IN BRIEF...

NEW FROM TAMIYA 1:35 US TANK DESTROYER M10 MID PRODUCTION The latest release in the 1:35 Military Miniature Series depicts the US M10 Tank Destroyer, a subject also covered in the 1:48 series. This is a largely newly-tooled model (only machine gun and clear parts are taken from existing models). Intensive study and measurement of the M10 in the tank museum at Saumur led to this highly detailed miniature. The driver's hatch can be fitted in the open or closed position and features the driver’s periscope. The model comes with three figures (commander, loader, gunner) in realistic poses, plus two markings-options for recreating M10s belonging to the 601st and 634th US Tank Destroyer Battalions. www.hobbyco.net

Tamiya's popular 1:48 Military Miniature Series features a broad line-up of models depicting historically important vehicles. Now, it welcomes its first model of a tank in current service, the Japanese Type 10 main battle tank. This model is not simply a smaller scale version of the 1:35 Type 10 (35329), it recreates a tank from the newer fourth production lot (C4), which was delivered from 2014 to Spring 2015 and features a number of evolutions of the original design. C4 production lot-specific features such as the altered fender and turret rack designs, plus the updated antenna are recreated in the model. Link-and-length type assembly tracks feature one-piece straight sections. Two markings-options are included, to recreate a Type 10 from the JGSDF 1st or 8th Tank Battalions. Comes with one commander torso figure to add further life to the model. www.hobbyco.net

NEW FROM TAMIYA 1:16 RC JAGDPANZER IV /70(V) LANG The latest model in the 1:16 RC Tank Series depicts the Jagdpanzer IV /70(V) Lang tank destroyer. This German AFV was a popular release in the 1:35 back in 2014. The model is powered by a pre-assembled gearbox with two Type 380 motors and features metal parts such as the chassis, suspension arms, drive sprockets and more, for excellent durability. It features a realistically weighty aluminium gun barrel. The included DMD Control Unit T-03 has two FET speed controllers for operating two running motors and allows control of various tank functions. DMD Multi Function Unit MF-05 connects to DMD control unit T-03 to provide many realistic effects such as main/machine gun firing sounds, muzzle flash and recoil movement. Compatible with the Battle System (Item 53447) for fun and interactive battles with friends! Requires a 4-channel transmitter with self-neutral function, battery pack and transmitter batteries. ast issue I described the construction and light modification of Tamiya's new 1:35 AMX-13 kit and this month, I had a chance to paint and weather it. In the previous instalment I talked about how I had imagined this particular AMX-13 as a neglected but still running machine, perhaps used by the owners of a private AFV collection to tow other vehicles and for just driving around and having fun. With this in mind, I decided to employ the 'hairspray technique’ to allow a lot of paint scratches and scrapes to be created across the hull and turret.

8

The model would need a very sturdy layer of rust-coloured primer that would withstand the somewhat physical weathering process and therefore I chose Vallejo's Surface Primers, which, from experience, dry to a very tough finish. I mixed black and red oxide primers to create a dark chocolate brown that would double as a starter for the rust tones and also my preferred undercoat of black, or near to it. I then turned to Vallejo's 'Rust and Chipping Effects' set (71.186) which contains six rust colours plus 'Chipping Medium' and

'Matt Varnish'. As you can see from the photos, I airbrushed and sponged-on the various rust colours to create an approximation of a rusted hull; this didn't need to be a perfect finish as much of it would be covered over with the main colour and subsequent weathering treatments, but it needed to be more than just a plain dark brown as the scrapes and scratches were going to be far more extensive than on a conventional AFV. The whole model was treated to the browns and oranges and then allowed to

cure fully so the paint was as tough as it could be. I left the model for around two weeks but it could be worked on sooner. The 'Chipping Medium' is a water-soluble liquid mask and it is the key to achieving the realistic scratches in the top colour; it replaces the hairspray in the eponymous technique but it does the same job. I airbrushed this slightly

.2 t P ! Y L E O NIC To start off the rusted steel effects, the whole model was given an undercoat of very dark brown, mixed from Vallejo red-brown and black acrylic primer. This provides a solid layer for the paints to follow

Over the dark backdrop, Vallejo Light Rust (71.129) from the Rust and Chipping Effects set (71.186) was airbrushed in patches over the whole model, keeping it uneven but covering the whole model

thick fluid over the whole model and allowed it to thoroughly dry so that it would shrink around the detail. This layer creates an uneven gloss finish and makes the model look rather unpleasant, but don't panic, once the colour coats go on, this will be hidden. A very faded, flaking and almost powdery paint colour was needed to replicate a military finish that had seen decades of sitting in the sun and rain and so I needed to go extremely light with the paint. Instead of starting with olive drab as I normally do, I began my green paint mixture with

pure white, adding drops of Tamiya's gorgeously bright X-28 Park Green to create a peppermint green colour. Not very 'military' you might say, but this was going to be a very abused paint finish and for that, I had to start light and work towards a darker finish; it is much more of a challenge to attain a realistic effect when working in the opposite direction. Other colours were added to the mixture, including X-4 Blue and XF-15 Flat Flesh, layering them up to create a multi-toned effect that would suggest a heavily worn finish.

A piece of torn sponge was dipped in the Light Rust colour and dabbed on high spots of the model to create a speckled effect

Further shades from the Vallejo Rust and Chipping Effects set were dabbed on with a sponge to create a varied range of rust tones

We can see the mottled rusty appearance taking shape. Much of this will be covered by the light green paint to follow, but an overall coat of ‘rust’ is needed to allow the scratched/scored paint effects to be created later on

V

The lighter rust tones were also airbrushed on to further vary the tonal range

With the rust-coloured layers fully cured (I left it for two weeks in which time I assembled the tracks and other tasks) the whole model was sprayed with the Vallejo 'Chipping Medium' (73.214) which will also be found in the set. This is a water-soluble glaze and will act as the 'hairspray' in this process. The glossy model looks pretty ghastly at this stage

The top colour starts to go on. For the heavily faded green of the model, a mixture of Tamiya X-28 Park Green, X-4 Blue and XF-2 Flat White was airbrushed in the manner you might apply 'pre-shading'; along structural lines and into recesses. Note that the area on the track guard where the stowage lockers were removed have been masked off with Silly Putty to retain a continuous 'rust' finish

The green was allowed to gradually build up, but retaining a very patchy finish

Some XF-15 Flat Flesh was added to the green mixture and airbrushed on in random patches to enhance the weathered, mottled look we are trying to achieve

THAT PAINT V SCRAPE One I was satisfied with

this, I began the paint 'damage' process. Using a clean paintbrush, I applied tap water to one small area at a time, then used a cut-down brush to gently scrub the top coat off, revealing the rust tones beneath. This will obviously have far more effect on areas of thin paint (the most patchy parts) and less so where the colour has built up, so go lightly with your technique or you might have to re-treat the surface with the Chipping Medium and re-coat with the colour top coat. For the finer scratches I used a metallic tipped tool as well as a needle held in a pin-vice and worked across the model creating natural-looking squiggles and scoring in areas that might be most exposed to the elements, as well as the movement of the crew, many years before. To place the model in the current era, I needed some markings that would immediately tell the onlooker that it's the 20th or 21st century. And what better than some graffiti tags? Airbrushing 1:35 graffiti is much harder than you'd think, so for an authentic look I turned to Uschi van der Rosten's superb decal sheet which provides various styles of street art – including tags – in waterslide form. Once the decals had been set and had dried, I used rust effects from Adam Wilder's 'Wilder' range of materials to take the

U

Now we can begin the scraping/ scratching process. The matt acrylic colours are porous and allow water to soak through, so the model's surface was moistened (not flooded) with tap water and the larger areas gently abraded with a cut-down paint brush

To form the finer scratches, a metal-tipped tool was used to gently scrape through the thin green layer to expose the rust tones beneath. Photographs of old and abandoned tanks in boneyards plus a little common sense and imagination dictated where the scratches should be applied. This is the fun part of the process!

