EASY PE-EASY SHERMAN! PART 1 TMMI's Editor grafts Hauler's photo-etched detail set for Hobbyboss's 1:48 M4A3E8 onto Tamiya's equivalent, for a more refined appearance

With the lower hull and suspension assembled, the tracks can now be fitted, prior to painting. We can appreciate the compact size of the model here

T

amiya's 1:48 armour models, now quite an extensive range, are delightful creations that are super-speedy to assemble and fun to paint. If you want to take your model that bit further, check out Hauler's photo-etched product line which includes enhancement sets for a range of subjects. I initially chose to build Tamiya's recently released 1:48 M4A3E8 Sherman quickly for a timely review, but I just could not get past the unavoidably thick-moulded headlight brush-guards, such a key element of a Sherman's 'look'. Initially, I tried thinning them down with a scalpel blade and sanding sticks, but with limited success; they still looked to thick and after my efforts, uneven as well. There was no other way - I needed photo-etch! As of yet, no specific set exists for this kit, so I used Hauler's brilliant little set for the Hobbyboss M4A3E8,which pretty much works on this model. The only parts I could not use were the track guard braces, which are significantly longer than the width of Tamiya's guards, and are all but impossible to trim down due to their design. Over the next few pages you can see the set in action, plus a few small additions of my own. For the next issue, I will paint this lovely little model! â—?

Tamiya's Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension suspension bogies are finely detailed but quick and easy to assemble

The drive sprockets incorporate polycaps to secure them to their axles and allow fine positioning when mounting the tracks

The turret is a multi-part sub-assembly and to conceal the cemented joints, a layer of body putty dissolved in cellulose thinners was painted on

The extra-wide HVSS tracks come in ‘link-and-length’ form and are straightforward to fit around the running gear. This was done before painting

It is essential that the roadwheels maintain full contact with the tracks’ inner running surfaces for realism; floating wheels are very unconvincing!

Tiny polyurethane resin bolt-heads from Plus Model were fitted to the spare track links; it’s a small detail but worth adding

The two steps (?) on the transmission cover were made from scrap photo-etched brass and superglued in place

Overall view of the model’s front end. We can see a slight gap between upper and lower hull halves, which will be closed up during final assembly

The key part to replace in any Sherman kit are the headlight brush-guards. The standard, moulded kit parts are too thick for 1:48 and were substituted with Hauler parts for a far more scale-like effect

A new rear stowage rack will be found in Hauler's PE set and it is much more refined than the moulded rack; it is delicate though and needs careful handling

The inverted U-shaped item here is the retainer ring for the bow MG dust cover. The moulded detail was scraped away and replaced with copper wire for a more three-dimensional effect. Tiny discs punched out from lead foil were added to simulate the studs for the cover's fasteners

The rear lights’ brush-guards look simple but are quite tricky to form into shape. Check reference images for their correct appearance

of yet, no specific [photo-etch] set exists “forAs this kit, so I used Hauler’s brilliant little set for the Hobbyboss M4A3E8,which pretty much works on this model...

The delicate periscope guards are a key part of most Shermans' appearance and will be found on Hauler's PE brass fret. Use tweezers to bend to shape

The kit is devoid of the main gun's dust cover mounting strips, so they were added using lead wire and plastic scrap

All hatch handles were trimmed off and replaced with copper wire, for a more realistic look

he latest release in Tamiya's much-adored 1:12 Motorcycle Series takes the form of the 2018 spec Yamaha YZF-R1M, a machine known worldwide for its performance and desirability. The YZF-R1M was created first and foremost as a circuit machine and its design and technology were heavily influenced by data gathered from the YZR-M1 MotoGP bike. It has appeared in the Superbike World Championship and All Japan Road Race Championship, one of its highly notable achievements being an astounding three, back-to-back wins of the Suzuka 8 Hours between 2015 and 2017. Tamiya's new kit features a multi-part recreation of the 200hp, four-cylinder,

liquid-cooled engine and as we have come to expect in this model kit series, it sports exquisite detail across all exterior surfaces. New Bridgestone Battlax RS10 tyres have been made for this kit, with the 'almost slick' tread pattern reproduced to perfection, a key element in the realism of any bike kit. We will bring you a full, step-by-step build on this wonderful new kit as soon as possible! â—? Availability; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. A MACCHI

Juan Anelo presents his latest work, an Italian flying boat, with an interesting technique for seascape bases

I

usually start each project after having inspired by historical photos, documentaries or conversations with friends who love modelling. On this occasion, I imagined an aquatic scene with a seaplane, but done in a different way than I had seen to date. On one hand, I wanted to make the sea completely transparent since that is the main virtue of water and we currently have materials to simulate such transparency. On the other hand, I wanted a dynamic scene, a rough sea with waves at different heights. I had imagined a seaplane in distress, making an emergency landing on this rough sea. It's something that, although unlikely, could happen; who says it might not happen in one of the innumerable war actions? TMMI 276 October 2018

THE BUILDING

I chose a model to make this project from the Czech brand 'Fly' in 1:48. I chose this model simply for aesthetic reasons, I love the lines of this beautiful Italian flying boat. As usual, I started with the interior, improving with scratch-work some details of the cockpit with plastic strip and two-part putty. Once closed up, I also made some improvements to some details of the fuselage, such as the pilot's head rest. The assembly in general did not involve a great of

work and it was very easy and comfortable. As usual, I finish the assembly of a model by paying close attention to the elimination of small defects, thoroughly sanding and polishing, checking that the entire surface is completely smooth.

PAINTING

Although my models tend to be very 'weather-beaten', with plentiful dirt and weathering effects, for this project I wanted to achieve the typical bright, clean finish and of the biplanes

during the First World War. The painting process started with a layer of primer, then a base coat of Tamiya X-2 White (gloss), already applying in this phase some gradients of tone, with some pre-shading. The plane was painted using the Acrylic range from Tamiya. For the weathering of the white portions I used several shades, such as XF-20 Medium Grey, XF-80 Royal Light Grey, XF-53 Neutral Grey and XF-55 Deck Tan. With the shading effects already applied, the

model was masked-up to start the painting work with the red tones. To achieve a greater three-dimensionality and simulate as much as possible the 'scale effect' I used the technique of 'overhead light' (a common technique used in tanks and figure painting) with a gradient of up to five different shades of red, using as a base tone, Tamiya XF-7 Flat Red. When painting the wings, I paid close attention to the general shapes of the wings, applying different

The roundels have been applied and further shading effects are to be airbrushed, to unify the markings with the airframe paint effects

An overall undercoat of Tamiya XF-2 White (gloss) kicked off the painting processes

The upper wing has been given its green base colour, and its ribs then masked in readiness for shading effects

As with the green for the wings, the red areas of the model were not a single, solid colour, instead being made up from at least five shades from dark to light

The subtle shaded effect can be seen here and in the photos of the finished model

highlights to the leading edges and masking to create the typical 'ribbing' of the fabric sections. Up to five different shades of green were employed to achieve the effects of light and shade. The colours used for the basis for the green was XF-26 Deep Green and XF-65 Field Grey. Perhaps the most complex part of the model's assembly was the bringing together of the wings with their uprights and rigging. To making the rigging I used fishing thread 'Uni-Thread 8/0' and turnbuckles from the 'Gaspatch' brand.

