With 3D printing becoming more and more accessible, it wasn’t long before companies sprung up offering to produce your 3D Models in extruded plastics. Shapeways are one company that Knight Customs have taken advantage of. Through the unique third party system James Knight of Knight Customs has made some amazing products available that convert many of the Tamiya RC buggies. One such item that caught our attention was the Navy Seal Desert Patrol Vehicle kit that converts the 1:10 Fast Attack Vehicle RC buggy into a highly realistic version that the US Navy Seals use, right. NEWS EXTRA: MODEL SHOW REPORT EURO MILITAIRE ‘14 FOLKESTONE UK

EURO MILITAIRE 2014

TMMI visits the famous Euro Militaire show in Folkestone, UK

O

nce again, the Kent coastal town of Folkestone played host to this well known event, the competition area of which features individual AFVs models (tanks, armoured cars), figures and dioramas in abundance. The venue's proximity to the Channel Tunnel makes it easy for European

6

visitors to visit, making it a very international event, a very welcome feature. The traders’ hall seemed reasonably healthy and while the bigger names (Accurate Armour, Resicast) are long gone from this event, the model dealers who were present seemed to be doing well. The exciting mix of three main

elements; world-class models in the competition area, the variety of vendors and the get-together of friends makes this event unmissable and well worth adding to the calender each year. Here’s a photo-compilation of some of the models that caught our eye, arranged in no particular order!

I

n this release, Eduard have re-boxed the older Kopro (KP) Su-25 model with the addition of photo-etch sets (one in colour), one set of canopy masks, and some resin parts such as a K-29 ejection seat, air scoops and flare dispensers for the tail fins. The detail on the injectionmoulded parts is on the soft side (especially on the wings) and re-scribing is something that you need to do if you want the colour-washes to work effectively. The plan was to do a straight out of the box build, focusing more on the external appearance and the weathering of the model.

COCKPIT

Construction began with the cockpit area and Eduard have provided a replacement of the instrument panel in the form of pre-coloured photo-etched part. For the sidewalls, Eduard doesn’t offer anything more than two pieces of plastic (already provided by KP) with basic detail and a couple of photo-etched pieces. When everything was cemented, the cockpit was painted with H-417 (light blue) and received some chipping with interior green using a sponge. After a coat of gloss coat (Future/Klear) a wash of dark brown oil was applied, followed by a light drybrushing after it was dry, to enhance the raised detail. For the ejection seat, a complete resin replacement is provided. The seat was

painted black and the belts were added from the Eduard PE set. The usual light grey drybrushing, gloss coat, colour-wash and flat coat steps were followed. The seat was fitted at the end of the build.

LANDING GEAR AND INTAKE

The landing gear and wells don't come with much detail. As it was an 'out-of-the-box' build it was decided not to add any detail as unless someone picks the model up to look, it's not obvious if there is any detail or not. The only addition was in the form of plastic sheets to close the gaps in the main gear wells and fuselage

AIRFRAME

The whole of the fuselage and wings were re-scribed and riveted as the detail is on the soft side and wouldn’t hold any colour-washes. Minor details such as panels and covers were added from thin plastic sheets as to enhance the detail. Everything that an SU-25 can carry was loaded on the bird. All the ammo comes from the kit although some modellers might prefer to replace it with resin parts from Eduard. Detail was added to the fuel tanks by representing the welds with thin stretched sprue. The only problem is that the sway braces on the pylons go in different places depending of which load they will be carrying.

U

Recessed rivet lines were enhanced with a microdrill.

Plastic beam was cemented to the sidewalls to support the cockpit tub.

The cockpit is in place, and correctly aligned thanks to the support rails.

Rear bulkhead aligns well with the fuselage spine.

A view into the installed cockpit, just showing the instrument panel.

The rocket launchers were initially undercoated with gloss black.

THE CAMOUFLAGE V PAINTING After all the major assemblies had been glued together, the aircraft was ready for painting, but not before a dash of filler and a light sanding. The model received two light coats of Tamiya XF-19 and any flaws were corrected at this stage. The airframe was pre-shading with Tamiya XF-2 Flat Black in order to give a bit of depth to the

panel lines. For the Iraqi camouflage, the following colours from the Gunze range were used; H-310 Brown (light), H-17 Brown (dark), H-337 Greyish Blue (for the undersides). All colours were lightened for scale-effect using a couple of drops of white, prior to application. After their initial airbrushing, each colour was then lightened further

The airframe was first undercoated with Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey.

with the application of more white, to create a more complex texture. The following day, two coats of Johnson’s Klear were airbrushed on the model in preparation for decals and weathering. With decaling complete, another coat of Klear was applied to protect the existing surface from the impending washes. The model received a thinned wash of black and brown oil mixed

together and finally, two coats of satin varnish. Humbrol 'sand' pigment was applied to the wheels/tyres and on the fuselage to give the model a more weathered look.

FINAL THOUGHTS

A highly recommended kit for someone that wants to have a SU-25 in his cabinet; my only suggestion would be to replace the armament with resin items. ●

Some light pre-shading was then applied, using Tamiya XF-2 Flat Black.

This set from Voyager is for the 1:35 kit of the Fennek armoured car by Trumpeter. It includes four photo-etched frets, each packed with detail for the vehicle’s exterior, as well as a new lathed-turned brass barrel for the .50cal Browning machine gun. Some experience with tiny brass parts will be needed here, but the results are potentially spectacular.

The three-colour camouflage has been applied using colours from the Gunze range; H-310, H-17 and H-337 for the undersides.

After an overall coat of Johnson’s Klear (gloss varnish) the decals were applied. Once fully dry, the markings were re-matted down with satin varnish.

MODELSPEC Although the main mouldings are a little long in thr tooth, the model comes together well and looks ‘right’.

KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:48 GERMAN 6X4 TOWING TRUCK KFZ.69 W/3.7CM PAK ● KIT NO.32580

The new rear ‘deck’ moulding for the crew and ammunition bins.

EARLY WAR GUN TRACTOR

Leather texture on the crew seats is outstanding.

Tamiya’s second 1:48 Krupp Protze kit depicts the artillery-tractor variant, complete with an all-new Pak 3.7cm gun and crew

B

ack in 2006, Tamiya released the standard troop-carrier version of the Krupp Protze truck, which featured the wood rear deck and crew seats. In this new kit, we find that the original rear structure has been replaced by the artillery prime mover deck, which consists of a back-to-back seating arrangement for four gunners, surrounded on all four corners by ammunition lockers. A vehicle like this needs an artillery piece to tow, and Tamiya obligingly provide a newly-tooled model of the 3.7cm Pak, which is exquisitely detailed. The trail legs of the gun can be assembled so they remain moveable, allowing it to be hitched to the truck or placed in the firing mode. The Pak is a lovely little thing and features an elevating/traversing barrel, a finely moulded gun shield and beautifully detailed wheels/tyres. There are some faint ejector pin marks on the reverse face of the shield but these can be scraped off with a curved blade – ideally a No.10 by Swann-Morton. Tamiya have done a fine job of the new seat pads, featuring a quilted pattern that’ll just need a creative application of paint to

bring to life. The underside of the truck has not been ignored; the suspension system is delicately rendered with individually moulded suspension elements, drive shafts and spring mouldings, all of which build up to create an excellent representation of the Protze’s underpinnings. The front wheels are not steerable but they can be angled if desired by very gently bending the stub-axles with a pair of modelling pliers. There’s a ton of fine detail on this small model, from the cabin control levers to the amazing rifle racks that sit over the towing point, making it an absorbing and highly enjoyable project. Markings are provided for two machines, one from the 293rd Tank Destroyer Battalion, 293rd Infantry Division, Belarus Summer 1941 and the other from 2nd Company, 44th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 1st Mountain Division, Ukraine June 1941. Both are in overall Panzergrau (XF-63) and each option provides number plates plus divisional and tactical insignia. A useful detail set for this kit is by Hauler in photo-etched brass (HLX48131), which includes

a replacement windscreen frame, cabin external fittings, foot pedals and more. www.hauler.cz ● MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:48 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Pak 3.7cm wheels/tyres are finely detailed.

