50 YEARS AND STIL

NUREMBERG TO

Tamiya

Marcus Nicholls spent five days at the Nuremberg Toy Fair this year, to celebrate Mr Tamiya's fiftieth year at the event. Here's the extended report

M

r Shunsaku Tamiya's first attendance at the Nuremberg Toy Fair was 1967, when I was just six months old. It was the height of the Vietnam War, the Doors had just released their debut album and England manager Alf Ramsey was given a Knighthood for the previous year's World Cup win. Yep, it was that long ago. For the model kit world, Mr S Tamiya's attendance was a significant event, because the company's presence was starting to be felt in Europe, with the creation of a whole

The big Honda kit will be complemented with superdetailed chain set made up from individually moulded links

new concept of model kit; highly detailed and accurate scale reproductions of racing cars and military vehicles. The Honda RA273 Formula 1 car was the first of the 1:12 Big Scale Series and even today, it builds into a fantastic-looking model. Half a century later, Mr Tamiya has reached the magnificent age of eighty-two and he is still going very strong. He is keenly involved in the choice of new subjects to be released and is very much the figurehead of the company. He is also a very warm-hearted and friendly gentleman and I am proud to know him on a personal level. This year's show held quite a big surprise in the form of the all-new 1:6 Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin, a truly spectacularlooking (and huge) model that will join the ranks of the other bikes in this range, in my opinion, some of Tamiya's finest scale model achievements. The kit comes with ingeniously designed wheels with individual discs for the spokes that

overlay each other to create a convincing result. A Detail-Up set will be released for the kit that replaces the standard chain with a working set that builds up link-by-link and the result will be an almost perfect replica of the real thing. Tamiya's all-new 1:35 Valentine Mk.II/IV was on show of course and you can see more of this superb model on page 48 of this issue. The kit comes with link-and-length tracks, plus newly sculpted crew figures and offers three markings options. Also on show in the military display cabinet was Tamiya's revised Matilda Mk.III/IV in 1:35, which will now come with new tracks, side-skirts, frontal armour, crew figures and decals to depict the Lend-Lease version supplied to the Red Army during WW2. Tamiya also showed the new 1:48 Sturmtiger which looks appealingly chunky in this scale and will go perfectly with other vehicles and accessories in the 1:48 range. As well as the new

releases, Tamiya always show off the highlights of the re-issue schedule and this year we have the 1:12 Yamaha YZR500 GP, Suzuki GSX750 Police Bike and 1:24 Mitsubishi Montero, welcome returns to the catalogue. Of course, Tamiya weren't the only model manufacturer there! Most of the major kit companies were present, although Dragon and Meng were not there, which was a shame as it's always good to see the new and recently released items 'in the plastic'. Depending on their size, the square footage of model company display booths varies hugely, but the smaller stands often hold some of the most appealing new items, so I make sure I visit all areas of the appropriate exhibition halls in order not to miss out on the juicy new stuff. Plus Model's stand is very compact but they usually have at least two new vehicle kits on show and this year we had the marvellous 1:35 US Road Roller (Hyster), a military version of a

civilian machine and also the 'Generator Zugwagen', an extraordinary WW1 electrical generator vehicle that was also used in WW2. Italeri revealed their amazing new 1:32 F-35A Lightning II. The kit is all new and the display pics and prototype model show it in a rather interesting pale green pre-paint finish. The fantastic new 1:24 Mercedes Actros truck and 1:48 H-21 Shawnee helicopter were also on show, both very cool subjects. Airfix showed off a prototype of their new 1:48 Supermarine Walrus as well as the impressive new 1:48 Ju87B-1 which looked very nicely detailed indeed. Many more kits were on show of course and over the next few pages you can see the ones that caught our eye. â—? Please note, many of the models seen here are 3D printed prototypes, or are assembled from test-shot sprues and are thus subject to change before final production. TMMI 258 April 2017

T

he 'Ugly Duckling' was the nickname for the P-47M flown by Maj. George E Bostwick of the 63rd Fighter Squadron. It is curious that apparently, the name was never painted on the aircraft. Maj. Bostwick was credited with destroying eight enemy aircraft in aerial combat, plus two damaged and six destroyed on the ground. On researching many possible P-47 aircraft to model, I eventually came back to the kit provided markings of UN-Z. I liked the blue/grey scheme on this aircraft, especially combined with the red and black cowling and bright blue rudder; I thought it would make for an interesting weathering project. The Tamiya P-47 needs no introduction. It is an outstanding kit, with perfect fit of parts and superb detail throughout. The model was built virtually straight out of the box, with the exception of the added rivets, (courtesy of a 0.75mm Rosie the Riveter), a set of Ultracast resin wheels, and an Ultracast resin seat. Construction was a breeze, a good thing as the building stage is not something I like. I'm much happier when it comes to the painting and weathering stages. The first coat of paint to go on was a lightly airbrushed

coat of Mr.Surfacer 1500, thinned with Gunze Levelling Thinner. After a few days of hardening, I sprayed on two to three light coats of Alclad II Gloss Black base in readiness for the metal coat. This was applied with Alclad II Airframe Aluminium, over the entire airframe. At this point, I worked up the weathering on the underside of the model with my limited pallet of oils. My preference for oil paints are the superb Old Holland range. I only have a few select colours; Black, Burnt Umber and White, enough to produce any shade of grime.