The number '5' was added to the turret face with the use of a photo-etched stencil (Stencilit). Tamiya masking tape was used to hold it in place

Tamiya XF-2 Flat White – thinned to a medium consistency – was airbrushed at low pressure to avoid the paint being blown under the stencil

Although it’s a 1950s tank, our AMX-13 was planted in the modern era as a drivable wreck by the use of graffiti tags. These are actually decals from the manufacturer Uschi van der Rosten (www.uschivdr.com, albionhobbies.com) and come on a continuous carrier film, and therefore need careful trimming out. Once cut out, they were applied in the normal manner, very carefully moving into place with tweezers

Applying decals onto a surface that has been treated with the ‘hairspray’ technique present us with a problem; the water used in the decalling process will reactivate the soluble mask and the paint around the decal can start to disintegrate. Therefore, the markings must be applied with the minimum of poking and positioning and the setting solution must be dabbed on without touching the surrounding paint

V surface rust finish a

little further, as well as some localised colour-washes of thinned black and brown oil paints to visually deepen the detail. I opted to use no pigments at all on the model as I intended it look like it had been sitting around for a while and most dust etc., had been washed off by rainfall.

TIME TO ACCESSORISE

To add a few focal points, I painted up some fuel cans from Plus Model's recent resin set and placed them in various locations on the model. One fuel can was given a bright red pouring spout and the cap was sliced off an oil bottle and place beside it in the rear stowage bin, with plenty of spilled oil too. A length of chain was draped along the hull front and a coil of lead wire was painted up to look like fuel hose, maybe used for siphoning petrol to drive this little beast! Overall then, Tamiya's AMX-13 is a highly accurate and very buildable replica of this unusual-looking 1950s French light tank. You can build and paint it as a fully functional vehicle in French Army colours and markings, or give it a twist as I have done here. That's the joy of modelling, you can do whatever you like! ●

Three simple but realistic tags were all that were needed to tell us that this vehicle has been sitting around long enough for the local herberts to leap the fence and add their own aerosol signatures

For the tracks, there's only one option for a model like this; Friulmodel. The cast metal links were assembled with the provided brass wire and then chemically treated with various track-staining fluids, finished off with Wilder's 'Quick Rust' which adds a brownish tone

KIT PREVIEW

TAMIYA/ITALERI 1:35 GERMAN BUNDESWEHR M109A3G SELF-PROPELLED HOWITZER ● KIT NO.37022

BUNDESWEHR’S BIG BRUISER

With the addition of some key new parts, Italeri’s M109 has been transformed into the M109A3G German Army version

I

n this release, Tamiya have teamed up with Italeri to create the Bundeswehr ‘A3G version of the American-made M109 self-propelled howitzer. At the suggestion of Tamiya, Italeri have created a new sprue of parts for the kit, providing a modified, longer FH70 gun barrel, the Diehl type tracks used by the Bundeswehr, a new commander’s cupola and MG, gun elevation shroud, driver’s mirrors, turret stowage boxes and tools. Also added to the box by Tamiya for this release is a grey polystyrene sprue (2004, taken from the Leopard 2 release) that provides modern German tank commander and driver figures – partial

at least; from the knees upwards – plus road sign parts; the sign information will be found on the decal sheet along with vehicle markings and tiny German flag patches for the uniforms. Also on the decal sheet are five, plain black rectangles, designed to represent the faces of the driver’s periscopes, a neat solution to this often irritating problem encountered when building armour models. The bulk of the kit is, of course, the Italeri model from 1983 but don’t forget, this Italian company was ahead of its time and produced some outstanding military vehicle kits in the ‘70s and ‘80s; the parts of the M109 are remarkably sophisticated, all the

The one-piece tracks are pretty decent for their type, but the model would be transformed with the addition of some metal links from Friulmodel (ATL-125 M109 German Tracks, www.friulmodel. hu). They are all you really need to buy to finish off this impressive beast, plus Tamiya’s NATO camouflage paints of course! ● MN MODEL SPEC TAMIYA/ITALERI GERMAN BUNDESWEHR M109A3G SELFPROPELLED HOWITZER KIT NO.37022 SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:35 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .IM, SVT, WS AVAILABILITY; Good model shops everywhere. KIT PREVIEW TEAM LOTUS TYPE 88 (1981) ● KIT NO.EMSF-1 NO.011

Plated and unplated side-panels are included

BANNED BY BALESTRE

Ebbro’s latest 1:20 release depicts the infamous Lotus 88, the potentially winning F1 car that was banned before it could race

T

he latest 1:20 Formula 1 car kit to come from premium Japanese model maker Ebbro takes the form of the famous – or perhaps that should be infamous – Lotus 88. The car used an advanced development of Colin Chapman’s ground-effect design and was banned from taking part in the 1981 season, causing much argument between Lotus and the controversial Jean-Marie Balestre of the FIA. The car became somewhat of a legend and thus a new kit from this manufacturer is very welcome indeed. The new model is moulded in blue, black, metallic grey and plated polystyrene, with a sprue of tinted clear parts to represent the engine intake mesh covers and small windscreen. Plated

The car’s wheels are plated with a very bright finish

parts are provided for the massive body side panels and a duplicate set of these are also included in unplated plastic, for modellers who prefer to create their own brightly polished metal finish through the use of today’s high-tech metallic paints. Chrome-effect decals are provided as well, so the kit offers some helpful choices in the replication of this tricky-to-master finish. The car is presented in its blue, red and chrome scheme (No.11) as tested by Elio de Angelis, but it doesn’t come with a driver, so you’ll need to use either Tamiya’s 1:20 figure from the Motorsports Team Set (1970-1985, 20063) or adapt a resin driver from one of the aftermarket manufacturers. As you’d expect from Ebbro, the detail throughout is refined and

beautifully formed and the DFV engine is a little beauty. The structural parts depict the ‘double chassis’ design perfectly but the model is not overwhelmingly complex, so it should go together relatively quickly. From experience, the parts-fit of Ebbro’s F1 cars is excellent; after all, the company’s owner, Mr Makoto Kiya, was one of Tamiya’s key model designers for many years. Overall then, this is a lovely model of a very important car, even though it’s one that never actually raced. ● MN MODEL SPEC TEAM LOTUS TYPE 88 (1981) KIT NO.EMSF-1 NO.011 SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:20 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . DITION I

n 2011, Volkswagen officially committed to the WRC World Rally Championship with the Polo R WRC with three crews; SĂŠbastien Ogier/ Julien Ingrassia, Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila and Andreas Mikkelsen/ Mikko Markkula. 2012 was utilised to develop the car, which was powered by a supercharged 1.6 litre engine developing around 320bhp. In 2013, competition began with Sebastien Loeb at the wheel in Monaco, but later Ogier took nine wins and the world title in the process. Assembly of Belkits' recently released Polo R WRC began by drilling holes in the front and rear wheel arches with 1.3mm and 1.6mm drills for the location the fuel tanks, suspension parts

and stabiliser bars (I think that's what it they are called). The drilling is not a problem in itself, what is more difficult is that the holes' locations are marked on the part. Diagrams are okay but you can not be 100% sure that the holes will be aligned with the parts they should receive, so I proceeded as follows; I put a drop of black Citadel paint on the end of each of the lugs of parts H5, 6, 9 and 10 then I pressed parts against the wheel arch at their supposed location, to make a mark. As such, the locations were determined by 'guesstimation' but they did eventually correspond with the drawings in the instructions. Other holes were opened up in the roof but the job was much easier here because the locations are marked on the inside.

The front and rear wheel arches must be drilled to accommodate suspension elements. The location is a bit random and the instructions not very accurate

For the roof, drilling holes for the different antennae and sensors is more accurate because the sites are well marked in the body

U

The engraved detail was lightly accentuated with an engraving tool so it could be highlighted after painting the body with a black colour-wash

The outlines of the bonnet ventilation louvres were painted before applying the decals. Tamiya makes a masking tape roll backed by a plastic sheet to protect large areas at once. Very handy!

