ITALERI 1/24 FORD ESCORT RS1800 MKII LOMBARD RAC RALLY 1981
Built to Win Despite the introduction of the new MKIII Ford Escort in 1980, this MkII Escort RS 1800 was actually built by David Sutton Motorsport for Ari Vatenen and partner Dave Richards to drive in the 1981 Lombard RAC Rally. The car finished the event 2nd and with wins in the Acropolis Rally, Rally of Brazil and the 1000 Lakes Rally, it was enough for Vatenen to secure the 1981 Drivers’ World Rally Championship. The rear-wheel drive Ford Escort was one of the most successful rally cars ever. MKI Escorts with Lotus twin-cam engines started winning World Championship events in 1968 and, despite the arrival of four-wheel drive cars, its successor was still competitive in 1981. With registration number VLE 756X, the car has been on display in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu ever since. A famous and possibly the most famous incarnation of this car.
• Highly detailed plastic pieces moulded in black, white and clear • Detailed interior • ‘Daylighter’ front mounted rally lamps • Authentic Treaded Rally Tyres • Waterslide decals for Lombard RAC Rally version & authentic 1981 livery • Illustrated instructions • Scale: 1/24 • Length: 6.49” (165mm) • Skill level: 2 • Parts: 92

STOWAGE AND PAINTING
Hauler PE items added to the model since Part 1 Tamiya’s 1:48 Jerry Can Set provides some essential stowage items, as well as US pattern fuel cans. (last issue) include the periscope guard, direct sight A piece of pewter foil was glued to the engine deck, then the bedrolls CA glued to it. Lengths of Aizu and barrel brace for the M2 .50cal gun Micron Tape were used to represent the webbing that ties all this clutter to the tank. The stowage parts were firmly glued to the model so the second pewter foil ‘tarpaulin’ could be pressed into place
The first layer of paint to be applied was an undercoat of Vallejo's tough and opaque Surface Primer in olive drab. This would be almost completely hidden under subsequent layers of colour The little Sherman sits on the box of Jerry Cans. 1:48 is great for those with small display cabinets!
I
n the last issue, I assembled and up-detailed Tamiya's new 1:48 M4A3E8 'Easy Eight' Sherman, adding Hauler's photo-etched detail set (actually designed for the Hobbyboss kit) plus a few bits of my own. There were just a few extras to fit, such as the roof-top direct sight, periscope guard and barrel-brace for the M2 .50cal machine gun. I also used some tiny photo-etched screw heads to enhance the cupola and added further clips for the M2 MG on the turret-rear brackets. On the engine deck, I created a mound of crew stowage that included bedding rolls, tarpaulins and jerrycans, all taken from Tamiya's 1:48 Jerry Can Set. As well as US gear, this pack also provides German fuel cans, oil drums and more; it's extremely handy. Thin masking tape was used to 'secure' the load, although in reality it's copious quantities of superglue that actually holds it all in place. Over the top of all that is one
To create the visible layers of colour, acrylics from Mission Models' range were used; olive drab, khaki drab and other shades were employed on the model as can be seen here. One bottle was Blu-Tacked into the hull to form a convenient handle!

large tarpaulin sheet (from pewter foil), topped finally by an AL-140 Recognition Panel, made from the aluminium foil from a tub of coffee. This was painted off the model as it needed to be airbrushed; a base coat of Mr Color gloss white was followed by several layers of Mr Color Fluorescent Red, mixed with a little gloss white to create the pink shade. The edges were hand-painted olive drab and short lengths of cord added for the tie-downs. To paint this little Sherman, I first airbrushed an undercoat, in this case, Vallejo's olive drab Surface Primer, over the entire model. This material dries to form a tough, smooth and slightly flexible finish that can be over-painted with ease and takes knocks well. It also 'seals in' the photo-etched parts so they can accept model paints too. Once the undercoat had dried overnight, I employed Mission Models' excellent olive drabs from their acrylics range to create the final colours, although they would be subject to many colour-washes, dust applications and burnishing procedures later on, changing appearance significantly. Key to this model is the heavily dusty/muddy running gear. From the reference images I found online, the most appealing photos of Easy Eights sported dusty underpinnings, so to replicate this I incorporated the dust into the painting process itself, using Mission Models pale tan shades to form the basis of the pigments to follow. So, here is Tamiya's tiny but magnificent 1:48 M4A3E8, plus a few aftermarket goodies, in all its diminutive glory. Tamiya have done a great job with the model and it is easy to build. Add a few extras and it can look every bit as good as a 1:35 model, just with a much smaller footprint! â—? My thanks to Lester Plaskitt for the sea grass, Jan Sobotka at Hauler for the photoetched set and to Fields of Glory Models for the extremely quick delivery of the Value Gear resin boxes.

MATERIALS AND DETAIL PARTS
Mission Models offer several differing tones of olive drab that, when used in unison, allow the modeller to create varied shades across the model. They are extremely easy to use and cover well, via airbrush
To paint the AL-140 Recognition Panel, Mr Color 171 Fluorescent Red, mixed with a little Mr Color 316 White (gloss) were used to recreate the bright shade
Ultra narrow masking tape (1.5mm and other widths) was used to make the webbing straps that secure the stowage to the engine deck. Once in place, it was simply painted in canvas colours by hand
The box on the front of the tank comes from Value Gear's set No.C1. It's cast in resin and well detailed
To simulate a build up of matted, muddy grass and other detritus, fibres of 'sea balls' were chopped up and stuck on with matt varnish. AK Interactive offer this as 'dried sea grass' (www.ak-interactive.com)
The M2 .50cal machine gun, plus the muzzles of the hull and coaxial 30.cal, the towing cable and other structures were 'metalised' with silver and graphite colouring pencils

