A brief look at kits that have recently arrived at TMMI HQ!

RYE FIELD MODEL, CHINA 1:35 TIGER I PZ.KPFW.VI AUSF.E MIDDLE PRODUCTION FULL INTERIOR ITEM NO.RM-5010 • www.hannants.co.uk Rye Field Model’s new Tiger I kits are magnificent productions and with a full interior, they represent many weeks of potential modelling enjoyment. The latest to arrive is the Mid Production version which features rubber-tyred road wheels. The model will need the application of zimmerit but this can be quite a satisfying challenge. MN

BRONCO MODELS, HONG KONG 1:35 GERMAN RHEINMETALL RHEINTOCHTER ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILES (R-2) AND LAUNCHER ITEM NO; CB35048 • www.hannants.co.uk Bronco’s second release of a WW2 German battlefield missile depicts the ferocious-looking ‘Rheintochter’ missile, which was designed as an anti-aircraft weapon. The unusual shape of the missile is well replicated and the modeller can go to town replicating the wood grain of its wooden wings. MN

REVELL, EUROPE 1:35 SD.KFZ.251/1 AUSF.B ‘STUKA ZU FUß’ ITEM NO.03248 • www.revell.de/en In the box here we have Zvezda’s Sd.Kfz.251/1 ausf.B with Wurfrahmen 40 rocket launchers mounted along its flanks. The kit is basically excellent, with thinly-moulded crew compartment walls, very nicely detailed individual, multi-part tracks and well-formed launcher frames. With some careful assembly, this will build into a very interesting-looking model. MN

ICM, UKRAINE 1:35 MODEL T 1917 AMBULANCE ITEM NO;35452 • www.hannants.co.uk The Model T Ford in ambulance form makes an extremely attractive model subject and ICM have done a very nice job of it here. The kit comes with a detailed ambulance body that includes a stretcher and wood-slat internal seating. Full of character and detail. MN

ITALERI, ITALY 1:72 RB-66B DESTROYER ITEM NO.1375 • www.hobbyco.net Italeri initially released this kit in 1986 and even back then, it came with recessed panel lines, access hatches and more. The model features a very decent cockpit which is quite visible thanks to the large canopy. Markings are provided for three overall metal and one camouflaged machine, all circa 1960s. MN

TAMIYA, JAPAN 1:48 HAYATE & KUROGANE SCENERY SET ITEM NO.61116 • www.hobbyco.net In this new release, Tamiya’s 1972 Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate kit has been combined with the 2008 Kurogane staff car, a moulded display base and sheet of grass flocking to create this neat diorama set. Naturally, the new Ki-61 would fit work here too. MN

BRONCO MODELS, HONG KONG 1:35 STURMGESCHÜTZ III AUSF.E SD.KFZ.142/1 ITEM NO; CB35119 • www.hannants.co.uk The Ausf.E is the latest variant of Bronco’s new StuG.III series to arrive at TMMI, depicting the extended superstructure and side armour improvements over the previous versions. The kit comes with individual (glueable) tracks, photo-etched grilles and more, plus braided copper wire. MN

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 MESSERSCHMITT BF109F-4 ITEM NO.82114 www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk You can see the full-build article of this magnificent kit starting overleaf, and here it is ‘in the box’. Six markings options are provided as standard in this ProfiPACK Edition, including the sand/blue machine of Hans-Joachim Marseille. A fantastic kit with eye-watering detail. MN

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 F6F-5N HELLCAT NIGHTFIGHTER ITEM NO.84133 • www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk One might think of the Hellcat as a small, single-seat fighter but place the model alongside a Bf109 and you realise it’s actually huge! This nightfighter variant comes with a cast resin radar pod, plus appropriate markings. One of Eduard’s best, even in humble ‘Weekend Edition’ form. MN

ICM, UKRAINE 1:72 FW189A-1 RECONNAISSANCE ITEM NO.72291 • www.hannants.co.uk ICM have created a gorgeous little kit of the Uhu here, and the subject works very well indeed in the smaller scale. That huge canopy is moulded in sensible ‘chunks’; an Eduard masking set will be a massive help here. Superb detail throughout. MN

BRONCO MODELS, HONG KONG 1:72 DFS 230B-1 LIGHT ASSAULT GLIDER ITEM NO; GB7008 • www.hannants.co.uk Bronco have created a superb kit of the WW2 German Luftwaffe’s assault glider here, complete with internal tubularframe structure, seating (with PE seat-backs and frames), posable flaps plus a superb stressed-skin effect over the wings. Luftwaffe and Romanian markings. MN

REVELL, EUROPE 1:144 ALBATROS CLASS 143 ITEM NO.05148 • www.revell.de/en The mouldings here date back to the mid-1990s but they are pin-sharp and stuffed with detail. The 143 class is a handsome boat and is bristling with weaponry; always good on a model kit. All we need now is an Eduard set for the railings. MN

ITALERI, ITALY 1:24 VW 1303S BEETLE CABRIOLET ITEM NO.3709 • www.hobbyco.net Italeri’s Beetle Cab started life in the 1970s under the Imai label and it’s still a fun model, with certain era-related caveats. The interior detail is a little clunky but the bodyshell proportions (and detail) look spot-on and it will build into a very cool veedub. MN

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 X-1 MACH BUSTER PROFIPACK ITEM NO.8079 • www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk The Bell X-1 is an icon of aviation and Eduard’s 1:48 kit is an appealing replica. The kit comes with a well appointed cockpit and in this edition, a two-part, pre-coloured photo-etched instrument panel too. Weighted resin tyres/wheels finish off the job perfectly. MN

REVELL, EUROPE 1:24 VW BEETLE POLICE ITEM NO.07035 • www.revell.de/en Revell’s new VW Beetle has been issued in ‘Polizei’ form here, with added parts, such as a roof-top blue light and wingmounted siren to create the police version. Great detail inside and out, including a full engine and detailed cabin. MN

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC 1:48 FW190F-8 ITEM NO.70119 • www.eduard.com • www.creativemodels.co.uk The ‘F-8 variant of Eduard’s delicious little Fw190 comes with five markings-options, each painted in striking camouflage, including a winter scheme, Hungary 1944, a sand/green mottle in Italy, 1944 plus three more conventional schemes. Underwing rockets feature in this release. MN TMMI 257 March 2017

FULL-BUILD: MILITARY AIRCRAFT EDUARD 1:48 MESSERSCHMITT BF109F-4 ● KIT NO.82114

A FINE FRIEDRICH IN 'FORTY-EIGHTH! The Bf109F-4 is a sleek and good-looking variant of the iconic fighter. Jan Abrahamsson describes the construction and painting of Eduard’s new 1:48 kit

F

or many of us, the Bf109F-4 is the most beautiful of all the Messerschmitt '109 variants. Its sleek lines and clean profile do indeed make it look more attractive than aircraft in the E, G or K-series. As is so often the case, a beautiful aircraft also tends to be a very good one. When the F-series started operating in the skies over Europe it quickly became clear to Allied air crews that this '109 variant was a high performing adversary. Having just finished a few of the wonderful Eduard Bf109G-6 kits, I recently received my first new Eduard Bf109F-4. I was eager to see if they had been able to capture the beauty of the F-4 and if they had been able to create a kit that would be a is good as their earlier G-series.

EDUARD'S NEW KIT

In the box we are treated to the now familiar crisp Bf109 contents; a number of dark grey and clear plastic sprues, a fairly comprehensive set of photo-etch, painting masks and a set of nice decals. The overall quality of the parts is very high. There are subtle but crisp rivets as well as sharply defined panel lines. The dimensions of the kit compared to scale drawings seem to be spot on and the breakdown of the kit is logical and enables a very quick and effortless build. We are given markings for aircraft operating in France, Finland, Libya and Russia during 1941 and 1942.

CHOOSING A DESERT VETERAN Browsing through various colour photographs of

Bf109F-4s, I decided to portray the machine of Leutnant Sinner, based in Libya 1942. I found that the colours of Sinner's machine were more faded, worn and weathered than other F-4s, making it a more attractive and challenging model subject. Leutnant Sinner joined the Luftwaffe in 1940 and started his career with JG27 going to North Africa. In the desert he was able to shoot down thirty British aircraft, mostly Hurricanes, Spitfires and a few P-40s. Later in the war he flew the Me262, shooting down four American bombers. He survived the war with a total of thirty-nine victories.

Eduard provides us with very nice box art for their latest Bf109 kit.

