New Arrivals PLATZ, JAPAN 1:144 F-4E PHANTOM II US AIR FORCE ITEM FC-5:2400 www.platz-hobby.com Not one but two whole kits will be found in the box here, an extra appealing touch and a frequent bonus in 1:144 it seems. The mouldings carry recessed panel lines, perhaps a little too visible for this scale, but their appearance will diminish under paint and decals. Decals for two, three-colour SEA camouflaged Phantoms and one white/red machine are supplied.
8
A brief look at kits that have recently arrived at TMMI HQ!
PLATZ, JAPAN 1:72 JASDF T-33 HEADQUARTERS FLIGHT GROUP 40TH ANNIVERSARY 1997 ITEM AC-20:2200 • www.platz-hobby.com Platz initially released their T-33 Shooting Star around five years back and it’s still a lovely little kit. It features finely recessed panel lines and a more than adequate two-seat cockpit with dial decals for the instrument panels (which feature raised bezels). The new decals are extremely colourful and depict a JASDF machine for the 1997
DRAGON, HONG KONG 1:35 VOLLKETTENAUFKLÄRER 38 ITEM 6815 • www.hobbyco.net Dragon have come up with another of their very interesting Jagdpanzer 38(t) conversions here, one that mounts the 7.5cm L/24 main gun (from StuG.III ausf.A) atop its hull in an open configuration. A fighting compartment interior is supplied and the gun breech is fully detailed, as it is very much on show. A fascinating version of the Hetzer.
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 SSW D.III ITEM NO.8256 • www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk The ProfiPACK edition of an Eduard kit is the one to go for, as it will come with the extra detailing goodies that we all love. In the case of the Siemens-Schuckert Werke D.II this means photo-etched details and pre-cut masks for the painting of the wheels/tyres. The decal sheet is magnificent, providing lozenge camouflage and ribbing tapes.
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 BF109G-6 ERLA ITEM NO.84142 www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk This is Eduard’s ‘Weekend Edition’ of their totally re-tooled Gustav and it means that is does not contain any photo-etched parts, canopy masks or resin castings. The theory is that it’s a quick, weekend-build and this is certainly do-able, but Eduard put so much detail into their models that the cockpit alone might take you a couple of days!
PLATZ, JAPAN 1:72 T-2 CCV JASDF AIR DEVELOPMENT TEST WING ITEM AC-19:2800 • www.platz-hobby.com This is Platz’s lovely Mitsubishi T-2 jet kit with a modified wing set-up and canard winglets and its starting to look like the Angel Interceptor from the TV series UFO. It’s a nicely detailed kit with fully rendered exterior surfaces and a decent cockpit too. The orange-colour flashes for this test machine are included on the decal sheet, along with a ton of data stencils.
WARHAMMER 40,000 FROM REVELL, EUROPE SPACE MARINE BIKE ATTACK, BUILD + PAINT SERIES 1 www.revell.de/en In the box here we have the Space Marine Bike which is simply moulded in two halves, with two-part wheel/tyre trapped between the halves during assembly. The detail is rather good and will respond to some creative painting techniques, plus weathering and ‘battle damage’. A rider figure plus a standing warrior are also supplied and again, there’s some great detail to paint.
ITALERI, ITALY 1:24 VW1303S BEETLE ITEM NO.3708 • www.hobbyco.net The Beetle is an enduring classic and this kit does a reasonable job of capturing it in plastic. The bodyshell is nicely done but the engine cover looks a little to prominent to us, with too much of a ‘hump’. The mouldings appear to originate from the 1970s Imai kit and so are a little basic, but it will build into a decent-looking VW all the same.

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:144 MIG-21 MF IN CZECHOSLOVAK SERVICE DUAL COMBO ITEM NO.4434 • www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk Eduard’s expertise with kits of the MiG-21 is peerless (one in 1:32 would be nice, hint hint) and this prowess extends right down to 1:144. In the small box here we have a pair of MiG-21 MFs with markings for Czechoslovak service and the detailing is marvellous. Underwing stores are supplied, as is a detailed cockpit with ejector seat; decals for one of seven aircraft are provided.
REVELL, EUROPE 1:144 BOEING 727-100 GERMANIA ITEM NO.03248 • www.revell.de/en To create this release, Revell have exhumed their 1960s kit of the Boeing 727 and added a set of rather attractive Germania decals, which are quite fetching in two-tone green. The mouldings carry raised panel lines and rivets (!) plus solid-moulded passenger windows but shape-wise it looks like 727, and with the new markings and a little sanding it could look quite good.
DRAGON, HONG KONG 1:35 BEFEHLS PANTHER AUSF.G ITEM 6947 www.hobbyco.net The Befehls (command) Panther makes an interesting for a model kit as it is necessarily fitted with a host of extra radio aerials for communication with other vehicles in the unit. In this case, the Panther variant is the ausf.G and Dragon have used parts from their superb existing kit for the purpose. The modified main gun mantlet is provided, along with the star antenna and appropriate decals.
EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 FW190A-5 PROFIPACK ITEM NO.70116 www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk Eduard’s 1:72 Fw190A-5 ProfiPACK comes with photo-etched metal parts and pre-cut canopy masks, the latter making the modeller’s life easier and offering a solution to creating tidy canopy panel lines. Two sprues of airframe parts are provided, allowing the incorporation of different of physical features. Five decal options are included, plus airframe data stencilling.
WARHAMMER 40,000 FROM REVELL, EUROPE SPACE MARINE HEAVY ASSAULT, BUILD + PAINT SERIES 1 www.revell.de/en Revell have teamed-up with Games Workshop to bring us some fabulous Warhammer 40,000 figures and kits and they have been issued at some great prices so they are accessible to all. In this release we have five Space Marines and the mighty Dreadnought which is large and chunky.
WARHAMMER 40,000 FROM REVELL, EUROPE SPACE ORK BLASTABIKE, BUILD + PAINT SERIES 1 www.revell.de/en This set features an Ork Blastabike and rider, plus an Ork Nob fighter and both are packed with crazy character. The injectionmoulded parts are in green in this set, which is good for the Orks but the bike will need painting orange/red, with metallic details. The pack includes three pots of Citadel paint plus one of their excellent paint brushes so that lovely detail can be painted up with precision.
ITALERI, ITALY 1:24 LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH 5000 QUATTROVALVOLE ITEM NO.3683 • www.hobbyco.net The Countach is a genuine supercar; completely impractical with an outrageous design and big (for the time) performance. Italeri’s kit comes with a superb bodyshell moulded in white and a very decent replica of the V12 engine too; careful painting using references will help the detail really pop here.
KAJIKA, CHINA 1:700 IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY BATTLECRUISER KONGO 1914 ITEM NO.KM70001 • www.flyhawkmodel.com Under the brand of Kajika, this waterline kit arrived from Flyhawk Models so we can perhaps assume the mouldings originate from them. The kit parts are stunningly well detailed, easily to the level of resin kits. The delicacy of the smallest on-deck parts has to be seen to be believed and although no PE is included, the model will still look very in-scale without it. TMMI 259 May 2017