THE SEA

Once I had finished the model, I was able to start with the aquatic scene,

designing first the base and the location of the model on it. The first phase in the process of making the sea base was to form a model of the choppy ocean out of clay. Using this malleable material, I was able to create the scene I had in mind, with a very rough conditions and several heights of swell. With the clay still soft and using cling film as a barrier, the fuselage was pressed in so that it would fit later without a problem. Once the clay model was finished, I made a mould with two-part silicone rubber. The mould was very flexible and detached easily from the original sculpt. The mould was then filled with transparent liquid resin,

stained with some drops of Tamiya Acrylics X-23 Clear Blue and X-25 Clear Green. I let it set for twenty-four hours and then removed the transparent casting from its mould, practically without a problem. Although the resin casting went as planned, I made some corrections on the surface of the sea directly by carving the resin, adding some more breakers and further details on the surface of the water, etc. For the foam effect I made several tests, in the end creating them by mixing clear transparent resin for aquatic effects, with the micro-balloons and transparent fibres that are usually used with surface filler. The final result was a very dynamic and original

presentation of this Italian flying boat, in which we can practically feel the butterflies in the pilot’s stomach! ●

FULL-BUILD: FORMULA 1 EBBRO 1:20 LOTUS 49B â—? KIT NO.20005

FEELING A BIT

LACQUERED! Although they share the same type number, the Lotus 49B is quite different and much more muscular than the '49. Eric Evain builds the new 1:20 kit of the 49B from Ebbro and uses Tamiya's superb new Lacquer Paints for the first time

A

t the beginning in 1967, there was the Lotus 49, the first F1 car equipped with a Ford Cosworth V8 and the first F1 with its engine as an integral part of the chassis. Victorious since its introduction in F1, it did not allow Jim Clark to become World Champion but it did bring Lotus back to the front of the stage. Then, the development of the V8 DFV engine made the Lotus 49 grow. To cope with the increased power, the tyres became wider, the front and rear suspension were redesigned and the efficiency of the cooling system

20

improved. Thus, not only was the nose expanded to accommodate a larger radiator but air outlets were also fitted into the nose to optimise the latter's operation. In short, the Lotus 49B had gained muscle. It allowed Graham Hill to become World Champion in 1968 with three victories and won another two GPs in 1969 before giving way to the no less famous Lotus 72C. In 1968, Colin Chapman still faced, like all racing engineers, the problem of transmitting power to the ground and he had the idea to install a wing attached to

the hubs of the rear wheels to give additional downforce. I think I am correct in saying that the first fin of this type appeared on the '49B at the French GP of, July 7th, 1968 in Rouen-Les Essarts (a non-permanent circuit that has since disappeared). At first, the large wings were fixed on tall struts above the rear wheels and bracing cables were needed to hold them in place. But following accidents suffered by the two Lotus drivers at the 1969 Spanish GP after the loss of their 'high-pitched' wings, the federation legislated against them.

TAKE YOUR TIME AND GET IT RIGHT

It could be said that the release of the Lotus 49B Ebbro was delayed. Announced very early by the Japanese manufacturer, the kit stayed on stand-by for many months. This delay is undoubtedly justified by the fact that Ebbro took his time to develop the subject and offer us a kit without any errors. There are so many differences between the 49B and the 49 already kitted that almost everything had to be redrawn. One might think that the chassis are identical but with rear suspensions anchored further forward,

V the whole thing is different. The nose,

the oil reservoir, gearbox, brake discs, suspension... Everything is different and Ebbro created four new sprues to for the B version to keep things accurate. This extreme attention to detail and realism probably explains the long development period of the kit. So we must not complain! At first, I was somewhat disappointed that Ebbro released the 1969 version and not that of the 1968 World Championship car. But observing the excellent photos, often in colour, appearing in the book 'JOE HONDA Racing Pictorial Series: Team Lotus 1968-1971' we can observe that the evolution of version B was really gradual and that the final configuration of the 49B only raced in 1969. Ebbro offered either the 'high-fin' version that participated in the Champion's Race (non-championship) at Brands Hatch in March '69, or the 'low-wing' version of the US GP at Watkins Glen in October '69 won by Jochen Rindt. Not a fan of the high wing, I chose the low version and wanting to pay tribute to the great champion that was Graham Hill, I opted for the car No.1.

ASSEMBLY SUMMARY

Build-up is very similar to that of the '49 and does not present any real problems, but we must be wary of the fragility of some parts, especially very thin suspension rods. To avoid having any force-fits, I slightly opened out each of the suspension bar locations so that they would fit without having to apply pressure. Similarly, the anti-roll bar must also be handled with care. For the painting of this kit, I used the new Tamiya Lacquer Paints. The composition of these paints is similar to that of Tamiya TS sprays, but the interesting thing is that we can avoid decanting the contents of an aerosol to apply it via airbrush. In addition, just the amount needed is used and there's no need for primer either. The surplus can be poured into a jar while for a spraycan the surplus is usually lost, because more paint is extracted and decanted from a can than is actually needed. Obviously, if a large surface is to be painted, a TS spray remains advantageous. I preferred to dilute 25% the Lacquer Paints paints with cellulose (lacquer) thinner for better spraying. The tests conducted for the assembly of this Lotus show that the paint covers very well and dries with a very gloss finish. The pigments are very fine and do not clog the engraved surface detail of the model. The LP range was not fully available when I built the Lotus but no doubt that will soon be the case. The advantage will also be ready-to-use varnish, especially the excellent matt and satin varnishes from the TS range.

The Ebbro instructions recommend the use of 0.4mm Model Factory Hiro cable for making the ignition cables. The author chose instead to use 0.5mm Tamiya cable

To hold the cables in place, a cable-tie was made with fishing line. A 0.3mm hole was drilled just under the engine head and the fishing line then wrapped around the ignition wires

The ignition cables were neatly grouped and would not interfere with the installation of the air intake trumpets

The fuel hoses were made with 0.4mm Model Factory Hiro translucent yellow tubing. Short lengths of 0.3mm copper wire were placed at the outlets of the injectors to facilitate the fixing of the yellow tubes

The four exhaust pipes are separately moulded and fit together very well. Once painted black, the manifolds received a layer of Burnt Metal (Testors Metalizer) to add realism

The gearbox and the delicate suspension elements are well reproduced. Normally the gearbox should be painted aluminium but the author chose gunmetal to accentuate the contrasts Contrary to what one might think, the interior of the cabin was not aluminium, but was dressed with a grey coating reproduced with Tamiya XF-53 Neutral Grey. The dashboard is minimalist and the steering wheel was painted with Citadel Red

An assembly test showed a slight gap between the bonnet and the front bulkhead of the chassis. A little plastic card tab and some sealant remedied this

To paint the body, Tamiya's new Lacquer Paints were used; White LP-2 and Italian Red LP-21. These paints cover well and are very glossy; no need to varnish before applying the decals

Masking has been applied to the bodywork. The only difficulty is to position them in a precisely symmetrical way

The air outlets were painted entirely with Humbrol Satin Black. The black areas are recessed, so the nose was masked off to facilitate the painting

The driver's harness is missing from the box, with just two-dimensional decals provided, so I used Model Factory Hiro harnesses. Vintage photos show blue harnesses without markings. To facilitate assembly, the ends of the fabric straps were solidified with a drop of cyano glue (superglue). Once dry, it allows us to cut the ends without the straps fraying and facilitates their insertion into the photo-etched buckles. I also used metal mesh covers for the intake trumpets (Model Factory Hiro P909). They are the exact diameter of the kit trumpets and I glued them over the kit-supplied translucent parts (G3) so they were perfectly positioned. Let's go back to the finishing of the bodywork: is it better to use the gold-coloured decals from the kit sheet, or to paint those areas with gold? Where the decals overlapped, a slight step was formed, plus a slight colour shift was noticeable, so I opted for a painting session.

