LONG LIVE THE

REPUBLIC! Rene van der Hart proves that Tamiya's 1:48 Republic P-47D Thunderbolt is a piece of out-of-the-box perfection!

T

he P-47 Thunderbolt was the brainchild of Republic's designer Alexander Kartveli and was to be the successor to the Severski P-35. The P-47 entered service in Europe in late 1942 and became, until the arrival of the P-51 Mustang, the most important fighter and escort plane in the USAAF. Later in the war,

when air superiority over the German Luftwaffe was achieved, the Thunderbolts were used in the ground attack role as well, destroying ground targets at will. Tamiya's 1:48 offering from 2003 is simply a beauty! The overall fit is near perfect and the detailing is more than adequate for this scale. The

recessed panel lines are fine and sharp, as are the rivets on wings and fuselage. There are several optional parts in this kit like four types of propellers, open or closed cowling flaps, a choice of bombs, rockets and three types of fuel tank. Also, the flaps can be posed in the lowered position and there's a choice of two decal options.

Detail painting was brush-painted and all surfaces then given colour-washes to enhance the detail

U

Amazing to think this detail (minus harnesses) is box-stock? Not really, it’s a Tamiya kit!

Painting the engine was mostly achieved with Vallejo acrylics, followed by dark colour-washes to make all the cylinder cooling-fins stand out. Using a small brush, the bolt-heads were touched in with bright silver to make them really pop out. Note the grey-coloured gearbox

THE OFFICE V IN The detailing of the cockpit

is almost on par with aftermarket resin sets and very sharp. Only a set of photo-etch seatbelts from the spares box were added to the cockpit. All parts were painted with Mr Hobby Aqueous (acrylics) interior green over an Alclad 2 black primer. The black, aluminium and red details were all brush-painted. The instrument panel was painted black and airbrushed with a thin layer of gloss coat. The kit decal was used for the instruments. With a few brush strokes of Daco setting solution, the decal formed perfectly over all the raised details and all the printed instruments lined up perfectly with the raised instrument bezels on the panel. All parts were glued together with a few drops of liquid cements and when dry, the whole assembly was glued into one half of the fuselage. As mentioned before; the fit was perfect. Painting the engine was mostly done with Vallejo paints, followed by a dark colour-wash to make all the cooling ribs stand out on the cylinders. With a small brush all the bolt-heads were painted bright silver to make them really pop out. Unfortunately, not much of the engine will be visible after it is mounted in the cowling and the propeller is in place. After the cockpit was installed, the fuselage could be closed-up and the wings and the horizontal stabilisers glued on. The tail fin is a separate part, probably for the common use of most other parts in the Razorback kit. Only tiny amounts of filler were necessary on the nose and the back. Just some light sanding was enough to completely remove any traces of glue or seam-lines. The cowling is a nice one piece moulding, with just the cowling flaps needing fitting before installing the engine.

PAINTING THE AIRFRAME

I don't like the look of highly polished finish seen on some warbirds but rather see an operational aircraft. To achieve this look, a black primer with micro-filler from Alclad was used instead of a gloss base-coat. The

10

The completed cockpit tub looks tiny when installed in the Thunderbolt’s vasy fuselage half! Wings, tailplane and dorsal insert are ready to be brought together

Alclad 2 black primer was applied, in readiness for the final metallic shades

The assembled airframe was checked thoroughly for flaws, before priming To avoid a bright, silvery finish, the author chose toned-down shades from the Alclad 2 range

After a protective layer of varnish had been applied, masking tape was used to create the invasion stripes

The white stripes are on, now it’s time to remask for the black portions of the aerial identity markings

The Allied ID stripes are on and look excellent. These need not be immaculately applied; they weren’t done neatly in reality

03/08/2018 16:53

The ‘salt technique’ was used to create a worn look on the stripes, described in the main text

first overall colour used was Polished Aluminium, followed by a coat of Aquagloss. This coat would prevent damage to the metal paint for the next stage: masking panels for painting. I used several other shades of aluminium, like 'Aluminium', 'White Aluminium', 'Airframe Aluminium' and 'Dark Aluminium', all from the Alclad 2 range. I choose colours that were close in shade because I wanted to create a subtle variety in metal shades. According to the instructions there were no invasion stripes on this particular aircraft, but on the internet I found some photos of aircraft with stripes from the same squadron. I wanted to give this plane a well used appearance and decided to simulate chipped off paint with the so called 'salt technique'. First the wings and fuselage were masked with tape where the white stripes would come. With a small brush water was brushed in places where I wanted the paint to be chipped off and fine salt was sprinkled on the wet spots. The salt will stick to the surface of the model enough not to be blown of during airbrushing the paint on. After the paint is dry, the salt can be brushed off with a toothbrush. This method realistically simulates the effect of damaged paint, exposing the underlaying metal finish. This process is repeated for the black stripes. After the paint was dry, another gloss-coat was airbrushed on to protect the paint for the next step: a colour-wash. Most people will apply a wash to the model after the decals are in place but I prefer to do it the other way around. The edges of the decal film can

U

The olive-drab anti-dazzle strip was masked off and sprayed, noting that it stopped at the cowling flaps

The creative use of multiple metallic paints can be seen in the subtly varied finish of the airframe

The checkerboard decal for the cowling confirmed perfectly to the moulding

Taking off from rough airstrips created plenty of dirt build-up on the undercarriage of P-47s and this was reflected in the model’s weathering

The kit comes with bombs, which have their own data decals. The wing flaps were painted and weathered individually for ease of access

V sometimes become visible

after a 'wash is applied, so applying the decals after the 'wash reduces the risk of this happening. If necessary, a 'wash can be brushed on the decals with brush afterwards and wiped clean with a cotton swab. I used a neutral grey colour-wash from AK Interactive, which is just dark enough to make the panel lines just a bit

more visible and add some light weathering all over the surface. I expected the checker decals on the cowling to be a challenge to apply but that couldn't be further from the truth. The fit is nothing short of amazing and the decals only needed a bit of setting solution to form around the edges of the cowling and sink into the panel lines. Only parts left to be painted

and installed were the flaps, landing gear and propeller to finish off this build. Usually I like a challenge in a build, and there is none in this kit, but still, I really enjoyed this build because I was so amazed with the fit and engineering quality of this kit. It's almost the perfect out-of-the-box project! I highly recommended kit for all level of modellers. ●

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AVIATION TAMIYA 1:48 BF 109F-2 WEEKEND EDITION ● KIT NO.84147

STAND AND DELIVER! James Hatch builds Eduard’s 1:48 Bf 109F-2 Weekend Edition kit and mounts it on the finely detailed Das Werk workshop stands