Excellent instructions, nice decals, good photo-etch and paint masks give us a comprehensive package for the ‘109F-4

Eduard has captured the subtle differences between an F series and G series instrument panel. Can you spot the difference?

THE COCKPIT

Just as with the cockpits in the earlier '109G-series kits, this cockpit comes together

Please note, we have obscured the swastika emblems on this model to comply with regulations in certain countries where Tamiya Model Magazine is sold Eduard has produced a highly detailed and accurate representation of the ‘109F-4

in a matter of minutes. All the relevant parts are there, detailing is good and the photo-etch parts improves the realism even further. There are small and subtle differences between a cockpit in the F-series and one in the G-series and Eduard has been able to capture these, even on the instrument panel. Quite impressive. Painting started by using Mr. Surfacer 1500 as a primer, followed by Gunze RLM 66 Dark Grey. I gradually lightened the grey colour with Gunze white, picking up the highlights. Some areas were then drybrushed with Humbrol metallic paints to show a fairly worn and well lived-in cockpit. Several washes with dark brown and black oil colour made sure the detail would stand out even more. Various shades of light coloured pigments were also applied to add dust and further fading of the paint.

tones. I normally pre-shade not only the panel lines and areas for shadow, but also whole panel sections to give structure based colour variations. I started out by using a dark grey spraying the rivet and panel lines taking care to be rather precise. I then I used a whole range of greys, white and black paint on panel sections to break up the surface even more. Once the whole model was prepared like this, I went back and adjusted the tonality and improved the overall balance, adding contrast as needed, often exaggerating this, to have contrast to work with in the later stages of painting.

Setting the cockpit aside I went straight onto the next steps in construction, being able to put most of the kit together in a matter of hours. Just as with the Bf109G kits the build was a real pleasure and quite fun also. One of the areas that Eduard does particularly well is the wheel wells. The canvas coverings look realistic and the zip lines are well defined so you can see them clearly. The only modification I did to the kit was to add the brake lines to the undercarriage, using thin copper wire and Tamiya tape. I then cleaned the whole kit with alcohol based thinner to remove all grease and dirt. The model was then primed with Tamiya Medium Grey to create a light and neutral base for the rest of the painting.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION

THE LIGHT DESERT SAND

To recreate the dirty and faded look of Leutnant Sinner's desert aircraft I first wanted to create an effective colour foundation for the effects to come. To create such a foundation, I work with different pre-shading techniques. I find that this enables me to build up paint effects very subtly, creating depth and variation to the colour

Cockpit and interior were painted in Gunze RLM02 and Gunze RLM66 for the base colours

A FADED DESERT BLUE

Moving on to the base colours, I needed to find a colour mix for the blue RLM78 that would match Sinner's aircraft. The RLM78 in its factory fresh state has a quite strong blue tone, much stronger in colour than the pale RLM76 used in the European theatres. However, the RLM 78 colour also tended to fade to a more grey-blue colour after longer periods of service in desert environments. To recreate such a faded RLM78 I mixed Gunze RLM76, RLM78 and white, in about equal parts. This resulted in a suitably toned down blue-grey colour. I sprayed the undersides and the sides in four to five very thin layers, carefully building up tonal variation to make the pre-shading show through. It is important to keep things subtle here, and not create too much contrast. For this veteran desert aircraft, I decided to let the pre-shading show through more than usual, giving more depth to the colours.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

The cockpit is well detailed and can be built in a matter of minutes

Moving on to the upper surfaces, I wanted to mix a RLM79 tone that would also show a heavily weathered and faded tone to match the aircraft. The German RLM79 could vary from light sandy brown tones to much darker brown. Using several colour profiles of Sinner's aircraft as inspiration, I experimented with different paint mixes. I finally settled

Details in the cockpit were painted using Vallejo acrylics and Humbrol Metallic

Dark brown oils were used for several thin washes and filters in the cockpit

Tamiya XF-55 Deck Tan was sprayed in light layers to simulate accumulated dust in the cockpit

The details were mounted separately to enable easy painting and weathering

V Careful pre-shading was applied using several shades of black, white and grey to lay the foundation for a well-worn paint finish

The model was primed using Tamiya Medium Grey, then polished using fine grade sanding pads

The Luftwaffe Yellow was mixed using Tamiya paints and applied with tape protecting the surrounding areas

Using Tamiya tape as masking a very light RLM79 Desert Yellow was sprayed on, taking care to let the pre-shading show through

A faded grey-blue RLM78 was sprayed on in several thin layers

V for mixing Mr Hobby RLM79

with Tamiya XF-55 Deck Tan, XF-57 Buff and lots of Gunze White. I then laid on this rather light RLM79 gradually building up the desired effect in several layers, making sure that the pre-shading shows through just enough to be visible. It is important to strive for an irregular effect over the airframe. I then went back and post-shaded several areas with lighter and darker tones of the base paint.

DECALS

To prepare for the decals and the weathering I coated the model in two thin layers of Gunze Clear, allowing at least 24-36 hours of drying time between each layer. For Leutnant Sinner's aircraft I used the decals from the Kagero book on Bf109s in North Africa – a very useful set. These decals went on smoothly, but they do require your full attention, as they are very thin and will wrinkle quickly if you are not careful. Several layers of MicroSet got them to settle nicely.

DESERT WEATHERING

As a first step I covered the model in a few thin filters of sepia oil paint. This ties all the different paint effects together and gives additional depth. Once the filters were dry, I used a fine tipped brush to paint all the panel lines and rivets in different shades of grey and dark brown oil paint. This paint was then blended out using a small, flat brush dipped in thinner. I kept these colours light and subtle to avoid a stark and unrealistic effect. Once this had dried, I went back and placed darker washes in selected panel lines. To fade the paint further I then used very thin Gunze white to spray the whole model in a random way. This is a risky moment, because any 'over fading' cannot be undone – you need to work in irregular patterns and slowly build the effect. This is especially important for the decals, as they are far too stark in tone, and must be carefully

blended into the rest of the paint job. Chipping and damage to the paint was then done using Vallejo acrylics and small pieces of sponge. I used both lighter and darker tones of the base colours to suggest lighter and deeper chipping across the fuselage. The lower surfaces were sprayed with Tamiya XF-57 Buff, XF-55 Deck Tan as

well as XF-60 Dark Yellow to simulate dirt and dust accumulated by operating in a desert environment. To create an effect of paint distressed by the harsh desert environment, I then used an old (very worn) polishing stick to sand down the paint in a random fashion across the fuselage. This sanding will change the colour tones, blend

Once all the base colours were in place very thin Gunze white was sprayed in random patterns to fade the colours further

The decals needed careful attention to be applied using Micro Sol and Micro Set on top of a layer of Gunze Clear lacquer. They were then faded with Gunze White to better match the overall weathered surfaces

The propeller was chipped by using Alclad Aluminium, AK Worn Effects and Dark Green RLM70. The chipping effects were then dusted and toned down by spraying them with very thin Tamiya Medium Grey

Several shades of dark grey and brown oil paint were painted into all rivets and panel lines. After a few minutes most of this paint was blended into the base colours using a flat wide brush

The paint on the model was then carefully sanded down in order to create random worn and chipped effects

These days, Alclad II don’t just make metallic shades, they also offer ‘solid’ colour paints for aircraft camouflage and more. One of the newest sets to reach TMMI contains the three colours used by the US Navy on their carrier aircraft. In the pack are three 30ml bottles; Matt White, Non-Specular Sea Blue and Intermediate Blue. The paints are enamels in a ‘hot’ solvent, so will need to be sprayed over a primer layer.

Light coloured chipping was applied over the airframe using Vallejo paint on a small sponge to build up the worn effects further

Several shades of Tamiya Buff, Tan and Dark Yellow were used on the undersides to simulate dust and dirt thrown up during landing and take-off

To create further fading and dust effects MIG Pigments were painted on in random patterns

The canopy was glued in place using the excellent white glue from Pacer

V them together and also

give interesting chipping and depth effects that are very hard to achieve with an airbrush. I then go back with the airbrush and use very light colours of the base shade to blend the effects even further. This process was repeated several times, creating up to five or six different layers of paint leading to the final effect. This process of sanding the paint job requires that you have a solid layer of Gunze Clear protecting the base paint – or you run the risk of exposing the grey plastic below!