THE FINISHED MODEL
The fluorescent pink item on the rear of the tank depicts the AL-140 Recognition Panel, issued to Allied tanks to help prevent 'friendly fire' from loitering British and American fighter-bombers. The panels were white on their reverse sides to allow messages to be written
Here we can see where the sea grass was added around the suspension and along the track guards. It sees a shame to cover the superb detail with much, but this tank was always going to be a target for heavy weathering
The US Army pattern fuel cans come from Tamiya’s injection-moulded accessory set and the cardboard box (cast in resin) is from Black Dog. Note the folded tarpaulin, made from pewter foil and airbrushed with ultra-matt colours
A piece of thick plastic card was used to make the plank of scrap timber that spans the hull front. This impromptu shelf supports a resin case from an accessory set by Value Gear
From photos of Shermans in action, it is clear that crews sawed a rebate in their hull-front planks to accommodate the towing cable, secured to the transmission housing
Before painting, the headlights were hollowed out with a dental burr in a minidrill in preparation for the clear resin lenses (2mm in this case)
The kit includes an excellent commander figure, standing low in his cupola and shouting orders to the gunner through the microphone. The goggle lenses were painted metallic blue and the helmet given some scrapes and scoring
zles cable

ince I was very young in this hobby, Tamiya distinguished itself from all the other scale models firms. It was a time at which new releases in all scales were scarce, maybe just enough to can count them on the fingers of one hand. This was what gave us all the time needed to hyper-detail our models. However, unlike all the other available kits at that time, Tamiya's were so easy to build and, on average, so detailed that they could be built much faster and to a better appearance than many other, similar kits. Since those old times, I have changed a lot, but Tamiya has not changed that much. Holding this new 1:48 Bf109G-6 in my hands, I see that Tamiya has not even changed the graphic style of its boxes, from the box art to the side profiles, so much so that this new kit looks familiar to me, and in a very positive way. Another striking peculiarity of Tamiya as a kit producer is the effort to give to the modeller community something new and possibly surprising. Not only in a choice of subjects, which are usually very interesting, but in the technical engineering characteristics of the kits. The last time, with the Ki-61, the surprise was a second, completely transparent half-fuselage in order to give the possibility to show some glimpses of a fairly well detailed engine. This time, Tamiya designed the kit to easily allow the switching between a closed and fully open cowling configuration even after the build and painting process; the kit includes a full engine and two different set of cowlings. The engine is sufficiently detailed for this scale, the exhausts are dimensionally correct and the supercharger is a well moulded, separate part. However, the resulting little DB605A will benefit from some further treatment. Also the cockpit is very nice and, in a quite unconventional fashion, fits from the underside, making it possible to build up the fuselage before installing it.
Here we see the Eduard resin cockpit parts in their base colour, plus a colour-wash. Detail painting will follow; the castings are exquisite
With the fuel and oxygen lines hand-painted the correct colours, the cockpit parts can be installed within the fuselage

THINGS FIRST V FIRST As usual with aeroplane
kits, the assembly process starts in the cockpit. More precisely, from the two half-fuselages, inside of which we need to glue, one by one, all the major detail elements for the cockpit, such as the electric switches, fuel lines, and the engine throttles. Only after joining the two half-fuselage halves together comes the time to start working on the cockpit 'bathtub'. Floor, seat bottom, control column, rudder pedals are all more than adequately represented, however, I felt the need for something more, so I
looked out for some resin replacements finally choosing the amazing Eduard Brassin Bf109G-6 cockpit for Tamiya Gustav (648405). What makes Brassin detail sets different from all the other similar detailing sets is not only the incredible level of detail, but also the ease with which they replace the original parts, making large and difficult adaptations unnecessary. I painted all these interior parts according to the instructions, using Tamiya acrylic paints. As for the painting of details, the instructions are so clear and precise that it is a real pleasure to follow them
using the suggested colours. In common with many other German fighters of that time, the cockpit main colour of the Bf109G-6 was a quite dark grey (RLM 66). That colour needs a very thin wash of burnt umber oil paint, followed by a very gentle drybrushing with Humbrol Matt Aluminium (56) to bring it to life, especially in 1:48. I used a touches of Prismacolor pencil to create patches of exposed bare metal. The engine comes next. Again, Tamiya has engineered the moulds in a way that all the engine components fit without
problem; it's a complex, but perfect-fitting replica of the DB605A engine. To get a good fit you just need some Tamiya Extra Thin Cement and to follow very carefully the instructions, painting some of the engine parts before gluing them together as needed. As in the case of the cockpit, aside from some wiring, the only real improvement to be made to the entire engine block is the use of another detail set of the Eduard Brassin line, replacing the original exhaust stacks with those in resin and photo-etch, a timely release by this company (648402).
HGW’s rivet decal set is on and the model looks slightly surreal at this stage
The rivets come in waterslide decal form and are subtly raised
It’s a time-consuming process but as we can see to the right, the results can be spectacular

CANOPY PRECISION
The transparent mouldings are crystal clear and the unusual engineering of the windscreen grants a fit without any issues. The real issue is to be very careful in cutting the printed masks for windscreen and canopy. Given that with the passing of time I am becoming lazy, this time I switched for the pre cut masks released for this kit by Eduard (EX584). With all the main components of this model assembled, I thought this Tamiya kit was a good opportunity to try a new product: the HGW's Riveting Set (481029). To
this end, after a wash to remove all the residuals of the moulding process and the grease from my fingers, I sprayed the whole model with Gunze H-17 Cocoa Brown. After waiting for this to dry, I smoothed out all surfaces with wet sanding paper, initially with 4000-grit and then finer and finer. The next step was to brush all over the model with some Mr. Hobby Mr. Mark Softer Neo, to help the rivet decals to stick and conform to all surfaces. Removing the rivet carrier-film using some very sharp tweezers was probably the most
The underside was not ignored during the weathering process
challenging part of this process but, at the end, I was very pleased with the result. All camouflage was done using Tamiya acrylics, just as suggested in the instructions. Then, as I have always been used to doing, I tried to highlight the panelling and the three-dimensionality of the model with an oil paint colour-wash. To best matching the RLM74 and RLM75, the two greys of this camouflage, my choice was a quite thinned wash of Bruno Van Dick. Decals are very surprising, better than usual Tamiya standard. I chose version 'B' of the box. Slow
work and plenty of setting solution helped, but they stuck flawlessly to the model. The difficult correct positioning of the main undercarriage legs of the Bf109 has always been a weakness of the various 1:48 models of this aircraft. Finally, Tamiya has found a way to ensure not only the correct positioning of these legs, but also to ensure a good strength of this assembly. In my search for a higher level of detail, I took advantage of two other Eduard products: the wheels (648400) and the external fuel tank (648265).
U

The cowling was also covered with rivet decal, as we can see here
The correct forward/outward rake of the main undercarriage legs is perfected in this kit

The open engine cowlings have been given their camouflage colours and now await some light weathering
Test fitting is essential, even with this brilliantly engineered model
THOUGHTS? V FINAL At the end, I have to say
that building this new 1:48 Tamiya Bf109 was so easy that I did my best to increase the level of difficulty using some new and demanding aftermarket, like the HGW Rivets. Like in the case of the Ki-61 released two years ago, working on this kit has been at the same time easy and rewarding. So, I am very much looking forward to what will come next from Tamiya. â—?