V BODY The bodyshell is very finely

moulded but I accentuated the engravings – particularly for door shut-lines – with an engraving tool. The body exterior was sanded with Tamiya #1000 sandpaper, cleaned with washing-up liquid, primed with Tamiya White Surface Primer then painted TS-26 Pure White via airbrush. I then sprayed a very light initial layer of two-pack varnish to protect the white during the following decalling operations. For starters, the recessed detail was highlighted with the Tamiya Black Panel Line Accent Color. This ready-to-use-colour-wash is fabulous; it easily fills the hollows via capillary action and it dries very quickly. Any excess or mistakes are easily erasable with a cloth moistened with white spirit. The air vents on the bonnet must be painted black before applying the decals. The edges were masked off with Tamiya masking tape, then to protect the rest of the body, I used Tamiya's new cover with integral plastic sheet (87164.). This is handy

because you can cover a large area in a single operation. The lower portions of the engine are moulded into the floorpan and were painted in Tamiya X-32 Titanium Silver while the rear differential was painted X-10 Gunmetal. A black colour-wash was applied to the 'engine' to accentuate the detail. The exhaust was painted Testors Burnt Metal. Contrary to the instructions, I chose not to fit the wheels at this stage but wait until the end of the assembly instead.

IN CAGE

Building the cockpit began with fitting the spare wheel. The instructions recommend fitting the wheel spokes downwards and cementing part H23 (a bag?), inside the rim. The pictures on the 'net contradict this, showing the wheel with its spokes facing upwards. The instruction booklet also suggests installing the straps' tie-down rings to the floor before installing the webbing. Don't do this, because the installation of

Masks are provided to paint the windscreen and windows. They tend to peel off easily and it is worth checking they are in place before painting

Even though the underbody will be completely hidden, the mechanical elements such engine underside, transmission and suspension are reproduced

Carbon, carbon! The pertinent parts were covered with Studio27 CF decal (size M) and then painted gloss

the straps is made even more complicated. The ends of the black ribbon straps provided are hard to pass through the loops in photo-etch hardware. To facilitate the passage of the straps through the 'eye' in each loop, the end of the webbing was stiffened with cyanoacrylate glue and then trimmed to fit. The instructions indicate the

length of the straps. For the seat harnesses, I prepared four of the same length and glued them to the crossbar (G9) before attaching it to the chassis. The OMP seats received their decals and the carbon-fibre areas were masked off with Maskol Humbrol. The fabric part of the seats then received a coat of Tamiya matt varnish.

The suspension is fully replicated and the faces of the brake discs are in photo-etched metal

It is the same for the rear differential, These fabric straps are used to secure and exhaust which was painted the spare wheel. The rings are set up Testors Burnt Metal with the straps before installing the wheel

The harness straps are reproduced with the same fabric and were attached to the rear crossbar

The seat supports and window-breakers are provided in photo-etched metal. Barely visible in the end, they nevertheless provide an undeniable touch of realism to the cockpit

The photo-etched seat brackets and windowbreakers were glued to the base of the seats and once installed in the cockpit, the straps were tensioned and glued against the seat backs. The decals were applied to the shoulder straps

and given the difficulty in placing a decal on fabric, I chose to cut out the pattern with its paper backing in place and glue it directly to the strap. The simple dashboard was quick to complete. The instructions indicate inserting the gear

The dashboard is reduced to its simplest form. The screens and steering wheel markings are faithfully reproduced by decals

V AN ADHESION PROBLEM

Masks are provided for windows but they peel off very easily and it's worth checking that they are in full contact with the window parts just before painting. The locations for the masks are embossed on the inner faces of windows for accurate placement. The opening for the cockpit ventilation is moulded in the clear plastic; a nice touch. With the wipers in place, it is better to fix the windshield (B13) inside the body before adding the taillights (D2) as these can hinder the installation of the rear window. The headlights are chrome and their front faces remain in this finish, masked off with Maskol Humbrol. Their surrounds were painted matt black and after the latex mask had been removed, any small black scales were removed with a wooden toothpick which is unlikely to damage the chrome. The body was then snapped onto the frame,

starting at the rear. The front was set up with the help of a screwdriver to ease it over the chassis. The side windows were then fixed with PVA glue which dried fast leaving no traces. The engine bonnet vents were also fixed with white glue. The radiator protection grille must be bent to shape before fitting it, again with PVA glue. Metal transfers are included for the VW logos and these were carefully positioned in the correct locations. The tail-lights are a good fit and were painted in Tamiya X-27 Clear Red using the masks provided. To optimise the use of this paint, I advise you to apply it in several light coats (about ten) which allows to the colour to gradually build up without flooding the part with the translucent liquid. The roof is covered with sensors and antennae. The grey sensor on the front (part E13) was painted with Grey Tamiya Surface Primer which is very close to the

grey of the decals. Belkits provides various small lengths of metal rod for the antennae and parts for the optional headlights. Do not rely on the instructions to find out which one to use though; based on photos I found on the 'net, I used two short black rods and two long rods for antennae. The wheel rims were painted in X-10 Gunmetal and a black colour-wash was applied around the nuts. The tyres are very narrow and their decals were flooded with solvent so they'd adhere to the sidewalls. The wheels were the last parts added, concluding the construction of this kit. Thank you once again to Belkits for providing WRC enthusiasts with a beautifully crafted kit of this champion car. There still remains some way to go for quality decals and adhesive masks and also the accuracy of the instructions, but it's a very well produced model with some nice detail and excellent overall accuracy.

The 1:24 next kit from this Belgian brand will send us in a great leap backwards; it's the Ford Escort RS1600 of 1972/1973! â—?

A SHIMMERING ILLUSION Lubomir Nikolov adds a Wolfpack resin cockpit and Eduard detail sets to Kinetic's 1:48 Mirage 2000BG

T

he Mirage 2000 is a multipurpose fighter aircraft developed and produced during the '70s by the French developer Dassault Aviation. Over 600 examples of the different versions of the aircraft were built. The model I present here is the Mirage 2000 BG, a modification made for the Hellenic Air Force. It is a double-seater aircraft with an upgraded radar, armed with Magic 2 air-to-air missiles. Its main purpose was to serve as a fighter-trainer. Greece has four aircraft with numbers 201 to 204. So, why exactly this model? First

of all I was attracted by the new (for me) brand on the market; Kinetic. Also, the impressive look of the huge canopy outshone only by the large delta-wing helped my choice. The prominent influence of the weather on the paint of the Greek machines makes the plane look like a real fighter and internet videos of Mirages flying aggressively weakened my resistance to temptation further. Last but not least, I was convinced to go ahead after long talks with a modelling friend of mine who was completely aware and fully supportive of my modelling addition!

29/04/2016 14:41

THE BEGINNING

ON

My first step was to assemble some photographic references in order to compare the original to the box contents. It wasn't a problem as the B-version doesn't differ much to the others. The only serious difference is in the cockpit, as the Greek machines don't have the LCD displays, while the Kinetic comes with one; this mistake is duplicated by the aftermarket manufacturers too. It was intentionally 'triplicated' by the me as I didn't have any choice of a quality aftermarket, plus I was determined to keep pushing forward through the project without spending time on scratchbuilding new instrument panel specific to the Greek Mirage 2000. After that, I cross-checked my references with the model. Although reasonably detailed I decided to add some aftermarket in the cockpit tub, ejector seats and exhaust nozzle. I used the Wolfpack Design cockpit plus Eduard interior and exterior sets and afterburner chamber/ exhaust nozzle by Aires. The nose of the aircraft also suffers with some slight inaccuracies, but they are not major so I didn't order the resin replacement by Kasl Hobby. After this preparatory work, I started constructing the model. The first detail was the resin cockpit by Wolfpack. After preparing the casting (cutting off the excess resin, degreasing with washing-up liquid and polishing) the cockpit tub was primed with Alclad 2 Grey Primer. The main colour used here was Lifecolor Acrylic UA 735 Deep Cockpit, a shade of dark grey. The instrument panel is a pre-coloured, self-adhesive photo-etched set by Eduard. The rest of the cockpit was brush-painted according to the instructions. To highlight the detail and to add depth to the different panels, I used 'Dark Wash' from Mig Productions, as well as 'Blue Filter'. To imitate wear and tear and for the metal bezels of the instruments I drybrushed on Agama Steel metal paste. The whole thing was then sealed with satin acrylic varnish, again from Lifecolor. The next step was to adjust the resin tub so it would fit within the fuselage halves. There was the need to slightly thin the inner surfaces of the plastic parts but it was a quick fix. The cockpit lay down in its place easily and the fuselage was closed up without any visible gaps. The use of ultra thin glues helped a lot in the process. It was harder to add the wings to the body as Kinetic used an unusual parts break down, with the underside moulded as a whole part with two upper sections. Of course this leads to less filler/putty on the belly of the aircraft, but on the other hand, a fiddly joint is created between the wings and the fuselage. I had to add some spacers in the inside of the fuselage to improve the fit between the parts and the other thing to worry about was the need to retain the join line between the wings and the fuselage – as it is seen on the real

Mr Hobby liquid putty was used to seal up small gaps between parts and the excess was removed with nail polish remover

The airframe was given a final inspection and it was then ready for primer

Alclad 2 Grey Primer was applied over the whole of the model’s exterior

The dries quickly and offers a fine finish. It was given a light polish with fine abrasive cloth

V thing – without leaving a prominent gap.