THE CHARM OF RETRO

Ebbro has established itself as a benchmark for historical 1:20 F1 models, especially Lotus. This kit has all the qualities of its predecessors already featured in TMMI. Thanks to Ebbro, our legendary F1 collection continues to grow. And when I put this Lotus 49B side-by-side with the 2017 Ferrari SF70H reviewed in a previous issue, I'm not sure that the aesthetic advantage goes to the most recent F1 designs! â—?

Any black overspray on the now polyurethane-varnished surface was easily removed with tissue paper dipped in white spirit

The assembled chassis/ tub attests to the assembly accuracy of the kit. Note also the fineness of the representation of riveting

The brake discs were painted with Humbrol Metal Cote gunmetal. The material was applied via the airbrush and once dry, a cotton swab was rubbed over the discs to give the appearance of polished metal

p 20-24 Lotus 276MN 23

Ebbro does not provide a harness in the kit, so the author used a Model Factory Hiro harness set with 3mm wide straps. The harnesses were attached to the frame using sewing pin heads

The front section is fully detailed. The steering rack is very slightly too short, leading to some toe-in at the front wheels

The windscreen is in two parts. They were glued together with epoxy glue and two wooden spikes (cut-down cocktail sticks) ensured they were correctly aligned during drying

AOSHIMA 1:24 LB WALK R35 GT-R VERSION.2 NO.054031

TAKING A LIBERTY T

he latest incarnation of the Nissan Skyline GT-R (R35) as interpreted by Japanese tuner ‘Liberty Walk’ is this groundscraping beast with lo-vis, rising-sun graphics and outrageously huge wheel arch extensions over vast, 20” rims. The style is from the imagination of Wataru Kato aka ‘Shakotan Koyaji’ and looks pretty amazing, even if it’s not necessarily your ‘thing’. The kit is produced the high standard we have come to expect from Aoshima, with an immaculately moulded basic bodyshell to which are added front and

rear bumpers and those crazy arch parts. Some cutting will be needed to accommodate the custom parts and the areas for trimming are marked in the instructions; a little modelling skill will be needed to execute this neatly but it doesn’t look too difficult. The body parts’ surface detail is excellent, with attachment rivets moulded integrally. The bonnet is moulded separately but no engine is supplied; this can sourced from the aftermarket. The wheels are supplied in two-parts each, over which is slipped the rubberband-like tyres and again, detail is

superb. Left and righthand drive dashboards are offered, plus a pair of racing seats. These appear to have camouflage covers on the box-art, but no decal is provided, so you’ll need to paint this yourself! Another wonderfully bonkers creation of Liberty Walk for your display cabinet! ● AVAILABILITY; Aoshima models and accessories are available from good model shops and online. www.aoshima-bk.co.jp/en www.hiroboy.com

A

fter the invasion of France in May 1940, Germany realised that the Panzer II was no longer a viable fighting tank and new adaptations of the hulls were put into production, beginning with the Marder II tank destroyer. The need for mobile artillery produced the Wespe (wasp) which was equipped with a 10.5cm howitzer. Production began in February 1943 and ran to June 1944. The Wespe first saw action on the Eastern front but some battalions were later sent to Normandy in 1944 for reinforcements; yet more fought in Italy. The Wespe was considered successful vehicle and praised by its crew for its mobility and reliability. By the same token, its armour protection was lacking and the fighting compartment was very crammed, which can be easy to see just looking at the vehicle. I have a special place in my heart for any open-topped WWII German AFV, so it was only a matter of time before I built the Wespe. The camouflage I chose was similar to one captured in Normandy in 1944. This is the later version which has reinforced suspension as well as a few other small

details over earlier Wespes. The kit is the older Tamiya production which still stacks up really nice. In the end though, much of the kit parts were replaced with aftermarket products, keeping just the main hull tub, suspension and road wheels. Various photo-etch details from Voyager, The Show Modelling, Eduard and Aber were used to improve the scale thickness of the parts. Also incorporated were Royal Model's resin interior, Voyager models aluminium barrel, Friulmodel metal tracks and some scratchbuilt parts. Because I had two kits of this vehicle in my stash, I decided to build one of them right out of the box for a comparison to the completely decked-out model with aftermarket galore and a box stock kit look like right next to each other.

Comparison of the right side fighting compartment from the kit (right) and Voyager’s photo-etched wall which had multiple angles to bend and line up correctly

BUILD: DRIVER'S V THE COMPARTMENT

Royal Model's resin interior set was used here, but first, I lined the inside of the hull with some styrene sheet for proper fitment. I also added photo-etch bolt-heads inside the hull sides where the guide rollers are mounted and the floor and walls were textured by applying Mr. Surfacer 500. The seat, transmission and driver's controls were fitted without much difficulty. Wiring was added using various sized lead wires and the interior was then painted using Vallejo acrylics and weathered with various pigments, colour-washes and oil paints before the hull halves had been cemented together.

EXTERIOR

The kit's fenders were cut from the upper hull, as well as the circular inspection plate for transmission. I added a thin styrene ring on the underside of the top hull where the inspection cover would sit and be screwed in. Two small holes were then drilled where the plate was screwed on. After this, hull halves were finally glued together. The photo-etched fenders from Voyager models were soldered together which makes them strong and easier to bend to depict 'damage'. The ammo containers were also made up from the photo-etched set and where possible I soldered them together. Some parts were too small though, so I simply used CA (super-glue) for them. The Voyager Models aluminium gun barrel was assembled and I have to say I was really impressed with its brass muzzle brake. It

30

Photo-etched ammo racks were soldered together

comprises nine parts and actually threads onto the aluminium barrel. With the gun-tube assembled, the mount and shield were next and I had to anneal the photo-etched shield pieces to get them to curve properly. This assembly was very delicate and the curve had to be perfect to fit inside the fighting compartment. With

the entire gun assembly now finished, work began on the photo-etched fighting compartment walls. The walls have to be bent to three different angles, so constant checking of the fit was crucial. I added various resin details such as an MG42, radio and crew gear. Once assembly was finished and a final check of

Still test fitting the gun mount and fighting compartment walls. You can see the author had dented-up some of the storage lids to give the vehicle some 'age'

fit had been made of all the parts, the interior fighting compartment was painted and weathered separately then glued into place. I first painted everything a black/brown colour mixing Tamiya paints. This was my 'chipping' colour. I then sprayed on the chipping coat using AK Interactive's 'Chipping Effects'. Next,

A comparison shot of out-of-the-box kit and aftermarket-added models

V Tamiya Dark Yellow and

Buff were mixed and sprayed for the base coat. Once dry, I 'chipped' this paint using water, stiff brushes and toothpicks. After the chipping was finished, the interior details were brush-painted with Vallejo paints. Dark washes and some work with oils helped 'dirty' things up a bit inside and made it look used.

BACK OUTSIDE

Exterior work was now the priority and the tarp

loops were added to the fighting compartment walls. I scratchbuilt the exhaust using brass sheet and Apoxie Sculpt so that I could realistically dent it up. I used the kit part to check the correct size and shape. Brass tubing was used for the sighting markers stowed on back of the hull too. A tow cable was not included with the kit so I made one from spare tow eyes and braided metal wire. I also made a spare road wheel holder from brass sheet, because

A primer coat has been sprayed on entire model using Tamiya acrylics, thinned with their lacquer thinner

The results of 'chipping' the paint using toothpicks, and stiff brushes

32

this was not included in kit and was usually a field modification on the real vehicle. Friulmodel track links were use for the spares on the front of the hull as well as the main tracks and they went together without a hitch. Once everything was in place I primed the model using Tamiya Fine Primer, spraying it right from the aerosol can. I then added the same chipping base coat to entire exterior using the

same methods as inside the fighting compartment. The base yellow colour was applied then 'chipped', then another layer of chipping fluid was applied to chip the camouflage colours. I used Tamiya paints once again and airbrushed the camo scheme freehand. I was then able to chip the camo to show the base coat of yellow underneath the green and brown camo colours. The balkenkreuze were painted on the walls using masks and Tamiya paints.