n 1967, Norton launched the Commando 750 model to offset the shortcomings of the Norton Atlas, using many innovations designed to modernise the brand. The most important upgrades were undoubtedly the frame and the engine block; it was now inclined forward and installed in a tubular frame with a broad backbone and a double lower cradle. The frame was equipped with the
'isolastic' system of inserting large blocks of rubber between the tubular frame and the motor to reduce vibration. Polyester fairings, and a front disc brake were added from 1972. Numerous bikes were adapted for the US market and the '750 Commando would have a busy career, remaining Norton's flagship model of the '70s.
U
The 'chromed' parts can not be used as they are; the mouldings are coarse and rough and the plating is marred with dust. The best solution is to soak the parts in a bath of concentrated bleach for several days and then rub them with abrasives to remove the layer of residual varnish under the chrome
Examples of the roughly moulded parts. Fortunately, the base is good and after a sanding session, they are ready to be painted
MANDO!
The front brake disc is moulded completely smooth. Mounted on a mini drill mandrel, coarse-grained sandpaper was used to create the concentric traces of braking friction
The frame required all the modelling clean-up techniques; a new scalpel blade used perpendicularly to the structure removes much of the excess plastic, followed by refinement with files and sandpaper

The rims are very impressive, with an amazing moulding finesse for the scale: the spokes are very thin, less than a millimetre and thus retain the effect of scale. But they must still be refined by gently scraping back the moulding joints
The rims are mounted in an original way: the two halves with the spokes are trapped within the rims which are fixed without glue by hook-shaped tabs
An original touch in the model is a soft plastic chain. The problem is that the poor moulding of this material has caused flash that can not be sanded, so one must work with fine scissors and a new scalpel blade. Despite all this effort, the result remains fairly passable. Fortunately, the chain will be largely visible behind the chain guard
DOG, NEW TRICKS? V OLD With this release, Italeri
continues its reproduction of iconic machines from old Protar moulds and in the case of the Commando, it comes with a pleasant surprise, with remarkable finesse involved in the moulding of the spoked wheel rims, a key feature of any motorcycle kit. The modeller will certainly need to refine each spoke to eliminate the small moulding lines, but their scale thickness is so much more realistic than previous models (Manx, MV Agusta) that I did not consider replacing them with thinner metal rods at all. The rest of the mouldings are satisfactory, but very coarse in finish. I spent several evenings scraping each piece so that it would be presentable once painted. I even had to de-chrome the two plated sprues with a very long bath in bleach to be able to rework their appearance. A soft vinyl sprue provides all the wiring as well as saddle cover, handles, tyres and chain. The advantage is that the bike will be loaded with all its circuits,
22
Assembly began with the engine (painted TS-17 Aluminium and TS-83 Silver) that is attached to the frame. The small flat screws are very hard to screw in, so it was necessary to systematically enlarge each hole with a suitably sized drill bit that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the thread of screw, or to enlarge the holes and to fix the screws with cyanoacrylate (superglue)
On the soft plastic sprue, there are very realistic and easy-to-install cables clamps
The fairings are difficult to fix because the battery is mounted without gluing and the screw that must fix them is 'in the air', without resistance for tightening. You must acrobatically insert a pair of fine tweezers behind the frame to be able to press the screwdriver effectively, without scratching the platinum silver below! The rear fender was fixed at the same time as the backrest, with a single screw that's very misplaced and extremely difficult to insert. It was replaced by a Tamiya crosshead screw for ease

The 'bubble' windscreen was fixed along one edge with the fairing. A small hole was drilled in the fairing and the glazing to insert a mini metal rod that would act as a location guide
In the process, the headlight glazing was drilled out to take four screws for realism. A masking tape template was made to try to achieve perfect square between the four screws
Model Factory Hiro rivets and Tamiya screws were used, which add a very realistic touch. The bottom of the ‘bubble’ was painted black to represent the seal on the real machine and also hides the hole of the guide rod
Remember the height of the handlebars! If they are fitted as suggested, the cowling will not fit over them. Their height was therefore adjusted by the author
All the wiring is is depicted; everything is there! The fuel lines, supplied in transparent tubing, were painted in clear orange
both hydraulic and electric, without having to redo it all oneself. The flaw is that the soft vinyl material is very difficult to clean up and the moulding is far from perfect. Sanding is impossible of course, so the flash was removed with fine, sharp scissors and new scalpel blade, taking great care not to slip; it can not be re-glued if an accidental cut is made. The kit includes very realistic screws for final assembly, but they extremely difficult to use because the threads are very fine-pitched and the straight-cut heads are flat, so the screwdriver is prone to skidding. Note also a that the windscreen 'bubble' – in itself accurately shaped – is very thick and no locations tabs are included. This is true for other parts too

V (particularly the saddle/rear
mudguard sub-assembly) but a beautiful decal sheet and an accurate overall profile make up for these deficiencies. I had a great time building this Commando. The scale of 1:9 is demanding but allows a real enhancement of the mechanical parts. However, the model remains very fragile and I think it is not an ideal project for a beginner; it takes a lot of experience plus fine modelling tools to achieve something presentable. While waiting for new releases in the world of the motorcycle modelling, it is a real pleasure to dive back into these old bikes with that smell of oil, gasoline and bitumen. I'm attacking the Manx soon and then I'll be waiting for Italeri's next classic re-issue! ●

KIT PREVIEW VICTORY MODELS/AMATI 1:72 HMS VANGUARD 1787 ● KIT NO.1300/04
AVAST VANGUARD! James Hatch takes a belated look at the magnificent Victory Models/Amati kit of HMS Vanguard in 1:72
H
MS Vanguard was a 74-gun, third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 6th March 1787 at Deptford; she was the sixth vessel to bear the name. She was designed by Sir Thomas Slade for the Royal Navy and were designed as a development of Slade's previous Bellona class, sharing the same basic dimensions. I must apologise if we seem a little late to the show with this release, with the kit originally being released around 2007, give or take a year or three. However, unlike the world of plastic modelling that I usually frequent, these sorts of kits stand the test of time far better. If you order this kit, you really need to make sure that you have bench space for it! Sounds obvious, but it comes in a very large box and weighs in the region of 14-15kg (30lbs+). The model can be finished as either
26
HMS Vanguard, Elephant or Bellerophon, the latter being of great interest as she was the vessel on which the Captain Frederick Lewis Maitland accepted the surrender of Napoleon Bonaparte on July 15th, 1815. Inside the box we have strip and dowel timber bundled together and bound with small lengths of elastic string, three large boxes of components, one smaller box of components, several packs of various flat timbers with laser-cut parts, king-size instruction manual and a whopping 20-plan pack with a heavy gauge photo-etch fret of embellishments for the stern quarters etc. Onto the next box. I know it’s not the done thing, as we say, to add sails to this sort of model, although many do and make a superb job. If you do wish to go down that avenue, then a large piece of sail cloth is included for you,
as are two sheets of plans which pertain to adding these. It must be ten or twelve years since the kit first hit the shelves, and here we are a decade or more on, and I finally get to take a glimpse at this masterpiece. I really like the inclusion of MDF for the main structure (bulkheads, horizontal former and false keel) as this has almost zero tendency to warp. In the review sample, they are die-straight and will form the basis of an accurate and trouble-free build. All timber stock is first rate (for this third-rate ship!), and fixtures and fittings are high quality. Having the upper bulwarks as pre-cut parts with their jigsaw fit and pre-cut cannon port is also a time saver and a big help in ensuring that all guns will mount in their correct place and the correct height/elevation. A comprehensive plan
pack ensures that every constructional angle is covered, and with twenty plans, Amati haven’t cut any corners. This isn’t a beginner’s model, and I’m sure you’ve heard that phrase many times before, but in this case, you really must have a number of builds under your belt and be able to exercise a degree of project management and prerequisite modelling skills to cater to and overcome the challenges that a complex model like this will demand. In all, a super kit of a formidable class of ship and with all the bells and whistles to build any of three vessels. You can’t do better than that! My sincere thanks to Amati for sending this kit for review. To purchase directly, check out your local Amati model stockist or online Amati retailer. ● www.amatimodel.com