T

here’s probably not much to say about the Messerschmitt Bf109 that hasn’t been said already. Easily one of the most iconic and recognizable of all WWII fighters, it was produced in greater numbers than any other fighter during the war. At the time of its introduction in 1935 it was equipped with many modern features including all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, retractable landing gear and was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted V-12 engine. Many

14

of its contemporaries were open cockpit biplanes with fixed landing gear. Making its combat debut in the Spanish Civil War it would prove superior to its opposition and its pilots would develop tactics and gain experience that would serve the Luftwaffe well in the coming World War. The Jagdwaffe would prove to be master of the skies when Hitler unleashed his Blitzkrieg on Europe and the Bf109 was usually in the forefront of the action. The RAF shattered

any illusions of Luftwaffe invincibility during the Battle of Britain, but many pilots came away as seasoned veterans and would put their experience to use when Hitler’s eyes turned East. Bf109s, sporting their unit heraldry, bright identification markings and Luftsieg on their rudders ruled the skies and pilots began to accumulate victory totals that were previously unheard of. Although it was constantly being updated, the 109's mastery of the skies began

to slip away. Called upon to do things it was never designed for, manoeuvrability began to suffer due to ever increasing demands for heavier armament and more speed. It continued to soldier on though and where the Wehrmacht went, so went the Bf109, from the deserts of North Africa to the Arctic Circle and of course defending the skies of the Reich from ever increasing Allied bomber formations that were bent on bringing Germany’s industrial complex to its knees.

As this is a no-frills build, the standard kit cockpit was built up without any PE details. The author added a colour PE instrument panel and a set of seatbelts later, as only a decal option is provided for the latter in the Weekend release

THE KIT(S)

My weapon of choice for this article is Eduard’s 1:48 Bf109F-2 Weekend Edition kit. Unlike the old days, these now come with a choice of two schemes. I will be building a machine from 7./JG 54, Soviet Union, summer 1941 for this project and adding a

To fit the kit exhausts, the author needed to trim a Painting started with a few light coats of Mr Hobby little from each end as the fit was way too tight and RLM66. At this stage, the author also painted the caused the part to bend blank instrument panel and bulkhead to the rear of the pilot’s head

set of fabric seatbelts from the same company. Now, I wanted a slight twist with the finished work, but still utilising the kit in a more or less OOB format. My answer came when I was sent Das Werk’s superb 1:48 Luftwaffe Jack Stand Set with Saw Horses set.

The brainchild of Uschi van der Rosten, in cooperation with MBK Distribution, this natty little set will provide me with the ability to pose the Bf109 on jacks, with the undercarriage partially retracted. The set is also an injection plastic kit,

so no pesky resin to deal with here. Das Werk’s kit is packed into a quite large box and contains four sprues for both the wooden Saw Horses and the metal jack stands, with a period-looking instruction sheet insert. Time to start assembly. Horrido!

With the cockpit painted and sealed, the seatbelts were installed with a touch of thin CA

Masking tape rudder pedal straps have been added and internal details picked out with Vallejo paints. Some kit decals are provided for the side wall details, and the author added some placards from Airscale

V COCKPIT Every good story begins with

a trip to the office and this is no different. As this model will be OOB, all that I need to do before laying down the interior RLM66 paint is to attach the small number of sidewall fittings such as the oxygen regulator, pouch, fuse and switch panel etc. The cockpit tub itself is simplicity itself, with a forward bulkhead attaching to the main tub, plus gun breech cover, rudder pedals, trim wheel unit, control stick and two-part seat. A clear fuel line is also a part of construction and will mostly be painted in RLM04 Yellow,

over a white base coat. Tamiya’s new Quick Setting extra thin cement is used for everything due its super-fast grab time. I was certainly more than happy enough to tackle the cockpit without any resin parts as it’s more than a fair representation, with plenty of detail.

FUSELAGE AND TAILPLANE ASSEMBLY

Eduard has chosen to mould the fuselage MG troughs separate to the fuselage halves, so these needed to be inserted into the interior of each half and allowed to set. I also took the opportunity to assemble the tail wheel

fork and wheel. Care is needed here as the wheel will rotate and I found it easier to paint later. I did find that I needed to trim a little from the exhaust part length as they wouldn’t easily fit within the recesses inside the fuselage halves. After trimming, these were cemented in place. Closing the fuselage is very easy; first the cockpit tub and instrument panel were glued into position and then the halves were brought together. No gaps or problems were encountered.

WING AND MAIN ASSEMBLY

Eduard has chosen a three-part solution to the internal oleo strut channel and wheel well and these actually fit very well and with no issues. As I would paint the wells after the main scheme was applied, I could now glue these parts into position and close up the wing. Yes, it really is that simple! With both upper

Wing assembly starts with fitting the main gear wells, comprising three parts each

Ironically, the belly and spine seams need to be scribed along to replicate the panel line where the skin seams meet. A rivet tool was also used to add any lost details

Talk about speed-build! The wing is closed up already, pending addition of ailerons and flaps etc

03/08/2018 12:13

With the main airframe complete, the canopy was masked off and RLM66 was airbrushed over the frames The author then airbrushed RLM76 over the undersides of the model, extending high up the fuselage sides

Once the main wing seams have been removed, the author can fit the leading-edge slats, ailerons and outboard flap parts. No adjustment with anything here and all fits perfectly

wing panels in place and taped up, this was set aside to dry before the minimal seams are dusted away with a sanding sponge and buffed with a polishing stick. Now I could fix the ailerons and centre flap, as well as the leading-edge slats. Again, zero drama to be had here. The same applied to the fitting of the underside radiators.

PAINTING, DECALLING AND COLOUR-WASHING

Love the technique or loathe it, pre-shading was my first step. This was done with flat black paint, using heavy lines for the main panels and fainter ones for main rivet lines etc. A great proportion of this model now received a coat of RLM76 which extended up the fuselage sides quite a way. In fact, no mottle will obscure this and the demarcation is pretty sharp between the underside colour and the camouflage. As a result, no Blu-Tack was needed at all for this, with all masking being done with Tesa tape and Tamiya’s flexible masking tape. A soft pencil was now used to mark the camouflage demarcation and then RLM75 Grey was airbrushed into the appropriate portions with a minimal overspray. Once cured, Tesa tape was used to mark the camouflage and infill the RLM75 areas. Now, RLM74 was airbrushed into the open areas. Once cured, the model was unmasked. For this scheme, I needed to add a yellow fuselage band and lower wingtips. These were quickly masked off and Tamiya Flat White was thinly airbrushed over those areas in preparation for the yellow. The RLM04 Yellow simply wouldn’t have been opaque enough

U

Before decalling, a protective coat of Klear was first applied

A soft pencil was used to mark the camo demarcation and then RLM75 was applied to the model in those specific regions. After masking, RLM74 was then airbrushed into the unmasked voids

Closing the “ fuselage is very easy No gaps or problems were encountered...