The painting of the interior parts had to be done before gluing into place and again Tamiya acrylics were used. AK Interactive chipping fluid was sprayed prior to the dark yellow paint so it could be 'chipped'

The fighting-compartment floor plate, heavily chipped and weathered. The author also added some small pieces of foliage (dried leaves) as this would surely be tracked into a small vehicle like this with four crew members back there

WEATHERING

Weathering began with lower hull and tracks and I soaked the white metal tracks in burnishing fluid. After removing them from the fluid and letting them properly dry, they were weathered further using colour-washes and pigments. For the hull I used Wilder Textured Earth as a base to build up mud and dirt. I added various pigments and real vegetation for the build-up. I added some grease stains around the suspension and wheels using raw umber oil paint and AK Interactive Engine and Oil Stains. Oil paints were also used to create shadows in various areas of the vehicle to give it a nice patina. Dust and light-earth pigments were used to dust things up a bit. I applied oil paints for 'dot filtering' as well on the large fightingcompartment walls. The 'speckling' technique was used to add various light dots over the vehicle to simulate tiny dirt, mud and rust particles, using rust, dust and dark brown colours. It can be difficult to find the right consistency of the medium that will be speckled onto the model. Every time I dip my brush I check how it flicks on paper before applying it to the model. If you get too large of a speck it is easy to wipe from the model with a brush dipped in thinner. I added some foliage line using plant-box liner from my wife’s flower box. This stringy liner is perfect for simulating very fine line, rope, weeds, or vegetation. I tied this to the loops on compartment walls and vent slots on the side of the hull.

Chipping of the camouflage colours using the same techniques as rest of the chipping

After the chipping of base coat, another layer of chipping fluid was sprayed for the camouflage colours. The dark green and brown camouflage are also Tamiya paints thinned with lacquer thinner. The camo was airbrushed freehand

Here the lower hull is receiving built-up earth using various weathering products

V STOWAGE I used various odds and

ends from my spares to add logical stowage to the vehicle. I simulated the blanket/ tarp on the rear wall using thin lead foil. This area is where the crew prepped the ammunition for firing. In the front of vehicle I added a wood plank from balsa that held all the stowage on the front of the hull. I saw this in a lot of pics when doing my research. I also added wicker suitcase and a storage box. All these items were painted in oils. I added spare wire around the headlamp as I saw in one of my reference pics, as well as some ammo cans, ammo, chain, and a few track links. And with that, my Wespe was done! â—?

Rene van der Hart builds AMK's delicious 1:48 Fouga CM.170 Magister and gives it a Luftwaffe camouflage scheme

I

n the late 1940s, French aircraft manufacturer, Fouga, started design work on a new jet-engined trainer aircraft for the French airforce. By the mid 1950s, the Magister entered French service to replace older, prop driven aircraft. The magister is easily recognisable by its distinctive V-shaped tail and very low profile; it is probably the only jet that can be boarded without the use of a ladder. It is also well known for being the aircraft used by the French demonstration team Patrouille de France that used the Magister from 1964 until 1980 when it was replaced by the Alphajet. In 2014 AMK, Avantgarde Model Kits from Macau released a new kit of the Magister. This is only the third kit released by this firm and what a beauty it is. AMK already established quite a name for themselves for producing excellent kits with fine details and exquisite engineering. The only negative I can say about this kit particular is the sometimes hard to remove ejector pin marks on some visible and difficult to reach places. The model I built is in the colours of the German airforce (Luftwaffe). Germany was the largest user of this plane after France, with a total of 265 aircraft of which fifteen were for the Navy (Marineflieger). Most German aircraft were license built in Germany by Heinkel-Messerschmitt. After opening the box you immediately sense the quality of this kit. Every sprue is sealed in its own plastic bag. A plastic container with white metal parts is included as is a complete extra transparent sprue of the fuselage parts to show the internal structure if desired. The white metal parts are also present in plastic so you can choose which ones you want to use. Also a small fret of photo-etched brass is included and two white metal blocks which are glued under the cockpit tub. These are the nose weights for this small tail sitter.

THE COCKPIT V IN As usual the build starts

with the assembly of the cockpit. The cockpit in the kit is sufficiently detailed to build out of the box but for this build I decided to use the Eduard photo-etched brass detail set. This set comes with parts to update several sections of the fuselage and a pre-coloured set for the cockpit with some nice instrument panels and seat belts. The seats are also made from photo-etched brass and have to be folded to make realistic looking seats. The seat backrests have to be used from the kit and filed to the correct shape of the seat. After priming and painting and adding the blue seatbelts, two very nice seats can be produced, which are an improvement over the plastic kit seats. After studying photos of the original aircraft some extra details were added in the cockpit with thin metal wire. Especially the backside of the instrument panels received extra attention because they will be in plain sight. The plastic side panels of the kit with the raised parts were retained instead of the flat photo-etched parts from the Eduard set. When using the clear fuselage it is possible to show the complete internal structure, including the fuel tank, several avionic boxes and both engines.. Because I didn’t know what would be visible after the fuselage was closed, I decided to use all the internal parts included in the kit (which you don’t really need when everything will be closed up) and painted everything inside in the unusual vanilla colour and gave it all a dark colour-wash. Some thin metal wire was used again to add some extra detail. For this build I chose to show the engine on one side only. A few hatches on top were also left open to show some of the internal parts. Both engines are included in the kit and even when just painted they look very good. With a few plastic scratchbuilt parts and thin wire the engine looks even better. With aluminium coloured paper found in cigarette boxes, cut to size and glued with super glue, the insulation on the engine was reproduced. The

38

The cockpit tub carries good detail but the author added some extra cabling from copper wire

Above and left, we can see how effective some wires added to the backs of the instruments can be

One of the engines was treated to some additional detailing, again using copper wire, plus cigarette pack foil

AMK’s model comes with some serious interior structural detail, some of which will be on show if an engine is fitted and displayed

The structural elements were painted in an unusual tan colour before being inserted into the righthand fuselage half

The left side engine has been mounted here, later to be displayed via open access hatches

The painted and weathered cockpit tub has been fitted into the left side fuselage half, minus its seats The kit’s ejector seats were substituted for Eduard photo-etched items, which look supremely realistic once painted

engine was airbrushed with several metal colours from Alclad 2 and weathered with a dark brown wash from Mig Productions. The wings and fuselage received a number rivets along panel lines, made with a riveting tool from Petr Dousek, better known as Rosie the Riveter. Simply roll the small wheel freehand or using a thin ruler over the plastic to create rows of tiny holes. Sand the raised edges of the holes flush and use a sharp piercer to pierce every hole again to create clean even rivets.