Newly-tooled ammunition stowage boxes for the rear deck.

Bonnet and front wings are moulded as a single component. Pak 3.7cm gun shield is tiny and perfectly formed.

Suspension system is delicate and thoroughly detailed. 1:48 KAR.98 rifles are almost as refined as their 1:35 equivalents.

Markings for two machines are included on the decal sheet. Gun breech and rear barrel section of the Pak 3.7cm.

T

he fit of the new Airfix 1:72 scale Fw 190 F-8 is excellent. There is almost no need to use putty, and I just hate putty, as I am sure most modellers do. I only needed a little Gunze Mr. Surfacer to fill some joins. The excess was removed without sandpaper, instead using a cotton swab soaked in isopropyl alcohol. With the head start of a perfect fit, and considering that the model has very few parts, the model is ready for paint in a flash, which I think is great because painting is what I enjoy the most.

PAINTING

Before painting, I started with a primer coat of Mr. Finishing Surfacer dissolved with Mr. Leveling Thinner, delivering a very uniform and smooth finish, perfect for the acrylic paint to grip well. Next I pre-shaded the whole model with black paint. The lower surfaces were painted with a base of Tamiya XF-23 Light Blue diluted with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. This is a new method I learned from a Spanish master modeller, and gives a very smooth, even finish.

Underlying camouflage colours have been applied, complete with shading.

For the upper surfaces of the wings and fuselage, I applied the two-tone camouflage freehand, which I always do, but if you are not experienced to this degree with the airbrush it won’t be a problem because, with the winter camouflage on top, all failures will be covered! The mottled camouflage on the sides of the upper fuselage was also applied freehand. The two shades of grey are Gunze-Sangyo acrylic RLM 74 Grey Violet and RLM 75 Grey Violet, Gunze, thinned with Mr. Leveling Thinner.

Following a gloss coat, the decals have been applied.

All camouflage colours were highlighted by mixing the base colour with white paint to draw lights. Finally, with heavily diluted white paint (also with Mr. Leveling Thinner), I applied the thin white lines of the winter camouflage. For all this freehand painting, I used my wonderful airbrush Paasche H-1 with a #1 needle. I have been using it for decades, but not in vain, as I am finally starting to master it! The red ring of the nose was painted next, which I lightened with orange.

Over the camouflage and decals, the winter overspray was applied, by airbrush of course.

Aircraft are usually much filthier on their undersurfaces, so this area was given extra weathering attention.

Before and after decalling, all surfaces were varnished with Tamiya X-22 acrylic gloss. This allowed me to commence weathering with Tamiya’s panel line accent colour wash using a mix of black and brown. Smaller detail parts such as the propeller, landing gear, cockpit, pilot and others were painted with Vallejo acrylics. Perhaps the hardest part was painting the white spiral of the propeller hub,

because at this scale it is really tiny. I used Tamiya masking tape and airbrush for this delicate job. Finally I gave the model a coat of matt varnish with Marabu Mattlack. In summary, this is a beautiful model, easy to assemble and a delight to paint despite a difficult winter camouflage, and also cheap. Highly recommend, and I’m sure I'll build some more. I hope you enjoy it! ●

SIMCA SALAD! Tom Morgan adds a distinctively leafy camouflage scheme to Tamiya's small but perfectly formed Simca 5 in 1:35

I

have always appreciated interesting colour schemes: they were what first attracted me to World War I aircraft, and later to WW II German armour. So I keep a look out for unique camouflage patterns. A few years ago, I found a photo on the 'Axis History Forum' of a German staff car that had been

spray-painted using large leaves as masks. 'That’s cool' I thought, and moved on. In time I came across other examples - three more on that one forum alone. The most elaborate pattern, using maple leaves, was pictured in 'Panzerwrecks 9'. Much later I acquired some Plus Model paper leaves, as clutter for a SPG.

They are sold in several species, and in various colours. While toying with the little gems I remembered the staff car - maybe I could do that 'leaf thing'. I looked at some kits, such as the Mercedes Type 170V, but realized the cars were too big - I’d need hundreds of leaves. Then Tamiya’s Simca 5 appeared - a staff car, yet

tiny. Now I had a validated idea, ready-made masks, and a practical subject kit. All that was missing was information on the Simca 5 itself. I couldn’t get my hands on what little was available in print. But the 'Old Restorations - Simca 5, 6 & 8' internet forum provided a wealth of photos for analysis. However with

my mediocre French I was often unsure of exactly what make, model or year I was studying. Hopefully by the time this article appears someone will have published a comprehensive Simca reference correcting my misinterpretations.

CONSTRUCTION; EXTERIOR

The exterior work was largely cosmetic, and began by thinning the edges of the fenders. I swapped the kit mud flaps for more malleable .006" lead foil, and replaced the thick registration plates with .005" card and Grandt Line nuts. I fashioned a more delicate wind shield wiper from plastic scraps and filled the hood sockets with Master Club #62 nuts. I was saved the task of making a matching wiper, as photos of the car in German use often show the right one missing. The solid tail lights were cut off and new ones turned (on my hand tool) from clear sprue then coated in Tamiya Clear Red. The bonnet latches are amongst the kit’s few omissions. In photos these are often hidden by the large headlights. Mine are modified clamps from an Aber PE set. I 'sign' all my SPGs with a red primer drive sprocket. To tag the Simca, I chucked a wheel in my hand tool and ground off the hubcap. A new hub was fashioned from styrene rod and card, with Master Club #67 and Grandt Line #15 nuts. The wheel rims were drilled and air valves of .015" rod added. I filed a vertical bevel into the ends of the front axles so I could turn the wheels a little.