t’s the ‘60s and auto racing is still one of the most popular and entertaining sports around, captivating crowds and thrilling fans. Formula 1 certainly leads the way in this respect but equally – if not at times even more so – do the various
championship races for Sport and Prototypes, with its famously long race times, such as the legendary 24 hours of Le Mans and Daytona. Mechanical masterpieces and the jewels in the crown of many a great auto manufacturers, these vehicles are often synonymous with formidable aesthetic beauty.
Shelby Cobra, Porsche, Ford and obviously Ferrari. Almost certainly as a response to Ford’s powerhouse performances on race tracks across the globe, Ferrari develops the P series, which results in the creation of the marvellous 330 P4, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful vehicles ever to come out of the Maranello house. 1967 could be called ‘the year of the racing car’ when, on the famous Daytona track, three Ferrari Ps rode across the finishing line side by side. The P4 number 24, by Lorenzo Bandini and Chris Amon, in the lead. It is precisely this context of extraordinary human ingenuity and sporting productivity that I chose as the backdrop for my latest model-making project. It marks a new chapter in my personal journey of research and interpretation of mechanical subjects across the ages. Technological hybrids
that take cues from history and re-imagined through a Ucronic lens, a Retro-futuristic aesthetic, not exactly science fiction, but rather an alternate reality, wherein past, present and future blend to create all kinds of vehicles, be they real, plausible or even impossible. This time, I was making an even bigger gamble... The choice of vehicle was easy: the Ferrari 330 P4, symbol of those legendary races and aesthetic marvels, already sufficiently ‘sci-fi’ in its design to suit my purposes. I decided to accentuate and exaggerate the P4’s prime vocation of speed by crossing it with an aeroplane motor from the same historical era: the turbine engine from the famous vertical take-off capable Harrier jet. As usual I tried to give my ‘hybrid’ as realistic a look as possible, not just aesthetically but also from a mechanical standpoint. Consequently, in addition to designing the concept on paper, I set about learning all I could about period Ferrari cars and, of course, planes! This in-depth research also confirmed was is a now long-standing and profound conviction of mine. In my model-making method, artistic license

CONSTRUCTION
The scale: I chose 1:8 so as to allow greater detailing and increasing my chances of finding plenty of aftermarket technical materials. Taking it as read that I should leave the chassis as recognisable as possible, this time I began working from the inside out, starting with the motor, trying all the while to afford some logic to this mechanical Frankenstein’s monster and overall to transform the Rolls Royce Pegasus into a Ferrari turbine, which included the addition of a red cap that would immediately recall those of the famous Prancing Horse. Once I had completed the planning on paper, I began constructing the central body of the turbine: all the various sections are composed using disks of turned Plexiglass, in various diameters, in order to have a sturdy, smooth structure. All the applied mouldings are made with
styrene profiles and plastic-card elements. To remain as faithful as possible to the original motor’s architecture, I immediately began inserting the centring and tubular structures that connect the engine to the frame. All the ribs are cut from Forex and profiled with sheets of styrene and Evergreen. All the tubular structures (there ten different diameter tubes, depending on their structural function) are constructed either in styrene or aluminium, sourced from Albion Alloys’ inexhaustible range. All the joints are made of turned brass or with smaller plastic-card components. The rest of the motor is recreated to scale in Forex, PVC, Milliput and Epowood. For the mechanical detail, considering the large scale, I made great use of the technical minutiae (screws, nuts and bolts) by the American company Modelmotorcars as well as materials from the British company Hiroboy. Once I had completed the main structure of the motor, principal accessories and supports, I went on to construct the main conduits,
namely the exhausts for the adjustable jets necessary for vertical take-off (made by modifying some hydraulic tubes) and the frontal exhausts needed for air intake, refined with a fibreglass-effect texture.

DRIVER OR PILOT’S STATION
One of the components that definitely required the most work was the cockpit. The idea was to highlight the mix of race car and aeroplane. Therefore, alongside the horizontallysegmented leather seat, the aluminium and leather steering wheel and the chrome metal gearbox (all classic and unmistakable ‘60s Ferrari design features) I designed and constructed a complex aeronauticstyle dashboard. The instrument quadrants were designed using Photoshop and photographic reference, then printed on paper for decals (as were all the technical plates placed on the frame and in the engine compartment. Each instrument also received its own transparent PVC screen and bezel, made using photo-etched metal. Once I had completed the frame and the base for all the mechanical

on the chassis. Due to the complexity of the shapes that I now had to work with, I decided to use a 3D design program, to guarantee high precision in all the sections. Adopting a now tried and tested technique, I made the body shell out of resin, modelled on a polystyrene template – dense but easy

to cut, shape and sand – while keeping an eye on the measurements. Once I had obtained the desired shape, I covered the polystyrene with a layer of wood putty, for sealing. The resulting parts were then sanded down and refined by hand until they had a completely smooth surface, subsequently covered with a generous two-part clear gloss finish. Having finished the shell (after lengthy sanding and smoothing) I cut, separated and emptied
it. I then cut out the apertures (cockpit, bonnet, radiator and door) trying to be as precise as possible and so avoid adjustments later on. Work on the body, with all its curves and sinuous lines, was slow-going and extremely delicate, especially when trying to keep the various components together. Once the frame and body were perfectly aligned, I moved on to add all the external (air intake and exhaust vents, fuel flaps and various slots) and internal
details (stiffening ribs, grills and closed parts).
PAINTING
The painting process was often undertaken in parallel to construction. In general I would say the sequence went as follows: motor and mechanical parts, frame and casings, internal sections and cockpit, chassis. All components were given either one or two coats of grey and white Tamiya primer. The dashboard and other internal parts were
The idea with the cockpit was to combine the look of a race car with an aeroplane. Alongside the ribbed leather seat, the aluminium and leather steering wheel and the chrome metal gearbox the author designed and constructed a complex aeronautic-style dashboard

instead given a primer coat of Army Painter’s Chaos Black. To create the effect of different types of aluminium and non-varnished metals, I masked the various sections and panels, using different bases (gloss black, night blue, dark brown, all from Tamiya’s range) that I then covered with varying final colours from the Alclad II catalogue. All the chromatic effects of heating on the metal surfaces were realised with several layers of extremely diluted transparent Tamiya paints, along with Gold Alclad II and blue printing ink. All the chromed parts were given a glossy black Tamiya base and a Alclad Chrome finish. The body merits a whole different explanation. Once I had completed all the internal and external parts of the body, I set about applying the primer. In my opinion a significant factor in the quality of the overall painting job, when dealing with gloss paints, is the primer’s finish. In fact, after letting it dry for longer than the usual time, so as to guarantee that it was fully cured, I sanded it down with progressively finer sheets of grade paper (from 800 to 2000), until I obtain as smooth a surface as possible. For years now I’ve been using Tamiya’s Fine Grey primer – on this occasion, I also used White superfine. I used
a single coat of Tamiya Aluminium only on the forward fins and around the front air intake vent – sections which would encounter the most frontal wear, so as to later reveal the metal surface through scrapes. After completing the perfect base coat I applied the riveting! I chose to apply it after the smoothing of the primer for two simple reasons: firstly, the difficulty I would have encountered trying to smooth the surface down with the rivets already in place, and secondly to avoid adding to the surface thickness of the paint, which would have thrown off the proportions. The rivets (around a thousand of them) were made using a punch and die and a 0.5mm sheet of tin. They were glued on with the German Wiko Super Glue, to avoid them falling off during the final polishing. Having completed the lengthy process of riveting, I finally began the painting. As always, when working on a body, I used the exceptional British-made Zero Pants (www.hiroboy.com) which guarantee a truly refined level of pigmentation and extraordinary quality, as well as absolute fidelity to the true tonality of the both the vehicle and the desired year. The finish, once dry, is extremely smooth and opaque. With these I achieved the full red colour, the white areas and the race numbers in black, masked with frisket film.
All parts of the chassis, after a week-long drying process, received further smoothing using a lightly abrasive carpentry sponge. To obtain a truly glossy, smooth and sturdy finish, I used transparent Clearcoat gloss (also by Zero Paints); a two-part material which includes both a hardener and thinner. This splendid product can be easily and safely used over Tamiya or Gunze acrylics. Once the components are mixed, the product can still be used (as a spray) for about fifteen minutes, all the time necessary for a few light coats with an airbrush at medium-low pressure (I recommend using a mask and filters to avoid problems). After the usual waiting time for drying, it was time for the most boring but definitely most rewarding part of the painting process: polishing. Each painted component was smoothed with Micro Mesh Alclad cloths, with grades ranges from 1800 up to 12000. After this treatment, all ‘orange peel’ traces were completely removed. The final touch, as always, was the use of three abrasive Tamiya compounds, with progressive thinness, a final coating of Tamiya Modelling Wax (using cotton gloves when handling treated parts).
WEATHERING EFFECTS
All the mechanical parts, fixed or moving, once assembled, received a highly diluted wash of

