A new concept in Tamiya radio control is born! When the Dancing Rider Trike turns, the three-wheel chassis leans into the corner much like one would see on real delivery trikes such as those widely used by fast food companies in Japan. The two sections are linked in the middle and a steering servo leans the entire front section left and right to effect turns. FULL-BUILD: AFV MODEL CONVERSION TAMIYA 1:35 ISU-152 ● KIT NO.35303

STALIN'S STEEL PUSH

I

f there is one quality that draws me to Soviet armour – besides the brutishly simple 'form follows function' design aesthetic, it is the sheer versatility/longevity of it. Not only did most Soviet tank platforms have myriad variants and special role vehicles based upon them but they often ended up refitted and redeployed for a second or even third lifetime of use. Just when you think you've pretty much seen everything there is of a particular Soviet tank, some oddball conversion invariably comes out of the internet woodwork and takes your breath away... This was exactly the case with the 'ISU Freight Yard Railway Pusher',

8

for lack of any known official designation. Having succumbed to Tamiya's 1:35 ISU-152 kit I was determined to find some way of putting my mark on it, making if different from all the rest, when one lone photograph of this unique beast at a military meet somewhere in Poland appeared in my search results. Tantalising as it was frustrating; What was it? Why could I not find any other photographs? Then, some time later, Muzeum Gryf in Poland started posting images of a very sorry-looking ISU hull they had acquired for restoration back to a self propelled gun... And the pieces began to fit together. It was the very same Pusher, with all

the ironmongery gas-axed off the front. Ironically this crude surgery yielded the dimensions, angles and fixing points I needed to make this project viable. The game was on!

BACKGROUND

So, how do we know this one-off vehicle was a railway 'pusher'? To better understand this it helps to appreciate a little of the history of the ISU-152. In 1943 a requirement was realised for a tank destroyer capable of taking out German Panthers and Tigers. After initial testing, a KV tank based SU-152 self propelled gun was rejected and the IS-2 tank chosen as a replacement platform. The ISU-152, as this

was then called, went into service in 1944, played a crucial role in the Battle for Berlin and was used through to the 1970s in one form or another. Its terrible destructive power gave rise to the grimly appropriate nickname Зверобой (Beast Killer), a Russian nickname for St.John's Wort, which is poisonous to livestock if eaten. As with any tank, you need an armoured recovery vehicle of comparable or greater size and so some ISU hulls were set aside for use in that role. The initial conversions basically amounted to plating over the empty hull front and providing pioneer tools. In the 1950s, when improved stowage and different

ISU-152K and ISU-152M variants, earlier vehicles were withdrawn and some refitted either as BTT-1 recovery vehicles (with heavy winching gear, rear spade, cargo deck, small derrick crane) or as ISU-K command/radio vehicles (with additional radio gear and greater fuel capacity). Examples of both BTT-1 and ISU-K can be seen at Yad La Shiryon in Israel. Upon withdrawal from military service some of these BTT-1 found their way into use on the Russian railways, and there is much photographic evidence to support this. Based on images found online, and Jochen Vollert's excellent Tankograd book 'IS ARVs', I am convinced that my 'pusher' started life as a post war ISU-K, with extra radio gear and tell-tale fender mounts for auxiliary oil tank and tool box. The clues to it being a railway tank were in the gloss green paint crudely applied to the 'pusher' superstructure and similar rigs welded to the front of T-34/85 hulls known to be in railway service. This particular vehicle does however appear to have been one of a kind.

THE BUILD

Tamiya's ISU-152 is one of the most enjoyable kits I have assembled in years; just the right balance of detail versus parts for an end result that stands its ground straight out of the box. My only hesitancy resulted from the two part upper hull construction, but the fit was good enough between front and back section that I was confident of being able to hide any evidence of a join with the heavy rusting and weathering this model was going to receive. The poly-caps in the return rollers were an

Weathering in progress. Built up rust tones and weeping streaks are beginning to create depth and character

especially nice touch and made test-fitting of running gear a breeze. The link and length tracks, although not appropriate for this vehicle, looked the part and they went in the spares box. Construction of the running gear, lower and upper hulls proceeded exactly as per the instructions, the only deviation being the removal of the rear fender flaps and trimming of the location tabs for extra fuel drums. Removing the rear fenders did require some careful reshaping of the hull plate, shimming with Evergreen plastic strip and a pair of

flap retaining bars, each with four holes courtesy of a suitable micro-drill. A grab handle from the spares box was also added to the rear hull plate, but otherwise the engine deck remained unaltered. At this point, having sealed the upper and lower hull, I turned my attention to the tracks, which 'make' a tank and a test fit can be a great motivator during an involved project. My pusher required 'heavy duty' links seen on post-war vehicles and so a couple of relaxing evenings with a set of Friulmodel ATL-14 tracks followed. I choose

to 'pin' all of my tracks together with Albion Alloys 0.5mm brass rod, which is far stiffer/straighter than the wire supplied by Friuls and far less prone to bending and stretching. The extra expense is truly worth it and saves issues with track tension later on. Initially, I opted for the 'correct' number of links and the typical top run sag seen on so many ISU-152. This, however, proved wrong as the missing tonnage of the 152mm armament and ammunition made the real vehicle ride higher, with taut tracks, an effect I replicated by removing a link each side instead of dropping the suspension arms. Moving on and armed with all important measurements and photos, it was now time

to tackle the business end of this build. Luckily, the sheer range of Plastruct shapes meant I could use preformed sections throughout, using raw styrene sheet only for large flat areas. Firstly, the hull front was blanked off using 1mm sheet, taking great care to observe the cut outs for fender and driver's vision port. I made the blanking plate as a single piece even though the real vehicle shows three strips, intending to use Archer weld beads to complete the effect. At this point, the job became somewhat three-handed, combining known dimensions for the huge 'I' beam bracing with suck-it-and-see ideas about angle, length and placement. I chose to prove my theories with cardboard and Blu-Tack before

committing to plastic and it turned out to be relatively simple, one angle unlocking the next and so on... The only hull alteration require was the removal of the top row of track link mounts, to allow the box section pusher body to mate with the hull. The main bulk of the conversion work achieved, smaller embellishments such as angle iron stops, towing lugs and corner bracing were added. This was my first experience of using Archer Fine Transfers resin weld beads, and the process could not have been simpler measure, cut, soak, apply, fix with Micro-Sol. The realism these weld beads add cannot be overstated, they should be in every scratch builders arsenal. A general set, such

as AR88006, has enough variety and 'footage' to last several projects. Satisfied that it was now safe to do so, I concentrated on the smaller hull details. First off I cut back the front fenders which do not extend nearly so far on this vehicle, Then added the two 'mystery' tubes, one on each side. Raiding the styrene shapes I approximated the mounting brackets for the missing fender mounted oil tank and toolbox. The light cage needed for the hull front was made by cutting a styrene form and wrapping brass rod around it to create the distinctive shape. I used this form to assist in locating / gluing the brass to the hull and added the cross members afterwards. Tool location holes on the

and so filled with putty. Extra grab rails were then mounted along both sides and retaining hooks for tow cables fashioned out of more brass rod. Extra CA glue was added to these after mounting to emulate the rough welds that hold these hooks on the real vehicle. It then only remained to carve an aerial mount by turning a piece of sprue in a mini-drill and adding personal touches like removed or blanked off periscopes.

