NEWS DESK EXTRA: MODEL SHOW SHIZUOKA HOBBY SHOW
IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN SHIZUOKA! Marcus Nicholls travels to the home of model kits in Japan and reports from the Shizuoka Hobby Show 2018
TAMIYA hobbyco.net Tamiya's 1:35 Type 16 MCV vehicle and 1:48 F-14D vied with each other for top billing this year; both are magnificent. Other eye-catchers included the newtool 1:12 Yamaha YZF-R1M and 1:48 M4A3E8 Sherman 'Easy Eight', but no 1:32 aircraft announcements this year. The Editor’s lunch upon arrival at Shizuoka City!

President Mr S Tamiya surrounded by TV and press: a true celebrity!
ack in May I had the privilege of attending the Shizuoka Hobby Show in Tamiya's home city of Shizuoka, around one hour's bullet-train ride south of Tokyo. For those who interested in such things, I flew direct to Haneda Airport (in Tokyo Bay) on a British Airways Boeing 777-300ER; a rather old bird as it happened, but comfortable enough. A smooth but long flight was punctuated by overheated, tin-foil housed concoctions that made me rather glad I'd taken breakfast at Heathrow Airport. Upon arrival in Tokyo, I was greeted by monsoon-like conditions that were in stark contrast to the sunny and dry weather I'd left behind in the UK. Not to worry, the wonderful Shinkansen whisked me and my travelling companion Peter Binger from The Hobby Company southwards to the hometown of model kits. The schedule goes like this: arrive mid-morning, have some lunch then crash out for a couple of hours. Wednesday morning – with the sun now shining – and I was on the bus to the Tamiya Spectrum Hall, the company's main HQ, for a presentation with the agents where the new products are show to us for the first, official time. This was my chance to take a close-up look at the 1:35 Type 16 MCV, 1:48 F-14D Tomcat, 1:12 Yamaha YZF-R1M and the other new items on the way from Tamiya. The kits' design teams are also present at this event and it a special pleasure to have the opportunity of congratulating them on their newest scale model creations.
YET MORE MODELS?
After an afternoon visit to the famous 'Rainbow 10' model shop, a ten-minute taxi ride from Tamiya HQ (because I needed to see even more models!), I took a another nap (yes, I'm getting too old for this) and then an entertaining and beery evening with fellow modelling industry friends, eating Japanese food and

The new 1:12 Yamaha YZR-R1M looks equally cool with and without its cowlings. A metal front-fork upgrade set will be released for the kit
The next 1:48 tank in Tamiya’s armour line-up will be the M4A3E8 ‘Easy Eight’ Sherman
The subject of this issue’s main article is the new 1:35 Japan Ground Self Defence Force Type 16 MCV, which features working steering for the front four wheels, just like the real thing

AMK Avant Gard Model (Facebook) Kits Even with Tamiya showing off the 1:48 F-14D Tomcat, AMK are still pushing ahead with their model, pre-production parts of which were on show next to their fabulous 1:48 Kfir jet.
AOSHIMA BEEMAX hiroboy.com Aoshima’s stand is large and full of modelling treasures, much of which was from Macau-based Beemax with whom they work. The new Porsche 935 K2 flat-nose, Audi Quattro S1 and Lancia Delta S4 were highlights. Aoshima showed off a new Liberty Walk GT-R that looked even scarier than the previous one.. Delicious gyoza and salad for lunch today!
V talking into the small hours
(I'm not too old for that). Thursday morning marks the opening of the Shizuoka Hobby Show, the first of the two 'trade only' days where deals can be struck and snappers like myself can get a chance to shoot their photos of the new items spread around the two halls of the 'Twin Messe' venue. First up was Tamiya, naturally, and the company booth – which takes up one whole end of the North Hall – was an incredibly impressive spread of new items, a full-size Honda Civic rally, a pair of real Yamaha R1s (the 1998 and 2018 models) and an RC test track in constant use. The company President, Mr S Tamiya, was out front amidst the press-pack being interviewed for Japanese television and he looked as fit and sharply dressed as ever. Not bad for a gentleman in his mid '80s and it was a real buzz to be in his presence. Mr Tamiya is always very friendly and welcoming and I was honoured to spend a little time with him.
AN ALL NEW B-WING
Following the Tamiya stand, my next stop was Bandai, specifically to see if there were any new Star Wars kits coming. I was in luck! An all-new 1:72 B-Wing is on its way and it looked magnificent and much larger than I'd imagined. The prize for the smallest scale used for a kit must go to Bandai's new mini Death Star, at 1:2,700,000. It was no moon, it was a space station... Moving around the hall and I was into my stride now, making a beeline to Beemax and Aoshima who have some fabulous new 1:24 cars on the way. The highlight for me was the new-tool Porsche 935 K2 flat-nose in stunning Vaillant livery. It's such a beast of a car and I do hope I get an opportunity to build the kit. The new, short-wheelbase Audi Quattro S1 and parts of the Lancia Delta S4 were also on display and equally mouthwatering; they are sure to be big hits when released. Lunch that day

ASUKA
tasca-shop.ocnk.net
Formerly known as Tasca, this small company has very high standards as witnessed by their class-leading M4 Sherman kits. This time they have collaborated with Tamiya to create an updated kit of the JGSDF Type 74 G, coming with new parts for the gun barrel, side skirts, tracks and more. Paper lanterns adorn the entrances of many Japanese restaurants
Asuka has added new parts to Tamiya’s classic Type 74 MBT. The fabulous Akuyaku #1 tank from Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘Daydream Data Notes’ was on show too, with porcine crew!
BANDAI japan-cool.co.uk For us, the new 1:72 Star Wars B Wing ship was the highlight, but of course there were plenty of new Gundam and Mecha kits on show. The new Death Star is in the tiny scale of 1:2,700,000! Sushi time!
Bandai’s new-tool B-Wing in 1:72 is surprisingly large; the 1:2,700,000 Death Star was astonishingly small!