The heat staining on the metal surfaces was created with layers of diluted Tamiya clear paints along with Gold Alclad II and blue printing ink
For the engine compartment and especially the underbody, I chose a particularly noticeable level of ware and ageing, while I gave the chassis a finish that more closely resembled that of a plane: thus I merely applied some selective washes on all the
rivets and panels, some light scratches and scrape marks, especially on the front part, and a light, low-pressure airbrush dusting, with highly diluted acrylics. For the wash of the underbody plate and the retractable, amortized ‘legs’, I used Mig’s Dark Wash and
Cold Grey Wash, as well as, in some parts, blank and sepia ink. The smoke traces were realised using Mig’s Black Smoke and the appropriate Pigment Fixer, in addition to some Tamiya Matt Black, highly diluted with alcohol, sprayed at low pressure, and generous

CONCLUSIONS
If I’m completely honest, this is by far the longest and most complex project I have ever worked on. Around 18 months of work, hours of planning and
study, and several thousand constructed auto pieces, all to give life to my… creation. That said, I am extremely proud of the finished product and incredibly grateful for the level of international praise it has received so far. I don’t know when or if I’ll next undertake another
project of similar scale and required effort, but finishing this model has certainly given me the confidence to continue on my journey of historical re-interpretation –
started some years ago now – and allowed me to raise my technical standards that much higher.

KIT PREVIEW ZVEZDA 1:48 MESSERSCHMITT BF109G-6 ● KIT NO.4816
ZVEZDA 1:48 BF109G-6 GUSTAV Z vezda’s new-tool 1:48 Messerschmitt Bf109G-6 has arrived, so it’s time for our initial look in the box; by no means an exhaustive review of course, more of a rummage through the sprues. The model comes with an extensively detailed engine, featuring at least thirty-six parts that include individual exhaust stubs and ancillaries. Whether or not you choose to display the engine by leaving open the cowling panels, you’ll still need to assemble it as it supports the forward cowling (and obviously the propeller) plus the aforementioned exhausts. Optional lower wing panels are provided to allow the fitment of the MG151 20mm gun pods, plus the option for a three different types of central mounts for a fuel tank or two sizes of bomb. Another included option
rarely seen these days is a retracted undercarriage. The airframe carries very retrained and convincing detail. Overall then, a surprisingly involved kit that offers some different features to Eduard’s sublime Gustav kits. ● MN

taleri’s new release of the marvellously ungainlylooking H-21 Shawnee is a new-tool production and comes with some neat features. The rear cabin is fully appointed with seating, textured insulation on the ‘ceiling’ and bulkhead and a detailed depiction of the radial engine and its
drive shafts. The airframe exterior is rendered with a visually acceptable level of riveting, although the circular windows’ frames and their rivets are slightly too prominent; this should be remedied by Eduard’s forthcoming PE set (below left). The only disappointment with
this kit is the main canopy framing ‘strips’ are noticeably too broad which makes the glazing panels too small with very rounded corners when they should be squared-off; a near impossible fix, but perhaps could be reduced with careful painting. ● MN

amiya released the 1:35 version of this machine back in the mid-1990s and it was a great kit. Now it has a smaller brother in 1:48 and it’s an equally attractive production. Of course, it uses existing Tiger I parts (suspension, wheels, tracks, lower hull) with new parts for the
revised upper hull, huge casemate, gun and other structures. Apart from the prototype(s), it seems that all eighteen of the vehicles complete utilised Tiger I hulls with zimmerit, and to tackle this, Tamiya have also released a sticker sheet with the rigged pattern printed on. Of course, the modeller
can also apply their own zimmerit with putty if they choose - fiddly but satisfying. The link-andlength tracks make life easy and come with the correctly sagged upper run moulded in. The interior of the 38cm rocket launcher tube/barrel even has the rifling moulded in it, a very nice touch. ● MN

This is an interesting hybrid kit from Studio 27, which utilises Tamiya’s 1:20 Wolf WR1 1977 (20064) as a basis, with an extensive set of photo-etched parts (rear wing end-plates, radiator faces, foot pedals, seat harness hardware and more) cast metal components, seat harness ribbon and new decals, all packed with the injection-moulded sprues within the very attractively designed kit box. It’s a very professional presentation with a detailed instruction supplement showing where the new parts go. ometimes I feel surfing the internet and community sites takes too much time away from modelling. I often regret the hours spent in front of the monitor, but sometimes I am glad that I kept browsing. Lot of inspiration can be obtained from internet and modelling communities. In the summer of 2013 my remote friend shared on Facebook his semi-finished robot model. For me this injection moulded 1:20 scale robot was absolutely new; I had never have seen anything similar to it and I loved it from the very first moment. So I wrote to my friend inquiring where could I get a model like this. The answer was quick; from Japan, naturally. Sadly these products of producer Bandai are really popular and there is a constant shortage of them, but finally I managed to purchase an AMT-09-RSC Scope Dog. (Editor's note; You can now order this and many other Bandai kits quickly and easily from Japan Cool; www.japan-cool.co.uk) When it arrived, the first surprise was the size of the box. It was huge! So big, that two 1:35 Tamiya IS-2 Stalin could fit in, and they are not small either. The artwork on the box is gorgeous and it suits to the model, showing a 'real' robot with weathered painting, standing on debris in front of a deep red background. From just looking at the box, I would have bought it anyway! Opening the box, I was a little shocked, because the twenty-two sprues were moulded in no less than nine different colours; light green, deep green, black, grey, flesh-coloured, white, brown, red and even transparent. The kit parts exceeded my expectations. The detail, engineering and the moulding of parts is typically Japanese, almost Tamiya-like. The manufacturer even paid
extra attention to not put sprue-joints on visible parts. The instruction manual is a complete book, which also contains a short history of the robot. The first few pages introduce the details of the model and the next twenty pages helps in construction, illustrated by beautiful drawings. Sadly the manual’s language is Japanese but the beautiful pictures and accurate drawings make things easy enough.
CONSTRUCTION
The building is almost a pushover. Most parts can be snapped out and fit perfectly. I started to put together the legs – that consist of about fifty parts – and only by the last parts I realized I had not used any glue. The kit contains three figures. One of them is in the fully prepared cabin, the others standing next to the robot. Sadly, the figures’ details are of a much lower quality than the other parts but I had no intention of using them anyway. I started the construction with the legs, continued with the upper abdomen, then the arms and finished with the head. All of it, including the cleaning up of parts took only two days. Because I wanted the head to appear closed, I left out all parts of its interior and built in only the necessary parts of the chassis. I did not like the huge gun in he robot’s hand either, as well as the plasma cannon on its left arm, so I did not build them in. After I roughly snapped the parts together, I dismantled it again. During painting it proved to be useful that I had not glued any of the parts, so I was able to paint each part separately.
PAINTING
In recent years I have seen items of plant machinery, many in yellow and mostly