AK’s Dark Brown wash was applied to the upper camo surfaces and Neutral Grey to the lower RLM76 surfaces. When dry, a cotton bud was used to remove the excess and blend in any residues

V to tackle this alone, hence

the white base-coat Now, that colour can be applied in thin coats until the correct density is achieved. Going back to RLM74 and RLM75, the rudder is now painted, and also a slightly rough edge just below the hood area. A small number of areas were now masked off and RLM02 airbrushed into them. These include the area under the slats and dropped middle flaps, split flaps and wheel wells. Scheme applied, the whole model is put under a coat of protective Klear, pending the decalling process. Two sheets of decals are provided with this release. One of these carries the national markings and

insignia for two aircraft and the other is a specific '109F stencil sheet, with numerous options for the various markings. I started by applying the main markings, using Mr Mark Setter to fix them. Stencilling took a little longer, with the entire process swallowing up about four hours.

THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT LAST BITS

There’s not really much more to this model except for the spinner and main gear struts/assemblies. The spinner on this scheme is unusual in that the forward section is 2/3 white and 1/3 black. The main portion and propeller are all in RLM70. When painted, the spinner

If you’ve never heard of Das Werk, then this will be a nice little introduction for you. As far as we're aware, this is the first release of its kind

You’ll not really see much of the main gear as they’ll be semi-retracted. The propeller has an interesting finish with black/white forward section and an RLM70 for the largest portion

was glossed with Klear and the VDM logos applied. The undercarriage was assembled and the gear doors airbrushed in RLM76. RLM02 was sprayed around the interior areas and a colour-wash applied. Mr Metal Color Aluminium was then brush-painted onto the compression strut. Gunze Tire Black was airbrushed over the wheels and RLM66 over the multipart hubs. These were all then assembled and the sockets modified with a scalpel so that they will hang at different heights when attached to the wing. This is hit and miss, totally, and

The Luftwaffe Jack Stand set comprises enough parts to build several jacks of two different heights and wooden workshop stands

some test-fitting is required along the way. I used CA gel to fit these and adjust them as I saw fit, which means they need to be at different positions, as is seen on retracting undercarriage gear. Uschi van der Rosten’s rigging cord was now used to add the aerial line and CA was used to fix it in situ.

Simple yet effective. These can be modified, as they were in the field, to cater to all types of Luftwaffe aircraft. The author airbrushed these in RLM02 and applied a dark brown colour-wash, plus black wheels. Note the modification to the rearmost one, to allow the rear fuselage to be held up

Please note, we have omitted the swastika emblems on this model to comply with laws in certain countries where Tamiya Model Magazine is sold

ALL JACKED UP!

For those of you not in the know, Das Werk is a collaboration between Uschi van der Rosten and Modellbau-König’s MBK Distribution. Their releases are few at the moment, and this is their first venture into original new-tool injection plastics. I bet you never realised that you needed some 1:48 Luftwaffe jacks and stands! Well, now you do know, the possibilities for dioramas are endless, and I have built three of their jacks for this project. Assembly is straight-

forward, and the jacks can be modified (as they were in the field) to support aircraft in any number of ways. I modified one so that it would hold the bar that fits through the hole in the 109’s rear fuselage. This is a simple mod of shortening the ram and adding a length of shaped and drilled plastic card, plus a length of Albion Alloys’ brass tube. After assembly, the jacks were airbrushed in RLM02 and given a dark brown colour-wash. The rams were hand-painted in Mr Metal Color Aluminium,

as was the supporting tube and modification. After mounting the propeller and fitting the stands with a mix of thin CA and Tamiya Cement, the project was complete. She is a little less stable that normal, sitting on the jacks, but it certainly creates something that’s a little different. I hope you like her! My sincere thanks to Eduard for the kit and seatbelts and to Alex and Harald of Das Werk for the Luftwaffe Jacks and Stands sets. Go guys! ●

uilding the Fujimi McLaren MP4/12C Boutsen-Ginion 2013 24 Hours of Spa a few years ago, I received a message from RacingDecals43, asking if I wanted to build the using their decals. I couldn’t resist, because I saw this car race at the Total 24 Hours of Spa in 2013 and as I try to build only Belgian teams with Belgian drivers, this was perfect for me. This team was founded by Thierry Boutsen and his brother in law Oliver Lainé. His sister Olivia is the team principal and is a very nice lady and a great help during this build. For this project I used the Fujimi 1:24 McLaren MP4/12C from 2013 and a photo-etched set from Studio27. First of all I started to remove the moulded-in mesh from the body with a Dremel tool and the back of a X-Acto knife. There were only four to remove and was easily done. You don’t have to remove them; you can easily paint them black and nobody will notice, but this is not how I work, so I removed them and sanded the edges smooth. I also noticed the side mirrors were very difficult to attach when finished, so drilled a small hole in the mirror arms and body and glued in a small 0.5mm brass pin so it would be easier to attach them after. The body was very crisp and had almost no mould lines or flash, so after a quick sanding of the body parts I gave them a good wash with some soapy water and left them to dry.

INTERIOR V THE The cabin had some issues;

all the electronic boxes were moulded-in which made it almost impossible to paint them and put in some extra detail. So I removed this part of the cockpit and replaced it with some plastic card, then made the electronic boxes from scratch with more plastic card. Before I started to paint them, I made my own carbon-fibre templates. After a good wash with soapy water it was time to cover the parts with Tamiya grey primer. I then painted the parts with semi-gloss and gloss black from Motip and left it all to dry overnight. The rollcage was painted with Alclad 2 Dull Aluminium and once cured, I used some heat-shrink tubing from Top Studio to replicate the rubber buffers in the rollcage, which were attached with some fine black wire. The cockpit itself got a full carbon-fibre decal interior, using materials from Scale Production. The moulded-in engine was hand-painted with Vallejo aluminium and the fuel pipes were made from fine solder-wire and teflon, hand-painted with Tamiya Enamel Aluminium. The floor was also painted with Motip semi-gloss black and was treated to some carbon-fibre decal on the splitter and diffuser. The seat was painted with semi-gloss black and masked of at the back for a scale fabric treatment. I fitted seat-belts material from Scale Production. The dash was also painted semi-gloss black, masked off and again scale fabric from Tenco Proto applied. The switches on the dash were drilled out and replaced with some home-made toggle switches. Everything went together like dream, with no fit-issues when completing the interior whatsoever.

