TOY FAIR PHOTO-REPORT NUREMBERG 2018
NUREMBERG TOY FAIR 201 A
few years back, I attempted to work out how many times I've attended the Nuremberg Toy Fair since I’ve been working on TMMI - I think it must now have be around twenty-three times, but to be honest I’ve
lost count! Over the years I have been lucky to have had the chance to see at first hand the new models and products for the coming year and while the internet has gradually overtaken the our ability to bring you the news first, I still like to include
a detailed report each year, to show you the things that caught my eye in the huge halls that house the hundreds of manufacturer booths… So here we are again, with this year’s crop! Apologies to anyone I’ve left out, but we have limited
space, as always... For 2018, Tamiya showed off the new 1:20 Ferrari SF70H F1 car which is the highlight of the model motorsport year so far, plus the new 1:35 M3 Stuart 'Late Production', the 1:72 Ki-61 Hien and, of course,

FULL-BUILD: AFV FIGURE SET TAMIYA 1:35 WEHRMACHT TANKERS ● KIT NO.35354
T
THE MEN IN BLACK PART 8 Erik Dreister assembles and paints Tamiya's new eight-man 1:35 Wehrmacht tank set and gives us a glimpse of his technique of painting 1:35 figures
he latest tank crew set produced by Tamiya marks a new standard of quality for injectionmoulded figurines. In the box, Tamiya provides no less than eight German tankers of the Second World War and the new moulding techniques mastered by the company provide an extraordinary level of detail on the uniforms and personal kit. But it is in the faces that the evolution is most apparent; the facial features of these new-generation figures are much more refined and expressive than in the past. This new set allows the modeller to attain – for the price of a single resin figurine – a full tank installation (four busts) to install in the vehicle's hatches, plus two, full-length soldiers, the ideal to accompaniment to a stationary tank, giving life and a sense of scale to our miniature Panzers. The uniforms depicted in the set are common to Panzertruppen between 1940 and 1945, so the choice of models they'll go with is very large. At the request of the Editor, I focused this article on the techniques of painting figurines rather than the Tiger I kit. This is a phase often neglected by modellers because it requires a good mastery of painting plus lots of patience. I admit I'm not an excellent figure artist, far from it, but I hope that the few tips that I will offer you over the next pages will make you want to get started. Not being very talented with a brush, I have painted my figurines mainly with an airbrush for years. This makes the work faster and the transitions between highlights and shadows are, to my taste, more natural and less contrasty than current fashions dictate.
CONCLUSION
I am delighted to see that Tamiya continues its momentum in 1:35 and regularly renews its figures. After the World War two American crew-set, this new release will create a lot of ideas for beautiful dioramas that will be full of life. ●

The first thing to do before assembling the figures is to locate and then remove the inevitable moulding lines on the parts. Fortunately with Tamiya, this work is limited to a few minutes using a model knife. To ease handling, much of this can be done with the parts still on the sprues
The figures are quickly assembled. The instructions are very clear and precise and a colour information sheet explains uniform, medals and other decoration details. The fit is perfect; here we see a collar of one of the uniforms, moulded separately
The stems must be thin enough to access the lower parts of the figures. Spare pieces of sprue are ideal
Grouped here, we see the full and half-figures after assembly. To facilitate painting, they have been fixed onto sticks made from the sprues of the set. Torsos and legs of the two kneeling characters remained separated
Some parts may be left attached to their moulding frame

Leaving the small accessories attached to their sprue makes them easier to handle during painting. However, the gun cases were trimmed off with a new blade because the moulding point would have been difficult to retouch later
The heads were left on their sprues for painting. The finesse of the latest Tamiya figurines is similar to that of cast resin figures
The cases were then glued on the hidden reverse side to a sprue to handle them more easily
To make painting easier, the figures were coated with Tamiya’s Fine Surface primer
The hats are in two parts to allow better detail to be moulded. Again, the author detached each piece, then fixed them on their the sprue with Blu-Tack
The uniforms of the German tank crews being entirely black, each character was covered with a mixture of XF-1 Flat Black and XF-15 Flat Flesh. At this stage, the mixture is 90% XF-1 to 10% XF-15
To give more 'volume' to the figures, the author applied a lightened mixture of the 'black' (with up to 30% XF-15) vertically, from the neck down. This subtly highlights the upper parts of the uniform and its many folds
A fine Tamiya brush (Pro Series) was used to paint the small details such as the belt, the pink collar border and the shirt collar. At this point, the outlines of the details of the uniform were emphasised with medium grey
For the figures on foot, the author used Tamiya pastels to dirty-up the boots and trousers, especially at the knees. This adds a touch of extra realism
To reinforce the shadows, the author applied pure XF-1 Flat Black (thinned), again vertically, but this time from below
p 20-24 TigerI 270MN 22
02/03/2018 16:02
The painting was done with the airbrush in the same way as for the uniforms, beginning by applying the base layer XF-15 Flat Flesh over the whole head (1) and then spraying from above the XF-15 with added XF-2 Flat White to achieve highlights (2) on the top of the face and the reliefs such as the bridge of the nose, the cheekbones, etc. In contrast, XF-15 supplemented with a drop of XF-64 Brown was sprayed from below to darken the lower parts and the lower reliefs (3); under the chin, under the nose and under the eyebrows
The heads were airbrushed with a base of Tamiya XF-15 Flat Flesh
One of the most difficult phases is to paint the eyes. It is necessary above all that the moulded detail of these areas be perfectly defined. This is a very significant aspect of the latest Tamiya figures. Several techniques exist; here, a line of pure white was applied between the eyelids
Then a line of brown is applied above the white line, which will define the upper eyelid while giving intensity to the look
Finally, a circle of colour creates the iris, here in blue
At the end of the process, the lower lip is touched in with pale pink. To achieve all these steps, the author used exclusively the ultra-thin brushes of Tamiya's Pro Series range
The separate cap elements greatly facilitate the painting work and thus increases the level of detail. The different parts were assembled after their painting