For this purpose I used some Gunze liquid putty. The excess was cleared with cotton buts and nail polish remover. This way I managed to fill the join line while keeping it similar to the other panel lines. The result was rather satisfactory! I decided to change one peculiar feature of the kit. The air intakes are blanked out so I thought that it would be good to drill them out. It brought the model to life, I think. I then added the rest of the details to the cockpit. After the finishing touches to the cockpit, I added the canopy parts, which were immersed in Future polish before gluing them, which fills fine scratches and gives the clear parts an extra sparkle. I used white glue (for wooden parts) to attach the canopy as it has a slow drying time (approximately twenty-four hours) allowing me to fine-tune the canopy's fit. After drying, it becomes transparent. For the small gaps I used again Gunze liquid putty. The excessive putty was removed with make-up cotton and nail polish remover. For masking I used paper masking tape which was first sketched on with a pencil directly onto the part and then carefully cut out with a scalpel.

Lifecolor acrylics were used to create the camouflage

Various materials including oil paints and pre-mixed washes were used to weather the Mirage, giving it a mildly dirty appearance

PRIMING AND PAINTING

I added few small photo-etched details to the exterior and then prepared the model for primer. Again I used the proven Alclad 2 Grey Primer with micro filler. It has quick drying time, it is durable, covers small imperfections and is great for polishing. For this step I used 3600, 6000 and 8000-grit Alclad 2 polishing cloths. So now I was ready for pre-shading. After I was done with the pre-shading step it was time for the next one, painting. It was a challenge to decide what colours and what brand to use. Judging by my photos, the Greek Mirages are painted in bright Mediterranean blue tones. I chose acrylics from the Lifecolor range; UA098, UA026, UA027. After applying the base colours, the camouflage was done freehand, no masks used. This ensured an elegant feathering of the different colour boundaries. After each layer I used 4000 and 6000-grit polishing cloths to smooth out the painted finish. The final step was a layer of Future polish.

DECALS

My personal feeling here is that the decals were a big disappointment. They are thick and did not respond to adhesives and softeners. The biggest let-down were their colours. The HAF insignia are dark blue, but the ones provided by Kinetic are pale blue, so they look more like Argentinian. Unfortunately I discovered this only after it was too late. I didn't have any preliminary information on this and the person to 'blame' for the discovery was a friend of mine! After a thin final layer of satin varnish I was ready to wade into my favourite part of modelling; the weathering. Panel lines were highlighted

A thin layer of satin varnish was used to seal in the various weathering effects and to homogenise the surface finish

with a dark colour-wash. After that, I did some fading on the upper surfaces with Mig Productions oil paints; Faded Navy Blue, Brick Red and Snow White. I also added some streaks with Dark Streaking Grime. The last touch was to apply a thin layer of satin varnish and to gently polish it.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

At the start, I thought I would use the kit-supplied landing gear legs, but after I attached them I found that the model was unstable. That forced me to buy the metal landing gear by Scale Aircraft Conversions. Unfortunately they had copied the original parts without any added detail, so I had to add the hydraulic lines myself. I also reworked the landing lights by adding the light bulbs, reflectors and cables. The reflectors were filled with ultra thin super glue which I polished after drying. So my Mirage was finally on its legs! After that I painted and fitted the wheel well doors.

This overview shows the soft-edges between camouflage colours and the subtle levels of weathering applied by the author

THE EXHAUST NOZZLE

As already mentioned, the jet can was replaced with a Aires resin set and its construction was straightforward, without any problems. The chamber was painted with Alclad 2 Exhaust Manifold (Alc-123) and I created a slight sheen with Pale Gold (Alc-108). The nozzle itself was drybrushed with Agama metal paste; Silver, Steel and Annealed Steel. All this was sealed in with satin varnish and weathered with some Mig Dark Wash and after it dried I cemented the nozzle to the model.

U

For added strength, the author used undercarriage from Scale Aircraft Conversions, which are cast in metal. Brake lines were added using fine wire

The kit’s jet exhaust was replaced by a super-detailed item from Czech manufacturer Aires (Eye-rez). It consists of cast resin jet pipe and afterburner can plus photo-etched internal details. The metallic areas were finished with Alclad 2 colours, weathered with pre-mixed washes and metallic pastes

Mini Review... MATHOMODELS 1:35 BROKEN WALL ITEM no; 35022 www.mathomodels.com

This simple but very useful set provides one large and one small section of very broken-down dry wall, perfect to combine with the groundwork of a small diorama or a figure vignette. The parts are finely detailed and cast in porous plaster, which can be used to the modeller’s advantage as it mimics the graininess of a real wall’s stones.

TANKS V FUEL As a base colour for the underwing

drop-tanks, I used Duralumin (Alc-102). The various caps and inspection locks were painted Pale Gold (Alc-108). The noses of the tanks were covered with masking fluid and then painted with Lifecolor UA098. My goal was to imitate paint stripped to metal, an effect seen on many Mirage 2000 photos. I finished the parts with Dark Wash, Kerosene Stains by AK-Interactive and gloss varnish by Lifecolor. Before I fitted the armament and fuel tanks I add some applied some extra leaks, stains and dirt on the underside of the model with Brown Wash by Mig Productions, Kerosene Stains and Dark Streaking Grime by AK-Interactive. It was then time to install the ejection seats, the opening parts of the canopy and the rest of the antennae. The Martin Baker Mk.X seats are resin replacements made by Wolfpack. What I really enjoyed was the fact that the seatbelts were cast integrally with the seats and they really look very realistic. After I'd dropped them in place I masked the moving sections of the canopy, added some small photo-etched details such as hand grabs and mirrors and then painted them. With all the final parts in place, I called it done.

The undersides of an aircraft are usually much dirtier than the top, so this was reflected in the model’s weathering

DISPLAY BASE

My idea was to keep the display as simple and elegant as I could. From my local carpenter, I ordered a simple wooden base and for the airbase tarmac I used one of the Noy's Miniature range. I also designed two photo-etched plates for the base, one with the name and model of the plane and the other one with its manufacturer. I placed Eduard's FOD covers next to the model and it was complete!

CONCLUSION

After all was done, I believe the Kinetic kit turned out to be a really good looking Mirage 2000. Yes, it has some annoying errors and omissions like the insignia colours and the instrument panels, but it doesn't affect my satisfaction when looking at the finished model. I think that it lost some of its Mediterranean appeal after all the weathering but it's a necessary step that brings a model to life. I hope you like it and enjoy this review as much as I enjoyed building it. Keep modelling! ●

MAGNIFICENT MOSQUITO!

T

amiya's new 1:32 DeHavilland Mosquito FB Mk.VI is a staggeringly comprehensive kit of this iconic WW2 British fighterbomber. It comes with two, complete Merlin engines with super-thin cowlings attached with micro magnets. The engines' bearers and firewalls feature some excellent detail, from plumbing and cabling to ancillaries, fireextinguishers and more. The exhausts are multi-part designs with a choice of two types; five and two-outlet designs. The engine nacelles feature structural detail on their inner faces, supplemented with four photoetched ribs on either side plus a hinge rail for the undercarriage doors, offering a neat attachment solution for the latter components. The model has complete cockpit with padded pilot's seat, photo-etched harnesses, multi-layer instrument panels featuring clear dial lenses, decal dial faces and photo-etched panel facias for ultimate detail. The four, Browning

.303 machine guns in the nose are depicted in full with detailed renditions of the ammo hoppers and feeds within the nose-cone; a lift-off cover allows this fabulous detail to be shown off after completion. The main wing is supported by an internal, box-section spar offering great strength, necessary for a large-scale model with a significant wingspan. None of the control surfaces are hinged, but they are posable in neutral or drooped positions. When you look at the sheer size of the model's wheels, it becomes apparent that they are key focal points, so Tamiya have moulded the tyre treads in small sections allowing maximum detail to be preserved on the parts with no hard-to-remove moulding seams that would be unavoidable in a flexible material. Also, the tyres come with the exact degree of weighted 'sag' on their ground contact points, something that would be close to impossible to recreate in a perfectly round vinyl tyre; just brilliant.