Templates were created for the carbon-fibre decalled zones of the car The body parts are seen here taped together to check the fit

The McLaren MP4/12C has front and rear diffusers and these structures are always complex in shape. Carbon-fibre decal sheet was cut to cover all areas and the end result is spectacular

THE BODY

After drying from its bath, it was time to paint the air intakes at the front of the wheel arches gloss white from Motip. When dry, I masked off the areas that would remain white and painted the rest of the body

with gloss black from Motip, which was decanted and sprayed via airbrush. There were two parts that needed to be painted orange, so I made a mix from Zero Paints Jägermeister and Repsol Orange in a 1:1 ratio to match the decals. After painting was complete and a slight polish given, I could start applying the decals. I began with the carbon-fibre accents on the windows, mirrors and rear air vents which took two night to complete. Following this, I began the application of the RacingDecal43 decals, which were a dream to apply, but it took me another four days to achieve. First I started with the larger decals and finished of with the small ones. After a quick clean and a few days of drying I applied two coats of 2K clear from Zero Paints and left it dry for a week. When fully cured, I sanded the body smooth with some 2000-grit sand paper to remove a little orange peel and some dust particles. I gave it a good wash again and left it to dry. When dry I gave it one more coat of 2K clear from Zero Paints, but used 50% thinners instead of 25%. The finish was excellent and I didn’t need to polish any more. I let it dry for another week and started

FINAL ASSEMBLY

The finishing steps were not difficult, because this model has an almost a perfect fit. I fixed the grills with some two-part epoxy glue and left it to dry. The clear parts and front lights were installed, after which I married the body to the finished chassis, again using epoxy resin adhesive. After this had dried, I fitted in the antenna and some other small PE parts such as fuel caps, bonnet fasteners and the tow hooks and called this model 'done'.

THOUGHTS

This is one of the best kits that Fujimi has ever made and I loved building it so much that I built another one a few months later. The fitting of the body to the chassis is excellent, with no issues. The only criticism I'd make were the moulded-in interior and engine and the windows. The windows where not easy installation, but with some help from a knife they did go in. I finished this kit some years ago, but it’s still my favourite model. The GT3 kits from Fujimi are excellent, virtually Tamiya quality. I have built them all and although it’s sometimes a bit of a challenge, it is possible to create an amazing model. I’m pretty proud of the result and got awarded with a gold medal at a model show here in Belgium, which was my first in the Masters category; such a proud moment for me. ●

fter 1943, the lack of protection of the armoured units by the Luftwaffe became evident. The Allied air units operated without opposition in the skies of Europe, so several anti-aircraft vehicle projects were launched using trucks and halftracks. Later, it was thought that to protect the Panzer divisions, vehicles were needed capable of accompanying the tanks to combat, forcing the new anti-aircraft units to be properly armoured and with the same all-terrain

capability as the tanks. From the beginning, the Panzer IV would make an excellent anti-aircraft platform. It was initially thought that a closed turret that would accommodate the gun, but later it was found that the weapon remain independent of the protection so as not to slow it down its traverse and elevation, resulting in the Mรถbelwagen. In spite of this, Alkett maintained its initial idea which later gave rise to the Wirbelwind and the Ostwind designs.

This vehicle can be seen on all fronts in armoured divisions and battalions of heavy tanks, from Normandy to the Ardennes (ausf H and J) and of course on the eastern front. Occasionally, they were used in combat against infantry or light armoured units, so in some examples a cut can be seen in the frontal armoured plate to maintain some protection of the crew. By the end of 1944 there had been less than 300 units that, although giving a good operating result, stopped being manufactured in favour of the better protected Wirbelwind and Ostwind.

THE KIT

The Tamiya model (35237) despite dating back to 1999, is still a highly recommended model that just needs a few improvements to bring it a little closer to reality. I used a detail set from Voyager Model (PE 35569) which is very complete, including excellent aluminium and brass barrels, as well as various details in resin and copper wire. To be able to include some extra ammunition boxes I also used the Voyager Model ammunition and box set (VBS 0319), highly recommended for the level of detailing possibilities. To further improve the model, I decided to use the specific mudguards from Voyager Model (35565) that even includes the springs that hold the mud flap sections, but the front ones are too thick so I made them by hand. I used the Trumpeter tracks which depicts the final type with hollow guide teeth, very common on the MĂśbelwagen but rare on other Panzer IVs.

ASSEMBLY

The least impressive part of the kit is the floor of the fighting compartment, which is quite basic and in places, incorrect, so I replaced it completely. Being moulded in with the rest of the superstructure, the floor is difficult to access to make changes. I wanted to show one of the internal hatches that give access the battery in the open position and to make this work, I would

30

The author glued a sheet of sandpaper on a flat piece of glass and with circular movements, eliminated the remains of the original floor

need to remake to whole thing from plastic card. After detailing the floor and the rest of the fighting compartment, I detailed-up the battery box, painted the interior and masked it off. Once in place, I reinforced the plastic card floor on the undersurface because it is very thin and could deform. The base of the flak gun, after cutting it from the old floor, was tidied up and refined by grinding away the remaining plastic with thick sandpaper mounted on a piece of glass and making circular movements. The next important modification was the elimination of the original fenders, which would be later replaced by the Voyager PE parts. Now, I could make the main parts of the PE mudguards by soldering them together from the inside, preserving the fine detail on the visible areas. I would later fix these sub-assemblies with epoxy glue for a solid bond. I then turned my attention to the flak gun, detailing it up with PE parts. I left the shield unglued until everything had been completely painted. Provisionally, I left the aluminium barrel unattached so that it was convenient to paint it separately and I detailed-up the gunsight and its mount. I replaced part C23 with a section of hypodermic needle and copper wire, making a new rear support with a 1.2mm plastic tube. The assembly of the undercarriage would not prove a problem, leaving all the wheels without gluing to make their painting easier. As the tracks are made of plastic, I assembled

After removing the floor, the author clad the inside walls with 0.25mm plastic card and added some support tabs so that the new floor would sit perfectly

The new floor is composed of two almost identical pieces, both in 0.25mm plastic card. The lower one has some reinforcements on one side that fit with the lower chassis and on the other give strength to the whole structure

On the upper part, the author drew the position of the base of the gun and made some notches for the new details so that later, he would have a perfect fit for the small tops of the ammunition boxes

The new floor in its place, ready to detail up

After painting the interiors of the open doors and masking them off, the author could mate the base with the superstructure and the PE fenders

the vehicle so that I could disassemble the sections for a comfortable painting process, which I would do next, including the front and rear of the chassis. When I had finished painting and assembling the roadwheels and tracks, I proceeded to mask off the entire area. I did it this way, because in the large masked-off area forms a 'handle' which allows the model to be manhandled during painting/finishing. Now I could begin to thoroughly detail the rest of the model, also masking off the fighting compartment which had already been painted. It is noteworthy that the exhaust pipe I chose is unique in this vehicle, having a tube that directs the exhaust downwards, expelling fumes away from the exposed upper deck.