A miniature map is printed in the instructions, but it is only black and white while the one on the side of the box is in colour. If cut out carefully and thinned down from the back by light sanding, it looks better than the monotone item
The set of figures after painting. Tamiya provides three optional heads with police caps for the C, G and H figures. There are also radio headphones and several pairs of binoculars that can be used if desired
The F figurine was installed by the author instead of the driver. It was glued in place before closing up the Tiger's hull because it would be impossible to install it later. The interior is painted black

This is an exquisitely produced resin replacement for the kit-supplied propeller in Tamiya’s 1:32 Corsair models. What’s wrong with the kit prop we hear you say? Nothing at all, but this one does allow the blades to be arranged at the angle-of-attack of your choice. And it comes with a nifty assembly jig too.

he new Kinetic 1:48 Harrier T2 trainer released in 2017 is a most welcome addition for fans of the Harrier as this will be the first time this two-seater Harrier aircraft is available in this scale. This kit also promises improved moulding quality from Kinetic as it is made from their newly acquired injection-moulding machine. From my initial inspection, it appears to be very promising as the parts are flash free, crisp in detail and
the panel lines are deep enough for a panel wash after a coat of paint. The fuselage, wing and stabilizer fins are made from a new mould and their fit is excellent. For a small aircraft, this kit comes with over 300+ parts; however, some are duplicates from previous releases of Kinetic Harrier kits. For instance, the kit offers different version of wings, jet intake, etc. One must be very careful when assembling this kit referring to the instruction sheet to ensure the correct
parts are used. As this is a trainer aircraft, a minimal amount of external stores are provided on two parts sprues and the sidewinder missiles are not as detailed as the ones found in their recent F-18 kits. The rocket pods appear to represent the Matra 155 eighteen-shot and thirty-six-shot SNEB rocket pods. I would love to have used them but they look rather strange with the rockets sticking out of the noses of the pods, which is unrepresentative of the real thing.

V
The kit decals – printed by Cartograf – are excellent as always, providing markings for ten aircraft: T.2 in British, Spanish, Thai and US service; I elected to do the Spanish Navy’s TAV-8S Matador. The decals provided markings for aircraft 808 and I found photos of this particular aircraft sporting shark's mouth nose-art during the RIAT '94 (Royal International Air Tattoo) air-show at RAF Fairford in England during July 1994. This kit provides all the markings for this plane except for the shark mouth; hence, on this build, I made the nose art decals for it. Note that the decal for this shark mouth aircraft is available from a Spanish decal maker, however, it cost too much for me to order.
THE BUILD
The kit cockpit looks sufficiently detailed out of the box. The only issues I have with the cockpit are the raised details of the side consoles and instrument panels, which are too shallow and challenging to paint. I was impressed with the kit seats, as they appeared accurate and very detailed. In most of the Harrier T.2 aircraft, the two ejection seats are different; the rear seat is a type 9D2 Mk2 while the front seat is a 9D1 Mk2 with tall canopy cutter. The only drawback of the kit seats is the size of the seat headrest appears to be a bit large. Photo-etched seat belts are provided, but I preferred to detail the seat with my own home-made parts. Using a lighter, I heated a piece of kit sprue and stretched a fine diameter rod to make the protective cage on the right side of each of the seats (take care when doing this). Using more stretched sprue, I bent some pieces to make the seat-top ejection pull handles. I used Milliput putty to make the seat back cushion and seat belts. The seatbelt buckles were cut from thin styrene card stock. The cockpit was painted in a medium grey colour. I picked Mr Hobby H350 as the colour of choice due to how well it matches with photos of similar Harrier T2 cockpit. The sidewalls are well represented and

The wheel wells were painted gloss white and were weathered accordingly before they were assembled
The author chose to assemble the engine intake assembly as a whole and then coerce it into one side of the fuselage. The fuselage halves had enough flex, so it was okay to gently push the intake into place behind the cockpit tub

