not really the point of the review. In this case though, it's almost impossible to avoid this. The subject – a 1:5 scale Spitfire Mk.I, fully scratchbuilt from differing woods, sheets of aluminium printers' plate, brass, resin, wire and more – is such an exquisite creation that I want to just talk about how it looks and how it was made. The author created the main structure from wood, replicating all the fuselage frames; the wing is based around an oak main spar with a wood-clad, foam-filled inner core. Over this strong airframe, he applied thin aluminium litho plate from the print industry, shaping and burnishing it to take on the Spitfire's familiar form. The model was left unpainted to show off the metallic skin, access hatches, panel lines, screws and rivets to full effect. It's an astonishing achievement and one that needs hours of close-up study to fully appreciate. This is at least partially possible as the model is now on display at the RAF Museum at Hendon in north London. The book is a large format, hardback 'coffee-table' production of 192 pages (plus covers) and documents the model's creation, or at least the highlights, as there's way too much involved in this 1:5 Spitfire to show in one book. The first forty-seven or so pages comprise a gallery of the finished thing and this was the selling point for me; I could stare at the images for days. The book is a high-quality production befitting this extraordinary model and well worth buying if you love this most famous of British aircraft. MN

KIT PREVIEW EBBRO 1:24 CITROËN 2CV PICKUP ● KIT NO.25004
Ebbro’s new 1:24 2CV depicts a car made in Slough!
FABULOUSLY FRENCH, OR IS IT?
E
bbro don’t just make sports car models! This fact is amply proven with one of the company’s most recent releases, the wonderfully gallic Citroën 2CV pickup, which is a wholly new kit with no Tamiya parts. Well, we say Gallic, but this pickup version has a slightly more convoluted history than you might think. After some success with the British Royal Marines, a 2CV pickup proved to be a very practical idea and Citroën’s UK plant in Slough, west of London, created their own version of the vehicle. It was based on the Fourgonnette with the addition of a new panel to the rear of the cabin, but the lower portions of the rear bodywork were fundamentally the same
as the van. A new bonnet mascot proudly states ‘Made in Britain’ too! Ebbro’s kit also makes use of their Fourgonette kit’s parts, replacing the rear section with new mouldings for the open-topped pickup bed, the outer faces of which were corrugated. Like the real thing, the 1:24 model is quite sparse in its mechanical systems, but with finely-moulded and accurate detailing from Ebbro the kit really captures the quirky look of the lightweight utility truck. No engine is provided in this release, so the bonnet is a glue-down part. The grille is a separate component and whilst its louvres are not open-moulded, it does receive some realistic brightwork and badge,
Skinny tyres look accurate but sidewalls are plain
formed from plated, self-adhesive, photo-etched metal. The super-skinny tyres in the kit are fantastic replicas of the real ones (but without sidewall logos) and the suspension replicates the look of the original, but thankfully not its floaty action! The front wheels are steerable. This kit is both historically significant and wonderfully charismatic and it will be a fun one to weather up, with some mismatched, primered panels and rust streaks. ●MN MODEL SPEC EBBRO CITROËN 2CV PICKUP KIT NO.25004 SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1:24 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rob Henden builds Moebius Models' classic horror film kit, inspired by the 1935 film 'The Bride Of Frankenstein'
A
s a military model enthusiast I enjoy the diversity of vehicles and figures from many historical periods, but sometimes it’s nice to escape the constraints that such modelling projects impose and simply let my imagination go wild. In the past I have painted countless resin, vinyl and plastic kits from the world of fantasy, film, TV, and horror; vampires, monsters, and 'Terminators' included. This genre of model seems to have been popularised by companies such as Aurora. Founded in 1950, this company produced a range of mainstream plastic kits such as aircraft and vehicles but broke that pattern when they acquired a license from Universal Pictures to produce their first horror-based kit in 1961; Frankenstein’s monster. This was followed by many others such as Wolfman, Dracula and Jekyll and Hyde to name but a few. These groundbreaking models most often included alternative 'glow in the dark' (luminous) parts, usually the head and hands to add an extra dimension for the younger enthusiasts. I can remember holding the Hunchback's head up to the light and then viewing it either under the bed covers or in the cupboard under the stairs. Those were the days! Following the retirement of the original founders and subsequent take-overs of the company, several manufacturers both reproduced many of the original Aurora kits and continued to ape the style of them with additional models. Monogram did
The iconic hair including the silver/ white streaks are a work of art on the mouldings and paint up very convincingly
this using lurid fluorescent plastic colours, and later Polar Lights even used a 'tongue in cheek' brand name reflecting the original manufacturer's logo. One company that is currently producing kits in this tradition is Moebius Models, their choice of subjects being very similar to Aurora’s. But rather than relying on nostalgia, they have revisited the root subjects of some of the earlier kits using a fresh, more detailed and better researched approach. Moebius Models have worked on some of the earliest horror films from Bela Lugosi's version of Dracula to the subject of this feature, The Bride Of Frankenstein.