DEF MODEL
defmodel.com
DEF Model is a big favourite at TMMI because they come up with brilliant wheel/tyre sets for a wide range of military vehicles that improve the look of the model beyond measure; think of them as a Friulmodel for wheeled AFVs. Panda’s M-Pro Dash MRAP gets a new set of sagged and detailed ‘rubber’ (resin) and a set is on the way for Tamiya’s new 1:35 Type 16 MCV.
EBBRO
hobbyco.net
Jackie Stewart’s 1973 Tyrrell 006 looked fabulous, all the more so with a newly tooled Ford DFV engine. As did the bright red Hino Samurai, a diecast model coming in 1:18. In big 1:10, the Mugen Zero electric TT racer motorcycle was shown in its bare resin and Ebbro’s conversion of Revell’s VW Combi van was lovely.
V consisted of gyoza and a
shrimp and ham salad and very tasty it was too! Ebbro is a significant player in the scale model car world and they showed off the new Jackie Stewart Tyrrell 006 from the 1973 Formula One season. Also on Ebbro's stand was an early production build of their new 1:10 Mugen Zero electric TT racer, which will be a resin model. HK Models were present on the Aladdin's Cave-like Beaver Corporation stand, which held many other treasures that keep my camera busy over several visits. HK's most famous creation yet – the 1:32 Avro Lancaster Mk.I – was certainly one of the show's talking points and whilst it was announced some time ago, only now is it really coming together. The fuselage and clear-moulded cockpit section were impressive sights and even without external surface detailing (soon to be applied to the moulds) it made an enticing prospect. Hobbyboss's new 1:35 kits include the 1:35 Olifant Mk.2, Soviet BT-2, US Fast Attack Vehicle and Soviet 9K79 missile launcher and all looked rather good, even in just raw plastic. Meng announced their Sd.Kfz.179 BergePanther Ausf.A, Panther Ausf.D plus the infamous Soviet 9K37M1 Buk air defence missile and Zvezda showed off sprues and box-art for their new 1:35 T-34-85 mod.1944, all very welcome subjects.
REVELL'S NEW BEAUFIGHTER IN 1:48
The Hino Samurai, bottom right, is a diecast model in 1:18
Pottering over to the Hasegawa stand, I was able to find not only the new kits from this long-established Shizuoka City manufacturer – the 1:35 road-roller being my favourite – but also sprues Revell's new-tool 1:48 Beaufighter TF.X, because Hasegawa distribute Revell in Japan. Hasegawa also showed early 3D printed models of their forthcoming wheel-loader kit, also in 1:35. These superb little plantmachinery models could be the start of a new, credit card-draining addiction that I'm trying my best to resist... TMMI 273 July 2018

Two new aircraft kits were on show from this wonderful Japanese manufacturer, a new-tool IJN Type 96 Reconnaissance Aircraft 12 in 1:48 and the lovely Mitsubishi Ka-14 in 1:72, the latter a modification from an earlier kit. The 1:35 Type 97 Chi-Ha gets an armour upgrade. This is where we depart the Shinkansen - we’re here!
Fans of early Japanese military aviation will love the Imperial Japanese Navy Type 96 Reconnaissance Aircraft 12 in 1:48 and the lovely Mitsubishi Ka-14 in 1:72
HASEGAWA
hasegawa-model.co.jp
T1:35 plant machinery is the hot new thing from this maker and the models are gorgeous little replicas; the road roller is latest, plus a team of four workmen. The 1:24 Jaguar XJS lives again and a newly tooled Mitsubishi Colt Galant GTO-MR, Toyota STP 87C, Racing Honda SB-1 are on their way in the same scale. Make sure you get on the right carriage and sit in the correct seat on the bullet-train!
Hasegawa are pressing ahead with their range of plant machinery in 1:35, much to the delight of many modellers

HK MODELS
pocketbond.co.uk
One of the biggest (literally) releases shown this year was the 1:32 Avro Lancaster fuselage and cockpit section, from HK Models. The outer surfaces were yet to receive their panel lines and rivets, but this in no way diminished the impact of the display. Quite a magnificent achievement, so far. HK also showed their 1:32 Dornier Do335, a huge and imposing model. The big Lanc gets closer to production! The clear fuselage of this prototype shows off the interior detail
V
Back to the Beaver Corporation stand again and here there were some new arrivals, carried by hand to the show by TMMI collaborator and friend Charlie Pritchett; more BergePanthers! Where Meng had only illustrations, Takom showed assembled models and mightily tempting they looked too, with masses of internal detail that just makes the mouth water. With the two trade days over, the real fun could begin; the 'modellers' gathering', which must be around three times the size of the competition area at Scale Modelworld, Telford. It's an overwhelming ocean of modelling creativity and we'll be taking a look at it next issue. Until then, please enjoy this photo-report from the Shizuoka Hobby Show and try to spot your favourite new models amongst the images! My thanks go to my dear friends at Tamiya who made me feel so welcome, plus all the others who made the week such a fun time. See you all again soon! â—?

MOEBIUS AND PARAGRAFIX paragrafix.biz Moebius Models recently released their astonishing 1:144 kit of the ‘Discovery’ vessel from the 1968 film ‘2001 - A Space Odyssey’ and it is big and beautiful. ParaGrafix have already created a photo-etched brass sheet to up-detail it. Truly a mammoth project but what a display it would make.

PLATZ
tigerhobbies.co.uk
Platz make their own kits and also re-box and distribute others’ products, so it can be a little confusing at times. They do have a new-tool F-4EJ Phantom II on the way which promises to be very nice, and they also seem to be offering the Space: 1999 Hawk ship as a new tool, but it might actually be the old MPC kit. Still a great subject, whatever its provenance.
Platz offer an eclectic range of subjects in kit-form, the Space: 1999 Hawk being such an example

visit to the Shizuoka Hobby Show allows the visitor to do many things. Seeing the new models is, of course, priority numero 'one', but there are other
attractions too, one of which is getting up close and personal with some Japan Ground Self-Defence Force hardware. This year, we were privileged to have the chance

MODELLING REFERENCES JGSDF TYPE 16 MCV MANOEUVRE COMBAT VEHICLE
Front, righthand side headlights, indicators and other devices are housed in a low-mounted, bolted/welded box. Note the two brush-guards over the side indicator
Front lefthand side wheel/tyre reveals multi-bolted rims and vast Bridgestone tyres. The unique tread pattern is well depicted in Tamiya’s kit, but sadly the sidewall ‘Bridgestone’ logos aren’t, for licensing reasons
On the left hull side we can see the rectangular exhaust outlet for the 570bhp diesel engine, with sooty exhaust stains clear to see. The armoured grilles behind the exhaust (both sides) provides cooling air for the engine
A welded steel rod step offers hull-top access for the crew on the incredible tall machine. Again, note the twin brush-guards over the illuminated indicator, but not over the reflector. The brown paint on the steps’ kick-plate is lightly scuffed but not chipped
TYPE 16 MCV TECHSPEC The Type 16 Manoeuvre Combat Vehicle (MCV) equips designated JGSDF combat units. Due to its light weight and small size, it is designed for easy deployment (by aircraft if needed) allowing rapid movement on narrow roads and in built-up areas in response to various situations. Despite its small size and light armour, it can successfully attack much larger armoured fighting vehicles as well as personnel, using its large calibre gun. Weight: 26 tonnes Length: 8.45 m (27' 9”) Width: 2.98 m (9' 9”) Height: 2.87 m (9' 5”) Crew: four Main armament: 105mm rifled, low-recoil gun (developed by Japan Steel Works) Secondary armament: 12.7mm NATO M2 Browning machine gun, coaxial Sumitomo Type 74 7.62 mm NATO medium machine gun Engine: four-cylinder watercooled, turbo-diesel, 570bhp Power-to-weight ratio: 21.9hp/tonne Suspension: wheeled 8x8 Operational range: 400km (250 miles) Speed: 100km/h (62 mph) Source: edited from Wikipedia Overall rear view of the Type 16 gives a indication of the vehicle’s high profile. Large, black rubber mudflaps can be seen and although scuffed, the paintwork is in good condition
This close-up of the turret side reveals multiple tie-downs on each armour plate, sensibly moulded solid in the kit; it would be a major undertaking to replace them all with fine wire. The black on yellow winged horse emblem of the 4th Company, Tank School Unit, Fuji School Brigade has clearly been applied with stencils; this markings option is provided in the kit
Close-up on the rear left quarter reveals conventionallooking light cluster and jerrycan stowage rack. Note the rubber strap on the rack and the three bolts that fix the mudflap to the hull
24
Here we see the ubiquitous pioneer tools, all painted in hull colour and in 99% perfect condition. Note that wing-nuts are used on the clamps to secure the tools
This view of the tools on a Komatsu LAV, also on show at the SHS, shows a shovel in a slightly more worn condition and is an indicator of how the Type 16’s tools might begin to weather down; the wood of the handle and grip is starting to show through