ROOF

I wanted the Simca to feature its cloth top closed. With no available aftermarket option, I would have to vacu-form one. But I was stuck on how to create a pattern. Then fate stepped in; while shaving the hubcap

from a wheel, I destroyed it. Another kit was purchased for the wheels, and so provided a spare body to sacrifice. The roof opening was filled in with styrene sheet, and four bowed struts of .015" brass wire CA’d in place. The five contoured fabric panels were built up with more card and Tamiya putty. The completed master was cut from the body. I intended to vacu-form the roof, but first I tried some Tamiya Epoxy Putty (Quick Type). By rolling it on waxed paper I needed very little talcum powder, and I easily got it down to about .005". I let it sit for an hour then draped it over the mould, smoothing it down with a soft brush. Although “quick”, the putty still took 24 hours to fully harden. It came off the master easily, and despite being so thin, it was cut and sanded to shape without mishap. The Simca’s cloth top was supported by 5 transverse struts - a square leading edge bar that clamped to the front of the roof, and 4 tubes - I used .015" rod. All the struts were supported bilaterally by pivoting arms, except the second one, which was free. The pivots are also .015" and as three of the pairs have identical elbows, I built a jig to shape them. Rods were pressed onto the jig and flooded with boiling water. They were cut to length, the ends crimped, and detailed with .005" discs. The pivots were glued in place after painting. The strapping at the front and back of the roof are .010" x .020" stock with .005" punched rivets. Since this build, Hauler has released a photo etch set for this kit which includes pivots.

Bonnet closure latches were added to the wing tops.

Framework for the soft-top was fabricated from white plastic rod.

INTERIOR

The kit’s spare tire has only one face, leaving a void on the interior. I filled this with a shaped disc,

contoured depression that actually supported the wheel. The ejector holes in the doors were filled with CA, and the latches detailed with styrene scrap. I also added lengths of .005" strip as the retraining elastics at the bottom of the door frames. I felt the windows were too thick, so I tried to replace them with four panes of .005" clear styrene. After hours of frustration, I humbly accepted Tamiya’s wisdom and used the kit parts. I secured them to the pre-painted frames with beads of dilute Micro Scale Kristal Klear, wiping away smudges with a Windex dampened brush. I did manage to add latches to the sliding front panels, with pieces of wire and discs of .003" aluminium sheet punched from a disposable pie plate. To re-work the controls, I began by shaving off the brake and clutch pedals moulded onto the floor and scratching new ones from rod, card, and Fotocut PE rings. The elongated gas pedal is scrap PE. I broke the shift stick, so I replaced it with .025" rod and turned a new knob. The steering column is .040" rod. It lacked the bracket connecting it to the bottom of the dash, so I

made one from plastic bits and Grandt Line nuts. The seats received a fair amount of attention. I added .010" rod 'piping' to the edges, and carved a 'butt print' into the driver’s seat. The top frame is annealed .8mm brass tube while the bottom frame is .030" styrene rod. Photos reveal two styles of forward folding seats; one hinged halfway along the bottom (on fancier models), and the other at the base of the back. Of the later, there were at least three types of hinge. I chose the simplest, fashioning it with .030" rod. The adjustment knobs are .015" brass wire built-up with thick CA, and turned in my hand tool. I extended the floor rails with .020" square stock, and staggered the seats. The dash board is crude by Tamiya standards. And I wasn’t sure about the third dial - the one on the far right. Simca produced several makes of car besides the “5”, plus small vans. And each was offered in different models. So even though I located some detailed photos of the instruments, it was often impossible to confirm their origin. Of those likely Simca 5’s, only the two dials within the embossed frame were present - oil pressure on the left, and speedometer/

odometer on the right. I thinned the dash’s bottom edge and removed the details, save for the central frame. New switches and knobs were made with PE washers, resin rivets and brass wire. The large central ignition switch (minus key) is a modified Bronco single wing nut. The two lateral clips are tiny pieces of .005" card.

Painting and weathering

I needed to hold this little puppy securely during painting. I glued pieces of thick wire to the bottom, and with a magnet clamped in a stand I could manipulate the model with ease. Painting began with the interior, and from what I could tell the Simca was likely painted the same inside and out. As I wanted to use a deep blue, I was concerned that the closed roof would leave the cabin too dark to appreciate any detail. To brighten it up, I made the fabric panels tan - a warm contrast to the blue. That’s odd... I never fussed over harmonizing colours when painting SPG’s. The interior fabric is Desert Yellow, shaded with dilute Red Brown. The metal body is Medium Blue lightened with Deck Tan. I added a little Clear to give it a satin finish. Incidentally, all the paints are Tamiya acrylics, unless

noted otherwise. The cloth door panels were painted, then masked and the blue applied. I dry-brushed the edges of the doors and frames with Humbrol 89 Middle Blue. The latches are Alclad II Chrome, buffed with graphite. I reversed the order for the rest of the cabin; the blue first, then masked, followed by the tan. The underside of the cloth top is Dark Grey, shaded with Field Blue. The struts and their pivot arms are NATO Black buffed with graphite. The rear window here is thin cellophane, from a cigarette package. Below it is a handle draped with a leather strap (to secure the folded top) of .002" lead foil - Vallejo Panzer Aces 312 Leather - and a chemically blackened PE buckle. The steering column and shift stick are Dark Grey, with their wheel and knob in NATO Black. Detail was enhanced with a subtle dry-brushing of Titanium White oil. I highlighted the embossed frame on the dash with a pin-wash of Burnt Sienna oil and a dry-brushing of Humbrol 89 Middle Blue. The lateral toggles were brushed with Rub’n Buff Silver Leaf. The switches were chemically blackened and the knobs sprayed Dark Grey. The dials are Archer’s new set for the Simca, and are conveniently printed with bezels. The seat frames were primed with Alclad II Gloss Black Base, followed by Alclad II Chrome. This was my first experience with the chrome, and I was very pleased; it looks real, and is immune to masking tape. After painting and shading the cushions, I ran a pin-wash of Burnt Sienna oil along the piping. Finally the edges were highlighted

An empty Lucky Strike cigarette package, confiscated from a POW, lies crumpled on the floor along with a tattered copy of “Signal” magazine. Behind the seat is a brief case and a small wicker suitcase. The helmet is Neutral Grey, shaded with German Grey. Chips are Vallejo Cadmium Maroon and Coal Black (3:1) applied with a fine sponge. The top was buffed with a bristle brush, to impart a slight sheen. A Plus Model set supplied both the wicker basket and the “brief case” - actually a small suitcase. The basket is Desert Yellow blotched with Dark Yellow, and the leather clasps are Vallejo Beige Brown. I dry-brushed the edges with Humbrol 24 Trainer Yellow. Although you can barely see it, I really like the brief case. It’s Deep Green lightened with Deck Tan, shadowed with J.A. Green and dry-brushed with Yellow Ochre oil. The Wehrmacht eagle is part of an Archer ammo box stencil. I muted it with a dilute over-spray of the J.A. Green. Finally, the hardware is Vallejo 70801 Brass buffed with graphite. I didn’t have room for the blanket roll. The floor of the cab is German Grey, highlighted with Dark Sea Grey. Soiling throughout is dabs of AKI 045 Dark Brown wash and AKI 069 Streaking Grime, refined with a brush moistened in Humbrol thinner. Some earth tone

MIG pigments were ground into the floor, with scattered debris of crumbled cigar tobacco fixed with dilute Vallejo Matt Varnish. Tamiya has engineered the kit so that the single-piece body fits into the front end with hidden joints. I took advantage of this to paint the camouflage before I completed the interior: I was waiting for Archer instrument dials, plus I could insert the windows afterwards. I masked the pre-painted roof and spare tire, as well as the windows (from the inside). The car’s civilian exterior is Medium Blue. I assumed that before starting the camouflage any shiny bits would be covered, so I painted over the “chrome” on the front end, doors and hubcaps with NATO Green.