THE ROAD TO TUNIS T
amiya always has the ability to surprise us by announcing new and original kits. And sometimes, they launch a new model that replaces a subject that's been in the catalogue for many years, as is the case with the new M3 Stuart Light Tank. Tamiya released the original M3 back in 1974 and became a perennial favourite with modellers. After having served with distinction for over four decades, Tamiya decided to replace the kit with a wholly new model for 2018, the subject of this review. It depicts is the M3 with a riveted hull; later it will be welded. This late-production model was equipped with
a new turret with two hatches. Since most of these machines were shipped to the Soviet Union as part of the Lend-Lease mutual aid program between Allies, it was logical that there are two Soviet decal options in the box. A third markingsoption makes it possible to represent one of these end-ofproduction M3s in the colours of the US Army engaged in the Tunisian Campaign at the beginning of 1943. These three possibilities are very attractive and I had a hard time to decide which one to go for; Russian winter or arid Tunisian landscape? As you can see, I chose a dusty US machine...
Tamiya had the excellent idea to mould the shield panels of the upper hull separately. Just install them following the instructions
U
The breakdown of each panel of the body armour makes it possible to obtain perfectly moulded rivets without distortion and completely realistic
The suspension bogies are installed on shafts moulded with the floor, which guarantees excellent rigidity and ideal positioning. Be careful to install the guides at the top of each bogie (parts A11-A12) in the correct direction
The separate panels of the hull follow the construction scheme of the actual armour
All flaps can be presented in the open position but no detail is provided for the interior. The handles will eventually be redone with brass wire before painting The undercarriage is quickly assembled, then it was installed on the side walls of the hull

V CONSTRUCTION Assembly presents no
problems and the breakdown of the chassis into several plates should not frighten you, the whole lot fits together perfectly. The suspension is very authentic and finely detailed (the wheels feature subtle welding seams along their spokes) and each bogie is inserted into a moulded axle within the hull floor, which ensures flawless rigidity. The tracks, moulded in soft, synthetic rubber, are very realistic and have the advantage of being
easy to fit. In addition, they can be painted with Tamiya acrylics. The upper part of the hull comprises a structure on which the modeller installs the various riveted plates. Again, the fit here is impeccable. The details are hyper-realistic, especially the rivets which, being moulded on individual panels, are perfectly formed. The turret is assembled in a jiffy. I made some minor improvements that I detailed in the pictures that illustrate this article.
U
The engine air vents are supplied in plastic in the Tamiya box, but the author decided to redo them using photo-etched metal mesh and strips of plastic card. The bolts were made with small discs cut from stretched sprue
The author decided to redo the headlight guards with thin strips of plastic card, because those included with the kit seemed too thick
On the roof of the turret, the author sanded the flap of the tank commander's periscope flush. He was then able to then reproduce the vision block in the open position using an periscope (M4 Sherman) found in the spares box. A small rectangle of plastic card serves as the protection flap
The turret hatch handles were replaced by new ones made with brass wire
The tips of the Browning machine gun barrels were The .30cal machine gun is a new moulding and has drilled out using a Tamiya mini-drill of 0.2mm in an excellent level of detail, as does its mount and diameter the coaxial and side machine guns. The latter were not installed because they were not mounted on the American M3
The tripod for the Browning machine gun was installed on the fender and the straps were reproduced with thin strips of Tamiya tape
30
The tool straps were also made with Tamiya tape. They are secured by small dots of cyanoacrylate glue

Painting the Stuart
After having covered the olive drab base colour with a coat of TS-13 Clear varnish spray, the decals were applied using softener so that they perfectly cover the shapes of the turret. Once the decals were perfectly dry, a new coat of gloss varnish was applied to protect them
The steel elements of the tools were touched in with a metallic hue, while the handles were given a chipped wooden appearance
The advantage of using Tamiya Weathering Sticks is that they can be erased once dry with a slightly damp paint brush, to create variations in the weathering's intensity
On the hull, the author created splashes by flicking paint from a flat brush
V PAINTING The winter camouflage M3 will
have to wait a bit; it was with great enthusiasm that I turned to the American version. So I chose the version of the US 1st Armored Division that was engaged in the Campaign of Tunisia in 1943. The idea of making a machine covered with dust was enough to convince me and allowed me to try different techniques that I will share with you over the following pages. The three stages of 'dusting', once combined, make it possible to create a very convincing appearance, but each of them used alone can give you an already very satisfactory appearance. It's up to you to see how far you want to go...
32
November 2018 TMMI 277
p 28-35 M3Stuart 277MN 32
The initial dust effects were created with 'paint' taken from the tip of Tamiya Weathering Stick (sand colour) using a flat brush. This was then diluted with tap water before applying it to the entire model
U
The first colour-washes were made using the sand-coloured Tamiya Weathering Stick again
28/09/2018 20:05
To accentuate the dusty aspect of the hull, the author sprayed on a very diluted mixture of Buff and Flesh Tamiya acrylics (70% XF-57 + 30% XF-15)
The ‘dust mix’ (XF-57 + XF-15) was also applied on the top of the hull, on areas where dust naturally accumulates, in recesses and fenders, as well as on the front of the body
In order to further accentuate the dusty aspect, the author decided to apply a last sand-coloured enamel Humbrol paint that had been diluted with a lot of white spirit. The different modules (upper and lower hull and turret) were painted and weathered separately