Above left; The wheels, tracks and chassis were painted before even detailing the outside of the vehicle, which proved to be very useful, because once masking is on, it provided a large area to manipulate the model without fear of damaging anything. Also this area is very convenient to test the airbrush before moving onto the model's surfaces. Above right; The gun is seen here painted and ready to be fitted; note the ready-rounds in their rack

V

I also emphasised the work done to the small doors that allow the side plates to be opened to combat position with the panels at 45º. Tamiya tells us to place these parts (E27, E28, E29

and 30) in open or closed positions and I wanted to have the option to have them fully operational. The Voyager photo-etched set wasn't much help because it is very difficult to fold

the brass so that on one side it is as perfect as possible, and on the other it is perfectly mobile. I decided to make these parts with strips of annealed aluminium printing plate, small sections of hypodermic needle of 0.80mm diameter and sections of old broken steel bits, all fixed with two-part epoxy glue. Once the exterior detailing process was finished, I could dedicate myself to the final painting process.

ACCESSORIES

It is important that our model has its own personality and contributes a story to our model, so we have to plan this work. Thanks to Voyager's PE set of ammunition boxes I had a good number of elements

that, through creative painting and weathering, would represent different colours and textures. The helmets of the crew also adds differing finishes. The metal box with wooden lid also provides chromatic richness, and finally, the mattress will provide a very defined and colourful element that will bring personality to our model. ●

KIT PREVIEW AMATI 1:50 VIKING LONGSHIP DRAKKAR ● KIT NO.1406/01

James Hatch inspects Amati's 1:50 kit of the Viking longship 'Drakkar'

MY KINGDOM FOR A NORSE! THE KIT

This isn’t a new kit, and in fact I know this was once released under the name Oseberg Viking Ship, again by Amati, some years ago. I know there to have been at least two boxings of this over the years. In fact, some vendors still have it listed as this, or may even carry that older kit in stock. I’m unsure as to when the kit changed its name to the current Drakkar title. The kit itself comes in a high quality, glossy box, carrying a colour image of the profile of the vessel on the lid, and accompanying small detail photo. It can be seen on

the lid that the 1:50 scale equates to 44cm length. There is surprisingly little timber by the way of sheets than you might expect due to the way Amati has approached the design. A plywood sheet contain the keel which incorporates the curved bow and stern, plus also the nine bulkheads that are notched to match their respective positions on the keel. As you see, the construction is quite traditional in this respect, and the shallow draught of the ship is the reason for a relatively low number of ply sheets.

Detail plans (included) are essential during assembly

Laser-cut wooden sheet is employed extensively throughout the kit, for the larger parts such as bulkheads and also for the hull planking

Various gauges of wooden strip are also supplied

Bobbins of twine are provided to rig the sail

A bag of brass pins for planking the hull, which require a drilled pilot hole before hammering home

Now, whilst there is of course some strip stock in this kit, the ship’s planking isn’t associated with this. Instead of what would be a rather complicated method of planking, this particular model is provided with two sheets of thin, laser-cut planks which are perfectly shaped to follow the contours of the hull, and also sit within the stepped recesses of the bulkheads. Also presented in plywood is the main deck, in two large main pieces, and three small sections. Strip wood stock is included for the deck planking, and dowel for the mast and oars. Timber quality is excellent, with tape holding together the various bundles. A smaller piece of walnut sheet is also included, and this contains parts for the rudder paddle, oar storage frames, rigging blocks, belaying posts and bases etc. Laser-cutting quality is nice and fine with only minimal timber to snip through to release each part. For protection, all timber sheets are placed in a thick, clear sleeve, as are the instructions manual and plans.

FITTINGS

Sitting on top of the timber sheet is a vac-form plastic box with a removable clear lid. The box has six compartments holding a few loose wooden pieces, rigging cord, as well as the metal fixtures and fittings for the Drakkar. A large bag of metal shields is included, with their respective bosses and timber details cast in situ. They have also been given an aged finish, but I would carefully paint these to make them look more realistic. A single anchor is provided in metal, utilising a wooden stock, and a small length of brass chain is provided for it. The other cast metal parts are for the ship’s dragon head (with separate horns and tongue) and a deck bucket (slop-out toilet?), longbow, axe etc. The casting here is very nice and when painted, should really look the part. A bag of brass nails is included, and these are well-formed and sharp, unlike some I’ve used over the years. You are best drilling a small pilot hole before applying these, so you don’t split any timber when you drive them through the hull planks and into the bulkheads. As well as two sizes of rigging cord

for standard and running rig, a piece of sailcloth is also included. You will need to make the sail yourself, including the diagonal strips that run at ninety-degrees to each other. You need to sew along the edges after folding them in, replicating the looping stitch that should be seen. One thing you’ll need to do is to buy some fabric paint for the sail stripes. Ageing the sail can be done with the age-old method of soaking in tea, should you wish.

A large bag of metal shields is included, with their bosses and timber details cast integrally

PLANS AND INSTRUCTIONS

Amati include an eight-page basic instruction manual for this model, guiding you through the principle steps of the model and explaining the various key areas of construction. Illustrations are in line drawing format and are clear to understand, despite the Italian text. A separate sheet with English annotation is also supplied for those of us who haven’t grasped the rudimentary elements of that beautiful language. Of course, a plan is also included for the model which describes things in greater detail, including the rigging stages. This is also typically easy to understand and also contains the shapes for a good number of kit parts, so if you were to mess up, then with a little extra timber, you can right your wrongs.

There’s even a cast metal bucket as a primitive toilet!