THE DETAILS

The propeller was first primed with Alclad II Black, then covered in Dark Aluminium. Over this I sprayed a thin layer of 'Chipping Fluid' (AK Interactive) and on top of this several shades of the black-green RLM70. Once dry, I chipped the propeller quite heavily. The aluminium chips were then toned down by spraying them with lighter tones of Tamiya Medium Grey and RLM70. As a final step the whole model was coated in Vallejos Flat Varnish. Only two light coats were needed to tie all that paint work together and get a nice flat end result.

THE VERDICT

Eduard has been able to capture the beauty of the Bf109F-4 very well. It is also a great kit to build and paint. The logical breakdown of parts, the quality of the plastic, general details

and the surface detailing all makes for a very nice modelling experience for both beginners and more experienced modellers. Once finished, it is quite satisfying to contemplate the sweeping but purposeful lines of this great fighter aircraft in 1:48. I certainly got the urge to build many more! We also have the Bf109F in Eduard's 'Royal Class' box, an essential gift to ourselves as Messerschmitt collectors! I also want to thank my friend Toni Canfora of Canfora Publishing for kindly supporting me with the final photography of the finished model. ●

s well as their much-loved range of modelling paints, Mr Hobby of Japan also offer a line of airbrushes with which to apply to apply them and we have been given a opportunity to look at one of their most popular models. The 'Mr Procon Boy PS270' reviewed here is a highly spec'd instrument; it's a double-action design (a big help for those who like to use their airbrushes creatively and for ultra-fine work) and it also comes with a built-in air control valve, which allows the user to adjust the airflow with extreme precision. The basic design of airbrushes hasn't changed in decades but this latter feature, popularised by Iwata, is a revelation and permits the spraying of very highly diluted paint mixtures at very low pressures for the creation of the subtlest of surface effects. Top marks to Mr Hobby for including this feature, which should be standard on all enthusiasts' airbrushes in my opinion. As the name suggests, a 0.2mm tip is standard and is the ideal size for scale modelling applications. The tip is protected by a castellated crown which can be unscrewed if desired, for the closest of close-up work. The fixed paint cup is generous at 10cc and although it doesn't come with a cap, it's no great loss as I find they are more trouble than they are worth. I have caused more splashes when trying to prise off a recalcitrant friction-fit cap to check the paint level than working without it. Just fill the cup no more than one third at a time and you'll be fine without a lid. Manufacturing tolerances are very high and the device feels balanced and comfortable in the hand; its central paint cup is perfect for both left and right-handed users. I'll be testing this airbrush on my next model (Tamiya's 1:24 Honda NSX) which you'll be able to see in TMMI, so you can judge the results. So far, highly recommended.

A WEATHERING PHILOSOPHY Anis El Bied explains his methods and rationale for painting and weathering a fighter aircraft, in this case a well known Würger in 1945...

F

or me, there is always an idea – sometimes peculiar – behind a model build. I had been interested in this particular subject for years, in fact since the eighties I have keenly studied a book – Docavia No.15 – that featured a particular aircraft; the Focke-Wulf Fw190A-8/R2 'White 11' of Gefreiter Walter Wagner, 5/JG4. Three invaluable colour photos illustrate this machine, which was captured intact by the Americans in St-Trond (Belgium) during Operation

Bodenplatte, launched at dawn on 1st January 1945. The extraordinary colour images of this mythical and rare subject really captured my imagination and I just had to build it. After the 'nth re-opening of the Fw190A-8/R2's kit box in November 2015, I decided to get on with it and assemble the model as soon as possible. Being a Tamiya kit, the mouldings are precise and fit well, lending itself to a fast build and allowing me to focus on the things I really enjoy; painting and weathering.

As an extrapolation of the original A-8, this up-armoured version comes with self-adhesive 'stickers' for the appliqué armour that was fixed either side of the cockpit. These were used as templates to make more crisply defined panels from thin plastic card. To create additional detail on the airframe, I chose to apply rows of rivets – largely freehand – to bring it as close as possible to the standard of the most recent Eduard models. The result is far from optimal, although the worn and

V dirty camouflage of this

particular bird makes it possible to hide quite a few approximations. Finally, for our Luftwaffe readers, this Fw190A-8/R-2 actually made a forced landing during the attack of the Allied aerodromes and was then reconditioned with a cannibalized cowling from another Fw190, before being repainted (damn...) in brick red and receiving the code 'L-00' in black on its flanks. Consequently, the photos consulted (taken at different periods between January and March 1945) show it logically disarmed, a configuration not reproduced here, in order to try to capture the bird in its operational state.

Work began with the addition of the add-on armour panels to the outside of the cockpit area. 0.6mm plastic card was used for this, fixed in place with liquid cement

Lines of rivets were formed using the tip of a compass point, following lines of masking tape. This method makes it easier to add a riveted to uneven areas

The wings were treated with a Trumpeter riveting wheel, following a detailed plan

It is helpful to draw out the lines to be riveted with a felt-tipped pen to act as a guide

IN THE BOX

The creation of the patination that I conceived here is a matter of expressing the cumulative effects of weathering, aimed at a harmonious result whose colours are in sympathy with each other. The observation of photos of real aircraft or simply a box art by a talented painter can provide inspiration to paint a model with innovative methods without the effect becoming clichéd. Compliance with the correct colours is important to start with and here I used Mr Hobby RLM74/75/76

(www.albionhobbies.co.uk) for this Fw190. But one must remain flexible and adapt to the progress of the work, which is anything but systematic, so slight variations of colour are perfectly acceptable. By personal choice, I never follow the standard methods of 'pre-shading, painting, lightening, gloss varnish, decals, matt varnish'. Painting goes from step A to

The wing crosses were stencilled. The emblems were cut from a low-tack transparent film, working off the markings sheet in the instructions

The black band with the white identification bars were stencil-applied. The necessary adjustments were made with Tamiya tape

22

March 2017 TMMI 257

The Tamiya cockpit needs a little refinement, as the seat harness is not included with the kit. A coat of RLM66 was applied, then drybrushed to highlight the detail

U

This way of painting by sub-assemblies allows the airbrush to reach into the wing roots to apply the RLM 74/75 camouflage accurately

The fuselage crosses were also stencilled on. The white was applied in light coats

The white ‘11’ required some extra attention. A stencil was used for the white, then precise cutting of the mask made it possible to apply the black. Corrections were made with a fine brush, whilst holding the breath..

31/01/2017 12:05

Here, we can see some very diluted coats of sand have been applied, as well as the red primer over the exposed bolts of the protective armour plates. Note the slight glossy finish, obtained by rubbing the surfaces with a soft cloth

The undersides, during weathering. Sand-coloured hues were applied in the areas most exposed to the environment. Note the red primer on some inspection panels; not confirmed by documentation, but within the realm of the plausible

Some sources mention the remnants of the yellow painted panel on the cowling's undersurface. To create a more spectacular finish for this project, a brighter yellow shade was used

This view of the underside allows us to see the riveting, which remains to be enhanced with colour-washes and other effects

Mini Review... LIFECOLOR US OLIVE DRAB CAMOUFLAGE SET ITEM no.CS11 www.airbrushes.com

Lifecolor acrylic paints may require a little experimentation and practice to get used to, but once you have got the knack (it doesn’t take long) they airbrush beautifully and offer some superb finishes. Their new set for US olive drab provides six shades of the colour for varying degrees of fade on tanks, trucks, equipment and even certain aircraft. They dry with a light satin sheen and can be thinned with Tamiya X20A acrylic thinner.