This image of the vehicle's right rear quarter shows the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries maker's plate, the stencilled unit marking, a mis-matched tow loop in green and perhaps most interestingly, the scuffs above each step where crew members' boots have made contact with the painted hull
The rear face of the turret sports a stowage basket that, on deployment, would surely be stuffed with crew gear. This structure is well depicted in Tamiya's new kit
Looking at the rear suspension, we can just make out a temperature sticker in pale blue and a brake line. The small paint chips on the tow loop and lower hull seem to suggest the vehicle was primed in a dark pink colour
Overhead views of the vehicle were not possible, but we can still just see the chains the retain the smoke dischargers' caps. Note the light metallic wear on the armour panels' screw-heads The pivoting aerial base can be seen here and there’s a fair amount of detail to take in. It would seem that the entire aerial unit (olive green) fits into the swivelling mount (JGSDF Green)
The Type 16 is equipped with the newest generation M2 Browning .50cal HMG and this example is well patinated through use. The whole thing breaks down and is stored internally when not in use. Note the light paint scuffs on the brown portions of camouflage
From this angle, the JGSDF Brown is looking distinctly patchy and we can see where it has been applied by spray gun. Some wheel-arch detail is also apparent here
Again, we can see some spray-gun lines in the green paint, plus plentiful scuffs and stains, all of which are light. Note the recessed bolt-heads in the armour panels
The air intake grille on the vehicle’s righthand side reveals some thin weld lines along the horizontal bars, not depicted in the kit as they are so narrow. It would be a challenge to replicate them in 1:35
The Type 16’s L/52 105mm rifled gun is clad with heat shielding, the slightly uneven surface of which can just be seen here. Note the fabric dust cover which appears to be made from some type of oiled cloth.
The gun’s muzzle is a complex-looking affair with angled perforations around its full circumference. In the kit this is represented by a decal which is okay, but it would be better if drilled. The decal could, in theory, be used as a template for drilling
The kit's tyres come as flexible synthetic rubber mouldings and aside from the missing Bridgestone logos, they are very well detailed. There are no flat-spots of course, so we will have to wait for the wonderful Mr Hyun Jin Kim at DEF Model to work his magic and provide us with a set of resin replacements with weighting and full sidewall markings; www.defmodel.com

A
few short weeks ago I was in Japan, attending the Shizuoka Hobby Show, as you can tell from my extensive report on the preceding pages. One of the treats of this trip is being handed test-shots of one, two or even three of Tamiya's newest kit releases directly by my colleagues at Tamiya headquarters, before the actual show starts. It's a chance to see the kit first-hand before pretty much anyone else in the world outside of Tamiya and I consider it a real privilege. This year's big release is the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force
Type 16 Manoeuvre Combat Vehicle in 1:35, a thoroughly modern, eight-wheel drive machine (effectively a wheeled light-tank) that is serving alongside the Type 10 MBT as part of Japan's self-defence system. The model was presented to me in the increasingly familiar white box that is supplied to reviewers before the models go into full production and it makes them that extra bit special. Naturally, I was keen to rummage through the sprues once back in my hotel room and even without my optical magnifier I now need for modelling
(my eyes ain't what they used to be!), I could see some fabulous detail on the kit parts. On the first public day of the show I got up-close and personal (very up-close) with the real thing as it manoeuvred into one of the exhibition halls for overnight safety. I was rather impressed by its size and futuristic design and was itching to get started on the model. Upon returning to the UK and after enduring a bout of almost inevitable jet-lag, I settled in to my workshop and began cutting plastic.

On the upper hull's flat surface, we can observe two rectangular hatches whose grab-handles are unfortunately solid-moulded. In this prominent position they could detract from the model's realism, so they were snipped off and replaced with open handles formed from copper wire
OFFSET STEERING V WORKING, The kit's main feature, aside from its
sheer size, is the working front steering on the first four roadwheels as on the real vehicle. There's no interior detail but the turret hatches feature functional hinges and two crew figures are provided to fill the open voids. The tyres are moulded from a soft, synthetic rubber and feature extremely accurate tread detail. Sadly, the Bridgestone logos are missing from the sidewalls but this doesn't detract from the look of the finished model; our friends at DEF Model are already working on replacement resin wheels/tyres that will incorporate flat-spots and bulges to simulate the weight of the vehicle, plus the aforementioned logos. It's worth mentioning the indicators and head/tail-lights at this point. These
Typical for a modern armoured vehicle, the Type 16 features prominent periscopes for the driver and commander and Tamiya have provided all of them, plus the optics for the gun-sights, in clear polystyrene
are moulded in clear polystyrene and must be painted from behind (using clear red and orange and backed with silver paint) and must be fitted very early on in the model's construction, with no access to allow them to be retro-fitted and assembly's end. The lenses sit flush with the surrounding camouflaged surfaces and would be very fiddly to mask and spray, so I elected to pre-paint the areas surrounding the lights' locations with the appropriate green or brown, paint and install the lights and once the hull was built then cover the whole area with a blob of Blu-Tack, obviating the need for any precision masking. The Blu-Tack was simply peeled off much later leaving a (near) seamless result. After a few evenings' work I had the hull together. On then, to the
The driver’s optics are some of the first parts to be cemented in the construction sequence. With the exposed clear areas masked off with PVA glue, they were first sprayed metallic purple, then backed up with silver prior to being fixed in place
suspension which built up quite quickly, although it's vital to follow the instructions closely when assembling the steering and suspension systems as there are several parts that look very similar to each other and it's essential that they end up in the right places. The turret is structurally similar to the hull, with 'floating' upper and lower mouldings, clad with side panels to form a box-like structure. I have to say that even with their convoluted shapes, the two side parts fitted so well that I could barely see the join even before any cement (Tamiya Extra Thin) had been applied. The turret sports a row of four smoke dischargers either side and I added short lengths of photo-etched brass chain (from Hauler) to their caps for a little extra touch of detail.