STENCILLED MARKINGS

About mid-way through the underside weathering, I applied the US insignia using a mask provided by Montex. While finalising the bare metal weathering, I applied a small amount of oil 'mapping' to the painted insignia. The entire underside then received a couple of light coats of Humbrol Clear (acrylic) to seal it all. To start the paintwork on the upper surfaces, I first applied a thinly misted coat of hairspray to the model. This would allow me to produce the small scratches and worn areas seen on the finished piece. Over the hairspray, I applied the

camouflage colours, using Tamiya acrylics, mixed as per the kit instructions. Whenever I use hairspray as a substrate to the finished colours, I always mix Tamiya acrylics with water 50/50. This allows for a controlled removal of the top colour. To produce the patchy, scratched and worn areas, I first moistened the paint with water (a small area at a time), then using an old stiff brush, and occasionally a toothpick – frayed on the end – I worked up the scratched, worn areas to my liking. This first round of chipping results in a very stark look, with the silver chips overpowering the top colour. To remedy this, I normally lightly overspray the model with the base colours again, toning down the chips. Finally, I re-moisten with water, the areas receiving the most wear (wing roots etc.) and start the chipping process again. This second round of chipping is used very sparingly. At this point, I applied the upper airframe insignia's, again using the Montex masks. The fuselage letters were applied using the kit decals. All other markings were applied using the kit decals. Once the markings and decals were on, I applied two thin coats of Humbrol Clear, to ready the model

for weathering. As on the underside, the upper surfaces first received a pin wash using my preferred method - Tamiya enamels thinned with X-20 thinner. I normally use quite a thick mix here - 50/50 paint and thinner. I apply the wash very sparingly to the panel lines and rivets only. After about an hour drying time, I remove the wash (wiping from front to rear) using the excellent Mr Hobby Clean Stick 2, dipped in X-20. After the enamel pin washes, I then finish the weathering using lightly thinned oil paints, simply applying the oils along panel lines and as filters, blending as I go with a dry soft brush. Finally a coat of Vallejo Satin Varnish was very lightly misted over the model, to unify the different gloss levels on the model, as a result of the weathering process. Final assembly then took place with the application of the prop, canopy and ordinance and landing gear. ● Availability; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. ne of the better-looking fighters of World War II, the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (Swallow) was initially developed under the guidance of a German engineer and was powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 601A in-line piston engine. The Hien reached units in the Pacific from 1942 and served until Japan collapsed in 1945. Americans in the Pacific often filed reports stating they had come up against Japanese pilots flying the Messerschmitt Bf109 fighter. In fact, Japan never flew the Bf109 operationally. The fighter in question was the Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien fighter, codenamed 'Tony' by the Allies. The Hien was a superb fighter of Japanese design and powered by a Japanese built Daimler Benz engine as fitted to the Messerschmitt. A clean, streamlined fast and manoeuvrable aircraft, the Ki-61 was the only liquid-cooled fighter to enter service with the Japanese air arms during World War II. The Hien scored many aerial victories against the Allies and it also pioneered the use of armour and self-sealing fuel tanks that had been so useful in Europe. Ironically the engine that made the 'Tony' possible was also its biggest limitation. The licence built Daimler DB 601A powerplant had little potential for further development. An attempt was made to improve the Ki-61 as the Ki-61-II, with an Ha-140 engine but teething problems delayed its introduction. Thus, although the 'Tony' had an important role in the war, it never achieved the fame of the A6M 'Zero'.

NEW KIT V TAMIYA'S It was about twenty years

ago when I first saw an advertisement, on the back cover of a model magazine, of a new 1:48 scale Wildcat. It meant that Tamiya was back to releasing new scale aircraft models. First in a new generation, their Wildcat was all we can ever dream: fine detail, accuracy, fit, an easy build. Since that moment, every new Tamiya kit has been something special. Tamiya 1:48 airplane kits are far from being always perfect, but any Tamiya aircraft kit in this scale always holds some kind of surprise for the modeller. This new Ki-61 makes no exception. This is a totally new mould, which was not surprising, given that Tamiya had never released a Ki-61 before. In all these years, Tamiya did not change much in their way of packaging a kit, and I love it. From the box art to the side profiles, Tamiya has given us a unique style, a unique feeling, unmatched by any other model company. When I finally opened this box, I knew that I was going to hold in my hands a top notch kit, what I did not know was that this new Ki-61 comes with a full clear semi-fuselage; Tamiya has provided the option to show the interior of this kit. Such a possibility is very interesting, but not for this build. Looking at the kit parts, we have a quite full engine, a detailed cockpit, and some more internal parts. The cockpit does not need improvements. The engine maybe needs a wire or two, just on the top of it. The detail is excellent where it matters, where you can see it. The only thing this cockpit deserves is a careful painting. The floor, the seat, the dashboard and the side consoles are a multi part affair and they are detailed as much is possible given today technology. In addition, the instrument dials and the seat belts are supplied as decals. Although a decal is far from being the best choice for the seat belts, is always good to have the option.

32

Only two colours were used to represent the main paintwork. First an overall coat of XF-10 Flat Brown, Then, a layer of XF-59 Desert Yellow in very thin coats

The seat cushion and the headrest look good after a layer of XF-64 Red Brown mixed with XF-1 Matt Black but they come to life after a thin burnt umber oil paint colour-wash

The burnt umber oil paint colour-wash was also applied to the rest of the cockpit parts to deepen the detail and to create a well used look

Levers and knobs were touched in by hand with bright red paint

The instrument panel dials were cut out and applied individually for the most convincing look

Aside from seat harnesses, Tamiya provide all you need for a busy-looking cockpit

STARTING FROM THE INSIDE

As usual with aeroplane kits, assembly starts in the cockpit. Building this kit according to the instructions is an almost twenty stage process. The cockpit fitted with no problems and the same was true for the engine; no trimming was required. The only real addition I made to the cockpit was to add some seat straps which came from a pre-painted Eduard set, found amongst my spares. I used only two colours to represent the interior. First I applied an overall coat of XF-10 Flat Brown. Then, all the cockpit parts – and they are many – were painted XF-59 Desert Yellow in very thin coats, to create some highlights and depth.