With the seats temporarily in place, AMK’s Magister cockpit looks gloriously busy and captures the look of 1950s technology perfectly

UNDERCARRIAGE

As it comes, the moulded-in detail in the main undercarriage bays is very impressive

The author used a ‘Rosie the Riveter’ tool to enhance the airframe’s exterior detail

The wheel bays in the wings are very nicely detailed and the fit, like the rest of this kit, is extremely good. Painting the wheel bays and using a colour-wash is enough to make all the fine details visible. Unfortunately this plane sits very low which makes the inside virtually invisible. The wing halves also fit very nice and hardly any filler is needed on the leading edge of the wings. Aires resin produces two sets of wing flaps in open or closed position. The trailing edges of these flaps are very thin compared to the ones in the kit.

V

The open flaps were used but not extended all the way down. The landing gear can be built from either plastic or white metal parts provided in the kit. I choose to use only the white metal nose gear strut and the plastic parts for all other parts. The Eduard photo-etch set includes all the gear bay doors and some very tiny parts to detail the landing gear. These parts are more to scale than the plastic parts in the kit. The main wheels are made up of separate tyre and wheel hub parts, making masking unnecessary. Only the nose wheel has to be masked before painting. The canopy parts are beautifully clear and fit perfectly. They were masked with Tamiya tape. With a toothpick I traced the edges of the glass, making it easier to cut the tape with a sharp blade. The parts were glued in place with plastic cement and only a tiny bit of filler was needed. No real provision is provided in the kit to attach the canopies to the cockpit frames in open position. With small brass rods, inserted in hand drilled holes, this problem was solved. The closing mechanism could easily be installed after the canopies were attached to the fuselage. All plastic parts were undercoated with Alclad black primer with micro-filler Gunze Aqueous paints were used to paint the interior and camouflage. When airbrushing the camouflage and interior colour over black primer with diluted paint, several shades of colour can be achieved if you don’t spray a solid layer of paint. With some lightened mixtures of the base colour, even more variations in the

40

finish can be achieved. The demarcation line between the colours was masked with Blu-Tack and masking tape. Blu-Tack was used to make a slightly feathered edge between the colours.

FINAL TOUCHES

A dark colour-wash was used to make the panel lines and rivets stand out. A technique more often used by armour modellers, is to use oil paint to 'colourise' the paint, simulating weathering by rain and sunshine. I used this technique with white paint only to simulate some bleaching of the paint. Just place a few tiny dots of oil paint and use a large flat dry brush to blend the oil paint until the desired effect is reached. The Day-Glo orange panels found on several German aircraft usually fade a lot in the sun. This can be replicated by first painting a base of white followed by a light coat of yellow. Some of the white can be left visible through the yellow. Then slowly build up the orange until the desired opacity is reached. The kit decals are nicely printed in register. They are thin and form very nice to the shape of the plastic. The decals reacted well to the decal setting I use; Daco strong. As a final coat I used a semi matt varnish from Alclad to give the overall paint job a light even sheen. This kit was a real joy to build and with the almost perfect fit of the parts this might be one of the best kits I’ve ever built. This small jet will look nice next to my F-104 in the same colours. ● Availability; AMK models are widely available from good model shops and online; www.hannants.co.uk

Situated behind the cockpit, the radio gear sits high and rather visible under the canopy. It was updetailed and carefully painted for this reason

The nose undercarriage leg is very prominent on the Magister, so it’s just as well AMK did a good job of it

Here we see the nose-leg installed in the very tip of the fuselage; note the well detailed bulkhead to which it mounts

The low-slung look of the Magister has been replicated perfectly by AMK. It’s an unusual but attractive aircraft

Tamiya’s paper-based masking tape was used to mask up the canopy in readiness for the camouflage colours

The scissors-links on the kit main UC legs are a little chunky, so they were refined by the addition of the Eduard photo-etched brass replacements

Eduard’s detail set also provides new undercarriage doors, which are a major improvement on the plastic mouldings

The open twin canopies show off the extra detail added in the cockpit by the author

Aires resin flaps and Eduard’s photo-etched set are well worth purchasing for this kit, just to add that vital extra dash of refinement

The Luftwaffe camouflage and markings, with Day-Glo rudders and tip-tanks seem to suit the Magister very well

DEF MODEL, KOREA

Tamiya's recently released 1:35 JGSDF Type 16 MCV vehicle receives a fantastic new set of weighted and up-detailed wheels/tyres and they really are stunning. The kit's standard synthetic rubber tyres are excellent, but this resin set incorporates a bulged and flat-spotted appearance that suggests the bulk of the vehicle pressing down on them. It's important to note that there are two sets of four, subtly varied wheels/ tyres here, each one at a different angle of rotation. This is so the wheels will look natural when fitted to each side and are not simply clones of each other, a very thoughtful touch. Also in the Type 16 set is a cast resin muzzle brake with drilled-out holes (the one criticism of Tamiya's kit) and rifling, individual wheel chocks plus sheets of pre-cut masks for painting the wheels. Brilliant stuff from this energetic Korean producer of high-quality upgrades. Also new from DEF Model is a set of front wheels/ tyres (plus spare) for the Sd.Kfz.251 halftrack, which will give Tamiya's ageing but still excellent kits a realism boost. The Horch 108 staff car (ICM and Tamiya kits) also get an upgrade with new weighted wheels as does Revell's MAN 5t. EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC

www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk Eduard offer many hundreds of detail sets and if you buy several for one project, the costs can mount up. One way of reducing the outlay is with their 'BIG ED' sets which combine the pertinent photo-etched brass and masking sets for a model into one pack, and it's actually cheaper than if the individual sets were purchased individually. One BIG ED set that caught our eye recently is for Tamiya's magnificent 1:32 Vought F4U1D Corsair. It could be argued that this is a kit that doesn't need any aftermarket products, although having featured Eduard's resin cockpit upgrade last issue, there is always a way to cram in more detail! If you prefer to use photo-etched parts instead of resin, the BIG ED pack provides metal parts for the cockpit, such as instrument panel, consoles and more, plus details for the engine, airframe exterior. A set of precoloured seat harnesses is included and finishing off the set is a set of pre-cut canopy masks. Perfect! 1:32 BIG ED F4U-1D DETAIL SET (BIG3383) FOR TAMIYA

REVELL, EUROPE

PATROL TORPEDO BOAT PT-109 www.revell.de SCALE: 1:72 MATERIALS: IM, WS ITEM NO.05147 PT-109 is famous for being the vessel that was crewed by John F Kennedy during his US Navy service in World War Two and Revell’s recently issued kit provides decals to depict that exact boat. The model comes moulded in grey polystyrene that carries some nice detail, and this can be further enhanced by the modeller via the use of Eduard’s recently issued photo-etched set for the kit. In 1:72, the PT boat hull is just the right length (34cm) for convenient display; its 1:35 counterpart from Italeri is enormous! Two vessels can be built from this kit and you must decide before starting, as numerous holes must be drilled in the deck before fixing it in place.

A very decent replica of this famous Patrol Torpedo boat and just the right size Some crew figures would have been the perfect touch. Oh, and it’s in an evil, end-opening box...

ZVEZDA, RUSSIA

T-90MC RUSSIAN MAIN BATTLE TANK www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, WC, WM, WS ITEM NO.3675 This is a new-tool kit for 2018 and it looks it; the box is stuffed with sprues carrying astonishingly well-detailed parts, from the multi-part lower hull to the futuristic-looking turret and its modern spaced armour. The suspension swing-arms are moulded individually which potentially allows for them to be fitted at various levels if installing on even groundwork within a diorama, but to do this you’ll need individual-link tracks. The latter might provide to be the kit’s week-point, as the guidehorns are moulded in strips that cement to the tracks’ links and lengths; precision will be needed here. Otherwise, this appears to be a highly detailed, flawlessly moulded kit of a sinister-looking modern Russian MBT.