The upper and lower hull parts have been cemented together here and just await the long side panels that run from nose the tail of the model
The upper and lower hull mouldings are seen here prior to being mated. The upper part sits on six pegs that cement to the lower part, a simple but extremely effective solution

With the main structures built, attention can be turned to the steering system. By following the instructions closely, this all comes together easily, but make sure you use the correct parts in the right places. The white substance in the underside views is filler, applied by the author to seal up the cemented joints but of course, completely hidden on the finished model...
The steering linkages can then be pushed into the polycaps, allowing them to rotate and stay firmly in place
The pivoting parts of the steering are located by polycaps, which are themselves retained behind small semi-circular caps which are cemented to the hull’s lower plate. They are of the smaller size and handling by tweezers is strongly recommended
The suspension system comprises four distinct modules, all fundamentally similar but each one uses unique parts and thus the instructions must be followed closely
Here we can see the first suspension unit, which was built up on the hull but not yet cemented to it. In this view, we can also see the pre-painted headlight surrounds One of the massive and beautifully detailed transfer cases of this eight-wheel drive machine

AND MUZZLE BRAKE DECAL V BARREL From here onwards the remainder of
construction comprises the addition of smaller detail parts to the turret and hull, plus the main gun barrel of course. This is moulded as a single piece, with the fume-extractor and dust cover formed in two halves that clamp over narrowed sections of the main tube. The muzzle brake is a separate part too, so take time in getting it perfectly aligned as it will look awful if mis-positioned. Arguably the model's only negative point is the treatment of the muzzle brake's spiralling rows of tiny holes, or rather the lack of them. This would be a very tricky part to mould in one piece, so as a compromise, Tamiya provide a decal to represent them. To show how this looks in practice I used it – and it actually looks okay – but if I ever built this kit again I would use the decal as a template to drill out the holes. The only significant additions I made to the model were the replacement grab-handles on the upper rear deck and the aerials rods. The latter were made from lengths of stiff metal wire from Albion Alloys, inserted into sockets made from fine aluminium tubing, also from Albion Alloys. The green flag's construction is outlined in the captions but in all the reference photos I could not see where it located, so I drilled a hole in the support tab within the turret for the commander figure, so it pops up out of his turret hatch. If anyone knows where it actually goes, I'm all ears.
The Browning M2 .50cal machine gun is a superb piece of moulding and tops off the model perfectly. It's worth spending a little time on its painting as it is so prominent, so I hand-brushed a layer of Humbrol Metalcote 27003 (it brushes better than it sprays) and once dry, buffed it up with a dry paintbrush. Over this I applied a layer of Future floor polish (Tamiya X-22 Clear will also work), tinted with a drop of Mission Models' Black, just enough to create a thin, glossy colour wash. Once this had dried, I airbrushed matt varnish in some areas of the weapon but left others shiny, to create contrasting finishes. I think it looks quite effective.
The assembly stages of the forward suspension module, blow by blow. The end of the drive shaft (right) appears to 'float' but this will be hidden once the steerable wheels have been fitted
Above left; with all four suspension units assembled (it's clear to see here how each one differs from the next) they can be finally fitted to the hull, in the correct sequence (above right and below)

The last thing to add are the shock-absorbers, which simply cemented to a location up in the hull and to a point on each lower wishbone
The right-side hub is being fitted here; first, it is hooked onto a pin protruding from the lower wishbone, then gently snapped into place in a retainer ring on the upper wishbone. A simple and elegant solution to the potentially complex steering system
In these two views we can see the steering in operation. The front set of wheels turn in a tighter arc than the second pair, the same as the real vehicle
THE TYPE 16 MCV V PAINTING While in Shizuoka I had the chance
to visit a model shop (of course!) and here I purchased the JGSDF Brown and Dark Green necessary for this model. I have been wanting to try these paints for months but they aren't in the UK yet, so here was my chance. I didn't buy the thinners (probably best not to have this in my suitcase; I felt I was pushing my luck with just the lacquer paints as it was) so I used Mr Color Leveling Thinner which worked perfectly, as did the paints. The 'Leveling' part of the thinner means it contains an agent that slows down the drying time of the paint, allowing the paint droplets to blend together (level) on the model's surface. This is no gimmick; it really works and I was amazed at the smooth finish of the Tamiya Lacquer paints. The only downside are the fumes that are given off, so they need to be sprayed with very efficient workspace ventilation and a good quality face mask.
Each of the eight, identical wheels mount on polycaps, trapped earlier within the hubs. They are finely detailed and feature individually moulded ‘hubcaps’
More polycaps feature in the trunnions of the 105mm main gun mount, allowing it to elevate smoothly once fitted
Weathering the tyres
WEATHERING
The dirtying-down process was restricted to some accumulated dust on the hull's top surface and some light, splashed-up/streaked-down mud and dust on the hull sides, nose and rear. AK Interactive 'Worn Effects' was airbrushed over the whole painted model – a terrifying moment as it looks hideous before it dries – and then lightly sprayed a sandy-coloured mix from Mission Models acrylic paint in

The author attempted the old trick of spinning the tyres against a piece of coarse sandpaper to add extra texture to the treads, but it had little effect and was abandoned
To ensure a layer of dust was embedded between the tread blocks, a sandy colour was mixed from Mission Models acrylics and diluted with the recommended thinners

The assembled model, minus aerial mounts and crew. Even at this stage it has an imposing presence on the model bench!
The mixture was then airbrushed over the treads of each tyre while still fitted on the mini-drill (on an ersatz mount made from a grinding cylinder whose diameter was boosted with Tamiya tape to the correct size). The TMMI action photo above right even shows the tyre while spinning!
A piece of cotton cloth moistened with more MM thinners was used to wipe away the paint from the outermost surfaces of the tread blocks to suggest where the dirt had rubbed off on Tarmac

As a test, this model was airbrushed with Tamiya Lacquers, LP-26 Dark Green (JGSDF) and LP-25 Brown (JGSDF). They are not on sale in the UK yet and were purchased by the author when in Japan. Diluted with Mr Color Leveling Thinner, they performed flawlessly
One item not included in the kit but seen in many images of real Type 16s on manoeuvre, the little green flag was made from aluminium foil from a tub of peanuts (washed to remove oil!), and superglued to a length of brass rod. It was sprayed with Tamiya X-28 Park Green, then matt varnished

V faint patches. This was then partially
removed in vertical streaks using a flat brush dampened with tap water, creating the basic effect. The dust was emphasised later by hand-painting the same mixture along panel lines and hatches. The black soot from the diesel engine's exhaust was airbrushed on, not forgetting to apply some where it seems to get sucked back into the engine through the big grille next to it. I wonder if this is a design flaw with the real machine, or intentional? The figures are excellent and even though I am no great figure painter, I was set on installing them from the start of the project. I used Humbrol Enamels for the faces and uniforms (which, in retrospect, are probably a bit light in colour) but cleverly, I forgot to fit the goggles. The helmets are moulded individually which means they can be airbrushed for a more consistent finish.
SUMMING UP
Given a choice, JGSDF subjects would not be in my top five 'most desirable model types' to build, not because I find them uninteresting, but they can't really be heavily weathered and therefore present me with more of a challenge in how to make them look visually appealing. With a dark and rather plain camouflage scheme, one's only option is to add figures and splash co colour and that little green flag came to my rescue. Tamiya's 1:35 Type 16 MCV is an absolute triumph, combining fine detail, perfect fit of parts and an unrivalled speed and ease of assembly. I can foresee aftermarket sets that will address the muzzle brake, grab handles plus other tiny parts that the model lacks and of course, DEF Model's resin wheels/tyres which will give the model a weighted look. Even if you, like me, don't usually build modern Japanese armour, give this one a try, it's a beauty. My thanks to my friends at Tamiya for the early sample. â—?