The author thinned the dash’s lower edge and removed some of the details. New switches and were made with PE washers, resin rivets and wire. The central ignition switch is a modified Bronco single wing nut. The two side clips are tiny pieces of .005” card. The kit mud flaps were replaced with lead foil items and the thick registration plates were swapped with .005” card and moulded nuts.

Tamiya Epoxy Putty (Quick Type) was rolled on waxed paper, given 24 hours to harden, then cut and sanded to shape. New tail lights were made from clear styrene rod then painted with Tamiya X-27 Clear Red.

Time for leaves

Choosing the flora for the camouflage pattern was simple - Maple leaves of course - I’m Canadian, eh! But attaching the leaf “masks” was not as easy as I had expected - not difficult, just tedious. I needed an adhesive that would both secure the Plus Model paper leaves yet allow easy removal and clean-up. After some experimentation, I settled on Elmer’s white school glue, diluted 50% with water. Taking three or four at a time, wet leaves were positioned, adjusted and pressed down. Plus Model’s ‘Extra Colors’ leaves are thicker and spongier than the plane ones; but this allows them to be forced into groves and corners. The aggravation came as the fronds dried. On flat

The neat result of all that fiddly masking was worth it!

areas the edges often curled up, especially on the thinner leaves. The tips were re-dampened and held down until dry. In some places it was easier to cut a leaf and fill the joint with Blu-Tack putty. The glue left an almost invisible “halo” that had to be gently wiped away with a moist brush, but without re-wetting the leaf. Moreover, the thicker leaves tended to shed tiny fibres that also required removal. There are 281 leaf pieces, averaging four minutes each - do the maths - tedious! I had planned for a brown and red camouflage over the civilian blue, but once faced with my Simca “salad” I was unsure. I glued some oak leaves onto my trusty “paint mule” turret and experimented. As I feared, the brown/red combo was too dark, and green stripes over yellow obscured some leaves. I decided on a background of yellow with green running between the leaves. I sprayed Dark Yellow at a low 15 psi, to avoid dislodging the masks. And I was careful to not saturate the paper, for fear of them curling again. Then, using my Iwata Custom Micron, I laced NATO Green between the leaves. The masks were easily washed away with water, revealing an irregular yellow border around each. If I were to do it over, I would make the yellow more prominent. The outer surface of the cloth top is German Grey. To emphasise the fabric, I deliberately made the camo colours less intense. And to suggest paint wearing from it as it was repeatedly opened and closed, I misted the edges and peaks with

dilute Dark Grey. The tyres are Dark Grey blotched with Field Blue, and the air valves are Humbrol 96 RAF Blue. The primer on the hub of the front right wheel is a mix of Flat Red and Red Brown, with a pin-wash of 502 Abteilung 050 Olive Green oil. I screened dozens of photos of staff cars surveying the positions of tactical signs and unit insignia. When present, the unit was most often marked on the right front fender, with the tactical symbol on the left. The kit reverses these positions for its 3rd Infantry Division Simca. However Tamiya is correct they are based on a photo of one of the exceptions, taken on a dusty road in Russia. In the few rear views, most tactical signs were on the. Archer dry transfers indicate my Simca is from the Staff Company of the 22nd Panzer Division. I also added width markings to the bumpers. As contradictory as it seems, there are several photos of camouflaged staff cars with these highly visible white bands. They were used for night traffic control, typically painted on the fenders or bumpers of soft-skin vehicles. My flashes are Flat White tinted with a touch of Sky Blue. The Wehrmacht Heer registration plates are from the comprehensive Verlinden decal sheet. I chose one stamped with a red Feldpostnummer (field post number). I gave the body a protective layer of Humbrol Matt Cote, pressed the wind shield into its frame (no glue required), and attached it to the chassis. Before tacking

the doors in place, I ran a graphite pencil along some of their edges. After all the labour that went into the camouflage I was not going to obscure it with weathering, so I kept it to a minimum. Besides, such a car would likely belong to a young Prussian dandy who took pride in

its appearance - through the pains of his Ordonnanz (orderly). I first ran a pin-wash of Burnt Sienna oil along the panel lines. I was aiming for a dust effect, but this looked like rust. I repeated the wash with a mixture of AKI 017 Earth Effects & 015 Dust Effects (1:1), softening the edges

The Ordonnanz begged me not to add any offending paint chips or rust. A very dilute dusting of Buff was sprayed around the lower chassis, concentrating on the fenders, wheels and back end. Light coloured pigments, AKI 042 Europe Earth and MIG 028 Europe Dust, were secured to the tires, wheel wells & underside with MIG Pigment Fixer. To break the monotony of the dust, I sprayed blotches of dilute Flat Earth over the Buff, and brushed MIG 033 Dark Mud pigment into some corners. he latest bike to emerge from the Borgo Panigale factory in Bologna, Italy, is the Ducati 1199, inheriting its name from the designer’s native district and ready to challenge all comers on the superbike circuits. Ducati has taken this development as a challenge to reconsider its deep understanding of motorcycle racing, incorporating a new 195cv Superquadro engine as well as discarding the tubular frame in favour of an aluminium shell that also functions as an airbox. After its release in 2011, three versions were offered to potential buyers: ‘Standard’ (€19,000), the ‘S’ with Öhlins shocks, electronic suspension adjustment, Marchesini wheels and carbon fenders (€24,000) and ‘S Tricolore’ with ABS, telemetry, titanium exhaust and tricolor paintwork (€29,000). The following year, the ‘R’ version with aluminium tank and carbon elements was released for a staggering €32.000! This allowed the machine to register for the SBK Championship in 2013. There, shall we say, she has not really shone: Badovini not finishing higher than 12th place and Checa and Neukirchner not beyond 15th place. In 2014, it rose slowly into contention because at the time of writing this, Davies and Giugliano occupy the 6th and 7th places with a few podiums already made. No doubt the bike will improve further in the coming years.

To break you in gently, you can start by drilling 212 holes into the brake discs with a 0.5mm drill. It is a tedious job but improves the look of the completed model no end. I took the opportunity to drill the slots with a 1.2mm drill and sand the surfaces to remove the remaining detail.

With the discs painted (Aluminium and TS-30 Satin Black), a drop of white glue (Tamiya Craftbond) was deposited using a toothpick into the holes. The rivets are tiny, so you have to work calmly. The result is really beautiful and very rewarding.

The detail set contains a turned brass fork with dip tubes embellished with a black rubber gasket. It also includes the beautiful nuts and fork crown, in blue anodized aluminium and a reservoir for the rear shock.

After simply painting the forks in X-32 Silver Titanium, the elements were brought together. A ring of soft vinyl ensures the strength of the assembly.