CONCLUSION

This was a most enjoyable project of unique and unusual beast. The quality of the Tamiya kit made life so much easier by allowing me to focus on the challenges of scratchbuilding instead. Planning the painting and weathering revealed a great deal about how wear and tear occurs and how to replicate it realistically. I would thoroughly recommend building 'outside of the box' now and again, to challenge your own observational and modelling skills. â—?

he US Sherman tank, a reliable machine that was available in huge numbers, was a game-changer for the Allies in WWII and the late-model ‘Easy Eight’ was arguably its most effective incarnation. Following WW2, a number were refurbished and thrown back into action by a largely demobilised US Army in the Korean War from 1950. They faced T-34-85s operated by the Korean People’s Army with great success. Tamiya

has re-issued the recently issued 1:35 M4A3E8, this time with Korean War-specific features such as a late-production exhaust deflector, revised engine deck, double-pin T80 tracks, field telephone and a new-tool .50cal MG. Two marking options are included; ‘Rice’s Red Devils’ (with new colour scheme based upon the most up-to-date reference sources) of C Company, 89th Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, 1951 and a vehicle from C Company,

few days ago I received another kit from Editor. This time it was the Belkits brand new Volkswagen Polo WRC 2015 Monte Carlo. After a quick inspection I noticed this one looks great; very nicely detailed and sharp. They released it as a Monte Carlo version, which is cool, because I always try to build the Monte Carlo version whenever build a rally car kit. It also comes with two PE frets and big sheet of decals. First off, I started to cut all the parts from the sprues and clean them up. My first impression was that there were no sinkholes, just some mould lines that I scraped away with a modelling knife. I sanded them smooth and gave them a soapy bath and a good rinse, then let them dry for a few days.

BODYSHELL PREP

The body looks good and has some very nice detail. I deepened the panel lines and used some Mr Hobby Surfacer 500 to fill in the area where I went outside the panel lines. After sanding this smooth, I drilled out the moulded-in rivets and sprayed a coat of Tamiya grey primer; looking good so far. Next up were a few coats of Tamiya white primer which was left to harden for a few days. No sanding need, because the surface looked very smooth. The first layer of topcoat was from Zero Paints' Polo WRC set; first the white and then the shell was masked off for the blue. The blue looked fantastic when clear-coated. After a few days of drying, I started the application of the decals. The big markings were a

bit of a pain, because they didn’t react to Microscale Set, so I switched to Daco Medium setting solution and it worked fine. With all transfer in place, the body was cleaned with a microfibre cloth and left

it dry, yet again. until the final Zero Paints 2k clear-coat. I test-fitted the windows, masked them up and painted them Semi Gloss Black from Tamiya. I also dry-fitted the front and rear lights and painted the

INTERIOR AND CHASSIS:

The chassis, interior and rollcage were primed with Alclad white primer and painted in Motip gloss white. I masked of the door panels and painted them with Motip semi-gloss black. The fire extinguishers were painted with Zero Paints Chrome, followed by a few coats of Tamiya X-27 Clear red. The springs of the suspension were painted with Zero Paints XF-56 variant. Hand-brushed Vallejo Model Air chrome and Model Color Red and Yellow were used on the springs and the other suspension parts were painted with Zero Paints Gloss Black. The brake discs were also painted with Zero Paints XF-56 variant and hand-painted with Vallejo Chrome and Tamiya X-32. Note that all parts that were treated with metallic paints were painted first with Zero Paints Gloss Black.

As always, the windscreen needs very careful masking and painting to look good

The typically sparse rally interior is replicated perfectly in the kit. Note the trailing harnesses, soon to be attached to the roll cage

ASSEMBLY V FINAL The chassis was next

on the list. First off, the engine part was cemented in place together with the suspension, exhaust and driveshaft, followed by the rear suspension and fuel tanks. I test-fitted the brake discs and glued them into place. All went together well. After this was completed, I moved onto on the interior. I used the kit-supplied seatbelts (fabric and photo-etch) then fixed the rollcage in place plus the

20

dashboard/steering column. Some remaining decals were applied to the seats they were then cemented to the interior floor. The windows were fitted using a new CA glue that can be used on clear parts too; Bob Smith Industries Super Gold +. It’s a very good quality glue and it doesn’t fog up the clear parts after application. The front and rear headlights were then installed and I could finally marry the body to the chassis and interior. The

fit here was pretty good; it needed some fiddling and pulling, but in the end it went together very well. I glued the side windows in place and attached the spoiler. After a night of drying I began the final lap; side mirrors antennae and PE mesh for the front grill and bonnet. The last decals were applied to the sunscreen, side windows and front grill. As a final touch I added some PE rivets from Hobby Design for a more realistic look.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I went a bit out of my comfort zone with this one, because I only tend to build rally cars when I’m in need of something different. Belkits have made a great attempt to produce a nice model. It’s not quite Tamiya quality, but with some effort it can build into a very attractive replica of this handsome little car. I’m glad that I finished this one without any major issues; dry fitting is key, as with any other model. I love the RedBull livery very much

oi Su-33 from Patrick Branly builds the 1:72 Sukhfrom Eduard Zvezda and adds some PE essentials

T

he Sukhoi Su-33 has been at the forefront of the international scene during the deployment of the aircraft carrier Kuznetzov off the Syrian coast in the winter of 2016/2017. It was on this occasion that this air superiority fighter embarked on a bombardment following the integration of the SVP-24 advanced fire control. The offensive charge was limited to two 500kg FAB-500 ballistic bombs between the engines, but the

22

attack was conclusive. The modest airborne group of fourteen combat aircraft (ten Su-33 and four MiG-29KR) led 420 missions for two months with the loss of just one Su-33 equipped with SVP-24, No.67 that I chose to represent here. On December 3rd, 2016 during landing, the arrestor cable of the aircraft carrier broke and the aircraft continued its course before hitting to sea; the pilot ejected and was recovered. A similar accident had already happened in 2005.

MISSION READINESS

After their MiG-29 9-13 and Su-27SM, Zvezda has continued with the theme of Russian fighter planes of the 21st century with this new-tool Su-33. I started construction with external loads by selecting a typical fit for operations in Syria. I prepared two air-to-air missiles R-73 (AA-11 Archer) and two R-27s (AA-10 Alamo) with their respective pylons. The general colour of the missiles is white (Tamiya X-2) with fins in R-27 Duralumin (ALC-102).