The anchor is provided in metal, plus a small length of brass chain

CONCLUSION

As I originally stated, this isn’t a new kit, but it is one that has stood the test of time and for me, still ranks as the best-looking Drakkar you can buy in kit form, and certainly the most authentic in appearance. I know some people don’t like the plywood planking, but as you shouldn’t need to thin the planks much (if at all), then this doesn’t feature as an issue for me. Some timber edges will need to have the charring from the laser cutting removed, but again, this isn’t a problem as far as I’m concerned. Amati has designed this kit to be relatively straightforward and they have succeeded. As far as price goes, it can vary, but I’ve seen in the UK/EU for around £90 to £100. I’ll start my own building log of this on Model Ship World very shortly. Highly recommended. ●

Other cast metal parts include the ship’s dragon head, with separate horns and tongue

The small quantity of loose wooden pieces are for the cleats. These just need a little final shaping before use

IRISH MODEL SOLDIER SOCIETY 60TH ANNIVERSARY DUBLIN SHOW

MODELLING IN THE Marcus Nicholls visits Ireland to report from the Irish Model Soldier Society's 60th anniversary show in Dublin

ublin is just a short Ryanair flight across the Irish sea from London and after a very generous invitation from the chaps at the IMSS, I was delighted to attend the sixtieth anniversary event. This year it took place in a conference room within the Hilton Dublin, a modern location with excellent facilities. As its name suggests, the Society began its life as with model figures at its core, but over the years, the tanks, trucks, aircraft, cars and more are seen at the annual show which is a healthy move, as it

38

brings in more model enthusiasts from Ireland, both the Republic and the North, plus the UK, Europe and even Russia. The overall quality of the models on show was impressively high as can be seen in the accompanying photographs and the show continues to establish its reputation as a welcoming, fun weekend that takes its competition seriously enough to set impressive standards. My thanks to John Schley, Gerry Doyle and all the other guys at the club for making me feel so welcome. Enjoy the photos and, slĂĄinte! â—?

www.icm.com.ua The boxart depicts this set of tank riders on a T-34-76 but they could almost certainly be adapted to fit other Soviet tanks of the era. All four wear the classic ushanka hat and three carry the PPsh-41 sub-machine gun with drum-magazine, the fourth figure being equipped with the PPS-43. The moulded detail is excellent and the poses look just right. 1:35 Soviet Tank Riders 1943-1945 (35640)

www.royalmodel.eu/en Royal Model continue to produce top-quality products after many years in business and the subjects are always original. Having said that, the first item here is Erwin Rommel in a trench-coat, with a telescope, a subject tackled many times over the years. But RM's is beautifully cast with very fine detail, certainly the best of the bunch. 'Tank Man Tiananmen 1989' is a highly evocative subject, depicting the young Chinese man who single-handedly obstructed a column of tanks in Tiananmen Square, Beijing during the civil unrest in '89. His identity is unsure – possibly nineteen-year-old student Wang Weilin – but his fate remains unknown. Much more prosaic but very handy is a modern 'wheelie bin' and solar powered street light, both perfect for current-era dioramas, or perhaps a zombie apocalypse scene.. All are impeccably cast in grey resin, with decals and other materials included where appropriate. 1:35 - Erwin Rommel (820) - Tank Man Tiananmen 1989 (823) - Garbage bin (809) - Solar powered street lamp (796)

STAR WARS ‘SOLO’ HAN’S SPEEDER www.revell.de SCALE: 1:28 MATERIALS: IM, SAS, EC ITEM NO.06769 As highlighted in this month’s ‘Editor’s Page’, Revell’s new kits from the Star Wars film ‘Solo’ are really rather good. Han’s Speeder is a very odd-looking but cool at the same time and has loads of detailing and weathering potential. It features glueless assembly but is moulded in normal kit plastic and can be painted and weathered in the conventional manner. The snap-fit parts can be modified to allow for test-fitting if additional detail has been added and also to make the painting process a little easier. The moulded-in detail really is excellent and even the young Han Solo figure is remarkably well done. Bring on more ships like this!

TEAM LOTUS 49B 1969 www.hobbyco.net www.hiroboy.com SCALE 1:20 MATERIALS; IM, PE, SVT, CP, WS ITEM NO.20005 The Lotus 49B from the 1969 Formula 1 season is famous for its outrageously tall rear wing and along with its huge rear tyres, plants the car firmly in this late ‘60s era. Japanese manufacturer Ebbro are masters of retro Formula 1 car models and this one is no exception, it’s an absolute masterpiece. Cars from this period of racing had skinny chassis and were ultra lightweight and these factors are reflected in the kit’s moulded parts; the suspension arms are in scale thickness as are those tall wing struts, so care will be needed during assembly and afterwards, when handling the model. The Ford DFV V8 engine has been perfected by Ebbro and is easily the best depiction of the iconic powerplant in 1:20. This is an exquisite, modern production of a classic Lotus that will look marvellous in one’s display case.

LANCIA DELTA HF INTEGRALE www.hobbyco.net www.hiroboy.com SCALE 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.3658 With miniature motorsport subjects, the sponsor’s markings and logos are absolutely key in getting the ‘look’ just right and with this re-issue of the iconic Lancia Delta HF Integrale rally car from the 1990 World Rally Championship season, Italeri have provided us with a gorgeous set of waterslide transfers for the Martini livery. They have a deep gloss finish, the metallic gold surrounding the Martini emblems is perfect and the whole sheet is finely in register. If only we could heap such praise on the kit itself. It dates from 1991 and it is, sadly, showing its age. The detail is rather ‘analogue’ and handmadelooking in the interior. There’s some flash in evidence too. Having said that, the driver’s door can be fitted open and the bodyshell appears to have an accurate outline.

Impeccable decal sheet, overall accuracy in shape Twenty-seven year old moulds are looking a little tired

FAIREY FIREFLY MK.I www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.05810 The British Fairey Firefly was a big brute of an aircraft serving on carriers during the Second World War in a fighter/anti-submarine role. The airframe’s size is immediately apparently when opening the box of Trumpeter’s new kit and one’s second impression is a rather sparse cockpit interior and somewhat basic main wheel-well liners. However, the restrained panel lines and recessed fasteners look excellent and let’s face it, it’s this exterior aspect of an aircraft model that we spend most time looking at. The big greenhouse rear canopy is very cleanly moulded although all sections are design to be fitted in the closed position. Overall, an impressive production with a few shortcomings that are bound to be addressed by aftermarket producers soon enough.

Nicely done exterior detail, great subject choice, good canopies The interior needs a little love from Eduard TMMI 275 September 2018

GERMAN MEDIUM TANK PANZER IV AUSF.E www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.3641 Zvezda’s all-new Panzer IV ausf.E snuck onto the model shop shelves (wooden and digital) with little fanfare, after all it’s the unglamorous ‘E’ in panzer grey without fancy schurzen or three-colour camouflage, but it mustn’t be ignored! It’s a very presentable production of this earlier variant that was deployed to the Soviet Union, North Africa and the Balkans. The hull comes as a three-sided tub to which bow and stern plates are affixed, this moulding method allowing finer detail to be reproduced than a one-piece component. Lower hull-side add-on armour is included and, thankfully, the suspension bogies come as one-part mouldings (it works for these) to which are added one extra part before cementing to the hull. The tracks are link-and-length with builtin, top-run sag. Overall, well engineered with excellent detail and nothing missing.