The nuts for the fork crown were delicately glued with drops of superglue. Take care not to spill any glue, as these pieces are beautiful, but very small and a misplaced spot of glue would be a disaster at this point!

The fork is complete. It consists of no less than 23 pieces! The fork crown is X-32 Titanium Silver with black and white details. The handlebars are finished in satin black, handles in matt varnish and stalks in Boltgun Metal Citadel. These elements were attached temporarily for the photo.

V IN MINIATURE

Tamiya offers the "S" version of the 1199 Panigale, with the choice of red or matt black livery. As an avid tomato sauce fan (!), I naturally chose the Italian red, which is more emblematic of the Ducati brand. After completing the Tamiya 1:6 HarleyDavidson, which was very high quality, I certainly expected something good, but opening the box and progressing with assembly, I can only rave about the beauty of mouldings, ease of assembly and incredible precision with which Tamiya approached every part of the bike – it’s simply perfect! Tamiya’s plastic is always nice to work with and fixing parts on clusters as part of the preparation stages is a formality. Unusually for me, I worked in sub-assemblies, which were very simple to paint and build, before bringing them together on the assembly line with the minimum of glue.

The mufflers are very visible on the bike, so their painting should be completed carefully. A layer of TS-30 Aluminium was followed by a light layer with titanium paint (Modelmaster), to be polished afterwards with a soft cloth.

The painting of the exhaust is a cakewalk. Though pretty much invisible in the end, we can afford to highlight the weld beads. Here on a titanium base, the welds were just masked with narrow masking tape and covered with a layer of Alclad II Smoke; the effect is quite realistic.

Here we can see the work carried out on the radiator. Grills are in TS-30 and the rest is Satin Black.

The plates and brake selector were painted in X-32 Titanium Silver. The spring was not pre-painted: moulded in black, it should be primed in white before being sprayed in its yellow colour (TS-34 Camel Yellow). If all parts are fixed with liquid adhesive, the reservoir requires only a drop of superglue.

Before attaching the stand, whose small size makes it difficult to hold, it is most convenient to prepare the thread by painting it white.

The peculiarity of the Ducati Panigale is the swapping of the conventional tubular frame for a carbon structure, acting as an airbox.

The swing-arm is made of two halves that, when assembled, are painted in Satin Black. The plates are painted TS-38, a rather dark grey metallic composite texture typical of those parts. The chain was painted TS-30 Aluminium and links were touched in with Games Workshop Boltgun Metal, all enhanced by a wash of diluted Smoke to define the details and give life to the mechanics.

When installing the wheels (in three parts on each side), it is best to start with the pattern with the white rectangle (which will receive the Marchesini logo) opposite the tyre valve.

Be careful not to get trapped like myself; we must fix part No.C35 (connecting rod with the damper) BEFORE attaching the mudguard, otherwise we can not screw it all together! Fortunately, there are those little eyeglass screwdrivers that are thinner than Tamiya tools to go into the notch, with the fender already fixed in place…

With a clean cloth, we strongly press done the decal so that it begins to fit into the groove of the rim.

Optical reflectors were painted with a brush, using Prince August Polished Aluminium rather than TS-83 and that was enough, because they will not be very visible once in place.

When all three parts of the rim decals are in place and aligned, they can be set with decal solutions. After a few minutes – because the piping must begin to fully adhere to the rim – we can help them conform with a damp cloth. It’s most important to check the alignment of three decal elements. We can then apply a coat of satin varnish if desired.

Opening the box and progressing “ with assembly, I can only rave about

the beauty of mouldings, ease of assembly and incredible precision with which Tamiya approached every part of the bike – it’s simply perfect..!

The engine is beautiful. The serpentine exhaust and muffler look very futuristic and attach without glue. The mouldings first received a mixture of bright brass and copper from Modelmaster – a little too orange, and not very realistic. The parts were easily cleaned off to be repainted with a mixture of X-31 Titanium Gold and X-33 Bronze.

The model is divided into a dozen sub-assemblies and several small additional parts. Up until now this has been a very relaxing build!

Final assembly begins with the frame/airbox on top of the radiator and engine – all joined with screws for a nice, clean finish.

The single arm fits easily through small locating pins. Two small screws, et voila! Still no adhesive, except for the sprocket cover.

We continue with the selector assembly shock absorber and brake pedal, five screws and a spot of glue for the master cylinder. The entire mechanism is already very dense and yet still no difficulties have arisen.

The superb fork, conventionally fixed with a 20mm screw.

Ironically, I had many cold sweats when assembling the fairings. Open, angular and futuristic, they are superb, but sometimes require glue spots on small exposed surfaces such as mirrors, backrest, fuel tank etc. They may therefore be subject to traumatic blunders for clumsy modellers like me, as you will find out by reading the rest of this feature…

CONCLUSION

I wonder how I'll get on with the Panigale in the coming months as I know that Renaissance and Dexter Models are currently working hard to offer Transkits to reproduce original versions; Senna black version with red rims; Superbike versions 2013 and 2014; Japanese version with new wheels. This is a beautiful bike and a pleasure to ‘ride’. It is for me perhaps the best 1:12 motorcycle kit of all time. Beginner or experienced, no hesitation, treat yourself: build your Panigale! ●

The rear wheel is no problem but beware of the service stand: it enters the vinyl ring inserted in the arm but the thickness of the paint requires a little force that can lead to breakage of the piece. The stand was painted black, instead of red. Make sure the brake discs are fitted the right way round!

Penultimate stage; the internal covers - three screws and still no glue!

The fairings. Very angular, they fortunately have very few seam lines to remove. Once cleaned up, they can be sprayed with a layer of primer.

TS-8 Italian Red spray is a great colour, requiring only fine layers to cover the entire surface of the parts. The matt finish disappears with a more generous final layer but avoiding unexpected paint runs and sags.

The slightly grainy general is appearance due to high temperatures that prevailed at the time of painting. Even after a coat of TS-13 Clear it had to be smoothed by sanding with Micro-Mesh 1800 and 3200, followed by Tamiya Polishing Compound and then Tamiya Fine Finish.

Unfortunately, the sharp edges were exposed by the sanding. To cover these over, a fine brush loaded with decanted TS-8 was used. These repairs will be invisible under a new coat of varnish.

After applying the decals (few and of excellent quality) a final layer of varnish was applied before polishing to a brilliant finish. Then the remaining elements were glued on: the fairings with a drop of liquid glue, gas cap, cushion backrest, side vents and glazing.

The solution; a solid carbon-fibre panel, like real racing machines! It looks tidy while being a plausible custom addition made by its owner. Phew! Close call...

For the windscreen, a disaster occurred when glue overflowed from the brush: a beautiful smear ending up between the glazing’s inner face and its support. Damn! I should have used white glue but its adhesive power was not enough. So, what to do?

The attachment of mirrors was very stressful. White glue is not strong enough so we must again use liquid glue through the interior. This time, everything went well!

The rear is divided into three parts. We must first insert the sides, engaging the gills (1) and inserting the pin in the recess (2). The central portion fits over this and holds the seat assembly with the reservoir that will be installed in later on.

It remains only to fix the fairings, taking care to slip them between the footrest and the engine before screwing everything in place.