Fantastic detail, great subject choice Tracks look challenging, individual links might work better

FINE MOLDS, JAPAN

IJN RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT C5M2 ‘BABS’ www.tigerhobbies.co.uk SCALE 1:48 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.FB24 We first saw this new-tool release back in May at the Shizuoka Hobby Show and it looked marvellous; now the model is in our hands we can confirm, it is indeed a lovely little thing. In fact, not so little. In 1:48, the C5M2 has a 25cm wingspan and a deep cord, giving it some table-top presence. As always with Fine Molds, the detail is exquisite but restrained, to the extent that you might wish to run your Rosie the Riveter tool over the airframe to impart this 1930s reconnaissance aircraft/ light attack bomber with the appropriate rivety appearance. The two-man interior is superbly well appointed, building into a cylindrical module that is elegantly sandwiched between the fuselage halves, something FM is extremely good at.

ITALERI, ITALY

MAN TGX XXL D38 www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.3916 Italeri introduced their ‘modular’ truck chassis a number of years ago and it still makes sense. The parts that are liable to be glued on wonkily or knocked off the finished chassis – mudguards, fuel tanks – are moulded in with the chassis rails, creating a very robust basic structure. Different colours can be applied relatively easily via masking and spraying. The MAN TGX XXL D38 is the latest to feature this design approach and in its French Blue livery with flaming (or steelcoloured) lion artwork, it looks dramatic indeed. No engine is supplied, but it’s no deal breaker, the detail of the cabin (inside and out) plus chassis and drivetrain is more than enough.

Wonderful detail everywhere and the rationalised chassis design helps the modeller greatly Fabulously charismatic subject, brilliant cockpit, full engine detail No rivets, but these are (arguably) barely visible in 1:48

The parts to be chrome are best painted (Mission Models Chrome) rather than use the supplied sticker, which could peel off over time TMMI 276 October 2018

THUNDER MODEL, CHINA

BRITISH SCAMMELL PIONEER SV/2S RECOVERY TRACTOR www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WC, WS ITEM NO.35201 If you want to see just how far model kit production has come over the last few decades, take a look at this extraordinary production from Thunder Models. Not only does it depict a hugely yearned-for subject, but the level of detail (via hundreds of parts) is simply staggering. Nothing has been left out here, the kit coming with a full depiction of the vast, 8.4 litre straight-six diesel engine, complete chassis with leaf-spring suspension, encased final drive and winch gear. On the underpinnings, the modeller only needs to add the brake cables for completion. The rear deck builds up from wood-textured panels with not an ejector-pin mark to be seen, a blessed relief. A truly fantastic kit that will any modeller busy for weeks, if not months.

AFV CLUB, TAIWAN

IDF M109A2 DOHER SELF-PROPELLED 155MM HOWITZER www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, SVT, WC, WS ITEM NO.AF35293 Arguably the ultimate expression of the M109 self-propelled howitzer, the Israeli Defence Force upgraded their M109A2 ‘Rochevs’ (Rider) to US Army M109A6 spec to create the potent ‘Doher’ (Galloper) vehicle we see in 1:35 form here. As ever, AFV Club treat us to box jammed with parts – some extremely delicate – to create this highly detailed model. The suspension arms are moulded with torsion bars in place, so theoretically they could remain workable after fitting, handy for dioramas. The exterior is absolutely swarming with tiny parts which imbue the model with a level of sharp detail rarely achieved with moulded-in fittings, but it does mean slower assembly times. The tracks are excellent; they are one-piece items but some of the best we’ve seen.

An amazing level of detail and a superb subject choice

A great subject for a kit, packed with complexity and detail

Non-weighted tyres, but the old cross-ply tyres didn’t squash down much anyway, so not a big deal

Lots of tiny parts are not to everyone’s taste, but it does offer well defined detail

STAR WARS IMPERIAL STAR DESTROYER BUILD AND PLAY www.revell.de SCALE: 1:4000 MATERIALS: IM ITEM NO.06749 You might remember Zvezda’s staggering large-scale (comparatively) 1:2700 kit of the Imperial Star Destroyer from a couple of years ago. It was fantastic, but not cheap and possibly too big for many modellers’ display areas. This new kit offers a slightly more practical solution, with a 40cm hull and a much lower pricepoint. And, it comes with a lighting and sound module that recreates the glowing main engines and chaotic battlesounds from the Star Wars universe. The moulded detail is very respectable and lifts this model from what might be perceived as a toy-like kit to a finely engineered scale replica. It’s easy to assemble too; the only thing missing are some 1:4000 X-Wing fighters!

Impressive levels of detail and a very good price. And it makes noises! No display stand included, but it does have fold-out ‘flaps’ that work as ‘feet’

TAKOM, CHINA

M3A1 LEE CDL www.pocketbond.co.uk www.tigerhobbies.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.2115 The ‘CDL’ of this tank’s name means ‘Canal Defence Light’, an Allied plot to conceal its real purpose which was to dazzle enemy troops during night-fighting using its thirteenmillion candle-power carbon arc lamp. The standard turret was replaced with a special design with a vertical slit for the lamp to shine though. Takom have used their superb M3A1 Lee kit as the basis for this oddball British idea, with a new sprue for the lamp-turret. The detail is outstanding here, with a beautifully moulded ‘cast’ hull for this ‘A1 variant and the best Lee suspension out there. Tracks are link-and-length with angled endconnectors on the sprocket and idler links for the most realistic appearance. The four markingsoptions are all overall olive drab of course.

A tank with looks that only its mother could love, but a fascinatingly odd machine, kitted with great finesse by Takom Tracks must be fitted in the right sequence for accuracy TMMI 276 October 2018

M60A1 W/EXPLOSIVE REACTIVE ARMOUR www.pocketbond.co.uk www.tigerhobbies.co.uk SCALE 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, WS ITEM NO.2115 The United States Marine Corps M60A1 did sterling service during the 1991 ‘Operation Desert Storm’ Gulf War but from photographic evidence, it appears to have played second fiddle to the arguably more ‘glamorous’ M1 Abrams MBT. Takom have identified that the USMC M60A1 is a fantastic subject for a model kit (as did Tamiya some years back) and have released an all-new kit of it in 1:35. During this period, these machines were fitted with ERA (explosive reactive armour) panels as a defence against the ubiquitous RPGs used by enemy forces and it gives the tank a more modern, angular appearance that belies its vintage. From our in-box inspection, Takom’s model looks excellent, with punchy detail all without an overwhelming parts-count.

The USMCs’ muscular M60A1 is a great subject choice and always looks great in model form; top detail everywhere with this kit Not a gripe here; the one-piece tracks are beautifully done and are perfect for this subject

RIDERS IN THE SKY 1944, LIBERATOR GR.MK.III/V IN RAF COASTAL COMMAND SERVICE www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, PE, PCM, WS ITEM NO.2121 Eduard have put Hasegawa’s brilliant 2007 kit of the Consolidated B-24D Liberator to good use here, revising it to Royal Air Force Coastal Command spec, adding to the box some new decals, photo-etched details and a very comprehensive masking set for this aircraft’s extensive fenestration. The new instruction booklet is provided, showing where to add the new detail parts and which components are pertinent to each of the thirteen markings-options offered. As always, Eduard’s literature and extras are impeccably produced and give new life to this already superb model in the form of the under-represented but oh-so important RAF Coastal Command. Eduard also make a host of hop-ups for this kit, available separately.