Guns, engine and all instrument panels were painted XF-1 Flat Black with clocks and switches picked out in white, red and yellow. The seat cushion and the headrest look very nice after a mix of XF-64 Red Brown and some XF-1 Matt Black, but they really come to life, like the rest of the cockpit, after a very thin Burnt Umber oil colour-wash. When dry, the cockpit received a very gentle drybrush with some Humbrol Matt Aluminium (56). Finally, cutting the dashboard dials one by one from the decal sheet and dropping some Future on top of each was a very time consuming exercise, but it was well worth the effort. Tamiya has sorted the

moulds out so that the interior components fit positively and without any problem. With the engine and the cockpit complete, it was time to join both sections of the fuselages together. This is fairly easily done and, unsurprisingly, no filler was required, just a little Tamiya Extra Thin Liquid Cement. The wings themselves are a fairly simple affair. In addition, the wing assembly fits very neatly to the fuselage, with no gap and shows the correct dihedral. Also the fit of the ailerons is perfect. I was particularly impressed the engineering of the oil radiator air intake, which is complex, but perfect fitting. Another interesting aspect of this kit is the unusual way

in which Tamiya moulded the engine exhaust. The possibility to fit the engine exhaust after joining the fuselages halves together helps a lot, makes the painting process easier. As usual for me, the undercarriage bays were painted XF-59 Desert Yellow before applying the camouflage. So, it was necessary to mask them off. The undercarriage are a little gems, with same high level of detail as the engine and the cockpit. The landing gear doors, and each leg, were painted as per the instructions, the brake pipes were the only improvement. The tyres were first painted with XF-1 Matt Black and later oversprayed with light shades of grey.

U

The kit comes with a reasonable representation of the DB601A engine, and as we can see here, the author paint it up to show it off. This will be subsequently covered over with the upper cowling moulding. The lightning holes in the cockpit look very convincing here

Underside view of the horizontal stabilisers, showing their tight fit to the fuselage Overall fit was close to perfect, with no filler needed anywhere

TO THE PAINTING V ONWARDS Given that in building the

major airframe components no filling and sanding was required, after a wash to remove all the residuals of the moulding process and the grease from my fingers, this kit was ready for painting. I divided the painting process into four stages. The first was to spray the airframe with very dark base, to show up any imperfections and to work as a base for the following metallic paint. My choice was to use a Gunze Gloss Black H-2, barely thinned. The second stage was to spray the entire model with Alclad II White Aluminium ALC-106. After few hours, when the paint was dry, I spread all over the airframe some burnt umber oil paint. The burnt umber was used without any thinner, so as

not to affect the Alclad's metallic finish. After cleaning the oil colour with a soft cloth, the third stage was to spray, at a very low air pressure, and freehand, the green spots on top of the wings and over the fuselage sides using some heavily thinned XF-13 JA Green. The fourth stage was painting all the detail, like the black antiglare panel over the engine hood, the red tail and the yellow wing leading edges. Both spinner and propeller were painted as per the instructions, but first they were given the same aluminium base of the rest of the airframe. To add some weathering here and there, and over the engine hood and the propeller, I very carefully used some 1200 sanding paper soaked in water.

U

The propeller assembly was initially sprayed with XF-64 Red Brown

A chipped metal effect was then applied to the blades

Over a coat of gloss black, Alclad II White Aluminium was airbrushed over the whole airframe, forming a solid coat of pigment

After the Alclad had fully dried, burnt umber oil paint was dabbed over the airframe. The burnt umber was applied without any thinner so as not to damage the Alclad’s metallic finish. The excess was wiped off, leaving the brown colour in the panel lines, also staining the surfaces to create a pleasing patina

Alclad II paints come ready-thinned for the airbrush; they can not be brush painted

The author chose to spray the red hinomaru emblems using a circular mask. Decals for these are, of course, supplied in the kit The painted markings look very neat, with no decal carrier film in sight!

The Hien looks very neat in its overall silver scheme, with markings in place. But more paint is to follow, in the form of the mottled green pattern

Here we can track the author’s progress as he applies the green splotches over the wings and fuselage. It’s essential to keep checking reference photos during this procedure

The kit decal was used on the eye-catching red tail

Tamiya provide a sheet of paper-based masking material for the canopy. Each pane of the canopy glazing is clearly marked up, with arrows to help orientate the cut-out masks

Further applications of the burnt umber oil paint ‘wash’ help to blend in the yellow panels and green camouflage patches

The blue side-flash has now been applied, as well as the yellow leading-edge panels

Close-up view of the upper cowling area; the engine, although not fully detailed, looks realistic

All the modeller must do is trim each masking panel from the sheet; they are not pre-cut as they are in Tamiya’s car kits

The undercarriage bays were painted XF-59 Desert Yellow, then masked off

The propeller has now been mounted and the subtle chipping effect works well next to the similarly weathered fuselage

The only extras added to the undercarriage were brake lines

V CANOPY AND DECALS

The transparent parts are crystal clear, well detailed and with no fitting issues. The real issue is to be very careful in cutting the printed masks for windshield and canopy. Decals are usual Tamiya standard. Slow work and plenty of setting solution are required. Another round of colour-washes accentuated the detail in this area.

FINAL THOUGHTS?

Wrapping all this up, I have to say that building this new 1:48 Tamiya Ki-61 has been a very strange experience. Never before, in my long modelling career has building a kit been so easy and so fulfilling. At the same time, never before has writing an article for a modelling magazine been so difficult. Going back reading the notes I wrote down during the build, I notice that there was little I could say different from what is already in the instructions, given the high level of detail and superb fitting! â—?

The box contents of just two sprues plus bodyshell, windows and decals; this is a quick build

T

he Komatsu Light Armoured Vehicle was developed in the late 1990s in response to a Japan Ground Self Defence Force (JGSDF) need for a replacement for its ageing unarmoured Toyota and Mitsubishi utility trucks. Powered by a 160hp liquid-cooled diesel engine, the LAV is available with a variety of armament options including the M249 light machine gun, the M2 .50cal heavy machine gun, the Type 01 LMAT anti-tank missile as well as the Kawasaki Type 87 anti-tank missile. The vehicle can be air lifted by both the CH-47J and the C-130H and first saw use outside of Japan in 2005 during a humanitarian aid mission in Iraq. As of 2015, nearly 2,000 vehicles have been produced by Komatsu at its Ishikawa, Japan, facility.