One last polishing with anti-static ‘Modelling Wax’ restores the shine and repels dust. This is done at the end to avoid further handling of the motorcycle fairings.

W

ith only the venerable Monogram kit for company, the modelling world has hardly fallen over itself to replicate this aircraft in 1:48 and so the release of a new kit is certainly welcome. Along with it’s inherent ease of construction – making it a perfect beginner’s model – it allows a ton of choice when it comes to colour schemes, markings and weapon loads. Add the likelihood of a trainer variant and the later Bravo model to the mix and you could be building Tweets for years to come! But less of the musings, let’s take a more detailed look at what’s in the box.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

Given the simplicity of the real aircraft, this new kit is a far from complex offering that will please both beginners and seasoned modellers alike, the sensible breakdown of the airframe and the care with which the cockpit, undercarriage and weapons have been tackled, pointing to a relaxing and rewarding build. Detail is well created, the use of both incised panel lines and raised features on the airframe offering a pleasing degree of complexity, which in concert with the fully appointed cockpit and weapons fit, result in a replica oozing character and interest. Having now built this kit, one of its real charms is the sheer number of external details that break up the otherwise delicate airframe; weapons pylons, weapons, undercarriage, speed brakes, thrust deflectors (supplied along with the speed brakes, on the etched fret) and aerials, the whole thing positively bristles with detail!

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AVIATION TRUMPETER 1:48 CESSNA A-37A DRAGONFLY ● KIT NO.02888

Though this kit is a standard plastic offering, there are some small details supplied on a photo-etched fret. With care, they should be easy to use, even for beginner/intermediate modellers.

You’ll have fun assembling and painting the internal areas, such as the nose wheel bay, seen here.

Detail is very nice in this kit, finely incised panel lines looking good on the surface of the completed build.

There are plenty of underwing stores to use – and plenty to go in the spares’ box once the model is complete!

Everything is well moulded, but held onto the runners with plenty of gates that need care to remove from the individual pieces.

You can either paint the superb instrument panel, or using the decals supplied for the instruments to bring it to life.

The padded walls of the cockpit are excellent – careful painting brings them to life, even further.

V

As with all kits from this manufacturer, we find that all of the parts are well-moulded in grey and clear plastic, a small photo-etched fret offering some of the more delicate details such as intake guards, seat straps and what look to be strengthening strips for the drop-tanks. The breakdown of the parts is sensible, with simple fuselage halves, wing sections and one-piece tailplanes, dealing with the bulk of the airframe. Alternate versions are pointed to thanks to the flashed over pylon mounting holes and separate nose cone, the later Bravo model complete with refuelling probe being a distinct possibility. Who knows, we may even see the ultra-delicate T-37A at some point in the future… Though Trumpeter kits can be variable in terms of detail, this one is really rather nice, almost everything being more than acceptable. The cockpit is well appointed with multipart ejector seats, complex inner-fuselage features and instrument panel. That said, the rudder pedals and control columns

Construction begins with the wings. Here the mounting holes for the pylons are being opened up with a small diameter drill bit, mounted in a pin vice. Care needs to be taken to ensure the holes are drilled perfectly through the depressions moulded on the surface of the wing panel.

Once drilled, any excess plastic can be removed with a small file, such as the diamond file being used here. The pylons can then be test-fitted to ensure the holes are in the right place and wide enough to receive each one.

The pieces were removed from the runners using a fine razor saw. This allows them to be accurately removed, the blade flowing closely the edge of each piece, thus reducing not only the chance of damage to the delicate edge, but any cleaning up that may be needed once separated.

Many of the parts in this kit were moulded with the attachment points under the edges of parts, so the waste stubs needed to be carefully removed. This was done by first snipping the plastic pip away from the surface with a pair of side cutters, ensuring that the edges of the blades were as close to the surface as possible.

With the stub removed, the surfaces could be cleaned up with sanding sticks, a heavy grade one being used to remove the bulk of the material before smoothing the surface with a fine grade stick ready for assembly.

With the seam cleaned up, soft sanding sponges were used to remove any last traces of a joint, the sponge being worked lengthways along the tank in long, precise strokes. Take your time until the surface is perfectly smooth.

This model was assembled with liquid cement. There are many ways to joins kit parts, but I find the easiest and cleanest method to be holding the parts together ‘dry’ (that is, without glue) and then flowing some glue along the joint, allowing capillary action to take the glue the length of the joint. Hold for a few seconds and you are ready to move on to the next joint and so on until the section being worked on, is fully sealed.

Finally, the joints could be polished with a small piece of Scotchbrite, in this case a fine-grade scouring pad bought in bulk from a local discount store. I simply cut one of the sheets into small squares, ready for tasks such as this – cheap and simple!

With the wing halves joined, the seams could be cleaned up. This model features plenty of rounded edges, so a Flex-i-File was used to clean up the joints. This clever little tool allows the modeller to clean up these surfaces with little risk of flattening rounded surfaces such as this, the flexible sanding strip following the shape rather than gliding over it.

Though I liked the surface detail on this model, I decided to embellish it further with some delicate rivets. These were added using a Rivet-R riveting tool, which was rolled along panel lines and other areas of the airframe until the effect was nice and busy. This was done ad-hoc, no plans being followed – if it looked good, that was enough! Once finished, extreme care was taken not to sand of the surface of the riveted areas, so as not to remove these very fine details.

V are heavy-handed and

generic and god really do with some extra work or replacement. Moving on, the undercarriage legs and wheels exhibit fine features and look to be sturdy enough to carry the weight of the model, even when the nose is filled with sufficient weight to balance this notorious tail-sitter. The same can be said of the eight pylons that hang from the outer wing panels and though their sway braces are way too big for the scale, form sturdy mounts for the myriad whizz-bangs that are supplied in the box. Speaking of which, you’ll find drop tanks, what look like napalm tanks, M117 bombs, Mk.81 bombs, LAU-3 rocket pods, Suu.14A/A rocket pods and Suu-11 minigun pods. All are well detailed and finished off with some nicely printed stencils found on one of the two decal sheets supplied in the kit – the other sheet offering the remaining markings for a rather generic, USAF bird finished in standard SEA colours of light grey, brown and two-tone green.

The weapons have been assembled and the pylons fixed in place, ready for a test fit. As you can see, the space under that little wing is limited so it pays dividends to test fit everything now to ensure location, rather than when the model is painted. After all, you wouldn’t want to make adjustments after spending hours painting and decaling, would you?!

THIS MONTH’S FEATURE…

As a slight change of pace, we decided that for this build we would offer the beginners amongst you a step by step guide on how to build a simple kit like this. This month we will show you how the model was constructed and in so doing, provide you with plenty of images that reveal how the team here at TMMI would approach a model like this, what steps we would take, the tools that we use and the materials that we would gather together in order to get the job done. Many of the ideas are simple, but may be easier to understand and use when accompanied by both an image and a short written description. Next month we will complete the project with some ideas on how we painted the model and added the final details. Let’s get started! ●

Above; testing fitting pieces is an important aspect of any build. Here you can see that the intakes are fixed in place, but when it came to joining the wing and fuselage sections, they didn’t align properly, those intakes fouling the fit. That being so, small areas of plastic were removed until everything aligned perfectly, the same process being repeated on the other side, until everything fit where it should. Left; here’s a close up of the wing surface after riveting. As you can see, the effect is highly realistic – especially, once painted.