All new production with some nice detail touches and a well thought-out construction sequence Nothing to complain about here and at around £27 in the UK, it’s bargain of the month

STURMMÖRSER TIGER L/5.4/38CM STURMTIGER www.tigerhobbies.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.RM-5012 We’ve had to wait a little longer than usual for this kit to arrive, but now it’s here, it looks very nice indeed. Obviously, the kit makes use of existing Tiger I bits and pieces produced a couple of years ago by this young manufacturer and it’s safe to say that they are of extremely high quality. The new parts for the vast, boxy casemate and 38cm rocket projector match the older pieces perfectly and are packed, inside and out, with detail. From the roof down to the internal hull floor, back to the rear plate and forward to the bow plate, nothing has been left out; you’ll find a complete Maybach V8 engine plus all of its cooling system, a full driver’s station, radio gear, torsion bars, firewall, gearbox and more inside and that’s just the ‘tank’ part of the vehicle. The fighting compartment is crammed with ammo racks and their rounds and the huge launcher and its aiming controls. And incredible production.

Detailed fully inside and out, this is an extraordinary kit of an Tiger I oddity Definitely not a quick build!

BERGEPANTHER AUSF.A DEMAG www.pocketbond.co.uk www.tigerhobbies.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.2101 If you enjoy long-haul, fully detailed AFV models with interiors, these are great times for you. After a series of all-new Panther kits in 1:35, we now have not one but two new BergePanthers, the armoured recovery variant of this tank. Takom have used their phenomenal Panther Ausf.A kit for the basis of the Demag vehicle, its turret having been removed and the space where the turret basket would have hung filled by a huge winch. In the Ausf.D version, no winch is fitted, it being more of a turretless Panther tank with a circular cover the open aperture. Both models feature a full interior with engine, so even the simpler ‘D is no quick build. Detail is wonderful and you’ll have learnt a lot about the construction and mechanisms of the Panther by the time you’re done.

New BergePanthers were inevitable and now they’re here, they are magnificent creations What’s not to love? Even the price-point is not unreasonable

RODEN, UKRAINE

HOLT 75 ARTILLERY TRACTOR www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.812 The US-made Holt 75 started life as an agricultural tractor before the start of the ‘Great War’ but soon found itself hauling large Allied artillery pieces through the mud of the Western Front. Its quirky design lends itself well to model kit production, with Resicast (in resin) and now Roden offering kits in 1:35. Here we have Ukrainian manufacturer Roden’s model which is moulded from conventional grey polystyrene; no photo-etched parts, just plastic and decals, which is how lots of modellers like it. The parts are finely moulded on chunky sprues, with some very neat detail touches in evidence (the ‘Holt’ logo on the engine block, realistic corrugated roof panel) although there are some prominent mould part-lines in some areas. It’s a fabulous subject choice and with a little dedication, it will produce a fine replica of this WW1 gun tractor.

Wonderfully ‘old world’ looking subject, nice detailing all round Might need some modelling experience as it’s somewhat of a specialist kit TMMI 275 September 2018

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:35 RC WW1 BRITISH TANK MK.IV MALE ● KIT NO.58657

TAM IY

A'S L A

Tamiya's superb Mk.IV Male British WW1 tank now comes with an RC system for table-top battles

A

round 1,000 examples of the Mk.IV were produced starting in March 1917. The 'Male' variant was developed to smash through enemy lines and in addition to machine guns it utilized large six-pounder guns. The Mk.IV saw a variety of action, including a mass deployment of around 400 tanks at the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917. Tamiya's 1:35 Mk.IV Male British tank was a surprise release back in 2014 and a very welcome one too. The kit was beautifully rendered

52

with Tamiya's familiar detail and came with snap-together tracks that must rank as the easiest-to-assemble individual links that have ever been issued with a scale armour model. Anyone building this kit can't have failed to notice certain parts that offered partial mechanisation and indeed the model could be built with small electric motor for forward and reverse propulsion. Four years after the Mk.IV's release however, we are presented with a fully radio controlled version that

NDS HI comes with a transmitter, receiver/control module, twin motor/gearboxes and reduction gear to achieve something approaching scale speed. The model retains all the detail and accuracy from the original launch and those easy-build tracks are more than up to the job of driving the vehicle across a table top and even mild WW1 terrain, in 1:35 of course. Here are some technical specifications for the kit; • TTU-10 transmitter and TU-10 transmitter and MC-07 receiver/motor

T

he hull of Trumpeter's kit is cleanly formed without any moulding lines or defects. There is no waterline so it was very difficult to apply camouflage patterns and colours. I used a height gauge to ascertain its position for the weld line representation and subsequent painting. Referring to the Kagero booklet I was able to create the omitted parts by scratchbuilding them. The catapult mould was too thick for the scale and so was remade using plastic card. The aft deck (truss structure)

was also fabricated from scratch. The material used here was 0.2mm and 0.5mm plastic plate, brass wire and extra photo-etched parts. Templates were created in Adobe Illustrator and printed out to cut the plates to size. The inside of the boat hangar is over-simplified, so various intake ports and piping structures were installed and I also added plumbing to the ceiling of the hangar. The lifeboat cranes were enhanced to give them with a three-dimensional feel. The main cranes were all scratchbuilt and many other

parts were replaced with resin products from Veteran Models (www.starlingmodels.co.uk). The decals were designed by referring to the 'World of War' Graff Zeppelin drawings and then commissioned by a professional manufacturer. The camouflage pattern also refers to the World of Warship illustrations and the details refer to the Kagero 3D book. For further detail upgrades I used Infini products, but because they are meant for intermediate users, there were still a lot of details missing.

TIME V PAINTING The selection of the

camouflage scheme for the Graf Zeppelin is entirely the modeller's choice. This was my first German ship model and so I spent of lot of time researching, gathering a lot of information about the appropriate colours for a Kriegsmarine ship of this era. After painting the main surfaces, the black and white camouflage stripes were subjected to highlighting and shading. This was done by using masks to create a sense of distortion in the plates by the endlessly varying pressure of water on the hull. This is also referred to as the 'oil canning' effect. Assuming that the light is directed from the top and front, I proceeded with contrast painting. Mr Color 308 is recommended for the light grey colour in the instructions, but this didn't look right to me, so I chose Neutral Grey and Grey 306 (USAF F-16 etc) instead. For the contrast painting, I chose clear black. For the wooden flight-deck, airbrushing was performed using light browns without using colour-washes.