As mentioned opposite, the author chose to fit the engine intake in one piece, rather than in parts. The fuselage was gently clamped once cement had been applied to ensure all gaps were closed up, taking great care not to distort the mouldings in the process
moulded with deep and clear detail. I patiently drybrushed the shallow details on the instrument panels and the side consoles with white paint to make them contrast well against the dark grey background. I had difficulty getting good results drybrushing the instrument panel as the details are too shallow. Fortunately, the shroud will hide the instrument panels so the dials and other details will not be visible in the completed cockpit. I applied instrument dial decals only to the lower portions of the instrument panel as these might be visible outside the shroud. The wheel wells, speed brakes wells, and the intake assembly are all moulded in individual panels which enables Kinetic to mould nice deep details of hydraulics and piping on these sidewalls. I painted these sidewalls with gloss white paint and weathered accordingly before assembling them. The instructions suggest cutting the intake shroud into halves and gluing each half to each fuselage walls. I opted to assemble the complete engine intake assembly as a whole and then force fit it into one side of the fuselage. The fuselage halves had enough flex, so it was perfectly fine to gently push the intake into place behind the cockpit tub. Please note that it is important to push the intake assembly as far forward as possible to ensure the shroud lip is flush with the intake joint on the fuselage. Before assembling the intakes, I painted the intake shrouds with gloss white
paint and the compressor blades face with Alclad aluminium paint. These parts are visible on the finished model so I took great care to paint and assemble them. I wanted to depict the auxiliary air inlet doors in the open position. On a Harrier, these doors always open due to gravity when the engine is shut off. I noticed that the glue joint for the intake shroud to the fuselage joint could be seen through the open doors, so after the fuselage halves were cemented together, I applied putty to the top part of the intake shroud joint and sanded that smooth to make it look seamless. I carefully re-sprayed the putty area with gloss white paint. After sanding and completing touch up painting, the seam was not visible when looking through the open doors. Assembly of the model is very straightforward and the fit is very good. I used clamps to press the front fuselage together to ensure the fuselage halves and the cockpit/intakes were in direct contact when the cement was drying. This model kit is very good and accurate as it is; however, I had to add the tail fin’s electroluminescent formation light bar by using a strip of thin styrene card stock. The joints at the air intakes to the fuselage have a noticeable gap, which needs to be addressed. Instead of using modelling putty to fill in the gaps inside the air intakes, I got the inspiration to use household white silicon caulking material instead. As I used this material to fill in gaps during my
house renovation projects, I thought it would do well in this particular modelling application. I applied a bit of the caulking to the joints with the tip of an applicator, such as a toothpick. Then I immediately blended the caulking with a Q-Tip wetted with tap water until it was smooth. It took a couple of swipes to blend the caulking smooth to the joint. The beauty of working with this caulking is that it has a twenty-minute drying time, which allowed me to manipulate it with a bit of water or completely remove it all if I was not satisfied
with the result. No sanding is required when this is done right! Also, the white colour of the caulking blended in perfectly with the white interior of the intakes, so I did not even have to repaint at the touch-up area. I also used this caulking material to seal the gap on the windshield on my painted model. Again, I judiciously applied the caulking to the joint and then blend smoothly the caulking with a wet fingertip and/or wet Q-tip. When dried, I simply masked off the area and paint the caulking with the local paint colour. How easy was that?

The author applied a colour-wash to the panel lines using a mixture of medium grey enamel paint to enhance the lines
MAKING V DECAL To make the decal for the
shark mouth, I first drew the image on the model. I applied matt clear tape to the nose of the fuselage to use as the drawing surface. I use lead pencil and freehand draw the image according to my reference photos. Since the image was symmetrical to the centre-line of the plane, I only needed to draw one side of the shark's mouth up to the fuselage joint. After I was satisfied that my drawing matched that of the real plane, I removed the tape and scanned the image into my computer as a JPEG for manipulation on a drawing software. In the software, I cleaned up the image pixel by pixel and then mirrored it about the centreline to create the complete shark mouth. I printed a copy of the marking on paper and then cut out it out to test fit it on the model. I used
30
my colour inkjet printer to print the marking on Testors white decal paper. I sprayed the printed decal with two light coats of Future floor wax to seal and waterproof the image. I then hand-painted the red shark's mouth directly onto the decal paper. You can visit my webpage to download the image file to print this decal.
PAINTING
Before I begin painting, I sprayed the model with a light coat of grey primer to check that all the seams were smooth and properly filled. For the Spanish Navy scheme, I painted the topside of the model with Mr Hobby H315 (FS16440) and Tamiya X-2 White for the undersides. This is the same paint scheme as the 1960's era US Navy paint scheme. For this light paint scheme, I opted to pre-shade the major panel lines with dark grey lines to create the illusion of depth
along them. The fin and the nosecone were painted with Gunze H2 Gloss Black. On top of the shaded lines, I slowly built up the topcoat paint colours. The Mr Hobby paint was diluted with 40% acrylic thinner to keep the paint thin enough so the dark shading lines would lightly show up under the paint. The tip of the rear ballast tail cone was painted with Model Master Fluorescent Red (FS28915) for the high visibility paint. I sprayed the model with two coats of Future floor wax to achieve a glossy and smooth surface for the decals to go on. After decalling, I colour-washed the panel lines with a mix of medium grey enamel paint to highlight the lines and slightly dirty up the underside of the aircraft. Kinetic did a fine job of making the recessed panel lines depth on this model just right; the grooves are
deep enough to take on a 'wash very easily and it stays inside the grooves during the removal stage. I typically let the enamel colour-wash dry for ten minutes before I remove the excess with a paper towel, lightly wetted with enamel thinner. I swiped the towel along the direction of airflow on the plane to remove the excess 'wash. Finally, the model was sprayed with a light coat of Mig Matt Varnish followed by a light coat of Future floor wax to achieve a semi-gloss finish. I used a little bit of transparent white glue to tack the canopies to the model. The canopies fitted perfectly to the model in the closed position. Following a reference photo of this aircraft, I chose to display the model with the smaller 100 gallon wing tanks and loaded the outboard hard-mount with an empty missile rail.