The Monster’s hands are beautifully sculpted with outstanding detail including veins!
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
When I first received the kit I was very impressed indeed. The box was beautifully designed with a large black and white still frame from the film, giving a good impression of the contents. On opening the box I was struck by the sheer volume of parts, it was jam packed with grey polystyrene plastic plus two clear sprues. The quality of the moulding was immaculate and practically no flash was present, the same model in resin or vinyl would be much more expensive and little work was required before painting. The next part to be assembled was the 'chaise longue', this piece of furniture is beautifully designed and moulded and the parts fitted so well that only a slightly generous amount of glue was required to assemble the whole thing
Deep buttoned upholstery can be painted as fabric or leather
The base follows the fine moulded quality, both the stone, and wood textures respond well to painting

V with no filler being required,
the resultant joins were well lined up and just a little sanding made a near perfect invisible seams on all of the parts. It is rare to find such well moulded parts on a plastic moulded kit and Moebius should be congratulated on the precise fit of these parts, it made assembly a joy, rather than a tedious task like many. Once assembled, the chaise longue was airbrushed using the Iwata Eclipse HP-SBS with a light orange/tan colour, covering both the wooden areas as well as the leather parts. Vallejo Burnt Umber was then carefully airbrushed in fine lines to create a wood grain effect and once I was satisfied, the wooden areas were sprayed with a mixture of Tamiya X-22 Clear with X-26 Clear Orange added to provide a varnished effect befitting a classic piece of furniture. As the original images in the film were black and white, the choice of colour for the leather upholstery was open to interpretation but I thought a dark plum red would be attractive. The wooden areas were masked carefully then a light red shade was applied as a base colour, using Warhammer's 'Gore Red'. A darkened shade of the red with a little black was then airbrushed into the folds and creases of the deep buttoned surface adding depth to the colour. Finally, a semi-gloss lustre was created using X-22 Clear lacquer lightly sprayed on.
CRACKED ACTOR
Unlike most of the figures I have assembled and painted in this large scale, those by Moebius are injection moulded plastic. Both Frankenstein's Monster and The Bride's head are moulded in several parts and they required careful assembly despite being accurately moulded. The 'Bride' figure could not have been easier to assemble, being just one front and two rear parts plus arms in two parts each. Of course, the attention applied to filling these parts would make or break the model. One of the most frustrating parts of assembly was matching up the halves
To enable the details on the two shelves to be more easily seen I increased the height of the wall which gives the figures a 'backdrop’
The texture was matched as closely as possible using car filler, which was textured with a piece of sponge. Random shapes were scribed to match the original parts
The chaise longue is very well produced, these are the main parts, the fit of parts is very good, with no filler required A simulation of wood grain was freehand airbrushed using a secondary dark brown shade, the carved moulding was dry brushed with a lighter brown to bring out the detail, and finally a coat of Tamiya clear was sprayed to give the furniture a more realistic finish The wooden parts were then masked using tape in preparation to spray the ‘leather’ upholstery The leather effect was painted using Warhammer shades of red and clear, varnished to add a sheen. The completed piece of furniture looks convincing on the base. The shelves are seen here; they were relocated as the bottles and jars would have been largely hidden from view by the figures
The many clear parts were glued together to produce a variety of laboratory equipment To simulate the vessels contents of ‘ghoulish’ liquids the parts were masked with tape and a variety of Tamiya clear colours were airbrushed Finally some of them were airbrushed using Tamiya clear Green, or Smoke to tint the glass colours for an ‘antique’ glass effect. Labels could be custom-made to name the contents
of the Bride's arms as they have the crepe bandages moulded around them, and it would prove to be quite demanding to hide the glued seams despite the moulding being very well done, patience is the key here and careful sanding was required, the film actually shows loose ends of these bandages hanging down, I resisted adding these but some could be added which would help to disguise the more difficult seams.