THE KIT

Joining the ever expanding line of 1:48 kits, the Tamiya JGSDF Light Armoured Vehicle follows their 2004 release of the same vehicle in 1:35 scale. The kit consists of eighty-three parts in olive drab styrene, a transparent sprue with nine parts, and a small decal sheet with markings

for three different vehicles. Unlike its bigger brother which includes a die-cast metal chassis tub, the 1:48 version features a traditional styrene chassis tub as well as uniquely designed styrene wheels very similar to their recent 1:32 Mosquito offering. Overall moulding and engineering is typical of recent Tamiya releases – fantastic! Some of the smaller parts such as the grab handles and the optional roof rack and particularly well executed for this scale. A rudimentary interior is included despite not being able to see much through the clear styrene windows. A very nicely moulded driver figure is also included complete with clear styrene goggles. The kit includes options to model three different vehicles; one with smoke dischargers, one with the roof rack and M249 LMG, and a third with just the M249. The machine gunner’s hatch may be posed in the open position but the other four doors and rear hatch are all moulded closed. The parts breakdown lends itself to a quick build which is just what I needed while in the middle of some lengthy projects! So, without further delay, let’s get started!

CONSTRUCTION

Construction begins with the lower hull and suspension in Steps 1 and 2. Since there isn’t much to see the suspension is divided into front and rear sub-assemblies that consist of just five parts for the front and two or the rear. Each sub-assembly includes very well executed springs that are moulded integrally to the struts – perfect for this scale and a marvel of modern moulding technology. Next up are the wheels and tyres in Steps 3 and 4 and this is where Tamiya’s engineering really set them apart from the rest. Each wheel is made up of a two-part hub to which four interlocking, directional tread sections are cemented. You will need to pay attention to the sequence outlined in the instructions but the hubs are moulded with keys that make it pretty much impossible to get the tread sections in the wrong position. Once complete there are no nasty seam lines to remove and most importantly (for me, anyway), no gimmicky rubber tyres to add. The unique tread pattern of the tyres is precisely rendered and they definitely capture the look of the real thing.

V Can we please have more of

these Mr. Tamiya? The interior is assembled next in Steps 5 and 6. As I mentioned earlier it’s pretty basic but perfect for what can be viewed through the windows. Honestly there really isn’t much to assemble in these steps; it’s more of a painting exercise. The four seats and seat pedestals were first airbrushed with Tamiya XF-85 Rubber Black. The pedestals were then masked off and the centre console and dashboard were airbrushed with Tamiya XF-74 JGSDF Olive Drab. Once dry, the seats and dashboard were cemented to the chassis tub. Although very nicely moulded for this scale, I skipped the painting and installation of the driver to expedite the build. In Step 7 you’ll need to decide which version you’re building and drill the appropriate holes for mounting the various equipment on the exterior of the cab. I chose option 'B' for the vehicle with the roof rack and drilled the necessary holes with a pin vice. Steps 8 and 9 move to the exterior of the cab and include the mounting of the armoured glass window frames, engine louvres, and the windows. Prior to cementing the frames in place I airbrushed the areas around the windows with Tamiya XF-73 JGSDF Dark Green to make things a little easier when the time came to airbrush the rest of the exterior; in the end this wasn’t really necessary. The clear styrene window parts were airbrushed while still on the sprue with Tamiya X-23 Clear Blue mixed with X-22 Clear and thinned with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. I opted not to install these in Step 9 and would wait until most of the weathering was completed to lessen the chance of ruining them! Steps 10, 11, and 12 cover the assembly of the rear panel and the roof machine gun turret. The rear panel has some details added including the towing pintle, license plate, armoured window frame, and crew steps before the whole assembly is cemented to the upper body. The join at the roof line needs a little bit of attention to ensure it fits flush with the roof but once

40

Front and rear suspension units build into detailed sub-assemblies

The units then cement directly to the ‘chassis’ moulding

The wheel/tyre design was influenced by those of Tamiya’s 1:32 Mosquito, featuring segments of tread pattern that cement to the inner ‘tyre’. This way, maximum detail is reproduced and there’s no central moulding seam either

The only disadvantage with the wheels/tyres is the lack of weighted flat-spots

The seats are seen here, midway through being sprayed with Tamiya XF-85 Rubber Black, a very useful colour

To add certain external fittings, holes must be drilled in the roof, following guides on the inner surface of the cabin shell

In place, we can see the slightly off-black shade of the XF-85, a more realistic tone for the scale than pure matt black

April 2017 TMMI 258

23/02/2017 16:39

The cabin shell is a simple drop-fit onto the completed chassis

On the roof top we can see the guard rails fitted into the pre-drilled holes

again Tamiya’s engineering makes this a great fit. The machine gun turret hatches can be posed open or closed position and the turrets assembly features the familiar slot and key arrangement to allow it to rotate or be removed. Final assembly includes the mounting of the upper body to the lower body and the fixing of the finishing touches to include the mirrors, the antennae, stowage rack, and the 5.56mm machine gun. You’ll need to refer to the option chosen during earlier steps to make sure the appropriate equipment is installed. The fit of the upper and lower body was

so good that I chose to hold off on cementing them together until most of the weathering was complete. The mirrors were also left off until final assembly to avoid knocking them off during the weathering process. And, well, that’s it! It only took me a couple of evenings to get things put together and ready for painting.