in a heavily weathered condition. I wanted to reproduce this worn yellow colour on a model, but I had found no appropriate subject so far. I imagined how the originally green

robot might have looked like when painted 'CAT' yellow. But yellow painting on the whole surface would look monotonous, so I decided to paint the upper arms, the abdomen and upper legs
white, while the weapons would be green. After the final concept had been born, I started to paint immediately. When making very worn vehicles, I usually choose the hairspray
technique. I spray a layer of reddish brown under the base layer, which is the rust itself, and apply the hairspray then cover paint and abrade it back with water.

For the reddish-brown coating I mostly use Tamiya XF-64 Red Brown, because it adheres very well, making a good base for abrasion. In the current case I added a little grey to the brown,
which makes it look more metallic (1). Usually I use hairspray but now I choose the easier way and used the pre-mixed 'Heavy Chipping Fluid' product of AK Interactive (2).
So after the reddish-brown base I sprayed two layers of fluid on the parts and applied the yellow colour over this, which was Vallejo 70856 Ochre Brown (3). To brighten the middle panels
and display the light and shadow effects, I mixed and applied three further, lighter shades of Vallejo 70856 Ochre Brown, made with 70915 Deep Yellow and 70951 White (4). When the

Tamiya’s new-tool 1:48 F-14A Tomcat is a stunning kit, but people will always peer into the cockpit for a better look won’t they? To make sure the detail in there is beyond criticism, Eduard have release a twin-pack of ejector seats for the kit, in resin. The detail on the castings is breath-taking and with individually cast seat pads it’ll be easier to paint too. Photo-etched pull-handles and decals finish the job.

yellow paint dried, I started to wash it back with a rough brush and some tap water on the edges, where I wanted to show the wear (5). Thinner scratches were made with a toothpick. After the wearing I highlighted the bolts and other details with a lighter shade of the base colour, using a fine brush (6). In the case of the white parts, I did almost the same, except the base colour was not white but light grey. I faded it with white (7).
FURTHER WEATHERING
After that, oil-paint weathering begun. First I tarnished the dents and protruding parts with the mixture of burnt umber Van Dyck brown (8). After drying small, pitting was painted on the parts’ edges and around the bigger areas of wear with a piece of wet sponge (9). Then I applied deep red pigment on the still-wet oil paint with an old brush (10). This would add texture and depth to the rusty parts when fully dried. Oil paint dries slowly, so one
week of drying followed. The next step was preparing the oily streaks and rusty leaks (11). Van Dyck brown, burnt sienna and titan white oils were used. Finally the leaks were made with Mig Productions' Abteilung 502 'Engine Grease' and AK Interactive 'Fuel Stains' effects (12, 13). I imagined the weaponry with an aluminium surface, from which a coat green paint had worn off over time. For the aluminium colour I used Alclad 2 White Aluminium with the company's black primer under it (14). Then, more Heavy Chipping Fluid and finally the green top colour, which was mixed from Vallejo acrylics. To this I added 71025 Dark Yellow, 71010 Interior Green and 71001 White which were airbrushed in three shades on the surface (15). Again, tap
water, an old brush and toothpick were used to create the worn-off paint effect (16).
FINAL DETAILS
The moving protective shields of the legs were painted with red and white stripes, which created an eye-catching look. When I had finished the painting I re-assembled the model, then with a lead pencil I applied a metallic effect on the worn edges. Pleasant relaxation was the result of this easy to build model! I can only recommend to anyone, who is a little bored of historically authentic modelling, to try a project like this.

ince in the 1960s, the Japanese Ground Self Defence Force (JGSDF) has had a tradition of building top quality main battle tanks (MBTs), starting with the Type 61, then the revolutionary Type 74 and finally with the mighty Type 90. But during the 1990s, they realized that the Type 90 was just too heavy and cumbersome for quick movement over long distances. In an attempt to save both weight and materials, the JGSDF incorporated many modern elements to design the latest of the Japanese tanks, the Type 10.

The rubber colour was sprayed on the kit’s skirt areas, with the colour getting a lighter tone towards the bottom of the skirts
The first step in the painting process was to mix a suitable “rubber” colour for the tank’s skirts. For this task I mixed equal parts of Tamiya X1 Black, XF1 Flat Black, and XF24 Dark Grey
I now needed to find a good choice for the two colours of the distinctive JGSDF camouflage scheme. I decided to go with Gunze Sangyo acrylics; I used #48 Field Grey (2), and #310 Brown
Here is the base green (Gunze #48 Field Grey) and base brown (Gunze #310 Brown) applied to the road wheels To make an acrylic base colour for the tracks, I mixed a colour using paints from AMMO of Mig. I used #46 Matte Black, and #11 Dunkelgelb aus 44
After masking the running gear, I applied Gunze #48 Field Grey lightened with Tamiya XF71 Cockpit Green in several thin, misted coats

The Type 10 uses the newest modular armour, along with a very reliable automatic loading 120mm smoothbore gun. This reduces the need for a fourth crewman and can allow the designers to reduce the overall weight of the tank
34
without compromising the armour protection. The reduced weight also benefits the tank’s performance and speed. The Type 10 entered service with the JGSDF in 2010 and it continues to be upgraded, by virtue of its modular design, being able
to adapt to changing threats found on today’s battlefields.
TAMIYA’S 1:48 TYPE 10 KIT
The announcement of a Type 10 kit from Tamiya in 1:48 was a surprise to me, along with many other model builders, I am sure. I had
been wondering for some time whether Tamiya would bother to add any truly modern main battle tanks to their 1:48 line. I know they have a few Hummvees in the line, but I was starting to lose hope of ever seeing fully tracked AFVs in my

Over the course of a couple of afternoons, I masked off the areas to remain green, using putty and Tamiya tape
Before applying the brown to the camouflage, I tweaked the colour a little by mixing it with Tamiya XF72 Brown(JGSDF) and some XF1 Flat Black
The brown colour has been sprayed, with some high and low shadows added for tonal variety
The kit itself is a wealth of “ excellent quality mouldings, with no real flash to speak of, but all the parts carry gorgeously fine detail, on every surface.