Colour-wash was also used to slightly dirty-down the underside of the aircraft
The massive twin canopy of the T.2 really changes the look of the Harrier; it’s super-clear in Kinetic’s kit
CONCLUSION
I really enjoyed building this model kit from Kinetic. The fit of the parts was worry-free and only a slight clean-up of the joints with a sanding stick was needed. The shape looks accurate when compared to photos of the real twin seater. Even without enhancing the cockpit and the seats, I think any modeller can
produce a fine replica of this interesting Harrier variant. The only critiques I have of this kit are the instructions could be made easier to understand, the decal instruction should be printed larger and the text could be more legible as I found them blurry. I fully recommend this kit to any modellers looking to build a two-seater Harrier Trainer aircraft. ●

BRING ME A CHURC AND MA TAMIYA 1:48 BRITISH TANK CHURCHILL MK.VII CROCODILE â—? KIT NO.32594
The Editor builds a pre-production sample of Tamiya's all-new 1:48 Churchill Mk.VII flame-thrower tank
T
he Churchill Crocodile was a British flame-throwing tank of the late Second World War. It was a variant of the 'Tank, Infantry, Mk VI (A22) Churchill Mark VII' although the Churchill Mark IV was initially chosen to be the base vehicle. The Crocodile was introduced as one of the specialised armoured vehicles developed under Major-General Percy Hobart, informally known as 'Hobart's Funnies'. It was produced from October 1943, in time for the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6th 1944. From early in the war, there had been experiments with mounting
34
flamethrowers on British vehicles, leading to vehicles such as the Cockatrice, Basilisk and the Wasp (the latter being a flamethrower on a Universal Carrier). The Churchill Oke, a flamethrower carrying Churchill Mark II developed by a Royal Tank Regiment officer, was tested operationally on the Dieppe Raid. Parallel development work was carried out by the Petroleum Warfare Department, AEC and the Ministry of Supply (MoS) on Valentine tanks. The Department of Tank Design preferred the Churchill, which was the Infantry tank successor to the Valentine, as a basis for further work.

General Percy Hobart saw the Crocodile demonstrated in 1943 and pressured the MoS to produce a development plan and the Chief of the General Staff added the flamethrowers to the 79th Division plan. The flamethrower equipment was produced as a kit that REME workshops could fit in the field, converting any available Churchill Mk.VII. The conversion kit consisted of the trailer, an armoured pipe fitted along the underside of the tank and the projector, which replaced the hull-mounted Besa machine gun. The Crocodile was therefore still able to function as a gun tank with its turret mounted Ordnance QF 75mm gun. Of the 800 kits produced, 250 were held in reserve for possible operations against the Japanese. The remainder was sufficient for producing three regiments of tanks as well as training and replacements for battlefield casualties.
EIGHTEEN LITRES PER SECOND OF LIQUID HELL
The Crocodile's six and a half ton armoured trailer carried 400 imperial gallons (1,800 litres) of fuel as well as compressed nitrogen propellant. This was enough for eighty, one-second bursts. The trailer, connected to the tank by a three way armoured coupling, could be jettisoned from within the tank if necessary. The thrower had a range of up to 120 yards (110 metres), although some sources quote 150 yards (140 metres). Refuelling took at least ninety minutes and pressurisation around fifteen minutes; the pressure required had to be primed on the trailer by the crew as close to use as feasible, because pressure could not be maintained for very long. The fuel was projected at a rate of four imperial gallons (eighteen litres) per second. The fuel burned on water and could be used to set fire to woods and houses. The flamethrower could project a 'wet' burst of unlit fuel, which would splash around corners in trenches or strongpoints and then ignite this with a second burst. Used by units of the 79th Armoured Division in concert with the Churchill AVRE, and other Funnies, the Crocodile was an effective assault weapon whose threat could induce enemy troops to retreat or surrender. The Crocodile was a specialised weapon limited by the short range of its flamethrower. On the other hand, it was used so successfully against bunkers that many surrendered after the first ranging shots. Aspects of the mechanism were considered by the British to be so secret that disabled units, if they could not be recovered, were rapidly destroyed by any means, even air strike, if necessary. The flame projector was a powerful psychological weapon, so feared by the Germans that captured Crocodile crews were often summarily executed.