Pleas swas to co coun Maga

The kit comes with a small airforce of Bf109Ts, Ju87C Stukas and Fieseler Fi-167s and each was painted with the same care and attention of a 1:48 model, with rigging, aerial wires plus spinning and static propeller; the finished effect was well worth the effort

WEATHERING

Considering that Graf Zeppelin was never completed, I limited the weathering to light rusting without any extreme effects. After colour-wash, rust streaks were simulated with yellow, red, and black Tamiya Enamels.

The addition of the highly detailed airwing to the carrier decks brings the model to life

Mini Review... ROYAL MODELS 1:35 ‘ICE CREAM TIME’ (No.805) www.royalmodel.eu/en

p 54-58 Zepplin 275MN 56

Royal Model is a long-established and much-loved Italian brand that makes some characterful and evocative diorama sets and accessories and their latest is full of charisma. It depicts a young lad sitting atop a (hopefully) dud sea-mine enjoying an ice-cream and it’s beautifully executed, with sharply detailed resin parts and perfect casting. A lovely vignette or an addition to a larger diorama.

Please note, we have omitted the swastika emblems on this model to comply with laws in certain countries where Tamiya Model Magazine is sold

Rigging up a ship is quite an undertaking and cannot be rushed

The full-hull model looks fantastic, but this was soon to be buried within a seascape (overleaf) for an even more spectacular effect

Subtle airbrushing highlights the hull’s plating and other constructional elements

V AIR-WING

The detailing of the aircraft is sufficient, but the Stuka wing flaps are moulded as solid parts, so additional detail was applied using photo-etched parts and Infini rigging.

SEA BASE

The main shape of the ocean setting was made of isoprene, a building material. The big waves were cut with a knife over which was applied modelling putty. Smaller ripples were carved one by one using electric carving machine. The basic sea colour was painted cobalt blue, yellow and other deep blues. To form the lighter areas, the base colours were mixed with white. The foam was created by hand-painting by brush. The bow-wave part was formed from silicon. After all the paints had cured, the seascape was coated with gloss varnish. ●

FALLEN STARS 1, CRASHED, DAMAGED AND CAPTURED AIRCRAFT OF THE USAAF

TOM LAEMLEIN www.canfora.se Within the 128+ softback pages we are treated to some extraordinary and occasionally sad photographs (images of smashed-up B-17s are heartbreaking) depicting wrecked Mustangs, Thunderbolts, Warhawks, Airacobras, Lightnings, Flying Fortresses, Havocs, Liberators and more. Seeing these famous and magnificent fighters and bombers in such terrible conditions can be simultaneously shocking and fascinating; of course, there are some great ideas for modelling projects here.

PANZER III ON THE BATTLEFIELD, WORLD WAR TWO PHOTOBOOK SERIES VOL.14

TOM COCKLE, PEKO PUBLISHING www.panzerwrecks.com As far as modeller-friendly books go, Peko Publishing’s ‘World War Two Photobook Series’ is tough to beat; the images are reproduced full page width, offering the best chance to see the detail in the images and there’s a lot to see. This is the first part of the series on the Pz.III and as such, focuses on the earlier machines that fought in France during the 1940 Blitzkrieg, the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa and in the deserts of North Africa. With Tom Cockle as the author, the captions are never generic; instead we have detailed and informative descriptions of each tank, making the experience much more satisfying. An excellent look at this ubiquitous Wehrmacht tank.

PANZER III ON THE BATTLEFIELD 2, WORLD WAR TWO PHOTOBOOK SERIES VOL.18

TOM COCKLE, PEKO PUBLISHING www.panzerwrecks.com Following on the initial volume, this title takes a second look at the Panzer III; more in the sandy North African wastelands, loaded on railcars going east, wrecked in French villages and bogged down on the Russian Steppes. Alongside the close-ups of the armour, we are treated to some fascinating imagery of the crewmembers, working on the vehicles that also served as their mobile homes for months at a time. There are some perfect ideas here for dioramas and if you have even the slightest interest in WW2 German armour, this series is a must-have.

Modellers Sanders Our range of specially produced Ultimate Modellers Sanders provide an excellent abrasive solution for the discerning modeller. Uniquely shaped they are provided in several grits (100/180/220/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit). They are long lasting and washable, which will allow them to be used to their maximum potential with the minimum of waste. Thinny Sticks Our range of Thinny Stick Sanders have been developed specifically to help modellers get to those hard to sand areas on all genres of models. They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series NEW How to Build... TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A and F4U-1D CORSAIR When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic model kits. Each model since then has seen incremental improvements. Just when you think the series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves you wrong. Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every respect. Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included several new sprues and offered a wider range of camouflage and marking possibilities. Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit includes a significant number of brand new sprues to depict the unique attributes of this variant. We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown and accuracy. In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty of inspiration with two different configurations and colour schemes. We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s 1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk around of a Corsair under restoration.

The Editor’s Page... Revell’s new kits of the vehicles from ‘Solo’ are not to be underestimated

am really loving the new vehicles from the most recent Star Wars film 'Solo'. The design of them – Han's Speeder in particular – reminds me of Syd Mead's creations and to me, that is always a good thing. Revell's new kits are impressive little replicas; do not be put off by the models' snap-fit assembly and electronic sound and light packages, the plastic mouldings are very well detailed and the kits make ideal mini-projects for SW buffs to add more cabling, stuff in extra ‘gizmology’ and weather-up. To allow for proper test fitting, I would probably eliminate the friction-fit posts and pegs and rely instead on good old-fashioned model cement to hold the parts together. The figures are formed from semi-rigid plastic and are remarkably well done; just a little repainting and they are good to go. I am hoping to squeeze at least one of these models onto my workbench soon and apply some weathering. Watch this space!

SOLO PERFORMANCE

Editor's Choice

F-14A w/late wheels SIN64832 (includes cockpit, engine outlets, wheels) eduard.com creativemodels.co.uk I think I might have mentioned Eduard’s Brassin ‘Big Sin’ boxed-set for Tamiya’s 1:48 F-14A before, but as I am gearing up to building the new F-14D Tomcat, I thought I’d take another look at it, in the hope that a similar product for the ‘D will magically manifest itself soon. I am absolutely blown away by the detail on the resin castings; it is a significant improvement over the kit’s standard components, which are already fantastically well executed. These few images highlight Eduard’s achievements. I think you can see what I mean!