V step B, then returns to step

A, jumps to C then back for a retouch. Once the basic shades were on, I left the model overnight, returning to it with fresh eyes. Obviously, fundamental principles must always be respected, such as perfect paint dilution, finely applied layers, clean tools. But, also for me, successive colour-washes and 'filters', varying the tones according to the areas being treated. A completely matt finish for combat aircraft, can be rather dull and unrealistic; it looks much more interesting and authentic to replicate an airframe polished by maintenance crews during cleaning, or simply covered with fluids. Weathering powders, felt pens, pencils, mixtures made with oils and acrylics and much more can be used to create a tonally varied and visually engaging finish. If something is to be remembered from each model we make, it is the uniqueness of each experience accumulated over a few weeks of work and the progression that it brings to better prepare us for the apprehension of the following model, regardless of the age and level of the model maker. ●

Even if decals for the subject exist, the author chose to paint the insignia of JG4 by hand. The helm and its plume must be perfectly centred on the white escutcheon. It was theoretically grey and, it seems, surrounded by red

Additional light applications of sand-coloured paint were made, emphasising that the aircraft operated from rough airstrips

The belly is practically complete. The patina of this Würger was created using various techniques borrowed from drawing, including watercolour pencils

General views of the fully built model. Note the spare tracks used as the additional armour. It was common to use different track links to cover weak points of Allied tanks. Here, the author used some Cromwell tracks along with Tiger I links. Eureka XXL provides perfect tow cables which are very flexible and easy to set in realistic position on the model. T

he Polish 1st Armoured Division was the most famous Polish unit in Second World War history. It was created in February 1942 at Duns in Scotland under Major General Stanisław Maczek's command. The division started its battle route in Normandy and finished in Wilhelmshaven, mainly fighting as part of the First Canadian Army. Until 1947 they were located in north-west Germany but in June that year the division was demobilised. In recent months I have focused on modern subjects but after some gaming in 'World of Tanks' where I have the Cromwell in my garage, I turned my eyes to this vehicle in 1:35. It was obvious for me that the model should represent a Polish vehicle but I needed a unique idea to execute it. I decided to create dynamic scene with a speeding tank and some German troops fleeing off the road. I can say that this small vignette is my tribute to those Polish soldiers who fought in

those days of the war. After the battle of the Falaise Pocket, Canadians troops commented “bloody Poles, what a job!” These words of appreciation were the most important reason for me to build this Polish Black Devil's Cromwell. As the history of the Cromwell tank is well known, I will focus on the building and painting stages mostly. Tamiya's kit is the best on the market, and to enrich it I completed some aftermarket parts: Friulmodel tracks, Eureka XXL towing cables, PanzerArt spare wheels plus RB Model gun barrels and antenna mounts. Some scratchbuilding was needed to be added if we want to bring the kit to the higher level. This was done using mostly old PE sets, plus some wire was used to replace the moulded grab-handles but I also added dozens of plastic bolts to the kit and tracks. It was quite frustrating and time-consuming but with RP Toolz punch and die set, the work was much easier than was expected.

THE MODEL V PAINTING Next, I starting the painting

procedures. I took my Tamiya paints and following the instructions, I prepared the mix in the suggested proportions. As always with my models, the base colour was highlighted by adding couple drops of yellow to the base shade. Small elements were lightened also, but for this I used fine paint brush. The markings were created with stencils plus some standard decals from in the box. In addition I had some special markings for the Polish version of Cromwell (thank you Tomasz!). The weathering stages were accomplished quickly using materials from the 'Wilder' range (www. airbrushes.com). The washes and filters created a lot of tonal diversity on all areas of the model and I decided to add some further surface effects with oil paints. The paint 'chipping' work was achieved with the 'sponge' technique, dabbing on paint with a torn piece of sponge to form

28

natural looking paint abrasion and flaking effects. For the final application of weathering pigments, I also used Wilder's products with final touches of oil paints. The stowage items were collected from wide range of

The author spent a couple hours completing the engine deck, but ultimately it proved unnecessary because stowage covered all the work

manufacturers, mainly resin with some cardboard boxes, ropes and chain. Lastly, I prepared the hessian camouflage net with a piece of bandage, some sheets of yellow note paper and super glue. This proved

to be a time-consuming job but the result looked good to me. Once complete, it was easy to form the paper strips to a convincing shape and create the effect of wind blowing through them as the tank rushes forwards.

Two primers were used; grey for the hull and turret and black for the wheels (it will be easier to paint them when they are dark)

I mixed the colours seen here in proportions suggested in the instructions. It was easy and quite fast to cover the kit with correct shade

Using a Quick Wheels mask I painted the wheels, with no need for corrections. The rubber rims were hand painted with Lifecolor Tyre Black

The highlights were airbrushed with the mix of base colour plus a couple drops of yellow

Note the different shades of green on small areas of the body, and the painted tools and fire extinguishers

The white stars were sprayed with stencils and the author allowed for some under-spray so they’d be a bit blurry. This is more realistic than the sharp edges of decals

The rest of the markings were cut from the set provided by Tamiya some special Polish unit signs were also applied. All of them were treated with Microscale decal setting solution. After they had dried, they were covered with a coat of clear varnish

The first step of the weathering process was the application of a colour-wash on all surfaces using heavily thinned black enamel paint. Note the gloss surface, which helps this process

The author created more tones of green, so localised ‘filters’ (tinted colour-washes) were applied in selected areas

Even though the ‘filters’ did a good job, the author also applied extra tonal variations with oil paints, building up lighter and darker shades on all the panels of the tank

All weathering work so was ‘saved’ with a coat of flat clear varnish

Now it was time to add some surface ‘damage’ effects, so the author used a piece of sponge and applied small paint ‘chips’ and scratches. Here and there, a brush was used too

V

Because the author didn't have any burnishing liquid, the tracks were painted dark brown and weathered with Wilder's surface treatments and pigments. To 'polish' the track treads, a graphite stick (available from art supply stores) was used

As working vehicles always exhibit some oil stains, the author tried to replicate the effect with oil paint diluted with white spirit. Note the single, old style wheel

The same products used on the tracks were used to build up the soil remains on the hull and wheels

Moving back to the top of the model, the author applied a pinch of pigments here, plus oil and murky water stains

Almost the last work on this kit was the preparation of the camouflage netting. First, the author formed the base from bandage, gluing it around the turret and then small stripes of paper were glued and formed with super glue. The netting and strips were painted with Vallejo Acrylics, toned down with colour washes and finally drybrushed with light grey oil paint

The escaping soldiers come from the MasterBox set (German Signals Personnel) but I changed the heads for resin ones, along with some elements of equipment which come from Dragon. The uniform insignia are from Archer Fine Transfers. So, by adding aftermarket detail sets and some creatively posed camouflage netting, Tamiya's Cromwell comes to life in this high-speed chase scene! â—?

D

uring the Second World War, the US Army tested and fielded several types of tank destroyer, with varying degrees of success. After the losses suffered in the North African, Sicilian and Italian campaigns, it was realised that the M10, with its 76mm gun, was no better armed than the newest versions of the M4 Sherman tanks it was designed to protect. And the M10 had much thinner armour protection than the Sherman tanks, with no better cross-country performance. One 'must have' design feature that

was desperately needed was a more powerful gun to deal with the newest German tank designs, such as the Panther and Tiger tanks, at all typical combat ranges; roughly 1000 metres. A new anti-tank weapon was being developed in the US, a 90mm high velocity rifled gun (which also eventually found its way into the turret of the M26 Pershing Heavy Tank), which would be able to defeat the thickest armour plate on the German heavy tanks. This gun was mounted in an all-new turret design, with an open top and

A series of holes was drilled, just inside the perimeter of the deck plates that will be removed

a large bustle which could hold the large ammunition for the gun. Initially, this turret/gun combination was mounted to the hull of the M4A3 Sherman, but later was mounted on the M10A1 hull, providing a spacious interior, with a lower silhouette to present to enemy gunners. This tank destroyer was named the M36 'Jackson' 90mm tank destroyer, named for the famous Confederate general, Stonewall Jackson, from the US Civil War. This vehicle was the last design to use the M10 hull, but the M36

Using a new blade in my hobby knife, I joined all the holes, removing the plate easily

was powered by a gasoline engine, requiring a different engine deck layout. This vehicle was a huge success on the battlefield, with a gun that could destroy any enemy tank at all typical combat ranges. This success rate made the M36 a vehicle that was always in very high demand. In fact, the design proved so successful that the M36 saw considerable post-war use by many nations, such as South Korea, France, Iran, Turkey, and some even saw combat in the former Yugoslavia into the 1990s.