The pylons are not the colour of the underside of the plane and were inspired by reference photos; I opted for the XF-83 Medium Sea Grey. I prepared and painted the wheels with the green typical of Soviet and then Russian aircraft; Xtracolor green X628. As for the tyres, I usually use X203 grey-black of the same brand. I then prepared the components of the engines with the face of the first stage of the compressor visible at the bottom of the air intake duct, as well as

jet nozzles equipped with afterburners. For these different parts I used Alclad metallic shades.

ADDING PHOTO-ETCH

Having the Eduard set for this model, I put it to good use, starting with the FOD protection grids that prevent the ingestion of foreign objects by the jet engines. When stopped, these grids lie flat in the air intake veins and are therefore not very visible, especially since I chose to use the air inlet shutters supplied by Zvezda.

The more interesting parts of Eduard set 73580 are the instrument panels of the cockpit, which are much more visible. I took grey-blue FS15237 (Xtracolor X126) as the overall shade of the cockpit and then glued in the pre-painted Eduard parts. The fuselage is split in two along a horizontal axis, as is often the case with modern airframes. I added Eduard details in the undercarriage bays before gluing cementing to the underside. The main undercarriage bays are well detailed with walls

Eduard PE parts add a bit of detail to the nosewheel well. In 1:72, these 'flat' conduits look okay

V consisting of four elements.

The air intake vanes of the engines fit together perfectly and mount with ease on the airframe. If there is a constant theme during the construction of this kit, it is the precision of the assembly, confirming that nowadays, Zvezda fit right in among the elite model manufacturers. Before assembling the half-fuselages, I added some details to the bottom of the UC bays and painted them.

The general colour is red, preceded by a layer of satin white to get achieve a bright colour. The joint between the half-fuselages is minimal and disappears with a light sanding.

BROKEN WINGS

Zvezda offers a wingfold option that I retained, even if though 'breaks' the general shape of the plane. The fit of the control surfaces are very good and can be painted separately before fixing them to the wings. To

Here are the components of the Eduard instrument panel; more realistic than the plastic parts of the original kit

ensure that the model would rest on its three wheels, I copiously filled the radar cone with small fishing pellets. Once the cone had been cemented in place and the joint sanded, I could go to the paint shop.

ANY COLOUR, SO LONG AS IT'S BLUE

There are many pictures of this fighter showing that its camouflage has evolved over time and I relied on some of them to paint the model. First of all, I painted

in Tamiya X-2 White (gloss) the many dielectric panels on the plane. Once the white was dry, I masked them off with Tamiya tape. The undercarriage bays were sealed off with moistened tissue paper, which conforms to the convoluted shapes. I then pre-shaded black to emphasize the structural lines. Inspired by photos of real Su-33s, I was able to determine the three shades of blue that compose its camouflage scheme. The Finally the final red, well ‘lit’ by the undercoat of white. Subsequently, a dark colour-wash of Tamiya X-19 will augment the contrast of this poorly illuminated area

Some home-made cabling was fixed to the roofs of the UC bays, in the upper half-fuselage. Lead wire of different diameters available in fishing tackle stores are very useful for this

lightest, covering the entire airframe is Light Grey RLM76 (Mr Hobby H-417). The mid-blue is the Agama R31 acrylic, but for the dark blue, I had to resort to a mix of Mr Hobby tints: x8 parts of H-56, x6 parts of H-45 and x1 part of H-25. I painted all the elements by following the best images available. It goes without

saying that I had to retouch to ensure the continuity of the colours between the differing airframe parts once assembled. I then defined the zones to receive metallic tones, such as the surrounds of the jet nozzles and the muzzle of the gun. I did the same with the white for the radome. For the latter, the Tamiya's new flexible tape

was very useful in order to marry the conical shape. The leading edges were been masked off and painted in matt aluminium. Several coats of gloss varnish homogenized the various camouflage hues, but no varnish was applied to the metal parts to preserve their reflective finish. One of the weak points of

Zvezda kits in the past was the quality of the decals. Progress has been made and these perfectly fit the shapes and detail of the model. Once the transfers were dry, I applied several dark grey colour-washes along the lines of structure, plus thin layers of matt varnish to match the general appearance of this aircraft.

FINALLY... V AND On the undercarriage legs,

although well detailed, I replaced the scissor-links with parts from the Eduard set and added hydraulic lines in lead wire (preferable to the 'flat' parts in PE). The legs were painted with Humbrol 128 grey. The ejection seat is the standard kit part, embellished with a harness and accessories by Eduard. The overall colour of the seat is a very dark grey that translates to Xtracolor X203. All I then had to do was bring together the previously prepared sub-assemblies, including the wings, fins, cockpit access ladder, Pitot, canopy and finally the tip of the nose. With this Su-33, Zvezda confirms the level of quality they have achieved in recent years and kit releases from the brand have become a must for fans of modern Russian fighter planes in 1:72. Although the Su-27/33 are impressive size aircraft, at this scale their size is quite manageable. And the wingfolds helped a lot when adding the model to my display case! â—? L

ast issue we took an (all too brief) look at the initial construction stages of Tamiya's new 1:48 Messerschmitt Bf109G-6, including the cockpit and initial work on the airframe. With the floor, bulkhead and seat built into a neat little module, it could be inserted into the fuselage, which had been assembled by this point. Three markings options are provided with this kit and it's essential that the modeller decides which one they will build before starting the model, because numerous holes need drilling from the inside of the wing and fuselage parts and this will be nigh-on impossible to do with any degree of accuracy on the assembled airframe. I recommend the

use of a highlight pen to mark up the instructions where these version-specific holes should be made, just to be sure, much like one might do with the Christmas issue of the Radio Times. Some small modifications are needed too, such as the removal of two, raised teardrop shapes on the fuselage side for options A and C (I remembered to do this) plus the same operation for the engine cowlings (I forgot to do this on the closed-cowling, oops). As mentioned last time, some redundant access hatches on the wings and fuselage need filling and this was accomplished by flowing cyanoacrylate adhesive (superglue) into the recessed detail and sanding flat once the glue had set. Their

presence hints at the future release of different versions of the late-type Bf109 by Tamiya, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.. The engine is moulded simply in two halves with ancillary items fitted to its back end, plus supercharger, exhausts, their mounting blocks and shrouds. The assembled block was sprayed semi-gloss black but not before I made an attempt to add the ignition cabling to each of the twenty-four spark-plugs. At the time this seemed like a good idea and on the finished model I do think it looks quite good, but it took a while, as each spark-plug top and outlet from the cable conduit needed drilling out and a small piece of brass tubing adding, as can be seen in the

pre-paint photo opposite. I used fine fishing line for the ignition leads themselves, all secured with superglue. It was quite a fiddle and as I ran out of time to add any further plumbing to the engine, it is somewhat of an unfinished work. This operation, plus the addition of copper wire brake lines on the main undercarriage legs, a brass tube Pitot tube, steel wire cowling props and clear navigation lights were the only noteworthy alterations made to the kit. The latter involved cutting out the moulded-in lights from the wingtip parts, filling the gap with oversized pieces of clear polystyrene then filing and sanding to shape. It’s a minor change, but worthwhile I think.