THE MOSQUITO IS TAMIYA'S NEWEST AND ARGUABLY MOST EXCITING 1:32 AIRCRAFT KIT AND IS A MUST-HAVE FOR THE ENTHUSIASTIC MODELLER.

PROWLING PANTHER Back in Issue 242 (December 2015), we took an initial look at the new 1:35 Panther ausf.D from Tamiya. This time, Erik Dreister takes a second look and places the model in a grassy scene from the battle of Kursk, summer 1943

T

he Panther was characterised by its sloping amour (inspired by the T-34, the opponent it had to overcome) and was armed

with a Kwk42 7.5cm L/70 gun allowing it to effectively tackle all its rivals. Curiously, it was the D version of the tank that was the first to go into

production but production delays were experienced from the start, the first vehicle being completed in January 1943. It was not until late May that

its first users – the newly formed 51st and 52nd Panzer Battalions – were each equipped ninety-six examples of the vehicle. In June that year, the

51st and 52nd Battalions were integrated into the 39th Panzer Regiment for 'Operation Citadel', an assault on the Soviet salient around the city of Kursk. The Panther had been quickly dispatched from the factory and with the lack of development and crew training, the results were disappointing. On the evening of July 10th, mechanical problems and combat losses had reduced the number of operational Panthers to just ten. But despite these teething

troubles, the Panther enjoyed great success later in the war, and became one of the most iconic tanks of the Axis forces until the end of the conflict. Until quite recently, there has not been a Panther ausf.D in Tamiya's 1:35 Military Miniatures Series; an older kit of the ausf.A in 1975 and a series of Panther 'Gs in the 1990s, but no 'D. This was rectified in 2015 and the kit is now recognised as a highly accurate and easy-to-build replica of the vehicle. As highlighted in Issue

242, Tamiya created a few additional upgrade parts for this model, available to buy separately. A set of articulated tracks in injection-moulded plastic (12665), ventilation grilles for the engine deck in photo-etched brass (12666) and a machined alloy gun barrel (12664) that comes with a detailed gun breech. Although the soft vinyl tracks that come with the kit are commendable, the separate optional links provide a distinct improvement and I used them readily.

The PE ventilation grilles are essential and I also incorporated them into the model. I passed on the gun barrel set because I chose to install the commander figure the cupola and thus the breech would not be visible. On the other hand, the original plastic gun tube is formed from one piece of polystyrene (plus muzzle brake) without a moulding line and it already looks really good as it is. I now invite you to follow this photo story to see my take on this excellent kit. â—?

The optional track links were used on this model. Each link is in two parts; the author preferred to cement the guide teeth in place before trimming each part from the sprue. Then they just click together, eighty-five links forming each side

The cooling fans over the two large radiators are faithfully represented as individual moulding and were be painted in red primer colour before being fitted. They are barely visible once the photo-etched grilles have been fitted

The author made a simple representation of the vision blocks within the cupola using plastic card, again barely visible once the model is finished but filling a gap inside

The woven nylon cord for the tow rope was fitted with its towing eyes and then attached to the model. The tool support tubes were drilled through with a mini drill

The figures provided in the kit fit inside the cupola and behind the turret. The aforementioned plastic card vision blocks are just visible around the commander figure

All the tools are perfectly reproduced. They mount onto frames on each side of the hull and need little else doing to them, unless you really want to add photo-etched clamps

The spare tracks are also composed of two parts each; link and guide-tooth. Some Tamiya putty was applied at the joints where visible. The level of detail is excellent, including the very fine, perfectly reproduced track pins

All elements on the hull front are perfectly reproduced; the texture of the driver and radio operator’s hatch is superb. The gun crutch, here in the lowered position, can remain workable, as can the driver’s hatch located on the glacis plate

The set of optional photo-etched screens add to the realism of this area of the model and they fit perfectly; well worth spending money on

The outlets of the exhaust pipes were expanded with a dental burr and two small sections of stretched sprue were fitted inside, vertically. The jack supports were completed with two small plastic card strips Panther clips

p 32-38 Panther 248MN.indd 34

The second tanker figure, bent over and leaning on the back of the turret in a very realistic pose is perfectly suited to the form of the model. We can appreciate the quality of the facial features of the figures, which have improved dramatically in recent times

29/04/2016 14:45

Remembering the advice from TMMI's Editor many years ago, the author decided to do some pre-shading on the model, once primed in grey. For this, XF-9 Flat Brown with a little XF-1 Flat Black was used, airbrushed into the recesses of the model's surface

The Dark Yellow base colour (XF-60) was applied in several thin coats via airbrush. Three or four passes were necessary to allow the right amount of paint build-up, without affecting the pre-shading effect. A little gloss varnish (X-22) was added to these colours to help with the application of the weathering to follow

The three-colour camouf lage (see page 66 this issue) was app lied via airbrush, using Tamiya acrylic colo urs XF-64 Red Brown and XF-5 Flat Gre en. The paints were heavily diluted with Tamiya X20a Acrylic Thinner

The markings come from the decal sheet supplied in the box . The author changed the numbers from ‘745’ to ‘742’ in order to customise the model in a subtle way. The decals were affixed with the help of Microscale softener

General surface wear, scuffing from the crews’ boots and rust spots help to complete the realistic appearance of the Panther's massive armour plate hull and turret

Several colour-washes were layered up using various brown and black shades to intensify the effects. To simulate traces of oil, a small amount of gloss enamel paint was added to the black colour-wash and applied around the filler cap

The exhaust pipes were painted by brush using rusty tones of brown acrylics and highlighted with Tamiya rusty-orange coloured pigments from the Weathering Master set

To reproduce the dust raised by the movement of the vehicle, the underbody, running gear and side armour plates were treated with a little Desert Yellow (XF-59). The airbrush was used with very low air pressure to create this natural splashed effect

The two rows of six spare track links each side were first painted a very dark brown colour by hand, then patinated with rust-coloured pigments to create the effect we see here

Metal parts, tools and tow cable were enhanced with gunmetal-coloured pigments from the Tamiya pigment set 87085, again! They were applied with the sponge provided in the set

By using a graphite-tipped Faber Castel pencil, the author created various worn steel effects, mainly around the commander's hatch and on other locations that would be subject to additional wear and tear fro crew access etc

The commander and gunner figures provided in the kit box are the perfect to accompaniment for the Panther and the poses are well thought out. Detail on their uniforms is excellent too

The tracks were first painted brown, then drybrushed with a chrome colour (XF-11). Highly diluted colour-washes of Desert Yellow (XF-59) and Buff (XF-57) were applied to give them a more ‘operational’ look

The chosen location was finished off with a small footpath that represents the campaign trail snaking through the middle of the battlefield The minimalist grass matt was installed on a lightweight base. It was painted in similar colours to the model presented here

The Panther’s tracks were cut into the synthetic-grass matt, then the model was glued to its location with epoxy adhesive to give it a positive location and to suggest the weight of the tank

KIT PREVIEW EDUARD 1:48 MESSERSCHMITT BF109G-6 LATE SERIES ● KIT NO.82111

Eduard have completely re-engineered their Bf109G-6 to account for errors made in the initial release. Here's the new kit, plus the accessories available for it

O G D N O C E S S ' V A T S U G B

ack in 2014, Eduard released an all new kit of the Messerschmitt Bf109G-6 in 1:48. It was a beautifully engineered model with an excellent fit of parts, fine decals and a host of add-on detail parts. All this was fine, but there was a problem; the model's airframe was too big. Not by a massive amount, but just enough for it to look too large when compared to other models. On its own,

it made a very good-looking Bf109, but for the Gustav cognoscenti – who have at their hands a vast wealth of information on the aircraft – it wasn't good enough. The news was out and the model was pretty well savaged online but, instead of ignoring the problem, Eduard put their war-face on and re-tooled the model to the correct dimensions, addressing some other detail issues along the way.