U

After adding a few styrene shims and a little bit of filler, the result was perfect

Using styrene strips, I also closed in the open sponson undersides, a flaw common to most Tamiya Sherman-based kits Many period photos show the front fenders of M36 Jacksons cut away like this, I assume its for ease of maintenance, or to clear mud and debris more easily. In either case, I decided to cut my kit’s fenders in the same manner

The boltheads that are missing from the Tamiya bogie trucks were added

Here is the Gaso.Line resin hull rear bulkhead. I also used the exhaust outlets from the HB Sherman kit

The basic hull is beginning to take shape

I added half of a 55 gallon fuel drum to both hide the screw attachment point inside the hull and to suggest a transmission housing that will be seen through the open hatches

More bits of scrap plastic were added inside the hull to suggest the major interior structures of the drive train

Here is the hull rear plate, completed using the Gaso.Line resin replacement, along with the Tamiya tools and the Hauler etched light guards

All the missing details, such as the grab handles and bolt heads have been added to the new engine deck

The hull hatches were detailed using the Hauler etch, along with some lead foil and some missing bolt heads were added

Any 1:48 model with Sherman headlamps will need the Hauler etched guards. They are beautiful, and really add lots of detail to the kit

In my Gaso.Line set, the turret was badly damaged. Not only was my turret damaged, but Gaso.Line moulded it as a solid piece. The turret basket was not solidly attached like they show. So I decided to scratchbuild the entire turret basket

The rest of the turret interior details were now added

34

Once completed, the scratch built basket looked much more accurate

The gun mantlet was detailed with tie-down loops made from copper wire. Styrene strip and rod was used to detail the turret roof stowage

V THE CONVERSION PROJECT

For my model, I decided to attempt a kit bash using a conversion I found from Gaso.Line in France to make the Tamiya 1:48 M10 into the M36. The set included a whole new turret, with an interior, along with the replacement parts for the hull rear. I knew I’d also want to do a few upgrades to the kit as well, since I’ve built the Tamiya M10 before. In this area, I purchased the Hauler photo-etched detail set for the M10 and I also purchased the RB Models 90mm turned aluminium gun intended for the M26 Pershing kit. I also obtained the RB set for the Tamiya .50cal heavy machine gun, as it is gorgeously detailed. I also decided to ‘liberate’ a few parts from a HobbyBoss M4A3 kit that was languishing on my shelf, namely the engine deck and the road wheels. These parts would be necessary for the M36, as the road wheels are very well detailed in the HB kit, the M36 had the gasoline engine and the Tamiya M10 has the deck for the diesel powered machines, which were very different. Once all the parts I needed were gathered, the build could begin. I hope that the following photographic essay will show how I did this conversion, as the proverb says; 'A picture is worth a thousand words'. The build was not especially difficult, well within the capabilities of any modeller with basic modelling skills. Follow along, and I’ll illustrate how to get an accurate M36 Jackson big cat killer in 1:48. ●

I used an aluminium turned 90mm gun tube made by RB Models. This was intended for the Tamiya M26 Pershing kit, but it will work here too

Here is more of the turret roof stowage. The roof had several irregularities that needed to be filled and sanded smooth

I used parts from both the resin set along with the Tamiya parts to make the 90mm gun breech

Test fitting ensured it fit perfectly into the turret

The etched grouser racks provided in the Hauler etched set are lovely, much more detailed than the kit’s moulded styrene parts. The M36 carried spare track pads on the hull side, so I used the parts from the HB M4A3 kit, as none are provided in the Tamiya M10 kit

I had no choice but to scratchbuild the small rack that was used to stow the driver’s foul weather windscreen. Lead foil strip was used to make it, following reference pictures as a guide

The basic build of the hull is shown here complete

I also added the step loop at the hull front, along with some tie downs, taken again from the HB kit

TAMIYA 1:48 M10 KIT (NO.32582) CONVERTED TO M36 JACKSON

The gun breech could now be permanently installed into the turret Once the various bits of stowage were added to the turret, the build of the exterior is now complete. The model is ready to be painted and finished

The Hauler etch and the RB Models detail pieces really dress up the Tamiya .50 cal Browning. Both sets are a must

The various bits of external stowage were sourced from the spares box, with lots of strapping added from lead foil

This thin ‘filter’ (colour-wash) was applied over the entire model. This filter eliminates the 'frosted' look most acrylic flat coats leave behind, warming the colours to a more natural shade

To restore the model’s colour to a warmer shade, I prepared a filter using these two Winsor & Newton oil colours; #25 Lamp Black and #35 Raw Umber

A liberal splash of enamel thinner was applied. This mix should look like tinted thinner, rather than thinned paint

36

More and more washes were layered over the model and this, along with vertical lines of blended light and dark oil, will give a nice, weathered look. Adding contrast to a monotone colour is important

31/01/2017 12:10

Views of the completed stowage on the kit’s turret. Enamels and oils were used for the shading and weathering

Powdered graphite was rubbed over this stowed machine gun tripod to impart a bare metallic look. Powdered graphite always looks more realistic than paint

This same effect was used to give a metallic sheen to the .50cal machine gun on the turret roof

I used Mig’s #1409 Fuel Stain enamel weathering effects to get this spilled fuel look. It was randomly applied with a small, pointed brush

The rubber on the spare road wheels’ tyres was picked out with Humbrol enamel #67 Tank Grey. I never use black to paint rubber in scale; it is far too stark in colour

This aiming stake was added because it provides a nice splash of The rust on the tools was created using pigment powder, applied colour to the model, while still being very plausible as many period dry. Humbrol enamels did the rest. Lots of pigments were used to pictures showed AFVs carrying them in combat create the heavily dusted appearance of the hull rear

MISSION MODELS, USA

www.missionmodelsus.com You'll remember Mission Models from a few years back for their excellent modelling tools such as the Etchmate, Grabhandler, MultiTool and more. Well, now they are back and this time, their new product is paints. Acrylics to be specific, and extremely refined ones too. From our very quick and unscientific 'dip test' the paints appear to be extremely finely grained and densely pigmented which will mean excellent coverage when airbrushed. There's quite a large range already, with shades for WW2 German armour – the three ubiquitous tones of Olivegrun, Rotbraun and Dunkelgelb – plus a second, darker Dunkelgelb. Sandgrau, Red Oxide Primer, Gelbbraun, Grunbbraun and other RAL matched colours will be found in the range, plus no less than four varieties of US Army Olive Drab with differing degrees of fade. The bottles are marked with an airbrush symbol, suggesting that they are for spraying only, but from our test, it appears that they could be brushpainted too, but this will need further experimentation to confirm. We'll be testing these exciting new paints over the coming months and we will tell you how they perform. MN

www.creativemodels.co.uk New in from AK Interactive are some very interesting materials for creating groundwork on dioramas, with the name 'Terrains'. In the range we have a light acrylic paste that replicates snow and much heavier mixtures for Asphalt, Sandy Desert and Dark Earth. Also new to this range is a material to replicate the cracked-up mud in a dry river bed, named Wet Crackle Effects'. If you're looking to replicate water, AK's Atlantic Blue Water Gel has great potential for seascapes; Still Water gel (liquid) will be good for puddles, slow-moving river water. One final material received is called 'Washable Agent' which is rather intriguing. The instructions suggest adding 10% of it to acrylic paint to make it wash-off-able, so effects such as whitewash camouflage, field-applied desert sand and other fragile finishes can be replicated. KIT PREVIEW TAMIYA 1:48 KAWASAKI KI-61-ID HIEN (TONY) ● KIT NO.61115

TMMI's Editor takes a peek into the box of Tamiya's new Ki-61 Hien 'Tony'

TAMIYA'S TERRIFIC TONY! T

amiya's Ki-61-Id Hien is a 100% new tool, using no parts from existing kits from other manufacturers. It depicts the long-nosed 'Id' version, which had a pair of domestically produced 20mm cannons in place of the imported Mausers, mounted in a nose that was extended by 20cm. The cowling guns were augmented by a pair of 12.7mm MGs in the wings. In this form, the Hien (Allied reporting name 'Tony') was a highly armed foe whose 20mm guns could rip apart an Allied airframe