The 30-litre drop-tank comprises two halves and a tail-cone, with an internal insert that provides a rugged mounting pin

The 'Rüstsätze' MG151 20mm cannon gondolas each build up from two halves, sandwiching a central section that carries the mounting pins and gun barrel. A beautifully simple and elegant design solution

The drop-tank’s mounting pin pushes up into a polycap, installed during construction within the ETC ordnance rack

One slight negative point of this kit are the solid-moulded wingtip lights. Painting these never looks quite right, so the areas that should be transparent were carved out and chunks of plastic snipped from the clear sprue superglued in place

32

Once the glue had cured, the clear sprue inserts were filed and sanded to shape. Much better!

February 2018 TMMI 268

05/01/2018 10:46

The engine was then sprayed semi-gloss black; the ignition cables and their conduits were hand-painted with silver-coloured paint

The engine block was wired-up using short lengths of Albion Alloys' brass tubing and fine fishing line

COWLINGS ON OR OFF? BOTH!

The big feature of Tamiya's new Gustav is the opportunity to display the engine via open cowlings and to also have those cowlings closed up to better show off the profile of the aircraft. This is achieved with a set of dedicated parts for each mode (plus a partial disassembly of the engine) rather than trying to incorporate tiny hinges. And it works extremely well. Tamiya proved that neodymium magnets – first

seen in the 1:32 Spitfire Mk.IX – are strong enough to hold quite substantial sub-assemblies together, but are tiny enough to hide within model parts, even quite small ones such as a 1:48 Messerschmitt. Coupled with Tamiya's peerless engineering precision, we have a kit that magically pulls apart and changes appearance with no detail compromises. Magnificent. One of the absolutely essential factors in the successful 'look' of any Bf109 model is the position at which the main

Tamiya provide a decal for the blue 'Reich Defence' band around the rear fuselage, but it's almost as easy to spray it on; a custom mix of Mr Color paints was used here. The edges of the band were masked off with ultra narrow masking tape, then the rest blanked off with regular tape

Here we can see that the RLM75 Grauviolet (MMP-050) has been applied to the upper area of the fuselage and wings. Using a photocopy of the colour guide included in the kit box, masks were trimmed out in preparation for the Graugrün splinter pattern

undercarriage legs are set. On the real aircraft they splay awkwardly outwards and forwards and this precise angle can be very difficult to attain and maintain, as they tend to sag over time. In Tamiya's new kit, each leg comes with a oversized, rearwardfacing bracket with two very positive cementing points. Once the legs and airframe have been assembled, the lugs are fed into the undercarriage bays and cemented firmly in place, all hidden by a perfect-fitting panel, added once the legs'

glue has set. This is a subtle but very significant advance and is a foolproof way to give the model the correct 'sit' when complete. There are several general options offered in the kit, including raised or drooped radiator and main flaps, extended or retracted leading-edge slats, open or closed canopy as well as version-specific Rüstsätze' MG151 20mm cannon gondolas and thirty-litre drop-tank. My chosen markings-option did have the fuel tank fitted but not the 20mm cannons, but I

The party trick of Tamiya's new Gustav is the choice of open and closed engine cowlings, facilitated by micro-magnets and some very fine engineering tolerances. It looks very impressive indeed when opened up

Mission Models offer a wide range of RLM colour-matched, acrylic paints and they come highly recommended; www.missionmodelsus.com

V decided to employ a little

'modellers' license' and fit them anyway. My rationale for this is that I wanted to show them off for the purpose of this review, plus they look pretty cool, which was enough justification for me. Back to the main flaps and leading edge slats;

The bottom cowling is attached to the lower part of the engine (its cylinder heads) and the whole sub-assembly is fixed to the model with a tiny but powerful magnet

Tamiya's designers have displayed their usual flair here, offering the choice of raised or lowered positions with the simple addition of snip-off tabs for either mode. Extremely easy to achieve and robust when in place. For the more complex radiator flaps, alternative

'hinge' parts are provided for up or down states and there are even radiator faces inside, barely visible on the finished model, but we know they are there.

PAINTING THE GUSTAV: MISSION MODELS

Three decal schemes come with the kit; 'Yellow 1' of 9./JG54, February 1944, a second 'Yellow 1' of 9./ JG52 Novo-Zaporozhye, October 1943 and 'White 9' of 7./JG27 Maleme, Crete, December 1943. All three sport the RLM 74/75 splinter camouflage with mottled fuselage sides and RLM76 light blue undersurfaces. I chose the 'Yellow 1' box-art scheme; Bf109G-6 W.Nr 440141 of Oblt. Wilhelm Schilling, February 1944,

who was shot down in this aircraft on 20th February 1944 and lived to tell the tale. It is quite a colourful machine, with the yellow rudder and lower cowling, blue Reichsluftverteidigung (RV) band and two unit shields along the fuselage. The 74/75/76 camouflage was created using Mission Models' superb acrylic paints which are very modellerfriendly. They require some practice as the thinning ratios are slightly different to Tamiya's acrylic paints (explained on the Mission Models website), but once you have experimented a little, they work extremely well. The yellow and blue portions were created using Mr Color lacquers because the areas painted

The process of switching between open and closed configurations is straightforward but must be done with great care in order not to knock off the open canopy, aerial wire, Pitot and other delicate items on the model

With all cowling parts removed, we can get a good look at the completed DB605, 37.5 litre V12 engine, which is beautifully detailed. The top is sitting slightly proud here, lifted upwards when the cowlings were taken off. The remains of the location pin can be seen in the dome-shaped structure...

With the propeller removed and the circular, forward part of the upper cowling pulled away (also secured by a magnet), the upper engine access panel assembly can be lifted away. This is usually centred with a location pin that fits into the top of the engine, but a mishap with a bottle of varnish falling off a shelf and onto the model (oh how we laughed..) means it was snapped off. The pin was originally located where the grey dot can be seen in this photo

The next step is to lift off the forward cockpit panel, to which is cemented the front canopy. The fit of this sub-assembly is quite remarkable, even with the inevitable paint build-up

white spiral on the spinner boss was a relative breeze to apply; not usually the case with these things. Weathering was restricted to brownish, sooty exhaust deposits trailing back from the outlets plus a few dings and scrapes created with

The yellow-painted lower cowling is seen here, cemented to the cylinder heads of the engine, which are at the bottom on this inverted V12 powerplant. Note the detail on the inside of the panel; the radiator is fully detailed inside and even comes with a flap actuator, the rod that can be observed in this photo

The forward cockpit shroud can be seen here, with instrument panel and gunsight fixed in place

a silver colouring pencil. Accentuating panel lines is a matter of personal taste; I usually do it because I'm a creature of habit (plus, I like they way they look) and using Tamiya's ' Panel Line Accent Color' in black, brown and grey, it's just so easy.