WATCH THAT MAN
Frankenstein's Monster has more parts to its
construction, but is by no means a complicated build. The torso is moulded in two parts as are the seated legs, upper-arms, forearms and boots. The flaps for the side pockets of the jacket are moulded as separate pieces to add depth. The lapels are moulded as an integral part of the jacket and would have benefitted by being separate pieces like the pocket flaps, so to improve these I used a new scalpel blade and cut the edges of the moulding to add definition and depth. If doing this project again I would have made new
The scene is now set, now only the figures to add! This far the model was a fun project, with the best yet to come

The likeness of Boris Karloff as this iconic monster is well captured, and like the ‘Bride’ is moulded in several parts, care again was taken of where the sewn seams should and shouldn’t be and disguising the hair joins without drawing attention to them
A great likeness of Elsa Lanchester. The head is composed of three well detailed mouldings.
The seams were quite well placed to disguise the joints, but the hair needed to be re-textured, seen here prior to using a pyrograph, a low-voltage soldering iron
lapels from Milliput putty to further improve the effect. The hands of the monster are moulded in halves and fit very well considering the fingers are in halves too! The texture of these is nicely done and again careful filling and sanding pays dividends.
SCARY MONSTERS
The painting process really does make all of the difference to any model and this piece really comes alive with a bit of colour applied. The bodies are fairly basic in their colouring, being basically black and white, but to make them interesting a little extra colour was added. The Bride's gown was airbrushed in Warhammer's 'Bleached Bone' over a basic Halfords automotive white primer I added subtle shading to this using a touch of yellow ochre/ orange brown shade. The bandaged arms, although well moulded would prove to show any obvious filled joins in the halves once painted and so careful shading was critical in making them convincing. The base colour used was Warhammer
'Desert Yellow', once dry this was highlighted using the drybrush technique with a whitened mixture of the Desert Yellow. Finally, the shaded areas separating the bandages was lined in using a darkened mixture of the base colour with burnt umber added. Viewing the film, the
Detail of the hands is extremely good with all of the veins and character lines. The metal staples are also present
Monster's sleeves are torn quite badly and the Bride's arm bandages have loose ends hanging, both of which are not depicted on the model, but as this was to be a 'straight out of the box' build (except the base modification) I chose to ignore this detail, but keen enthusiasts may wish to add it.