Construction is proceeding at a pace now, with the main airframe components together and cleaned up. But that’s not the reason for this picture. I often see images of workbenches where the surface is covered with all manner of kit parts, paint, glue and accessories with barely an inch to work in. Don’t do this! If you want to be truly productive and create well made, well finished models, work in as tidy an environment as you can - you’ll find it easier to concentrate on the job in hand, will reduce accidents and the risk to your finishes from dust and dirt. Trust me – I know what I’m talking about!

The fit of the major components was excellent in A small gap was present under the fuselage, which this kit, the wing to fuselage joint being particularly was filled with some Zap superglue applied with a good. That being so, only a swipe over with a cocktail stick. brush full of Mr Cement S was needed to create a perfect finish.

Once in place, the superglue was set with some Deluxe Materials ‘Roket Blaster’ before being sanded smooth. This is often a better way of dealing with these fine joints the quick-setting nature of the superglue allowing each to be dealt with in minutes rather than the hours needed to allow more tradition fillers to work their magic.

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AVIATION TRUMPETER 1:48 CESSNA A-37A DRAGONFLY ● KIT NO.02888

Though Trumpeter kits can be “ variable in terms of detail, this one is really rather nice, almost everything being more than acceptable...

The biggest weakness in this kit is the canopy. For some reason Trumpeter insist on moulded their clear parts in really thick plastic, that looks fine if you choose to close the canopies, but completely unrealistic, should you want them open. We can however improve things a little…

With the outside of the canopy masked to protect it, the edges of the canopy frame were filled away at a 45˚ angle, taking care to ensure that plastic was removed evenly. This creates the illusion of a thinner frame once painted.

With the rough filing complete, the frame was worked on with a sanding stick until the surface was smooth and even. This needs to be done slowly so that only the moulded frame is reduced and not the surrounding clear panels.

In order to simplify painting, the undercarriage legs were completely assembled, including their retraction jacks and associated details. Here, the leg has been dropped into its location hole and then the jack glued in place with a drop of Mr Cement S, once dry, this little subassembly will be removed ready for painting. Note the fine point of the glue brush – perfect for delicate jobs such as this! (www.modeldesignconstruction.co.uk)

The best way to polish clear parts? Rub them on the knee of your jeans…!

There are some small strengthening strips under the tanks that you will find on the etched fret. These need care to assemble, thin superglue being used to joint them together and then fix them within the slots moulded under each tank.

DES KIT, FRANCE

AUTOCAR TRACTOR U-7144T CLOSED CABIN 1942/45 deskit.online.fr SCALE; 1:35 • MATERIALS: PE, WS KIT NUMBER; 35133 it’s quite ironic that in the last issue we featured a reference feature on the Autocar U-7144T and this month, DES Kit issue a new kit of the closed cabin version of the same truck! This all-resin production packs in a lot of detail; it comes with a full ladder chassis, individually cast leaf-springs, part-by-part drivetrain, propeller-shaft brake and a full engine. The airbrakes’ compressed air tanks are provided so all the modeller really needs to add to complete the chassis detail are the air lines; lead wire would be ideal for this. The key visual point of the model, the grille, is provided as a cast resin frame into which brass rods are inserted, by far the neatest solution. DES Kit also offer a fuel tank trailer (35132) and dolly (35131) that are the perfect partners for the Autocar tractor. MN

A beautifully detailed production with some sophisticated touches and tons of charisma. Casting quality is excellent and the kit comes with decent instructions. Experience with resin kits will be preferable, and it’s also help to have access to some references of the real vehicle too.

FINE MOLDS, JAPAN

JAPAN GROUND SELF DEFENSE FORCE TYPE 61 TANK www.modelsforsale.com SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; FM43 The Type 61 was the main piece of heavy armour used by Japan’s ‘Ground Self Defence Force’ through the 1960s and up to the mid 1970s and is a classic ‘tank’ shape before newer designs became much ‘wider and flatter’. This alone gives it a certain retro appeal and coupled with the fact that it’s the type that might have appeared in early Godzilla films, it becomes an attractive modelling proposition. Fine Molds offer some of the best injection-moulded kits currently in production and this newtool production is no exception; it’s a state of the art production with some extremely delicate moulded parts and stunning link and length tracks in kit plastic with moulded-in sag. MN

Stunning detail and very fine engineering all round Standard paint scheme of dark green will need enlivening with creative weathering!

SEA HARRIER FA.2 www.luckymodel.com SCALE; 1:48 • MATERIALS: IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; K48041 The Sea Harrier is an interesting variant of Hawker Siddeley’s famous ‘jump jet’ and a newly tooled kit was long overdue. Enter Kinetic then, with this freshly moulded 1:48 replica, which depicts the FA.2 version. The kit comes moulded in standard mid-grey polystyrene and the parts exhibit a very fine satin texture which will aid paint adhesion but will disappear under it. Airframe panel line detail is very fine and recessed (naturally) and has the feel of a Hasegawa production, significantly more sophisticated than early Kinetic releases. The cockpit is sufficiently well detailed to look good when painted and the seat is a nicely moulded. Several markings-options are provided; aircraft in overall grey of 800 Sqn (2004 decommissioning scheme) and the celebratory 25 years of flying the Sea Harrier scheme RN Yeovilton 2004. MN

BMW M1 PROCAR www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:24 • MATERIALS: IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 07247 The BMW M1 is an iconic supercar of the 1970s and Revell’s homage to it in kit form is rather well done. The model comes with a representation of the six-cylinder engine, gearbox and drive shafts plus a decent cabin interior, although the seat could use a set of aftermarket harnesses. The suspension is well executed and includes steerable front wheels, although the pivot pins need sealing by the old technique of heating with a hot screwdriver – a ‘one chance’ procedure! Beautifully glossy decals are provided for the red, purple and blue portions of the livery so the modeller need only spray the bodyshell in overall white, which will come as a relief to many. MN

Excellent subject, fine airframe detail, tasty schemes

Classic subject, lots of internal and underside detail, good bodyshell

GERMAN SELFPROPELLED HOWITZER PANZERHAUBITZE 2000 www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS: IM, PE, MMA, WS KIT NUMBER; TS-012 The Panzerhaubitze 2000 is an advanced, self-propelled howitzer that mounts the mighty Rheinmetall 155mm gun. It’s used by the modern German, Dutch, Italian and Greek armies. The vehicle makes use of many Leopard MBT parts so it was perfectly logical that Meng would release this machine, following their magnificent Leopard 1 A3/ A4 kit and, oh boy, have they done an impressive job of it. The model is strictly a ‘curbside’ production in that it has no interior detail, but that’s no problem at all as it allows all the attention to be focused on the exterior, which really is a work of art. From the tracks to the turret top, we are treated to some of the punchiest detail you’ll ever find on an armour kit. We’ll be looking at this one in more detail soon. MN