All the masking has been removed, showing the hard edged camouflage. A protective gloss has also been applied
My weapons of choice for decal application. I simply went with one of the options in the kit, a tank from the 1st Company, 1st tank battalion
After liberal applications of Mr Hobby Mr. Mark Softer setting solution, the decals went down with no problems at all
This tactical call sign decals was a bit of artistic license, but I like the way it looks
To restore the model to a matte finish, I like to use acrylic matte from Vallejo. I make a mixture using 71.540 Matt Medium, 71.520 Matt Varnish, thinned with 71.361 Airbrush Thinner
After several thin, misted coats, the model has been toned down to a warm, almost matte finish, perfect for weathering!

Some of the smaller details were now picked out, such as this shovel, painted in Humbrol enamels and shaded with dry pigment powders
The initial oil steps are complete on the hull. However, there more steps to come
The wet stains were added by placing drops of enamel #1409 Fuel Stains (AMMO from Mig) with a fine-tipped brush around certain details and structures
With careful painting, the kit-supplied towing hawser looks acceptable. Note that the hull rear always gets the heaviest application of muck Small strips of scrap 35mm film negative were glued in place to make the ‘glass’ of the various optical lenses
Although much-maligned, Tamiya decals are typically very good and are easy to work with
38
The accumulation of dust and dirt on the model’s tracks and rubber skirts was created using both acrylic paint and dry pigment powders

Making the gun tube from a single piece of styrene was a good decision by Tamiya. It looks excellent after painting and weathering
More wet effects were added to the turret top, just to show wear and tear
To create the ‘glass’ optic lens of the CITV sight, I picked it out using Gunze Sangyo acrylic clear Green
The .50 cal Browning heavy machine gun in the Type10 kit is a far better moulding than all the older Tamiya kits. It looks great placed on the turret roof

Mini Review... ZERO PAINTS 2 PACK CLEARCOAT DIAMOND FINISH ITEM NO.ZP-3035 www.hiroboy.com
If you take your car modelling seriously, you’re already using Zero Paints, right? Even if you’re not, you’ll need a tough, high-gloss coating to finish off the bodyshell with and Zero Paints’ new ‘Diamond Finish’ clearcoat system is the one to go for. It comes in a modeller-friendly pack size in three parts; the lacquer, the hardener and thinners. The mixing ratio is clearly explained, as is the need to use the material in a fully ventilated area with a face-mask. Spray away!

V preferred scale. The arrival
of this kit was a real treat for me, as even though I have very limited knowledge of this tank, it hopefully foreshadows a day where we will see many more modern tanks in 1:48. One can always hope…. The kit itself is a wealth of excellent quality mouldings, with no real flash to speak of, but all the parts carry gorgeously fine detail, on every surface. There is no more white metal cast lower hulls, but they do include the small metal weights that are to be glued in a moulded bracket inside the lower hull, if the modeller chooses. Other notable details are the one-piece moulding of the 120mm gun tube and finally, Tamiya have updated their .50cal heavy machine gun in this kit, a welcome fix, as I have always found the .50cals to be a little weak in the 1:48 kits. At the time
Follow along and I will try my best to show what you can expect from this lovely model of Tamiya’s first truly modern tank kit. I just hope it will not be their last! ●
Tamiya even include in the kit’s decal sheet a tiny data stencil for the wind sensor mast
This tactical call number could be used for an exercise?
of writing, there were no aftermarket sets available to me, but once you read this, I know of two new sets from Hauler for this kit and I would recommend them both, but the kit is a jewel, even with no additions. The only thing I added to mine were some modest details, like bolt heads, and some missing grab handles.

TORO MODEL, POLAND
www.toro-model.home.pl Toro Model might sound like a Spanish manufacturer, but they are actually from Poland! They make superb resin figures across a range of eras and locations as their newest sets demonstrate. Two figures for the ‘Winter War 1939-40’ (Finland) have been created, one depicting the Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä (White Death) in a standing pose and another an ‘old soldier’ and a reindeer, the latter fully kitted out with military equipment. These two would make an excellent diorama, alongside Tamiya’s Finnish StuG.III perhaps. Two figures are presented from WW2, depicting a tank crewman in overalls, and a soldier from the Border Guard Corps, standing with fixed bayonet. From more recent times, we have a Polish Army Rosomak armoured car commander, Afghanistan 2011. The quality of the sculpting and detailing is absolutely stunning and the casting looks flawless. EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.creativemodels.co.uk www.eduard.com Tamiya’s recently issued 1:35 M40 155mm Big Shot is the recipient of a reasonably modest but very useful sheet of photo-etched brass parts this month. Tamiya’s model is a stunning production that’s packed with detail but it just needs a few small items to really make it shine, most significantly the headlight brush-guards. These are always a sticking point on any kit of a Sherman-derived vehicle and if they are in scale, the model will look way more realistic. Eduard’s set provides them, plus some other handy but less crucial sheet-metal parts. ICM’s fantastic MiG-25RBT gets three sets; seat harnesses, cockpit interior parts and a host of exterior fittings for the engine afterburners, and airframe enhancements. CITROËN H LA CAMIONNETTE STAR www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:20 MATERIALS; IM, CP, SVT, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; NO.25007 The Citroen H van is, to coin an over-used phrase, a true icon of French motoring. It was the first commercial van to be built in France after WW2 and quickly became hugely popular. Ebbro already offer the fabulous DS19 in their range and has now been joined by the H van, much to the delight of modellers of automotive subjects. Just like the real vehicle, the body is broken down into panels with the strengthening ribs reproduced on the inside too. The effect has not been ruined by ejector-pin marks either, a major plus point, because the interior of the van can be seen with the rear and large side door open. No engine is provided, but the sump and gearbox are present, as well as the exhaust box. The steering is workable but the cabin, side and rear doors must be fix in either the open or closed position. TYPE 95 LIGHT TANK HA-GO BATTLE OF KHALKHIN GOL www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, PC, WS ITEM NO; FM48 Fine Molds’ Type 95 is a gorgeous representation of this diminutive Imperial Japanese tank, featuring an extremely high level of detail over its multi-panel hull and tiny turret. The suspension is beautifully engineered and the finished appearance will be greatly enhanced by the appropriately sagged link-and-length tracks moulded in kit plastic; they depict the significantly loose, weighted appearance of the upper runs perfectly. You can add Fine Molds’ own upgrade sets (MG06 metal gun barrel, MG78 photo-etched parts) to the kit should you wish, but to be honest the plastic mouldings (and the PE exhaust shroud, included) are so good that further detail items are barely needed. This edition of the kit depicts a Ha-Go from the Battles of Khalkhin Gol which took place on the Japanese-Soviet border in Mongolia and Soviet Union in 1939; appropriate markings are included. The kit is finely detailed and is superior to the ageing CMK production in every aspect. It comes with very nicely detailed fighting-compartment and turret interiors (not that much will be visible once finished) plus snap-together indi-link tracks. Two turret shells are provided, one for the R-2 and one for the Vz35; the instructions are pretty clear on which parts to use for either version. MCLAREN HONDA MP4-31 2016 SPANISH GP www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:20 MATERIALS; IM, CP, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; EMSF-1 NO.18 Ebbro created an all-new kit for the 2015 McLaren MP4-30 and it was received with much acclaim, not least because new kits of any Formula 1 cars are so few and far between these days. It’s odd then that Ebbro have slipped the 2016 car rather quietly onto the market, but it’s still very welcome. Although they look similar, the MP4-31’s bodywork differs in almost every way to the MP4-30 and the kit’s parts reflect this; by holding one body-parts sprue over the other, the manifold changes to the aerodynamics can be readily observed, quite an interesting exercise in itself. As with Ebbro’s previous car kits, the mouldings are of an almost Tamiya-like quality, featuring sharp-edged detail, no flash or other defects. The kits is engineless, so the cowling is cemented in place. A very welcome release indeed. MN