Great to see an RAF Costal Command subject given the Eduard treatment; the kit even includes a 76+ page reference book Very little to criticise here, Eduard have gone to great lengths to get this subject right

AOSHIMA, JAPAN

SUZUKI HUSTLER SNAP KIT www.aoshima-bk.co.jp/en SCALE 1:32 MATERIALS; IM, SAS ITEM NO.054154 Having talked previously about staggering detail and huge parts-counts, we sometimes forget that we need youngsters to join our wonderful hobby and kits with millions of microscopic bits will send them off, reeling. Therefore, we must be appreciative that Aoshima and others are creating some accessible but not dumbeddown models for younger folks or simply for people who fancy building something but don’t want to commit to a large, expensive kit. ‘The Snap Kit’ of the Suzuki Hustler might just catch their eye. It’s a funky Japanese mini-car whose interior is almost like plastic origami, the door panels and dashboard folding up to meet the central floor, which also incorporates the seats. It’s fun, quick but nicely detailed. What’s not to love?

A great introduction to modelling that is simple to build but remains a properly detail model Nothing to criticise here; anything that ignites a spark of creativity in a young modeller’s mind is positive

FULL-BUILD: FORMULA 1 TAMIYA 1:20 LEYTON HOUSE CG901B ● KIT NO.20028

ADRIAN

Rene van der Hart doesn't only build aircraft, he's pretty nifty with cars too; here is his build of a much-loved Tamiya classic F1 car kit, the 1991 Leyton House CG901B The kit provides the bodyparts moulded in that distinctive colour, but most people will wish to paint their model with Tamiya’s TS-41 Coral Blue or with Zero Paints ‘Aquamarine Blue’ (ZP-1125) from; www.hiroboy.com

With the main body structures built up and filled, a layer of grey primer was applied to check for flaws and to provide an undercoat for the colours to follow

, AN S EARLIEST T

he striking Leyton House CG901B from 1990 was an evolution of the March CG891 contender from the previous year which is famous for being the first Formula 1 car designed by Adrian Newey. Tamiya's 1:20 kit of this car was released in 1991 and sports a fully detailed engine and suspension, rubber tyres and a nice decal sheet. I never used an aerosol for painting scale models before but for this model I decided to use Tamiya's TS-41 spray can. The build starts with assembling the two main body parts. The fit of most parts is nearly perfect except for the small hatch on the nose cone. This hatch is just too small and the gaps needed to be filled with strips of plastic and filler. I sanded all smooth and cut off the moulded-on bases for the two radio antennae. These were later replaced with small brass tubes. After sanding the whole surface smooth with Micro-Mesh sanding cloth, I airbrushed grey primer followed by another round of sanding. I was a bit weary using an aerosol on a model but I was truly impressed by the quality of Tamiya's paint. The paint immediately gives a smooth and glossy finish without the need

U

The main body parts and engine/ gearbox await the next stage of assembly. Even though the model is twenty-seven years old, the detail still holds up

The green parts of the livery were masked off and airbrushed using Mr Hobby lacquer paints, for a neater finish than decals

V for polishing. I decided not

to use the white and green decals on the engine cowling and tip of the nose-cone but masked them off and airbrushed it with Mr Hobby paints. The thin black lines between the white and green parts were masked and painted too. Even though the decals were nearly thirty years old, they went on without any problem at all. After the decals had set for at least twenty-four hours I airbrushed on a few thin layers of Pledge Floorcare polish (Future, or Johnson's Klear). The engine detail is impressive, even without adding any extra details it looks very good. The whole engine assembly was painted with Alclad 2 black primer and the metal parts with Alclad Aluminium. The small details were brush-painted with Vallejo paints. The exhaust pipes were airbrushed with Alclad 2 Chrome and Pale Burnt Metal and the heat discolouration was achieved

The engine is impressively detailed, even without additional parts. Note the blue suspension springs

The engine sub-assembly was painted with Alclad 2 Black Primer and the metallic parts finished with Alclad 2 Aluminium. The smaller details were hand-painted with Vallejo acrylics

With the still-good, thirty-year old decals in place, the Leyton House CG901B really starts to look good

Mini Review... BARRACUDACAST 1:48 ‘HAWKER SEA FURY COMPLETE COCKPIT (BR48347) www.barracudecals.com

56

Airfix’s 1:48 Hawker Sea Fury is on release and is a great kit, but as we know, models can always be taken further. This new set by BarracudaCast from California provides a whole new cockpit, cast in resin and the detail is staggeringly fine. You’ll need a razor saw, fresh modelling knife blades and some cyanoacrylate glue to prepare and assemble the set but it will be well worth the effort.

using Tamiya Weathering Set D. I added several resin hose fittings, braided wire, spark plug cables and hoses according to photos of the real car found on the internet. All suspension parts, baseplate, wheels and wings were painted with Alclad 2 Black Primer. This was the colour I was looking for and only added a semi gloss coat afterwards. The tyres were sanded with coarse sandpaper to give it realistic appearance. Installing the mirrors and two thin brass wires for the radio antennas finished off this build. This kit, and probably most of the other Tamiya Formula 1 kits, is simply wonderful and, especially with Tamiya's legendary fit quality, a joy to build. ● Availability; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. UK import and distribution by The Hobby Company Limited; www.hobbyco.net

Nearing completion; the airbox is in place and the suspension has been installed

The tyres were sanded with coarse sandpaper to give them a realistic, slightly worn look

The author added resin hose fittings, braided wire and spark plug cables according to reference images of the real car

To create a scale-like gloss finish, the decals were sealed in with a layer of Pledge Floorcare polish (Future, or Johnson’s Klear), avoiding a ‘wet-look’ two-part varnish

Tamiya’s 1:20 Leyton House CG901B is a much loved kit. The real car is arguably a much more elegant-looking machine than the current crop of Formula 1 monstrosities

KIT PREVIEW AMATI 1:32 CIWL ORIENT EXPRESS OF 1929 - SLEEPING CAR NO.3533 LX ● KIT NO.1714/01

The box is big and contains masses of parts in wood, brass and other materials

James Hatch inspects Amati's extraordinary new kit of a sleeping car from the Orient Express, in 1:32

WEST TO EAST IN STYLE!

O

ne of Amati’s most-anticipated recent releases has been their Orient Express Sleeping Car of 1929, first announced earlier this year. After a good number of months of teasing us with videos and images of the kit, it was finally released at the beginning of July of this year. This is a very significant release as can be seen from the size of the kit and the box into which it needed to be packed. Amati’s grand new kit takes a specific 1929-built carriage (#3533) and converts it into a comprehensive multimedia experience. The core of this kit is based around a series of precise laser-cut plywood parts which are then embellished and partially sheathed in photo-etched brass and nickel-silver. A whole series of hardware is included for the chassis, bogies and the period internal cabin features, including radiators, tissue dispensers, towel rails, wall mirrors, bottles and holders, soap racks, coat hooks, cabin lights, ventilation panels etc. All of these parts are specific to this release and aren’t generic. More cast and turned parts are included for the bogies etc. Each cabin has a small washroom with doors that are hinged to open, and the cabin doors can be posed in any position too. Interior

58

wood panelling is provided as high-quality prints which are to be cut out and fitted to the ply interior walls, and then embellished with wooden strip framing. Of the twenty-one (!) sheets of photo-etch that is included, an entirely PE carriage roof will be built, and this can be lifted off to reveal your workmanship within. Also supplied in this kit is a profiled MDF track base with sleepers, rails and fittings, pre-cut acetate window sheet, decorative self-adhesive trim, 6 sheets of plans, and two full-colour perfect-bound instruction manuals with everything in photo-format with English and Italian text. A serious commitment to quality that is demonstrated in kit execution and price-point. I doubt this is a kit that you’ll be able to sneak in under the radar with the box size, but the finished model measures 73cm x 13cm x 8.5cm, so won’t be too onerous in display space, in fact, the completed model would be perfect for a shelf. If you’re in the market for an unusual and reasonably long-term project, give this new Amati release some consideration. To purchase Amati kits, please check your favourite Amati stockist or online hobby store. Our thanks to Amati for sending this out for review. ● RRP €890 amatimodel.com

Book Reviews GOT A NEW BOOK? IF YOU ARE A PUBLISHER WITH A NEW MODELLING RELATED TITLE TO PUBLICISE, WHY NOT SEND IN A COPY FOR REVIEW HERE?