PAINTING

Prior to painting I always like to prime my models with Mr Hobby Mr. Surfacer 1200 from the aerosol can. This gives the subsequent painting and weathering steps a nice key while pointing out any potential surface flaws. Once dry, I

airbrushed the general areas of the brown camouflage with Tamiya XF-72 JGSDF Brown with a little X-22 Clear added and thinned with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. The X-22 Clear is added for a semi-gloss finish which makes things a little easier for the application of decals and subsequent weathering steps. The brown areas were then masked off with a combination of blue tack material and Tamiya masking tape. The green areas were then airbrushed with Tamiya XF-73 JGSDF Dark Green again thinned with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner and some X-22 Clear added for good measure. If I had to

do it all over again I would probably would have just used masking tape for the camouflage as I needed to do a fair amount of touch up to make the pattern presentable. Once dry the upper hull was given several light coats of Future to unify the finish and gloss things up a bit more. After drying for 24 hours, the kit decals were applied and with the aid of a little Micro Sol they settled in nicely. After a final light coat of Future to seal the decals, various details such as the shovel and door handles were then painted with Vallejo acrylics. The tires were airbrushed with Tamiya

WEATHERING

To start the weathering process the model was given a detail wash or 'pin wash' using AK Interactive’s AK-075 Wash for NATO vehicles. This is where the glossy finish pays off; the wash flows very nicely into all of the nooks and crannies without much assistance adding some additional depth to the finish. Any excess wash was removed with a broad brush dampened with mineral spirits. Once the wash was dry, the model was airbrushed with several light coats of AK Interactive Ultra Matte Varnish. Since I use primarily enamel products for subsequent weathering steps the acrylic flat coat protects the pin wash (also enamel based) underneath from being inadvertently removed. The next step in the process is something I like to call 'edging'; kind of like chipping but in a more controlled and subtle way. I use a mix of brown and black Humbrol enamels and a fine brush to chip the edges of surfaces and raised areas to simulate worn areas of paint. Because this is a modern vehicle and is typically not very worn and torn in photos, less is definitely more when it comes to this process. Any excess paint or mistakes can easily be fixed with a brush dampened with Humbrol thinner. Once this was complete I applied several shades of Mig Productions pigments to the lower hull and suspension followed by Mig Pigment Fixer to hold them in place. I then used a new product (to me, anyway) from AMMO by Mig called Medium Density Mud Splashes to dirty up the lower hull and wheel wells even more. This enamel-based solution is basically a mix of pigments, a binder, and fine sand and is particularly useful because it is pretty much the same colour dry as it is when its applied from the bottle. I used a lighter

shade (A.MIG 1751 Dry Steppe) than the previous application of pigments to add some depth and variety. It was applied with both a brush directly to the model and by spraying an airbrush over a paint brush loaded with the product to simulate splashes of mud. I did, however, find the texture of the sand was maybe a bit too large for this scale when it came to applying splashes. The wheels and tyres also received a liberal application applied by brush with the excess wiped off to reveal the treads. Areas of the lower body were then blended with a brush thinned with mineral spirits. Some selective washes of Humbrol enamels were also applied to the roof and bonnet to simulate dust and grime and tie the weathering together. Some darker enamel colours

were also selectively (and sparingly!) applied over the mud to provide some tonal variations. With weathering complete it was time to add the final details to finish the model. The rear-view mirrors were first airbrushed with Tamiya X18 Semi-Gloss Black and

then Bare Metal Foil was applied to the mirrored areas. The roof mounted MG was then painted with Vallejo acrylics and buffed using a graphite pencil and artist’s blending stick. Finally, an antenna from .010 styrene rod was added and painted black. Pigments were applied to the body sides, then streaked downwards to suggest rain marks

CONCLUSION

This is the first model from the Tamiya’s 1:48 armour range I have completed and will definitely not be the last! The overall detail, engineering, and fit is nothing less than excellent and they are to be commended for continuing to expand the line with new subjects. I’ll admit to not knowing a whole lot about this vehicle before building the kit and sometimes that makes for a more relaxing build. As I mentioned previously that’s just what I needed! ●

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC

www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk www.hannants.co.uk Eduard don't produce many new sets for armour subjects these days, but when they do, they are quite spectacular. Zvezda's superb T-14 Armata is the recipient of two sets, one for the intricate bar-armour around the hull-rear plus other sheet-steel fittings, the other for the side skirts. These thin brass parts will impart a feeling of scale to this already excellent kit. Also new in PE is a set of track guards (fenders) for Italeri's M4A3E8 kit in 1:35 and sets of flags in 1:350 for US modern battleships and Royal Navy White Ensigns for 1:350 WW2 subjects. www.paragrafix.biz Three new photo-etched brass superdetail sets have arrived from Paragrafix and they are for some cool subjects. Last issue we featured MPC's incredible 22” Eagle Transporter and now we have the photo-etched upgrade set for it. This includes access gangway doors with their distinctive segmented pattern (standard sized and enlarged; the instructions explain), much improved 'scissor-links' for the landing gear that have a more accurate open structure, cockpit windows, cabin air vents, cockpit clamps and other fittings. Clear plastic sheet is also included for the cockpit windows. For Bandai's exquisite 1:144 Millennium Falcon kit, we have a fantastic rear wall and door/frame for the cockpit, up-detailed liners for the gun turrets, engine baffle screens for the rear deck, loading ramp details and 'trays' for the tops of the landing legs. All will add an extra touch of depth to this already stunning kit. Finally, we have a very useful set for the Bandai, Revell or Fine Molds X-Wing comprising side consoles and instrument panels for the cockpit, a replacement for the cargo hold hatch and mostly interestingly, an engine access ladder/platform and a cockpit ladder, all made up from delicate brass. These will make the perfect accessory to an X-Wing in Rebel repair bay. Fantastic PE sets as always! KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:35 BRITISH INFANTRY TANK MK.III VALENTINE MK.II/IV ● KIT NO.35352

BE MY VALENTINE? Do we really need another 1:35 Valentine tank? After a close inspection of the sprues from Tamiya’s impressive new release, TMMI’s Editor thinks we do