KUROGANE 4X4 IJA TYPE 95 SCOUT CAR www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO; FM50 The Kurogane could be seen as Imperial Japan’s answer to the Jeep or Kubelwagen, although nowhere near as well known. It featured four-wheel drive and was powered by a V-twin engine of just 1.4cc in its final form. Its characterful looks make it a great subject for a model kit, so Fine Molds’ release is a welcome one. The model comes with a representation of the powerplant, plus detailed suspension that includes shock absorbers. The windscreen is well designed, with framed glazing panels that will be easy to mask. Decals are provided for the dashboard instruments and the wipers are individually moulded. The wheels/tyres are moulded in kit plastic too, much better than vinyl. MESSERSCHMITT BF109G-2 PROFIPACK www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS, PCM ITEM NO.82116 Five markings-options are offered with this kit, all quite varied and eye-catching. First up we have the G-2 trop ‘black 2’ of 2./JG77 based in Tunisia, early 1943. It features a green ‘squiggle’ over the RLM79/78 standard tropical scheme, with a yellow lower cowling. Next, we have ‘yellow 10’, a G-2/R-6 of Fw Hans Döbrich, based in Alakurtti, Finland 1943. This is an RLM74/75/76 scheme with a heavy winder whitewash that all but covers the camouflage. The third option is Lt Walter Krupinski’s G-2/R-6 ‘yellow 5’ in RLM74/75/76 with a yellow fuselage band and lower cowling. Mjr Hans Hahn’s G-2/R-6 sports a solid layer of white over its RLM74/75/76 camouflage and carries the distinctive ‘Grünherz’ green heart of JG.54 on its flank. Finally, we have the unusuallypainted G-2/R-6 W.Nr.13633 ‘white 1’ of Hptm. Wolf-Dieter Huy, based in Tanyet Harun, Egypt, October 1942. Some great decal options for a stunning kit. MN

But don’t let the vintage put you off, this was a golden era for this Italian company and the kit looks remarkably crisp and fresh. Part of this is due to Tamiya’s intervention, with updated detail in the areas of the fenders, turret rear stowage box, weld seams on the turret top plus turret hatch pistons. No doubt the moulds would have been given a general ‘going over’ prior to production too. This boxing also features two Tamiya-moulded crew figures (the older Italeri ones are still included) plus Tamiya’s sprue of superb British infantry equipment that provides a Bren gun, a Sten gun, Lee-Enfield rifles, helmets, valise packs, water bottles and more. It’s a wonderful kit, full of fun features, perhaps the most notable being the retractable wheels seen on the car at the end of the first film when Doc Brown returns. The car can almost replicate this version but oddly, it doesn’t come with the Mr Fusion device added by Doc Brown to power the car with rubbish, so for strict accuracy the folding wheels should not be used; the Back To The Future II kit does come with the Mr Fusion device, which was actually a Krups Coffina 223 coffee grinder in reality. The kit parts are very well detailed and comes with the main items added for the film; some extra wiring would be the finishing touch. Same again for the second release of the ship, which depicts the vessel as she appeared during the 1937 Coronation Fleet Review. As before, the model comes with some aircraft for her deck in the form of the most exquisitely tiny Fairy Swordfish (x4) and Supermarine Walrus (x2) and these even come with photo-etched struts and rigging. The Fleet Review means a squeaky-clean ship, so no weathering is needed here; you’ll also need to add the flags and to mount them, Flyhawk include Uschi van der Rosten’s fantastically fine rigging material. AIRBUS A350-900 LUFTHANSA www.revell.de/en SCALE 1:144 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM; 0393 This is a four-year old kit, so the mouldings are super-fine and modern in design. It’s a long aircraft even at 1:144 but the wingspans on modern airliners aren’t huge so the model’s ‘display cabinet footprint’ isn’t overwhelming. The initial release came in the rather bland Airbus corporate colours, so this Lufthansaliveried machine is much more visually appealing. The model is moulded in the standard white polystyrene and while this makes sense, a pale grey plastic would be easy to work with (visually) and it’s also easier to photograph for our magazine reviews! Surface detail is impeccable and coupled with a stunning decal sheet (designed by none other than DACO products) it makes for a potentially beautiful model. If only it were British Airways! MN

The model comes with a detailed replica of the M-63 radial engine, the rear of which can be shown off thanks to three individually moulded cowling panels. In reality the I-16 cockpit is a fairly sparse affair but ICM have captured the utilitarian structures with great finesse. The cockpit access doors (flaps) are moulded individually, as are the elevators and rudder; the latter two items are marked as ‘no glue’ in the instructions, so they can remain positionable. Four markings-options are provided, three for the standard green/ light blue paint schemes and one with an overall winterwhitewash. MN

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY SHIPPING TRUMPETER 1:350 TSESAREVICH 1904
TSESAREVICH A Chris Meddings brings us a little history, not to mention a wonderful model-build, of the Imperial Russian Navy battleship Tsesarevich
T
sesarevich was a battleship of the Imperial Russian Navy, built for and stationed with the Pacific Squadron based in Port Arthur in Manchuria at the turn of the 19th Century. She was built as part of an order to dramatically expand Tsar Nicholas II’s navy and formed part of an order from foreign shipyards to accelerate the expansion, as Russian shipyards were already at full capacity. She was built at Forge et Chantiere de Méditerannée in France and featured a heavily accentuated tumblehome hull based on the French ship Jauréguiberry and typical of French pre-dreadnought designs. She would go on to become the basis for the Borodino class, built in Russia. Tsesarevich was commissioned in 1903 and proceeded directly to Port Arthur under her first Captain Ivan Grigorovich, arriving in Port Arthur in December 1903. She arrived just in time with the Russo-Japanese war starting in February 1904,
52
although multilateral tensions between Japan, Russia, China, Great Britain and others had been boiling in the area for some years as various regional and global powers competed for Naval control of the region and it is certain the Tsar had an eye on this when seeking to expand the Pacific fleet. The war began with a surprise Japanese attack on Port Arthur which actually took place a few hours before the formal Declaration of War was received in Moscow from the Japanese. The Japanese Imperial Fleet used torpedo boats and destroyers to attack the Russian Pacific Fleet at anchor, heavily damaging Tsesarevich and the battleship Retzivan as well as a number of other vessels. Following this attack the Japanese very much took the aggressive route, blockading the Russian Pacific Fleet in port and preventing them from leaving and regaining the initiative. Several attempts were made to break out but none were successful. In April 1904 the commander of the Russian Fleet was