1 To make the kit as buildable as possible, Tamiya designed the running gear to be easy to assemble without sacrificing visible detail 2 The whole run of outer roadwheels are moulded in one piece, with the attachment point being the swing arm 3 This part simply cements to the front of the wheel bogies, leaving the springs just visible 4 Liquid cement can be applied from behind once the outer wheel strip has been laid in position
The tracks come in the form of links and lengths and are best fitted to the running gear prior to painting
Only the front, rear and lower runs are provided; the upper run is completely hidden and is thus unnecessary

The fitted tracks can be cemented to the roadwheels on the inner faces, preventing tell-tale glue contact points on the visible areas
The upper hull snaps down nicely onto the assembled lower hull; we can see why the upper the upper track run was not needed The instructions say to cement the side panels to the fixed upper hull, but they can be glued in place with the upper hull still uncemented, allowing the whole assembly to be lifted off, which helps when painting the tracks
The turret builds up from two side mouldings plus a face panel/gun mount
The first mating of the trailer to the tank. It remains hinged in all directions thanks to the universal joint coupling
The gun barrel can elevate thanks to the inclusion of two polycaps for trunnions
Slight gaps form where the turret parts meet so once the cement has hardened, one-part putty was used to conceal them
The access hatch handles of the trailer were upgraded with replacement copper wire items (in red)
For this review, we had the luxury of some extra sprues, so spare track links were mounted to the hull front. Please note, these are not provided in the kit as standard.
The air-box lifting lugs, missing from the kit, were made from plastic card and cemented in place

IN DEPLOYMENT V CROCODILE British Crocodiles supported
the US Army in the Normandy bocage, at the Battle for Brest and during Operation Clipper, the Anglo-American assault on Geilenkirchen. C Squadron also supported the 53rd Welch Division assault on s'Hertogenbosch in October 1944. The units that used the Crocodile in North west Europe, generally as part of 31st Armoured Brigade, were: •1st Fife and Forfar Yeomanry 141st Regiment Royal Armoured Corps (The Buffs, Royal East Kent Regiment) - 13th Troop, C Squadron saw action on the first day of the Normandy invasion. •7th Royal Tank Regiment In Italy, the 25th Armoured Assault Brigade operated Crocodiles. From late 1950 until their withdrawal in 1951, Churchill Crocodiles served in Korea as part C Squadron, 7th Royal Tank Regiment in 29th Brigade.

Historical background edited from Wikipedia
A NEW KIT IN QUARTER-INCH SCALE Tamiya's all-new 1:48 model was announced at the 2018 Nuremberg Toy Fair. We secured a pre-production sample at the show, which explains the light grey plastic; the full-production kits will be moulded in the more usual olive green polystyrene. Tamiya first released a 1:35 kit of this vehicle and its trailer back in 1977 and it has been re-issued several times since. It became a classic model in Tamiya's catalogue and you won't find many armour modellers of a certain age who haven't built one, or more. It was thus quite a (pleasant) surprise when Tamiya announced the release of this flame-throwing combo in 1:48 and by the time we were having our first coffee on the Tamiya stand at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, we had the model in our hands. It's a delightful little thing with some intelligent design solutions to make it quick and easy to build without compromising on detail. As with its 1:35 cousin, the trailer is still towed on an articulated coupling, but the running gear has been rationalised as we can see in the accompanying photos. The tools are mostly moulded individually and gone is the die-cast metal lower hull found in Tamiya's earlier 1:48 vehicle kits. Follow along with this photo-article to see how this little flame-throwing devil builds up! ●

To provide a change of texture, a large tarpaulin was made from rolled-out epoxy putty and draped over the top of the trailer, following photo references
Random boxes and chunks of resin casting blocks were Blu-Tacked to the top of the trailer, the soft putty laid in place and allowed to cure overnight. Once hardened, the boxes and blocks were removed, so there’s actually nothing at under the tarp on the finished model!
Overall view of the finished tank. The massive front mud guards were left off, using photo-reference to confirm this did happen on the Mk.VII The rear of the Churchill Crocodile is a busy place. The trailer coupling can be seen here, plus the heavy, armoured pipe that fed nitrogenpressured napalm forwards, under the tank's hull and up into the front of the vehicle to the flame projector mounted in the glacis plate

The first colour to go on was Mr Color (lacquer) 'Mahogany' which provided a base colour for the tracks and olive drab shades to follow
The Mr Color is a lacquer-based (cellulose) paint as gives off extremely powerful fumes, but it sprays very well and clings to the kit plastic
Next up was the dark olive drab layer and Mr Color Olive Drab (2) was used here. Note how it was airbrushed on the lower portions of the model, leaving only thin coats in upper areas
To fill in the thinly coated zones, Mr Color’s lighter Olive Drab FS34087 was sprayed, mainly on higher and horizontal surfaces
Finally, to create highlights, some Mr Color No.39 Dark Yellow/Sandy Yellow was added to the previous olive drab and airbrushed in patches over the highest points of the model; turret top, turret bin and front fenders. All Mr Color paints were thinned with Mr Color Thinner 400

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk Designed specifically for Tamiya's recent 1:35 Valentine tank, Eduard's 'BIG ED' set comprises three packs of photo-etched brass upgrades, presented in the familiar cardboard envelope. Buying the sets this way saves money too. Here, we have a sheet of 'general' detail parts for the model, providing the track guards and associated brackets, engine screen and standard mudguards front and rear. The second pack provides the side-shields fitted to tanks operating in the desert to reduce dust. Again, the appropriate brackets are included. Finally, a smaller set offers the rack often seen on the tanks' rear decks, used to carry the British 'Flimsy' fuel cannisters. A very useful production for sharpening up the detail of this kit. 1:35 VALENTINE MK.II/IV BIG ED (BIG3588)