t’s hard to imagine a more iconic WWII-era airplane than the North American P-51 Mustang. Its graceful lines have long captured the imagination of aviation enthusiasts, modern day air show attendees, and modellers alike. The aeroplane was originally designed by North American Aviation after being approached by the British Purchasing Commission to build the Curtiss-Wright P-40 under license. Convinced they could build a more modern replacement of the P-40, North American were successful in their campaign and the first P-51’s
36
(Mustang Mk. 1’s) entered service with the RAF in 1942. Throughout WWII the aeroplane would prove an excellent fighter and ground attack platform; American P-51 equipped units from the 8th, 9th, and the 15th Air Forces would claim nearly 5,000 enemy aircraft shot down and another 4,100 destroyed on the ground, accounting for more than half of all enemy aircraft destroyed during the war. With more than 15,000 built, the P-51 would ultimately serve with more than twenty-five countries during and after the war, with the last retirement in 1984 from the Dominican
Air Force. Modellers have been fortunate to have a wide variety of P-51 kits to choose from in all of the popular scales. In 1:48 in particular there are a number of excellent kits to choose from including the venerable Tamiya P-51B/C and P-51D. Meng also recently threw their hat in the ring with the introduction of their innovative 'glueless' kit, and it’s also been confirmed by Eduard that they’re releasing a P-51D as well. Most recently, Airfix released a P-51D with

several other versions soon to follow including a Korean War-era F-51D. Having built both the Tamiya and Meng offerings I was anxious to see how the Airfix kit measured up.
THE KIT
Moulded in light grey styrene, the model is typical of new Airfix releases in terms of quality and engineering. Moulding is crisp with some minor flash in a few places and the kit features recessed panel lines and rivets throughout. Some of the panel lines may be considered a bit heavy by some,
but they’re not overdone in my opinion and are very consistent throughout the various parts of the model. Where the kit really shines is the abundance of options: variable position flight control surfaces to include raised or lowered flaps, radial tread and checkerboard tread wheels, raised or lowered landing gear, two types of drop tanks (75 gallon metal and 108 gallon compressed paper), and underwing armament to include bazooka rocket launchers and 500lb bombs. A choice of tails is also included, both being the later production versions
with fin fillets with the design of the kit allowing for the possibility of an early version without the fillet in the future perhaps. The clear sprue contains no less than three rear canopy choices and two forward canopy choices. A seated pilot figure is also included to place in the cockpit should you desire. Decals are included for two aircraft; one from the Pacific theatre of operations and one from the European theatre. Full stencils are also included and the decals are well printed and in register. So, without further delay, let’s get started!

V CONSTRUCTION As with most aircraft kits construction
begins with the cockpit. Since I have a bit of an aftermarket addiction (recognising it is the first step towards recovery!) and it was available, I incorporated the excellent Eduard Brassin resin cockpit designed for the kit into this build. The kit-supplied parts are perfectly adequate but the Brassin set adds that extra level of detail that makes the finished model stand out. Due to the integrated design of the kit’s cockpit, oil cooler, and tailwheel well, the cockpit floor needs to be removed. This was a pretty simple cut made with a razor saw and the corresponding Eduard cockpit floor was reattached after painting. The resin sidewall replacement parts fitted perfectly and due to the unique design of the kit-supplied parts no surgery or removal of detail was required on the fuselage sides. The remainder of the cockpit was built per Eduard’s instructions and airbrushed with a mix of Mr Color C27 Interior Green and C351 Zinc Chromate Type I with a little Tamiya X-22 Clear mixed in for a semi-gloss finish. This is a technique I use to help with the application of detail washes later on as the surface lends itself to easier clean-up of any excess wash. Various details were then picked out with Vallejo acrylics. The cockpit floor was given special attention to represent the worn anti-skid material typically applied over the wooden floor surface. The floor was first airbrushed with Tamiya XF-57 Buff followed by several light coats of AK Interactive Worn Effects chipping fluid applied through the airbrush. After drying, Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black was airbrushed over the chipping fluid, allowed to dry, and then removed by wetting the surface with water and scrubbing it with a stiff brush. The results reveal the wood surface and effectively replicate the wear of a pilot’s feet on the floor.

Under a layer of paint, light weathering and with data placards, Eduard’s resin cockpit walls look superb
To ensure the fuselage halves are as tightly bonded as possible, clamps were gently applied around the tail and air intake areas
The main undercarriage bay is seen here, painted and ready for installation
EDUARD IN THE OFFICE
The excellent Eduard photo-etched instrument panel was also put to use as well the included sheet of placard decals to busy things up on the sidewalls and radio equipment behind the pilot’s seat. The resin seat also features excellent detail and looks superb with a set of Eduard’s new STEEL pre-painted seatbelts. Prior to closing up the fuselage there a couple of choices to be made including the style of tail and the style of carburettor air filter plate on the lower part of both forward cowlings. Once both of these components are added the two fuselage halves are ready to be joined. I noticed right away that some pressure would be required as the forward portions of the fuselage halves didn’t meet when the halves were put together. Some clamps came to the rescue and the rear of the fuselage was cemented first, allowed to dry, and then the forward halves were clamped together and the process repeated. The upper cowling was then added and the fit proved to be very good. With the fuselage together, construction moves to the assembly of the wings which consist of a one-piece lower wing and two upper wing halves. The landing gear bay is made with a short spar which also serves as the rear wall of the bay; this sub-assembly was cemented to the lower wing and provides a rigid reinforcement for the overall assembly. Prior to adding the upper wing halves you’ll have to decide on ordnance options and drill the appropriate mounting holes in the wing. With the wing complete, it was time for that crucial step in building any model aircraft – joining the wing to the fuselage! How well a model builds and is received by modellers is often gauged by the fit of the wing to the fuselage and in this case, it was nothing short of excellent and no filler was required. The lower cowling also forms part of the lower leading edge of the wing in front of the gear well and this part fitted equally well, needing just a touch of Mr. Surfacer 500 to fill a slight
The wing root to fuselage joint is exceptionally clean and requires no filler
The three formation lights were painted with Mig Productions clear acrylics
The airframe is nearing completion and proportionally, it looks spot-on

Almost time to paint; the canopy is masked up and the peripheral parts have been prepped

addition of smaller details including the propeller boss, forward intake, the radiator intake and exhaust door and the horizontal stabilizer, elevators, and rudder. There were a few sink marks in the flight controls that required some filling and sanding but nothing significant presented itself with the other items mentioned.
MORE EDUARD DUARD RESIN PLEASE!
The underwing stores, exhausts, landing gear and propeller were next in the construction sequence and this is where I chose to deviate from the kit supplied parts and upgrade to aftermarket parts. The propeller in my sample suffered from some odd dimples on both sides of each blade that would have required some significant filling, sanding, and reshaping. I replaced this with the excellent P-51 Hamilton Standard propeller and spinner in resin from the Eduard Brassin line. The kit exhausts were also a little anaemic in terms of shape and detail and these were replaced with Eduard Brassin samples in resin. The kit supplied wheels were also replaced with Eduard Brassin wheels in resin (fantastic, by the way!). Since the kit supplied landing gear has integrally moulded wheel hub detail, some surgery and a new axle made from brass tubing were required to adapt them to the Eduard wheels. And finally, continuing on the theme of Eduard Brassin parts, the 75 gallon drop tanks were replaced with Eduard examples which include some very handy decals for stencilling the tanks. All of these items were ultimately painted separately and left off the model until final assembly.