the Petropavlovsk struck a Japanese mine and sank with the loss of 652 men and twenty-seven officers. With Admiral Makarov’s death, Admiral Wilgelm Vitgeft was appointed command of the Fleet. On August 10th 1904, Admiral Vitgeft I replaced the hard to work PE rails on the waist turrets with brass wire
attempted to move the fleet from Port Arthur to the Russian port of Vladivostok, commanding the fleet from the Tsesarevich. However, Admiral Tg was waiting for them with his own fleet and around midday they obtained visual contact. Admiral Tg commenced his attack, crossing Admiral Vitgeft’s T and commenced firing with main batteries
54
at a distance of eight miles, which was at the time the furthest distance at which ships had ever engaged each other. They continued to close, firing at each other continuously until within sufficient range to use their secondary batteries. After a number of hours firing, the Tsesarevich having been struck multiple times, a hit from one of Admiral Tg’s battleships struck the bridge of Tsesarevich, killing Admiral Vitgeft instantly and jamming the ships steering to port. She turned from the line of battle temporarily out of control until the damage and chaos on the bridge could be brought under control. A number of the other Russian ships followed her, perhaps believing it was a fleet move, or perhaps to

cover the stricken flagship, but sensing the blood in the water the Japanese concentrated their fire on Tsesarevich. Seeing that the ship was unable to steer and in mortal danger the captain of the Retzivan, Eduard Schensnovich, ordered his ship to charge the Japanese battle line, drawing the Japanese attention and fire from Tsesarevich and allowing her the time needed to regain steering control. By this time darkness was coming and Rear
Admiral Ukhtomsk took control of the battered Russian fleet and under cover of night disengaged and managed to shepherd the fleet to Vladivostok. However Tsesarevich’s damage included massive holes in her funnels which dramatically increased coal consumption. Unable to reach Vladivostok or Port Arthur with the coal reserves on board, she was forced to limp to the German treaty port of Tsingtao, where she was disarmed

and impounded, playing no further part in the war. Tsesarevich would go on to serve in WWI although not in a front-line capacity and eventually her crew joined the revolution in 1917 when she was renamed Grazhdanin (‘Citizen’). Her final Battle was the Battle of Moon Sound which saw her sister ship Slava very heavily damaged and scuttled, but little damage to Tsesarevich for little damage inflicted on the enemy. In 1918 she was taken under the control of the Bolsheviks. She sat in Kronstadt rotting for six years before being scrapped in 1924.
THE KIT
I decided to depict Tsesarevich coming out of the line at the Battle of the Yellow sea in the dramatic moment when she was stricken and her steering jammed. I started with the Trumpeter 1:350 Tsesarevich 1904 (05338). Note; there are two kits of Tsesarevich from Trumpeter, this and a 1917 version so make sure you get the right one for the period you wish to depict as there are a number of differences. The kit comes with a lot of photo-etched parts and it’s very well thought out and made, so I did not purchase any additional etch sets. However I did add a set of barrels by Master (350-086) which are superbly made and cover all five of the different cannon armament sizes on the model. I also added a set of 3D printed crew figures from Northstar Models, plus their etched ‘Russian Empire Battleship
Arms’ (350009) and the indispensable rigging thread from Uschi van der Rosten.
THE BUILD
I started by deciding that as I was depicting a specific moment at sea, I would waterline the model. Unlike some kits, there is not a pre-scored line to waterline the hull halves so I would have to ‘freestyle’ it. This is easy to do and pretty much without risk in my opinion, so long as you are careful and conservative with the cut. I started by assembling the two hull halves, internal braces and the deck to help the hull retain its form when cut. I referred to period photos to establish the standard waterline. After finding the even keel waterline, I marked a slightly higher line on one side and lower on the other to create the list. I then cut about 1cm below where the waterline would be. Next I cut a piece of 50mm deep blue styrofoam sheet from 4D Modelshop to size for my base. I laid the waterline ship on the foam and marked out around the bottom then used a new scalpel blade to cut out the outline, cutting just inside the marked line to account for the distance between the model and the pen when I marked the cut. When building a ship you have to be aware that the further you get, the harder it is to access parts for painting. So knowing I would be adding a lot to the deck later I decided to paint it now.
PAINTING THE DECK
I started by spraying the
U
I made weather covers for the boats from Tamiya 2 part epoxy putty
The ripped, damaged funnels as seen on the period photos, that lead to Tsesarevich losing most of her power and limping to Tsingtao
Damage was added to the left hull by thinning the area then making the holes. NOTE, the large hole was erroneously added after mistaking a picture of the ship Orel with Tsesarevich and should not be copied.
One hit passed through the stern armour and sheared between the anchor tie offs. I cut them and made the hole in the armoured rail.

Tamiya XF-57 Buff. Next I selected four Humbrol enamels; 81 Matt Pale Yellow, 110 Matt Natural Wood, 34 Matt White and 94 Brown Yellow. I put a little of each paint on a plastic palette and started on the model. Using one colour at
a time, and a 0000 brush, I added a little thinner, applying the paint in a milk like consistency, and picking out random ‘planks’ on the plastic deck parts. Once I had used the three colours (not the white) to cover about 40% of the deck I mixed new colours from the

colours on the palette and adding a touch of white here and there, to give me several new shades and started again, painting random planks until I had the whole deck covered. The trick is to keep the paint thin so you are just tinting each plank with
a translucent coat. When the enamel was dry and it didn’t take long, I mixed up a very thin, greyish-brown colour-wash. I removed most of the liquid from the brush until it was just damp, then applied it in long gentle strokes following the line of the planks from fore to aft

The windbreaks were added with Tamiya Epoxy Putty rolled very very thin, then torn and shaped for splinter damage
Damage was added to the forward funnel, and the observation platform
and vice versa. The intention is to tint the deck and pull together the different tints into the same tonal range. I left the deck to dry for a full twenty-four hours. It would dry far faster than that but next I would be masking it and you can’t really risk applying masking to a painted surface unless you are certain it will not lift. I went back and started looking at the original photos from Tsingtao after the battle and studied the damage. To avoid breaking small parts, I ‘damaged’ to the hull before moving on. I started by mapping out the holes and marks with a Sharpie pen. The largest hole would need something behind it to give the illusion of an interior so I thinned around the edge of the hole from the inside with round files, leaving the edge ragged. Next I cut a piece of thin plastic card to fit inside the hull. I didn’t detail it at all, it was really just there to take dark paint to give the impression of a deck. I repeated this around the
highly likely each was a different shade. I chose Tamiya Flat Black (XF-1), IJN Green (XF-70), Olive Green (XF-58) and Buff (XF-57). I don’t recall the exact mix, but if I had to do it again I’d probably use those colours in this ratio: 10%, 40%, 40% and 10%. I used an empty and clean Tamiya paint jar and made around half a jar’s worth to make sure I had plenty of the mix for all stages of the build. I thinned the paint with Tamiya X20A and laid on three light even coats of the base colour. When this was dry I removed the masking. Luckily there was no overspray or unwanted ‘green’ on the deck. The method of building a modelship is quite different to building an armour kit. You can more or less build armour all in one go then paint it, but ship modelling requires a lot of flipping between the two and it can only really be done in sub-assemblies (and a lot of them). With that in mind I looked through the
hull to copy the other marks and holes seen in the photos. Note: I since found out that the large hole in front of the port gun turret, was not Tsesarevich, and was in fact the Battleship Orel, sustained in the same battle.
MAIN COLOURS
The hull colour is something of a bone of contention. Received wisdom is that Russian Ships were light grey over green in the west, and black over red in the Pacific. However, research indicated that actually the Pacific Squadron ships were olive green. I had this confirmed by my friend Andrey Aksenov who had also been looking into this and had come across research by the Russian Federation based Akan acrylic paint manufacturer. According to the period sources the colours to be mixed were black, olive, green and buff. No specific shades or ratios were given and apparently each ship was responsible for its own mixing and repaint so it’s
Close up of weathering undertaken on the hull