THOUGHTS AND CONCLUSIONS

Oh, please, not another model of a Bf109. It's the almost Pavlovian response to the release of a new kit of this diminutive WW2 fighter and if you're not into them, it's an understandable

U

The next part to come off in readiness for the installation of the closed-up cowlings is the engine bearer assembly, which is also home to the twin fuselage machine guns, their cartridge chutes and the engine's top panel. Note the decal here, a nice touch

V reaction. But – and it's

a major 'but' – this ain't no ordinary Bf109. It's a Tamiya '109 and that means there will be something special about it. This is certainly the case, not just because of the open and closed cowlings, but because of the sheer quality of the production. Tamiya's

designers simply do not possess the ability to say 'that's close enough'. It has to be perfect or it doesn't get released. The Gustav has been released and it's about as close to perfect as a model aircraft kit gets, whether or not you like the subject. And that's quite some accolade. Buy it, build it, love it. ●

KIT PREVIEW 1:12 FIAT 500F â—? KIT NO.4703

Italeri's all-new 1:12 Fiat 500 packs in heaps of features and is detailed inside and out

CINQUECENTO BELLISSIMO! T

he 'Nuova 500' was produced by Fiat from 1957 to 1975. It is a true motoring icon and its advanced design is known and loved around the globe. The goal was simple; to introduce a very affordably priced compact car that would be within reach of ordinary people everywhere, from cities to the countryside. It would

38

be easy to drive, park and maintain, with impressive fuel economy and a deceptively large carrying capacity. The car has become an all-time classic and is an exercise in efficient automotive design. Italeri have done the little 'New 500' with this new kit; it is fully detailed inside and out with a complete engine that, as the over-used but

still valid expression goes, is a little kit all to itself, provided with vinyl hoses for the fuel and ignition systems. Similarly, the cabin doesn't miss a trick, with a choice of left or righthand drive set-ups, impressive photo-etched brass floormats, tilting front-passenger seats and fully detailed door-cards. The front wheels are

fully workable via the steering wheel, thanks to a worm-gear steering box and the suspension is workable, via metal springs. The sunroof can be fitted open or closed, the passenger doors open and the bonnet and boot lids are hinged to reveal detailed interiors. A 'chromed' sprue provides the main front 'grille' badge, wipers hubcaps and window

A fully detailed engine, plus all its pipework is included with Italeri’s kit

At the front, we find the battery, fuel tank and screen-wash bottle

Metal suspension springs, three gauges of black vinyl tubing, copper wire, nylon mesh and clear fuel hose will all be found in the large kit box. In the images below, we can see parts for the engine, gearbox and the high standard of detail is clear to see. Note the photo-etched floormats and badges

surrounds and the 'FIAT 500' and 'Nuova 500' badges come as photo-etched parts for realism and accuracy. This is a fantastic release from Italeri and will provide a huge amount of entertainment for the modeller, who can choose whether to depict their model factory fresh, or with a 'lived-in' look. â—?

The cockpit is completely made over, a incredibly thorough engine is provided and the wing gun-bays are given the full interior detail treatment. The detail is breathtaking, particularly in this scale where the parts are tiny; you'll need modelling skill and good eyesight to get the most from this production. LIFECOLOR, ITALY

www.airbrushes.com Two new paint sets are on release from Lifecolor; six shades for British WW2 uniforms and the same number of paints for Russian infantry uniforms (it should really say 'Soviet' to reflect the diversity of nations who fought under the Red Flag), also from the WW2 era. It's remarkably difficult to mix these colours with accuracy and variation; one can get close, but if the greens are even slightly off, they can look wrong on a figure. Well done to Lifecolor for coming up with them. They can be airbrushed or hand-painted and dry with a fully matt finish. BRITISH INFANTRY UNIFORMS WWII (CS41) RUSSIAN INFANTRY UNIFORMS WWII (CS42)

KIT PREVIEW HAULER 1:72 TELEFUNKEN FUSE 62 WÜRZBURG RADAR ● KIT NO.HLP72020

SEEING IS BELIEVING A delicious new 1:72 kit of a WW2 German Würzburg FuSe 62D radar station is on release from Hauler

T

his new production from Hauler depicts a Würzburg radar station that was used in WW2 by the Luftwaffe for aerial target location and flak (anti-aircraft) direction. The original could be rotated 360 degrees and elevated from 0 to 90 degrees. This particular design was mounted on a four-wheeled carriage that would have been pulled by a support vehicle; perhaps an Opel Blitz or similar. Hauler have done an absolutely magnificent job here, with detail-packed resin castings for all the main structural parts plus a supplemental sheet of photo-etched brass for the sheet-metal components. The main dish is a one-piece casting and includes the rear frame formed integrally. The castings are very clean and will need only minimal

clean-up; don’t forget that polyurethane resin can only be glued with cyanoacrylate adhesives (superglue) or two-part epoxy. Usual modelling liquid or tube cements will not work. Normal model paints can be used with ease though, normally better applied

over a light undercoat of primer. To finish off the model, a decal for enemy aircraft ‘kills’ is included, to be placed on the centre of the dish. Wonderful stuff and a lovely addition to a small-scale diorama. ●

TAMIYA, JAPAN

TYRRELL P34 SIXWHEELER 1976 JAPAN GP www.hobbyco.net SCALE 1:20 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, PE, WS, PC ITEM NO.20058 What more can be said about the Tyrrell P34 that hasn’t already been said? It’s the most instantly identifiable Formula 1 car of all time and a revolutionary concept. It’s not exactly beautiful, but it is certainly fascinating and deeply cool. Tamiya launched the 1:20 kit in 1977 and it has re-appeared half a dozen times in the intervening forty years; in 2010 the kit was issued with a generously proportioned photoetched sheet that provided new front and rear wing end-plates, wing strut, brake-rotor faces, radiator matrix faces, engine screen ‘tent’, seat harness hardware, front splitter and other small fittings. This latest issue was to commemorate Tamiya’s fiftieth year of participation at the Nuremberg Toy Fair (1967-2017) and has a neat little gold logo on the box top. The plastic parts are not as perfectly engineered as today’s generation of kits, but you’d expect a lot of moulding progress in four decades; with some gentle sanding, the body will quickly be ready for its undercoat and top colour. The Cosworth DFV is a lovely replica and with some fuel lines (Tamiya provide the ignition harness) it will look perfect. The P34 never goes out of style and Tamiya can re-issue it as many times as they like! A little more TLC will be needed than for more recent releases, but not much more

REVELL, EUROPE

STAR WARS SITH INFILTRATOR, REPUBLIC GUNSHIP, OBI-WAN’S JEDI STARFIGHTER www.revell.de/en SCALE: 1:257, 1:172, 1:80 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO.03612, 03613, 03614 We’re review all three of these kits in one slot here, but they are available to buy individually. Revell have done a fantastic job with each one; they are tiny, but very well detailed and have enough parts to offer plenty of assembly fun without being too time-consuming. All are moulded in plain white plastic (actually a very pale light grey) and come with clear parts for canopies and windows, plus a sheet of proper waterslide decals. The Sith Infiltrator has a decent cockpit interior and even comes with seated and standing Darth Maul figures! Likewise, the Republic Gunship has its own decals but alas, no Stormtrooper figures for its open crew bay. Clear gun-pods are provided for the wings. Obi-Wan’s Starfighter comes with a very tidy cockpit with seat, control yoke, instrument panel and a seated figure of the great man himself, in the characteristic robes. An R@ unit’s head is also provided.