PAINTING
With assembly complete it was time to move on to my favourite part of every project – painting. The first task was to mask off the canopy, windscreen, cockpit and landing gear bay. For the canopy and windscreen, I indulged in Eduard precut masks which are a huge time-saver. The cockpit area and landing gear bay were masked with aid of some facial tissue and Tamiya tape; Gunze Mr. Mask liquid masking fluid was also used to seal up any potential gaps. Although I’ve experimented with the concept on several test models, I was still a little intimidated by the elusive natural metal finish and how to replicate it. Ultimately, I chose a method perfected by one of my favourite aircraft modellers and Editor of Model Aeroplane International, Spencer Pollard and used Tamiya AS-12 Bare Metal Silver aerosol.
Mr Color Olive Drab (304) was used to spray the anti-glare panel
The paint was decanted, thinned with a little Mr Color Leveling Thinner and sprayed through an airbrush. The results were exactly what I was looking for. One significant advantage is that there are no gloss black undercoats or special primers needed to deliver a spectacular finish. It’s also extremely durable, can be masked over with no fear of paint lifting and holds up well during subsequent weathering steps. Honestly, it’s so easy and so realistic that it has opened up many doors in terms of future projects that I might not have tried otherwise! Once painting was complete the model was allowed to dry overnight before moving on to the next steps. At this point I chose an alternate colour and marking scheme from what’s included with the kit decals and opted for an aircraft from the 359th Fighter Group based in East Wretham, UK,
Mig Productions Blue-Black colour-wash is seen here being flowed into the recessed panel lines of the airframe
dubbed “Daddy’s Girl” with a colourful green nose and blue rudder. Decals were sourced from Lifelike Decals – more on those later! I’ll be honest – I struggled with finding the right colour green for quite some time before standing in front of the Tamiya paint rack at my local hobby shop and having the revelation of looking outside of their XF range of flat colours! At any rate, I was very happy with the colour and the smooth lines of the masking job once all of the tape was removed. After allowing the paint to dry overnight, the anti-glare panel on the cowling was masked off and airbrushed with Gunze Mr. Colour C304 Olive Drab and allowed to dry overnight as well. The various external bits including the gear doors, wheels, propeller and spinner, and exhausts were all painted at this time in preparation for final assembly.

Once dry but not cured, the excess colour-wash was removed with a paper towel. This process is just enough to accentuate the detail

AMMO by Mig’s Oilbrusher is a handy way of adding some last-minute weathering touches
Almost there! One of the most satisfying stages of any model project is the bringing together of the finished sub-assemblies
AN WEATHERING AND V DECALS Once the model was allowed to dry
overnight, the decal process began in earnest. As I mentioned earlier, I chose Lifelike Decals for the colourful markings of 'Daddy’s Girl'. The decals are printed clearly in register on very thin carrier film and performed perfectly with the aid of a little Micro Set and Micro Sol for the trickier compound curves. The ‘Daddy’s Girl' decal includes a white background to place under the yellow making it opaque and the correct shade of yellow when compared to the green nose. I used a combination of the kit supplied stencil decals (which performed brilliantly as well) and the Lifelike stencils in certain locations but opted not to apply all of them. Once the decals had dried completely, they were sealed with several light coats of Tamiya X-35 Semi-Gloss thinned with Mr. Colour Leveling Thinner. With decalling complete, the weathering process began with the application of a panel line was using Ammo of Mig Panel Line Wash Blue/ Black. I worked in sections allowing the product to dry for about thirty minutes before removing the excess with a paper towel and cotton buds. Of all the new products released in recent memory, this has to be one of my favourites for its ease of use and the results it produces. Once the enamel-based wash had dried, I airbrushed a very thin mix of Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black and XF-64 Red Brown with an Iwata Custom Micron-C airbrush over selected panel lines. Exhaust staining was also applied using this mix applied in very thin layers, being careful not to overdo it. As a final step, Ammo by Mig Oilbrusher Starship Filth oil paint was applied randomly around the wing roots,
42
wing access panels, and underside near the oil cooler and allowed to set for about an hour. The oil paint was then blended and streaked using a combination of cotton buds, a brush dampened with mineral spirits, and my finger tip. To wrap things up, the blade antenna, landing gear and doors, canopy, drop tanks and spinner/ propeller assembly were added to the model. Material was carefully removed from the inside of the canopy to get it to sit properly on the rear deck and cockpit sidewalls. This is an important and often overlooked step by modellers as the P-51 canopy on most models seems to get squeezed together to be flush with the fuselage sides and the rear end hangs out in the breeze
While still soft, the oil paint from the Oilbrusher can be blended and moved around the model’s surface with a Q-Tip to achieve a realistically smudged effect
without touching the fuselage. A study of period photographs of the real aircraft reveals this is not the case; the canopy, when opened and slid aft, is wider than the fuselage and the rear rests almost on top of the fuselage. As a final touch I added an Eduard Brassin rear-view mirror complete with the mirrored surface punched from a sheet of Bare Metal foil. And with that, the model was complete! Airfix has definitely raised the bar in recent years with their kit releases and the P-51D is one of their best yet. The engineering, ease of assembly, and countless options make it a very appealing subject and attractive model to boot. I’m happy to add the model to my collection and look forward to building another! ●