instructions and planned which elements would be built as sub-assemblies for painting. I built the turrets and bridges as complete sub-assemblies. During the construction of the forward bridge I heavily ‘damaged’ the communications room which shows catastrophic damage in photos from the ship after the battle. The funnels needed a fair bit of work before they could be mounted. On Tsesarevich they took a huge amount of damage in the battle with great rents on the sides facing each other. The kit funnels are very thick and for my uses they would need thinning. I cut out their bases, put two halves together and made the seams good. I inserted a rounded diamond burr into my Dremel and used it inside the funnel on the lowest speed. I (cautiously) ground out the inner checking the thickness by holding them up to the light until I could clearly see light showing through them.

It was then easy to use a new scalpel blade to cut the desired larger holes. Once I was happy with the damage I heated them gently to collapse them slightly.
ADDING FURTHER SMALL DETAILING
On the turrets I carefully cut the missing vision slits in the observation cupolas. On the smaller turrets Trumpeter provides you with PE guard rails. The tabs on these are next to impossible to bend so I replaced them with 0.3mm rod. There are a number of ways of adding windbreakers to the rails and I chose putty. I dusted a tile with talc and rolled out Tamiya two-part putty as thin as I could, then cut it into thin strips, about
Once dried the Neutral Grey from AK made a pleasingly matt, charcoal grey stain
the width of the railings. I moistened one side and carefully applied it to the railings, pushing it gently to get the shape of the railings to show through. I hen added, rips and tears with the tip of a scalpel. I painted all the sub-assemblies with the premixed basic colour. I picked out the damage with Vallejo Steel for the fresh damaged metal. I then assembled most of the major sub-assemblies on the hull, including the final PE parts to be fitted. I gave all the green surfaces a couple of coats of green enamel filter. When the filters were dry I used AK Interactive Neutral Grey Filter to add darker stains around the damage for fire and smoke
The author added lightening to the turrets with buff mixed with ochre enamels, used in an oil paint like consistency
staining. I did the same on the funnels to add coal smoke staining. I used the same technique, this time with the sludge from AK ‘Rainmarks for NATO tanks’, mixed with a little Humbrol Ochre (un-thinned) to add lightening to upper surfaces and edges. I really used it only to add accent to the shape and form of the model. When this was dry I diluted some of the Neutral Grey wash and used it as a pin wash to pick out details all over the model. Once that had dried, I used small amounts of pure Rainmarks to add light streaks from the bilges as seen in the period photos. More Neutral grey enamel was used to add shadow in a similar way to the lightening mentioned
earlier. In some areas, such as the turret roofs, I wet blended the light and dark. Dirtying-down and other final touches Weathering is very much a fluid stage for me on ships, I will often go back to individual spots and rework them, or add a little more here and there for emphasis. It really is about little bits here and there using your judgement and eye until it looks how you want it rather than using a rigid regimented sequence every time. Once it was dry I fitted the rigging with Uschi Van Der Rosten ‘Rig That Thing’ Lycra thread and crew from Northstar models. Finally I finished the ‘sea’, following Chris Flodberg’s method.

AXEL URBANKE, LUFTFAHRTVERLAG START www.luftfahrtverlag-start.de This is the latest instalment of this marvellous series of books, featuring never-beforepublished photos of Luftwaffe subjects in great print quality. In No.26 we have a compilation of imagery that encompasses the quirky little Arado Ar96 trainer, showing it in some truly tatty conditions, disproving the theory that trainer aircraft were kept clean. Other types seen in this volume include the ubiquitous Bf109G (-2), Fw190A, Do217 nightfighter, a spotty-camouflaged Ju88S-3, the sinister-looking Ju188E-1 and a Fieseler Storch Fi156C-3 Trop, uncomfortably crashed-landed on top of a house near the Austrian border. Ironically, the tail logo on the Storch is a little white house, for the pilot’s name Obergruppenführer Hausser. Ahem. More fantastic wartime images continue, with colour photos of a Ju86V24 and a wonderful gatefold illustration (plus accompanying photos) of an Fw200 Condor by Australian artist Juanita Franzi. The style of presentation is very interesting too; each item of equipment is depicted as a colour-rendered digital illustration, which allows the reader to see exactly the designs easily and clearly, very handy for modellers. The book is softback in style, with a generous page-count of 160. Well worth the £25 asking price. MN

DAVID PARKER, MARK NEVILLE, ANDY TAYLOR, AFV MODELLER PUBLICATIONS www.afvmodeller.com ISBN 978-0-9935646-0-4 This new title from AFV Modeller includes three stunning works of modelling art, all depicting scrapped Soviet tanks as they would look in one of those huge post-Cold War tank dumping grounds, photos of which we sometimes see in our newsfeeds. The modelling on show is fantastic, from David Parker’s astonishing, chopped-up T-62 diorama (with a creepily realistic, orange boilersuit-clad workman), Mark Neville’s excellent scrapped T-62 BDD and Andy Taylor’s exquisitely trashed Georgian T-55AM. All three models provide masses of inspiration, as do the forty+ pages of full-size reference photos in the middle of the book. If you like your Soviet armour faded, corroded, dismantled and chopped up, this book provides a mouthwatering incentive to hit the workbench. MN

t has been a while since Tamiya released a new 1:6 motorcycle kit (the Harley Davidson Fat Boy Lo, four years to be precise), so when I learned of the Honda CRF1000F’s release, I was extremely pleased. I have to make an admission here; I’m not really a major motorcycle modeller, having built only a handful in the last couple of decades, but the model that I consider my most successful, and the one that I try to keep in the best condition, is Tamiya’s 1:12 Honda RC166 which I built for TMMI Issue No.175, May 2010. It’s one of the most perfect model kits ever released made in my opinion. I plan to build the new Honda too, and I aim to put my own touch of weathering (light) on it. Wish me luck, it’s a big one! ●
News just in: A set of colour-matched Zero Paints is being prepared for this kit! Order from; www.hiroboy.com

AMMO BY MIG JIMENEZ KING TIGER INTERIOR, EXTERIOR COLOURS www.migjimenez.com With the ever increasing sophistication of model kits, many including full internal detailing, there are more and more areas to paint! Takom’s fabulous King Tiger is a good example, coming with a very comprehensive interior, including the engine bay. To make sure that the modeller gets the colours right, AMMO by Mig Jimenez have prepared two packs of six paints each, one for the fighting compartment, innerturret, gearbox, engine and ammunition rounds. For the exterior, they have produced a pack for the three-colour camouflage, a winter whitewash, tracks and the wooden parts of the on-vehicle tools. The paints are acrylics with stirring balls in each bottle to ensure the pigments are fully distributed in the solvents. Highly recommended.