'Tommy and lazy donkey' is an instant vignette (the base and scenery are not included though) and could fill the corner of a desert or Mediterranean dioramic scene. 'Pin-Up Pilot' features a comely young lady in (sort of) military uniform, sitting on a section of P-47 cowling. Not exactly PC, but quite well done all the same. Finally we have 'Pushchair and Tricycle' and 'Assorted Shoes', both very useful accessories for street-scene dioramas. 'ELF AND SAFETY
The Renault 5 Alpine stood out at the 1978 Monte Carlo Rally. Eric Evain uses Renaissance accessories to enhance the recently re-issued 1:24 Italeri kit

n 1978, Renault Sport lined up two Renault R5 Alpine Group 2 cars at the Monte Carlo Rally. In difficult weather conditions, the team relied on the agility and wide track of its small sports-car to overcome the Porsche 911s that also took part. The cars driven by Jean Ragnotti and Guy FrĂŠquelin finished respectively in the second and third places just two and three minutes behind the overall winner, Jean Pierre Nicolas on Porsche 911. Not bad for a little R5! Italeri has re-issued the Esci model, which was first marketed in 1979, a good idea because it seems that this R5 was long awaited by collectors. The content of the box is basically simple, since it is the original kit with a new decal sheet with the markings for the Monte Carlo Rally 1978. The model is also distinguished by its open engine compartment with separate cover, which shows off the detail. Body moulding quality is good for its vintage but the rest of the parts haven't aged as well. The biggest compromise of the kit are
the headlights, which are not moulded individually, but simply reproduced flat. Esci originally produced its R5 in two versions: civilian and competition and to achieve the latter, a separate sprue is provided for exterior bodykit, including widened wings. But the interior of the Renault 5 Rally is very different. Fortunately, Renaissance, an aftermarket producer from northern France produced some accessories for the model. Renaissance was kind enough to provide us with their detail set (Tk24/417) which includes bucket seats, fuel tank, dashboard, helmet holder, additional headlights plus an additional photo-etched sheet (Tk24/416) which provides the brackets for the spare wheel, the grille, the windscreen wipers, bonnet fasteners and their decal sheet (Tk24/423) which is a little more extensive than the set provided in the box. In addition, new wheels are also available, 'Fergat' (24Ferg) and 'Gotti' (24GottiR17) in thirteen-inch size.
U
The kit derives from that of an R5 series. To make a true racing version, these Renaissance accessories will be very useful

V ASSEMBLY As it has been said above,
the body is that of a road-going R5 Alpine to which are added wing extensions. I thought that the latter would fit on the body without cutting, but we must make room for the wider wheels... To cut, it would have been helpful if Italeri had printed scale templates in the instructions, but there is nothing. In order to make a cutting guide, I followed the moulding lines inside the bodywork that I highlighted with a black marker. The wings were first cut roughly and then trimmed up to the cutting line. I proceeded gradually, checking regularly with the wing extensions.
The wing extensions were glued before painting the bodywork. The attachment is more robust but the painting of the bodywork will require masking
Cutting the bodywork to install the wing extensions. The contour of the standard wing flanges, marked with a feltpen, serves as a cutting guide
The cutting was done gradually by performing successive tests with the wings
The edges of the bonnet must be thinned so that it is flush with the bodywork
The three-tone decoration is really '70s. The yellow-orange is a mix of Tamiya TS-16 Yellow and a few drops of TS-12 Orange
Renaissance decals were used. The race number was placed over the white decal to ensure opacity
BODY PAINTING
Initially, I planned to use pure TS-8 Red and TS-16 Tamiya Yellow, but the pictures gleaned from the 'net show that the yellow was a little bit orange. There is a photo with a 1982 R5 Turbo in 'classic' Renault yellow next to the 1978 R5 Alpine in which the difference is quite obvious. So, I mixed the TS-16 with a few drops of TS-12 Orange. The interior of the doors (pieces 32 and 33) are also painted yellow and the inside of the boot. Restored R5 photos show a completely black interior but the few pictures of the Monte Carlo '78 car indicate that the inside was yellow.

RALLY INTERIOR
In the kit, the interior of the production car is retained, but the reality is different and the Renaissance accessories remedy it. For starters, the spare wheel is mounted in a metal cradle reproduced in the photo-etched sheet. The part was shaped around a handle of the X-Acto knife and then wrapped around one of the tyres of the kit. The cradle was glued to the floor still wrapped around the tyre to keep it in good shape and the chassis then painted satin black. The Renaissance dashboard receives PE parts for the various dials and once painted black, the contours of the dials were scraped with the tip of a cutter in order to represent the bezels. A drop of gloss varnish was then placed in the centre of the dials. The Italeri seats were, of course, replaced by the Renaissance bucket seats.
U
The dashboard is completely replaced by the Renaissance resin with photo-cutting for the dials
The original seats were replaced by resin seats. The harness straps come from a surplus Belkits kit
The cradle housing the spare wheel and fuel tank are also from Renaissance. The cradle was glued while coiled around the spare wheel to keep its shape
The contours of the door interiors were painted with the same mixture as the bodywork. The rest of the chassis is satin black
The harness straps were attached directly to the chassis, which should not be the case in the real car. The wheels are 'Fergats' from Renaissance
Note the position of the battery in the engine compartment