T

amiya’s next new 1:35 tank kit takes the form of the WW2 British Valentine Mk.II/IV, a distinctivelooking machine that served with the British in the north African desert and also with the Soviets through the Lend-Lease scheme. It’s important to note that the kit is all-new and not a licensed release from MiniArt or AFV Club. Tamiya have included link-and-length tracks for this kit and they look superb. The upper runs (visible on the skirts-off Soviet machines) are moulded with a very subtle weighted ‘sag’, with separate links provided for the idlers and drivesprockets. The correct positioning of the tracks is vital and to help with this, the central return roller has a small peg moulded into it, onto which the upper run locates, so the track rests in the correct position. The four suspension bogies feature individually moulded inner springs and the multi-diameter roadwheels are beautifully reproduced with the pressed steel patterns and a full set of bolt-heads. The hull is broken down into individual panels to allow them to be moulded with maximum detail and for the same reason, the engine deck comes with

separately-formed cooling ‘ribs’ (see photo left). Three marking schemes are provided; one British vehicle No.3 (T.47242) from an unknown unit in the North African desert 1941/2 plus two Soviet Lend-Lease machines. For the former option, the side skirts are fitted and the tank is painted in overall desert sand (TS-46 Light Sand). The markings are represented by waterslide decals, as are, interestingly, the leading edges of the front track guards, presumably for a neat and accurate result. The two Soviet machines are in overall dark green (two parts XF-62 Olive Drab to one part XF-59 Desert Yellow) and come with turret markings for two unidentified Red Army units. For these, the side skirts are left off, giving the model quite a different look. Please note, the kit reviewed here is a test-shot and is thus subject to change before final production. ● MN

EBBRO, JAPAN

TEAM LOTUS TYPE 91 1982 BRITISH GP www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:20 MATERIALS; IM, CP, SVT, WS KIT NUMBER; EMSF-1 NO.12 The Lotus 91 was the 1982-season machine and another evolution of Colin Chapman’s visionary lightweight car F1 design. It was also the second only carbonfibre composite car to race in a Grand Prix, another milestone achievement for the English team. Usefully, the 1982 British GP car (Elio de Angelis finished fourth from seventh on the grid, Nigel Mansell retired after twenty-nine laps) did not sport the tobacco sponsors’ names, so it is a good candidate for a model kit. No doubt the logos can be bought separately from aftermarket suppliers to depict the car at other GPs that year, using correct references. Ebbro’s 1:20 F1 cars are gorgeous creations, made with all the care and attention to detail as Tamiya models, even with extra touches of sophistication. The full DFV V8 engine is provided here and even though the material must be purchased elsewhere, a guide on how to wire-up the distributor is shown, classy. Another iconic F1 Lotus joins the ever-expanding line-up. MN

AOSHIMA, JAPAN www.hiroboy.com PAGANI HUAYRA SCALE; 1:24 • MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS • ITEM NO;3920 Aoshima are justifiably very proud of this kit and so they should be because it’s a triumph of model kit design. Actually, it’s a Pagani, not a triumph, but you know what I mean. The Huayra is an absolute beast of a hypercar with a complicated chassis, suspension and body design plus a massive engine/gearbox unit, not to mention the gullwing doors. All of these things are a challenge to reproduce in miniature form and still have it all fit together (the proof of this latter factor, will, of course be in the building) but from looking at the kit parts and having seen Sascha Müller’s built up example on Aoshima’s stand at the recent Nuremberg Toy Fair, I can confidently assert that it assembles extremely well. This model is fully detailed inside and out and very little has been omitted, so plenty of instruction-reading and planning will be required, but it’s a superb kit and a great project for hypercar modellers. MN

Wonderful subject, great detail, good instructions, fabulous boxart 1982 British GP had no tobacco logos; convenient for manufacture, but the model would have more presence with them in place if depicting a different ‘82 GP

REVELL, EUROPE

MIG-29S FULCRUM www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO;03936 Revell have made good use of their partnership with Zvezda in the release of this kit, because the original is a fine kit indeed. The kit comes with just the one markings option of the ‘Russian Falcons’ display team colours, which isn’t to everyone’s taste, but it is quite striking. Some reasonably tricky masking will be required to get a neat result on the light blue areas, but at least the white/ blue/red leading-edge flashes of the Russian Federation are provided on the decal sheet. The moulded detail is exceedingly fine and scale-like, with just enough engraved depth to hold a subtle colourwash. The cockpit is adequate and the ejector seat rather good; with the supplied pilot it will look great through the closed or open canopy. The weapons sprue is included in the kit because it also carries other structural parts, but obviously not used on this airshow crowd-pleaser! MN

A very refined kit indeed, only created within the last couple of years. Excellent detail throughout Some masking expertise will be an advantage

MESSERSCHMITT BF110G-4 www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:72 ITEM NO.7094 Eduard’s 1:72 Bf110G-4 depicts the nightfighter version and therefore, as you might imagine, one of the major challenges of this build will be getting the array for the FuG220 Lichtenstein radar accurately lined up on the nose of the aircraft. Eduard have had this thought too and have included a rather neat assembly jig in photo-etched brass for the task; it just needs folding into shape. The array supports are then lightly taped to the jig and the whole thing offered up to the model. A delicate touch will be needed but it’s a good solution to this critical area. The rest of the kit is a delight, with extensive cockpit interior (including Schräge Musik cannons) a finely detailed airframe and in this ProfiPACK edition, additional photo-etched parts plus the all-important canopy masking sheet. MN

FULL-BUILD: ROAD CAR REVELL 1:24 MCLAREN 570S ● KIT NO.07051

MAC ATTACK! Sascha Müller builds Revell's new 1:24 McLaren 570S model kit and gives it a stunning orange paint scheme using Zero Paints

W

hen I read the announcement that Revell would release a kit of the McLaren 570S I felt very happy and so I started the build of this model initially after release to present it to you in a timely manner. The kit is in Revell’s Skill Level '3' and has 106 parts featuring a nice detailed engine bay and interior. As shown on the box, the gull-wing doors can be presented in the opened or closed position. As a special gimmick, the car can be built in RHD and LHD option (all necessary parts included) and there are also some carbon-fibre decals included on the good quality decal sheet.

54

BODYWORK

Having built so many cars over the last few years, I decided to start with the body first, which is an alternative order to the kit's instruction manual. The McLaren body is made of nine parts and eight of them have to be painted (photo 1). First I started glueing the front bumper to the body. When I checked the result I noticed a slight shift. Also the slit between the bumper and the bonnet part was slight uneven (photo 2), so that I sanded down the plastic body and corrected the slit with the 'Trumpeter Engraver' tool (photo 3). No further issues were found the bodywork

so I moved quickly to the application of Tamiya White Primer in two coats. Between the coats I sanded them lightly with '3M P3000 4) Trizact disc (photo 4). Overall, the appearance of the body is really good. Revell did a very good job especially on the unusual doors on which the upper slot is opened to give a most realistic touch (photo 5).