Preparing the tracks
The tracks provided in the kit are moulded in the usual black synthetic black rubber and assemble easily with model glue. They were first covered with the 'dust mix' used on the rest of the kit (XF57 + XF15)
The 'rubber' track pads were drybrushed with matt black while the metal parts were highlighted with a steel colour
V CONCLUSION This 100% new kit of the
American light tank is a great success that will delight fans of American equipment or those wanting to face the Eastern Front! A kit faithful to the Tamiya philosophy: simple and easy to assemble without sacrificing the slightest detail. A good opportunity to rediscover a relatively unknown craft despite its participation in large numbers in the Second World War. â—?

urking in the back of the stash, I found something shining out amongst the rest like a bea con of difference. For some reason, Tamiya’s bonkers Gazoo-l iveried TRD86 seems to get overlooked for other projects and not just by me. So when the opportunity arose to build the TRD 86 I felt compelled to give it a shot. My aim was always to help this understated model shine brightly and proudly amongst Tam iya’s 1:24 Sports Car Series collection. Using extensive rese arch for the whole build (and boy did I go deep) even with grea t advice and help from Toyota UK themselves, I set myself a fun plan to dramatically enhance the boxer engine and bay area, the under-chassis with all of its components and anything in betw een that reared its scaled face.

WITH THE DETAILS… V DOWN Let’s get straight into it and
start at the front end. Hobby Design do a good base-pack for this model that includes some interior photo-etch dress-up parts and a good few external areas. Various other detail brands were used throughout the build and will be mentioned later on. I started by dry-fitting and replacing the lower front bumper grill with the HD part; the Tamiya grill is solid plastic whereas the HD etch part is mesh. This would act as a window into the radiator and lower engine details which I would also be reworking and upgrading. More etch details were added in various places around the engine and bay including the tops of the inner wing, hose clips, logo badges, wire bands, photo-etch weld seems, rivet heads, resin bolts, cables, conduit and so on - the list was pretty extensive in that area. The Subaru Boxer block was carefully researched as to where the electric cables began and ended where they passed by other cables along the way.
The author chose colours from the Zero Paints line for the engine and interior
Here we can see the basic kit parts for the engine; so much more is to come...
Here we can observe the extras added to the kit’s engine, including some re-built parts and plenty of plumbing
The belt moulding require some extremely precise masking and painting
GETTING HEAVY UP FRONT… The thing that grabbed me with this challenge car was how close to the road car it still is. The challenge series car is not a thoroughbred rally car and due to strict regulations, many standard parts are still present, including the carpets, a stereo and the AC compressor with its fittings. So I set about reworking the compressor by reshaping the Tamiya moulded part and adding in thin styrene sheets to build it up, using T2M bolt fittings, the inlet and outlet AC pipes then finally power cables that run from the area into their respective connections. The battery was next for some fun enhancements. I scratchbuilt a battery-tray holder using styrene sheet, brass rod, ‘Top Studio’ rivet heads and some very cool ‘Detail Master’ photo-etch battery connections. The main body of the battery was given a liquid level fluid line for realism (although I should have given a higher level) and dressed it up
U
38
The radiator was plumbed-up with pipes and given welding seams too
The battery was heavily modified to include cables and a proper mounting tray
The author drilled a galaxy of holes in the undertray to receive rivets and bolts for a more detailed appearance

Tamiya’s Panel Line Accent Color is very useful when applying localised ‘pin’ washes to accentuate detail
More Zero Paints were used on the underbody areas, applied exclusively by airbrush
Transaxle with driveshafts and the suspension struts, all immaculately masked and sprayed by the author for super-crisp results
The rear suspension unit looks very punchy in its varied shades of black with metallic highlights and flat black UJ boots
Extra care was taken with the finish of the exhaust system; not rusty of course, but with a subtle heat-stained effect applied by airbrush
Polystyrene rod was cut to length and shaped to create the extra element required for accuracy

V using warning decals and
a big ‘TRD’ logo – because it's a race car. It was all wired up and fitted to the bulkhead. The main engine parts were fixed to the front end and wired up into the respective areas. Whilst researching the TRD86 engine bay and all of its similar variants (FRS, GT86, BRZ) I found there was a lot of grey conduit running all around the engine bay. So I went in search on the net and came across the perfect solution in the shape of ‘Prime–miniatures’. Dominic is a one-man band and supplies a great line of generic upgrade parts to fit and suit most disciplines of model type, so his site is worth checking out. The conduit was the perfect scale and also hollow, so that meant the electric cables were easily fed through. I airbrushed sections of conduit grey, cut them to size and fed them all around the engine bay. It was all looking like an engine now, much to my relief.
Zero Paints ‘Textured Black’ forms the Alcantara effect on the steering wheel
Tricky masking operations were performed on the dashboard to create precise and tidy colour boundaries
The result of all that fiddly masking can be seen here; a very neat dashboard and steering wheel!
JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SEE IT DOESN’T MEAN ITS NOT THERE…
The chassis seems detailed, but in my eyes screamed out for attention. So again, using correct references, I set to work on enhancing the underbody by firstly drilling out around eighty holes to include drainage and receive various sizes of resin bolts. The whole area was carefully masked off in several stages, then, using colour matched Zero Paints, many shades were used to separate each moulded in part. The running gear had more similar re-worked detail treatment with ‘Master Club’ resin bolts, details from Hobby Design and finished off with some Top Studio photo-etch for good measure. The final piece of the Gazoo chassis jigsaw puzzle was the exhaust. Using more references as to how this system looked used I based-coated with Zero Paints aluminium, heat stained with Alclad 2’s Hotmetal colours and the chassis was complete.

More Textured Black was used for the inner Alcantara sections of the racing seats. More masking, again... ...and the result is fantastic!
Tamiya masking tape was used during the preparation for the central red strips...