Additional headlights are by Renaissance in resin. Their supports were scratchbuilt from plastic card. The fog lamps are also replaced by resin parts
The headlights are the weak point of the kit. They were redone with transparent plastic card
The resin headlights were painted with a chrome Molotov pen and the rendering is really superb. The lower optics received a layer of Tamiya translucent yellow
The hood fasteners and the wiper also come from the Renaissance sets
V
The re-issue of this kit was long awaited for by rally fans. It does show its age and is not up to the quality current productions, but if you have some modelling experience plus the Renaissance accessories you can create a neat-looking real racing version of the iconic Renault 5. â—?

fter recently completing Revell’s 1:600 scale model of the USS Enterprise I was very pleased to have the opportunity to build their model of the Klingon Battle Cruiser to the same scale. Fortune favours the brave so I started by examining the parts and quickly realised that, like the Enterprise kit, it is not directly based on the model as it appeared in the original series as it features some engraved panel lines to its upper surface which were not featured on the filming model. Without re-watching the Deep Space Nine episode 'Trials and Tribbulations' I am guessing that the kit was based on the new model built for that episode but I may be wrong. What is strange and slightly disappointing is that this panel lining does not extend to the lower surface which is completely smooth. In my humble opinion it would have been better to have either both surfaces engraved or both plain,
52
but then if I was that fussed about it I could have spent hours filling and sanding the lines, but I am not that fussed about it, so on with the build. There are a number of clear parts representing windows so I decided to try and build the model in sub-assemblies to allow for these parts to installed post painting and minimise the need for masking. Whereas the Enterprise kit had been designed so that parts met on panel lines to reduce the need for filling and sanding, the Klingon Cruiser would need more work on it so I was grateful that the majority of the windows are located in the forward hull. There are some clear inserts for the warp engines that the instructions say should be painted clear green, but looking at the photos of the original filming model in my Japanese Star Trek Mechanics book the warp engines do not have this feature so I decided to install these parts now and paint over them.

There are a number of clear parts representing windows so the author decided to build the model in sub-assemblies to allow for the parts to installed after painting and reduce the need for masking; the majority of the windows are located in the forward hull
V
Parts fit to the upper section of the forward hull was disappointing and the front panel did not want to sit happily into the upper and lower sections. Under most circumstances this would not be a problem as the gap could be filled and sanded away, but the panel was riddled with windows so filling and sanding became problematical. As Revell had taken some licenses with their interpretation of the model I thought I would go one step further and add a strip of plastic along the top edge of the panel to hide the gap. Now, some folk might not like my solution but it gets over a problem and as I would say with any model I build it is my creative interpretation of the subject. The sub-assemblies were then grey primered and the clear parts painted as per the instructions.
TIME FOR PAINT
As with the Enterprise I decided to apply some pre-shading by airbrushing black paint over the panel lines and in an arbitrary way to break up the final surface finish. The instructions describe a two colour finish and I decided to keep to this approach but use my own choice of colours. I started off by airbrushing the lighter of the two colours, Vallejo Pale Grey Blue to the areas noted on the instructions and then, where necessary masked those areas off with Tamiya masking tape before applying the main colour, Vallejo French Mirage Blue. When completed I realised that the dark shade of the French Mirage Blue had obscured the subtle pre-shading effect: it was still there, but only faintly noticeable. Rather than
With the major sub-assemblies complete, it is now time for paint!

re-painting I decided that I would add some post shading using pigment powders. I mixed up a bespoke colour using Mig pigments Black and Panzer Fading Grey along with some blue pastel powder. I applied this using a chiselled edge brush into recesses and joins and sealed it with a

coat of varnish. After looking at the rear hull I realised that there was a couple of areas where I had over applied the pigments and faded this down by using a drybrush technique but in a scrubbing like motion to avoid any directionality to the paint application. The parts were then given
a coat of gloss varnish prior to application of the decals. I must admit that I left quite a few of the decals on the sheet as reference to the original model didn’t show as many markings as the decal sheet suggested, but, as with everything, what you do with them is a matter of personal choice. The decals
were then sealed with a further coat of gloss varnish and matt varnish was then applied to give the model the desired appearance.
MARKINGS
Three of the decals I did not apply were for the base. I felt that the bright yellow, red, green and blue

a bit garish on such a large scale, so I painted the base black and sponge applied some Games Workshop Tin Bitz to give it a beaten metal appearance. It was now time to apply the clear parts. Normally I would glue clear canopies in place with a clear drying PVA glue, but because these windows would be sealed within the model I wanted to get a very secure fixing so I used Humbrol Clear-Fix which is awful stuff to use as it has a consistency not unlike snot which is difficult to accurately apply. It was now time for final assembly and most parts went together nicely except for the front panel of the forward hull to the lower panel which left a gap, but not as noticeable as the one to the upper panel. For fear
of ruining the finish of the model I decided to live with the gap, but couldn’t say I was particularly happy with it on such a prominent part of the model. Revell should be applauded for creating new moulds of these iconic subjects and I look forward to them releasing more Star Trek subjects, I just hope that they decide to keep the models at a consistent scale and not vary them from model to model as they have done with their Star Wars kits. I would like to finish by dedicating this article to fellow modeller and good friend, Steve Davies: boldly going far too soon. ● Availability; Revell models are widely available from good model shops and online. www.revell.de/en