The result is what you see here; without question the best Bf109G-6 kit in 1:48 and most likely the best Gustav across all scales, so far. It makes the perfect partner/opponent for the company's sublime Spitfire kits. The model comes in Eduard's familiar blueish grey polystyrene and the fuselage/wings are rendered with exquisitely subtle recessed panel junction-lines and rivets. There is a total

of 186 parts in this material, plus a further fourteen on the clear sprue, although there are quite a few components marked as 'not for use'. The upper engine cowling is moulded individually, offering the choice of two types of upper MG trough. All control surfaces are moulded separately for overall realism and the modeller can fit them in an offset position should they choose. Three types of rudder

Eduard accessories for the new-tool Bf109G-6 Eduard have released a suite of accessories and detail parts that work with their re-tooled Gustav kit, allowing the modeller to really go to town with their model, should they wish. Here is what's currently on offer... A

A. Brassin Bf109G-6 cockpit (648240) A complete replacement cockpit in resin and photo-etched brass. Some work with a curved scalpel blade will be needed to remove the moulded-in sidewall detail on the kit's inner fuselage, clearly indicated in the set's instructions. Lots of perfectly cast resin and photo-etched brass pieces here and skill with these materials will be essential. Even though the cockpit aperture of a 1:48 Bf109 is tiny, the set is the ultimate in detail and it will be a pleasurable challenge to assemble and paint it B. Brassin Bf109G-6 radio compartment (648239)

Pre-coloured instrument panel will be found on the PE fret Decals are immaculate and provide lots of data stencils

A little surgery will be required to fit this set, which depicts the radio compartment in the rear fuselage. Not just the radio and its rack are provided, but also a pair of 'liners' that represent the fuselage's ribbed inner surfaces. Not a great deal can be seen through the open access panel but it's a beautifully detailed addition nonetheless

B

C

D

C. Brassin Bf109G exhaust stacks (648247) are included, along with three styles of vertical fin as well. The clear sprue now includes three variations of forward canopy/windscreen (subtle differences between them), plus three 'Erla' type main canopy sections. This is a 'ProfiPACK' release and as such comes with a photo-etched fret that carries a pre-painted instrument panel, rudder pedals, pilot's seat harnesses, radiator faces (mesh pattern) plus other small parts. Eduard's always-handy pre-cut canopy masks are also provided. Five varied decal options are offered and Eduard also include a sheet of airframe data stencils. This is a wonderful production that accurately represents the subject, with great panache too. The detail is state of the art and I am informed by my colleague Brett Green that the fit of parts is very precise (I'll find this out for myself at a later stage) and the in-box accessories are well thought out and useful. Highly recommended. ● MN MODEL SPEC EDUARD MESSERSCHMITT BF109G-6 LATE SERIES KIT NO.82111 SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:48 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . These resin-cast exhausts depict the weld seam that runs on the outer face of each outlet plus extra detail at their bases. Well worth the investment

E

D. Brassin Bf109 cannon pods 648246) In this pack you'll find a pair of MG151 20mm guns plus their rounded housings. Superb detail and the pods can be depicted in the open position to show off the MG151s. Very appealing add-on parts and easy to assemble/fit

F

E. WGr.21 for Bf109 (648245) In this set we have a pair of Werfer-Granate 21cm rockets – essentially modified Nebelwerfer 42 rounds – plus their launch tubes and mounting brackets. Two whole rockets are supplied, should you wish to show them before loading, plus just the tips that sit in the open ends of the launcher tubes for a 'loaded' configuration. A very useful jig is included so the bracket legs are fixed to the aircraft's wing at the correct angle

G

F. Bf109G-6 photo-etched details (48885) A small but useful sheet of brass parts for the main UC doors, radiator flaps and other small parts H

G. Bf109G-6 fabric seatbelts (49093) Delicate and accurate laser-cut seat harness webbing (precoloured) plus photo-etched buckle hardware Indispensable. H. Bf109G-6 seatbelts Superfabric (49093) A simpler but visually effective approach to replicate the pilot's seat belts, printed in multiple colours

I

I. Bf109G spinner spirals (EX512) Self-adhesive masks for the painting of the tricky-to-execute spirals seen on many Bf109 propeller spinner bosses. Four styles are provided; extremely useful

The set includes five, 30ml glass bottles of high quality cellulose-based (lacquer) paints; Fluorescent Red, Fluorescent Orange, Semi-Gloss Black, Metallic Silver and White. The paints must be airbrushed over a coat of primer rather than applied directly to kit plastic and they will need a gloss topcoat where appropriate. Highly recommended. www.mrpaint.sk Mr Paint is a new name in paint manufacturing (to TMMI at least) and they already have an extensive range of colours for a variety of subjects, which are mostly aircraft, but also some armour too. The paints come in 30ml glass jars with pellets inside to agitate the settled pigment and have cellulose-based (lacquer) solvent. This means that a primer will be essential when spraying on kit plastic, as the liquid part of the paint can attack the plastic. From a quick test, the paints are extremely finely grained and from reports by Spencer Pollard, Editor of TMMI's sister magazine Model Airplane International, they airbrush beautifully well. We also received a grey primer, liquid cement, semi-matt varnish and basic white. More feedback on these materials soon in TMMI. VW T1 SAMBA BUS LUFTHANSA www.revell.de/en, @RevellGermany or facebook.com/revell SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 07436 Revell’s VW Samba Bus is a superb kit, packed with detail that includes upper engine parts (the lower areas are moulded in with the floor pan) and a comprehensive cabin interior comprising three rows of seating with grab rails on the seat-backs and walls. The roof panel is moulded as a separate part with cut-outs for the eight skylights and a sunroof with optional folded-extended ‘cloth’ parts. Detail is exemplary throughout. In the latest edition of the kit, Revell have provided some beautiful new decals for an early Lufthansa scheme of yellow and blue and some precise masking will be needed, as the yellow markings will need to be applied over a white background for them to look nice and bright. Oddly, the big VW badge does not figure on the boxtop artwork. MN

BRITISH GRENADIER QUEEN’S GUARDS www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:16 MATERIALS; IM KIT NUMBER; 16001 This new 1:16 figure is a stylish departure for ICM, representing an iconic British military image, a Queen’s Guardsman, kit No.1 in the company’s ‘World’s Guards’ series. The figure is standing to attention as you would see outside St James’ Palace in London and is one of the sights that a visitor to the city might wish to photograph. The figure is moulded in grey polystyrene on a single sprue anf the parts breakdown in the conventional manner, with the body and limbs in halves. An impressively detailed, onepiece rifle (bayonnet fixed) comes on its own sprue and a display plinth with a choice four surfaces is also supplied; tarmac, flagstones, brick and cobbles. Detail is very good and the bearskin is as well done as it can be in plastic; once assembled, it could benefit from some work with a pyrogravure tool to amplify the fur effect. MN Great subject choice and ideal for HM Queen’s 90th birthday year Bearskin is good, but might need a little work to enhance the fur effect

F6F-5N NIGHTFIGHTER WEEKEND EDITION www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 7434 Eduard have issued their exquisite 1:72 Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat in nightfighter form and it’s a ‘Weekend Edition’ kit too, meaning it comes without photo-etched parts or canopy masks and should therefore be quicker to build, although a weekend might be pushing it for many modellers! The detail on the airframe exterior is extremely fine, as it is in the cockpit, so photo-etched parts are more of an optional rather than an essential accessory. The wing-mounted radar pod is moulded in upper and lower halves and simply slips onto the starboard wing, instantly identifying the aircraft as a night-fighting machine. Assembly is quite straightforward (although there are still some very small parts for the cockpit, so good tweezers are essential) and would be suitable for an enthusiastic modeller with a few aircraft builds under their belt. Fantastic subject and gorgeous detail. MN

Since then, the company has produced a couple of AFV kits, the newest of which is the Pz.II L Luchs and again, they have pushed the manufacturing process to its limits to create some of the smallest and finest polystyrene parts we’ve ever seen. (Check out the S-hooks above right). The tank is small anyway so in 1:72 it is tiny, but the model looks like a scaled-down 1:35 kit; it is pin-sharp with flawless mouldings. A sheet of photo-etched brass parts are provided for the very finest and thinnest components and the cherry on top is a seated commander figure, cast in resin. An amazing model in all respects and an impressive achievement. MN