Amazing surface detail, very thoroughly tackled from top to bottom No interior, but in this case it’s a plus point

US WHITE 666 CARGO SOFT TOP www.creativemodels.co.uk Scale; 1:35 Materials; IM, PE, SVT, WS Kit number; 83802 The handsome White 666 was a standard US military truck of World War Two and was used in many theatres of operation. Hobbyboss have done an excellent job with this subject, breathing life into the chassis (built up from rails and individual crossmembers) plus a very comprehensive winch and drivetrain. There isn’t a complete engine, just a representation of the sump and clutch housing (?) but this does keep things easier up top when it comes to assembling the engine cover/bonnet area. The front wheels are not steerable but with a little styrene surgery they could be angled to one side for a bit of character. Tyres come in hollow, flexible vinyl which will be hard to add flat spot to. The wood-textured cargo deck is is supremely well done and is free from ejector-pin marks in visible areas. MN

An excellent ‘utility’ subject with some fine detail in crucial areas. Lots of diorama potential Vinyl tyres are hard to add flats spots to

HUNGARIAN 40M NIMROD ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN www.creativemodels.co.uk Scale; 1:35 Materials; IM, PE, WS Kit number; 83829 The Nimrod was a specialised variant of the Hungarian Toldi 38M tank, using a large, open-topped turret to house the Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun. 135 examples were built and the type was used originally intended as an anti-tank vehicle, however the 40mm rounds couldn’t penetrate the heaviest Soviet armour, so it was taken up as an anti-aircraft tank. Hobbyboss’s kit is a fine production captures the sloping panels of the 38M well. The turret walls are commendably thin and utilise sprue-tabs for mould ejection, thereby obviating ejectorpin marks. Tracks are in the form of individual, glue-together type links and they are small and delicate, requiring careful trimming and handling. Friulmodel tracks might be an easier alternative. The Bofors gun is nicely detailed and the barrel is hollow-tipped, moulded in kit plastic. MN

I

f you are a friend of mine, you know that I have lobbied everybody and anybody to create a high quality, injection-moulded kit of the IAR 80/81 in 1:48. Alas, to no avail. After 25 years of hoping, a 1:48 kit hasn’t happened, but my eyesight has got worse and my hands have become less flexible. So when I saw that Azur/FRROM was going to release a 1:32 kit of my favourite aircraft, it sounded like the perfect opportunity for me to build this WWII iconic fighter. When I received my review sample and opened the box, quite simply, I was amazed. Although this is a ‘limited-run’ kit, the level of detail is truly outstanding. You will need to wash the parts before building to get rid of the mould-release film but that is a quick and easy process. The cockpit is made up of intricate mouldings and photo-etched parts, all with beautiful detail that builds up into a framework tub

that’s suspended between the fuselage halves, which also have nicely rendered framework inside. With paint and an oil-paint colour wash to bring out the details, the cockpit will come alive. The wings have some of the deepest and most convincing wheel wells I have ever seen. All of the control surfaces can be positioned in multiple positions. The flaps have recessed areas that are supposed to represent the depressions in the fabric covered flaps. I think with a little judicial sanding it could soften these areas up the create a little more convincing look. The engine is extremely detailed and the only thing that is needed is a wiring harness. The engine pipes are provided in tan resin and look very convincing. The engine cowling is made up of four major parts with cowl flap details provided in PE. The rest of the details such as the undercarriage, air filter

Instruction booklet is extremely clear.

intake, and propeller are convincingly tooled and nicely engineered. The kit comes with two very nice decal sheets with five different marking options. If you are going to do any research into this fighter, the book to get is the TMA book titled IAR 80, by authors Dan Antoniu and George. Although since this book was published, it has been determined that all IAR 81’s were painted in green only, all the other info is extremely through. To be honest though, unless you are going to be adding wiring and other small things, the kit has plenty of detail to look very convincing. ● MODEL SPEC SCALE: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:32 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . PANZERWRECKS 17, NORMANDY 3

Lee Archer, William Auerbach www.panzerwrecks.com ISBN 978-1-908032-09-6 We are now at volume seventeen of the marvellous Panzerwrecks series, which is quite an achievement in itself. In this edition, we are treated to a tour of Normandy’s wrecked German AFVs, including a knocked-out Panther near St. Lo being examined by US GIs; some interesting detail shots here and the tank ends up being loaded onto an American M25 trailer. We progress through photos of wrecked halftracks, StuGs and then, handily, an eightpage section on the Panzerwerfer 42, the Italeri kit of which has just been spruced up and re-issued by Tamiya. Some excellent photos of a destroyed Panzer IV Ausf.H follow, giving some great modelling ideas. A mixture of vehicles from a KO’d Flakpanzer 38 in Tessy-sur-Vire, a Jagdpanther of the s.Pz.Jg.Abt.654 in Elbeuf, plus several more examples of this machine in other settings, with some superb close-up views as a bonus. There are lots more vehicles depicted over the following pages, each of which will stimulate the imaginations of modellers wishing to create a miniature battlefield wreck, and this latest edition comes highly recommended. NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series HOW TO BUILD... REVELL 1:32 SPITFIRE MK.IIA The name Spitfire has now become synonymous with an entire island people, and their battle to maintain their freedom in the shadow of the Nazi jackboot. The very shape and sound of the Spitfire seems to still invoke and embody the usually reserved pride of the British person. It is probably true to say that Reginald Mitchell’s beautiful aircraft design is one of the most easily recognised and much-loved shapes that ever took to the skies. When actual mass production of the Spitfire ceased in 1948, over 20,000 machines had been built, and operated by over thirty countries around the world. This iconic series saw service with the RAF right up until the mid-1950s. It also saw service with the Irish Air Corps as late as 1961; a full 26yrs after the flight of the prototype K5054. Revell has now released an all-new 1:32 scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa. With some minor modifications, this model may also be built as a Mk.I or a Mk.Va. Over the course of five Chapters, James Hatch examines the kit contents in detail, describes construction of the model with lavish illustrations, and points out the areas of the kit that may be improved and corrected. This new book features an exhaustive step-by-step guide to construction; plus a painting and weathering tutorial. A number of essential reference resources are also included. More than 200 photos, a reference guide, and photos of the kit sprues are all included - a must have before you build the model!

The Editor’s Page... Time is right to model the Red Ball Express - keep ‘em rolling!

Further to the review of DES Kit’s new 1:35 U-7144T Autocar Tractor on page fifty-two of this issue, here we can see a real example in action within France, 1944, as part of the legendary ‘Red Ball Express’. This convoy, headed by an Autocar U-7144T of the 3990th Quartermaster (Transportation Corps) Truck Company and under the supervision of a USMPs, is moving a supply of fuel (7,500 litres per tank) on a tree-lined Normandy road. The second truck in the convoy is a Federal 94x43.

DES Kits’ new 1:35 release depicts the hard-cabbed version of the U-7144T.

See you again on December 18th! editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com

U-7144T IN NORMANDY The lead truck is a soft-cabbed Autocar U-7144T, followed by a Federal 94x43, a similar-looking but different cab-over-engine truck.