44

in a dogfight. The kit parts come moulded on one small and two full-sized sprues of high-grade, grey polystyrene, plus another in crystal-clear, transparent plastic for the canopy. The latter features an open/closed option with alternative parts for each position; far better than trying to fit the sliding portion over the rear section when just one set of canopy parts is provided. There's another clear-moulded sprue in the box too, in the form of the entire left half of the fuselage. This will show

off the very nicely detailed cockpit, but there's little to see in the rear fuselage and the engine block – which is supplied – is a representational item with just a handful of ancillary details. The aforementioned cockpit builds up into a modular sub-assembly that can be popped up into the cemented fuselage halves, a more satisfactory approach than the traditional entrapment of the cockpit floor, bulkhead etc., as the halves are brought together. Within the cockpit module we find an instrument

panel with the dial bezels moulded in relief, onto which are placed decals that provide the instrument faces in groups. This is an effective approach and offers an easy way to create a convincing-looking panel with minimal effort. The breeches/bodies of the 20mm cannons are provided in the kit and they sit on a panel in front of the pilot, above the oil tank, which is also present. If you're using the opaque fuselage half, they'll be almost completely hidden, but they'll remain quite visible through the

clear part. The pilot's seat and rear bulkhead are well executed but the harnesses are provided in decal form and they can look a little 'painted on'. The strap transfers could be applied to lead or aluminium foil, trimmed out and applied, or a better still, install a set from Eduard's fantastic 'Seatbelts IJAAF WWII' set (49109) which are made from a thin, malleable steel and come pre-painted for a very convincing look. Tamiya have done an amazing job here; what initially appears to be

a modest 1:48 kit of a famous WW2 fighter is in fact a highly sophisticated miniature that incorporates very high levels of engineering and fine, retrained detail. Very highly recommended; full build article coming soon. â—? AVAILABILITY; Tamiya models and accessories are widely available from good model shops and online. DC-4 BALAIR/ICELAND AIRWAYS www.revell.de/en SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS KIT NUMBER; 04947 Revell’s new Douglas DC-4 Balair/Iceland Airways kit is first variant of the company’s C-54D Skymaster kit of 2015 and they have chosen two very attractive liveries for it. The postwar incarnation of Balair began in Basel, Switzerland in 1953 and flew a pair of DC-4s in the 1950s/60s, with an immediately identifiable Swiss cross on the red fin - very attractive in model form. The Iceland Airways option is based on a natural-metal airframe with a blue, white and red ribbon on the fuselage sides and is subtly attractive too. The kit parts are moulded in pure white polystyrene, a ‘colour’ that is less easy to work with than say, mid-grey, but all the fine detail is there, with four well rendered engines, new, civilianstyle cabin seating layout, an excellent cockpit with multi-part pilots’ seats, flight engineer’s station and comprehensive undercarriage. DAF XF105 MARITIME WITH 45 FT TRAILER www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT, WS ITEM NO;3920 A forty-five ‘inch’ trailer (as stated on the instructions’ first page) would be very dinky indeed, but apart from that tiny error, this is a fine kit of the popular DAF XF105 tractor/ trailer set. The chassis is largely moulded as a single unit which won’t appeal to everyone but it does allow the builder to tear ahead with construction. In the spirit of rationalisation, no engine is provided, with just a sump and some other representative items to fill the space. The cab is thus glued in place rather than fitted on working hinges. Don’t be put off by this design approach, the rest of the model is full represented, with air suspension, drive train, leaf springs and steering linkages represented, plus a detailed cabin interior. The trailer makes up much of the kit box’s weight and is as well depicted as the tractor unit. MN

Attractive liveries for this stunning kit which now features a conventional cabin seating

Huge, beautifully printed decal sheet and a well detailed exterior

White plastic can be a little ‘dazzling’ to work with under high-brightness model bench lighting

KRUZENSHTERN RUSSIAN FOUR-MASTED BARQUE www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:200 MATERIALS; IM, WS, WC ITEM NO; 9045 This recently issued kit represents a Russian sail-training ship named ‘Kruzenstern’ (which still exists) and is now used for training in the Baltic. Zvezda’s kit is modelled to 1:200, a large scale for ships, resulting in a hull of over twenty inches. Detail here is superb; the hull plates are subtly represented, as are the portholes. The sails are formed from injection-moulded plastic and are depicted in full sail; they look remarkably realistic and even feature vertical seams which give them the characteristic quilted effect. The deck sports a beautifully refined planking effect and most of the deck equipment is moulded individually which will greatly help the painting process. Some experience in building model ships will be helpful with this kit, but Zvezda’s engineering is very good these days and it should build up well. MN

B-52G STRATOFORTRESS GULF WAR 25TH ANNIVERSARY www.hobbyco.net SCALE; 1:72 MATERIALS; IM, WS ITEM NO; 1378 Italeri’s 1:72 ‘Buff’ started life in 1994 as an AMT/Ertl kit and the kit was ahead of its time, having mostly recessed panel lines across its airframe. It comes with a decent main cockpit too, with all the major structures represented, plus seats, control yokes and an instrument whose dials are represented by a decal. The fuselage is broken lengthways as usual and also in forward and rear halves; the union is very positive but some shaping/filling will be needed to hide the joint, but nothing beyond the usual modelling skills. With plenty of test-fitting, the airframe should come together quite quickly and attention can be turned to the weapons pylons and undercarriage, the latter needing careful alignment so all tyres touch the ground at the same time. EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC

FOKKER DR.I WEEKEND EDITION www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk SCALE 1:72 ITEM NO.7438 Eduard’s Fokker triplane in 1:72 is a little gem of a model, coming on just one sprue of the company’s familiar bluegrey polystyrene, plus a sheet of decals for two aircraft; 479/17, Lt August Raben, Jasta 18, Montingen (now MontoyFlanville), France, October 1918. This machine has red-painted upper wings and forward fuselage; the rear is painted white and the undersides in light blue as seen on the box art. The other markings option is 195/17, Lt Hermann Vallendor, Jasta 2, Halluin, France, April 1918. This aircraft is painted with dark olive green streaks, with the same white rear fuselage and light blue undersurfaces as the other option. Moulded detail is very fine on all parts, with a subtle stressed-fabric effect on the wings, cooling gills on the rotary engine’s cylinders and the twin machine guns. Only a little rigging is needed in the Dr.I so it would make a good subject for a first step into small-scale WW1 fighters. MN Beautifully moulded parts on this tiny model, with two eye-catching decal options too Tweezer-tipped fingers will be a big advantage here

SOVIET MT-LB www.pocketbond.co.uk SCALE; 1:35 MATERIALS; IM, PE, CW, WS ITEM NO.05578 Trumpeter issued this all-new kit of the Soviet Cold War-era MT-LB troop carrier in 2016 and we have finally got around to reviewing it. This kit depicts the ‘basic’ variant and can be seen towing an artillery piece on the box-top, although the gun is not included in the box. Trumpeter have used their familiar grey polystyrene here and the moulded detail is fantastic, from the raised fittings, bolt and rivet heads to the subtle welding seams on the hull’s nose. The kit comes with a well appointed interior that includes an engine, gearbox and final drive which will be largely visible on the finished model thanks to the extensive roof-hatches and lift-off engine access panel. The crew cabin is present too, with seating, fuel tanks and other structures provided. The tracks are individual-links, each with two separately moulded guide horns. Not really a problem, but Friulmodels will be more robust. MN

A very widely used Soviet AFV and a superb kit of it, with lots of modelling potential Tracks might be slightly delicate after colour washes have been applied; Friuls may be better

A lot of attention has been paid to the cockpit of this kit, with some very neat touches in evidence; the instrument panels are very finely moulded, the cockpit tub features excellent raised knobs and switches and the bulkheads carry some electrical cabling that will paint up nicely. As they come, the ejector seats are extremely well done, building up from two halves and top panel, a seat pad, ejector rail and pull handle; all that’s needed are harnesses, not provided with the kit. The undercarriage bay ‘liners’ are beautifully rendered and exhibit hydraulic lines and other elements, all of which will respond well to the paint/weathering process. Decals are provided for three Canadian, three Australian and one Spanish air force machines. RHEINTOCHTER GERMAN R-3P SURFACETO-AIR MISSILE ITEM NO; CB35075 www.hannants.co.uk We took a look at Bronco’s first 1:35 kit of the WW2 German ‘Rheintochter’ surface-to-air missile some issues back and now the second variant has arrived. It too uses the Flak 41 mount as a launch platform, with a new elevating beam from which the missile is fired. As before, the overwhelming number of kit parts will be found in the base; it’s a complex and highly detailed item that will reward the modeller with a superb replica if assembled with great care, using a minimum of liquid cement to avoid flooding the fine surface detail. The weapon itself is fascinating design which used a liquid-fuelled motor plus two solid rocketboosters. The kit depicts the missile well, with individuallymoulded nozzles on the ‘SRBs’ and nicely thin fins. A dolly is provided to support the missile, off the launcher, which is a nice touch. MN

STAR WARS ROGUE ONE REBEL U-WING FIGHTER www.revell.de/en SCALE; APROX 1:144 MATERIALS; IM KIT NUMBER; 06755 It seems that the U-Wing is the only major vehicle subject from Rogue One to make it to kit-form and Revell had done a very neat job of it. The model is a Level 1 ‘build and play’ kit and comes with a sound and light module that is incorporated within the model’s structure, forming the ‘belly’ of the ship. The upper and lower ‘fuselage’ plus the ‘wings’ are pre-coloured and under a coat of matt varnish plus some colour-washes and paint-chipping effects, they have the potential to look very good. One can, of course, opt for a full repaint if going the whole-hog. Two pilot figures come with the model (hence our estimation of the scale, above) and they are quite nicely detailed, as are the externally mounted engines; all will respond well to some creative weathering to create more of a lived-in look to the U-Wing. MN A cool-looking ship from the newest Star Wars film and significant superdetailing/weathering potential Snap-fit is fine but for additional detail work, this feature might be better removed to allow for test-fitting