It was made from 1951 to 1968 and thus the main conflicts in which it was utilised were the Korean and Vietnam wars. Roden’s model comes on five sprues of grey polystyrene plus one in clear and one in flexible black vinyl for the tyres. A full engine and gearbox is included, plus a ladder chassis, leaf-spring suspension and steerable front wheels, plus a two-part radiator for better detail. The cabin comes with all foot pedals and levers and decals are provided for the instrument panel dials. The canvas tops come as moulded parts and are quite nicely done, although the rear cover is moulded in the ‘lowered’ position; on the boxtop it’s in the more visually appealing raised configuration. GERMAN 3T 4X2 CARGO TRUCK W/2CM FLAK 38 www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS KIT NUMBER; 6828 Dragon have combined their excellent Opel Blitz three-ton truck from a handful of years ago with their equally excellent Flak 38 gun to create this improvised anti-aircraft vehicle and it makes an appealing subject for a model project. The truck features a well detailed engine, and the engine covers (with their beautiful, open-moulded louvres) are designed to be fitted in either the closed or open position so the powerplant can be seen. The rest of the truck is equally thorough, with a very detailed underbody and cargo deck. It’s really important that the modeller reads through the instruction sheet before beginning the kit, as the crew seating shown in stage 11 must be left out to allow the installation of the ‘sled’ for the Flak gun in step 19. Otherwise, a very fine kit of an interesting subject and perfect for dioramas; it can be painted in grey or three-colour camouflage. Recently arrived at TMMI is the (Chinese-made) Iraqi Army Type 69-II, which depicts a bar-armoured machine as would have been encountered in the Gulf War. The kit features a detailed lower hull, well depicted suspension swing-arms and road wheels that build up into pairs, from two rims and separate tyres. Photo-etched mesh panels are included for the engine deck and the tracks come as a bag of individual links that must be cemented together. One fiddly job that must usually be done is to make the connections between the fender fuel-cells, but here, Takom have done it for us with well moulded pipework (bottom right), an excellent inclusion. The turret bar-armour is well depicted and realistic-looking and decals for one of six machines are included. More on this superb kit soon! WILD HOUSE MODELS 1:32 ORCA HOVER BIKE

ild House Models is a British model company, making some fabulously imaginative kits of science-fiction subjects from possible futures, in familiar modelling scales. Their latest is the 1:32 ‘Ordinance and Reconnaissance Covert Avenger’ (ORCA), a type of high-speed hover bike used by both civilian and military services. The kit is cast in grey resin and the quality is flawless. The box states that the casting was done by ‘Blap Models’, a professional company who make prototypes for industrial purposes, hence the professional grade parts. Detail is extensive

and finely rendered across all parts, including the pilot who comes with a choice of heads; helmeted with a face mask (ideal if you’re not so good at painting skin tones) and bare-headed with goggles (ideal if you can paint skin, but not eyes). The kit has a remarkable number of parts (fifty) but the fold-out instruction sheet is clear and easy to follow, so no problems there; all the modeller must do is ensure the minor casting marks (where the part has been pre-snipped from the sprue) are filed and sanded down completely so the parts fit together as intended. A 20.5cm by 14.5cm decal sheet is included

and it provides hundreds of markings suitable for a futuristic machine such as the ORCA. The designs are superb; ‘biohazard’, ‘medical’, ‘no push’, ‘no step’ and many more symbols are on the sheet, along with warning strips, data stencils, logos, badges and more; the left-over decals will be very useful for your future sciencefiction model builds. A creative kit with excellent production values; full-build article coming soon to TMMI. ● MN MODEL SPEC WILD HOUSE MODELS 1:32 ORCA HOVER BIKE SCALE; . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:32 MATERIALS: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .R, WS AVAILABILITY; Wild House Models; www.wildhousemodels.com

PETR DOLEŽAL, CANFORA GRAPHIC DESIGN & PUBLISHING www.canfora.se ISBN 978-91-982325-1-6 This is an interesting new book from Swedish publishers Canfora Graphic Design and Publishing, looking at some less well known un-armoured vehicles from the Second World War period. Naturally, the subjects are largely cars and trucks pressed into military service, running from Mercedes-Benz staff cars, Czechmade Praga lorries, Citroën trucks, Matfords, Magirus and Opel Blitzs, but also shown are some oddities such as a lovely BMW 326 car in Polish hands (with the Union Flag on its front wing!), and photos showing the SU-57 which was the American T48 GMC halftrack as used by the Russians on the Lend-Lease plan; the big v-shaped markings on the engine covers would make an interesting alternative version for a model. There are many, many more fascinating subjects here, not least the Hanomag, Krupp Bulldog and Fordson tractors in Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe ‘ownership’, but my favourites are the extraordinary-looking Schneider H-chassis’ truck whose original purpose was a refuse lorry, plus the hilarious pedal-powered Velocars being driven by German troops. A fascinating and original production. MN

STATIONS OF COASTAL COMMAND THEN AND NOW

DAVID SMITH, AFTER THE BATTLE www.afterthebattle.com ISBN 1-870067-87-8 The latest volume from British publisher ‘After the Battle’ has arrived at TMMI and the subject choice is a vital but often overlooked part of the WW2 RAF war effort, Coastal Command. As its name suggests, the job of this branch of the Royal Air Force was to patrol Britain’s coastline and into the surrounding seas to defend against U-boats and other enemy naval threats. The Command’s fifty-three bases ranged from Iceland to Gibraltar via Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, the Cornish Peninsula and the Azores and all of them are chronicled in this book. The author – David Smith, who worked as an air traffic controller at Liverpool Airport – makes use of some fascinating aerial photographs of the sites during wartime and as they appear now, supplemented by ground-level images of the bases and their surroundings, again as they appeared during the conflict and what remains today. The military archeologist in me has always been fascinated by ATB’s productions (I collected the magazines as a young lad) and so this latest book is completely enthralling, with some amazing snippets of information, the ‘Donegal Corridor’ being just one example. There are plenty of photos of the aircraft crews and their machines of course, the principal types being the Short Sunderland (of course) the B-24 Liberator, Halifax, Catalina, Hudson, Wellington, Anson, Beaufighter and others. The book will keep you fascinated for hours; another wonderful production from this publisher. MN

he history of this build started in 2004 while I was working in Tokyo. While on one of our many visits to Tokyu Hands in Shibuya, a friend and I trawled the model shop on the top floor looking for the more unusual offerings. We were amazed to find Nazi dolls and all sorts of Manga-style characters. Naturally I came away with several models and tools, including two simple Gundam models of my own. My friend bought this Gundam kit that took her fancy after seeing the made up example in one of the display cases. Back home in the UK she never made the kit and several years later she relocated to Australia, so I inherited the kit hoping I would make it one day. Fast forward to 2012 and having thought about the Gundam kit for years, I started researching and working out how to go about building it with a view to using the model as a test bed to experiment with painting and weathering techniques I wanted to develop for myself. I scoured the 'net for other Gundam and Mecha builds and there are some fantastic images for inspiration. I also looked at splinter camouflage and various colour schemes that looked attractive to my eye. Not knowing anything about the history, story lines or background to the Gundam world, I figured I would embrace my naivety and imagine my own background narrative to this machine calling on inspiration from sci-fi films, designs & artwork. After enough time ruminating on the ideas, I opted for a machine built from different materials – metals that rust and degrade with wear, lightweight composites that don’t exhibit chipped paint, and alloys that don’t rust but with heavily chipped paint. The colour scheme would display a mix of Luftwaffe splinter pattern on the outer panels and wings in the mid and sea blues of WWII US Navy fighters crossed with the JASDF F-2 blues. The inner colours would be earth and sand colours that were the original colour scheme for the whole machine. To create contrast and add

All the sub-assembly parts stored in a makeshift paper box. The parts stayed like this in a drawer for months while I contemplated what to do with the model.

The planning stage. First I laid the parts out to photograph them in their respective positions with a view to post-processing the photo to bring out the contrast in preparation to import the image into Illustrator.

Browns and orange (X-9, XF-9, XF-64 & X-6) were sprayed on the ‘metal’ parts that were to show rust. This was applied in a modulated fashion to create highlights and low-lights.

FULL-BUILD: GUNDAM BANDAI 1:100 STRIKE FREEDOM GUNDAM ZGMF-X20A ● KIT NO.0148083

The ‘lighter weight aluminium’ parts received a coat of Alclad 2 Airframe Aluminium.