Small but really well detailed kits, plenty of parts and the figures are a welcome inclusion Really tricky to find any negatives here - even the prices are excellent, all around £6

FINE MOLDS, JAPAN

IJA MEDIUM TANK TYPE 89 KO www.finemolds.co.jp SCALE: 1:35 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.FM56 The Japanese Type 89 is a fascinating design from the 1930s and it has that distinctive pre-war look to it. Fine Molds’ kit was created a few years back and was initially released with a magazine in Japan as a cover-mounted gift over several issues. Quite a gift! The model is now available as a complete boxed release, a far more convenient solution that’s can be bought easily by all. The kit is magnificent, with fine reproductions of rivets across all surfaces of the outer hull, including the belly-plate. The tracks come in the form of onepiece flexible plastic mouldings and are excellent; the link design is guidehorn-less so they lend themselves to this medium. If you prefer individual links, Model Kasten offer an articulated set (SK-71) moulded in standard kit polystyrene. Fine Molds have done an excellent job of capturing the multi-panelled construction of this machine, with extremely fine recessed and raised detail where appropriate. Instructions for painting the distinctive camouflage, with fiveview colour illustrations showing where each shade should be applied. Markings for three tanks are provided and a brass gun barrel has been produced for it (available to buy separately).

ITALERI, ITALY

RENAULT R5 ALPINE RALLY www.hobbyco.net SCALE: 1:24 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.3652 In 1977 Renault managed to squeeze around 150bhp from their R5 car for the rally prepped machine and it achieved significant success at the San Remo and Monte Carlo rallies of 1978. Italeri’s kit uses moulds from the now defunct Esci brand, which originally released the kit back in the 1970s. The model does show its age but not too badly; Esci were ahead of their time in moulding quality and this kit captured the look of the real R5 rather well. It comes with an engine (mounted ‘back-to-front’ with gearbox forward) and removable bonnet, plus good suspension detail and steerable front wheels. The cabin interior is suitable spartan and is fitted with a half rollcage and fire extinguisher; the enthusiast could go to town in here with superdetailing, if they have the right references. The kit comes with a full suite of headlamps for night stages plus decals for the No.19 car (Ragnotti/ Andrié) and the No.12 car (Frequilin/Delaval), both from the 1978 Monte Carlo Rally. A wonderful piece of retro model motorsport that, with a little work and care, will look great in the display cabinet.

An extremely well detailed kit and a characterful subject choice

An older kit comes back to life; good detail and packed with character and a fantastic subject

Painting that wiggly yellow line can be a fiddle!

A little extra fettling and refinement will be needed TMMI 268 February 2018

SBD-5 DAUNTLESS www.hobbyco.net SCALE: 1:48 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.3652 In the box here we have plastic parts from Accurate Miniatures who first released the kit in the mid 1990s, and it was way ahead of its time back then. It still looks great today, with some of the best detail you’ll see in an aircraft cockpit coming as standard. All that detail can be seen through the ‘greenhouse’ canopy and here we have the option to fit it fully opened up (moulded in five sections) or closed down, with one main moulding plus the forward canopy screen. Back to the cockpit and we have lot of beautifully detailed parts that go into its construction, building onto a floor component that fits upwards into the mated fuselage halves. There’s so much going on here that it’ll be time well spent checking and checking again before any cement is applied. Five markings-options are provided for Royal New Zealand Air Force, United States Navy, Army (A-24B-1) machines, plus two French aircraft, one of which is a post-war Dauntless based on the carrier ‘Arromanches’ off Indochina, 1947. Even after all these years, this is still an excellent kit but it will require some planning and plenty of test fitting to ensure it all comes together well. Fantastic detail all over and attractive markings choices A little more challenging than say, a Tamiya or Hasegawa aircraft kit

ITALERI, ITALY

FORD TRANSIT UK POLICE www.hobbyco.net SCALE: 1:24 MATERIALS: IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO.3657 Italeri are getting the most out of their re-issued Transit Mk.II’s moulds, which, as with the Renault 5 reviewed here, originally came from Italian model manufacturer Esci (pronounced ‘eshi’). Instead of a British Gas vehicle, this time we have a British police van, with blue lights on the roof and a new sheet of decals with the ‘jam sandwich’ stripes, checkered strips, ‘POLICE CONTROL’ logos and badges for five forces around the UK. Internally, there are no changes or additions, so the modeller would need to add their own radio set, light switches and other police equipment for an authentic result. The base kit dates back to the mid 1980s but the detail remains pretty good, with just a little extra clean-up needed on the body and chassis parts. If you prefer not to finish your model as a police wagon, there are loads of possibilities with the model, with heaps of weathering potential; just search the internet for ‘old Ford Transit’ and plenty of ideas will surface. Fantastic retro subject and basically a decent kit, after a little TLC Police version doesn’t come with radio set etc., for the cabin

KIT PREVIEW ZVEZDA 1:72 YAK-130 RUSSIAN TRAINER AIRCRAFT ● KIT NO.7303

Zvezda’s new-tool 1:72 Yakovlev Yak-130 captures the unique profile of Russia’s deadly trainer perfectly

TRAINING TO ATTACK

T

he Yak-130 is ostensibly a trainer aircraft but it was almost designed very much as a combat aircraft, capable of delivering a fairly serious weapons-load. If a military aircraft could be considered to be ‘pretty’, the Yak-130 is surely one of the best-looking out there; its huge, spacious canopy and short fuselage giving it an almost cute, bug-like appearance. Zvezda’s new kit is now out and it does an excellent job of capturing the jet’s lines in 1:72. The airframe parts are state-of-the-art, with beautifully delicate

engraved panel lines that are so fine they are almost not there, perfect for 1:72. Zvezda have come a long, long way from their earlier releases and they have clearly applied their expertise in producing small-scale airliner kits with the ‘130, with exquisitely refined detail in evidence everywhere. Three decal options are provided, with markings for two Russian (one in overall grey and one camouflaged) and one Belorussian (camouflaged) schemes. A decent assortment of underwing ordnance is provided, and even the

two pilot figures are well done. A fantastic new kit of a very attractive-looking modern jet. Good points; Subtle detail everywhere, good variety of ordnance, clear instructions, top subject choice Bad points; Instructions suggest fitting the undercarriage legs early-on in construction, a little illogical. ● AVAILABILITY; Zvezda models and accessories are available from www.hobbyco.net