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk Tamiya's fantastic, new-tool Messerschmitt Bf109G-6 in 1:48 is a superb kit straight from the box (TMMI 268, February 2018) but of course, Eduard always like to offer some extras that have the potential to take the model that bit further. The main release for the kit is a whole new cockpit in resin and photoetched brass that replaces all the kit-parts. Enhanced and additional details have been added to all surfaces and where an extra touch of refinement and delicacy is required, two photoetched frets are provided for the rudder pedals, trim wheels and drive chains, canopy armour plus instrument panel and seat harnesses (pre-painted). You might think this is an exercise in 'gilding the lily' but when you take a close-up look at the new parts, you'll be instantly convinced. Eduard have also created a pair of replacement 'UmrüstBausätze' (Rüstsätze) underwing gondolas for the MG151 20mm cannons which, unlike the kit-supplied parts include interior detail, in case you want to leave the gun maintenance panels open. One item not included in the Tamiya kit is the rear-fuselage mounted radio compartment and this is a neat detail to add to a Bf109. Not much is visible through the radio access aperture but it's a satisfying thing to add. Other upgrade items for the Tamiya's Gustav are exhaust outlets with hollow tips, main and tail-wheels, Rüstsätze WGR.21 underwing rocket pods, engine cowling gun barrels and two sets of canopy masks. It all adds up to quite a package for this already-excellent model and if you really want to take your Gustav to the next level, these upgrades will set you on the right path. FRIULMODEL, HUNGARY
www.friulmodel.com Friulmodel track sets are almost an essential purchase for many AFVs kits and their range is vast, covering tanks from World War One right up to the modern day. MiniArt's 1:35 US D7 bulldozer is the recipient of seventy-two links in the company's familiar malleable metal alloy and they are finely detailed, if quite fiddly to join together. The operation is suggested in two stages; assemble the inner 'chain' directly onto the model than add each tread plate individually. As is often the case, you'll get the hang of it just as you add the last part. Also new in 1:35 is a pack for the Challenger 2's late-type tracks, 180 links for the Hungarian 44M TAS heavy tank/44M Rohamlöveg assault gun (Hobbyboss) and the Marder 1A5 (Revell). The sets will need a little clean-up before assembly but are basically easy to use and the results are potentially ultra realistic. 1:35 BULLDOZER (ATL-178) US MILITARY B CHALLENGER 2 LATE-TYPE TRACK (ATL-179) 44M TAS/44M ROHAMLÖVEG (ATL-180) MARDER 1 A5 (ATL-181)

AMMO BY MIG, SPAIN
www.migjimenez.com Two new enamel-paint colour washes have been released by AbM and for once, they are pleasingly basic! Neutral Wash is a warm-grey fluid that will be ideal for applying a general layer of grime over a subject without affecting its base colour, and Black Wash is ideal for deepening panel lines on armour, aircraft and other subjects. Pre-mixed to perfect and easy to use. Also new from AbM are two acrylic pastes for creating instant texture on diorama groundwork. 'Sand' is pretty obvious; it's a pale yellow paste with a sand-like grit in suspension. 'Asphalt' is more interesting in that it can potentially form a road surface for a diorama (1:35 and larger, bearing in mind the particle size) and could be ideal for car modellers wishing to create a display base for their models. Both can be applied by brush, but use a cheap throw-away because you'll never get the grit out of the bristles! FRENCH MAIN BATTLE TANK LECLERC SERIES 2 www.hobbyco.net SCALE: 1:35 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, PC, WS ITEM NO.35362 Tamiya originally released this kit in 2005 and oddly, it had castmetal road wheels back then. Otherwise, the kit is the same as the original release and that’s just fine because it is a supremely refined production, with modern levels of detail in a user-friendly format. Decals are provided for four machines, three in threetone NATO (OTAN) camouflage and one in a desert scheme, Qatar 1998. Other details include tow cable, external fuel tank and brackets. Commander’s post features rotating sight and a French Army commander figure.
Wonderful detail throughout, great-looking tank and better now with plastic roadwheels Despite being thirteen years old, little if anything to criticise here

BANDVAGN BV 206S ARTICULATED ARMOURED PERSONNEL CARRIER W/INTERIOR www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.2083 This new release from Takom came somewhat out of the blue, albeit in a very welcome manner! It depicts the Swedishdesigned Bv206S, an armoured personnel carrier variant of the Bv206, which provides protection for the occupants from small arms fire. It is in service with the armed forces of France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Greece and Singapore. It’s only a little thing, indicated by the diminutive size of the kit-box, but Takom have really packed in the detail. It comes with a detailed interior for the tractor section and crew seats for the trailer.
An unusual but very cool subject choice, packed with detail Again, with Takom’s recent releases, the illustrations in the instruction booklet are tiny and hard to read without magnification

This classic of the 1980s race scene has an irresistible, old-school look and the kit does it full justice. All main parts are moulded in white with a plated sprue for the lighting parts and of course a clear sprue for the windows and headlight lenses. Also in the box is a fret of PE metal for the intake grilles, brake-disc faces, bodyclips and the hardware for the seat harnesses. A length of fine red ribbon is provided for the webbing, an extremely good addition. The included livery is for the Jimmy McRae/Rob Arthur car from the 24hr Uren Van Ieper race of 1984 and even comes with the mis-matched wheels.
An absolute classic rally car and Belkits have captured the ‘80s bodyshell shape perfectly. Lovely additions in the box too Curbside kit, which is not necessarily a bad thing

Not one but two of these delectable models is provided in the box, along with six markingsoptions from the unit across various theatres of operation. The kit itself comes with multiple ‘physical’ options so we find choices of fuselage halves and wings, so the instructions must be studied to ensure the correct parts are used. The detail in this kit is astonishing, with fine rivet lines on the airframe and a delicious cockpit interior with pre-painted instrument panel and side consoles.

MIG-21PFM IN NORTH VIETNAMESE SERVICE LIMITED EDITION www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, PCM, WS ITEM NO.11115 Making the ideal display-case adversary for Eduard’s Vietnam War Phantom II kits, this edition of Eduard’s award-winning MiG-21 kit comes with no less than four camouflage/markings options for wartime fighters plus another for a post-war machine. We have reviewed the base kit before, its detail and refinement being lauded for its precision. The model comes with an excellent depiction of the cockpit, formed from injectionmoulded components and supplemented with pre-painted instrument panel, side consoles, pilot harness and more. The markings range for MiG-21s operating from 1968 to 1979 (the post-war machine) with natural metal, field-painted green, green camouflaged and sand/ brown finished airframes, so plenty of variety.
TRUMPETER, CHINA
DEHAVILLAND DH.110 SEA VIXEN FAW.2 www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.05808 The DeHavilland Sea Vixen seems to have a special place in the hearts of many modellers and even though it’s a pretty odd-looking machine, one can see why. Trumpeter have released this machine in 1:48 and from our in-box inspection they have done an impressive job of it. Airfix have, of course, previously released their own kit of the same subject around eight years ago. Here, Trumpeter have opted for no wing-fold option which will please some modellers and disappoint others. On one hand it eases assembly but the aircraft does look interesting with the outer wings folded and it will take up less space too. The airframe sports recessed rivets and the cockpit is well represented, even if the seats are a tad basic.
Eduard’s 1:48 MiG-21 is a excellent kit and in Vietnam markings it really shines
Odd but interesting subject choice that has plenty of display case ‘presence’
Not necessarily a quick build due to many small parts
No wing-fold option will frustrate some, please others

BOEING CHINOOK HC.2/CH-47F www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WM, WS ITEM NO.2779 The fifth incarnation of Italeri’s 1:48 Boeing Chinook heavy-lift helicopter represents the HC.2/ CH-47F variant. It comes with new parts for this late rework of the iconic early ‘60s machine, including sensors for the three schemes provided in the box (RAF, US Army, JASDF) plus new decals of course. The mouldings are very sound and the outline of this big, twin-rotor beast are well captured, however the exterior panel lines are quite deep and wide while there is no depiction of the airframe’s noticeable rivet lines, a missed opportunity. Still, it will build into a great-looking model.