COME INSIDE…
The basic interior is a pretty sparse, lifeless place, so bringing it to life was going to be fun. I began by correcting the roll cage as the kit-supplied part was missing a central strut. This was airbrushed matt black according to the real car. The majority of the interior including door cards, bucket seats, the dashboard and rear section benefits from lots of careful masking; my speciality. Many Zero Paints colour changes were used to obtain the desired finish, but all was worth it. The flooring and rear shelf was covered with Zero Paints Flocking to create the effect of fabric alongside Zero’s texture paint to give different surface finishes. The seats were added in and belted up with real green silk ribbon for that more authentic finish. They were fed through the seat upper and fitted to the revised roll cage centre bar. Finally, the dashboard was dressed up with some carbon parts, enhanced digital display and that steering wheel… It has white and yellow stripes, why? They were designed as a guide to help the driver understand corner speeds better. Number one on the bottom of the wheel meaning we need to turn the car through tighter, slower bends and number six at the top showing less turn and more speed. Simple right?
SHELLING OUT…
The paint scheme was followed as per the instructions and then lacquered so the surface was smooth. I felt this was necessary as there were some seriously big decals
With the base silver colour on, the body shell was masked off to take the black
Seatbelts are one of the more patience-testing tasks of a model car build. The author chose turquoise ribbon for the webbing of the Toyota’s straps, with photo-etched parts for the buckles and adjusters
The ribbon can be a little ‘springy’ so the completed belts must be stuck down to the seat for realism. It’s eye-straining work but the results are spectacularly convincing
The back ends of the seat harnesses were secured to the horizontal element of the rollcage, as per reality
but more importantly I’d had many warnings about the decals and their know difficulties on application. So all corners were covered, the gloves were on and I was ready for battle. Straight away I noticed these decals were not up to the usual
Tamiya standard. They were thick, didn’t like corners or curves, didn’t respond to well to softening solutions, cracked easily and ripped often. Many swear-words were harmed in the application process... That said, the result
Zero Paints are easy to use and offer a professional finish when applied correctly
gave me huge satisfaction and just looked amazing. I left the decals to cure for twenty-four hours then covered it all in Zero Paints two-part clear lacquer. After four days curing time, I then set about flatting and polishing to a showroom
U
Decals on and sealed with two-part gloss varnish; the finish is ultra glossy and very slick

in love with this car and its outrageous style. All that was left was to bring it all together; wheels, windows, details and one more final polish for good measure.
WRAPPING UP…
All in all, once you get to grips with the decals and how to handle them, the model itself is a wonderful piece of Tamiya engineering. No real fit issues, parts were beautifully moulded, the instructions were superbly laid out and it has one of those rare things in a modern Tamiya Sports Car; an engine! I really had fun working with this model and bringing it to life. I learnt so much about the real thing and also met some very knowledgeable people who helped me achieve my modelling goal. The engine work for me was a personal achievement in my detail journey and well worth the research and effort I put into all of that adapting. It just shows that with a great base Tamiya kit we as modellers are limitless in our imagination as to how far we want to take our projects. ●

REVELL, EUROPE
US TOURING BIKE www.revell.de/en SCALE: 1:8 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.07379 If you fancy a large-scale motorcycle model project with tons of chrome and ladles of American character, Revell’s recently released ‘US Touring Bike’ in big 1:8 is just the ticket. It’s not a new tooling by any means but the kit parts are packed with detail and there are two large sprues of plated parts! The engine, gearbox wheelspoke rims, exhaust pipes, front forks, headlight and more will be found on them and the parts will require careful removal from the their trees to prevent damage to the bright finish. Light grey is used for the other parts and most are well formed, with just some hints of flash here and there; easy to remove with a fresh model knife blade and a sanding stick. This is a fun kit from Revell that is packed with detail from top to bottom; you will need to spend some time on clean-up and you might wish to de-chrome some parts to ensure a glue-seam free assemble, but the result could be spectacular.
Wonderful subject, with loads of road-trip character. Large scale. Clearly designed as an HD but for this release, the decals are generic
REVELL, EUROPE
MERCEDES-BENZ UNIMOG U 1300 L WINTERDIENST www.revell.de/en SCALE: 1:24 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, MC, WS ITEM NO.07438 Revell’s European division is based in Germany, so over the years we have been treated to some rather esoteric Germanic machinery in the 1:24 line that would not normally be seen in other parts of the world; fire engines, trucks etc., all from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Magirus and others. One of the more recent vehicles of this type is the Unimog ‘Winterdienst’ (winter service) which features a massive snow-plough up front and a gritter distributor at the rear with the grit hopper on the load-bed. The whole thing is deliciously mechanical, giving it instant appeal to modellers who want something slightly ‘different’. The mouldings date from the late 1980s and have faired extremely well over the years; the detail is exceptionally good and the moderate parts-count means it will be a reasonably quick build. New decals are provided for various localities in Germany.
The Unimog is always cool and Revell’s kit does it justice. Great detail and exposed mechanical parts make this an attractive model No obvious bad points here

BRISTOL BEAUFIGHTER TF.X www.revell.de SCALE: 1:48 MATERIALS: IM, WS ITEM NO.03943 Revell officially announced their new-tool kit of the beefy Bristol Beaufighter TF.X back at this year’s Nuremberg Toy Fair and now it has landed on TMMI’s review desk, we can take a proper look at the kit parts and decals. As mentioned, this is a completely new moulding by Revell and not a cooperation with any other manufacturer. It depicts the torpedo bomber version and comes with the option for the ‘thimble-nose’ radar-equipped variant. Revell’s kit is an impressively thorough production with a pair of very detailed Hercules XVII radial engines with intake and exhaust ducts, positionable elevators, rudder, ailerons and wing flaps. The cockpit is well appointed too, featuring individual structural frames either side of the pilot’s position, side-consoles, instrument panel and rudder pedals. The radio operator/ rear gunner’s position is well rendered too. A very cool new kit of this WW2 RAF ship-killer.
RYE FIELD MODEL
TIGER I LATE PRODUCTION www.tigerhobbies.co.uk SCALE: 1:35 MATERIALS: IM, PE, MC, WS ITEM NO.RM-5015 Rye Field Model’s latest Sd.Kfz.181 Tiger I ausf.E kit represents the late-production variant of the tank which saw action on the Eastern Front and in France during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. Every armour modeller has their favourite Tiger I (don’t they?), but this iteration is arguably the most attractive from a modelling point of view as it sports zimmerit (to be applied by the modeller) and has the steel-rimmed wheels which, in this author’s opinion, give the tank a very purposeful look. Plus, you can built Michael Wittmann’s ‘007’ from this release. RFM’s kit is another of their magnificent productions with refined detail on every surface, various equipment-fit options and workable individual-link tracks with individual guide-horns. The latter detail is fiddly but is the only practical way to depict the open design of these parts. Photo-etched engine grilles are provided, as is a star antenna, copper tow cable and even a zimmerit tool!
Iconic RAF subject, all-new tooling, thimblenose option and a whopping great torpedo slung below. What more could you want?
An evergreen modelling subject of arguably the most interesting Tiger I variant. Extraordinary detail (no interior here)
The modeller must source their own seat harnesses; not a big deal

URAL 4320 RUSSIAN ARMY TRUCK www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.3654 Zvezda’s 2017 release of the mammoth Soviet/Russian Ural 4320 truck allows modellers to replicate this exceptional machine in 1:35 with great detail. The real thing is enormously capable and has served in many theatres of operation including the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the ‘80s and in New Orleans, USA during the devastating flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The kit benefits from the Zvezda’s ability to reproduce phenomenal levels of detail in injection-moulded polystyrene, something that propelled them into the modern world in recent years. The entire vehicle is depicted here, from the partby-part ladder frame chassis and huge leaf-spring suspension to a beautifully rendered engine plus authentic cabin and cargo deck. It’s no quick build but it is a very impressive kit. The wheels come in flexible black vinyl and are very well detailed, but it will be hard to impart a weighted appearance.