FULL-BUILD: LARGE SCALE MOTORCYCLE MODEL FACTORY HIRO 1:9 BROUGH SUPERIOR SS 100 ● KIT NO.K485

FOR SALE: ONE BROUGH Renaud Muntzer, an enthusiast of old cars in the scale of 1:1, appreciates the natural patination of the original subjects. The same is true for his models

M

r Georges Brough founded the motorcycle firm 'Brough Superior Ltd' at Haydn Road, Nottingham in 1919. His idea was to offer machines with an irreproachable finish and high performance. And indeed, the brand was recognized for the excellence of its products, which earned them the nickname, the “Rolls Royce of motorcycles”. More than 3,000 Brough Superior motorcycles were produced– all models combined – including about 384 examples of the Super Sport 100, emblematic model of the manufacturer. The version shown here is powered by a twin 998cc JAP (John Alfred Prestwich) V engine. Each motorcycle was delivered with a certificate stating that the machine had been able to maintain a speed greater than 100mph (160.9 km/h) over a quarter-mile distance (402m). Production stopped in 1940 and finally restarted in 2014, although it should be noted that the development of this new version was made in collaboration with the Toulousaine 'Boxer Design' company. TE Lawrence, 'Lawrence of Arabia', was a Brough lover. He owned eight examples and fatally injured himself riding the seventh in his collection, in 1935. Following the discovery of a lot of Brough Superiors in a sorry state in a barn in Cornwall, an auction was organised by Bonhams in 2016. Despite the very advanced state of disrepair of some of them, a world record was set for an British motorbike with a price of £331,900.

FULL-BUILD: LARGE SCALE MOTORCYCLE MODEL FACTORY HIRO 1:9 BROUGH SUPERIOR SS 100 ● KIT NO.K485

Assembling the chain, link by link. Here we see a section of two links taking shape, with the central pins resting in the assembly jig

The ‘riveting’ is carried out by squeezing the soft white metal pins with modelling pliers, trapping each photo-etched link

KIT V EXCEPTIONAL Model Factory Hiro offers

multi-media kits of very high quality whose assembly is not too complicated, but much more demanding than a plastic model; some experience of assembly with resin and white is a fairly essential. This is certainly the case with this 1:9 kit of the Brough Superior, whose price (£499.99 from www.hiroboy.com) reflects its complexity and hand-made nature. At the parts-preparation level, plan for the use of quality files and drills as well as micro screwdrivers. Part of the assembly will be carried out by micro-screws and it is up to the modeller to make the holes, respecting their diameters too! For the assembly of the larger elements such as the frame, the mudguards and the engine block I used two-part epoxy/metal glue which has the advantage of allowing for some adjustment before setting and results in a very strong bond.

Here is the result, a flexible and openwork chain that needs handling with delicacy. Adding to the fun, this motorcycle has two chains...

THE PASSING OF TIME...

Perhaps it was the auction mentioned earlier that gave me the idea of presenting the model as it would be discovered by opening the door of the Cornish barn. So, within this article, rather than describe the complete assembly of the kit, I have chosen to focus on how I aged and rusted-up the model. To reproduce rust, what's better than the real thing? I mainly used rust that I scraped off various rusted metal objects to obtain several shades. Rust powder also provides more raised texture than with finely milled pastels and pigments. The use of complementary commercial products can save time in their implementation but oil paint mixtures are also very good (burnt umber for shading, cadmium orange and translucent red) as well. For the rest of the bike, colour-washes with black, sepia and pale grey oil allowed for a variations

When you need an authentic rust effect, sometimes only the real thing will suffice! A chisel-shaped blade was used to scrape off rust from a piece of oxidised steel

54

The waste metal is then snipped off the cast central pin. It takes ages to do – and not a little stressful – but the chain looks very effective in terms of realism

The preparation of the wheels took quite some time because of a well-established mould part-line. Also, holes must be drilled for the spokes, respecting as much as possible the angle at which they are fitted. The instructions indicate the direction of each spoke

On the hub side, the spokes are bent into the shape of a hook and cut to the right size; a little cyanoacrylate glue helps to fix them

A multi-coloured powder of different grain sizes was obtained, to be sorted according to need

To break the uniformity of black finish on the chain guard, two highly diluted colour-washes of very dark blue and grey gave it a faded appearance, wiping with a cotton swab between each layer to vary the tones of the ‘washes

Wood glue was with water and rust powder. Th applied to the p

To hollow out the tyres, the author ran a hobby knife blade inside each one and then snipped out the waste material with sidecutters

The idea behind this hollowing out process was to simulate a flat tyre

of hues. I tried to not generalise the rust effect on the whole model; some parts do not rust, but simply tarnish. Realistic patination takes time to build up and it's important to work in small areas with plenty of breaks, returning later to the workbench to inspect one's progress and to avoid getting carried away and applying rust everywhere. Keep in mind the overall effect of the final piece if you work in sub-assemblies. We all have old, built-up models with which we are no longer

Wood glue was heavily diluted with water and then added to the rust powder. The mixture was then applied to the part to be treated.

Tamiya Spray TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black was applied to the engine cooling fins. All that remained was to stack them on the central columns of the engine block

satisfied, maybe with broken or missing parts. These can become the test-beds of experimentation on which we can hone our weathering techniques before committing them to an expensive kit such as this. Feel free to experiment and combine different methods to achieve convincing results. I hope this article will make you want to try these 'rusting' techniques! â—? After assembling the engine, the small parts were painted; battery, gear lever, handlebar, dial

Here we see the application of Mig Productions Rust Effects. A cotton pad soaked in lighter fluid was used to mop up any surplus and to create variations in tone

A preparation of three pigments (Mig Productions Europe Dust, Mr Hobby Sand and Light Brown) was made to create the effect of dust. Everything was highly diluted with lighter fuel

And this is what you can achieve in two hours, with the help of a hair dryer to speed drying times

OLDMODELKITS 1:350 SS NORMANDIE OCEAN LINER

Oldmodelkits, with exclusive rights from French Lines, has created a 1:350 limited-run kit of the most beautiful ship ever built; the SS Normandie Ocean Liner

HIGH-SEAS CRUISING, IN ST T

he assembled model measures thirty-five inches (889mm) in overall length and represents the ship as configured on her maiden voyage to New York in 1935. The hull and larger parts are resin that is pressure-cast in de-aired moulds. Two large sheets of photo-etched brass contain the other details. Real wood decking from Scaledecks, decals and a flag sheet complete the ship, right down to the Art-Deco tile and metal assist railing of the tourist-class swimming pool. The kit consists of over 1,100 individual parts: • Detailed resin upper and lower hulls. Can be built full hull or waterline