MODEL T 1914 FIRETRUCK www.hannants.co.uk SCALE; 1:24 MATERIALS; IM, SVT KIT NUMBER; 24004 What a fantastic subject for a model kit! The Ford Model T took many forms over its lifespan but surely the 1914 firetruck must be one of the most attractive, with its pillarbox red paint and polished brass fittings. ICM have used parts from their superb Model T kit as the basis here, with extensive additional mouldings for the rear-mounted water cylinders, ladder, stowage basket and more. The detail is excellent throughout, with punchy raised ‘Ford’ logos on the radiator, running boards and footwell and realistically rendered seat padding. The model comes complete with a decent replica of the 2.9 litre, four-cylinder side-valve engine which comes with fanbelt and radiator plumbing; all the modeller needs to add are the ignition cables which loop back to contacts on the firewall. References for this can be found on the internet and the cables will add an appealing extra touch to the engine bay. SPACE: 1999,

A BLAST FROM THE PAST Being a big fan of the Eagle since seeing it appear in the UK TV series 'Space 1999' – and still having the Dinky Toys model – MPC's big twenty-two inch Eagle was a ‘must have’ model for Greg Phillips

oming in a stout box loaded with many separate plastic bags, the parts are moulded in white and grey plastic, the grey for the darker parts of the Eagle which could an option for individuals who may not wish to paint their model. The surfaces have nicely raised detail areas and you get a sudden realisation of how big this model will be when looking at the size of the command-module parts. One of the main features of the Eagle is its framework which comes in many sections in various bags. The tubular plastic framework has light seams with a fair few ejector-pin marks which will need to be filled. Quite a daunting task with the amount of framework on the model! One

note of interest when looking at the parts are the original kit parts that must have made up the original Eagle filming model, such as rear Panther tank vents and the Apollo Lunar Module. Two astronauts are supplied as well; these are the weakest point of the kit but will look convincing enough through the transparencies. You get four metal springs for the legs and two screws to secure the main reconnaissance pod. And a busy decal sheet, which is nicely printed with a high sheen over the markings. The instructions come as an A2 folded layout, with clear and easy to read stages. The colour painting guides are on the sides of the box and are very clear to follow.

The kit comes in a stout box, loaded with many separate plastic bags The ejector-pin marks were filled in. Luckily these are on the insides of the parts and only those that might show need to be filled

FOR LIFT OFF V READY Where to begin? The

instructions were ignored as far as the first sub-assemblies were concerned. I decided to start with the tedious areas first (the ones that will need a lot of cleaning up). Parts Q21 and Q22 are the only two main parts to this stage, but there will be a tedious and intricate seam to clean up along the length and there will be four of these components to complete. Next, the forward and aft compartments were made up. Four parts make up the bulk of these and, with care,

the top edges will only need a little cleaning up. Just a little filler was required for the flat sides to hide slight dips on the surface on each compartment. The framework for these was added around the compartments as per instructions in Stage 13. The angled framework sides for these two compartments are next, Stage 10. Part B63 was used as a guide to set the angles for parts K15A and K178. This goes for the other three framework sides as well. Here the fit wasn’t as good as was hoped and small

You get four metal springs for the legs and two screws to secure the main reconnaissance pod

gaps were found that needed filling. These angled join gaps were filled with thick enamel paint as the gaps were too thin for filler. Some areas needed a couple of coats and were sanded when dry. Stage 10: These assemblies, once made, were left off to make painting of the compartments easier; they would be added in the final assembly.

PAINTING THE FORTH ROAD BRIDGE

Next stage was the framework for the Eagles top superstructure consisting of twenty-six parts. The main effort will be parts

It was decided to start with the tedious areas first; there’s an intricate seam to clean up along each part’s length and there will be four of these components to complete

F42 and F43 with lots of seams to clean in intricate and noticeable areas. The cleaned-up seams were then treated to an application of Mr Cement to melt any small blemishes. The ejector-pin marks were filled in; luckily these were on the insides of the framework and only those that might show need to be filled. A dry run was made following Stages 6 through to 8. After all that tedious cleaning up, this process was fun. Once happy with the fit, each stage was fixed and left to dry. With care this went together beautifully, with no fuss.

Just a little filler was required for the flat undersides to hide a slight dip on the surface of each compartment

To hide the seams on parts D56 and D57, 0.5mm plastic card was cut to the parts' rectangular area

For whatever reason this seemed to take forever to sand square. So it was decided to use one as a master

54

Using a Lego brick wall, rubber silicon was poured over the master foot pad and from this resin duplicates were made

FAST FOOD CARTONS

Next were the four landing pods. Care needs to be taken here as the parts here are very similar and orientation is the key to the pods’ assembly. A mistake was made with one of the pods; one to spot in the pictures of the final build-up. With all the relevant parts cut and cleaned up, 'dry fit first' was once again the golden rule. With care, the pods require little or no filler.

A 3mm hole was drilled to take its replacement; a length of aluminium tubing. The last piece to add was a plastic tag at the bottom of the rod to locate into the foot pad

The final process used was 6B pencil lead dust; this was brushed over the parts. One thing to note is that when watching the series again, the legs look pale aluminium in colour but the choice is the modeller’s

This area was a joy to build up and looks nicely complicated

FOOT PADS

The four landing legs were next. There are ten parts to each leg assembly here, with a movable scissor link and a metal spring that will be hidden within the landing pods. Next, parts D56 and D57 were glued up and here a step was formed. Also, because of the moulding process there were four diagonal ridges to clean up. One method used to overcome all that cleaning up was to use 0.5mm plastic card, cut to the part's rectangular shape with the relevant holes drilled out. Once this was done, the rectangle was cut in half in order to fit within the four struts. The next parts to be put together were the foot pads, D61A and D61B. These parts weren’t a snug fit and I ended up with a trench line all around the underneath edge that needed filling. For some reason this took forever to sand square, so I decided to use one as a master to make three more from resin. The master pad was given a couple of coats of primer and using Lego bricks to make a wall, it was placed in the middle, upside down so any

The impressively large reconnaissance pod held no major issues

The command module will involve the most detailed painting and with the decals on, will look good through the small windows

With parts bought from Maplin a rudimentary circuit was made, adding some much needed light to what will be a dark area within the module

Mini Review... VALKERIE MINIATURES 1:35 BRITISH ARMY OF THE RHEIN TANK CREW IN GERMANY (BAOR) ITEM no.VM35014 www.valkerie.co.kr

This set contains one ‘head ‘n shoulders’ and two full figures, depicting a Cold War British tank crew. They would be suitable for Centurion and Chieftain tanks and maybe other armoured vehicles of this era. Each figure comes with a choice of two heads (with two different headphone designs) and the full-figures come with individually cast arms. The detail is very fine indeed and they are ideal for a Tamiya or Takom Chieftain.

Using the same paint colours but varying the method of pre-shading

V blemishes would be hidden

under the pad. Sylmasta 380 rubber and T26 catalyst was used, which is easy to mix and with care is usually bubble-free when set (tapping the side of the Lego wall and tapping under the Lego plate should do the trick of eliminating bubbles). Left for a couple of days, the master was pulled out and the mould given a light dusting of talcum powder in readiness for the resin (there's something therapeutic about casting). With the two-part resin poured, the rubber mould was tapped as above to eliminate bubbles, in the resin this time. Time is of the essence here as the resin will set in minutes. Once cured, you should have a blemish-free pad. Repeat twice. One more

56

modification was made to the legs in the form of the leg support part D60. To create a more convincing look, the lower part was cut at the top of the bottom flange. A three millimetre (diameter) hole was drilled to take its replacement, which was a length of three millimetre aluminium tubing, cut to length. The last piece to add was a plastic tag to the bottom of the rod to locate into the foot pad. All the legs and reconnaissance feet were painted in the same way using Vallejo Metal Color Pale Burnt Metal mixed with Flat Black. Once dried, the parts were given a dark oil paint colour-wash which was left for twenty minutes then lightly wiped off. The final process used was 6B pencil lead dust which was brushed over the parts.