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
THE LONGEST DAY DUAL COMBO LIMITED EDITION www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, PE, R, PCM, WS ITEM NO.2125 Eduard’s recent 1:72 kit of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc is now regarded as the finest model of this iconic World War Two British fighter yet released, its accuracy and detail setting new standards; it’s a hard act to follow. The model sports a cockpit so detailed it could put a 1:32 Spitfire kit to shame and the airframe not only has extremely fine recessed panel lines (naturally) but also ultrafine rivet/fastener lines too. This might sound a bit over-the-top for 1:72, but it looks amazing in practice. These factors all make this ‘dual combo’ release even more appealing, if it wasn’t already. In the box we have two whole kits, along with photoetched instrument panels, seat harnesses, radiator grilles and more, resin barrels for the ‘beer bomber’ option plus pre-cut canopy masks and decals or two of six markings-options. The D-Day theme is the cherry on the cake.

BF109G-10 MTT REGENSBURG PROFIPACK EDITION www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, PCM, WS ITEM NO.82119 (BFC049 w/RAF markings) The Bf109G-10 was one of the later variants of the Luftwaffe’s core fighter and it featured many technical differences from previous, outwardly similar-looking ‘109s. Eduard’s new kit takes these minutiae into account of course, the most apparent being the Erlastyle canopy. Throughout the instructions we can observe many options are offered and thus it’s essential to make a firm choice of which aircraft you are depicting before starting your build. The cockpit is beautifully designed with lost of individual parts for the flight controls and internal structures. The instrument panel is a little work of art, with multiple layers used to accurately portray its construction. Five decal options offer markings for late-war aircraft serving over Prague, Germany, Sweden and in this special issue, even a captured machine in RAF markings.
DRAGON, HONG KONG
IJN TYPE 2 (KA-MI) AMPHIBIOUS TANK W/ FLOATING PONTOON EARLY PRODUCTION SMART KIT www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, PE, CW, WS ITEM NO.6916 It’s very imaginative of Dragon to choose this esoteric subject for a 1:35 kit, but we are grateful for it nonetheless. It depicts the peculiar-looking Ka-Mi ‘floating tank’ used by the Imperial Japanese Navy in World War Two for amphibious operations in the Pacific theatre of operations and in this release the little Type 2 gets the full flotation gear front and back. This makes it look even weirder and ungainly therefore, even more ‘model-genic’. The new parts are fantastically well detailed, with fine welding seams where the panels were fused together and it’s a relief that they are not just plain add-on parts. The tank itself is pin-sharp, with some of Dragon’s best detail-work in evidence. This is a classy model and represents Dragon at their very best. The subject is also a prime target for weathering addicts, so get those airbrushes ready!
A wonderful kit with heaps of detail and options for evocative late-war machines
Very odd but fascinating subject. The kit is fantastically well detailed
So many options are offered, it’s relatively easy to use the wrong parts

KIT PREVIEW KINETIC 1:48 M-346 ADVANCED FIGHTER TRAINER ● KIT NO.K48063
Kinetic’s all-new 1:48 M-346 might offer some slight modelling challenges, but it captures the little trainer’s looks perfectly
SPLIT PERSONALITY K
inetic’s kit of the M-346 is a 100% original production from this manufacturer and depicts the M-346 trainer, which was developed by the Alenia Aermacchi company after a joint project between them and the Russian Yakovlev manufacturer dissolved in 2000. The agreement was to co-design a modern, high-tech aircraft for export but after the two manufacturers went their separate ways, the result was two superficially identical aircraft, the M-346 we see here and the Yak-130 trainer. It’s an extremely attractive aeroplane that has echoes of the F-16 in its wings, the BAE Hawk in its canopy and even the F/A-18 in plan-form. Kinetic’s kit is a wonderful production that sports arguably the most refined detail they have yet achieved; it’s light years ahead of their F-16s released some years back. The fuselage is split, unconventionally, through
its horizontal axis and the top section incorporates the upper wing halves, which ensures perfect and considerable rigidity. The cockpit is more conventional, building up into a module that is sandwiched between the upper and lower fuselage parts. Unusually though, the forward nose section (two halves) close around the frontal part of the tub during its installation. This might introduce some challenging issues of fit, but that will only become apparent during actual assembly. One potentially tricky cementing operation is apparent on the model before constructions starts; the rear fuselage. The tapering compound curves of this area have forced the kit’s designers to place the joint along panel lines and it will be worth making multiple test-fitting operations to close up the gap as tightly as possible, to reduce the need to putty which would obscure the
excellent detail that borders the glued line. The big canopy is supremely clear but some slight abrasion from its plastic bag left a matrix of fine scratches along the top of the mouldings (two are supplied) but this can be easily polished. Markingsoptions are supplied for the prototype (001) in metallic blue and the initial production machine (SN00) in metallic red, plus decals for Singaporean, Israeli, Polish and Italian air force machines, all in various grey camouflage schemes. Aside from slight trepidation with complex joint lines, this looks to be an extremely well made kit of the pretty M-346 and it’s surely something a little different to the more usual modern military jets, even if it does resemble some of them at certain angles! ● AVAILABILITY; Kinetic models are available from Lucky Model. www.luckymodel.com

ere we have Hobbyboss’s excellent AMX-T/A-1B kit in 1:48. I say excellent because of the great fit and buildability of the model; in fact I had already built the single seat variant of this kit, the A-1A and it was such a pleasure to build that I decided to purchase the double seater as well. It turned out to be an equally
enjoyable experience. I was in the midst of another project which was giving me some trouble, so at that point I grabbed the AMX to give me some 'smooth sailing', which it did. The other project is still on the shelf of doom.. I started off with the cockpit, as is usually the case. The detailing in the kit 'pit is actually very nice and the raised detail was
easily touched in with a small brush. There are some photo-etched harnesses included in the box to add to the ejection seats but I didn’t use those, instead I substituted them with a pair of resin bang-seats for a Mirage 2000 from Wolfpack Designs instead. They are not exactly the right type for this jet but they are close enough and that’s fine by me.