The ‘composite’ parts received a thin layer of X-1 Black, spraying the thinned paint like a heavy pre-shading, rather than a solid black layer, allowing the grey primer to still show in the highlight areas.

The guns received a layer of Nato Black XF-69 with some details picked out in brown and Nato green. These were then scratched up with a tired old course sanding stick and the tip of a scalpel blade.

V more interest, the outermost

tips of the wings and feet would be yellow like the tips on propeller blades, and the unit identification colour would be dull red as seen on fuselage bands on WWII German fighters. I photographed the parts splayed out and then created an illustrator file to help visualise the design and colour layout to help me follow my plan in exactly the same way as a regular (actual) colour scheme layout of a mainstream model kit. The base kit comes in a modest sized A4 sized box with colour, top-opening

The ankle bands received successive layers of camouflage colour and masking fluid that was then roughly removed leaving flakes of paint and fluid to impart the look of the paint just falling off the aluminium structure.

lid. The instructions are delightfully 100% Japanese in style and language. The illustrations are so good that you don’t need to read the hieroglyphic text and the short pictorial introduction shows you how to remove the parts from the sprues. The coloured plastic parts are all labelled and listed on their sprue layout inside the front page making the build as easy as it gets. There are numerous polycaps, washers and joints to be trapped between the sections of limbs and structure. No glue is needed to build this, but I did cement the

The rusty areas were then stippled with liquid masking fluid with a torn sponge. Following advice I’ve read about “less is more”, I tried to keep this subtle but I think I still managed to overdo the effect.

The tips of the wings and feet were undercoated with white before spraying the warm yellow before the next layers of camouflage were applied.

main sub-assemblies simply out of habit. There are twenty-three easy steps to follow – so easy my seven year-old nephew would have no problem making this as his first model.

PAINTING ORDER

To unify the colour of all the parts (the plastic is moulded in white, blue, red and yellow) I first primed the parts with Vallejo Grey Primer, then grouped the parts according to their colour and final finish, treating each with its own approach. The inner body parts were

The Flat Earth and Desert Sand colours have been sprayed to the inner rusty parts here. Some of the masking fluid is removed to see how the effect and contrast looks with the previous rust colours underneath.

first sprayed with a mix of browns and oranges to undercoat them, ready to show the rusting of these heavy metal parts. Liquid mask was sponged on next and the parts sprayed with XF-72 JGSDF Brown and XF-59 Desert Yellow. The aluminium parts were sprayed with Alclad II Airframe Aluminium and the wings, feet and hands sprayed X-1 Black. More masking fluid was sponged onto the ankle bands, and next the splinter camouflage was sprayed in order of lightest colour first, to finish with the darkest.

This recently issued set is for Tamiya’s 1:48 German 3 ton 4x2 cargo truck’ (Opel Blitz) and provides items such as tool clamps, number plates, dashboard (with dials on clear acetate), foot pedals, mechanical indicators, headlight brackets, convoy triangle, flag holder, cargo body fittings, wipers and the all-important Opel Blitz badge for the grille.

The yellow and red were the last colours to be sprayed using white as a base coat to help bring out the contrast. X-8 Yellow was mixed with X-6 Orange to warm up its colour temperature and the X-7 Red was toned down using XF-9 Hull Red. It comes as no surprise that the next step was to remove (most) of the masking fluid by picking and rubbing it away, then following with a gloss coat of Future in readiness for the decals. I had been looking online to mail order decals but hadn’t decided and during a few days off work in Sydney, found a set that looked right in a model shop down-under. After sealing the decals in with another gloss coat, I realised what the phrase 'in register' means when I read reviews of model kits. The decals on the sheet look fine, but on a dark background the white is way off the red, so I opted to live with this and move on. The model, after all, is imaginary and purely for me and to develop and learn some new techniques. A major lesson leaned – check that the printing of the decals are in register... Next was the stage I was really looking forward to; making it look like it has had a life. On all the parts I used Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color (Black) to accentuate the details. The wings received a generous application of 'Soot' and 'Mud' from the Tamiya weathering sets. These sets are a little greasy and ‘stick’ quite well to a gloss surface. I’ve become a fan of these small make-up boxes, applying the weathering pigment with cotton buds and paint brushes is very simple and I find very controllable. The dusty, sooty layer on the wings was then broken up. I played around with wiggling and scratching a toothpick through the sooty layer and I’m quite pleased with the result. The technique is nothing more than that; wiggling and scratching! The next stage was to try some rust streaks. I used oil paints for this and taking time and patience to build up the layers, again it seemed easier than I had imagined. This is the first time I’d tried these techniques and gave

U

An interim check to see how the mix of colours look together and get a feel for the overall composition. Like stepping back from a painting when you’ve been working in close up for a while and you have trouble seeing the wood for the trees.

I saw this trick online – using a container full of sand creates a stable foundation to plant the parts mounted on wooden barbecue skewers. This meant I could spray each part with gloss ready for the decals, picking each part out one at a time and replanting it without the fear of the whole lot toppling over, which it most certainly would if I used a polystyrene block as the parts together make for a very top heavy arrangement.

The wings were glossed in stages as there was no obvious ‘handle’. One side was sprayed, then left to dry thoroughly, then flipped and sprayed again. This was done a few times to get a nice smooth glossy surface.

Application of decals started with the wings. I used some from the spares stash and lots of the tiny markings from the Gundam decal sheet noticing the red and white were significantly (in this scale) out of register. Not to worry I thought, as this is just a test bed for me – no one will see it of course! (Until I talked to our Editor about the project!)

More decals applied from the Gundam set and the spares stash. Embracing creativity and naivety I placed the decals where I thought they looked good to my eye. They may be placed incorrectly according to Gundam law, but this was a ‘go with your gut’ approach to experiment with an imagined machine.

stage took a few weeks – allowing time to step away and come back to the effects with fresh eyes, allowing the oil paints to dry thoroughly and continuing life in the real world.

Experimenting with creating rust streaks, chipping and general degradation. The rust was created using thinned artist oil paints. The scratches were made with randomly rolling a silver pencil over the feet.

CONCLUSION

Granted this model has taken years to be realised, but I’m not aware of a rulebook that says there is a time limit to these things. Despite the decals and the time it took to finish the kit (and subsequently discovering I built the kit with the wings on upside down) I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. On the back of trying these techniques for myself (rust, streaking dirt, chipping) I have tackled a couple more projects, challenging myself to explore more weathering techniques. I’m thankful to have been given this model and the freedom to experiment with it, I feel my confidence has grown as a result! The modular, no glue approach is a refreshing lift and being able to pose the model after painting breathes life into it after the ‘work’ is done. I highly recommend exploring your creativity and trying one of these kits, it appears that there are a whole raft of scales and complexity to the Gundam scale model world; just imagine the possibilities… ●

Some shading was added with thinned black acrylic to the inner surfaces and vents. These steps in the process were carried out over a period of weeks allowing the paint to dry thoroughly and giving myself plenty of down time to come back to the effects with fresh eyes and keep the effects uniform across all the parts.

The Editor’s Page... An interesting but significant find in a private armour collection

IT’S THOSE THREE COLOURS AGAIN

O

ne of armour modelling’s perennial debates centres on the World War Two German three-colour camouflage of Dunkelgelb (Dark Yellow), Rotbraun (Red Brown) and Olivgrün (Olive Green). This scheme was introduced in 1943 and in wartime photographs we can observe many variations in the patterns and colours used. As we know, this was due, in many cases, to vehicles arriving at their units in plain Dunkelgelb and the crews applying the brown and the green themselves. The colours came in the form of a concentrated paste which could be thinned for spraying (or hand-painting) using gasoline or whatever else came to hand. In these images we see side-panels salvaged from WW2 German trucks, with their original paint intact and in remarkable condition too. On one of the panels (middle and bottom photos) the green and brown have clearly been stippled on with a large brush, creating a patchy effect with rough edges and on the third panel, (top right) the paints have obviously been sprayed, forming a soft-edged finish with more of the Dunkelgelb on show. These relics are invaluable as they not only show the patterns but also the shades of colour, making useful references for modellers. Photos taken at Bruce Crompton’s Axis Tracks facility in the UK.