58

• Detailed resin funnels, lifeboats, Captain's launch, crew skiff, wave breaks, aft stairways, winches, cranes, and other small parts • One photo-etched brass sheet for the davits and related pulleys • One photo-etched brass sheet for railings, ladders, etc. • Three sheets of real wood decks laser cut and printed by Scaledecks • Full colour, screen printed decal sheet • Flag sheet for the maiden New York voyage One DVD with fifty-eight pages of step-by-step, highly detailed and extensively illustrated instructions is provided and it includes rigging

diagrams, painting guide, reference material, building tips and more from the 3D CAD model. The limited-run nature of the kit allows for closely monitored production and quality control. Although the photo-etched parts, wood decking and screen printing are out-sourced, the rest of the kit is manufactured in-house and shipped by just two people! This model is 100% new and the manufacturers believe it is the most accurate and detailed large-scale Normandie kit ever produced. Since the original plans for the ship are lost, research took thousands of hours and many years. Every detail was verified with at least two photos. ●

Book Reviews GOT A NEW BOOK? IF YOU ARE A PUBLISHER WITH A NEW MODELLING RELATED TITLE TO PUBLICISE, WHY NOT SEND IN A COPY FOR REVIEW HERE?

REAL COLORS OF WWII

JURGEN KIROFF, PRZEMYSLAW SKULSKI, MIKE STARMER, STEVEN ZALOGA AK INTERACTIVE https://ak-interactive.com/ We have all seen colour images from the Second World War in older books, in TV documentaries and online, but this new title from AK Interactive cleverly reproduces many in high-quality colour on glossy art paper to allow this ‘visual gold’ to look its best. It’s not just wartime Agfa and Kodachrome here though, the book is also stuffed with new photos of genuine WW2 equipment (mostly German, plus some Soviet items), colour illustrations and black and white images to show how various shades convert into monochrome. A fascinating study and well worth adding to one’s bookshelf.

WINGSPAN 1, 1:32 AIRCRAFT MODELLING

CANFORA GRAPHIC DESIGN AND PUBLISHING www.canfora.se Recently, we reviewed Volume 2 of this series, so we’re looking at books in reverse order! Wingspan 1 is, as you’d expect, the first volume in this series (!), focusing on 1:32 aircraft models in an visually appealing step-by-step/gallery format. Nine models are covered; B-25J Mitchell (HK Models), F4U-1 Corsair (Tamiya) Bf110C-1 (Dragon), Me163 Komet (Meng), Spitfire Mk.VIII (Tamiya), Ki-84 Hayate (Hasegawa), Bf109E-4 (Eduard) and Gloster Meteor F.4 (HK Models). As with Volume 2, the models are completed to extremely high standards by modellers at the tops of their games and whilst the photography is a little dark in places, the overall effect is powerful enough to make one want to climb into the loft and dig out some large-scale kits and get building! Our favourite this time? It has to be Štěpán Lášek’s Bf110C-1. Even in a plain green/light blue scheme, his work in the cockpit, engines and with the weathering are quite simply superb.

FORGOTTEN ARCHIVES 2, THE LOST SIGNAL CORPS PHOTOS

DARREN NEELY, PANZERWRECKS www.panzerwrecks.com The second volume in the ‘Forgotten Archives’ series focuses on WW2 photographs taken by the US Army Signal Corps, a unit that was responsible for some of the war’s most iconic images, as well and literally hundreds of thousands of lesser known but no less fascinating photos. This 240+ page, hard-backed, landscape format production goes some way to addressing this, bringing us some priceless imagery, not just of US military operations but also abandoned Axis machinery. The photographs are mostly reproduced as full-pages, which allows the detail to really be seen, which will please modellers. Types seen in this book include the Sherman tank, of course, but also M36 Jackson, armoured Jeep, M18 Hellcat, M7 Priest, M20 Greyhound armoured car, M5A1 light tank and many more American vehicles and their crews/GIs. The German armour shown includes the Panther, Tiger I, Sd.Kfz.7 halftrack; even the Brits get a page in the form of a Churchill bridge-tank! Fantastic stuff and can be bought in confidence.

Thinny Sticks Our range of Thinny Stick Sanders have been developed specifically to help modellers get to those hard to sand areas on all genres of models. They come in six grits (180/240/400/800/1200) and a buffer (3,000/12,000 grit) and are uniquely shaped to accommodate all your fine sanding scenarios. They are made from the same high quality materials as our Modellers Sanders and are available in packs of six. Thinny Sponges Our Thinny Sponges are designed to compliment our Thinny Stick range. They come in one grit 220, but being a softer sponge it’s equivalent to nearly a 300 grit like the full size Ultimate Modellers Sanders. This will prove to be the go to sander on your bench.

NEW in the ‘HOW TO BUILD...’ series NEW How to Build... TAMIYA 1:32 F4U-1A and F4U-1D CORSAIR When Tamiya released their 1:32 scale Spitfire Mk.IXc in 2009, they set a new standard for plastic model kits. Each model since then has seen incremental improvements. Just when you think the series can’t get any better, Tamiya goes and proves you wrong. Their 1:32 scale Birdcage Corsair was released in mid-2013. This was an outstanding kit in every respect. Tamiya expanded their 1:32 scale Corsair family with an F4U-1A in late 2014. This kit included several new sprues and offered a wider range of camouflage and marking possibilities. Tamiya has now completed the -1 trio with their new 1:32 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Once again, this kit includes a significant number of brand new sprues to depict the unique attributes of this variant. We can also marvel at the kit’s subtle surface textures, high level of detail, clever parts breakdown and accuracy. In this new book, we provide an exhaustive step-by-step illustrated guide to building and detailing the 1:32 scale F4U-1D and F4U-1A, offering plenty of inspiration with two different configurations and colour schemes. We have also a bonus Chapter on building Tamiya’s 1:48 scale Corsair family, offer some tips for painting pilot figures and include a helpful walk around of a Corsair under restoration.

A diorama scene for Tamiya’s new 1:35 Goliath vehicle set?

A CLOSE-UP LOOK AT THE GOLIATH

W

ith the release of Tamiya’s new 1:35 Goliath vehicle set, what could be better than a wartime photo of the machines, captured by US GIs and being examined by specialists from the 5th and 6th Engineer Special Brigade (ESB). Of note in this WW2 US

Signal Corps photo is the open cable compartment. The wire unravelled as the vehicle moved forwards, and was connected to the operator’s control box. The Goliaths we see here are the electric-powered versions; there was also a larger design that was propelled by a small gasoline engine. Tamiya’s kit does a great

job of capturing the detail in miniature; we’ll be building it soon for review in TMMI. ●