PAINTWORK

For colour I chose the typical McLaren Orange from 'Zero Paints' (www.hiroboy.com). In the past, I took this bright yellow/ orange colour also for painting my MP4-12C GT3 (photo 6). Zero Paints are ready for use and can be

applied by airbrush without any the need for additional thinning. After three thin layers of paint, the 570S appeared took on a brilliant orange shine which was very bright due to the white primer underneath. After a good (enough?) drying time I decided to apply the carbon decals before clear-coat application to give them a nice glossy appearance, plus some protection. There are some carbon decals included in the kit, but not for all areas in which the original car is showing its carbon. Overall, Revell’s decal quality is very good (photo 7). So I used the carbon fibre decals from 'Scale Production' to have the same structure

Carbonizing the rear is a real challenge

in every section of the car. These decals are very good to handle and I already used them for several years on most of my cars. Underneath all decals (Revell and Scale Production) I applied some Mr. Hobby decal setter to avoid any issues for detaching or bubbling (photo 8). If you want to avoid the application of large areas of decal, you can also mask the body and paint the related areas in black (which is much easier).

To apply the large carbon decal on rear, decal softener and hairdryer were used

CARBONISING

Applying carbon-fibre effect decals on the body’s rear is a really big challenge. I cut up pieces of the decals and applied some decal setter on the surface. After putting the decal on the body I use a Q-tip to move it into correct position and get first adhesion (photo 9). Then I used a hairdryer to heat up the decals. Due to the temperature increase, the decal gets soft and more flexible, so that it is

Alternative method for making the shut-lines appear black. Thinly cut 3M foil was applied and sealed with 2K clear-coat

much easier to bend and apply on curves and edges. This method works quite well. Some more work with the Q-tip gives a smooth surface (photo 10). In very tricky areas, the use of a decal-softener is very helpful (e.g. Mr. Hobby). I use this method I also for the roof decal application. It looks easy but the curved shape of the roof makes the work even harder than expected. As you can see in the picture, there are some

folds and wrinkles which can be removed with softener and by heating up with the hairdryer.

SHUT-LINE ENHANCEMENT

Honestly this job is not my favourite, but it is definitely necessary on a scale model. My friend Dirk recommended the use of very thin, self cut 3M foil in matt black. I used this option several times now and I am very satisfied with the result. I cut the foil with TMMI 258 April 2017

Easy method; a small set of scales for weighing the two-components together in the correct ratio

Engine base was painted with Tamiya ‘Silver Leaf’ from aerosol can and received some colour-washes

The colour-wash gives a more realistic touch

16

Underneath the Alclad chrome paint the exhaust surface has to be painted glossy black

18

Nice fact: Kit has parts included for LHD and RHD version

V a cutter and a steel ruler in

0.15-0.2mm size. They fitted very well into the shut-lines and give the original touch to the model (photo 11).

CLEAR-COAT APPLICATION

I gave the body a quick clean with water and detergent to avoid wetting issues caused by fingerprints. After drying, the car was ready for a clear coat application. A few months ago I changed the clear coat from modelling stuff to car refinish paint by 'Standox'. This material is 2K so that it is much more reliable and is activated with a hardener on an accurate set of scales to get the right activation ratio. I applied this 2K clear with an airbrush spray gun with 0.5mm nozzle size and a suction feed glass bottle (photo 12). After applying a very thin coat, I give the parts a two-minute

Improved handling: parts to be painted were glued on top of toothpicks

intermediate flash off before finishing it with another full coat. The outcome is a very glossy and shiny result which needs an air drying overnight.

CHASSIS AND ENGINE

The engine is well detailed, containing several parts. I painted the lower part with Tamiya TS30 Silver Leaf from aerosol can. After drying I gave a slight colour-washing to the engine to enhance the edges (photo 13/14). The exhaust should be chrome silver, which needs some Tamiya primer and some gloss Tamiya Black TS-14 (photo 15) before overcoating with Alclad II Chrome. The film of Alclad has to be extremely thin to give the best possible shine/ reflection, which is the main characteristic for a Chrome finish (photo 16). Some think Alclad II gold in some

Orange stripes have been masked before painting black. There are also decals included in the kit

painting again! I glued all parts on toothpicks – using superglue – for better handling (photo 19). After primer application I sprayed the orange colour of the body on all parts (photo 20). I masked the stripes on the seats before overcoating with black Tamiya TS-6 paint. After a good dry, I removed the stripes and the orange appeared. The

places gives an even better appearance (applied with a brush) (photo 17).

INTERIOR

The original interior is in a two-tone colour scheme. There are dashboard parts for LHD and RHD are included (photo 18) and the body colour is present on the dashboard, door panels and seats. So I had to start 21

The orange stripes on the seats were masked off and overcoated with Tamiya TS-6

Remove the masking tape after a good drying session. If there are any imperfect areas, you can correct them with a small brush and Revell Aqua paint

Dash was painted by brush to avoid any masking work

Revell kit has thin stripes as decals included which can also be used, but for me the painting method is easier (photos 21/22) to apply the black surfaces on the dashboard I used Revell Aqua color 'Tar' black. I used a fine brush to apply it, so I could avoid masking up the dash. Finally, I applied one coat of Mr. Hobby flat clear on all interior parts to create the final, flat leather surface (photos 23/24).

After overcoating with MrHobby Top-Coat matt the final result looks quite nice

Appearance of the finished ground plate including interior, engine and axles

BUILDING THE CHASSIS PLATE The flat black ground plate is equipped with the assembled front and rear axle sub-assemblies. Also the engine and the interior was glued into place and it was a very good fit (photos 25/26). After a good drying period, I test fitted the car body to the top of the chassis which was not that easy and took some effort because of a wide tab to be clicked into the ground plate. To avoid any damage, I halted this plan and decided to do this job just once during the final assembly. Overall, this kind of tab gives a strong fit in the final assembly which I really like.