The Monster's lap was the only place on the model that required the use of filler, unfortunately it was an awkward area to both apply and sand. Both arms needed just a "smear” of automotive body filler
The prospect of having an uninteresting all black figure led me to use different tints to give variation to the figure as most black items of clothing can often vary according to dye pigments. In the case of the t-shirt, I airbrushed it using a dark green colour
WE ARE THE DEAD
The two characters each have their own distinctive skin tones and despite the original film images being in black and white, present a blank canvas to create some interesting effects. Both the Monster and the Bride had been re-animated from the dead and so neither
The shirt was then masked using tape to allow me to airbrush highlights on the jacket using a medium grey with a blue tint added. The whole of the figure was altered with different shades to add interest and weathering as in the original film he was dirty and dusty. His boots and trousers had more brown added to contrast from the jacket and t-shirt not really easy to see in the pictures

A darker flesh colour was airbrushed into the recessed areas of the Monster’s head, such as the mouth and eye-sockets
V would use the normal type
of flesh colour! So other colours would need to be experimented with to create new effects. As the Bride needed to have a more innocent and feminine look I chose to use my usual basic flesh colours i.e. white and burnt umber, but made a much paler mixture by using more white in the mix. The eyes were lightly airbrushed using ComArt Transparent Violet (www. airbrushes.com) which looks like eye makeup (or could it be bruises?) The damaged and bruised parts of her face were also airbrushed using the violet as other blue shades to increase the horror effects. The blood in the cuts were painted using Citadel's grandly named 'Blood for the Blood God' clear red paint, which looks suitably gory. The eyes are the most important detail in giving life to any figure and never more so than with the Bride. The placement of the irises were most important to portray the sheer horror in her face. The 'whites' of the eyes were painted matt white with a touch of burnt umber added and the iris of each eye was then painted with a dark greenish grey mixture, making sure that each one was as round as possible and that there was white showing all around them to create a 'shocked look'. A lighter greenish colour was then applied leaving a thin ring of the first iris colour showing, and then the black pupil of each eye was dotted in carefully.
The Bride’s head didn’t receive the same degree of shading in order to give a softer, more feminine look A light sheen was applied using a more pink Liquitex acrylic colour
A purple ink from Media was used to airbrush the bruised areas of the cuts and wounds
A pale purple helped to give the desired effect around the eyes on the Bride
DEAD MAN WALKING
Unlike the Bride the Monster's eyes are moulded as engraved details so the position of the irises is set. This makes placement easier but in my opinion less realistic than the Bride's round eyeballs. These were painted in various dark shades, with a red line at their edges and some extra use of red to make the whites look bloodshot. The bags under the eyes are nicely detailed and these were lined-in to add definition. The lips were made to look bluish and dry to add horror to his character.
LITTLE WONDER
This project was a real joy to build and paint. As well as being very well moulded and presented, it didn’t break the bank either, being a very sensible price for two figures in a nice vignette. As I had never seen the film, it prompted me to get a box-set of several of these horror classics and I've now learnt so much more about this genre, it has encouraged me to want to see more of the same. I hope if you choose to build one of these superb kits and you will enjoy it as much as I did. Well done Moebius Models, I can’t wait for another one of these great pieces!
It's alive! Finishing the Monster's face really breathed life into the lifeless plastic
The iconic expression of horror on the Bride’s face is captured by Moebius’s model and a careful paint job seals the deal. A fun experience in painting
The nameplate supplied is crisply moulded and was primed in white car primer, then airbrushed with yellow and orange acrylics

The Editor’s Page... TMMI take a trip to the far east – Suffolk!
The crew gather for a photo in front of the newly acquired Panther Ausf.A The main man; Bruce Crompton along side his mighty Panther ausf.A
WW2 era Coke bottles and crate!
A WELL KEPT SECRET
B
ack in January of this year I had the opportunity to visit none other than Mr Bruce Crompton of ‘Combat Dealers’ TV show fame, out in the wilds of East Anglia, UK. Bruce has a fantastic hobby; he collects and restores military vehicles, some for his personal ‘museum’ and others for museums as far away as Cairns, Australia. He has just acquired something rather impressive in the form of a Panther ausf.A, of which restoration has already begun. The tracked and wheeled vehicles are fantastic of course, but what impressed me equally was Bruce’s astonishing collection of smaller items of military gear, from the jacuzi-sized shell case of a Dora railway gun (a deactivated projectile will soon join it) right down to an original wooden launch frame from a ‘Stuka zu Fuss’ rocket, the gunsight from a Tiger I and original WW2 era Coca Cola bottles which Bruce has filled with fresh coke and capped with original lids! It was a wonderful couple of hours and we’ll be returning to this private collection in the summer to take another look around and to shoot more photos. Expect to see some of the images from our first visit appearing in Tamiya Model Magazine and Military Illustrated Modeller soon. A big thanks to Bruce, Max and the Axis Tracks crew who made us feel so welcome. Search Facebook for ‘Axistrack’