T
o better appreciate the originality of this bike, I will briefly retrace its technical history. After the retirement in 1981 of the 125cc Minarelli bike piloted by the World Champion Angel Nieto (Brach Model kit BM-VR05) and second in the classification Loris Reggiani (BM-VR06), the racing department was transferred to Sesto San Giovanni just outside Milan. Under the new insignia of Garelli it continuing to dominate the 125cc class, winning forty-two GPs and six championship titles in a row ending his career in 1988. The substantial differences between the bikes could be appreciated in 1983, when a new fairing was adopted plus the characteristic rear tail – specially designed in the wind tunnel and a little ungraceful – but allowed the bike to gain 15Km/h at the same power! The engine was able to develop 46hp at a staggering 14,500 rpm. With this bike, Nieto won the world title both in 1983 and in 1984 (BM-VR04). In 1985, Garelli won in the colours of Team Italia (BM-VR03) with a consequent change of livery, the classic black/red becoming white with tricolour stripes. The engine was further enhanced and while maintaining the same carburettors now developed 49hp at 14,600 rpm and reached 230Km/h (142mph). The declared unladen weight was just 78kg (172lb) and only increased 0.5Kg compared to the previous year's version. With this fireball, Fausto Gresini became an official rider, managing to immediately conquer his first world title and then classify according the following year and reconfirm himself as World Champion in 1987, again on a Garelli.
STARTING THE MODEL
The kit, as mentioned before, is full of detail and is of excellent quality; all the parts are finely cast in resin with steel parts plus photo-etched components. The primary work of preparation for assembly does not require any particular intervention; the pieces should only be sanded and finished at the pouring stubs. When the work is done, all the parts must be washed thoroughly with a degreasing detergent (liquid soap) using a soft-bristled brush. After an thorough rinse, it is advisable to dry the pieces with compressed air through a 'dry' airbrush and I also recommend the use of latex gloves to avoid traces of grease and sweat, a good approach to achieve flawless results when final painting. The next step is to apply an undercoat on all the castings using Tamiya White Fine Surface Primer and after drying, the appropriate colour for each part and the pre-assembled parts can then be applied. For the Garelli's futuristic frame – made entirely of aluminium as is the rear swingarm – I used Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf, while for the engine (finely detailed as in reality), crankcase, cylinder head as well as the water pump, I preferred to airbrush different shades of Alclad 2 aluminium (ALC-102, ALC-105, ALC-119) following photographic references of the real subject. For the clutch cover I used Burnt Iron (Mr Hobby 214) and for the carburettors, Alclad 2 Pale Burnt Metal (ALC-104). Radiator, wheel rims and front fork legs, were painted with Tamiya TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black.

This hand-held device could save a significant amount of money – not to mention frustration – if you’re one of those people who habitually bends the tip of their airbrush needle. It incorporates a series of abrasive surfaces internally across which a bent or damaged needle can be repaired; the robustly moulded case ensures that the needle is held at the correct angle throughout the process. It’s an interesting idea and we’ll be trying it out on our next bent needle...

Nearing completion; the engine has been fitted into the frame and the front-forks will soon be in place too.
Denuded of its cowlings, the 1985 125cc Garelli has a very distinctive look, thanks to its monocoque construction
The dials and their cabling are being fitted here; tweezers are essential!
THE COWLING V FINISHING For the seat fairing and cowling I used Tamiya White Fine
Surface Primer. Why did I use primer to make the right shade of white? For this subject, it seemed to be the perfect choice to achieve the right shade. Also, the real bike's cowling was made of fibre-glass and the nitro-based paint applied without a primer for weight-saving, which meant the top-coat would dry with a semi-gloss finish rather than deep gloss, so the Tamiya aerosol worked out perfectly. The final effect was recreated using the Tamiya Compound pastes. For the inner part of the bodywork panels, I simulated the yellowish finish with alcohol-based inks that I faded with the help of a cotton wool soaked in Tamiya X20 thinners. (You can also use common alcohol). The connectors and links of the chain were painted with a silver base and subsequently over-painted with Ruß Schwarz 452 from Mr Hobby Aqueous Hobby Color. After the painting and assembly work, I detailed all the components with the various instrumentation accessories, electrical wiring and lastly I applied the decals. I thank Luciano Brach for giving me the honour and pleasure of assembling and giving life to this umpteenth masterpiece, twelve times smaller than the real bike! ●

PANZERKAMPFWAGEN V PANTHER SD.KFZ.171, VISUAL MODELERS GUIDE VOL.2
ENRIQUE CALDERÓN GONZÁLEZ www.migjimenez.com With the new Panther kits on release and still coming, some references on the basic structures and fittings will be welcome, so modellers can add weld seams, bolt-heads, cast textures and more to their builds. This new title from AMMO by Mig provides just that; the majority of the soft-bound, sixty-two+ pages being taken up with colour images of surviving examples in various museums and collections. The ausf D, A and G are covered, with additional sections on zimmerit patterns, a page of colour swatches plus some small but very attractive colour profiles that reveal the plethora of camouflage schemes applied to these vehicles. Not the definitive guide to the Panther tank, but very handy all the same.
251 HALF-TRACK
DAVID DOYLE, AMPERSAND GROUP www.casematepublishing.co.uk The WW2 German Sd.Kfz.251 half-track is a ubiquitous design that was seen in all main theatres of operation throughout the conflict. It is a much-modelled subject and has been released in kitform by Tamiya, Dragon, AFV Club and others over the years. So, what better than a beautifully presented, hardback volume packed with references? This author is best known for his thorough and clear walk-arounds of preserved vehicles so we were a little surprised (pleasantly) that the contents consist entirely of black and white photos from WW2, not that we’re complaining. Starting with the earliest Sd.Kfz.251 A and working right through to the latewar machines with infrared night-sights, we are treated to mostly full-page reproductions of wartime imagery, all printed on high-grade paper in excellent quality. It’s a real feast for the eyes and well worth adding to one’s reference library. 168+ pages, hardback.

Uniquely shaped they are provided in several grits (100/180/220/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit). They are long lasting and washable, which will allow them to be used to their maximum potential with the minimum of waste. Thinny Sticks Our range of Thinny Stick Sanders have been developed specifically to help modellers get to those hard to sand areas on all genres of models. They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

I
absolutely love visiting the Shizuoka Hobby Show - it’s great to see new kits on the trade stands and to chat with friends in the industry and individual modellers who have made the trip for their own enjoyment. But the really fun thing for me are the sights, sounds and (food) smells that are to be found in and around the ‘Twin Messe’ venue’s other areas; the flea market, food stalls and the walkways (with JGSDF choc-chip cookies on sale, pic right), always rammed with visitors clutching bags stuffed with catalogues, stickers and, of course, kits! So here’s a spread of images that will hopefully offer an insight of what goes on outside of the main Hobby Show arenas. ● Editor’s Choice will return next issue