One thing to note is that when watching the series again, the legs look pale aluminium in colour but the choice is yours.

BURNING DESIRE

The rear power unit is next; this complex sub-assembly has a lot of parts to it but once again, by following the instructions plus plenty of dry-runs, this area was a joy to build up. The final assembly looks nice and complicated. The four exhaust nozzles are moulded in grey and were primed in Tamiya XF-2 Flat White with a few extra light coats on the outside, ready for the chrome paint. First however, the inside of the exhaust was painted; first with Tamiya XF-2 Black with a hint of Tamiya XF-77 IJN Grey, but any grey will do. The inside edge was dusted

The anti-glare and heat protection areas on the model were masked off and painted, but fine decals are supplied for these areas if you wish

with Flat Black and XF-10 Brown just to give it that burnt look at the end. The exhausts were sealed with Tamiya Tape ready for the metallic effect on the outside. Vallejo Metal Color 'Chrome' was used

here, plus a light dusting of Vallejo Dark Aluminium. For water-based paints these acrylics are very good, even when applied by brush. All the Eagle’s exhaust parts, small and large, were dealt with using the same process.

MOBILE HOME

The reconnaissance pod is up next. The big and thickly moulded parts fitted together well once cleaned up, with just a few thin seams to fill. Parts D30 were left off as one would have

to add the windows before attaching them to the main assembly. By leaving these off, painting would be much easier. The four pod windows were painted from behind with Flat Black to which a fair amount of Tamiya Sea

V Blue XF-17 had been added. This would look good when viewed from above.

THE POINTY END

The last sub-assembly to be built was the command module. This is an impressive size and the two main parts fitted perfectly which was a blessing with those raised panels on the sides. The same was true with the rear bulkhead which also comes in two parts; these can just clip together if you wish. The astronauts are supported on two stalks which fit into their backs; these won’t be seen when the module is later assembled. These areas will involve the most painting. The internal front nose was painted flat black and I will tell you why in a moment. The rear is a mixture of 1970s seventies colours, created using Tamiya browns, yellows and white to match as well as possible the colour guide on the side of the box. The decals add more interest to the cockpit and the astronauts, but you can see very little though the small

windows; just enough to satisfy the eye. Which brings us to the reason why the internal module was painted black inside. I decided to light up the internal module, and after messing around with two AA battery holders and two small filament bulbs from the old Millennium Falcon kit, a rudimentary circuit was formed. An on/ off switch was considered but I decided against it. The two bulbs were replaced with modern white LEDs (all bought from my local Maplin store). The AA battery holders were fixed inside the module on either side. The LEDs were fixed with some tinfoil placed behind them to give some back-lighting above the astronauts’ heads. The black interior would stop any light leaks coming through to the outside of the module.

ANY COLOUR YOU WANT SO LONG AS IT’S WHITE

Luckily, a model this size is quite eye-catching in itself, but the paint job has to be believable as well. While you don’t want it looking like it’s been through a ‘war in the

stars’ you equally don’t want it to look brand new. Getting the balance right was a hard one to judge; clean, but with a bit of dirt was felt to be the order of the day. Various methods of pre-shading were tested. One method used for some assemblies was to paint in flat black and leave to dry for a couple of minutes then wipe off the excess with a wet cloth leaving a hard edge, and covering the area in the final colour. Another method used on some assemblies was to paint in full with Flat Black and control the amount of shading with the final colour. Additionally some assembles were given a dusting of Tamiya X-19 Smoke which was lightly sanded back here and there. The aim was to visually break up the sizeable model using different methods but the same colours. Only the viewer will know whether that concept has worked or not. Before final build up of all the assemblies, the decals were applied. The anti-glare decals for the Command Module and the black heat protectors on the

landing pods were not used, but masked and sprayed instead. The decals that were used went down beautifully with a bit of Micro Set solution. The only issue with the markings is that you are left with a sizeable quantity of small decals with no location to place them. These may be for earlier or later Eagles throughout the series. This model had no issues and most areas were a joy to build up in this size. We must thank MPC for giving us a fantastic kit of the subject in this scale. A very large Klingon Bird of Prey would make a good follow up! ●

STEVE ZALOGA, OSPREY NEW VANGUARD NO.245 Widely available from good book sellers www.ospreypublishing.com ISBN; 978-1-4728-1807-2 This new title from Steve Zaloga looks at the origins of American tanks on the battlefield, beginning with the wonderfully Jules Vernes-looking CLB 75 Tracklayer from 1918 and works through to the better known designs, including the Renault FT (M1917) and the Mk.VIII ‘Liberty’ tank which was seen emulated in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The Christie designs are, of course, covered in some depth and then onto the M2/M1A1 Combat Car which lead to the familiar M3 Stuart design. The book makes for a very interesting read; the photos are reproduced quite small, so it’s slightly limited as a direct modelling reference, although Felipe Rodríguez’s superb colour plates make this title worth adding to one’s collection. Within the hardcovers we have 110+ pages of excellent quality black and white photos showing the SU-76M (specifically the ‘M, not the ‘i, which was a completely different vehicle) at rest, being driven to action, in columns, being refuelled and rearmed in the snow, mud, fields and cities. They’re not just in plain dark green either; we witness splotchy, crew-applied whitewash camouflage patterns and tatty overall whitewashes, with plentiful markings refs too. wata are very well known for their airbrushes of course, but they also make compressors, from modest table-top units to full-blown professional machines that can power multiple airbrushes at a time. With the Smart Jet Pro reviewed here, we have a compressor that is highly portable thanks to its chunky carry-handle and compact too; all the workings are covered by a heavy gauge metal shroud that protects them and gives the unit a smart, professional appearance. It is an oil-less-piston design, featuring a reciprocating piston and valves with teflon gaskets. The lack of oil means that the air stream is kept clean and free from atomised lubricant. The pump is powered by an electric motor, which runs off mains electricity. No tank is supplied with this unit, the pumped air being fed directly to the outlet nozzle via moisture trap and pressure regulator, then onwards to the hose. The output pressure is displayed on an analogue dial that sits on the top of the casing and it can be dialled up to way higher than the average modeller will require. We connected up the hose, screwed on an airbrush and plugged the machine in. It ran remarkably quietly; the unit switches on and off during use (the 'Smart' part of its description) but thanks to the low noise, this wasn't really an annoyance. Remarkably, even though there's no air tank, we could detect no 'pulsing' of the air flow from the airbrush's nozzle, so smooth, continuous paint application should be straightforward to achieve. If you are looking for a very well made compressor that will last for years, with features that will help you improve the quality of your spraying (moisture trap, pressure control) the Iwata Smart Jet Pro is the ideal choice. At £309, it's not the cheapest unit out there, but as the phrase goes, “you get what you pay for” and in this case, it's a pretty good deal. ● AVAILABILITY; Iwata compressors, airbrushes and accessories are available from www.airbrushes.com

OF DISC-OVERY

Squadron launch their new product line with an unforgettable kit of the 'Haunebu II' flying saucer

A

s modellers, we know that there seems to be an enduring fascination with all things related to WW2 German military hardware and that extends to the fictional as well as the factual. There have been many rumours and hypotheses about a WW2 German ‘flying saucer’ over the years, one that used electro-magnetic energy to defeat gravity and propel the machine at staggering speeds. All speculation of course, but it makes for a good read. Now, Squadron Models (a new line from Squadron in the USA) have created a wonderfully sci-fi-looking 1:72 kit of the

‘Haunebu II’ in injection-moulding plastic. It’s a highly detailed model and will keep the builder occupied for many hours, the result being a unique replica of the mythical ‘H-Gerät’ and something very different for the display cabinet. A more detailed kit preview and full-build coming to TMMI soon. ● 1:72 Haunebu II is available now from; www.squadronmodels.com See you again next time editor@tamiyamodelmagazine.com

ZERO PAINTS GLOSS BLACK (ZP-3004) Gloss black paint might seem a slightly prosaic material to talk about here, but for car and bike modellers, finding a tough, deeply glossy black that can be handled reasonably soon after spraying can be a challenge. Tamiya’s X1 is excellent of course, but many modellers prefer to spray a cellulose finish for ultimate hardness and this is where Zero Paints’ Gloss Black steps in. This material must be airbrushed over a primer and it needs to be applied ‘wet’ to create a gloss finish; once dry, it keeps its glossiness and is impressively tough. Highly recommended! www.hiroboy.com