The build of the kit itself was a walk in the park, it all fitted really well. Nice touches in this kit are the air-brakes on top of the wings and the extended slats and flaps, all of which fitted perfectly. I did thin the edges of the air-brakes somewhat because the plastic is quite thick. Then onto painting; like all my models these days, I primed this one with Alclad 2 Black Primer and Micro Filler which I believe is superb stuff. The same can be said for their Aquagloss which I use for gloss coats on all my builds. Just one thin coat of this primer and a light swipe with a worn sanding stick gives it a smooth finish.
CAMOUFLAGE
For the main paint job I used Mr Hobby Aqueous paints. I first applied a light coat of the base colour on
the centre of each panel and following this, a 'marbling' effect. When this was done, I misted-on light coats of the base colour until the right effect was achieved. The goal was to let the marbling shine through to create the effect of a lot of different shades on each panel. This was applicable for both colours, grey and green. For the final stages, I took the base colours and lightened them in various stages to highlight each panel and created the effect of faded paint. Normally for greens, I use lighter shades but because the green areas on these jets fades quite a lot. I used white instead which was a great tip from one of my modeller friends. After painting, I applied a coat of Alclad Aquagloss, then a light buff with the worn sanding stick and then the colour-washes. I always
The pre-shading technique was employed to bring some variation to the main grey tone of the AMX’s camouflage finish
use Mig Productions and AK Interactive enamel washes. Then onto the decals. I know Hobbyboss decals aren’t the best around, but my experience varies with each kit and the decals for the AMX were just fantastic. They came off of the backing
paper really easily, are nice and thin and responded well to decal solutions (I use Daco, the strong version). After the markings were on I applied another coat of Aquagloss and sanded it lightly, again with a worn sanding stick.
To form the boundaries between the grey and green camouflage colours, the author used ‘worms’ of Blu-Tack and Tamiya masking tape

Star Decals have two new sets on release for British AFVs that took part in Operation Desert Storm, 1991. For the Challenger I, we have decals for the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, 7th Armoured Brigade with some nicely done hand-written markings as well as Saltires and Coalition chevrons. For the M109 and AS90 self-propelled howitzers we have decals for 2 Field Regiment Royal Artillery, 4th Armoured Brigade. The latter set also covers Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003. Top quality products with clear application guides.

TIME FOR SOME WEATHERING
I always try to achieve the most of the weathering effect with the airbrush, but recently I have added another technique to my repertoire, which is the use of pastels. I took black and brown pastel sticks and scraped them into powder with a knife and mixed them
up. I randomly applied the powder with a coarse brush and used my fingertips to achieve the desired weathering effect. The great thing with using these pastels on a coat of Aquagloss is that you can easily wipe it off and start over again if you are not entirely satisfied with your work, excellent stuff!
Another bonus with using this technique is that you can weather the decals in the process. After all this, I applied the final coat, Alclad’s wonderful Klear Kote Matte in a 50/50 mix with turpentine. This gives you full control over how matt you want your kit, never whites out and cures well. The landing gear is also
very well detailed but needed some extra wiring and piping, so I added that myself using of coloured copper thread and brass wire. For me, one little thing which is a letdown on this kit is that it comes with synthetic rubber wheels. I like to make my own weighted wheels and this is nearly impossible to achieve

itself is well engineered and locks into the wheel-bays like a glove. My conclusion is that this a very nice kit which builds like a dream and I highly recommend it to all modellers who are into this particular subject. I think that I might be adding another one of these to the stash in the future! â—?

Airbrush Cleaner Our fast & effective Ultimate Airbrush Cleaner is specifically formulated to work with ALL brands of acrylic modellers paint and all types of airbrush. Our cleaner is not overly aggressive and will not ruin the seals in your airbrush. We have also added a blue dye to the cleaner to be able to distinguish it from our thinner. Photo-Etch Placer Our photo-etch placer is a re-usable wax based positioning stick that will help you to hold and place even the smallest piece of photo-etch or styrene. A real helping hand when dealing with the more fiddly side of modelling.
Primer Our Ultimate Primer is a water based acrylic polyurethane self levelling surface primer. Offering a simple and easy application with excellent adhesion and durability, it dries to a hard flat finish and is simple and easy to clean up. It’s also fine to sand. There are seven colours to choose from: Grey, black, white, gloss black, olive, oxide and gelb. Ultimate Primer can be applied with a brush, airbrush and sponge for use on styrene, plastics, resin, metals, woods and various other substrates.
Weathering Wash Ultimate Weathering Wash has been formulated with several key non-toxic ingredients to bring you a superior clay based wash to add detail and realism to your model. The nine vibrant colours in our range cover the most widely used in modelling. Be aware, the wash will dry slightly lighter than the colour of the bottle and a good shake and stir is recommended before use.
Modellers Sanders Our range of specially produced Ultimate Modellers Sanders provide an excellent abrasive solution for the discerning modeller. Uniquely shaped they are provided in several grits (100/180/220/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit). They are long lasting and washable, which will allow them to be used to their maximum potential with the minimum of waste. Thinny Sticks Our range of Thinny Stick Sanders have been developed specifically to help modellers get to those hard to sand areas on all genres of models. They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series NEW How to Build... TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A and F4U-1D CORSAIR When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic model kits. Each model since then has seen incremental improvements. Just when you think the series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves you wrong. Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every respect. Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included several new sprues and offered a wider range of camouflage and marking possibilities. Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit includes a significant number of brand new sprues to depict the unique attributes of this variant. We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown and accuracy. In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty of inspiration with two different configurations and colour schemes. We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s 1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk around of a Corsair under restoration.

Military Collection No. 12 1/48 German Luftwaffe Crew (Winter) with Kettenkraftrad Item No: 32412
Winter e m i t r Wa ers ll e d o M y r a it il M & For Aircraft
This assembly kit recreates winter crew from the Luftwaffe, the WWII German air arm which includes pilots and a range of crew in supporting roles. German troops were exposed to serious winter conditions as their 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union dragged on, and naturally Luftwaffe pilots and crew had winter gear to combat the cold. Many pilots wore a leather jacket with fur collar. Sentries, who would spend long stretches in the elements, were issued with heavy overcoats and thick leather and felt boots. The trusty Kettenkraftrad half-track was a ubiquitous sight around German WWII troops, combining two tracks with the front wheel and steering mechanism of a motorcycle for superb off-road ability. Power was provided by a 36hp 1,478cc 4-cylinder engine that could reach speeds of up to 70Km/h, which would allow towing of loads up to 4.5 tons. The Luftwaffe used it to tow aircraft and carry bombs among other jobs.