TRANSPARENT PARTS

To let the transparent parts appear thinner than they are, I used a black permanent marker on the ends and edges (photos 27/28). The brand I use is Edding which has no interaction with the superglue that I use for building my models. Some of you might ask themselves why I do not use white glue. The fact that my model cars are out on the road for travelling several times a year so I prefer to have the best possible adhesion, which is super glue. My experience with white glue created some issues by falling apart. The Edding permanent marker is also used for the window frames which gives some more depth and more realistic appearance (photo 29).

U

27

Perfect fit, the side tabs do hold the body in place very well

8

2

To let the transparent parts appear thinner than they are it is helpful to plate the edges with Edding permanent marker

9

Same procedure for the window frames-hand striping with permanent marker. Start applying from the inside of the body

Carbon-fibre application To apply the roof decal on the McLaren body needs some 'know-how' to get a good fit on the curved surface...

For my models, I use decal setter and decal softener from 'Gunze'

Use a Q-tip to press on the decals from inside to outside

Apply the ‘setter’ on top of the painted roof (with the included brush)

If there are still folds, use the decal softener

Use a hairdryer for heating up the decals to make them more soft and elastic

Finally, wipe of the surface with a damp and soft cloth

About the author Sascha Müller was born in 1972 and is married. He is a master craftsman in a foundry. His hobbies include gardening, motorsports and, of course, modelling. After a long break, he returned to plastic modelling in 2004. His interests lie in prototypes, GT vehicles of the Le Mans series and occasionally also classic cars. Often, one can also see his models in exhibitions.

58

Revell have significantly upped their game with this release; the wheels have better proportions and the fit of parts is of a good standard

FINAL ASSEMBLY

As described, the doors and the bonnet are moulded as separate parts which can be represented in opened or closed positions. The doors have a long tab which will be inserted into the body. This is easy and works well. My only remark on this construction is that there are no hinges present, so that no movement is possible (photo 30). So you have to decide which option to build (open or closed), or create some hinges from scratch. But honestly, do you really need hinges on it? If you decide to make the closed version, the tab is cut off and the doors are glued into the body. The bonnet has no real fitting, it is just removable if not glued in place. There was one more challenge, which was the carbon decal on top of the transparent engine cover. Application was carried out as described in the 'carbonizing' section previously. It is not possible to cover any transparent parts with 2K clear (which causes cracking), so I choose Mr Hobby topcoat clear gloss is my choice for this.

SUMMARY

Revell has made good progress in improving their quality. The McLaren 570S is a nice kit for a reasonable price and it has lots of detail. The parts do have a good fit (if they are very

slightly reworked). There is one minor detail which I disliked; the side lamps are provided as decals instead of a transparent plastic part. Overall though, a really good kit which was a really enjoyable build. â—?

Book Reviews GOT A NEW BOOK? IF YOU ARE A PUBLISHER WITH A NEW MODELLING RELATED TITLE TO PUBLICISE, WHY NOT SEND IN A COPY FOR REVIEW HERE?

DRAGON WAGON PT.2, A VISUAL HISTORY OF THE US ARMY’S HEAVY TANK TRANSPORTER 1955-1975

M123, M123C, M123A1C, M123E2, M746 DAVID DOYLE, AMPERSAND PUBLISHING GROUP www.casematepublishing.co.uk If you have Tank Workshop’s 1:35 kit of the mighty M123AC1 tractor unit and needs some further references for your build – wiring, colours, markings etc – then this new photo-reference title from David Doyle will prove to be completely invaluable. Within the 120+ softbacked pages we are treated to some real heavy-haulage eyecandy in the form of factory photos (engines, gearboxes, firewall wiring, chassis, winch and other heavy hardware) to contemporary imagery from depots in Germany in the late 1950s and early ‘60s showing the trucks moving AFVs around and there are plenty of colour images here as well as the high quality black and white photos. Of great interest to many modellers will be the colour photos from Vietnam showing the vast rigs ‘in-country’, plastered in the characteristic orange dust. A fan of military heavy trucks and trailers will love this book. MN

KUBELWAGEN AND SCHWIMMWAGEN, A VISUAL HISTORY OF THE GERMAN ARMY’S MULTI-PURPOSE VEHICLES

DAVID DOYLE, AMPERSAND PUBLISHING GROUP www.casematepublishing.co.uk The Kubelwagen and its amphibious cousin the Schwimmwagen are classic military modelling subjects and this new book from David Doyle through Ampersand provides a mass of material for anyone wanting to go to town on a kit, whether in 1:72, 1:48, 1:35 or 1:16; Tamiya are re-issuing their superb kit in the latter scale. The 136+ pages within soft covers are filled with large format photographs showing the real things in action (there’s more on the Kubel because more of this type were manufactured and deployed), plus a mountain of walk-around photos of preserved examples, which give the modeller all of the superdetailing cues he or she needs. I

’m not sure if I’m being a little cheeky using this selfie of Tamiya President, Mr Shunsaku Tamiya and myself here, but the image makes me so happy, I simply had to share it! 2017 marks the fiftieth year of Mr Tamiya’s attendance of the Nuremberg Toy Fair and I took the selfie at this year’s event, on Tamiya’s large and impressive stand. At the age of eightytwo, Mr Tamiya is in very good health and still full of the charm and warmth that captivated me when I first met him almost a quarter of a century ago. So, this is my way of saying congratulations to Mr Tamiya and the Tamiya Plastic Model Company. Here’s for fifty more years of success! ● See you again next time

Editor's Choice

PLATZ 1:12 THE BONSAI www.platz-hobby.com 1:12 Bonsai trees are perhaps not the most obvious of modelling accessories, but when these arrived from Platz in Japan, I was so enchanted with them, I just had to have them as my ‘Editor’s Choice’. The four branches are moulded from brown, injection-moulded polystyrene, three of which are tipped with static grass to form the ‘leaves’. The branches fit into a moulded base which in turn sits on a table. A rectangle of wood completes the job. Lovely!