PANTHER TANK IN ACTION

DAVID DOYLE, SQUADRON SIGNAL PUBLICATIONS www.adhbooks.com The WW2 German Panther tank is all the range right now, with new kits springing up all around and modellers opening their wallets in response. What better then, to have a book that covers all major versions and offers some insight into the vehicle, plus some useful imagery that shows the tanks’ physical properties, camouflage schemes and zimmerit patterns? This new, 80+ page soft-covered production from Squadron Signal does just that, with generous quantities of wartime photographs, colour profiles and drawings showing the tank in action. The nine-page section towards the back of the book on Bergepanthers is particularly useful for those building Takom’s excellent new kits of this recovery variant.

CH-47 CHINOOK IN ACTION

DAVID DOYLE, SQUADRON SIGNAL PUBLICATIONS www.adhbooks.com The Chinook is not only an iconic helicopter design, but also a highly ‘model-genic’ one; several kits exist in the main scales and it looks spectacular on the table. So, what better than a book that provides a heap of photos showing it from development to deployment? The CH-47’s most famous service was during the Vietnam War where flew into the danger zone to drop off supplied and troops and this era is well represented here, although given the hundreds of colour photos from the conflict in circulation, it might be a good idea to dedicate a whole book to just the Chinook’s activities in South East Asia. The book brings us up to modern times and there are some inspirational images here.

F-14 TOMCAT IN ACTION

DAVID DOYLE, SQUADRON SIGNAL PUBLICATIONS www.adhbooks.com With Tamiya’s new 1:48 F-14A and F-14D kits now out, this new softback volume is well timed. As is usual, the author traces the type’s development from inception to retirement, the Tomcat’s being a rather sad and ignominious end at the hands of the junkyard demolition machine. Before these pages though, we are treated to some splendid photographs of this magnificent machine in its full colours and markings.

Airbrush Thinner Our Ultimate Airbrush Thinner is specifically formulated to work with ALL brands of acrylic modellers paint. Our blended formula of six ingredients ensures a fast drying, smooth finish every time, no matter what brand of modelling acrylic paint you use.

Airbrush Cleaner Our fast & effective Ultimate Airbrush Cleaner is specifically formulated to work with ALL brands of acrylic modellers paint and all types of airbrush. Our cleaner is not overly aggressive and will not ruin the seals in your airbrush. We have also added a blue dye to the cleaner to be able to distinguish it from our thinner. Photo-Etch Placer Our photo-etch placer is a re-usable wax based positioning stick that will help you to hold and place even the smallest piece of photo-etch or styrene. A real helping hand when dealing with the more fiddly side of modelling.

Primer Our Ultimate Primer is a water based acrylic polyurethane self levelling surface primer. Offering a simple and easy application with excellent adhesion and durability, it dries to a hard flat finish and is simple and easy to clean up. It’s also fine to sand. There are seven colours to choose from: Grey, black, white, gloss black, olive, oxide and gelb. Ultimate Primer can be applied with a brush, airbrush and sponge for use on styrene, plastics, resin, metals, woods and various other substrates.

Weathering Wash Ultimate Weathering Wash has been formulated with several key non-toxic ingredients to bring you a superior clay based wash to add detail and realism to your model. The nine vibrant colours in our range cover the most widely used in modelling. Be aware, the wash will dry slightly lighter than the colour of the bottle and a good shake and stir is recommended before use.

Modellers Sanders Our range of specially produced Ultimate Modellers Sanders provide an excellent abrasive solution for the discerning modeller. Uniquely shaped they are provided in several grits (100/180/220/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit). They are long lasting and washable, which will allow them to be used to their maximum potential with the minimum of waste. Thinny Sticks Our range of Thinny Stick Sanders have been developed specifically to help modellers get to those hard to sand areas on all genres of models. They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series NEW How to Build... TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A and F4U-1D CORSAIR When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic model kits. Each model since then has seen incremental improvements. Just when you think the series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves you wrong. Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every respect. Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included several new sprues and offered a wider range of camouflage and marking possibilities. Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit includes a significant number of brand new sprues to depict the unique attributes of this variant. We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown and accuracy. In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty of inspiration with two different configurations and colour schemes. We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s 1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk around of a Corsair under restoration.

Flying close air support after D-Day was a hazardous job

THUNDERBOLT DOWN IN NORMANDY

ollowing on from last issue’s P-47 Thunderbolt article, I thought I’d include this dramatic and well known photograph taken in late June 1944 during the Battle of Normandy. As they moved inland from the D-Day landing beaches, the Allies constructed Advanced Landing Grounds; rough airstrips built in fields for the British and

American ground-attack aircraft to re-fuel and re-arm. The turn-around was extremely fast, dangerously so in some cases. This photo shows P-47 ‘O7-U’ of the US 14th Fighter Squadron of the 406th Fighter Group. It must have crashed on take-off rather than on landing because the fragmentation bombs are still hung under the wing; rarely if ever would an

aircraft return with these munitions un-dropped, unless a malfunction had occurred. A terrifying scene indeed and one that might lend itself to a diorama, perhaps? ●

Tamiya 18 Well Palette For Brush Painting (87195) www.hobbyco.net If, like me, you seem to be forever looking for pieces of non-absorbent material (old credit cards, CD ROMs that failed to ‘burn’..) on/in which to mix small quantities of paint, filler, glue or colour-washes, you will appreciate this new product from Tamiya. It consists of a vacuum-formed sheet of clear plastic, with eighteen recessed hemispheres (not quite hemispherical, but nearly) in which small mixes of paints etc., can be made. They can be washed out afterwards or just discarded, making them extremely convenient. Five sheets are in each pack and at less than a fiver for a set, they are not too expensive.

FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH

ITALERI 1/24 RANGE ROVER POLICE

A

The Range Rover Classic can be considered a milestone in the history of off-road vehicles. It was produced in numerous variants and versions from 1970 to 1996. Range Rovers were favoured by British traffic police due to their estate car-type rear hatch, allowing storage of all the necessary equipment needed for on the road. •

Italeri’s 1:24 Police Range Rover comes with markings for British Greater Manchester Police, British Transport Police and Dutch Police (Rijkspolitie) from the late 1970s early ‘80s era.

The model features a highly detailed bodyshell exactly captures classic shape of original. It is straightforward to build and comes with two styles of police light-bar for the roof.

Flexible vinyl tyres with Range Rover tread pattern are provided and you’ll find a full ladder chassis in the box. The front wheels can be positioned in a left or right steered position.

The cabin interior is well detailed, with alternative dashboard parts for left or righthand drive options. On the exterior, alternative windscreen wiper parts are provided for left or righthand drive options. The kit includes a open or closed tailgate option.

The kit captures the imposing lines of the original vehicle and is an important model for fans of police vehicles and British motoring in general.

Great size, 24 cm scale model.