KIT PREVIEW RYE FIELD MODEL 1:35 SD.KFZ.171 PANTHER AUSF.G EARLY/LATE FULL INTERIOR ● KIT NO.RM5016
With 2018 looking like the ‘year of the Panther’, let’s take a look at one of the key kit releases from Rye Field Model...
PANTHER’S TRACKS
S
everal, all-new 1:35 kits of the Panther tank are on release and coming soon this year, from Takom, Trumpeter, Meng (already out) and here, Rye Field Model. Quite what has caused this surge in miniatures of this famously potent World War Two German vehicle are unclear, but one thing is certain, they are all quite different to each other and there are no shared parts: this truly is a Panther contest! The Ausführung ‘G’ was manufactured in greater numbers than Panthers Ausf A and D and arguably represented the most refined version of the tank. In RFM’s kit, the modeller can choose either the ‘Frühe’ (early) or Späte (Late) production versions from the box; the differences are fairly small and are limited to external details but make sure you make your choice before beginning the model and look for the modification call-outs in the hefty instruction booklet. As you might imagine, the inclusion of driving and fighting compartments, a full engine, its bay, gearbox and cooling systems plus a complete turret interior with 75mm gun breech greatly increases the sprue-count and in this release we have no less than thirteen parts-frames of injection-moulded tan
and clear polystyrene. Add to that tally a bag of Model Kasten-style, articulated individual track links, two frets of photo-etched brass, a coil of braided copper towing cable, metal wire and a spring for the gun breech and we have an extremely engaging and complex production. A good portion of the fifty-two page instruction booklet is devoted to the assembly of the internal structures, although unusually, work begins with the turret and this alone runs from page five to seventeen. In this initial ‘special edition’ of the kit, the turret shell and upper hull are moulded in transparent plastic from specially polished moulds and while ejector-pin marks are still present, it is remarkably clear. It’s not to everyone’s taste of course but it does at least allow much of the internal areas to be observed after construction. If you want a conventional appearance, simply paint over it. All traces of external armour-plate texturing are absent of course, but German armour plate was pretty smooth anyway so it’s not really an issue. The lower hull features a detailed depiction of the lateral torsion-bar suspension system and uses photo-etched brass for the transverse floor supports. The suspension’s
swing-arms can be fitted so they will ‘operate’ but under the weight of the interior parts, it might be advisable to cement the arms in place to prevent sagging; the only time this will become apparent is when the last component is added to the model and thus, too late! One thing is for sure with this model. It is a long-build with no shortcuts to a quick result. Much of the interior will need painting part by part and plentiful dry-fitting will be needed to ensure everything goes together smoothly once painted and weathered. It’s a bold production from Rye Field Model and it will be very interesting indeed to see how it shapes up against the competition. ● AVAILABILITY; Rye Field Models models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online

Thinny Sticks Our range of Thinny Stick Sanders have been developed specifically to help modellers get to those hard to sand areas on all genres of models. They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series NEW How to Build... TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A and F4U-1D CORSAIR When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic model kits. Each model since then has seen incremental improvements. Just when you think the series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves you wrong. Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every respect. Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included several new sprues and offered a wider range of camouflage and marking possibilities. Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit includes a significant number of brand new sprues to depict the unique attributes of this variant. We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown and accuracy. In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty of inspiration with two different configurations and colour schemes. We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s 1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk around of a Corsair under restoration.

The Editor’s Page... The M3 Stuart Light Tank gets refreshed
I
have to admit, when I read the news that Tamiya were to release a new-tool kit of the M3 Stuart ‘Late Production’ in 1:35 just a few weeks before it was officially unveiled at this year’s Nuremberg Toy Fair, I was quite surprised. Pleasantly of course. I have built the 1974 kit numerous times and always thought it was a great little model, aside from the tracks with the misplaced end-connectors. However, looking into it, there were some issues with this old girl and a new production was a really good decision as it goes perfectly with Takom’s (and soon, MiniArt’s) new line of M3 Lee/Grant Medium Tanks in terms of the period of WW2 in which they operated. Several Allied nations used the Stuart too, offering some attractive markings options, including the Australians. We will, naturally, bring you a full-build review of the kit in TMMI! ●

Editor's Choice
ZERO PAINTS PINK PRIMER (ZP-3024), FERRARI SF70H RED (ZP-1007) www.hiroboy.com One look at my choice this month and you’ll know what I am building! Tamiya’s new 1:20 SF70H is a superb model and it deserves the very best paint you can buy, which in my opinion is Zero Paints’ own mix for this specific car. If you prefer to use aerosol cans, Tamiya’s TS-49 Bright Red is an excellent option, but if you like the control of airbrushing your colour coats, Zero is the way to go. And over a pink primer, naturally.
